Abstract

The fragmentation of the quasi-projectile is studied with the INDRA multidetector for different colliding systems and incident energies in the Fermi energy range. Different experimental observations show that a large part of the fragmentation is not compatible with the statistical fragmentation of a fully equilibrated nucleus. The study of internal correlations is a powerful tool, especially to evidence entrance channel effects. Abstract

A previous analysis of the charge (Z) correlations in the $\Delta Z-$ plane for Xe+Sn central collisions at 32 MeV/u has shown an enhancement in the production of equally sized fragments (low $\Delta Z$) which was interpreted as an evidence for spinodal decomposition. However the signal is weak and rises the question of the estimation of the uncorrelated yield. After a critical analysis of its robustness, we propose in this paper a new technique to build the uncorrelated yield in the charge correlation function. The application of this method to Xe+Sn central collision data at 32, 39, 45 and 50 MeV/u does not show any particular enhancement of the correlation function in any $\Delta Z$ bin., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, revised version with an added figure and minor changes. 4. Multifragmentation in central collisions at intermediate energies: a fast process?

Abstract

The kinematical characteristics of fragments and light particles observed in central highly fragmented nuclear collisions at intermediate energies are compared with the results of a model assuming that the initial momentum distribution of the nucleons inside the two partners of the reaction has no time to relax before the disassembly of the system. Abstract

Recently a renewed interest in photonuclear reactions has appeared. It is motivated by a number of different applications where progress in reliable and, in some cases, very high-intensity electron accelerators was awaited. In particular, today's interest is linked to the nuclear material interrogation and non-destructive nuclear waste characterization, both based either on prompt neutron, or delayed neutron, or delayed gamma detection following photofission. The knowledge of photonuclear reactions is also extremely important in the design of electron accelerators used for medical applications, nuclear physics, photoneutron sources, radioactive ion beam production, etc. In this paper we present the photonuclear activation file (PAF) under development to be included into any material depletion code. By now the PAF contains the photonuclear cross-sections for more than 600 isotopes, fission fragment distributions and delayed neutron evaluations for most of the actinides in the photon energy range from 0 up to 25 MeV. Theoretical predictions, evaluated data files and available experimental data were used to construct the PAF, and some benchmarks are in progress to ensure its quality. The release of the first version of PAF is planned in 2006.

Abstract

Experimental results for the photofission of 238U with an endpoint Bremsstrahlung emission of 15 MeV are presented. Absolute yield and time characteristics of the delayed neutrons are extracted. In parallel, calculations for fission fragment distributions and corresponding delayed neutron parameters are given and compared to data.

International audience; In the framework of the SPIRAL2 project atGANIL, the Super-Separator-Spectrometer (S3) is dedicatedto experiments using the very high intensity stablebeams ([10 plA) delivered by the superconducting linearaccelerator up to 14.5 A.MeV. Specific target stations arerequired to sustain these unprecedented beam intensities. Aprototype target station for actinides was designed andmanufactured, which main characteristics are described inthis paper. In order to commission this system and checkthe behavior of target materials, preliminary tests with 7.7A.MeV 129Xe beams were performed at 100 pnA. Theresults of these tests are presented here.

Abstract

Hemispherical micro-lenses have been fabricated using a single-mode optical fibre end. The process consists of a new two-step fabrication using only a continuous CO2 laser source. In the first step, the fibre is heated with the laser and stretched until it splits, resulting in two symmetrical tapers. In the second step, the micro-lens is formed by melting the rotating fibre tip. Parameters of heating and stretching are optimized to ensure reproducibility. Characterizations have been performed and confirm the assumed Gaussian beam profile. We performed the focal length and beam waist measurements and compared them with theoretical approximations. We showed the flexibility of the fabrication process and the interest of micro-lenses in several applications.

Abstract

Impact of adopting products promoted by the Consortium for Improving Agriculture-based livelihoods in Central Africa (CIALCA) on food and nutrition security was tested. Multi-stage sampling was used to select 7 project mandate areas, 5 villages/mandate area (stratified into action, satellite and control sites) and 913 households. Structured questionnaires were administered; analysis of impact based on comparison between stratums, differences in means tested by ANOVA and significance of difference obtained by Tukey's HSD multiple rank tests. Perception of adequate food sufficiency received a higher rating in action and satellite sites compared to control sites reason being improved agricultural technologies. For >60% of households, worsened food security was due to climatic conditions. Although a higher proportion of households in action and satellite was meeting calorie RDIs in DRC and Burundi the difference was insignificant from control sites. 53% of respondents in control sites indicated a decrease in intake of protein rich foods, this was significantly higher than the proportion in the action (46%) and satellite (41%) sites., {"references":["FAO, \"Household food security and community nutrition,\" Nutrition \nand consumer protection. Abstract

In this article, we present our experience with a new technique for medial soft tissue balancing, where we make multiple punctures in the medial collateral ligament (MCL) using a 19-gauge needle, to progressively stretch the MCL until a correct ligament balance is achieved. Ligament status was evaluated both before and after the procedure using computer navigation and mediolateral stress testing. The procedure was considered successful when 2 to 4-mm mediolateral joint line opening was obtained in extension and 2 to 6 mm in flexion. In 34 of 35 cases, a progressive correction of medial tightness was achieved according to the above described criteria. One case was considered overreleased in extension. Needle puncturing is a new, effective, and safe technique for progressive correction of MCL tightness in the varus knee.

Abstract

Design and decommissioning of large-scale nuclear facilities is nowadays a high-interest activity for the nuclear community. Nuclear data have an important role in R&D studies for accelerator-based applications and decommissioning of nuclear facilities including nuclear reactors. Most of these studies use simulations to predict activity levels and dose rates, to design shielding components, etc. The different data libraries and/or reaction models included in the transport codes are essential for these calculations. In this contribution we present several examples of the nuclear data usage for this type of applications. We show the importance of a correct use of nuclear data and reaction models for the accuracy of the results obtained by simulations. Installations able to provide high intensity radioactive beams (SPIRAL2, EURISOL...) are subject of sustained R&D ef- forts. There are also an important number of small cyclotrons, most of them dedicated to medical applications, with specific needs in terms of R&D studies. Decommissioning of nuclear facilities also needs dedicated activity studies. In this work we present two different examples: R&D studies for accelerator- based applications and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. Both examples clearly show the role played by nuclear data and their employment in reaction codes for the accuracy of the results obtained by simulations.

Abstract

Photons with energies above 6 MeV can be used to detect small amounts of nuclear material inside large cargo containers. The method consists in using an intense beam of high-energy photons (bremsstrahlung radiation) in order to induce reactions of photofission on actinides. The measurement of delayed neutrons and delayed gammas emitted by fission products brings specific information on localization and quantification of the nuclear material. A simultaneous measurement of both of these delayed signals can overcome some important limitations due to matrix effects like heavy shielding and/or the presence of light elements as hydrogen. We have a long experience in the field of nuclear waste package characterization by photon interrogation and we have demonstrated that presently the detection limit can be less than one gram of actinide per ton of package. Recently we tried to extend our knowledge to assess the performance of this method for the detection of special nuclear materials in sea and air freights. This paper presents our first results based on experimental measurements carried out in the SAPHIR facility, which houses a linear electron accelerator with the energy range from 15 MeV to 30 MeV. Our experiments were also modeled using the full scale Monte Carlo techniques. In addition, and in a more general frame, due to the lack of consistent data on photonuclear reactions, we have been working on the development of a new photonuclear activation file (PAF), which includes cross sections for more than 600 isotopes including photofission fragment distributions and delayed neutron tables for actinides. Therefore, this work includes also some experimental results obtained at the ELSA electron accelerator, which is more adapted for precise basic nuclear data measurements.

Abstract

A consecutive series of 115 cementless Profix (Smith and Nephew, Memphis, USA) Total Knee Arthroplasties performed in 113 patients were followed in order to determine the functional results and survivorship at 8 to 10 years. All patients were included in a prospective database and were reviewed annually until final follow-up. Patients overall satisfaction was excellent or good in 91.3% of cases. The mean Knee Society's knee and function scores increased respectively from 49.3 and 36.7 preoperatively to 93.1 and 82.2 postoperatively. The Kaplan–Meier estimate of implant survival at 10 years was 97.1%. Two patients underwent revision and were considered as failures. One patient had a fracture of the medial condyle at 4 days post-surgery, and the other was revised for aseptic loosening of the tibial component at 6 years post-surgery. On the basis of this long-term follow-up study, we can conclude that the Profix Total Knee System is effective and safe.

Abstract

The next generation spallation neutron sources, neutrino factories or RIB production facilities currently being designed and constructed world wide will increase the average proton beam power on target by a few orders of magnitude. Increased proton beam power results in target thermal hydraulic issues leading to new target designs, very often based on liquid metal technologies such as Hg, Pb, or PbBi. Radioactive nuclides produced in liquid metal targets are transported into hot cells, into pumps or close to electronics with radiation sensitive components. Besides the considerable amount of photon activity in the irradiated liquid metal, a significant amount of the Delayed Neutron (DN) precursor activity can be accumulated in the target fluid. The transit time from the front of a liquid metal target into areas, where DNs may be important, can be as short as a few seconds, i.e. well within one half‐life of many DN precursors. Therefore, it seems very important to evaluate the DN flux as a function of position and determine if DNs may contribute significantly to the activation and dose rates. The multi‐particle transport code MCNPX combined with the material evolution program CINDER’90 is used to predict the DN precursors and construct the DN tables. These DN tables are employed within the generalized geometrical model of the MegaPie spallation target at PSI (Switzerland). We show that the contribution of DNs and prompt spallation neutrons to the total neutron flux is comparable at the very top of the liquid PbBi loop. We also demonstrate that these estimates of DNs within MCNPX are very much model‐dependent. No experimental data are available for DN yields and time spectra from high energy fission‐spallation reactions. An experiment to perform these measurements is proposed.

Abstract

This article presents calculations of photonuclear reaction cross sections for actinides by using different reaction codes, namely an improved version of HMS‐ALICE and GNASH. The GDR parameters from the RIPL2 data library are used to describe the total photo‐absorption cross section. In general, our results show satisfactory agreement with experimental data and IAEA evaluations. We plan to include our GNASH evaluations for 235U, 238U, 237Np, 239Pu, 240Pu and 241Am into a new release of the ENDF‐B/VII data files.

Fission fragment distributions and delayed neutron yields for 235U and 238U are provided by a complete modelization of the photofission process below 25 MeV. The absorption cross‐section parameterization and the fission fragment distributions are given and compared to experimental data. The delayed neutron yields and the half‐lives in terms of six groups are presented and compared to data obtained with a bremsstrahlung spectrum of 15 MeV.

A previous analysis of the charge (Z) correlations in the $\Delta Z-$ plane for Xe+Sn central collisions at 32 MeV/u has shown an enhancement in the production of equally sized fragments (low $\Delta Z$) which was interpreted as an evidence for spinodal decomposition. However the signal is weak and rises the question of the estimation of the uncorrelated yield. After a critical analysis of its robustness, we propose in this paper a new technique to build the uncorrelated yield in the charge correlation function. The application of this method to Xe+Sn central collision data at 32, 39, 45 and 50 MeV/u does not show any particular enhancement of the correlation function in any $\Delta Z$ bin., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures, revised version with an added figure and minor changes. Abstract

This thesis is about the study of nuclear reactions at intermediate energies. A dedicated phenomenological model has been developed and compared with experimental data collected within the INDRA collaboration. The model is detailed in the first part of the work. Largely based on experimental facts, it uses geometrical assumptions by considering both the degrees of freedom of the nucleons and of the nuclei. In a second part, the assumptions of the model are tested and validated. After a presentation of the phase space explored during the reaction, a global comparison between the model and the experiment is performed for the system Xe + Sn from 25 to 80 MeV/u bombarding energy. Before concluding, two specific studies, one dedicated to central collisions and the other to the decay modes of the quasi-projectile in peripheral reactions are presented., Ce mémoire concerne l'étude des réactions nucléaires aux énergies intermédiaires. Un modèle phénoménologique a été élaboré et validé à l'aide des données recueillies avec le multidétecteur INDRA. Le modèle est décrit dans la première partie de la thèse. Largement inspiré de l'observation expérimentale, il est basé sur des hypothèses géométriques en considérant conjointement les degrés de liberté des nucléons et des noyaux. La deuxième partie teste et valide ces hypothèses. Après une présentation de l'espace des phases exploré lors de la collision, une comparaison globale entre le modèle et l'expérience sur le système Xe + Sn de 25 à 80 MeV/u est présentée. Avant de conclure, deux études spécifiques, une dédiée aux collisions centrales et l'autre aux modes de décroissance du quasi-projectile dans les collisions périphériques sont détaillées.

The predictions of an event generator, HIPSE (Heavy-Ion Phase-Space Exploration), dedi- cated to the description of nuclear collisions in the intermediate energy range, are compared with experimental data collected by the INDRA and INDRA-ALADIN collaborations. Abstract

Characteristics of the primary fragments produced in central collisions of ${}^{129}\mathrm{Xe}{+}^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Sn}$ from 32 to 50 A MeV have been obtained. By using the correlation technique for the relative velocity between light charged particles (LCP) and fragments, we were able to extract the multiplicities and average kinetic energy of secondary evaporated LCP. We then reconstructed the size and excitation energy of the primary fragments. For each bombarding energy a constant value of the excitation energy per nucleon over the whole range of fragment charge has been found. This value saturates at 3A MeV for beam energies 39A MeV and above. The corresponding secondary evaporated LCP represent less than 40% of all produced particles and decreases down to 23% for 50A MeV. The experimental characteristics of the primary fragments are compared to the predictions of statistical multifragmentation model (SMM) calculations. Reasonable agreement between the data and the calculation has been found for any given incident energy. However SMM fails to reproduce the trend of the excitation function of the primary fragment excitation energy and the amount of secondary evaporated LCP's.

Abstract

The fragmentation of the quasi-projectile is studied with the INDRA multidetector for different colliding systems and incident energies in the Fermi energy range. Different experimental observations show that a large part of the fragmentation is not compatible with the statistical fragmentation of a fully equilibrated nucleus. The study of internal correlations is a powerful tool, especially to evidence entrance channel effects. Abstract

The influence of the entrance channel asymmetry upon the fragmentation process is addressed by studying heavy-ion induced reactions around the Fermi energy. The data have been recorded with the INDRA 4pi array. An event selection method called the Principal Component Analysis is presented and discussed. It is applied for the selection of central events and furthermore to multifragmentation of single source events. The selected subsets of data are compared to the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) to check the equilibrium hypothesis and get the source characteristics. Abstract

Hemispherical microlenses have been fabricated at the end of a single-mode optical fiber by a new two-steps method which uses only a continuous CO2 laser. In the first step, the fiber is heated by the laser and stretched until its split resulting in two symmetrical tapers. In the second step, we form the microlenses by laser melting the taper ends. Parameters of heating and stretching are automated and optimized to ensure the reproducibility. The microlens characterization, including the focal length and beam waist measurements, has been performed.
