It can result in various neurodevelopmental disorders, one of which is environmental hearing loss among children. This study aimed to assess the awareness and knowledge of cCMV among audiologists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in Saudi Arabia and to seek their perception of it. An online survey was conducted from May to June 2023, targeting participants through social media, and a descriptive and inferential analysis was performed. A total of 107 participants (31 audiologists and 76 SLPs) were enrolled in this study. Awareness about cCMV was significantly higher among audiologists (84%) compared to SLPs (49%) (p-value < 0.001). However, both groups exhibited poor cCMV knowledge, which was revealed by their low mean knowledge scores (6.8/14 for audiologists and 5.7/14 for SLPs). The difference between their mean scores was non-significant (p-value > 0.05). The majority of SLPs and audiologists agreed that it is crucial for them to learn more about cCMV to enrich their professional backgrounds. This study emphasized the necessity for cCMV education for audiologists and SLPs. Increased awareness and knowledge may allow them to be more mindful of cCMV symptoms and therefore provide enhanced service to their pediatric patients.Keywords: congenital cytomegalovirus, audiologist, speech-language pathologist, hearing loss, neurodevelopmental disorder

Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) represent the future of pest control, as they have the capacity to induce serious infections in insects, trigger epizootics, and effectively manage insect populations. The study aimed to identify and test indigenous EPF isolates against Tribolium confusum using soil samples from Northwestern and central Saudi Arabia. Galleria mellonella larvae were used as insect bait to collect EPF from soil samples from date palm groves, fruit groves, and maise fields. Only 27.3% of soil samples tested positive for palm grove-originating EPFs. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) identified the cultured fungi as Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana. Tribolium confusum pathogenicity was assessed using nine local fungal isolates. Different fungus isolates were tested for their pathogenicity on larval and adult T. confusum. The results showed that M. anisopliae MaSA-2, MaSA-3, and MaSA-4 had infection rates of 85%, 85%, and 75%, respectively, in last-instar T. confusum larvae and 5%, 10%, and 20% in adults within seven days. On the other hand, B. bassiana BbSA-4 showed a 100% infection rate in T. confusum larvae, while BbSA-5, BbSA-6, BbSA-7, BbSA-8, and BbSA-9 had infection rates of 70%, 80%, 80%, 75%, and 95%, respectively. In terms of adult mortality rates, B. bassiana BbSA-4, BbSA-5, BbSA-6, BbSA-7, BbSA-8, and BbSA-9 had rates of 25%, 35%, 35%, 20%, 20%, and 40%, respectively. The research findings show that indigenous B. bassiana and M. anisopliae fungus isolates successfully eliminated T. confusum larvae, although their effectiveness against adults was limited.

The growth of IoT applications has revolutionized sectors like security and home automation but raised concerns about data breaches due to device limitations. This research proposes a novel substitution box and cryptographic scheme designed to secure data transmission in IoT devices like smartphones and smartwatches. The proposed research has two phases: (I) generation of a substitution box (S-box) which is proposed by dividing phase space into 256 regions (0–255) using a random initial value and control parameter for the Piecewise Linear Chaotic Map (PWLCM), iterated multiple times, and (ii) a new encryption scheme, which is proposed by employing advanced cryptographic techniques such as bit-plane extraction, diffusion, and a three-stage scrambling process (multiround, multilayer, and recursive). Scrambled data is substituted using multiple S-boxes, followed by XOR operations with random image bit-planes to generate pre-ciphertext. Finally, quantum encryption operations, including Hadamard, CNOT, and phase gates, are applied to produce the fully encrypted image. The research evaluates the robustness of the proposed S-box and encryption scheme through experimental analyses, including nonlinearity, strict avalanche criterion (SAC), linear approximation probability (LAP), bit independence criterion (BIC), key space, entropy, correlation, energy, and histogram variance. The proposed approach demonstrates an impressive statistical performance with key metrics such as nonlinearity of 108.75, SAC of 0.5010, LAP of 0.0903, BIC of 110.65, a key space exceeding 2100, entropy of 7.9998, correlation of 0.0001, and energy of 0.0157. Furthermore, the proposed encryption scheme can encrypt a plaintext image of size 256 × 256 within one second which demonstrates its suitability for IoT devices that require fast computation.

Additive manufacturing (AM), shows promising advancements in layer-based modeling displaying its potential for substantial waste reduction. Out of all the AM methods, the most cost-effective and popular choice for prototyping and making customized parts is fused deposition modeling (FDM). This research investigates how various FDM process parameters specifically layer thickness, raster angle, and printing speed affect the mechanical properties of 3D-printed PETG (polyethylene terephthalate glycol) specimens reinforced with carbon fiber (CF). Optimal settings, including a 0° raster angle, 0.2 mm layer thickness, and 40 mm/s printing speed, enhance both tensile and flexural strength due to improvement in material bonding and alignment. Interestingly, lower values for raster angle, layer thickness, and printing speed also lead to notable improvements in mechanical properties. Contour and interaction plots provide valuable insights into the significant impact of these parameters. The study also explores how different printing speeds influence the mechanical characteristics of CF-reinforced PETG specimens. Furthermore, the comparative analysis demonstrated that incorporating carbon fiber into recycled PET waste materials resulted in an approximately 30% increase in tensile strength. These findings imply that using CF with plastic waste in large-scale industries can pave the way for innovative solutions, enhancing performance and sustainability, especially in the automotive, and defence sectors.

Abstract Background The burden of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in high-risk pediatric patients remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to characterize pediatric RSV cases from January 2019 to December 2022 and assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on RSV burden and RSV-related outcomes. In addition, examining factors influencing RSV-related hospitalization. Methods This is a retrospective study that included pediatric patients (aged 14 and below) who presented at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia with RSV infection identified using real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction assays. Statistical analyses were performed using STATA. Results A total of 885 RSV cases were reported; (56.05%) were males and (43.95%) were females with a median age of 24 months [interquartile range (IQR): 11–60]. 534 (60.34%) required hospitalization. As for RSV seasonality, there was a significant increase in RSV prevalence following the COVID-19 pandemic, escalating from 205 cases in 2019 to 425 cases in 2022. The increase in 2022 was evident in January and persisted from September to December, reaching its peak during the months of October (20.70% − 88 cases) and November (32.00% − 136 cases). About (27.12%) of RSV infected children were medically free patients. Symptomatic patients exhibited various clinical manifestations, with ventilation necessary in (13.11%) of cases. Background: As of November 2023, twenty-four states, two territories, and DC have legalized marijuana for non-medical use, leading to concerns about its potential oral health effects. This study investigated the association between marijuana use and clinical dental outcomes among adults in the US. Methods: We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2015 to 2018 using a cross-sectional survey of non-institutionalized US civilians. Marijuana use was assessed among 18–59-year-old adults and categorized as never, former, or current frequent use. The dental outcomes included the prevalence of untreated coronal caries, root caries, and missing teeth. We employed logistic and negative binomial regressions to assess the crude and adjusted associations between marijuana use, dental caries, and tooth loss. Results: Of the 6,424 participants, 13.85% of US adults aged 18–59 years were current frequent marijuana users (21.67 million), with the highest prevalence among 18–29-year-olds (21.31%), males (17.54%), and non-Hispanic Black individuals (21.31%). Frequent marijuana users showed the highest prevalence of untreated coronal caries (33.4%). Before adjusting for socioeconomic confounders, current frequent marijuana users had 1.76 times higher odds of having teeth with coronal caries, whereas former frequent users had 1.47 times higher odds. However, the associations between marijuana use and all dental outcomes were attenuated after adjusting for socioeconomic confounders, tobacco use, and access to dental care. Conclusion: Although marijuana use was associated with worse dental health, socioeconomic factors, tobacco use, and access to dental care were more significant contributors to the prevalence of untreated dental caries and missing teeth than marijuana use alone.

In this study, the shielding properties of novel polymer composites, developed by integrating glycidyl methacrylate with nanoparticles of bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) and tungsten oxide (WO3), were explored. The ability of the composites to attenuate gamma radiation was evaluated by measuring the emissions from Ba-133, Co-60, Cs-137, and Na-22. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra were obtained for both the pure polymer glycidyl methacrylate and the samples containing nanostructures of Bi2O3, Bi2O3/WO3, and WO3, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyze the samples. The incorporation of Bi2O3 and WO3 nanoparticles into the polymer glycidyl methacrylate matrix significantly enhanced the composites' ability to attenuate gamma radiation, as demonstrated by the increased linear and mass attenuation coefficients. The results showed good agreement between the experiment and the XCOM database. The composites exhibited significant efficiency in attenuating lower-energy gamma rays, which is particularly advantageous in the medical and nuclear industries.

SUMMARY: The current feeding study was designed to investigate the influence of naringenin dietary supplementation on growth performance, carcass traits, blood biochemistry, immunity, antioxidant responses, and the cecal microbiota of growing Japanese quails. Two hundred 1-wk-old Japanese quails with an average body weight of 28.02 ± 0.10 g were randomly clustered into 5 groups with 5 replicates each (n = 40 chicks/treatments & 8 chicks/replicate). The first group was received the basal diet (BD) without naringenin supplementation and considered the control group. Whereas, the naringenin-treated groups were fed on BD supplemented with naringenin at 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, and 2.00 g/kg diet. Regarding the antimicrobial activity of naringenin, the results displayed growth inhibition zones increased with increasing levels of naringenin. The main findings included significant linear and quadratic increases in quail's body weight and body gain with marked improvement of FCR (P < 0.05) without obvious alterations in carcass traits (P > 0.05). Moreover, dietary treatment with naringenin distinctly improved quail's hematology and biochemistry with prominent hypolipidemic effects assured by the significant lowering of cholesterol, TG, LDL, and VLDL. The levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), reduced glutathione (GSH), immunoglobulins (IgA, IgM, and IgG), complement 3, and lysozyme were increased with naringenin supplementation. The presence of naringenin in quail's diet significantly reduced the presence of different microbial populations in the cecum of growing quails. Net profit and economic efficiency were improved with naringenin supplementation when compared to control. Therefore, naringenin could be effectively included in quail's nutrition as a promising feed additive to improve quail's health and overall performance.

Background: This study focused on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which secrete important enzymes in medical and pharmaceutical applications and are isolated from clinical samples. One of these enzymes is L-methioninase, the most desirable enzyme in the medical and industrial fields today since it converted L-methionine into methanethiol, ammonia, and alpha-ketobutyrate. Objectives: Evaluated the optimum conditions of L-methioninase production and then purified it. Methods: Pseudomonas samples were identified by microscopic and biochemical tests and confirmed with the VITEK2 system. After the L-methioninase production was examined, the optimal conditions for the production of L-methioninase (MGL) were established using clinical samples of P. aeruginosa. Additionally, MGL was purified from the supernatant of P.aeruginosa using ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-cellulose, and Sephadex G150 accordingly. Results: There were 33 isolates of P.aeruginosa according to microscopic characteristics and biochemical tests, followed by the VITEK2 system to ensure identification. The optimization conditions were achieved when supplement media with sucrose 1% w\v, casein 1% w\v, pH 7, temperature 37oC, and incubation for 48hrs within the specific activity of 1.6, 3.3, 3.4, 3.4, and 3.5U\mg protein, respectively, and 4.6 fold the amount of the purified enzyme as compared to the crude enzyme. A single 55 kDa band on the SDS-PAGE indicates the enzyme is purified. Conclusions: P.aeruginosa can be an efficient source of L-methioninase, and this enzyme had better and higher specific activity after applying optimum conditions for it and purifying it.

Objective: The red palm weevil (RPW), is one of the most threatening pests of date palm trees worldwide, causing significant economic losses annually for date palm growers, both globally and in the Middle East, including Saudi Arabia. The primary objective of this research was to assess the insecticide market in Saudi Arabia, test various insecticides claimed to be effective against RPW, and evaluate their efficacy in laboratory settings. This evaluation aims to inform further trials under field conditions. Methods: Six insecticides, including imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, fipronil, emamectin benzoate, deltamethrin, and fenitrothion, were tested to assess their toxicity against red palm weevil 8th instar larvae by diet incorporation under laboratory conditions. The insecticides were applied according to the manufacturer’s recommendations with dosages of 1000 µl, 0.20 µl, 7.5 µl, 0.25 µl, 0.25 µl, and 0.5 µl for imidacloprid, thiamethoxam, fipronil, emamectin benzoate, deltamethrin, and fenitrothion, respectively. Results: The results revealed that all tested insecticides exhibited 100 % mortality against 8th instar RPW larvae, with the exception of deltamethrin. However, the time required to achieve this mortality varied. Fenitrothion caused 100 % mortality after 72 h, while thiamethoxam, imidacloprid, and fipronil caused 100 % mortality after 96 h. Emamectin benzoate and deltamethrin resulted in 100 % and 93 % mortality, respectively, after 10 days. The variability in mortality rates may be attributed to differences in their active ingredients, which show varying levels of lethality. In conclusion, all tested insecticides showed effectiveness against RPW larvae and represent viable options for controlling this pest in date palm orchards in Saudi Arabia.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary blood condition characterized by abnormal hemoglobin, leading to chronic hemolysis and vaso-occlusive complications. Caregivers of children with SCD often experience significant distress, akin to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study aimed to measure the degree of trauma and post-traumatic growth among parents (caregivers) of children with SCD in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A total of 294 primary caregivers were recruited for this study, through direct phone calls and online outreach using contact information obtained from their primary treating physician in Maternity and Children Hospitals and the Hereditary Blood Diseases Center in Al-Ahsa. Inclusion criteria required caregivers not to be receiving professional mental health care and to have a child with SCD below the age of 18. Results indicate that caregiver gender significantly affected IESR scores, with mothers reporting higher scores than fathers. Family income had a significant effect on IESR as well. In terms of education level, higher-educated caregivers were less likely to experience severe trauma. Significant differences emerged between online and phone interview participants, with online respondents reporting higher post-traumatic growth and higher trauma levels. This study represents a crucial step in understanding the challenges faced by caregivers of children with SCD in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. However, the study has limitations, including a substantial portion of the sample being from a single clinic and a cross-sectional design.

Discourse markers, as words or phrases, play a significant role in promoting coherent segments of discourse. This paper investigates the use of discourse markers (DMs) in newspaper articles. By applying Fraser's framework, this study aims at investigating the functions and positions of DM "but" (English) and its equivalent "lakin" (Arabic) in newspaper articles written by native and nonnative speakers of English and Saudi and Egyptian speakers of Arabic. It also highlights the similarities and differences in the functions and positions of DMs "but" and "lakin." This quantitative study adopts a corpus-based approach. The data consist of articles collected from 12 newspapers categorized as: Arabic language newspapers published in Saudi Arabia ("Alriyadh," "Al Jazirah," "AlHayat") and Egypt ("Al-Ahram," "Al-Gomhuria," "Eltahrir") and English language newspapers published in Saudi Arabia ("Arab News," "Saudi Gazette," "Asharq Al-Awsat") and the USA ("Washington Post," "The New York Times," "USA TODAY"). Findings demonstrate, first, that DM "but" is used frequently as a confirmation or addition marker by both native and non-native speakers. However, second, "lakin," functions as the primary correction DM in standard Arabic. Moreover, third, the native Arabic speakers mostly share the same functions of using "lakin" despite different dialects they have. This study also reveals that "lakin" can be found only in the medial position, whereas, "but" is found in the initial and medial position. It concludes that DMs "but" and "lakin" evidence that functions of DMs proposed by Fraser are universal and they could be generalized.

Objectives There is strong evidence that mobility-assistive technologies improve occupational performance, social participation, educational and employment access and overall quality of life in people with disabilities. However, people with disabilities still face barriers in accessing mobility products and related services. This review aims to summarise and synthesise: (1) theories, models and frameworks that have been used to understand mobility-assistive technology access, (2) determinants of access and (3) gaps in knowledge.Design A scoping review using the five-step framework by Arksey and O’Malley.Data sources We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature and SCOPUS databases for publications published between 2000 and 2024. We searched for articles published up to 20 March 2024.Eligibility criteria We included English-published literature in peer-reviewed journals that reported (a) barriers to the provision of mobility-assistive technologies, (b) including at least one theory, model or framework and (c) between 2000 and 2024.Data extraction and synthesis We extracted the study characteristics, theories, models, framework usage, research recommendations, key findings on mobility-assistive technology barriers and theoretical propositions. We conduct a theoretical synthesis guided by Turner’s approach.Results We included 18 articles that used 8 theories, models and frameworks, synthesised into 9 propositions. The synthesised theory emphasises that mobility is essential for human flourishing, and that certain health conditions may impose restrictions on mobility. This impact can be alleviated by two direct determinants: (1) the provision of suitable services and (2) their comprehensive provision. Policies and costs influence these services indirectly. Environmental and personal factors also affect the use of these services. Ineffectively addressing these determinants can limit access to mobility-assistive technologies and subsequent disabilities.Conclusion Our synthetic model describes the logic of providing evidence-based mobility-assistive technologies, and we identify the determinants of access that can act as targets for future work to improve the provision of mobility-assistive technologies.

In this work, we developed a highly sensitive liquid scintillator (LS) using Coumarin 450 (C450) dye to detect gamma ray and localize Compton edges (CEs). C450 exhibited absorption and fluorescence peaks at 350 nm and 407 nm, respectively, in toluene, at an optimized concentration (3 mM). The LS, contained in a standard glass container (1.8 cm diameter, 3.6 cm height), showed an emission peak in the blue region, matching the high quantum yield of typical PMT photocathodes. We exposed the LS to various gamma radiation sources (137Cs, 60Co, and 22Na), recording responses for different PMT voltages. Gaussian fitting of pulse height distribution spectrum allowed CE identification at the half-height for all PMT voltages. We compared theoretical and experimental results to a GEANT4-simulated detector, obtaining CE positions for radiation interactions and scintillation photon transport. The calibrated GEANT4 simulation was compared to experimental spectra to locate the Compton edges.

Although vaccination against HPV is available, global HPV vaccination rates remain low.Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the awareness and knowledge of the HPV vaccine and to identify predictors associated with vaccine hesitancy among health college students at King Saud University, Saudi Arabia.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was distributed during December 2022 to students enrolled in health colleges. The survey link was randomly distributed via social media platforms and in-person interactions. The number of participants was 405 including both males and females. The data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The correct response rate for all knowledge items was calculated, and they were stratified by gender and college. The association of vaccine hesitancy with sociodemographic characteristics was examined using logistic regression analysis.Results: The study found that approximately half of the students (49.9%) were aware of the HPV vaccine. However, only a small percentage of students answered all to all HPV knowledge items correctly. Additionally, only a small proportion (5.2%) reported receiving the vaccine. The overall HPV vaccine hesitancy was 59.1% (43.9% for female and 75.9% for male). The most common reasons for vaccine hesitancy was not knowing enough about it. Males were two times more likely than females to believe that they did not need the HPV vaccine. The odds for HPV vaccine hesitancy were greater among males and younger age groups compared to females and older age groups.Conclusion: This study underscores the importance of implementing university-wide interventions and educational campaigns to enhance awareness and knowledge of the HPV vaccine.Keywords: HPV vaccine, vaccine awareness, vaccine hesitancy, college students
