Abstract Size- and shape-tailored copper (Cu) nanocrystals can offer vicinal planes for facile carbon dioxide (CO2) activation. Despite extensive reactivity benchmarks, a correlation between CO2 conversion and morphology structure has not yet been established at vicinal Cu interfaces. Herein, ambient pressure scanning tunneling microscopy reveals step-broken Cu nanocluster evolutions on the Cu(997) surface under 1 mbar CO2(g). The CO2 dissociation reaction produces carbon monoxide (CO) adsorbate and atomic oxygen (O) at Cu step-edges, inducing complicated restructuring of the Cu atoms to compensate for increased surface chemical potential energy at ambient pressure. The CO molecules bound at under-coordinated Cu atoms contribute to the reversible Cu clustering with the pressure gap effect, whereas the dissociated oxygen leads to irreversible Cu faceting geometries. Synchrotron-based ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy identifies the chemical binding energy changes in CO-Cu complexes, which proves the characterized real-space evidence for the step-broken Cu nanoclusters under CO(g) environments. Our in situ surface observations provide a more realistic insight into Cu nanocatalyst designs for efficient CO2 conversion to renewable energy sources during C1 chemical reactions.

The correlation between the structural phase transition (SPT) and oxygen vacancy in SrRuO3 (SRO) thin films was investigated by in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). In situ XRD shows that the SPT occurs from a monoclinic SRO phase to a tetragonal SRO phase near ∼200 °C, regardless of the pressure environment. On the other hand, significant core level shifts in both the Ru and Sr photoemission spectra are found under ultrahigh vacuum, but not under the oxygen pressure environment. The directions and behavior of the core level shift of Ru and Sr are attributed to the formation of oxygen vacancy across the SPT temperature of SRO. The analysis of in situ XRD and AP-XPS results provides an evidence for the formation of metastable surface oxide possibly due to the migration of internal oxygen atoms across the SPT temperature, indicating the close relationship between oxygen vacancy and SPT in SRO thin films.

Carbon deposition from CO and other carbon-containing fuels is a major cause of the performance degradation of catalysts and electrocatalysts in many energy conversion devices, including low-temperature solid oxide cells (LT-SOCs). In this work, we present direct observation of carbon deposition on thin-film CeO2 electrodes at LT-SOC operating temperatures (450 °C) in a CO/CO2 atmosphere by in operando X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In contrast to the general view that CeO2 is a carbon tolerant material, significant carbon formation was observed on CeO2 during CO2 electrolysis, with no other catalyst present. Moreover, carbon deposition on CeO2 demonstrated an intriguing threshold onset formation against surface Ce3+ concentration. With the aid of Monte Carlo simulations, we propose the neighboring Ce3+-Ce3+ pairs to be a critical catalytic structure that facilitates carbon deposition from CO. Finally, we propose mitigation of carbon deposition on CeO2 by doping CeO2 with non-redox-active cations, and proved this concept using 50% Gd- and 50% Zr-doped CeO2 as an example system. These findings provide an in-depth understanding of the mechanism of carbon deposition on CeO2 during electrochemical reactions and can guide the design of carbon-resistant CeO2-based electrocatalysts.

The surface chemical states of Pd(100) during CO oxidation were investigated using ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and mass spectroscopy. Under the reactant ratio of CO/O 2 = 0.1, i.e. an oxygen-rich reaction condition, the formation of surface oxides was observed with the onset of CO oxidation reaction at T = 525 K. As the reactant ratio (CO/O 2 ) increased from 0.1 to 1.0, ∼ 90 % surface oxides remains on surface during the reaction. Upon the formation of surface oxides, the core level shift of oxygen gas phase peak was observed, indicating that change of surface work function. As CO oxidation takes places, i.e. making a transition from CO covered surface to the oxidic surface, the work functions of surface oxide on Pd(100) and Pt(110) display opposite behavior.

As the CO/O2 ratio increases, the production of CO2 increases continuously and the surface temperature also increases. Interestingly, during the mass transfer limiting regions, the amount of surface oxide changes little while the chemisorbed oxygen is being reduced. .

The use of ceria as catalyst in hydrogenation reactions is a recent trend, as they were uncovered to be active on a number of substrates, including alkynes, alkenes, and enones. While some studies focused on the use of well‐defined shapes, others emphasized the interest of defective structures. Overall, the meeting point of these studies is the need to characterize the surface reactivity vs. H2, by considering a number of interesting textures (films, nanopowders with various grain size or porosity), using monitoring techniques that preserve the original features of the materials. A key question is in particular to assess the possibility to form surface hydride through homolytic H2 splitting at cerium sites rather than at the oxygen one, a route recently highlighted as plausible. To address this question on small crystallites of CeO2, we designed a low‐temperature synthetic route for nanorods with an average grain size of 10 nm. Then, we employed near‐ambient‐pressure X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy as an operando tool to monitor the cerium surface oxidation state during the initial annealing of the nanopowders, followed by exposure to a moderate pressure of H2 (0.52 mbar). We demonstrate that H2 homolytic splitting at cerium sites is the main activation process on this surface at 100 °C, leading to the oxidation of ca. 30 % of the surface cerium atoms from Ce3+ to Ce4+. The surface hydride species were however not stable at 250 °C, H2 was released, and cerium reduced back to Ce3+. A similar mechanism was observed on a defective ceria material obtained by calcination of CeO(OH)2, with comparable intensities. Overall, we report here CeO2 nanorods, exposing predominantly {100} and {110} facets, as showing an interesting surface reactivity for potential application in hydrogenation reactions, and we expose a straight operando methodology to delineate suitable temperatures to be used. The structural, spectroscopic and electronic properties of Na and K birnessites were investigated from ambient conditions (birA) to complete dehydration, and the involved mechanisms were scrutinized. Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations were employed to derive structural models for lamellar A0.33MnO2·xH2O (A = Na+ or K+, x = 0 or 0.66), subsequently compared with the experimental results obtained for Na0.30MnO2·0.75H2O and K0.22MnO2·0.77H2O materials. Thermal analysis (TGA-DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and Near Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) measurements were conducted for both birnessites. Dehydration under vacuum, annealing, or controlled relative humidity were considered. Results indicated that complete birnessite dehydration was a two-stage process. In the first stage, water removal from the interlayer of fully hydrated birnessite (birA) down to a molar H2O/A ratio of ∼2 (birB) led to the progressive shrinkage of the interlayer distance (3% for Na birnessite, 1% for K birnessite). In the second stage, water-free (birC) domains with a shorter interlayer distance (20% for Na birnessite, 10% for K birnessite) appeared and coexisted with birB domains. Then, birB was essentially transformed into birC when complete dehydration was achieved. The vibrational properties of birA were consistent with strong intermolecular interactions among water molecules, whereas partially dehydrated birnessite (birB) showed a distinct feature, with 3 (for Na-bir) and 2 (for K-bir) vibrations that were reproduced by DFT calculations for organized water into the interlayer (x = 0.66). The study also demonstrated that the electronic structure of Na birnessite depends on the interlayer water content. The external Na+ electronic level (Na 2p) was slightly destabilized (+0.3 eV binding energy) under near ambient conditions (birA) compared to drier conditions (birB and birC). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CO2 methanation, also known as the Sabatier reaction, is of great environmental interest as a sustainable process for energy production and storage. Herein, we report the development of a Ni–La2O3 catalyst for CO2 methanation prepared upon reduction of a LaNiO3 perovskite precursor. The perovskite-based catalyst exhibits enhanced activity, high methane selectivity and improved stability when compared to Ni–La2O3 prepared through conventional impregnation methods. The transformation of the LaNiO3 perovskite precursor upon thermal activation in H2 was found to have a profound impact on the catalytic properties of the resulting material. The size and stability of exsolved Ni nanoparticles after prolonged reaction were investigated using ex situ electron microscopy. Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy, as well as soft and tender X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies (AP-XPS/HAXPES), provides detailed insights into the evolution of bulk and surface phases during the transition of the perovskite to its active catalytic state. Our findings indicate that processes beyond the well-established exsolution of nanoparticles, such as lanthana spillover onto nickel, may occur during H2 activation. More importantly, in situ spectroscopy under CO2 methanation conditions revealed that the surface's affinity for La-hydroxide or La-carbonate formation significantly influences the reactivity. Specifically, we found that La-hydroxide acts as a precursor for the formation of La-oxycarbonate (hexagonal La2O2CO3 phase), a crucial element of the active exsolved catalyst. In contrast, in the absence of La-hydroxide, La-carbonates (La2(CO3)3) formed on the surface, blocking the active sites of the supported catalyst. Our research examines hitherto unrecognized processes affecting the reactivity of exsolved perovskites, highlighting LaNiO3 as a promising catalyst for CO2 methanation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The introduction of atomic layer deposition (ALD), to the microelectronics industry has introduced a large number of new possible materials able to be deposited in layers with atomic thickness control. One such material is the high-κ oxide HfO2; thermally stable and ultrathin HfO2 films deposited by ALD are a significant contender to replace SiO2 as the gate oxide in capacitor applications. We present a mechanistic study of the first deposition cycle of HfO2 on the Si(111) surface using tetrakis(dimethylamido) hafnium (TDMAHf) and water as precursors using operando ambient pressure x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Here, we show that the hydroxylation of the clean Si(111) surface by residual water vapor, resulting in a 0.3 monolayer coverage of hydroxyls, leads to instantaneous full surface coverage of TDMAHf. The change in the atomic ratio of Hf to C/N found during the first deposition half-cycle, however, does not match the assumed immediate ligand loss through reaction with surface hydroxyls. One would expect an immediate loss of ligands, indicated by a Hf:N ratio of approximately 1:3 as TDMAHf deposits onto the surface; however, a Hf:N ratio of 1:3.6 is observed. The partial hydroxylation on the Si(111) surface leads to binding through the TDMAHf ligand N atoms resulting in both N and CH3 being found remaining on the surface post water half-cycle. Although there is evidence of ligand exchange reactions occurring at Si–OH sites, it also seems that N binding can occur on bare Si, highlighting the complexity of the substrate/precursor reaction even when hydroxyls are present. Moreover, the initial low coverage of Si–OH/Si–H appears to severely limit the amount of Hf deposited, which we hypothesize is due to the specific geometry of the initial arrangement of Si–OH/Si–H on the rest- and adatoms.
