1. How Students Taking Introductory Biology Experience the Chemistry Content

Abstract: Student experiences learning chemistry have been well studied in chemistry courses but less so in biology courses. Chemistry concepts are foundational to introductory biology courses, and student experiences learning chemistry concepts may impact their overall course experiences and subsequent student outcomes. In this study, we asked undergraduate students enrolled in introductory biology courses at a public R1 institution an open-response question asking how their experiences learning chemistry topics affected their identities as biologists. We used thematic analysis to identify common ideas in their responses. We found that while almost half of student respondents cited learning chemistry as having positive impacts on their experiences learning biology, students who struggled with chemistry topics were significantly more likely to have negative experiences learning biology. We also found significant relationships between prior chemistry preparation, student background, and the likelihood of students struggling with chemistry and negative experiences learning biology. These findings emphasize the impact of learning specific content on student psychosocial metrics and suggest areas for biology educators to focus on to support learning and alleviate student stress in introductory biology.

Abstract: The Pandora Software Development Kit and algorithm libraries perform reconstruction of neutrino interactions in liquid argon time projection chamber detectors. Pandora is the primary event reconstruction software used at the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment, which will operate four large-scale liquid argon time projection chambers at the far detector site in South Dakota, producing high-resolution images of charged particles emerging from neutrino interactions. While these high-resolution images provide excellent opportunities for physics, the complex topologies require sophisticated pattern recognition capabilities to interpret signals from the detectors as physically meaningful objects that form the inputs to physics analyses. A critical component is the identification of the neutrino interaction vertex. Subsequent reconstruction algorithms use this location to identify the individual primary particles and ensure they each result in a separate reconstructed particle. A new vertex-finding procedure described in this article integrates a U-ResNet neural network performing hit-level classification into the multi-algorithm approach used by Pandora to identify the neutrino interaction vertex. The machine learning solution is seamlessly integrated into a chain of pattern-recognition algorithms. 3. Community-acquired bacteraemia by Klebsiella pneumoniae producing KPC-3 and resistant to ceftazidime/avibactam

Abstract: ABSTRACT: Objectives: To describe the clinical and microbiological features of a case of community-acquired infection by KPC-producing K. pneumoniae (KPCKP) resistant to ceftazidime/avibactam (CAZ-AVI). Methods: Identification of microorganisms was performed with MALDI Biotyper CA System (BrukerDaltonics, Madrid, Spain). Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed using Sensitre EURGNCOL panels (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Madrid, Spain) and gradient strips (Etest, bioMérieux, Madrid, Spain) in the case of CAZ-AVI, using EUCAST breakpoints for interpretation. Whole genome sequencing of blood culture and rectal swab isolates was performed using the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 sequencing system, with 2 × 150-bp paired-end reads (Illumina, Inc.). Results: Blood culture and rectal swab KPCKP isolates were resistant to carbapenems and to CAZ-AVI. The blood culture isolate showed susceptibility to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), but the rectal swab culture isolate was resistant to this antibiotic. Both isolates belonged to clonal lineage ST512, harboured a single copy of blaKPC-3 gene, and showed 16 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) between them and 38 SNPs with regard to the first KPC-3 producing K. pneumoniae isolated in our hospital in an initial outbreak in 2012. Genome-wide resistome analysis revealed the presence of a IncFIB(K) plasmid harbouring sul1 and dfrA12 genes only in the rectal swab culture isolate, which may explain its resistance to TMP-SMX. Conclusions: Resistance to ceftazidime-avibactam is an emerging nosocomial problem. This case shows that CAZ-AVI-resistant KPCKP strains may disseminate into the community and cause serious infections.

Abstract: Statistics and Optimization are foundational to modern Machine Learning. Here, we propose an alternative foundation based on Abstract Algebra, with mathematics that facilitates the analysis of learning. In this approach, the goal of the task and the data are encoded as axioms of an algebra, and a model is obtained where only these axioms and their logical consequences hold. Although this is not a generalizing model, we show that selecting specific subsets of its breakdown into algebraic atoms obtained via subdirect decomposition gives a model that generalizes. We validate this new learning principle on standard datasets such as MNIST, FashionMNIST, CIFAR-10, and medical images, achieving performance comparable to optimized multilayer perceptrons. Beyond data-driven tasks, the new learning principle extends to formal problems, such as finding Hamiltonian cycles from their specifications and without relying on search. This algebraic foundation offers a fresh perspective on machine intelligence, featuring direct learning from training data without the need for validation dataset, scaling through model additivity, and asymptotic convergence to the underlying rule in the data.

5. Quantum-Safe integration of TLS in SDN networks

Abstract: Shor's algorithm efficiently solves factoring and discrete logarithm problems using quantum computers, compromising all public key schemes used today. These schemes rely on assumptions on their computational complexity, which quantum computers can easily bypass. The solutions have to come from new algorithms - called Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) - or from new methods, such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). The former replicate the computational security ideas of classical public key algorithms, while the latter recurs to use the quantum properties of nature, which also brings a mathematical security proof, potentially offering Information-Theoretic Security. To secure data in the future, we must adopt these paradigms. With the speed of quantum computing advancements, the transition to quantum-safe cryptography within the next decade is critical. Delays could expose long-lived confidential data, as current encryption may be broken before its value expires. However, the shift must balance the adoption of new technologies with maintaining proven systems to protect against present and future threats. In this work, we have selected Transport Layer Security, one of the most widely used protocols, as the foundation to hybridize classical, quantum, and post-quantum cryptography in a way suitable for broad adoption in Software-Defined Networking, the most flexible networking paradigm that has been used to deploy integrated quantum-classical networks. To this end, we use standards for QKD key extraction and SDN integration. The purposed implementation is based on the latest version of TLS and demonstrates advanced capabilities such as rekeying and key transport across a large QKD network, while supporting crypto-agility and maintaining backward compatibility through the use of ciphersuites. The performance of this approach has been demonstrated using a deployed production infrastructure.

6. Improving Monocular Visual-Inertial Initialization with Structureless Visual-Inertial Bundle Adjustment

Abstract: Monocular visual inertial odometry (VIO) has facilitated a wide range of real-time motion tracking applications, thanks to the small size of the sensor suite and low power consumption. To successfully bootstrap VIO algorithms, the initialization module is extremely important. Most initialization methods rely on the reconstruction of 3D visual point clouds. These methods suffer from high computational cost as state vector contains both motion states and 3D feature points. To address this issue, some researchers recently proposed a structureless initialization method, which can solve the initial state without recovering 3D structure. However, this method potentially compromises performance due to the decoupled estimation of rotation and translation, as well as linear constraints. To improve its accuracy, we propose novel structureless visual-inertial bundle adjustment to further refine previous structureless solution. 7. A multi-model study of the air pollution related to traffic flow in a two-dimensional porous metropolitan area

Abstract: In this paper, a useful reinterpretation of the city as a porous medium justifies the application of well-known models on fluid dynamics to develop a multi-model study of urban air pollution due to traffic flow in a large city. Thus, to simulate the traffic flow through the city we use a nonconservative macroscopic traffic model combining the continuity equation with the Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer equations. For the air flow, regarding the emission rate of CO$_2$ and its dispersion in the atmosphere, we combine a microscopic model -- based on regression techniques but depending on vehicles' velocity and acceleration -- with a classical convection-diffusion-reaction transport model. To solve numerically above PDEs models, the finite element method of Lagrange $\rm{P_1}$ type along with suitable time marching schemes (like the strong stability preserving scheme) were sufficient to obtain stable numerical solutions. Several computational tests were run on a realistic scenario inspired by the Metropolitan Area of Guadalajara (Mexico), showing not only the influence of the urban landscape (that is, the porosity) on traffic flow, air flow, and pollution transport, but also other interesting phenomena such as rarefaction traffic waves.

8. Optimal word order for non-causal text generation with Large Language Models: the Spanish case

Abstract: Natural Language Generation (NLG) popularity has increased owing to the progress in Large Language Models (LLMs), with zero-shot inference capabilities. However, most neural systems utilize decoder-only causal (unidirectional) transformer models, which are effective for English but may reduce the richness of languages with less strict word order, subject omission, or different relative clause attachment preferences. This is the first work that analytically addresses optimal text generation order for non-causal language models. We present a novel Viterbi algorithm-based methodology for maximum likelihood word order estimation. We analyze the non-causal most-likelihood order probability for NLG in Spanish and, then, the probability of generating the same phrases with Spanish causal NLG. This comparative analysis reveals that causal NLG prefers English-like SVO structures. We also analyze the relationship between optimal generation order and causal left-to-right generation order using Spearman's rank correlation. Our results demonstrate that the ideal order predicted by the maximum likelihood estimator is not closely related to the causal order and may be influenced by the syntactic structure of the target sentence.

9. The nature of an imaginary quasi-periodic oscillation in the soft-to-hard transition of MAXI J1820+070

Abstract: A recent study shows that if the power spectra (PS) of accreting compact objects consist of a combination of Lorentzian functions that are coherent in different energy bands but incoherent with each other, the same is true for the Real and Imaginary parts of the cross spectrum (CS). Using this idea, we discovered imaginary quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in NICER observations of the black hole candidate MAXI J1820+070. The imaginary QPOs appear as narrow features with a small Real and large Imaginary part in the CS but are not significantly detected in the PS when they overlap in frequency with other variability components. The coherence function drops and the phase lags increase abruptly at the frequency of the imaginary QPO. We show that the multi-Lorentzian model that fits the PS and CS of the source in two energy bands correctly reproduces the lags and the coherence, and that the narrow drop of the coherence is caused by the interaction of the imaginary QPO with other variability components. The imaginary QPO appears only in the decay of the outburst, during the transition from the high-soft to the low-hard state of MAXI J1820+070, and its frequency decreases from approximately 5 Hz to around 1 Hz as the source spectrum hardens. We also analysed the earlier observations of the transition, where no narrow features were seen, and we identified a QPO in the PS that appears to evolve into the imaginary QPO as the source hardens. As for the type-B and C QPOs in this source, the rms spectrum of the imaginary QPO increases with energy. The lags of the imaginary QPO are similar to those of the type-B and C QPOs above 2 keV but differ from the lags of those other QPOs below that energy. Abstract: Lorentz invariance is a fundamental symmetry of spacetime and foundational to modern physics. One of its most important consequences is the constancy of the speed of light. This invariance, together with the geometry of spacetime, implies that no particle can move faster than the speed of light. In this article, we present the most stringent neutrino-based test of this prediction, using the highest energy neutrino ever detected to date, KM3-230213A. The arrival of this event, with an energy of $220^{+570}_{-110}\,\text{PeV}$, sets a constraint on $\delta \equiv c_\nu^2-1 < 4\times10^{-22}$.

Abstract: We present MicroBooNE's first search for dark sector $e^+e^-$ explanations of the long-standing MiniBooNE anomaly. The MiniBooNE anomaly has garnered significant attention over the past 20 years including previous MicroBooNE investigations into both anomalous electron and photon excesses, but its origin still remains unclear. In this letter, we provide the first direct test of dark sector models in which dark neutrinos, produced through neutrino-induced scattering, decay into missing energy and visible $e^+e^-$ pairs comprising the MiniBooNE anomaly. Many such models have recently gained traction as a viable solution to the anomaly while evading past bounds. Using an exposure of $6.87 \times 10^{20}$ protons-on-target in the Booster Neutrino Beam, we implement a selection targeting forward-going, coherently produced $e^+e^-$ events. After unblinding, we observe 95 events, which we compare with the constrained background-only prediction of $69.7 \pm 17.3$. This analysis sets the world's first direct limits on these dark sector models and, at the 95\% confidence level, excludes the majority of the parameter space viable as a solution to the MiniBooNE anomaly., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Supplemental Materials included in Ancillary files

Abstract: The Athena mission entered a redefinition phase in July 2022, driven by the imperative to reduce the mission cost at completion for the European Space Agency below an acceptable target, while maintaining the flagship nature of its science return. This notably called for a complete redesign of the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) cryogenic architecture towards a simpler active cooling chain. Passive cooling via successive radiative panels at spacecraft level is now used to provide a 50 K thermal environment to an X-IFU owned cryostat. 4.5 K cooling is achieved via a single remote active cryocooler unit, while a multi-stage Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator ensures heat lift down to the 50 mK required by the detectors. Amidst these changes, the core concept of the readout chain remains robust, employing Transition Edge Sensor microcalorimeters and a SQUID-based Time-Division Multiplexing scheme. Noteworthy is the introduction of a slower pixel. This enables an increase in the multiplexing factor (from 34 to 48) without compromising the instrument energy resolution, hence keeping significant system margins to the new 4 eV resolution requirement. This allows reducing the number of channels by more than a factor two, and thus the resource demands on the system, while keeping a 4' field of view (compared to 5' before). In this article, we will give an overview of this new architecture, before detailing its anticipated performances. Abstract: On February 13th, 2023, the KM3NeT/ARCA telescope detected a neutrino candidate with an estimated energy in the hundreds of PeVs. In this article, the observation of this ultra-high-energy neutrino is discussed in light of null observations above tens of PeV from the IceCube and Pierre Auger observatories. Performing a joint fit of all experiments under the assumption of an isotropic $E^{-2}$ flux, the best-fit single-flavour flux normalisation is $E^2 \Phi^{\rm 1f}_{\nu + \bar \nu} = 7.5 \times 10^{-10}~{\rm GeV cm^{-2} s^{-1} sr^{-1}}$ in the 90% energy range of the KM3NeT event. Furthermore, the ultra-high-energy data are then fit together with the IceCube measurements at lower energies, either with a single power law or with a broken power law, allowing for the presence of a new component in the spectrum. The joint fit including non-observations by other experiments in the ultra-high-energy region shows a slight preference for a break in the PeV regime if the ``High-Energy Starting Events'' sample is included, and no such preference for the other two IceCube samples investigated. A stronger preference for a break appears if only the KM3NeT data is considered in the ultra-high-energy region, though the flux resulting from such a fit would be inconsistent with null observations from IceCube and Pierre Auger. In all cases, the observed tension between KM3NeT and other datasets is of the order of $2.5\sigma-3\sigma$, and increased statistics are required to resolve this apparent tension and better characterise the neutrino landscape at ultra-high energies., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The KM3NeT observatory detected the most energetic neutrino candidate ever observed, with an energy between 72 PeV and 2.6 EeV at the 90% confidence level. The observed neutrino is likely of cosmic origin. In this article, it is investigated if the neutrino could have been produced within the Milky Way. Considering the low fluxes of the Galactic diffuse emission at these energies, the lack of a nearby potential Galactic particle accelerator in the direction of the event and the difficulty to accelerate particles to such high energies in Galactic systems, we conclude that if the event is indeed cosmic, it is most likely of extragalactic origin.

Abstract: This article presents the first search for neutrino-induced neutral current coherent single-photon production (NC coherent 1$\gamma$). The search makes use of data from the MicroBooNE 85-tonne active volume liquid argon time projection chamber detector, situated in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB), with an average neutrino energy of $\langle E_{\nu}\rangle \sim 0.8$ GeV. A targeted selection of candidate neutrino interactions with a single photon-like electromagnetic shower in the final state and no visible vertex activity was developed to search for the NC coherent 1$\gamma$ process, along with two auxiliary selections used to constrain the dominant background from NC$\pi^0$ production. With an integrated exposure of $6.87 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target delivered by the BNB, we set the world's first limit for this rare process, corresponding to an upper limit on the flux-averaged cross section of $\sigma<1.49 \times 10^{-41}\text{cm}^2$ at 90\% C.L., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures

Abstract: We present an inclusive search for anomalous production of single-photon events from neutrino interactions in the MicroBooNE experiment. The search and its signal definition are motivated by the previous observation of a low-energy excess of electromagnetic shower events from the MiniBooNE experiment. We use the Wire-Cell reconstruction framework to select a sample of inclusive single-photon final-state interactions with a final efficiency and purity of 7.0% and 40.2%, respectively. We leverage simultaneous measurements of sidebands of charged current $\nu_{\mu}$ interactions and neutral current interactions producing $\pi^{0}$ mesons to constrain signal and background predictions and reduce uncertainties. We perform a blind analysis using a dataset collected from February 2016 to July 2018, corresponding to an exposure of $6.34\times10^{20}$ protons on target from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) at Fermilab. In the full signal region, we observe agreement between the data and the prediction, with a goodness-of-fit $p$-value of 0.11. We then isolate a sub-sample of these events containing no visible protons, and observe $93\pm22\text{(stat.)}\pm35\text{(syst.)}$ data events above prediction, corresponding to just above $2\sigma$ local significance, concentrated at shower energies below 600 MeV., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: We report results from an updated search for neutral current (NC) resonant $\Delta$(1232) baryon production and subsequent $\Delta$ radiative decay (NC $\Delta\rightarrow N \gamma$). We consider events with and without final state protons; events with a proton can be compared with the kinematics of a $\Delta(1232)$ baryon decay, while events without a visible proton represent a more generic phase space. In order to maximize sensitivity to each topology, we simultaneously make use of two different reconstruction paradigms, Pandora and Wire-Cell, which have complementary strengths, and select mostly orthogonal sets of events. Considering an overall scaling of the NC $\Delta\rightarrow N \gamma$ rate as an explanation of the MiniBooNE anomaly, our data exclude this hypothesis at 94.4% CL. When we decouple the expected correlations between NC $\Delta\rightarrow N \gamma$ events with and without final state protons, and allow independent scaling of both types of events, our data exclude explanations in which excess events have associated protons, and do not exclude explanations in which excess events have no associated protons.

18. Statistical Methods and Modal Decompositions for Gridded and Scattered Data: Meshless Statistics and Meshless Data Driven Modal Analysis

Abstract: Statistical tools are crucial for studying and modeling turbulent flows, where chaotic velocity fluctuations span a wide range of spatial and temporal scales. Advances in image velocimetry, especially in tracking-based methods, now allow for high-speed, high-density particle image processing, enabling the collection of detailed 3D flow fields. This lecture provides a set of tutorials on processing such datasets to extract essential quantities like averages, second-order moments (turbulent stresses) and coherent patterns using modal decompositions such as the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). After a brief review of the fundamentals of statistical and modal analysis, the lecture delves into the challenges of processing scattered data from tracking velocimetry, comparing it to traditional gridded-data approaches. It also covers research topics, including physics-based Radial Basis Function (RBF) regression for meshless computation of turbulent statistics and the definition of an RBF inner product, which enables meshless computation of data-driven decompositions. These include traditional methods like Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD), as well as advanced variants such as Spectral POD (SPOD) and Multiscale POD (mPOD). 19. Three-dimensional simulations of accretion disks in pre-CE systems

Abstract: Before a binary system enters into a common envelope (CE) phase, accretion from the primary star onto the companion star through Roche Lobe overflow (RLOF) will lead to the formation of an accretion disk, which may generate jets. Accretion before and during the CE may alter the outcome of the interaction. Previous studies have considered different aspects of this physical mechanism. Here we study the properties of an accretion disk formed via 3D hydrodynamic simulations of the RLOF mass transfer between a 7 M$_\odot$, red supergiant star and a 1.4 M$_\odot$, neutron star companion. We simulate only the volume around the companion for improved resolution. We use a 1D implicit MESA simulation of the evolution of the system during 30,000 years between the on-set of the RLOF and the CE to guide the binary parameters and the mass-transfer rate, while we simulate only 21 years of the last part of the RLOF in 3D using an ideal gas isothermal equation of state. We expect that a pre-CE disk under these parameters will have a mass of $\sim 5\times 10^{-3}$ M$_\odot$ and a radius of $\sim$40 R$_\odot$ with a scale height of $\sim$5 R$_\odot$. The temperature profile of the disk is shallower than that predicted by the formalism of Shakura and Sunyaev, but more reasonable cooling physics would need to be included. We stress test these results with respect to a number of physical and numerical parameters, as well as simulation choices, and we expect them to be reasonable within a factor of a few for the mass and 15% for the radius. We also contextualize our results within those presented in the literature, in particular with respect to the dimensionality of simulations and the adiabatic index. Abstract: Let $X$ be a compact metric space. By $2^X$ we denote the hyperspace of all closed and non-empty subsets of $X$ endowed with the Hausdorff metric. Let $f:X\to X$ be a continuous function. In this paper we study some topological properties of the hyperspace $\omega(f)$, the collection of all omega limits sets $\omega(x,f)$ with $x\in X$. We prove the following: $i)$ If $X$ has no isolated points, then, for every continuous function $f:X\to X$, $int_{2^X}(\omega(f))=\emptyset$. $ii)$ If $X$ is a dendrite for which every arc contains a free arc and $f:X\to X$ is transitive, then the hyperspace $\omega(f)$ is totally disconnected. $iii)$ Let $D_\infty$ be the Wazewski's universal dendrite. Then there exists a transitive continuous function $f:D_\infty\to D_\infty$ for which the hyperspace $\omega(f)$ contains an arc; hence, $\omega(f)$ is not totally disconnected.

21. Exploring the capability of the HH 80-81 protostellar jet to accelerate relativistic particles

Abstract: Context. Protostellar jets driven by massive protostars are collimated outflows producing high-speed shocks through dense interstellar medium. Fast shocks can accelerate particles up to relativistic energies via diffusive shock acceleration, producing non-thermal emission that can originate ${\gamma}$-ray photons. HH 80-81 is one of the most powerful collimated protostellar jets in our galaxy, with non-thermal emission detected in radio, X-ray, and ${\gamma}$-ray bands. Characterize the ${\gamma}$-ray emission originated by the accelerated particles of the region is crucial for demonstrating the capability of protostars to accelerate cosmic rays. Aims. Our goal is to determine the particle distribution that is producing the ${\gamma}$-ray spectrum of HH 80-81 in order to ascertain the leptonic/hadronic origin of the ${\gamma}$-ray emission. We aim at associating the high-energy emission in the region with the HH 80-81 system, characterize its spectrum, and elaborate emission models based on what we expect from the diffusive shock acceleration. Methods. We use the 15 yr database provided by the Fermi-LAT satellite to study the high-energy emission of the jet, spanning from 300 MeV to 100 GeV. In addition, we perform a source association based on positional arguments. Then, we employ the naima and Gamera softwares to analyze the possible mechanisms that are producing ${\gamma}$-rays considering the ambient conditions. We perform a radiative fitting and study the nature of the particles behind the ${\gamma}$-ray emission. Results. By analyzing all the candidates to produce the ${\gamma}$-ray emission that we detect, we conclude that HH 80-81 is the most probable candidate to explain the ${\gamma}$-ray emission in the region. 22. Human fields and their impact on brain waves A pilot study

Abstract: During brain function, groups of neurons fire synchronously. When these groups are large enough, the resulting electrical signals can be measured on the scalp using Electroencephalography (EEG). The amplitude of these signals can be significant depending on the size and synchronization of the neural activity. EEG waves exhibit distinct patterns based on the brain's state, such as whether it is asleep, awake, engaged in mental calculations, or performing other cognitive functions. Additionally, these patterns can be modified by external factors, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). TMS involves bringing an antenna that generates variable electromagnetic fields close to specific areas of the skull to treat certain pathologies. Given that the human body naturally generates magnetic fields, a question arises: Can these fields influence the EEG by modulating neuronal function, causing a resonance effect, or through some unknown interaction? This study investigated whether approaching the palm of the hand to the top of the head (Intervention) could induce effects in the EEG. Power Spectral Density (PSD) was obtained for the 30 seconds preceding the intervention (PSD_pre) and the final 30 seconds of the intervention (PSD_last). The exact Wilcoxon signed-rank test suggests that the median of PSD_pre is greater than the median of PSD_last at the 95% confidence level (p-value = 0.004353). In contrast, in the control group, the test indicates that at the 95% confidence level (p-value = 0.7667), the median of PSD_pre is not greater than the median of PSD_last., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: Oscillations of atmospheric muon and electron neutrinos produce tau neutrinos with energies in the GeV range, which can be observed by the ORCA detector of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. First measurements with ORCA6, an early subarray corresponding to about 5$\%$ of the final detector, are presented. A sample of 5828 neutrino candidates has been selected from the analysed exposure of 433 kton-years. The $\nu_\tau$ normalisation, defined as the ratio between the number of observed and expected tau neutrino events, is measured to be $S_\tau = 0.48^{+0.5}_{-0.33}$. This translates into a $\nu_\tau$ charged-current cross section measurement of $\sigma_{\tau}^{\text{meas}} = (2.5 ^{+2.6}_{-1.8}) \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^{2}$ nucleon$^{-1}$ at the median $\nu_\tau$ energy of 20.3 GeV. The result is consistent with the measurements of other experiments. In addition, the current limit on the non-unitarity parameter affecting the $\tau$-row of the neutrino mixing matrix was improved, with $\alpha_{33}>$ 0.95 at the 95$\%$ confidence level., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures

24. Mixed extreme wave climate model for reanalysis databases

Abstract: Hindcast or wave reanalysis databases (WRDB) constitute a powerful source with respect to instrumental records in the design of offshore and coastal structures, since they offer important advantages for the statistical characterization of wave climate variables, such as continuous long time records of significant wave heights, mean and peak periods, etc. However, reanalysis data is less accurate than instrumental records, making extreme data analysis derived from WRDB prone to under predict design return period values. This paper proposes a mixed extreme value model to deal with maxima, which takes full advantage of both (i) hindcast or wave reanalysis and (ii) instrumental records, reducing the uncertainty in its predictions. The resulting mixed model consistently merges the information given by both kinds of data sets, and it can be applied to any extreme value analysis distribution, such as generalized extreme value, peaks over threshold or Pareto-Poisson. The methodology is illustrated using both synthetically generated and real data, the latter taken from a given location on the northern Spanish coast.

Abstract: Radiation pressure is a key mechanism by which stellar feedback disrupts molecular clouds and drives HII region expansion. This includes direct radiation pressure exerted by UV photons on dust grains, pressure associated with photoionization, and infrared (IR) radiation pressure on grains due to dust-reprocessed IR photons. We present a new method that combines high resolution mid-IR luminosities from JWST-MIRI, optical attenuation and nebular line measurements from VLT-MUSE, and HST H$\alpha$-based region sizes to estimate the strength of radiation pressure in $\approx 18,000$ HII regions across 19 nearby star-forming galaxies. This is the most extensive and direct estimate of these terms beyond the Local Group to date. In the disks of galaxies, we find that the total reprocessed IR pressure is on average 5% of the direct UV radiation pressure. This fraction rises to 10% in galaxy centers. We expect reprocessed IR radiation pressure to dominate over UV radiation pressure in regions where $L_{\rm F2100W}/L_{\rm H\alpha}^{\rm corr} \gtrsim 75$. Radiation pressure due to H ionizations is lower than pressure on dust in our sample, but appears likely to dominate the radiation pressure budget in dwarf galaxies similar to the Small Magellanic Cloud. The contribution from all radiation pressure terms appears to be subdominant compared to thermal pressure from ionized gas, reinforcing the view that radiation pressure is most important in compact, heavily embedded, and young regions., Comment: main text: 21 pages and 11 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

26. The electrostatic charge on a falling water drop

Abstract: Fluid triboelectrification, also known as flow electrification, remains an under-explored yet ubiquitous phenomenon with potential applications in various fields, from material science to planetary evolution. Building upon previous efforts to position water within the triboelectric series, we investigate the charge on individual, millimetric water drops falling through air. Our experiments measured the charge and mass of each drop using a Faraday cup mounted on a mass balance, and connected to an electrometer. For pure water in a glass syringe with a grounded metal tip, we find the charge per drop ($\Delta q/\Delta m$) was approximately -5 pC/g to -1 pC/g. This was independent of the release height of the drop, tip diameter and length, tip cleaning preparation, and whether the experiment was shielded with a Faraday cage. Biasing the tip to different voltages allowed for linear control of the drop charge, and the results were consistent with known electrochemical effects, namely the Volta potential expected between most metals and bulk water ($\approx$ -0.5 V). Introducing insulating plastic materials into the experiment (from the syringe body or tip) imparted large amounts of charge on the drops with apparent stochastic charge evolution. Together these results show that the flow electrification of water is more complex than previously reported, and is driven by various, material-dependent electrostatic processes., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: We study F-theory orientifolds, starting with products of two elliptic curves, but focusing mostly on a family of K3 surfaces, lattice polarized by the rank-17 lattice $\langle 8 \rangle \oplus 2D_8(-1)$, generalizing the family (to which it degenerates) of Kummer surfaces of products of two non-isogenous elliptic curves. After a thorough study of the complex geometry of this family and its elliptic fibrations, we proceed to study real structures on the K3 surfaces in the family which are equivariant with respect to an elliptic fibration. We also study the physics of the associated F-theory orientifolds with a particular focus on the impact of the real structure on the charge spectrum. 28. The PICS Project. I. The impact of metallicity and helium abundance on the bright end of the planetary nebula luminosity function

Abstract: Planetary nebulae (PNe) and their luminosity function (PNLF) in galaxies have been used as a cosmic distance indicator for decades, yet a fundamental understanding is still lacking to explain the universality of the PNLF among different galaxies. Models for the PNLF have generally assumed solar metallicities and artificial stellar populations. In this work, we investigate how metallicity and helium abundances affect the PNe and PNLF, and the importance of the initial-to-final mass relation (IFMR), to resolve the tension between PNLF observations and models. We introduce PICS (PNe In Cosmological Simulations), a PN model framework that accounts for metallicity and is applicable to realistic stellar populations from cosmological simulations and observations. The framework combines stellar evolution models with post-AGB tracks and PN models to obtain PNe from a parent stellar population. We find that metallicity plays an important role for the resulting PNe: old metal-rich populations can harbor much brighter PNe than old metal-poor ones. We show that the helium abundance is a vital ingredient at high metallicities and explore the impact on the PNLF of a possible saturation of the helium content at higher metallicities. We present PNLF grids for different stellar ages and metallicities, where the observed PNLF bright end can be reached even for old stellar populations of 10 Gyr at high metallicities. Finally, we find that the PNLFs of old stellar populations are very sensitive to the IFMR, allowing for the production of bright PNe. With PICS, we have laid the groundwork for studying how different models affect the PNe and PNLF. Two central ingredients for this are the metallicity and helium abundance. 29. RaccoonBot: An Autonomous Wire-Traversing Solar-Tracking Robot for Persistent Environmental Monitoring

Abstract: Environmental monitoring is used to characterize the health and relationship between organisms and their environments. In forest ecosystems, robots can serve as platforms to acquire such data, even in hard-to-reach places where wire-traversing platforms are particularly promising due to their efficient displacement. This paper presents the RaccoonBot, which is a novel autonomous wire-traversing robot for persistent environmental monitoring, featuring a fail-safe mechanical design with a self-locking mechanism in case of electrical shortage. The robot also features energy-aware mobility through a novel Solar tracking algorithm, that allows the robot to find a position on the wire to have direct contact with solar power to increase the energy harvested. 30. Alpha-element abundance patterns in star-forming regions of the local Universe

Abstract: (Abridged) We reassess the alpha-element abundance ratios (Ne/O, S/O, Ar/O) with respect to metallicity in ~1000 spectra of Galactic and extragalactic HII regions and star-forming galaxies (SFGs) of the local Universe. Using the DEep Spectra of Ionised REgions Database (DESIRED) Extended project (DESIRED-E), which includes spectra with direct electron temperature determinations, we homogeneously derive physical conditions and chemical abundances for all objects. Various ionisation correction factor (ICF) schemes are analyzed for Ne, S, and Ar to identify the most reliable abundance estimates. Our findings indicate that the ICF scheme by Izotov et al. (2006) better reproduces the Ne/O, S/O, and Ar/O trends. Ne/O ratios in HII regions display large dispersion and no clear dependence on O/H, suggesting that current ICF(Ne) schemes fail for these objects. However, SFGs show consistent linear relations with slightly positive slopes for log(Ne/O) vs. 12+log(O/H) or 12+log(Ne/H), likely influenced by metallicity-dependent O dust depletion and ICF effects. The log(S/O) vs. 12+log(O/H) distribution is largely constant, especially for HII regions or combined samples (SFGs + HII regions). Conversely, log(S/O) vs. 12+log(S/H) shows a tight linear fit with a positive slope, flattening at 12+log(S/H) < 6.0, suggesting S contributions from SNe Ia. For log(Ar/O) vs. 12+log(O/H), similar trends emerge for HII regions and SFGs, independent of ionisation degree or ICF(Ar). A slight log(Ar/O) decrease with increasing 12+log(O/H) contrasts with log(Ar/O) vs. 12+log(Ar/H), which shows a small positive slope, indicating a possible minor Ar contribution from SNe Ia., Comment: 20 pages, 13 Figures, 2 Tables in the main text. Abstract: In the era of precision measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters, it is necessary for experiments to disentangle discrepancies that may indicate physics beyond the Standard Model in the neutrino sector. KM3NeT/ORCA is a water Cherenkov neutrino detector under construction and anchored at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The detector is designed to study the oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos and determine the neutrino mass ordering. This paper focuses on the initial configuration of ORCA, referred to as ORCA6, which comprises six out of the foreseen 115 detection units of photosensors. A high-purity neutrino sample was extracted during 2020 and 2021, corresponding to an exposure of 433 kton-years. This sample is analysed following a binned log-likelihood approach to search for invisible neutrino decay, in a three-flavour neutrino oscillation scenario, where the third neutrino mass state $\nu_3$ decays into an invisible state, e.g. a sterile neutrino. The resulting best fit of the invisible neutrino decay parameter is $\alpha_3 = 0.92^{+1.08}_{-0.57}\times 10^{-4}~\mathrm{eV^2}$, corresponding to a scenario with $\theta_{23}$ in the second octant and normal neutrino mass ordering. Abstract: In this paper we develop a mathematical model combined with machine learning techniques to predict shade-seeking behavior in cows exposed to heat stress. The approach integrates advanced mathematical features, such as time-averaged thermal indices and accumulated heat stress metrics, obtained by mathematical analysis of data from a farm in Titaguas (Valencia, Spain), collected during the summer of 2023. Two predictive models, Random Forests and Neural Networks, are compared for accuracy, robustness, and interpretability. The Random Forest model is highlighted for its balance between precision and explainability, achieving an RMSE of $14.97$. The methodology also employs $5-$fold cross-validation to ensure robustness under real-world conditions. Abstract: Regularized estimation of quantitative ultrasound (QUS) parameters, such as attenuation and backscatter coefficients, has gained research interest. Recently, the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) has been applied successfully to estimate these parameters, by utilizing L2 and L1 norms for attenuation and backscatter coefficient regularization, respectively. While this method improves upon previous approaches, it does not fully leverage the prior knowledge of minimum physically feasible parameter values, sometimes yielding values outside the realistic range. This work addresses this limitation by incorporating minimum QUS parameter values as constraints to enhance ADMM estimation. Abstract: Context. The supernova remnant (SNR) W44 and its surroundings are a prime target for studying the acceleration of cosmic rays (CRs). Several previous studies established an extended gamma-ray emission that is set apart from the radio shell of W44. This emission is thought to originate from escaped high-energy CRs that interact with a surrounding dense molecular cloud complex. Aims. We present a detailed analysis of Fermi-LAT data with an emphasis on the spatial and spectral properties of W44 and its surroundings. We also report the results of the observations performed with the MAGIC telescopes of the northwestern region of W44. Finally, we present an interpretation model to explain the gamma-ray emission of the SNR and its surroundings. Methods. We first performed a detailed spatial analysis of 12 years of Fermi-LAT data at energies above 1 GeV, in order to exploit the better angular resolution, while we set a threshold of 100MeV for the spectral analysis. We performed a likelihood analysis of 174 hours of MAGIC data above 130 GeV using the spatial information obtained with Fermi-LAT. Results. The combined spectra of Fermi-LAT and MAGIC, extending from 100MeV to several TeV, were used to derive constraints on the escape of CRs. Using a time-dependent model to describe the particle acceleration and escape from the SNR, we show that the maximum energy of the accelerated particles has to be ' 40 GeV. However, our gamma-ray data suggest that a small number of lower-energy particles also needs to escape. We propose a novel model, the broken-shock scenario, to account for this effect and explain the gamma-ray emission.

Abstract: Mrk 421 was in its most active state around early 2010, which led to the highest TeV gamma-ray flux ever recorded from any active galactic nuclei. We aim to characterize the multiwavelength behavior during this exceptional year for Mrk 421, and evaluate whether it is consistent with the picture derived with data from other less exceptional years. We investigated the period from November 5, 2009, (MJD 55140) until July 3, 2010, (MJD 55380) with extensive coverage from very-high-energy (VHE; E$\,>\,$100$\,$GeV) gamma rays to radio with MAGIC, VERITAS, Fermi-LAT, RXTE, Swift, GASP-WEBT, VLBA, and a variety of additional optical and radio telescopes. We investigated the variability and correlation behavior among different energy bands in great detail. We find the strongest variability in X-rays and VHE gamma rays, and PSDs compatible with power-law functions. We observe strong correlations between X-rays and VHE gamma rays. We also report a marginally significant positive correlation between high-energy (HE; E$\,>\,$100$\,$MeV) gamma rays and the ultraviolet band. We detected marginally significant correlations between the HE and VHE gamma rays, and between HE gamma rays and the X-ray, that disappear when the large flare in February 2010 is excluded from the correlation study. The activity of Mrk 421 also yielded the first ejection of features in the VLBA images of the jet of Mrk 421. Yet the large uncertainties in the ejection times of these radio features prevent us from firmly associating them to the specific flares recorded during the campaign. We also show that the collected multi-instrument data are consistent with a scenario where the emission is dominated by two regions, a compact and extended zone, which could be considered as a simplified implementation of an energy-stratified jet as suggested by recent IXPE observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. Abstract: Quantum resistance is vital for emerging cryptographic systems as quantum technologies continue to advance towards large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers. Resistance may be offered by quantum key distribution (QKD), which provides information-theoretic security using quantum states of photons, but may be limited by transmission loss at long distances. An alternative approach uses classical means and is conjectured to be resistant to quantum attacks, so-called post-quantum cryptography (PQC), but it is yet to be rigorously proven, and its current implementations are computationally expensive. To overcome the security and performance challenges present in each, here we develop hybrid protocols by which QKD and PQC inter-operate within a joint quantum-classical network. In particular, we consider different hybrid designs that may offer enhanced speed and/or security over the individual performance of either approach. Furthermore, we present a method for analyzing the security of hybrid protocols in key distribution networks. Abstract: ObjectiveTo examine rates of postpartum hemorrhagic (PPH) morbidity among patients who did and did not have immediate skin-to-skin contact (SSC).MethodsThis study was a retrospective cohort of all non-anomalous, term singleton vaginal births at a Level IV center over 2 years. Exclusion criteria included COVID-19. Immediate SSC was defined as at least 60 min of direct contact initiated between parturient and neonate within 10 min of birth. The primary outcome was a composite of maternal morbidity related to PPH compared among those with and without immediate SSC. We used multivariable Poisson regression adjusted for possible confounders with robust error variance to determine the strength of the association.ResultsOf 8623 deliveries during the study period, 3520 (40.8%) deliveries were included; of which 2428 (55.5%) had immediate SSC and 1028 (31.0%) did not. Immediate SSC reduced the overall rate of composite morbidity (adjusted relative risk 0.78, 95% confidence interval 0.65-0.92), and rate of blood loss 1000 mL or greater, use of additional uterotonics, and use of mechanical tamponade. Blood loss and third stage of labor duration were significantly less for immediate SSC. Transfusion rate and hematocrit change after delivery, did not differ.ConclusionImmediate SSC among term vaginal deliveries was associated with a significant reduction in PPH. Emphasis on early contact for maternal benefit may increase uptake of SSC and provide an accessible intervention for PPH in high- and low-resource settings.

Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Early-onset Alzheimers disease (EOAD) and late-onset Alzheimers disease (LOAD) share similar amyloid etiology, but evidence from smaller-scale studies suggests that they manifest differently clinically. Current analyses sought to contrast the cognitive profiles of EOAD and LOAD. METHODS: Z-score cognitive-domain composites for 311 amyloid-positive sporadic EOAD and 314 amyloid-positive LOAD participants were calculated from baseline data from age-appropriate control cohorts. Z-score composites were compared between AD groups for each domain. RESULTS: After controlling for cognitive status, EOAD displayed worse visuospatial, executive functioning, and processing speed/attention skills relative to LOAD, and LOAD displayed worse language, episodic immediate memory, and episodic delayed memory. DISCUSSION: Sporadic EOAD possesses distinct cognitive profiles relative to LOAD. Clinicians should be alert for non-amnestic impairments in younger patients to ensure proper identification and intervention using disease-modifying treatments. HIGHLIGHTS: Both early-onset Alzheimers disease (EOAD) and late-onset Alzheimers disease (LOAD) participants displayed widespread cognitive impairments relative to their same-aged peers. Cognitive impairments were more severe for EOAD than for LOAD participants in visuospatial and executive domains. Memory and language impairments were more severe for LOAD than for EOAD participants Results were comparable after removing clinical phenotypes of posterior cortical atrophy (PCA), primary progressive aphasia (lv-PPA), and frontal-variant AD.

42. Detecting anxiety and depression in dialogues: a multi-label and explainable approach

Abstract: Anxiety and depression are the most common mental health issues worldwide, affecting a non-negligible part of the population. Accordingly, stakeholders, including governments' health systems, are developing new strategies to promote early detection and prevention from a holistic perspective (i.e., addressing several disorders simultaneously). In this work, an entirely novel system for the multi-label classification of anxiety and depression is proposed. The input data consists of dialogues from user interactions with an assistant chatbot. Another relevant contribution lies in using Large Language Models (LLMs) for feature extraction, provided the complexity and variability of language. The combination of LLMs, given their high capability for language understanding, and Machine Learning (ML) models, provided their contextual knowledge about the classification problem thanks to the labeled data, constitute a promising approach towards mental health assessment. To promote the solution's trustworthiness, reliability, and accountability, explainability descriptions of the model's decision are provided in a graphical dashboard. Experimental results on a real dataset attain 90 % accuracy, improving those in the prior literature. The ultimate objective is to contribute in an accessible and scalable way before formal treatment occurs in the healthcare systems.

Abstract: The BL Lacertae object VER J0521+211 underwent a notable flaring episode in February 2020. A short-term monitoring campaign, led by the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov) collaboration, covering a wide energy range from radio to very-high-energy (VHE, 100 GeV < E < 100 TeV) gamma rays was organised to study its evolution. These observations resulted in a consistent detection of the source over six consecutive nights in the VHE gamma-ray domain. Combining these nightly observations with an extensive set of multiwavelength data made modelling of the blazar's spectral energy distribution (SED) possible during the flare. This modelling was performed with a focus on two plausible emission mechanisms: i) a leptonic two-zone synchrotron-self-Compton scenario, and ii) a lepto-hadronic one-zone scenario. Both models effectively replicated the observed SED from radio to the VHE gamma-ray band. Furthermore, by introducing a set of evolving parameters, both models were successful in reproducing the evolution of the fluxes measured in different bands throughout the observing campaign. Notably, the lepto-hadronic model predicts enhanced photon and neutrino fluxes at ultra-high energies (E > 100 TeV). While the photon component, generated via decay of neutral pions, is not directly observable as it is subject to intense pair production (and therefore extinction) through interactions with the cosmic microwave background photons, neutrino detectors (e.g. IceCube) can probe the predicted neutrino component. Finally, the analysis of the gamma-ray spectra, as observed by MAGIC and the Fermi-LAT telescopes, yielded a conservative 95\% confidence upper limit of z \leq 0.244 for the redshift of this blazar., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: This Letter presents an investigation of low-energy electron-neutrino interactions in the Fermilab Booster Neutrino Beam by the MicroBooNE experiment, motivated by the excess of electron-neutrino-like events observed by the MiniBooNE experiment. This is the first measurement to use data from all five years of operation of the MicroBooNE experiment, corresponding to an exposure of $1.11\times 10^{21}$ protons on target, a $70\%$ increase on past results. Two samples of electron neutrino interactions without visible pions are used, one with visible protons and one without any visible protons. MicroBooNE data is compared to two empirical models that modify the predicted rate of electron-neutrino interactions in different variables in the simulation to match the unfolded MiniBooNE low energy excess. In the first model, this unfolding is performed as a function of electron neutrino energy, while the second model aims to match the observed shower energy and angle distributions of the MiniBooNE excess. This measurement excludes an electron-like interpretation of the MiniBooNE excess based on these models at $> 99\%$ CL$_\mathrm{s}$ in all kinematic variables., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

45. Replications, Revisions, and Reanalyses: Managing Variance Theories in Software Engineering

Abstract: Variance theories quantify the variance that one or more independent variables cause in a dependent variable. In software engineering (SE), variance theories are used to quantify -- among others -- the impact of tools, techniques, and other treatments on software development outcomes. To acquire variance theories, evidence from individual empirical studies needs to be synthesized to more generally valid conclusions. However, research synthesis in SE is mostly limited to meta-analysis, which requires homogeneity of the synthesized studies to infer generalizable variance. In this paper, we aim to extend the practice of research synthesis beyond meta-analysis. To this end, we derive a conceptual framework for the evolution of variance theories and demonstrate its use by applying it to an active research field in SE. The resulting framework allows researchers to put new evidence in a clear relation to an existing body of knowledge and systematically expand the scientific frontier of a studied phenomenon.

46. Quantum charge sensing using semiconductor device based on $\delta$-layer tunnel junctions

Abstract: We report a novel nanoscale device concept based on a highly doped $\delta$-layer tunnel junction embedded in a semiconductor for charge sensing. Recent advances in Atomic Precision Advanced Manufacturing (APAM) processes have enabled the fabrication of devices based on quasi-2D, highly conductive, highly doped regions in semiconductor materials. In this work, we demonstrate that FET-based sensors utilizing APAM $\delta$-layer tunnel junctions are ultrasensitive to the presence of charges near the tunnel junction, allowing the use of these devices for detecting charges by observing changes in the electrical current. We demonstrate that these devices can enhance the sensitivity in the limit, i.e. for small concentrations of charges, exhibiting significantly superior sensitivity compared to traditional FET-based sensors. We also propose that the extreme sensitivity arises from the strong quantization of the conduction band in these highly-confined systems.

47. HyperGS: Hyperspectral 3D Gaussian Splatting

Abstract: We introduce HyperGS, a novel framework for Hyperspectral Novel View Synthesis (HNVS), based on a new latent 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) technique. Our approach enables simultaneous spatial and spectral renderings by encoding material properties from multi-view 3D hyperspectral datasets. HyperGS reconstructs high-fidelity views from arbitrary perspectives with improved accuracy and speed, outperforming currently existing methods. To address the challenges of high-dimensional data, we perform view synthesis in a learned latent space, incorporating a pixel-wise adaptive density function and a pruning technique for increased training stability and efficiency. Additionally, we introduce the first HNVS benchmark, implementing a number of new baselines based on recent SOTA RGB-NVS techniques, alongside the small number of prior works on HNVS. We demonstrate HyperGS's robustness through extensive evaluation of real and simulated hyperspectral scenes with a 14db accuracy improvement upon previously published models.

48. $\textit{Ab initio}$ electron-phonon coupling theory of elastic helium atom scattering

Abstract: We propose a fully $ \textit{ab initio} $ approach to predicting thermal attenuation in elastic helium atom scattering amplitudes, validated through strong agreement with experiments on Nb(100) and (3$\times$1)-O/Nb(100) surfaces. Our results reveal the relative contributions from bulk, resonant, and surface phonon modes, as well as from different surface mode polarizations, providing insights into differences between smooth and corrugated surfaces. These findings advance understanding of surface dynamics and electron-phonon coupling, laying groundwork for future studies on surface superconductivity.

49. PICS: Planetary Nebulae in Cosmological Simulations -- Revelations of the Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function from Realistic Stellar Populations

Abstract: Even after decades of usage as an extragalactic standard candle, the universal bright end of the planetary nebula luminosity function (PNLF) still lacks a solid theoretical explanation. Until now, models have modeled planetary nebulae (PNe) from artificial stellar populations, without an underlying cosmological star formation history. We present PICS (PNe In Cosmological Simulations), a novel method of modeling PNe in cosmological simulations, through which PN populations for the first time naturally occur within galaxies of diverse evolutionary pathways. We find that only by using realistic stellar populations and their metallicities is it possible to reproduce the bright end of the PNLF for all galaxy types. In particular, the dependence of stellar lifetimes on metallicity has to be accounted for to produce bright PNe in metal-rich populations. Abstract: This paper presents the development and implementation of a versatile ad-hoc metropolitan-range Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) network. The approach presented integrates various types of physical channels and QKD protocols, and a mix of trusted and untrusted nodes. Unlike conventional QKD networks that predominantly depend on either fiber-based or free-space optical (FSO) links, the testbed presented amalgamates FSO and fiber-based links, thereby overcoming some inherent limitations. Various network deployment strategies have been considered, including permanent infrastructure and provisional ad-hoc links to eradicate coverage gaps. Furthermore, the ability to rapidly establish a network using portable FSO terminals and to investigate diverse link topologies is demonstrated. The study also showcases the successful establishment of a quantum-secured link to a cloud server.
