Thermoplastic polymer–filler composites are excellent materials for bone tissue engineering (TE) scaffolds, combining the functionality of fillers with suitable load-bearing ability, biodegradability, and additive manufacturing (AM) compatibility of the polymer. Two key determinants of their utility are their rheological behavior in the molten state, determining AM processability and their mechanical load-bearing properties. We report here the characterization of both these physical properties for four bone TE relevant composite formulations with poly(ethylene oxide terephthalate)/poly(butylene terephthalate (PEOT/PBT) as a base polymer, which is often used to fabricate TE scaffolds. The fillers used were reduced graphene oxide (rGO), hydroxyapatite (HA), gentamicin intercalated in zirconium phosphate (ZrP-GTM) and ciprofloxacin intercalated in MgAl layered double hydroxide (MgAl-CFX). The rheological assessment showed that generally the viscous behavior dominated the elastic behavior (G″ > G′) for the studied composites, at empirically determined extrusion temperatures. Coupled rheological–thermal characterization of ZrP-GTM and HA composites showed that the fillers increased the solidification temperatures of the polymer melts during cooling. Both these findings have implications for the required extrusion temperatures and bonding between layers. Mechanical tests showed that the fillers generally not only made the polymer stiffer but more brittle in proportion to the filler fractions. Furthermore, the elastic moduli of scaffolds did not directly correlate with the corresponding bulk material properties, implying composite-specific AM processing effects on the mechanical properties. Finally, we show computational models to predict multimaterial scaffold elastic moduli using measured single material scaffold and bulk moduli. Crystal Eye idea comes from the analysis of two gravitational waves events: GW170817 and GW190425. Both events were referred to neutron star mergers. In the first case Fermi-GBM and INTEGRAL claimed the detection of a short Gamma Ray Burst (GRB 170817A) and in order to follow up and target the GW electromagnetic counterparts, a huge effort has been made by other satellites and ground-based experiments. In the second case, only INTEGRAL claimed the detection of a faint GRB (GRB 190425) while Fermi satellite was in Earth occultation. Crystal Eye is a space-based X and γ ray all-sky monitor sensitive in the 10 keV - 30 MeV energy range. In its baseline configuration, it consists of a hemisphere, made by 112 pixels, with a wide (about 6 sr) field of view (FOV), a full sky coverage and a very large effective area (6 times Fermi-GBM at 1 MeV) in the energy range of interest. Given the pixel structure – a two-layer crystal scintillator and a plastic scintillator veto layer – and the hemispherical design, Crystal Eye concentrate the pointing capability of a γ-ray telescope and the sky coverage of an all-sky monitor in a single detector. Moreover, the use of Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) at the place of traditional PMs, besides being a challenge for their qualification for space missions, allows a more compact and less power-consuming design. A Crystal Eye pathfinder has been designed and realized to be tested in view of the mission on the Space Rider by ESA. The prototype is made by 4 pixels. The mission is aimed at testing in the space environment the LYSO crystals, the MPPC-arrays and the DAQ board.

This contribution describes the Trigger board of the High-Energy Particle Detector, which will be placed onboard the second China Seismo-Electromagnetic Satellite for CSES-Limadou mission. This mission will monitor variations in ionospheric parameters that are supposed to be related to earthquakes. The first satellite is already in orbit and the second one will be launched in 2023. The HEPD detector will be composed by a tracker made of CMOS sensors (ALPIDE sensors), followed by two segmented planes of plastic scintillators used for trigger signals generation. The actual calorimeter will be composed by twelve planes of plastic scintillator and two segmented planes of an inorganic scintillator called LYSO. The calorimeter is surrounded by five scintillator planes used as a veto system. All the scintillators are coupled with PMTs, whose signals are acquired and digitized by the Trigger board, that also implements the trigger system for the whole apparatus. The ongoing work on the Trigger board consists in the design of both the hardware and the firmware used for the communication with the other boards of the detector, power managing, and the interfacing with the ASIC used for PMTs’ readout. Eventually the Trigger board will be tested to verify its functionalities and its compliance with the HEPD design specifications. Next developments are the integration of the Trigger board with the other systems on the detector and the environmental testing of the whole system.

The crystalline morphology of ethylene/1-octene (EO-BC) statistical multiblock copolymers is investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). EO-BCs are an important class of thermoplastic elastomers characterized by alternating crystalline, octene-poor, hard blocks and amorphous, octene-rich, soft blocks and statistical distribution of block length (BL) and number of blocks/chain (NB). Adopting similar crystallization conditions, samples with only subtle differences in the chain microstructure, are shown to display different solid-state morphology as probed by TEM and different melt rheology. In particular, the homogeneous or heterogeneous lamellar morphology which develops in the solid state reflects the tendency of the samples to show homogeneous or heterogeneous melt-rheology, respectively. As EO-BCs are a reactor blend of non-uniform chains, it is argued that the solid state and melt phase behavior of EO-BCs is controlled by differences in the relative abundance of chains including a prevalence of hard blocks of short and/or high length.

With the observation of the gravitational wave event of August 17th 2017 the multi-messenger astronomy era has definitely begun. With the opening of this new panorama, it is necessary to have new instruments and a perfect coordination of the existing observatories. Crystal Eye is a detector aimed at the exploration of the electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational waves. Such events generated by neutron stars' mergers are associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRB). At present, there are few instruments in orbit able to detect photons in the energy range going from tens of keV up to few MeV. These instruments belong to two different old observation concepts: the all sky monitors (ASM) and the telescopes. The detector we propose is a crossover technology, the Crystal Eye: a wide field of view observatory in the energy range from 10 keV to 10 MeV with a pixelated structure. A pathfinder will be launched with Space RIDER in 2022. We here present the preliminary results of the characterization of the first pixel.

With the opening of this new panorama, it is necessary to have a perfect coordination of the several observatories. Crystal Eye is an experiment aimed at the exploration of the electromagnetic counterpart of the gravitational wave events. Such events generated by neutron stars collision (or mergers) are associated with gamma-ray bursts. It has actually been observed in the event GW170817 that there is an X-ray counterpart associated with the GW consistent with a short gamma-ray burst viewed off-axis. These X-ray emissions represent the missing observational link between short gamma-ray bursts and gravitational waves from neutron-star mergers. The experiment we propose is a wide field of view observatory (2{\pi} of local observation) in the energy range from tens of keV to few MeV designed to fly with International Space Station (ISS). The motion along the ISS orbit will allow the experiment to scan the sky at 4? in 90 minutes. The Crystal Eye objectives will be: to alert the community about events containing X-rays and low energy gamma-rays, to monitor long-term variabilities of X-ray sources, to stimulate multi-wavelength observations of variable objects, and to observe diffuse cosmic X-ray emissions. With its characteristics, Crystal Eye will provide the continuous exploration and monitoring of the Universe after a Gravitational Wave event with a better resolution than Fermi GBM. Thanks to its large field of view and its design, it has the potentiality to be the trigger for those present X ray-astronomy missions (Chandra, Swift, Integral XMM Newton) that are based on high angular resolution pointing experiment but that have unfortunately a very small field of view., Comment: Published on SPIE digital library

We report about a study of the light response of a solid polystyrene-based scintillator with an arch shaped geometry, directly coupled to Silicon Photo Multiplier sensors for the light readout. This geometry is relevant for the design of a novel borehole detector for "muography" applications in Civil Engineering, Geology or Archaeology. The scintillator response has been investigated using a dedicated experimental set-up based on the detection of cosmic ray muons. Configurations that use reflecting and diffusive materials have been tested, as well as configurations with a cover specifically designed to enclose and protect the scintillator. The results found a good compromise between the light response and an easy solution for the detector assembly.

A new detection array called GASTLY (GAs-Silicon Two-Layer sYstem) has been designed to detect and identify low-energy light particles emitted in nuclear reactions of astrophysical interest. Devoted to the measurement of nanobarn cross-sections, the system is optimised for large solid angle coverage and for low-energy detection thresholds. The array consists of eight modules, each comprising an ionisation chamber and a large area silicon strip detector. Its modularity and versatility allow for use in a variety of experiments. Here we report on the performance of the array as obtained during its commissioning phase with standard $\alpha$ -particle sources and during in-beam tests with an intense 12C beam. Typical energy resolutions $\Delta E(\mathrm{FWHM})/E$ of about 3% and 2% were obtained for the ionisation chambers and the silicon detectors, respectively. The status of the development of individual strip readout, based on ASIC technology, is also presented.

We report an experimental study on suspensions of solid particles in a viscoelastic polymer matrix. A commercial entangled poly(e-caprolactone) was used as the suspending fluid. Noncolloidal solid spheres (diameter = 15 μm) made of polymethylmethacrylate were dispersed in the polymer via a solvent casting method. The volume fraction of the spheres was varied from 5% to 30%, thus allowing to explore both dilute and concentrated regimes. Electron scanning microscopy demonstrated homogeneous dispersion of the spheres in the matrix. We measured the rheological properties of the suspensions both in linear and nonlinear regimes with both dynamic and transient tests. The experimental results demonstrate the reinforcement effect of the particles. Both viscous and elastic moduli increase as the concentration of the particles is increased. The results show good agreement with available theories, simulations, and previous experimental data. In particular, the second order parameter of the quadratic equation that describes the dependence of the shear viscosity of the suspension upon the volume fraction of particles is in agreement with the predicted value found by Batchelor [G.
