The present article aims to spur interest in the pedagogical potential of translating musicalized texts, a genre that for a long time has remained on the periphery of Applied Translation Studies. First, it provides a broad overview of the various theoretical perspectives that the academic community has had throughout history on the translation of musicalized texts. Particular attention is drawn to two of the most significant approaches: Low's (2005) "Pentathlon Principle," and Franzon's (2008) five choices in song translation, as well as to some of the most recent didactic proposals that revolve around the translation of this text genre. The article also includes a four-session didactic proposal framed in the course Translation Training V: English-Spanish and Spanish-English offered by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) that aims to illustrate a potential application of the use of translation of musicalized texts as a teaching tool.

In this paper, a number of STEM educational proposals are systematically analyzed from the lens of mathematics education. An extensive innovation project was implemented during the 2019/2020 academic year in a pilot study carried out in Schools and Teacher Training Programs in Navarre (Spain), comprising a bibliographical and source analysis as a previous step to characterize the existing material, and ultimately to design and test STEM projects at different educational levels from the point of view of mathematical education. All activities belong to international publications and widely used and contrasted web repositories, and seize the usual interval of compulsory education, i.e., from the beginning of Primary School (age 6/7) to the end of Secondary School (age 15/16). The findings draw a panorama of STEM activities where mathematics is mostly utilitarian, numbers and units are functionally used to measure quantities of magnitudes, and geometric contents serve the purpose of modeling a technological prototype. As it turns out, some STEM-labelled activities do not fulfill their principles and fundamental purposes. In lower levels, there is a common confusion between STEM activities and science laboratory projects; in higher levels, complex mathematical content could appear. Even though some activities are guided science laboratory projects, it is concluded that most STEM activities have the potential of a-didactical situations, i.e., contexts where students put into practice their personal problem-solving techniques before teachers formalize the mathematical content.

This contribution aims at analysing the speech-to-text recognition of news programmes in the regional channel ETB1 for subtitling in Basque using ADITU (2024) (a technology developed by the Elhuyar foundation) applying the NER model of analysis (Romero-Fresco and Martínez 2015). A total of 20 samples of approximately 5 minutes each were recorded from the regional channel ETB1 in May, 2022. A total of 97 minutes and 1737 subtitles were analysed by applying criteria from the NER model. The results show an average accuracy rate of 94.63% if we take all errors into account, and 96.09% if we exclude punctuation errors. A qualitative analysis based on quantitative data foresees some room for improvement regarding language models of the software, punctuation, recognition of proper nouns and speaker identification. From the evidence it may be concluded that, although quantitative data does not reach the threshold to consider the quality of recognition fair or comprehensible with regards to the NER model, results seem promising. When presenters speak with clear diction and standard language, accuracy rates are sufficient for a minority language like Basque in which speech recognition software is still in early phases of development.

Chronic inflammation has been recognized as a canonical cancer hallmark. It is orchestrated by cytokines, which are master regulators of the tumor microenvironment (TME) as they represent the main communication bridge between cancer cells, the tumor stroma, and the immune system. Interleukin (IL)-6 represents a keystone cytokine in the link between inflammation and cancer. Many cytokines from the IL-6 family, which includes IL-6, oncostatin M, leukemia inhibitory factor, IL-11, IL-27, IL-31, ciliary neurotrophic factor, cardiotrophin 1, and cardiotrophin-like cytokine factor 1, have been shown to elicit tumor-promoting roles by modulating the TME, making them attractive therapeutic targets for cancer treatment.The development of immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) immunotherapies has radically changed the outcome of some cancers including melanoma, lung, and renal, although not without hurdles. However, ICB shows limited efficacy in other solid tumors. Recent reports support that chronic inflammation and IL-6 cytokine signaling are involved in resistance to immunotherapy. This review summarizes the available preclinical and clinical data regarding the implication of IL-6-related cytokines in regulating the immune TME and the response to ICB. Moreover, the potential clinical benefit of combining ICB with therapies targeting IL-6 cytokine members for cancer treatment is discussed.

In many applications, interest focuses on assessing relationships between covariates and the extremes of the distribution of a continuous response. For example, in climate studies, a usual approach to assess climate change has been based on the analysis of annual maximum data. Using the generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution, we can model trends in the annual maximum temperature using the high number of available atmospheric covariates. However, there is typically uncertainty in which of the many candidate covariates should be included. Bayesian methods for variable selection are very useful to identify important covariates. However, such methods are currently very limited for moderately high dimensional variable selection in GEV regression. We propose a Bayesian method for variable selection based on a stochastic search variable selection (SSVS) algorithm proposed for posterior computation. The method is applied to the selection of atmospheric covariates in annual maximum temperature series in three Spanish stations.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to determine the effects of an upper body compression garment (UBCG) on thermoregulatory responses during cycling in a controlled laboratory thermoneutral environment (~23°C). A secondary aim was to determine the cardiovascular and perceptual responses when wearing the garment. Methods: Sixteen untrained participants (age: 21.3 ± 5.7 years; peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak): 50.88 ± 8.00 mL/min/kg; mean ± SD) performed 2 cycling trials in a thermoneutral environment (~23°C) wearing either UBCG or control (Con) garment. Testing consisted of a 5-min rest on a cycle ergometer, followed by 4 bouts of cycling for 14-min at ~50%VO2peak, with 1-min rest between each bout. At the end of these bouts there was 10-min of passive recovery. During the entire protocol rectal temperature (Trec), skin temperature (Tskin), mean body temperature (Tbody), and heat storage (HS) were measured. Heart rate (HR), VO2, pH, hematocrit (Hct), plasma electrolytes, weight loss (Wloss), and perceptual responses were also measured. Results: There were no significant differences between garments for Tskin, HS, HR, VO2, pH, Hct, plasma electrolyte concentration, Wloss, and perceptual responses during the trial. Trec did not differ between garment conditions during rest, exercise, or recovery although a greater reduction in Trec wearing UBCG (p = 0.01) was observed during recovery. Lower Tbody during recovery was found when wearing UBCG (36.82°C ± 0.30°C vs. 36.99°C ± 0.24°C). Conclusion: Wearing a UBCG did not benefit thermoregulatory, cardiovascular, and perceptual responses during exercise although it was found to lower Tbody during recovery, which suggests that it could be used as a recovery tool after exercise. The tumor microenvironment (TME) is reprogrammed by cancer cells and participates in all stages of tumor progression. The contribution of stromal cells to the reprogramming of the TME is not well understood. Here, we provide evidence of the role of the cytokine oncostatin M (OSM) as central node for multicellular interactions between immune and nonimmune stromal cells and the epithelial cancer cell compartment. OSM receptor (OSMR) deletion in a multistage breast cancer model halted tumor progression. We ascribed causality to the stromal function of the OSM axis by demonstrating reduced tumor burden of syngeneic tumors implanted in mice lacking OSMR. Single-cell and bioinformatic analysis of murine and human breast tumors revealed that OSM expression was restricted to myeloid cells, whereas OSMR was detected predominantly in fibroblasts and, to a lower extent, cancer cells. Myeloid-derived OSM reprogrammed fibroblasts to a more contractile and tumorigenic phenotype and elicited the secretion of VEGF and proinflammatory chemokines CXCL1 and CXCL16, leading to increased myeloid cell recruitment. The present work involves an extensive analytical and toxicological description of a recently identified mixed halogenated carbazole found in sediment samples, 1,8-dibromo-3,6-dichloro-9H-carbazole (BCCZ). Concentrations and the relative effect potency (REP) were calculated for the target BCCZ in a set of stream sediments collected in 2008 in Ontario, Canada.
