Abstract

In the PANDA experiment of the FAIR project, it is proposed to use internal targets based on the hydrogen isotopes that provide a monodisperse regime of flow generation of solid spherical pellets with the diameter from 15–40 µm with the frequency from several tens of to several hundred kilohertz. The process for generating the pellets in such facilities includes the cooling, liquefying, and disintegration into drops of the liquid hydrogen jet directed vertically downwards; freezing of the jet when expiring with acceleration into vacuum; and its transport through the vacuum path into the region of interaction with the antiproton beam. For the effective control of the systems of the setup and for the adjustment of generation of pellets, an automatization and control system is developed combining the devices for measurement and control of pellet parameters (temperature, pressure, hydrogen flow, and piezoelectric generator frequency) and the optical diagnostics in a unified computational network. For data exchange between the devices, the TCP/IP Sockets and Modbus TCP protocols are used.

Abstract

A procedure for spark-discharge purification of a liquid xenon sample with a mass of 55 kg is described. The average lifetime of ionization electrons before capture by electronegative impurities in liquid xenon increased from ≤ 0.1 μs to ≥ 50 μs for an electric field of 50–500 V/cm as a result of the procedure. The xenon purified with this method is intended for use in the RED-100 detector for observation of the process of coherent elastic neutrino scattering off xenon nuclei.

Abstract

The RED-100 experimental setup, which is designed to detect elastic coherent neutrino scattering off xenon nuclei, is described. One specific feature of this setup is the possibility of using it in above ground experiments. The setup is based on the RED-100 two-phase emission detector in which liquid xenon is used as a working medium for detection of rare events. The results of the technical run with the setup are presented. These are the evidence of the normal operation of all systems and the readiness of the setup for carrying out an experiment.

Abstract

RED-100 is a two-phase detector for study of coherent elastic scattering of reactor electron antineutrinos off xenon atomic nuclei. The detector contains a total of 200 kg of liquid xenon in a titanium cryostat with 160 kg of xenon in active volume inside a Teflon-made light collection cage associated with electrode system. The active volume is viewed by two arrays of nineteen 3"-diameter Hamamatsu R11410-20 PMTs assembled in two planes on top and bottom. The electrode system is equipped with an electron shutter (a patented device) to reduce a "spontaneous" single-electron noise. The detector was tested in a ground-level laboratory. The obtained results demonstrate that detection of coherent elastic scattering of reactor antineutrinos off xenon nuclei at Kalinin nuclear power plant with the RED-100 detector is feasible with a threshold of 4 ionization electrons., 23 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The spectra of photons produced in the interaction between carbon ions of kinetic energy 2.0 and 3.2 GeV per nucleon and beryllium nuclei were measured at the FLINT facility by means of electromagnetic calorimeters that is deployed at the accelerator of the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP, Moscow). The spectra in question were measured in the central rapidity region (at angles between 35° and 73° in the laboratory frame) at photon energies of 1 to 3 GeV by using a cumulative-photon trigger. An analysis of the data obtained in this way reveals that the interaction of multinucleon fluctuation in the projectile nucleus with a multinucleon fluctuation in the target nucleus is a dominant process that leads to photon production in the measured region of angles and momenta. As a development of the generally accepted terminology, an interaction of this type may be called a double cumulative interaction.

Abstract

For 12C9Be interactions at a kinetic beam energy of 3.2 GeV per nucleon, the spectra of photons at laboratory angles in the range 55°–73° were measured off the kinematical region available to the interaction of single nucleons within colliding nuclei. The use of a fast trigger for selecting events involving the production of high-transverse-momentum photons made it possible to measure spectra off the kinematical boundary of four-nucleon interaction. It is shown that the proposed procedure is adequate to the problem of searches for and investigation of flucton-flucton interaction. In the kinematical region where flucton-flucton interaction can manifest itself, the cross sections in question are on the same order of magnitude as respective model predictions. In order to draw definitive conclusions on the role of flucton-flucton interaction, it is highly desirable to extend the angular range of the measurements toward smaller angles.

Abstract

A setup is developed at the Institute for Theoretical and Experimental Physics for studying cumulative processes in hA and AA interactions with photon and π0-meson production in the central region of rapidities at high transverse momenta. Lead glass calorimeters and a charged particle rejection system are the main components of the setup. A fast trigger for a high-energy cumulative particle, based on detection of Cherenkov radiation in the lead glasses, is realized in the setup.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed charm baryon decay Xi(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+). We observe 150+/-22+/-5 events for the signal. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 GeV/c Sigma(-) beam. The branching fractions of the decay relative to the Cabibbo-favored Xi(+)(c)-->Sigma+K-pi(+) and Xi(+)(c)-->Xi(-)pi(+)pi(+) are measured to be B(Xi(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(+)(c)-->Sigma+K-pi(+)) = 0.22+/-0. 06+/-0.03 and B(Xi(+)(c)-->pK(-)pi(+))/B(Xi(+)(c)-->Xi(-)pi(+)pi(+)) = 0.20+/-0.04+/-0.02, respectively.

Abstract

A half-liter two-phase xenon chamber was built and primary and secondary (proportional) scintillation signals were investigated by using α particles. The energy threshold in the chamber was less than 50 keV of electron equivalent and energy resolution was 18%. The value of the spatial (Z-coordinate) resolution achieved in the time projection chamber was about 0.4 mm.

Abstract

We report the observation of two-neutrino double-beta decay in (136)Xe with T(1/2) = 2.11 ± 0.04(stat) ± 0.21(syst) × 10(21) yr. This second-order process, predicted by the standard model, has been observed for several nuclei but not for (136)Xe. The observed decay rate provides new input to matrix element calculations and to the search for the more interesting neutrinoless double-beta decay, the most sensitive probe for the existence of Majorana particles and the measurement of the neutrino mass scale.

Abstract

We report the first observation of a charm-strange meson D(+)(sJ)(2632) at a mass of 2632.5+/-1.7 MeV/c(2) in data from SELEX, the charm hadro-production experiment E781 at Fermilab. This state is seen in two decay modes, D(+)(s)eta and D0K+. In the D(+)(s)eta decay mode we observe a peak with 101 events over a combinatoric background of 54.9 events at a mass of 2635.4+/-3.3 MeV/c(2). There is a corresponding peak of 21 events over a background of 6.9 at 2631.5+/-2.0 MeV/c(2) in the decay mode D0K+. The decay width of this state is17 MeV/c(2) at 90% confidence level. The relative branching ratio Gamma(D0K+)/Gamma(D(+)(s)eta) is 0.14+/-0.06. The mechanism that keeps this state narrow is unclear. Its decay pattern is also unusual, being dominated by the D(+)(s)eta decay mode.

Abstract

Pion virtual compton scattering (VCS) via the reaction pi(-)e-->pi(-)egamma was observed in the Fermilab E781 SELEX experiment. SELEX used a 600 GeV/c pi(-) beam incident on target atomic electrons, detecting the incident pi(-) and the final state pi(-), electron and gamma. Theoretical predictions based on chiral perturbation theory are incorporated into a Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment and are compared to the data. The number of reconstructed events (=9) and their distribution with respect to the kinematic variables (for the kinematic region studied) are in reasonable accord with the predictions. The corresponding pi(-) VCS experimental cross section is sigma=38.8+/-13 nb, in agreement with the theoretical expectation of sigma=34.7 nb.

Abstract

We observe a signal for the doubly charmed baryon Xi(+)(cc) in the charged decay mode Xi(+)(cc)--Lambda(+)(c)K-pi(+) in data from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. We observe an excess of 15.9 events over an expected background of 6.1+/-0.5 events, a statistical significance of 6.3sigma. The observed mass of this state is 3519+/-1 MeV/c(2). The Gaussian mass width of this state is 3 MeV/c(2), consistent with resolution; its lifetime is less than 33 fs at 90% confidence.

Abstract

We report new precision measurements of the lifetimes of the Lambda(+)(c) and D0 from SELEX, the charm hadroproduction experiment at Fermilab. Based upon 1630 Lambda(+)(c) and 10 210 D0 decays we observe lifetimes of tau[Lambda(+)(c)] = 198.1+/-7.0+/-5.6 fs and tau[D0] = 407.9+/-6.0+/-4.3 fs.

Abstract

We report the first observation of the Cabibbo-suppressed charm baryon decay Ξ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+}. We observe 150±22±5 events for the signal. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996-1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 GeV/c Σ^{-} beam. The branching fractions of the decay relative to the Cabibbo-favored Ξ_{c}^{+}→Σ^{+}K^{-}π^{+} and Ξ_{c}^{+}→Ξ^{-}π^{+}π^{+} are measured to be B(Ξ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+})/B(Ξ_{c}^{+}→Σ^{+}K^{-}π^{+})=0.22±0.06±0.03 and B(Ξ_{c}^{+}→pK^{-}π^{+})/B(Ξ_{c}^{+}→Ξ^{-}π^{+}π^{+})=0.20±0.04±0.02, respectively.

Abstract

Novel detector schemes are proposed for the short-baseline neutrino experiments of next generation, aimed at exploring the large-Delta m(2) domain of nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillations in the appearance mode. These schemes emphasize good spectrometry for charged particles and for electromagnetic showers and efficient reconstruction of pi(0) –> gamma gamma decays. The basic elements are a sequence of relatively thin emulsion targets, immersed in magnetic field and interspersed with electronic trackers, and a fine-grained electromagnetic calorimeter built of lead glass. These elements act as an integral whole in reconstructing the electromagnetic showers. This conceptual scheme shows good performance in identifying the tau (quasi-) two-body decays by their characteristic kinematics and in selecting the electronic decays of the tau.
