Abstract: We analyzed the 7.92$\times 10^{11}$ cosmic-ray-induced muon events collected by the IceCube Neutrino Observatory from May 13, 2011, when the fully constructed experiment started to take data, to May 12, 2023. This dataset provides an up-to-date cosmic-ray arrival direction distribution in the Southern Hemisphere with unprecedented statistical accuracy covering more than a full period length of a solar cycle. Improvements in Monte Carlo event simulation and better handling of year-to-year differences in data processing significantly reduce systematic uncertainties below the level of statistical fluctuations compared to the previously published results. We confirm the observation of a change in the angular structure of the cosmic-ray anisotropy between 10 TeV and 1 PeV, more specifically in the 100-300 TeV energy range.

Abstract: Building on work of Doyle and Hyde on polynomial maps in one variable, we produce for each odd integer $d \geq 2$ a H\'enon map of degree $d$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ with at least $(d-4)^2$ integral periodic points. This provides a quadratic lower bound on any conjectural uniform bound for periodic rational points of H\'enon maps. 3. Personalization of Wearable Sensor-Based Joint Kinematic Estimation Using Computer Vision for Hip Exoskeleton Applications

Abstract: Accurate lower-limb joint kinematic estimation is critical for applications such as patient monitoring, rehabilitation, and exoskeleton control. While previous studies have employed wearable sensor-based deep learning (DL) models for estimating joint kinematics, these methods often require extensive new datasets to adapt to unseen gait patterns. Meanwhile, researchers in computer vision have advanced human pose estimation models, which are easy to deploy and capable of real-time inference. However, such models are infeasible in scenarios where cameras cannot be used. To address these limitations, we propose a computer vision-based DL adaptation framework for real-time joint kinematic estimation. This framework requires only a small dataset (i.e., 1-2 gait cycles) and does not depend on professional motion capture setups. Using transfer learning, we adapted our temporal convolutional network (TCN) to stiff knee gait data, allowing the model to further reduce root mean square error by 9.7% and 19.9% compared to a TCN trained on only able-bodied and stiff knee datasets, respectively. Our framework demonstrates a potential for smartphone camera-trained DL models to estimate real-time joint kinematics across novel users in clinical populations with applications in wearable robots.

Abstract: Photonic quantum information processing in metropolitan quantum networks lays the foundation for cloud quantum computing [1, 2], secure communication [3, 4], and the realization of a global quantum internet [5, 6]. This paradigm shift requires on-demand and high-rate generation of flying qubits and their quantum state teleportation over long distances [7]. Despite the last decade has witnessed an impressive progress in the performances of deterministic photon sources [8-11], the exploitation of distinct quantum emitters to implement all-photonic quantum teleportation among distant parties has remained elusive. Here, we overcome this challenge by using dissimilar quantum dots whose electronic and optical properties are engineered by light-matter interaction [12], multi-axial strain [13] and magnetic fields [14] so as to make them suitable for the teleportation of polarization qubits. This is demonstrated in a hybrid quantum network harnessing both fiber connections and 270 m free-space optical link connecting two buildings of the University campus in the center of Rome. The protocol exploits GPS-assisted synchronization, ultra-fast single photon detectors as well as stabilization systems that compensate for atmospheric turbulence. The achieved teleportation state fidelity reaches up to 82+-1%, above the classical limit by more than 10 standard deviations. Our field demonstration of all-photonic quantum teleportation opens a new route to implement solid-state based quantum relays and builds the foundation for practical quantum networks.

5. Motion Analysis of Upper Limb and Hand in a Haptic Rotation Task

Abstract: Humans seem to have a bias to overshoot when rotating a rotary knob blindfolded around a specified target angle (i.e. during haptic rotation). Whereas some influence factors that strengthen or weaken such an effect are already known, the underlying reasons for the overshoot are still unknown. This work approaches the topic of haptic rotations by analyzing a detailed recording of the movement. We propose an experimental framework and an approach to investigate which upper limb and hand joint movements contribute significantly to a haptic rotation task and to the angle overshoot based on the acquired data. With stepwise regression with backward elimination, we analyze a rotation around 90 degrees counterclockwise with two fingers under different grasping orientations. Our results showed that the wrist joint, the sideways finger movement in the proximal joints, and the distal finger joints contributed significantly to overshooting. This suggests that two phenomena are behind the overshooting: 1) The significant contribution of the wrist joint indicates a bias of a hand-centered egocentric reference frame. 2) Significant contribution of the finger joints indicates a rolling of the fingertips over the rotary knob surface and, thus, a change of contact point for which probably the human does not compensate.

6. Creation and Evaluation of a Food Product Image Dataset for Product Property Extraction

Abstract: The enormous progress in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) enables retail companies to automate their processes and thus to save costs. Thereby, many AI-based automation approaches are based on machine learning and computer vision. The realization of such approaches requires high-quality training data. In this paper, we describe the creation process of an annotated dataset that contains 1,034 images of single food products, taken under studio conditions, annotated with 5 class labels and 30 object detection labels, which can be used for product recognition and classification tasks. We based all images and labels on standards presented by GS1, a global non-profit organisation. 7. Adaptive Kinematic Modeling for Improved Hand Posture Estimates Using a Haptic Glove

Abstract: Most commercially available haptic gloves compromise the accuracy of hand-posture measurements in favor of a simpler design with fewer sensors. While inaccurate posture data is often sufficient for the task at hand in biomedical settings such as VR-therapy-aided rehabilitation, measurements should be as precise as possible to digitally recreate hand postures as accurately as possible. With these applications in mind, we have added extra sensors to the commercially available Dexmo haptic glove by Dexta Robotics and applied kinematic models of the haptic glove and the user's hand to improve the accuracy of hand-posture measurements. In this work, we describe the augmentations and the kinematic modeling approach. Additionally, we present and discuss an evaluation of hand posture measurements as a proof of concept.

8. Tracking Tumors under Deformation from Partial Point Clouds using Occupancy Networks

Abstract: To track tumors during surgery, information from preoperative CT scans is used to determine their position. However, as the surgeon operates, the tumor may be deformed which presents a major hurdle for accurately resecting the tumor, and can lead to surgical inaccuracy, increased operation time, and excessive margins. This issue is particularly pronounced in robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN), where the kidney undergoes significant deformations during operation. Toward addressing this, we introduce a occupancy network-based method for the localization of tumors within kidney phantoms undergoing deformations at interactive speeds. We validate our method by introducing a 3D hydrogel kidney phantom embedded with exophytic and endophytic renal tumors. It closely mimics real tissue mechanics to simulate kidney deformation during in vivo surgery, providing excellent contrast and clear delineation of tumor margins to enable automatic threshold-based segmentation. Our findings indicate that the proposed method can localize tumors in moderately deforming kidneys with a margin of 6mm to 10mm, while providing essential volumetric 3D information at over 60Hz. 9. Towards Robust Algorithms for Surgical Phase Recognition via Digital Twin-based Scene Representation

Abstract: Purpose: Surgical phase recognition (SPR) is an integral component of surgical data science, enabling high-level surgical analysis. End-to-end trained neural networks that predict surgical phase directly from videos have shown excellent performance on benchmarks. However, these models struggle with robustness due to non-causal associations in the training set, resulting in poor generalizability. Our goal is to improve model robustness to variations in the surgical videos by leveraging the digital twin (DT) paradigm -- an intermediary layer to separate high-level analysis (SPR) from low-level processing (geometric understanding). This approach takes advantage of the recent vision foundation models that ensure reliable low-level scene understanding to craft DT-based scene representations that support various high-level tasks. Methods: We present a DT-based framework for SPR from videos. The framework employs vision foundation models to extract representations. We embed the representation in place of raw video inputs in the state-of-the-art Surgformer model. The framework is trained on the Cholec80 dataset and evaluated on out-of-distribution (OOD) and corrupted test samples. Results: Contrary to the vulnerability of the baseline model, our framework demonstrates strong robustness on both OOD and corrupted samples, with a video-level accuracy of 51.1 on the challenging CRCD dataset, 96.0 on an internal robotics training dataset, and 64.4 on a highly corrupted Cholec80 test set. Conclusion: Our findings lend support to the thesis that DT-based scene representations are effective in enhancing model robustness. Future work will seek to improve the feature informativeness, automate feature extraction, and incorporate interpretability for a more comprehensive framework.

10. Sensing Accuracy Optimization for Communication-assisted Dual-baseline UAV-InSAR

Abstract: In this paper, we study the optimization of the sensing accuracy of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based dual-baseline interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) systems. A swarm of three UAV-synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems is deployed to image an area of interest from different angles, enabling the creation of two independent digital elevation models (DEMs). To reduce the InSAR sensing error, i.e., the height estimation error, the two DEMs are fused based on weighted averaging techniques into one final DEM. The heavy computations required for this process are performed on the ground. To this end, the radar data is offloaded in real time via a frequency division multiple access (FDMA) air-to-ground backhaul link. In this work, we focus on improving the sensing accuracy by minimizing the worst-case height estimation error of the final DEM. To this end, the UAV formation and the power allocated for offloading are jointly optimized based on alternating optimization (AO), while meeting practical InSAR sensing and communication constraints. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed solution can significantly improve the sensing accuracy compared to classical single-baseline UAV-InSAR systems and other benchmark schemes.

Abstract: In a well-ordered crystalline solid, insulating behaviour can arise from two mechanisms: electrons can either scatter off a periodic potential, thus forming band gaps that can lead to a band insulator, or they localize due to strong interactions, resulting in a Mott insulator. For an even number of electrons per unit cell, either band- or Mott-insulators can theoretically occur. However, unambiguously identifying an unconventional Mott-insulator with an even number of electrons experimentally has remained a longstanding challenge due to the lack of a momentum-resolved fingerprint. This challenge has recently become pressing for the layer dimerized van der Waals compound Nb$_3$Br$_8$, which exhibits a puzzling magnetic field-free diode effect when used as a weak link in Josephson junctions, but has previously been considered to be a band-insulator. In this work, we present a unique momentum-resolved signature of a Mott-insulating phase in the spectral function of Nb$_3$Br$_8$: the top of the highest occupied band along the out-of-plane dimerization direction $k_z$ has a momentum space separation of $\Delta k_z=2\pi/d$, whereas the valence band maximum of a band insulator would be separated by less than $\Delta k_z=\pi/d$, where $d$ is the average spacing between the layers. As the strong electron correlations inherent in Mott insulators can lead to unconventional superconductivity, identifying Nb$_3$Br$_8$ as an unconventional Mott-insulator is crucial for understanding its apparent time-reversal symmetry breaking Josephson diode effect. Moreover, the momentum-resolved signature employed here could be used to detect quantum phase transition between band- and Mott-insulating phases in van der Waals heterostructures, where interlayer interactions and correlations can be easily tuned to drive such transition., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), a partial thickness corneal transplant surgery aimed at replacing the anterior part of cornea above Descemet membrane (DM), would greatly benefit from an autonomous surgical approach as it highly relies on surgeon skill with high perforation rates. In this study, we proposed a novel autonomous surgical robotic system (AUTO-DALK) based on a customized neural network capable of precise needle control and consistent big bubble demarcation on cadaver and live rabbit models. We demonstrate the feasibility of an AI-based image-guided vertical drilling approach for big bubble generation, in contrast to the conventional horizontal needle approach. Our system integrates an optical coherence tomography (OCT) fiber optic distal sensor into the eye-mountable micro robotic system, which automatically segments OCT M-mode depth signals to identify corneal layers using a custom deep learning algorithm. It enables the robot to autonomously guide the needle to targeted tissue layers via a depth-controlled feedback loop. We compared autonomous needle insertion performance and resulting pneumo-dissection using AUTO-DALK against 1) freehand insertion, 2) OCT sensor guided manual insertion, and 3) teleoperated robotic insertion, reporting significant improvements in insertion depth, pneumo-dissection depth, task completion time, and big bubble formation. Ex vivo and in vivo results indicate that the AI-driven, AUTO-DALK system, is a promising solution to standardize pneumo-dissection outcomes for partial thickness keratoplasty.

Abstract: Vascular anastomosis, the surgical connection of blood vessels, is essential in procedures such as organ transplants and reconstructive surgeries. The precision required limits accessibility due to the extensive training needed, with manual suturing leading to variable outcomes and revision rates up to 7.9%. Existing robotic systems, while promising, are either fully teleoperated or lack the capabilities necessary for autonomous vascular anastomosis. We present the Micro Smart Tissue Autonomous Robot (micro-STAR), an autonomous robotic system designed to perform vascular anastomosis on small-diameter vessels. The micro-STAR system integrates a novel suturing tool equipped with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) fiber-optic sensor and a microcamera, enabling real-time tissue detection and classification. Our system autonomously places sutures and manipulates tissue with minimal human intervention. In an ex vivo study, micro-STAR achieved outcomes competitive with experienced surgeons in terms of leak pressure, lumen reduction, and suture placement variation, completing 90% of sutures without human intervention. Abstract: Accurate sleep stage classification is crucial for diagnosing sleep disorders and evaluating sleep quality. While polysomnography (PSG) remains the gold standard, photoplethysmography (PPG) is more practical due to its affordability and widespread use in wearable devices. However, state-of-the-art sleep staging methods often require prolonged continuous signal acquisition, making them impractical for wearable devices due to high energy consumption. Shorter signal acquisitions are more feasible but less accurate. Our work proposes an adapted sleep staging model based on top-performing state-of-the-art methods and evaluates its performance with different PPG segment sizes. We concatenate 30-second PPG segments over 15-minute intervals to leverage longer segment contexts. This approach achieved an accuracy of 0.75, a Cohen's Kappa of 0.60, an F1-Weighted score of 0.74, and an F1-Macro score of 0.60. Abstract: Timely disease diagnosis is challenging due to increasing disease burdens and limited clinician availability. AI shows promise in diagnosis accuracy but faces real-world application issues due to insufficient validation in clinical workflows and diverse populations. This study addresses gaps in medical AI downstream accountability through a case study on age-related macular degeneration (AMD) diagnosis and severity classification. We designed and implemented an AI-assisted diagnostic workflow for AMD, comparing diagnostic performance with and without AI assistance among 24 clinicians from 12 institutions with real patient data sampled from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS). Additionally, we demonstrated continual enhancement of an existing AI model by incorporating approximately 40,000 additional medical images (named AREDS2 dataset). The improved model was then systematically evaluated using both AREDS and AREDS2 test sets, as well as an external test set from Singapore. AI assistance markedly enhanced diagnostic accuracy and classification for 23 out of 24 clinicians, with the average F1-score increasing by 20% from 37.71 (Manual) to 45.52 (Manual + AI) (P-value < 0.0001), achieving an improvement of over 50% in some cases. In terms of efficiency, AI assistance reduced diagnostic times for 17 out of the 19 clinicians tracked, with time savings of up to 40%. Furthermore, a model equipped with continual learning showed robust performance across three independent datasets, recording a 29% increase in accuracy, and elevating the F1-score from 42 to 54 in the Singapore population.

Abstract: This paper presents the first search for dark matter axions with mass in the ranges 76.56 to 76.82 $\mu$eV and 79.31 to 79.53 $\mu$eV using a prototype setup for the MAgnetized Disk and Mirror Axion eXperiment (MADMAX). The experimental setup employs a dielectric haloscope consisting of three sapphire disks and a mirror to resonantly enhance the axion-induced microwave signal within the magnetic dipole field provided by the 1.6 T Morpurgo magnet at CERN. Over 14.5 days of data collection, no axion signal was detected. A 95% CL upper limit on the axion-photon coupling strength down to $|g_{a\gamma}| \sim 2 \times 10^{-11} \mathrm{GeV}^{-1}$ is set in the targeted mass ranges, surpassing previous constraints, assuming a local axion dark matter density $\rho_{a}$ of $0.3~\mathrm{GeV}/\mathrm{cm}^3$. This study marks the first axion dark matter search using a dielectric haloscope.

Abstract: The generation of entangled photons from radiative cascades has enabled milestone experiments in quantum information science with several applications in photonic quantum technologies. Significant efforts are being devoted to pushing the performances of near-deterministic entangled-photon sources based on single quantum emitters often embedded in photonic cavities, so to boost the flux of photon pairs. The general postulate is that the emitter generates photons in a nearly maximally entangled state of polarization, ready for application purposes. Here, we demonstrate that this assumption is unjustified. We show that in radiative cascades there exists an interplay between photon polarization and emission wavevector, strongly affecting quantum correlations when emitters are embedded in micro-cavities. We discuss how the polarization entanglement of photon pairs from a biexciton-exciton cascade in quantum dots strongly depends on their propagation wavevector, and it can even vanish for large emission angles. Our experimental results, backed by theoretical modelling, yield a brand-new understanding of cascaded emission for various quantum emitters. In addition, our model provides quantitative guidelines for designing optical microcavities that retain both a high degree of entanglement and collection efficiency, moving the community one step further towards an ideal source of entangled photons for quantum technologies.

Abstract: Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 years of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the Observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above $4\,$EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in right ascension above $8\,$EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the $8$ to $16\,$EeV energy bin is now also above the $5\sigma$ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above $8\,$EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of $0.3\%$ per year at the $95\%$ confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to $0.03\,$EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Abstract: We report the first result from a dark photon dark matter search in the mass range from ${78.62}$ to $83.95~\mathrm{\mu eV}/c^2$ with a dielectric haloscope prototype for MADMAX (Magnetized Disc and Mirror Axion eXperiment). Putative dark photons would convert to observable photons within a stack consisting of three sapphire disks and a mirror. The emitted power of this system is received by an antenna and successively digitized using a low-noise receiver. No dark photon signal has been observed. Assuming unpolarized dark photon dark matter with a local density of $\rho_{\chi}=0.3~\mathrm{GeV/cm^3}$ we exclude a dark photon to photon mixing parameter $\chi > 3.0 \times 10^{-12}$ over the full mass range and $\chi > 1.2 \times 10^{-13}$ at a mass of $80.57~\mathrm{\mu eV}/c^2$ with a 95\% confidence level. 20. Finite time blow up for the energy critical Zakharov system II: exact solutions

Abstract: Based on our companion paper [Krieger-Schmid, 2024], we show that the 4D energy critical Zakharov system admits finite time type II blow up solutions. The main new difficulty this work deals with is the appearance of a term in the linearization around the approximate solution, which is non-local with respect to both space and time. In particular this cannot be handled by straightforward adaptation of the methods developed in [Krieger-Schlag-Tataru, 2008/09]. The key new ingredients we use are a type of approximate modulation theory, taking advantage of frequency localisations, and the exploitation of an inhomogeneous wave equation with both a non-local, as well as a local potential term. These terms arise for the main non-perturbative component of the ion density $n$ and can be solved via inversion of a certain Fredholm type operator, as well as by using distorted Fourier methods. However, the da Vinci system presents unique challenges which hinder straight-forward implementation of imitation learning. Notably, its forward kinematics is inconsistent due to imprecise joint measurements, and naively training a policy using such approximate kinematics data often leads to task failure. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a relative action formulation which enables successful policy training and deployment using its approximate kinematics data. A promising outcome of this approach is that the large repository of clinical data, which contains approximate kinematics, may be directly utilized for robot learning without further corrections. Abstract: MADMAX, a future experiment to search for axion dark matter, is based on a novel detection concept called the dielectric haloscope. It consists of a booster composed of several dielectric disks positioned with $\mu$m precision. A prototype composed of one movable disk was built to demonstrate the mechanical feasibility of such a booster in the challenging environment of the experiment: high magnetic field to convert the axions into photons and cryogenic temperature to reduce the thermal noise. It was tested both inside a strong magnetic field up to 1.6 T and at cryogenic temperatures down to 35K. The measurements of the velocity and positioning accuracy of the disk are shown and are found to match the MADMAX requirements., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays are known to be mainly of extragalactic origin, and their propagation is limited by energy losses, so their arrival directions are expected to correlate with the large-scale structure of the local Universe. In this work, we investigate the possible presence of intermediate-scale excesses in the flux of the most energetic cosmic rays from the direction of the supergalactic plane region using events with energies above 20 EeV recorded with the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory up to 31 December 2022, with a total exposure of 135,000 km^2 sr yr. The strongest indication for an excess that we find, with a post-trial significance of 3.1{\sigma}, is in the Centaurus region, as in our previous reports, and it extends down to lower energies than previously studied. We do not find any strong hints of excesses from any other region of the supergalactic plane at the same angular scale. In particular, our results do not confirm the reports by the Telescope Array collaboration of excesses from two regions in the Northern Hemisphere at the edge of the field of view of the Pierre Auger Observatory. 25. UAV Formation and Resource Allocation Optimization for Communication-Assisted 3D InSAR Sensing

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate joint unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) formation and resource allocation optimization for communication-assisted three-dimensional (3D) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensing. We consider a system consisting of two UAVs that perform bistatic interferometric SAR (InSAR) sensing for generation of a digital elevation model (DEM) and transmit the radar raw data to a ground station (GS) in real time. To account for practical 3D sensing requirements, we use non-conventional sensing performance metrics, such as the SAR interferometric coherence, i.e., the local cross-correlation between the two co-registered UAV SAR images, the point-to-point InSAR relative height error, and the height of ambiguity, which together characterize the accuracy with which the InSAR system can determine the height of ground targets. Our objective is to jointly optimize the UAV formation, speed, and communication power allocation for maximization of the InSAR coverage while satisfying energy, communication, and InSAR-specific sensing constraints. To solve the formulated non-smooth and non-convex optimization problem, we divide it into three sub-problems and propose a novel alternating optimization (AO) framework that is based on classical, monotonic, and stochastic optimization techniques. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is validated through extensive simulations and compared to several benchmark schemes. Furthermore, our simulation results highlight the impact of the UAV-GS communication link on the flying formation and sensing performance and show that the DEM of a large area of interest can be mapped and offloaded to ground successfully, while the ground topography can be estimated with centimeter-scale precision. Lastly, we demonstrate that a low UAV velocity is preferable for InSAR applications as it leads to better sensing accuracy.

Abstract: In addition to mitochondrial DNA, mitochondrial double-stranded RNA (mtdsRNA) is exported from mitochondria. However, specific channels for RNA transport have not been demonstrated. Here, we begin to characterize channel candidates for mtdsRNA export from the mitochondrial matrix to the cytosol. Down-regulation of SUV3 resulted in the accumulation of mtdsRNAs in the matrix, whereas down-regulation of PNPase resulted in the export of mtdsRNAs to the cytosol. Targeting experiments show that PNPase functions in both the intermembrane space and matrix. Strand-specific sequencing of the double-stranded RNA confirms the mitochondrial origin. Inhibiting or down-regulating outer membrane proteins VDAC1/2 and BAK/BAX or inner membrane proteins PHB1/2 strongly attenuated the export of mtdsRNAs to the cytosol. The cytosolic mtdsRNAs subsequently localized to large granules containing the stress protein TIA-1 and activated the type 1 interferon stress response pathway. Abundant mtdsRNAs were detected in a subset of non-small-cell lung cancer cell lines that were glycolytic, indicating relevance in cancer biology. Thus, we propose that mtdsRNA is a new damage-associated molecular pattern that is exported from mitochondria in a regulated manner.

28. Comparing ventriculoatrial and ventriculopleural shunts in pediatric hydrocephalus: a Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network study.

Abstract: ObjectiveWhen the peritoneal cavity cannot serve as the distal shunt terminus, nonperitoneal shunts, typically terminating in the atrium or pleural space, are used. The comparative effectiveness of these two terminus options has not been evaluated. The authors directly compared shunt survival and complication rates for ventriculoatrial (VA) and ventriculopleural (VPl) shunts in a pediatric cohort.MethodsThe Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network Core Data Project was used to identify children ≤ 18 years of age who underwent either VA or VPl shunt insertion. The primary outcome was time to shunt failure. Secondary outcomes included distal site complications and frequency of shunt failure at 6, 12, and 24 months.ResultsThe search criteria yielded 416 children from 14 centers with either a VA (n = 318) or VPl (n = 98) shunt, including those converted from ventriculoperitoneal shunts. Children with VA shunts had a lower median age at insertion (6.1 years vs 12.4 years, p < 0.001). Among those children with VA shunts, a hydrocephalus etiology of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) secondary to prematurity comprised a higher proportion (47.0% vs 31.2%) and myelomeningocele comprised a lower proportion (17.8% vs 27.3%) (p = 0.024) compared with those with VPl shunts. At 24 months, there was a higher cumulative number of revisions for VA shunts (48.6% vs 38.9%, p = 0.038). When stratified by patient age at shunt insertion, VA shunts in children < 6 years had the lowest shunt survival rate (p < 0.001, log-rank test). After controlling for age and etiology, multivariable analysis did not find that shunt type (VA vs VPl) was predictive of time to shunt failure. No differences were found in the cumulative frequency of complications (VA 6.0% vs VPl 9.2%, p = 0.257), but there was a higher rate of pneumothorax in the VPl cohort (3.1% vs 0%, p = 0.013).ConclusionsShunt survival was similar between VA and VPl shunts, although VA shunts are used more often, particularly in younger patients. Children < 6 years with VA shunts appeared to have the shortest shunt survival, which may be a result of the VA group having more cases of IVH secondary to prematurity; however, when age and etiology were included in a multivariable model, shunt location (atrium vs pleural space) was not associated with time to failure. The baseline differences between children treated with a VA versus a VPl shunt likely explain current practice patterns.

Abstract: Hypothetical axions provide a compelling explanation for dark matter and could be emitted from the hot solar interior. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) has been searching for solar axions via their back conversion to X-ray photons in a 9-T 10-m long magnet directed towards the Sun. We report on an extended run with the IAXO (International Axion Observatory) pathfinder detector, doubling the previous exposure time. The detector was operated with a xenon-based gas mixture for part of the new run, providing technical insights for future detector configurations in IAXO. No counts are detected in the 95% signal-encircling region during the new run, while 0.75 are expected. The new data improve the axion-photon coupling limit to 5.8$\times 10^{-11}\,$GeV$^{-1}$ at 95% C.L. Abstract: We use Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) to compare the doping dependence of magnetic excitations of an Infinite-Layer nickelate to those of a prototypical superconducting cuprate. The polarization analysis of RIXS spectra establishes the dominant spin-flip nature of the mid-infrared peak in both cases. Hole doping leads to opposite behavior of the magnetic energy in the two materials. By fitting the data with an original Hubbard-based model for dynamic susceptibility, we find that t is comparable in the two materials while U is about twice larger in the nickelate. This finding accounts for the smaller magnetic bandwidth of nickelates and for its decrease upon doping., Comment: 7 pages with bibliography, 4 figures

Abstract: The Pierre Auger Observatory is the most sensitive instrument to detect photons with energies above $10^{17}$ eV. It measures extensive air showers generated by ultra high energy cosmic rays using a hybrid technique that exploits the combination of a fluorescence detector with a ground array of particle detectors. The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth of the shower maximum ($X_{max}$) and a steeper lateral distribution function, along with a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced cascades. In this work, a new analysis technique in the energy interval between 1 and 30 EeV (1 EeV = $10^{18}$ eV) has been developed by combining the fluorescence detector-based measurement of $X_{max}$ with the specific features of the surface detector signal through a parameter related to the air shower muon content, derived from the universality of the air shower development. No evidence of a statistically significant signal due to photon primaries was found using data collected in about 12 years of operation. Thus, upper bounds to the integral photon flux have been set using a detailed calculation of the detector exposure, in combination with a data-driven background estimation. The derived 95% confidence level upper limits are 0.0403, 0.01113, 0.0035, 0.0023, and 0.0021 km$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ above 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10 EeV, respectively, leading to the most stringent upper limits on the photon flux in the EeV range. Compared with past results, the upper limits were improved by about 40% for the lowest energy threshold and by a factor 3 above 3 EeV, where no candidates were found and the expected background is negligible. The presented limits can be used to probe the assumptions on chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and allow for the constraint of the mass and lifetime phase space of super-heavy dark matter particles., Comment: 19 pages, 22 figures

Abstract: We report an investigation of the mass composition of cosmic rays with energies from 3 to 100 EeV (1 EeV=$10^{18}$ eV) using the distributions of the depth of shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$. The analysis relies on ${\sim}50,000$ events recorded by the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory and a deep-learning-based reconstruction algorithm. Above energies of 5 EeV, the data set offers a 10-fold increase in statistics with respect to fluorescence measurements at the Observatory. After cross-calibration using the Fluorescence Detector, this enables the first measurement of the evolution of the mean and the standard deviation of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to 100 EeV. Our findings are threefold: (1.) The evolution of the mean logarithmic mass towards a heavier composition with increasing energy can be confirmed and is extended to 100 EeV. (2.) The evolution of the fluctuations of $X_\mathrm{max}$ towards a heavier and purer composition with increasing energy can be confirmed with high statistics. We report a rather heavy composition and small fluctuations in $X_\mathrm{max}$ at the highest energies. (3.) We find indications for a characteristic structure beyond a constant change in the mean logarithmic mass, featuring three breaks that are observed in proximity to the ankle, instep, and suppression features in the energy spectrum., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract: We present measurements of the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum $X_\mathrm{max}$, inferred for the first time on an event-by-event level using the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Using deep learning, we were able to extend measurements of the $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions up to energies of 100 EeV ($10^{20}$ eV), not yet revealed by current measurements, providing new insights into the mass composition of cosmic rays at extreme energies. Gaining a 10-fold increase in statistics compared to the Fluorescence Detector data, we find evidence that the rate of change of the average $X_\mathrm{max}$ with the logarithm of energy features three breaks at $6.5\pm0.6~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, $11\pm 2~(\mathrm{stat})\pm1~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, and $31\pm5~(\mathrm{stat})\pm3~(\mathrm{sys})$ EeV, in the vicinity to the three prominent features (ankle, instep, suppression) of the cosmic-ray flux. The energy evolution of the mean and standard deviation of the measured $X_\mathrm{max}$ distributions indicates that the mass composition becomes increasingly heavier and purer, thus being incompatible with a large fraction of light nuclei between 50 EeV and 100 EeV., Comment: submitted to Phys. Abstract: It has been previously advocated that the presence of the daily and annual modulations of the axion flux on the Earth's surface may dramatically change the strategy of the axion searches. The arguments were based on the so-called Axion Quark Nugget (AQN) dark matter model which was originally put forward to explain the similarity of the dark and visible cosmological matter densities $\Omega_{\rm dark}\sim \Omega_{\rm visible}$. In this framework, the population of galactic axions with mass $ 10^{-6} {\rm eV}\lesssim m_a\lesssim 10^{-3}{\rm eV}$ and velocity $\langle v_a\rangle\sim 10^{-3} c$ will be accompanied by axions with typical velocities $\langle v_a\rangle\sim 0.6 c$ emitted by AQNs. Furthermore, in this framework, it has also been argued that the AQN-induced axion daily modulation (in contrast with the conventional WIMP paradigm) could be as large as $(10-20)\%$, which represents the main motivation for the present investigation. We argue that the daily modulations along with the broadband detection strategy can be very useful tools for the discovery of such relativistic axions. The data from the CAST-CAPP detector have been used following such arguments. Unfortunately, due to the dependence of the amplifier chain on temperature-dependent gain drifts and other factors, we could not conclusively show the presence or absence of a dark sector-originated daily modulation. Abstract: When annealing a 4H silicon carbide (SiC) crystal, a sequence of optically active defect centers occurs among which the TS center is a prominent example. Here, we present low-temperature photoluminescence analyses on the single defect level. They reveal that the three occurring spectral signatures TS1, TS2 and TS3 originate from one single defect. Their polarization dependences expose three different crystallographic orientations in the basal plane, which relate to the projections of the nearest neighbor directions. Accordingly, we find a three-fold level-splitting in ensemble studies, when applying mechanical strain. This dependency is quantitatively calibrated. A complementary electrical measurement, deep level transient spectroscopy, reveals a charge transition level of the TS defect at 0.6 eV above the valence band. Abstract: Hypertension, a leading contributor to cardiovascular morbidity, underscores the need for accurate and continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring. Photoplethysmography (PPG) presents a promising approach to this end. However, the precision of BP estimates derived from PPG signals has been the subject of ongoing debate, necessitating a comprehensive evaluation of their effectiveness and constraints. We developed a calibration-based Siamese ResNet model for BP estimation, using a signal input paired with a reference BP reading. We compared the use of normalized PPG (N-PPG) against the normalized Invasive Arterial Blood Pressure (N-IABP) signals as input. The N-IABP signals do not directly present systolic and diastolic values but theoretically provide a more accurate BP measure than PPG signals since it is a direct pressure sensor inside the body. Our strategy establishes a critical benchmark for PPG performance, realistically calibrating expectations for PPG's BP estimation capabilities. Nonetheless, we compared the performance of our models using different signal-filtering conditions to evaluate the impact of filtering on the results. We evaluated our method using the AAMI and the BHS standards employing the VitalDB dataset. The N-IABP signals meet with AAMI standards for both Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) and Diastolic Blood Pressure (DBP), with errors of 1.29+-6.33mmHg for systolic pressure and 1.17+-5.78mmHg for systolic and diastolic pressure respectively for the raw N-IABP signal. In contrast, N-PPG signals, in their best setup, exhibited inferior performance than N-IABP, presenting 1.49+-11.82mmHg and 0.89+-7.27mmHg for systolic and diastolic pressure respectively. Our findings highlight the potential and limitations of employing PPG for BP estimation, showing that these signals contain information correlated to BP but may not be sufficient for predicting it accurately., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: The flux of ultra-high energy cosmic rays reaching Earth above the ankle energy (5 EeV) can be described as a mixture of nuclei injected by extragalactic sources with very hard spectra and a low rigidity cutoff. Extragalactic magnetic fields existing between the Earth and the closest sources can affect the observed CR spectrum by reducing the flux of low-rigidity particles reaching Earth. We perform a combined fit of the spectrum and distributions of depth of shower maximum measured with the Pierre Auger Observatory including the effect of this magnetic horizon in the propagation of UHECRs in the intergalactic space. We find that, within a specific range of the various experimental and phenomenological systematics, the magnetic horizon effect can be relevant for turbulent magnetic field strengths in the local neighbourhood of order $B_{\rm rms}\simeq (50-100)\,{\rm nG}\,(20\rm{Mpc}/{d_{\rm s})( 100\,\rm{kpc}/L_{\rm coh}})^{1/2}$, with $d_{\rm s}$ the typical intersource separation and $L_{\rm coh}$ the magnetic field coherence length. When this is the case, the inferred slope of the source spectrum becomes softer and can be closer to the expectations of diffusive shock acceleration, i.e., $\propto E^{-2}$. An additional cosmic-ray population with higher source density and softer spectra, presumably also extragalactic and dominating the cosmic-ray flux at EeV energies, is also required to reproduce the overall spectrum and composition results for all energies down to 0.6~EeV., Comment: Matches published version

Abstract: We report an experimental study of the magnetic properties of infinite-layer Nd1-xSrxNiO2 thin films by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Ni L3,2 and Nd M5,4 edges. We show that at low temperatures the out-of-plane component of the Ni1+ spin-moment is characterized by a rapid increase for magnetic fields below 1T , followed by a slower linear increase reaching a spin-moment value of 0.25uB/Ni at 9T in the case of superconducting Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2. On the other hand, the Nd M5,4 XMCD shows a clear paramagnetic behaviour, which make both Ni- and Nd-spin-sublattices fully uncorrelated.The magnetic field and temperature dependencies of the Ni L3,2 XMCD data can be explained by assuming an out-of-plane canting of the strongly in-plane anti-ferromagnetic ordered Ni1+ spins. A symmetry lowering of the NiO2 planes observed via four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy, triggering a DMI, can be responsible of the proposed Ni1+ spin-canting at zero-field. The resulting out-of-plane weak-ferromagnetic coupling under magnetic field explains the relatively large spin-moment and its magnetic field and temperature dependence.
