Abstract

We report on the measurement of the one-dimensional charged kaon correlation functions using 600~GeV/{\it c} $\Sigma^-$, $\pi^-$ and 540~GeV/{\it c} $p$ beams from the SELEX~(E781) experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. $K^{\pm}K^{\pm}$ correlation functions are studied for three transverse pair momentum, $k_T$, ranges and parameterized by a Gaussian form. The emission source radii, $R$, and the correlation strength, $\lambda$, are extracted. The analysis shows a decrease of the source radii with increasing kaon transverse pair momentum for all beam types., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The paper describes the SPHINX facility which includes a wide-aperture magnetic spectrometer with scintillation counters and hodoscopes, proportional chambers and drift tubes, multichannel electromagnetic and hadron calorimeters, a guard system, a RICH velocity spectrometer and a hodoscopical threshold Cherenkov detector for the identification of charged secondary particles. The SPHINX spectrometer, in its last modification, had the possibility to record 3000-4000 trigger events per an accelerator burst. Abstract

A search for narrow Theta(1540)^+, a candidate for pentaquark baryon with positive strangeness, has been performed in an exclusive proton-induced reaction p+C(N) \to Theta^+ \bar{K}^0 + C(N) on carbon nuclei or quasifree nucleons at E_{beam}=70 GeV (sqrt{s} = 11.5 GeV) studying nK^+, pK_S and pK_L decay channels of Theta(1540)^+ in four different final states of the Theta^+ \bar{K}^0 system. In order to assess the quality of the identification of the final states with neutron or K_L we reconstructed Lambda(1520)\to nK_S and phi\to K_LK_S decays in the calibration reactions p+C(N)\to Lambda(1520)K^+ + C(N) and p+C(N)\to p\phi + C(N). We found no evidence for narrow pentaquark peak in any of the studied final states and decay channels. Assuming that the production characteristics of the Theta^+ \bar{K^0} system are not drastically different from those of the Lambda(1520)K^+ and p\phi systems, we established upper limits on the cross section ratios sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0)/sigma(Lambda(1520)K^+) < 0.02 and sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0)/sigma(p\phi) < 0.15 at 90% CL and a preliminary upper limit for the forward hemisphere cross section sigma(Theta^+\bar{K}^0) < 30 nb/nucleon., Comment: 14 pages; 16 figures. Abstract

The radiative decay \Lambda(1520) --> \Lambda \gamma was measured directly in the study of exclusive diffractive-like reaction p + N --> \Lambda(1520) K^+ + N, \Lambda(1520) --> \Lambda \gamma with the SPHINX spectrometer. The values of the branching and partial width of this radiative decay were obtained: BR[\Lambda(1520) --> \Lambda \gamma] = (1.02+/-0.21(stat)+/-0.15(syst))x10^{-2} and \Gamma[\Lambda(1520) --> \Lambda \gamma] = 159+/-33(stat)+/-26(syst) keV., Comment: More detailed treatment of systematical uncertainties, minor clarifications and corrections, significant improvements in English. 18 pages, 6 figures, accepted by Phys.Lett.B

Abstract

In memory of an outstanding palaeoichthyologist Elga Mark-Kurik The range of diversity of psammosteids from the family Psammosteidae is still poorly known. Here a new species, Psammosteus ramosus sp. nov. Glinskiy, from the Amata Regional Stage of the Main Devonian Field is described. Its morphology, ornamentation, histology of exoskeletal plates, and micromeric elements are compared with those of other representatives of the family Psammosteidae. The comparison shows a close relationship of the new species with Psammosteus falcatus Obruchev, P. kiaeri Halstead Tarlo and P. pectinatus Obruchev, a group of species that is significantly different from other representatives of the genus Psammosteus and constitutes a separate evolutionary lineage. On the basis of morphological and histological features we here differentiate in the fields of tesserae of Psammosteidae the discrete micromeric elements of the ‘basic type’, known in Psammosteus bergi (Obruchev), P. levis Obruchev, P. livonicus Obruchev, P. maeandrinus Agassiz, P. megalopteryx (Trautschold), P. praecursor Obruchev and Karelosteus weberi Obruchev, and micromeric elements of the ‘progressive type’, known in Psammosteus falcatus, P. cf. kiaeri and P. ramosus sp. nov. 29. The tectonic subsidence evolution of the southern part of the East Barents sedimentary basin

Abstract

The history of the subsidence of the southern part of the East Barents sedimentary basin was reconstructed based on the interpretation of 6 seismic profiles along with data from rare deep wells. The total and tectonic subsidence were estimated, which made possible to determine the magnitude of the lithosphere stretching factor (β) throughout the history of the region. The values of the stretching factor (β) range from 2.5-3.0, for areas with highest thickness of sediments in the central part of the basin, to 1.25-1.66 for areas on the margins of the basin with lowest thickness of sediments. Close values of the stretching factor (β) characterize the Atlantic coast of North America in the area with predominant distribution of the transitional crust. Whether continental crust from adjacent areas of the Baltic shield (approximately 40 km) is accepted as undeformed, according to seismic data the crust thinning was approximately 2,5 that is close to thinning estimated from McKenzie model. The comparison of the obtained data with theoretical models of the passive margins subsidence indicates that the rifting and the transition to the stage of sedimentary basin formation occurred in accordance with the McKenzie uniform stretching model. Although available geological data show that the most intense rifting occurred in Late Devonian, shape of the total and tectonic subsidence show that the most intense deposition occurred in Permian and Triassic. This contradiction gives evidence for interpretation that after the Late Devonian rifting, a deep-water basin was formed and filled in only in Permian. Water depth estimated from interpretation of sedimentological and paleontological data varies from 1,0 to 3,5 km. According to shape of the tectonic subsidence curve, during Carboniferous water depth was close to 3,5 km.

Abstract

We report the first observation of two Cabibbo-suppressed decay modes, Ξ c + → Σ + π − π + and Ξ c + → Σ − π + π + . We observe 59 ± 14 over a background of 87, and 22 ± 8 over a background of 13 events, respectively, for the signals. The data were accumulated using the SELEX spectrometer during the 1996–1997 fixed target run at Fermilab, chiefly from a 600 GeV / c Σ − beam. The branching ratios of the decays relative to the Cabibbo-favored Ξ c + → Ξ − π + π + are measured to be B ( Ξ c + → Σ + π − π + ) / B ( Ξ c + → Ξ − π + π + ) = 0.48 ± 0.20 , and B ( Ξ c + → Σ − π + π + ) / B ( Ξ c + → Ξ − π + π + ) = 0.18 ± 0.09 , respectively. We also report branching ratios for the same decay modes of the Λ c + relative to Λ c + → p K − π + .
