Two-dimensional materials have attracted considerable attention due to their remarkable electronic, mechanical and optical properties, making them prime candidates for next-generation electronic and optoelectronic applications. Despite their widespread use in combination with substrates in practical applications, including the fabrication process and final device assembly, computational studies often neglect the effects of substrate interactions for simplicity. This study presents a novel method for predicting the atomic structure of 2D materials on arbitrary substrates by combining an evolutionary algorithm, a lattice-matching technique, an automated machine learning interatomic potentials training protocol, and the ab initio thermodynamics approach for predicting the possible conditions of experimental synthesis of the predicted 2D structures. Using the Mo-S system on a c-cut sapphire substrate as a case study, we reveal several new stable and metastable structures, including previously known 1H-MoS2 and newly found Pmma Mo3S2, P-1 Mo2S, P21m Mo5S3, and P4mm Mo4S, where the Mo4S structure is specifically stabilized by interaction with the substrate. Electronic band structure calculations of Mo3S2, Mo2S, Mo5S3, and Mo4S showed their metallic behavior, while phonon properties calculations indicated their dynamic stability and substrate-induced modulation of the phonon density of states. Finally, we use the ab initio thermodynamics approach to predict the synthesis conditions of the discovered structures in the parameter space of the commonly used CVD technique. These results provide insights into computational substrate engineering, allowing one to study the substrate effect on the thermodynamic and dynamical stability of 2D materials and to modulate their electronic and phonon properties for their future applications, as well as to provide guide maps for their experimental synthesis.

Calculations of elastic and mechanical characteristics of non-crystalline solids are challenging due to high computation cost of $ab$ $initio$ methods and low accuracy of empirical potentials. We propose a computational technique towards efficient calculations of mechanical properties of polycrystals, composites, and multi-phase systems from atomistic simulation with high accuracy and reasonable computational cost. It is based on using actively learned machine learning interatomic potentials (MLIPs) trained on a local fragments of the polycrystalline system for which forces, stresses and energies are computed by using $ab$ $initio$ calculations. Developed approach is used for calculation the dependence of elastic moduli of polycrystalline diamond on the grain size. This technique allows one to perform large-scale calculations of mechanical properties of complex solids of various compositions and structures with high accuracy making the transition from ideal (single crystal) systems to more realistic ones.

In the last decades, material discovery has been a very active research field driven by the need to find new materials for many different applications. This has also included materials with heavy elements, beyond the stable isotopes of lead, as most actinides exhibit unique properties that make them useful in various applications. Furthermore, new heavy elements beyond actinides, collectively referred to as super-heavy elements (SHEs), have been synthesized, filling previously empty space of Mendeleev periodic table. Their chemical bonding behavior, of academic interest at present, would also benefit of state-of-the-art modeling approaches. In particular, in order to perform first-principles calculations with planewave basis sets, one needs corresponding pseudopotentials. In this work, we present a series of scalar- and fully-relativistic optimized norm-conserving Vanderbilt pseudopotentials (ONCVPs) for thirty-four actinides and super-heavy elements, for three different exchange-correlation functionals (PBE, PBEsol and LDA). The scalar-relativistic version of these ONCVPs is tested by comparing equations of states for crystals, obtained with \textsc{abinit} 9.6, with those obtained by all-electron zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) calculations, without spin-orbit coupling, performed with the Amsterdam Modeling Suite \textsc{band} code. $\Delta$-Gauge and $\Delta_1$-Gauge indicators are used to validate these pseudopotentials. This work is a contribution to the PseudoDojo project, in which pseudopotentials for the whole periodic table are developed and systematically tested. The pseudopotential files are available on the PseudoDojo web-interface pseudo-dojo.org in psp8 and UPF2 formats, both suitable for \textsc{abinit}, the latter being also suitable for Quantum ESPRESSO.

Polyhydride superconductors have been shown to possess metallic properties with a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer-type superconducting ground state. Here, we provide evidence for unconventional transport associated with a pseudogap phase in cubic cerium superhydride CeH$_{10}$ ($\textit{T}$$_C$ = 116 K) at pressure of 115-125 GPa. A large negative magnetoresistance in the non-superconducting state below 90 K, quasi $\textit{T}$-linear electrical resistance, and a sign-change of its temperature dependence mark the emergence of this phase. We studied the magnetic phase diagrams and the upper critical fields $\textit{B}$$_{C2}$(T) of CeH$_{10}$, CeH$_9$, and CeD$_9$ in pulsed fields up to 70 T. $\textit{B}$$_{C2}$(T) of CeH$_9$ and CeD$_9$ exhibits pronounced saturation at low temperatures in accordance with the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model, whereas CeH$_{10}$ stands out in particular, as it does not obey this model. A spin Hamiltonian, which characterizes interatomic interactions between spin moments, is highly valuable in predicting and comprehending the magnetic properties of materials. A deeper understanding of the microscopic origin of magnetic interactions can open new pathways toward realizing nanometer-scale systems for future spintronic devices. Here, we explore a method for explicitly calculating interatomic exchange interactions in non-collinear configurations of magnetic materials considering only a bilinear spin Hamiltonian in a local scenario. Based on density-functional theory (DFT) calculations of dimers adsorbed on metallic surfaces, and with a focus on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which is essential for stabilizing chiral non-collinear magnetic states, we discuss the interpretation of the DMI when decomposed into microscopic electron and spin densities and currents. We clarify the distinct origins of spin currents induced in the system and their connection to the DMI. In addition, we reveal how non-collinearity affects the usual DMI, which is solely induced by spin-orbit coupling, and DMI-like interactions brought about by non-collinearity. We explain how the dependence of the DMI on the magnetic configuration establishes a connection between high-order magnetic interactions, enabling the transition from a local to a global spin Hamiltonian., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Hardness is a materials' property with implications in several industrial fields, including oil and gas, manufacturing, and others. However, the relationship between this macroscale property and atomic (i.e., microscale) properties is unknown and in the last decade several models have unsuccessfully tried to correlate them in a wide range of chemical space. The understanding of such relationship is of fundamental importance for discovery of harder materials with specific characteristics to be employed in a wide range of fields. In this work, we have found a physical descriptor for Vickers hardness using a symbolic-regression artificial-intelligence approach based on compressed sensing. SISSO (Sure Independence Screening plus Sparsifying Operator) is an artificial-intelligence algorithm used for discovering simple and interpretable predictive models. It performs feature selection from up to billions of candidates obtained from several primary features by applying a set of mathematical operators. The resulting sparse SISSO model accurately describes the target property (i.e., Vickers hardness) with minimal complexity. We have considered the experimental values of hardness for binary, ternary, and quaternary transition-metal borides, carbides, nitrides, carbonitrides, carboborides, and boronitrides of 61 materials, on which the fitting was performed. The found descriptor is a non-linear function of the microscopic properties, with the most significant contribution being from a combination of Voigt-averaged bulk modulus, Poisson's ratio, and Reuss-averaged shear modulus. Results of high-throughput screening of 635 candidate materials using the found descriptor suggest the enhancement of material's hardness through mixing with harder yet metastable structures (e.g., metastable VN, TaN, ReN$_2$, Cr$_3$N$_4$, and ZrB$_6$ all exhibit high hardness).

We studied chemical interaction of Sn with H$_2$ by X-ray diffraction methods at pressures of 180-210 GPa. A previously unknown tetrahydride SnH$_4$ with a cubic structure (${fcc}$) exhibiting superconducting properties below ${T}$$_C$ = 72 K was obtained; the formation of a high molecular ${C2/m}$-SnH$_{14}$ superhydride and several lower hydrides, ${fcc}$ SnH$_2$ and ${C2}$-Sn$_{12}$H$_{18}$, was also detected. The temperature dependence of critical current density ${J}$$_C$(T) in SnH$_4$ yields the superconducting gap 2$\Delta$(0) = 23 meV at 180 GPa. SnH$_4$ has unusual behavior in strong magnetic fields: ${B,T}$-linear dependences of magnetoresistance and the upper critical magnetic field ${B}$$_{C2}$(T) $\propto$ (${T}$$_C$ - ${T}$). The latter contradicts the Wertheimer-Helfand-Hohenberg model developed for conventional superconductors. Along with this, the temperature dependence of electrical resistance of ${fcc}$ SnH$_4$ in non-superconducting state exhibits a deviation from what is expected for phonon-mediated scattering described by the Bloch-Gr\"uneisen model, and is beyond the framework of the Fermi liquid theory. Synthesis of high-entropy carbides (HEC) requires high temperatures that can be provided by electric arc plasma method. However, the formation temperature of a single-phase sample remains unknown. Moreover, under some temperatures multi-phase structures can emerge. In this work we developed an approach for a controllable synthesis of HEC TiZrNbHfTaC5 based on theoretical and experimental techniques. We used canonical Monte Carlo (CMC) simulations with the machine learning interatomic potentials to determine the temperature conditions for the formation of single-phase and multi-phase samples. In full agreement with the theory, the single-phase sample, produced with electric arc discharge, was observed at 2000 K. Below 1200 K the sample decomposed into (Ti-Nb-Ta)C and a mixture of (Zr-Hf-Ta)C, (Zr-Nb-Hf)C, (Zr-Nb)C, and (Zr-Ta)C. Our results demonstrate the conditions for the formation of HEC and we anticipate that our approach can pave the way towards targeted synthesis of multicomponent materials., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures

Graphene/hBN heterostructures can be considered as one of the basic building blocks for the next-generation optoelectronics mostly owing to the record-high electron mobilities. However, currently, the studies of the intrinsic optical properties of graphene are limited to the standard substrates (SiO2/Si, glass, quartz) despite the growing interest in graphene/hBN heterostructures. This can be attributed to a challenging task of the determination of hBN's strongly anisotropic dielectric tensor in the total optical response. In this study, we overcome this issue through imaging spectroscopic ellipsometry utilizing simultaneous analysis of hBN's optical response with and without graphene monolayers. Our technique allowed us to retrieve the optical constants of graphene from graphene/hBN heterostructures in a broad spectral range of 250-950 nm. Our results suggest that graphene's absorption on hBN may exceed the one of graphene on SiO2/Si by about 60 %.

The complex electronic structure of metallic ferromagnets is determined by a balance between exchange interaction, electron hopping leading to band formation, and local Coulomb repulsion. The interplay between the respective terms of the Hamiltonian is of fundamental interest, since it produces most, if not all, of the exotic phenomena observed in the solid state. By combining high energy and temporal resolution in femtosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy with ab initio time-dependent density functional theory we analyze the electronic structure in fcc Ni on the time scale of these interactions in a pump-probe experiment. We distinguish transient broadening and energy shifts in the absorption spectra, which we demonstrate to be caused by electron repopulation and correlation-induced modifications of the electronic structure, respectively. Importantly, the theoretical description of this experimental result hence requires to take the local Coulomb interaction into account, revealing a temporal interplay between band formation, exchange interaction, and Coulomb repulsion.

The incoherent Thomson scattering diagnostic with multiple line of sight is installed at the gas dynamic trap (GDT) for measurements of radial profiles of the plasma electron temperature and density. The diagnostic is based on a Nd:YAG laser with the wavelength of $1064 nm$. Its collecting lens uses $90^\circ$ scattering geometry having eleven lines of sight in total. At the current stage, six of them are equipped with interference filter spectrometers. Results of the initial operation within a month-long experimental campaign at GDT show that radial profiles are delivered with the accuracy of few percent for $T_e \geqslant 20 eV$ and $n_e \geqslant 10^{19} m^{-3}$. The next planned boost of the diagnostic performance is upgrade with the pulse burst laser to study a fast dynamics of plasma parameters in every GDT shot.

First-principles calculations reported here illuminate the effects of the interfacial properties of $\alpha$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ and graphene, with emphasis on the structural and electronic properties. Various contact interfaces and different $\alpha$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ surface terminations are considered with on and slightly-off stoichiometric aluminium oxide. We show that depending on whether aluminium or oxygen is in contact with graphene, an $sp^{3}$ structural deformation and spontaneous spin-polarization may occur next to the interface contact. Interestingly, some cases cause a $p$-type doping in the graphene band structure, depending on the initial $\alpha$-Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ geometry placed on graphene. The importance of leaving the surface dangling bonds of alumina saturated or not is also highlighted, and we show that it might be a control mechanism for opening a gap in graphene by the influence of the $sp^{3}$ bond between oxygen and carbon atoms at the interface. Over the past six years (2015-2021), many superconducting hydrides with critical temperatures $T_{C}$ up to 250 K, which are currently record highs, have been discovered. Now we can already say that a special field of superconductivity has developed. This is hydride superconductivity at ultrahigh pressures. For the most part, the properties of superhydrides are well described by the Migdal-Eliashberg theory of strong electron-phonon interaction, especially when anharmonicity of phonons is taken into account. The isotope effect, the effect of the magnetic field (up to 60-70 T) on the critical temperature and critical current in the hydride samples, the dependence of $T_{C}$ on the pressure and degree of doping were investigated. The divergences between the theory and experiment are of interest, especially in the field of phase stability and in the behavior of the upper critical magnetic fields at low temperatures. In this report we review the method of explicit calculations of interatomic exchange interactions of magnetic materials. This involves exchange mechanisms normally referred to as Heisenberg exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and anisotropic symmetric exchange. The connection between microscopic theories of the electronic structure, such as density functional theory or dynamical mean field theory, and interatomic exchange, is given in detail. The different aspects of extracting information for an effective spin Hamiltonian that involves thousands of atoms, from electronic structure calculations considering significantly fewer atoms (1-50) is highlighted. Examples of exchange interactions of a large group of materials is presented, which involves heavy elements of the 3d period, alloys between transition metals, Heusler compounds, multilayer systems as well as overlayers and adatoms on a substrate, transition metal oxides, 4f elements, magnetic materials in two dimensions and molecular magnets. Where possible, a comparison to experimental data is made, that naturally becomes focused on the magnon dispersion. The influence of relativity is reviewed for a few cases, as is the importance of dynamical correlations. Development to theories that handle out of equilibrium conditions is also described here. The review ends with a short description of extensions of the theories behind explicit calculations of interatomic exchange, to non-magnetic situations, e.g. that describe chemical (charge) order and superconductivity.

In this work, we report on an $ab-initio$ computational study of the electronic and magnetic properties of transition metal adatoms on a monolayer of NbSe$_2$. We demonstrate that Cr, Mn, Fe and Co prefer all to sit above the Nb atom, where the $d$ states experience a substantial hybridization. The inter-atomic exchange coupling is shown to have an oscillatory nature accompanied by an exponential decay, in accordance with what theory predicts for a damped Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction. Our results indicate that the qualitative features of the magnetic coupling for the four investigated adatoms can be connected to the fine details of their Fermi surface. In particular, the oscillations of the exchange in Fe and Co are found to be related to a single nesting vector, connecting large electrons and hole pockets. Most interestingly, this behavior is found to be unaffected by changes induced on the height of the impurity, which makes the magnetism robust to external perturbations. Considering that NbSe$_2$ is a superconductor down to a single layer, our research might open the path for further research into the interplay between magnetic and superconducting characteristics, which could lead to novel superconductivity engineering.

The growing families of two-dimensional crystals derived from naturally occurring van der Waals materials offer an unprecedented platform to investigate elusive physical phenomena and could be of use in a diverse range of devices. Of particular interest are recently reported atomic sheets of non-van der Waals materials, which could allow a better comprehension of the nature of structural bonds and increase the functionality of prospective heterostructures. Here, we study the optostructural properties of ultrathin non-van der Waals InGaS3 sheets produced by standard mechanical cleavage. Our ab initio calculation results suggest an emergence of authentically delicate out-of-plane covalent bonds within its unit cell, and, as a consequence, an artificial generation of layered structure within the material. Those yield to singular layer isolation energies of around 50 meVA-2, which is comparable with the conventional van der Waals material's monolayer isolation energies of 20 - 60 meVA-2. In addition, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the structural, vibrational, and optical properties of the materials presenting that it is a wide bandgap (2.73 eV) semiconductor with a high-refractive index (higher than 2.5) and negligible losses in the visible and infrared spectral ranges. It makes it a perfect candidate for further establishment of visible-range all-dielectric nanophotonics.

Polyhydrides are a novel class of superconducting materials with extremely high critical parameters, which is very promising for applications. On the other hand, complete experimental study of the magnetic phase diagram for the best so far known superconductor, lanthanum decahydride LaH$_{10}$, encounters a serious complication because of the large upper critical magnetic field $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$(0), exceeding 120-160 T. Partial replacement of La atoms by magnetic Nd atoms results in a decrease of the upper critical field, which makes it attainable for existing pulse magnets. We found that addition of neodymium leads to significant suppression of superconductivity in LaH$_{10}$: each atomic % of Nd causes decrease in $\textit{T}$$_{C}$ by 10-11 K. Using strong pulsed magnetic fields up to 68 T, we constructed the magnetic phase diagram of the ternary (La,Nd)H$_{10}$ superhydride, which appears to be surprisingly linear with $\textit{H}$$_{C2}$ $\propto$ |$\textit{T}$ - $\textit{T}$$_C$|. The pronounced suppression of superconductivity in LaH$_{10}$ by magnetic Nd atoms and the robustness of $\textit{T}$$_C$ with respect to nonmagnetic impurities (e.g., Y, Al, C) under Anderson's theorem indicate the isotropic ($\textit{s}$-wave) character of conventional electron-phonon pairing in the synthesized superhydrides., Comment: Supporting Information is included

Magnetoelastic coupling and uniaxial pressure dependencies of the ferromagnetic ordering temperature in the quasi-two-dimensional layered van-der-Waals material CrI$_3$ are experimentally studied and quantified by high-resolution dilatometry. Clear anomalies in the thermal expansion coefficients at $T_{\rm C}$ imply positive (negative) pressure dependencies $\partial T_{\rm C}/\partial p_{\rm i}$ for pressure applied along (perpendicular to) the $c$ axis. The experimental results are backed up by numerical studies showing that the dominant, intra-layer magnetic coupling increases upon compression along the $c$ direction and decreases with negative in-plane strain. In contrast, inter-layer exchange is shown to initially increase and subsequently decrease upon the application of both out-of-plane and in-plane compression., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

We report on a combined experimental and theoretical study on CrI3 single crystals by employing the polarization dependence of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). Our investigations reveal multiple Cr 3d orbital splitting (dd excitations) as well as magnetic dichroism (MD) in the RIXS spectra which is evidence of spin-flip in the dd excitation. Interestingly, the dd excitation energies are similar on both sides of the ferromagnetic transition temperature, TC of 61 K, although MD in RIXS is predominant at 0.4 tesla magnetic field below TC. This demonstrates that the ferromagnetic superexchange interaction that is responsible for the intra-atomic exchange field, is vanishingly small compared to local exchange field that comes from exchange and correlation interaction among the interacting Cr 3d orbitals. The investigation presented here demonstrate that the electronic structure of bulk CrI3 is complex in the sense that dynamical electron correlations are significant. The recorded RIXS spectra reported here reveal clearly resolved Cr 3d intra-orbital dd excitations that represent transitions between electronic levels that are heavily influenced by multi-configuration effects. Our calculations employing the crystal field TTmultiplet theory taking into account the Cr 3d hybridization with the ligand valence states and the full multiplet structure due to intra-atomic and crystal field interactions in Oh and D3d symmetry, clearly reproduced the dichroic trend in experimental RIXS spectra., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Time-dependent energy spectra of galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) carry fundamental information regarding their origin and propagation. When observed at the Earth, these spectra are significantly affected by the solar wind and the embedded solar magnetic field that permeates the heliosphere, changing significantly over an 11-year solar cycle. Energy spectra of GCRs measured during different epochs of solar activity provide crucial information for a thorough understanding of solar and heliospheric phenomena. The PAMELA experiment had collected data for almost ten years (15th June 2006 - 23rd January 2016), including the minimum phase of solar cycle 23 and the maximum phase of solar cycle 24. In this paper, we present new spectra for helium nuclei measured by the PAMELA instrument from January 2010 to September 2014 over a three Carrington rotation time basis. These data are compared to the PAMELA spectra measured during the previous solar minimum providing a picture of the time dependence of the helium nuclei fluxes over a nearly full solar cycle. Time and rigidity dependencies are observed in the proton-to-helium flux ratios. The force-field approximation of the solar modulation was used to relate these dependencies to the shapes of the local interstellar proton and helium-nuclei spectra., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Since thermal fluctuations become more important as dimensions shrink, it is expected that low-dimensional magnets are more sensitive to lattice distortions and phonons than bulk systems are. Here we present a fully relativistic first-principles study on the spin-lattice coupling, i.e. how the magnetic interactions depend on local lattice distortions, of the prototypical two-dimensional ferromagnet CrI$_3$. We extract an effective measure of the spin-lattice coupling in CrI$_3$ which is up to ten times larger than what is found for bcc Fe. The magnetic exchange interactions, including Heisenberg and relativistic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, are sensitive both to the in-plane motion of Cr atoms and out-of-plane motion of ligand atoms. We find that significant magnetic pair interactions change sign from ferromagnetic (FM) to anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) for atomic displacements larger than 0.16 {\AA}. We explain the observed strong spin-lattice coupling by analyzing the orbital decomposition of isotropic exchange interactions, involving different crystal-field-split Cr$-3d$ orbitals. The competition between the AFM t$_{2g}$ - t$_{2g}$ and FM t$_{2g}$ - e$_{g}$ contributions depends on the bond angle formed by Cr and I atoms as well as Cr-Cr distance. In particular, if a Cr atom is displaced, the FM-AFM sign change when the I-Cr-I bond angle approaches 90$^\circ$. The obtained spin-lattice coupling constants, along with the microscopic orbital analysis can act as a guiding principle for further studies of the thermodynamic properties and combined magnon-phonon excitations in two-dimensional magnets.

Magnetic nanoparticles such as FePt in the L10-phase are the bedrock of our current data storage technology. As the grains become smaller to keep up with technological demands, the superparamagnetic limit calls for materials with higher magneto-crystalline anisotropy. This in turn reduces the magnetic exchange length to just a few nanometers enabling magnetic structures to be induced within the nanoparticles. Here we describe the existence of spin-wave solitons, dynamic localized bound states of spin-wave excitations, in FePt nanoparticles. We show with time-resolved X-ray diffraction and micromagnetic modeling that spin-wave solitons of sub-10 nm sizes form out of the demagnetized state following femtosecond laser excitation. An upgraded version of the OGRAN -- combined optical-acoustic gravitational wave detector -- has been investigated in a long-term operation mode. This installation, located at the Baksan Neutrino Observatory (BNO) INR RAS, is designed to work under the program for detecting collapsing stars in parallel with the neutrino detector: Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope (BUST). Such joint search corresponds to the modern trend for a development of "multi-messenger astronomy". In this work the effects of thermal relaxation OGRAN are experimentally investigated using passive and active thermal stabilization systems in the underground laboratory BNO PK-14.

Recently, several research groups announced reaching the point of metallization of hydrogen above 400 GPa. Following the mainstream of extensive investigations of compressed polyhydrides, in this work we demonstrate that small (4 atom %) doping of molecular hydrogen by strontium leads to a dramatic reduction in the metallization pressure to about 200 GPa. Studying the high-pressure chemistry of the Sr-H system at 56-180 GPa, we observed the formation of several previously unknown compounds: C2/m-Sr$_3$H$_{13}$, pseudocubic SrH$_6$, SrH$_9$ with cubic F-43m Sr sublattice, and pseudotetragonal P1-SrH$_{22}$, the metal hydride with the highest hydrogen content discovered so far. Unlike Ca and Y, strontium forms molecular semiconducting polyhydrides, whereas calcium and yttrium polyhydrides are high-Tc superconductors with an atomic H sublattice. The latter phase, SrH$_{22}$ or Sr$_{0.04}$H$_{0.96}$, may be considered as a convenient model of the consistent bandgap closure and metallization of hydrogen. Using the impedance measurements in diamond anvil cells at 300-440 K, we estimated the direct bandgap of the Pm-3n-like compound P1-SrH$_6$ to be 0.44-0.51 eV at 150 GPa, and its metallization pressure to be 220 GPa. Together with the machine learning interatomic potentials, the impedance spectroscopy allowed us to estimate the diffusion coefficients of hydrogen D$_H$ = 1.0-2.8 E-10 m$^2$/s in SrH$_6$ and 1.2-2.1 E-9 m$^2$/s in P1-SrH$_{22}$ at 500-600 K., Comment: Supporting information was compressed and reduced by 2 times to 36 figures

We present a study of the solar-cycle variations of >80 MeV proton flux intensities in the lower edge of the inner radiation belt, based on the measurements of the Payload for Antimatter Matter Exploration and Light-nuclei Astrophysics (PAMELA) mission. The analyzed data sample covers an ~8 year interval from 2006 July to 2014 September, thus spanning from the decaying phase of the 23rd solar cycle to the maximum of the 24th cycle. We explored the intensity temporal variations as a function of drift shell and proton energy, also providing an explicit investigation of the solar-modulation effects at different equatorial pitch angles. Through advanced experimental techniques on CrI$_{3}$ single crystals, we derive a previously not discussed pressure-temperature phase diagram. We find that $T_{c}$ increases to $\sim$ 66\,K with pressure up to $\sim$ 3\,GPa followed by a decrease to $\sim$ 10\,K at 21.2\,GPa. The experimental results are reproduced by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory where electron-electron interactions are treated by a static on-site Hubbard U on Cr 3$d$ orbitals. The origin of the pressure induced reduction of the ordering temperature is associated with a decrease of the calculated bond angle, from 95$^{\circ}$ at ambient pressure to $\sim$ 85$^{\circ}$ at 25\,GPa. Above 22\,GPa, the magnetically ordered state is essentially quenched, possibly driving the system to a Kitaev spin-liquid state at low temperature, thereby opening up the possibility of further exploration of long-range quantum entanglement between spins. The pressure-induced semiconductor-to-metal phase transition was revealed by high-pressure resistivity that is accompanied by a transition from a robust ferromagnetic state to gradually more dominating anti-ferromagnetic interactions and was consistent with theoretical modeling.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, DMI in short, represents an antisymmetric type of magnetic interactions that favour orthogonal orientation of spins and competes with Heisenberg exchange. Being introduced to explain weak ferromagnetism in antiferromagnets without an inversion center between magnetic atoms such an anisotropic interaction can be used to analyze other non-trivial magnetic structures of technological importance including spin spirals and skyrmions. Despite the fact that the corresponding DMI contribution to the magnetic energy of the system has a very compact form of the vector product of spins, the determination of DMI from first-principles electronic structure is a very challenging methodological and technical problem whose solution opens a door into the fascinating microscopic world of complex magnetic materials. The scenario of a metal-insulator transition driven by the onset of antiferromagnetic order in NaOsO$_3$ calls for a trustworthy derivation of the underlying effective spin Hamiltonian. To determine the latter we rely on {\it ab initio} electronic-structure calculations, linear spin-wave theory, and comparison to experimental data of the corresponding magnon spectrum. We arrive this way to Heisenberg couplings that are $\lesssim$45\% to$\lesssim$63\% smaller than values presently proposed in the literature and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the region of 15\% of the Heisenberg exchange $J$. These couplings together with the symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction and single-ion magnetocrystalline anisotropy successfully reproduce the magnon dispersion obtained by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering measurements. In particular, the spin-wave gap fully agrees with the measured one. We find that the spin-wave gap is defined from a subtle interplay between the single-ion anisotropy, the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange and the symmetric anisotropic exchange interactions. The results reported here underpin the local-moment description of NaOsO$_3$, when it comes to analyzing the magnetic excitation spectra. Interestingly, this comes about from a microscopic theory that describes the electron system as Bloch states, adjusted to a mean-field solution to Hubbard-like interactions., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Stabilization of unusual spin-orbit driven magnetic orderings are achieved for chains of Mn atoms deposited on a W(110) substrate. First-principles electronic structure calculations show that the ground state spin configuration is non-collinear, forming spirals as a result of a competition between nearest and next-nearest neighbour exchange interactions. The orbital magnetic moments are also found to exhibit non-collinear ordering, that interestingly for some systems is incommensurate with the spin arrangement. We attribute such an exotic behaviour to the competition between the and spin-orbital interaction and crystal-field splitting effects. Model calculations based on this assumption reproduce the main findings observed in the first-principles calculations.
