Energy management has been widely considered as an effective means for achieving energy efficiency and sustainable competitiveness in industrial organizations. However, several barriers prevent its diffused implementation. It is thus crucial to assess and evaluate energy management and the corresponding services in the industrial context in order to further promote them. Extent literature has neither defined industrial energy management services adequately, nor developed any models that consider the characterization of energy management services to support industrial decision making. In light of this, our study aims to provide a comprehensive framework to help key industrial decision-makers and policymakers in making better informed decisions regarding the adoption of energy management activities. We accomplish this by explicitly taking into consideration the characteristics of energy management services based on 25 attributes belonging to four categories i.e., implementation, impacted area, impact on production resources and productivity. In addition, we shed further light on the practical implementation of energy management activities by also placing focus on the link between the implications of their adoption on production resources and the subsequent impact on industrial operations. The framework is validated by a sample of selected energy management experts within Australian organizations, followed by an application in an industrial context. The study concludes with suggestions for industrial decision makers and an outlook on further research avenues.

In Bangladesh, despite available feedstock for producing biogas, the development of biogas production has been very slow. The objective of this research was to study the drivers for and barriers to biogas technology implementation in the country. As the research involved different types of stakeholders related to biogas production, the outcome provides clarity about the factors influencing the profusion of biogas production in Bangladesh. The outcome of the study identifies poor research and development, lack of coordination among stakeholders, an immature biogas market, lack of awareness and no feed-in tariff policy as the main barriers. In the case of drivers, the motivation of producing biogas as an efficient way of using waste, the availability of local experts, the attractiveness of a growing renewable energy market and the contribution of biogas technology in adaptation to climate change were found to be the most important factors. The study’s outcomes are found to be similar to other studies from developing countries with similar socio-economic status. In accordance with the important drivers and barriers identified in this study, recommendations for increasing the diffusion of biogas in Bangladesh are also presented at the end of the article.

Considering the ongoing significance of global warming and green-house gas emissions, energy efficiency has become one of the major instruments towards improved sustainability and industrial competitiveness. Extant literature has been addressing energy efficiency in the industrial context; however, a gap still remaining to discuss energy efficiency measures with production resources. Thus, this paper aims to propose a preliminary framework linking industrial energy efficiency measures to production resources. In this context, electrical motors in industrial environments are considered. The framework can play a key role in understanding the impacts of energy efficiency measures. The paper concludes with interesting future research avenues.

Energy is considered as one of the significant benchmarks towards sustainable growth. Due to the recent economic growth, energy demand is increasing day by day in Bangladesh. The power generation mainly relies on fossil fuels though there are plans to increase the renewable energy share by the concern stakeholders. Considering the global warming, energy generation from renewable sources is considered as a sustainable way to mitigate the anthropogenic emission. This study, therefore, addresses the potentiality of biogas production from municipal waste and agricultural residues in a city territory of Dhaka namely Hazaribagh. The potential sources include wastes from two markets, six slaughterhouses, domestic wastes, one poultry farm and three croplands. The calculations made in this study to estimate the amount of biogas and electricity from the described sources are done in a simple way, just to illustrate the potential. This study suggests that there is a good potentiality of biogas production and electricity generation from municipal wastes and agricultural residues of Hazaribagh. Moreover, this study also mentions the significant actors like government, future owners, people and so on that are needed to be incorporated to implement biogas solution in a city territory.

The aim of this paper was to study energy management and improved energy efficiency among large iron and steel mills in Bangladesh. The results show that there are some barriers to energy management practices among large steel mills, the most important barriers being the perceived absence of cost-effective technical measures, high perceived risks due to uncertain future energy costs and poor information quality. However, this study has shown that the reduction in energy costs due to improved energy efficiency constitutes the most important driver for energy efficiency in the studied steel mills. The results also show that most of the steel mills have not had any technical energy efficiency improvement measures implemented in the production process. Moreover, the steel mills seem unfamiliar with the concept of including energy service companies, and the lack of information or awareness seems to be the main reason behind this. The paper also finds that energy efficiency is perceived to be able to be improved by 6%–8% through energy management practices.

Industry 4.0 concept is captivating the attention globally in a substantial rate that encompasses industrial digitalization with the means of advanced technical features. Maintaining the highest standard of industrial processes, Industry 4.0 demands to ensure energy efficiency also. Industries must ensure energy efficiency during the process flows, keeping in mind about the energy cost, carbon emission, and resource efficiency. Unfortunately, despite a significant potential for energy efficiency exists, that can be addressed by industries, implementing energy management practices. However, industries are still disinclined to take advantages of such opportunities. Research in this domain has little explored the potential relationships between energy management and Industry 4.0. In the paper, we aim at offering an overview of industrial energy management and related tools as well as Industry 4.0, preliminary discussing potential opportunities and synergies.

Bangladesh faced a substantial growth in primary energy demand in the last few years. According to several studies, energy generation is not the only means to address energy demand; efficient energy management practices are also very critical. A pertinent contribution in the energy management at the industrial sector ensures the proper utilization of energy. Energy management and its efficiency in the textile industries of Bangladesh are studied in this paper. The outcomes demonstrate several barriers to energy management practices which are inadequate technical cost-effective measures, inadequate capital expenditure, and poor research and development. However, this study also demonstrates that the risk of high energy prices in the future, assistance from energy professionals, and an energy management scheme constitute the important drivers for the implementation of energy efficiency measures in the studied textile mills. The studied textile industries seem unaccustomed to the dedicated energy service company concept, and insufficient information regarding energy service companies (ESCOs) and the shortage of trained professionals in energy management seem to be the reasons behind this. This paper likewise finds that 3–4% energy efficiency improvements can be gained with the help of energy management practices in these industries.

Sustainable energy generation at a low cost is a great challenge for developing countries like Bangladesh. The conventional power resources are expensive and scarce. With the recent economic growth of Bangladesh, the energy demand is increasing day by day. It has become very challenging to fulfil the energy demand with the conventional energy sources. Therefore, it is required to find the alternative way for power generation with the available energy sources. The alternative resources have to be available, cheap and environmentally friendly. The electricity generation from waste is becoming popular nowadays as renewable energy sources. This paper represents the biomass potential for power generation in Chittagong city, Bangladesh through literature review and software simulation. It is found that about 49 MW of electricity can be produced from the wastes that can not only address the power lacking but also waste management system.

PV based hybrid mini grid becomes an alternative choice of solar home system (SHS) for off-grid rural electrification in Bangladesh. Several hybrid mini grid projects are implemented in remote areas and different challenges are indentified. This paper presents a discussion of four key challenges in technical, economic, social and policy area for the implementation of hybrid mini grid projects in Bangaldesh. It concludes with a comaprtive analysis to figure out the key challenges impact in the system.

World is heading towards the crisis of fossil fuel. Energy crisis is more acute in Bangladesh, as there is no petro-fuel source but only natural gas. It has among the lowest per capita energy (240 kg oil equivalents) consumption in the world and is severely dependent on additional environmentally friendly renewable energy resources in the future. To cope up with present situation and to reduce dependency on imported fuel, Bangladesh government is encouraging the use of renewable energy sources. In this circumstances, biofuel can be a very good alternative fuel for transportation. This paper gives insight into biofuel production feasibility and it's usage for road transport can play an important role in the biggest metropolitan city of Bangladesh and contributes to knowledge on how to perform similar studies. Resource-focused assessment including feedstock from the waste sector, agricultural sector, forestry sector and aquatic environments partially considering technological and economic constraints. Sufficient evidence have been found for biofuel production and can met at-least 10% of energy demand for road transport of Dhaka city, Bangladesh. Without compromising with food security the study suggests that it is possible to significantly increase the biofuel production, and to do this as an integrated part of the existing society also contributing with positive societal synergies.

Energy needs are being met through fossil fuels in Bangladesh. As a result, fossil fuel is diminishing in every year and fuel price is increasing because of high usage. At present power generation of Bangladesh mainly depends on imported fossil fuel. To cope up with present situation and to reduce dependency on imported fuel, Bangladesh government is encouraging the use of renewable energy sources. Since diesel engines have versatile uses like in irrigation systems and small electricity generators, use of diesel is much higher than any other gasoline fuels. Mustard is a widely growing plant in Bangladesh and every year production of mustard seed exceeds demand. So attempt was to use excess mustard oil as an alternative to diesel fuel. Fuel properties and performance test of small engine are done by different biodiesel blends in the laboratory with standard procedure. It is found that bio-diesel has slightly different properties than diesel fuel and engine is capable of running without difficulty with a deviation from optimum performance. Different bio-diesel blends have been used with modified fuel supply system to compare engine performance to determine optimum blend for different operating conditions.

Bangladesh has among the lowest per capita energy (240 kg oil equivalents) consumption in the world and is severely dependent on additional environmentally friendly renewable energy resources in the future. Among the possible energy resources that could be explored is the potential geothermal energy in regions of higher geothermal gradients with favorable geo-tectonic setting and ideal petro-physical properties. A preliminary examination of bottom hole temperatures of a large number of on-shore wells spread over a vast area in the eastern part of the country, especially in Thakurgaon-Mymensingh-Sunamgonj-Sylhet through in the Bengal fore deep, strongly suggests that several other areas are of great interest for further studies in order to determine their geothermal energy potential. Bangladesh has witnessed a high demand for uninterrupted electricity due to rapid civilization in the last few years. Bangladesh needs now a reliable green energy sources as its power sector beset by many infrastructural problems (inefficient transmission system, very old power stations and cumbersome decision making process). Bangladesh has taken initiative to generate 25000MW electricity within 2021. In this regard, geothermal energy can be a viable and useful alternative and this paper proposes the prospects of its introduction to the power sector of Bangladesh. In this paper, a study is presented that shows the suitable locations in Bangladesh where geothermal power plants can be set up easily. Recently, the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has approved the establishment of the first ever geothermal power plant (200MW) in the country. A total of approximately 1000 MW can be added into the energy grid of Bangladesh through geothermal power systems. The geothermal energy is green, indigenous, locally occurring and continuously available independent of climatic changes. It will help to reduce the huge oil bill that the country is facing now, provided the national planners give adequate attention and support for the development of geothermal energy at a rapid pace to reduce the severe electricity crisis in Bangladesh as other energy resources like peat, hydropower, nuclear, wind, tidal / waves are not significant at present.

“Smart Grid” is a modern concept which refers to the conversion of the mainstream or typical electric power grid to a modern power grid. This new conversion is a foreseeable solution to the power system problems of the modern century. Rejuvenation of the current electric power distribution system is an important step to implement the Smart Grid technology. So, distribution system engineers should be acquainted with the knowledge of Smart Distribution System. Also the customers should acknowledge the benefits that they will be enjoying from this modernized power system. There are power crisis everywhere in the world, besides there is system loss in the existing power system. It is happening in Bangladesh also. To reduce power crisis renewable source of energy like solar energy, wind energy, raw coal energy may be used. But the quantity of electricity produced by this renewable energy source is low and several kilowatts range. This electricity is utilized by smart grid which is hard for usual power grid system. For this reason we need hybrid ac/dc smart control grid system. In this report models using Wind-mil Software is proposed for reducing system loss and also incorporate smart metering so that the power flow can reach easily to the consumers. Smart grid also helps sole proprietor and individual business man to sell their little amount of electricity to the grid which they produce by their own entrepreneurship through smart meter. Line loss and regulated voltage, regulator and capacitor are also inserted here to reduce the loss and make the effective and efficient power supply to the consumer. This metering is also centrally controlled and works over a huge area. At present developing country should develop this system.
