Search

We present the design of a continuous-wave, highly sensitive optical spectrometer for millimeter-wave frequencies between 50 and 1000 GHz. The spectrometer uses photomixing of near-infrared light to generate radiation in a wide frequency range, and the absorbed optical power is determined directly through measurements of the sample temperature. This enables relative sensitivities of up to $10^6$ for the sample absorption coefficient below liquid-helium temperatures, suitable for measurements on highly reflective samples. The instrument is also compatible with high magnetic fields. In order to validate its performance, we measure the ferromagnetic resonance in the Mott insulator YTiO$_3$, the electron spin resonance in a standard free-radical reference compound, and the antiferromagnetic resonance in a van der Waals magnetic material., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

The field of research on magnetic van der Waals compounds -- a special subclass of quasi-two-dimensional materials -- is currently rapidly expanding due to the relevance of these compounds to fundamental research where they serve as a playground for the investigation of different models of quantum magnetism and also in view of their unique magneto-electronic and magneto-optical properties pertinent to novel technological applications. The Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) spectroscopy plays an important role in the exploration of the rich magnetic behavior of van der Waals compounds due to its high sensitivity to magnetic anisotropies and unprecedentedly high energy resolution that altogether enable one to obtain thorough insights into the details of the spin structure in the magnetically ordered state and the low-energy spin dynamics in the ordered and paramagnetic phases. Single-crystal growth, magnetic properties, and magnetocaloric effect of the $S = 3/2$ kagome ferromagnet Li$_9$Cr$_3$(P$_2$O$_7$)$_3$(PO$_4$)$_2$ (trigonal, space group: $P\bar{3}c1$) are reported. Magnetization data suggest dominant ferromagnetic intra-plane coupling with a weak anisotropy and the onset of ferromagnetic ordering at $T_{\rm C} \simeq 2.6$ K. Microscopic analysis reveals a very small ratio of interlayer to intralayer ferromagnetic couplings ($J_{\perp}/J \simeq 0.02$). Electron spin resonance data suggest the presence of short-range correlations above $T_{\rm C}$ and confirms quasi-two-dimensional character of the spin system. A large magnetocaloric effect characterized by isothermal entropy change of $-\Delta S_{\rm m}\simeq 31$ J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ and adiabatic temperature change of $-\Delta T_{\rm ad}\simeq 9$ K upon a field sweep of 7 T is observed around $T_{\rm C}$. This leads to a large relative cooling power of $RCP \simeq 284$ J kg$^{-1}$. The large magnetocaloric effect, together with negligible hysteresis render Li$_9$Cr$_3$(P$_2$O$_7$)$_3$(PO$_4$)$_2$ a promising material for magnetic refrigeration at low temperatures. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant $K \simeq -7.42 \times 10^4$ erg cm$^{-3}$ implies that the compound is an easy-plane type ferromagnet with the hard axis normal to the $ab$-plane, consistent with the magnetization data., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures

We report the detailed high-field and high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) spectroscopic study of the single-crystalline van der Waals compounds Mn$_{2}$P$_{2}$S$_{6}$ and MnNiP$_{2}$S$_{6}$. Analysis of magnetic excitations shows that in comparison to Mn$_{2}$P$_{2}$S$_{6}$ increasing the Ni content yields a larger magnon gap in the ordered state and a larger g-factor value and its anisotropy in the paramagnetic state. The studied compounds are found to be strongly anisotropic having each the unique ground state and type of magnetic order. Stronger deviation of the g-factor from the free electron value in the samples containing Ni suggests that the anisotropy of the exchange is an important contributor to the stabilization of a certain type of magnetic order with particular anisotropy. At temperatures above the magnetic order, we have analyzed the spin-spin correlations resulting in a development of slowly fluctuating short-range order. They are much stronger pronounced in MnNiP$_{2}$S$_{6}$ compared to Mn$_{2}$P$_{2}$S$_{6}$. The enhanced spin fluctuations in MnNiP$_{2}$S$_{6}$ are attributed to the competition of different types of magnetic order. Finally, the analysis of the temperature dependent critical behavior of the magnon gaps below the ordering temperature in Mn$_{2}$P$_{2}$S$_{6}$ suggests that the character of the spin wave excitations in this compound undergoes a field induced crossover from a 3D-like towards 2D XY regime.

We present a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) study of rare-earth titanates derived from the spin-1/2 Mott insulator YTiO$_3$. Measurements of single-crystalline samples of (Y,Ca,La)TiO$_3$ in a wide range of isovalent substitution (La) and hole doping (Ca) reveal several unusual features in the paramagnetic state of these materials. $^{89}$Y NMR demonstrates a clear discrepancy between the static and dynamic local magnetic susceptibilities, with deviations from Curie-Weiss behavior far above the Curie temperature $T_C$. No significant changes are observed close to $T_C$, but a suppression of fluctuations is detected in the NMR spin-lattice relaxation time at temperatures of about $3\times T_C$. Additionally, the nuclear spin-spin relaxation rate shows an unusual peak in dependence on temperature for all samples. ESR of the unpaired Ti electron shows broad resonance lines at all temperatures and substitution/doping levels, which we find to be caused by short electronic spin-lattice relaxation times. We model the relaxation as an Orbach process that involves a low-lying electronic excited state, which enables the determination of the excited-state gap from the temperature dependence of the ESR linewidths. We ascribe the small gap to Jahn-Teller splitting of the two lower Ti $t_{2g}$ orbitals. The value of the gap closely follows $T_C$ and is consistent with the temperatures at which deviations from Curie-Weiss fluctuations are observed in NMR. These results provide insight into the interplay between orbital and spin degrees of freedom in rare-earth titanates and indicate that full orbital degeneracy lifting is associated with ferromagnetic order.

We report a comprehensive study of the static susceptibility, high-field magnetization and high-frequency/high-magnetic field electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) spectroscopy of polycrystalline samples of the bismuth cobalt oxy-phosphate BiCoPO$_5$. This compound features a peculiar spin system that can be considered as antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains built of pairs of ferromagnetically coupled Co spins and interconnected in all three spatial directions. It was previously shown that BiCoPO$_5$ orders antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N} \approx 10$ K and this order can be continuously suppressed by magnetic field towards the critical value $\mu_0H_{\rm c} \approx 15$ T. In our experiments we find strongly enhanced magnetic moments and spectroscopic $g$ factors as compared to the expected spin-only values, suggesting a strong contribution of orbital magnetism for the Co$^{2+}$ ions. This is quantitatively confirmed by ab initio quantum chemical calculations. Within the AFM ordered phase, we observe a distinct field-induced magnetic phase transition. Its critical field rises to $\sim 6$ T at $T \ll T_{\rm N}$. The HF-ESR spectra recorded at $T\ll T_{\rm N}$ are very rich comprising up to six resonance modes possibly of the multimagnonic nature that soften towards the critical region around 6 T. Interestingly, we find that the Co moments are not yet fully polarized at $H_{\rm c}$ which supports a theoretical proposal identifying $H_{\rm c}$ as the quantum critical point for the transition of the spin system in BiCoPO$_5$ to the quantum disordered state at stronger fields.

In this work we report a detailed ESR spectroscopic study of the single-crystalline samples of the van der Waals compounds $M_{\text{2}}$P$_{\text{2}}$S$_{\text{6}}$ ($M_{\text{2}}$ = Mn$_{\text{2}}$, MnNi, Ni$_{\text{2}}$), performed at an excitation frequency of 9.56 GHz, in a broad range of temperatures above the magnetic order, and at different orientations of the magnetic field with respect to the sample. Analyzing temperature and angular dependences of the resonance field and of the linewidth of the Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ compound we have observed a significant change of the spin dynamics from the dominance of the 3D-like fluctuations close to the magnetic order to a relative increase of the 2D-like spin fluctuations at higher temperatures. Such a behavior, which is opposite to the development of the low-D signatures in the previously studied Cr$_{\text{2}}$Ge$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{6}}$ compound, can be explained by the difference in the type of magnetic order in Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ and Cr$_{\text{2}}$Ge$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{6}}$. On the other hand, MnNiP$_2$S$_6$ compound exhibits angular dependences of the linewidth typical for the system with 3D-like spin correlations in the whole measurement temperature range, however the 2D-like correlations can be seen in the temperature dependences of the resonance field and the linewidth. Ni$_2$P$_2$S$_6$, in turn, does not show any 2D signatures. This suggests that varying the Ni content in (Mn$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ one can control the exchange interaction, possibly also in the third dimension.

The quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Ni$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ belongs to the family of magnetic van der Waals compounds that provides a rich material base for the realization of fundamental models of quantum magnetism in low dimensions. Here, we report high-frequency/high-magnetic field electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals of Ni$_2$P$_2$S$_6$. The results enable one to reliably determine the positive, "easy"-plane type of the single ion anisotropy of the Ni$^{2+}$ ions with the upper limit of its magnitude $\lesssim 0.7$ meV. The resonance response reveals strongly anisotropic spin fluctuations setting in shortly above the N\'eel temperature $T_{\rm N} = 158$ K and extending in the antiferromagnetically ordered state down to low temperatures. There, a low-energy magnon excitation gapped from the ground state by only $\sim 1$ meV was found. This magnon mode may explain unusual low temperature relaxation processes observed in a latest nuclear magnetic resonance experiments and together with the estimate of the single ion anisotropy they should enable setting up a realistic spin model for an accurate description of magnetic properties of Ni$_2$P$_2$S$_6$.

We report a high frequency/high magnetic field electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) spectroscopy study in the sub-THz frequency domain of the two representatives of the family of magnetic topological insulators (MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$)(Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$)$_{n}$ with $n = 0$ and 1. The HF-ESR measurements in the magnetically ordered state at a low temperature of $T = 4$ K combined with the calculations of the resonance modes showed that the spin dynamics in MnBi$_{\text{4}}$Te$_{\text{7}}$ is typical for an anisotropic easy-axis type ferromagnet (FM) whereas MnBi$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{4}}$ demonstrates excitations of an anisotropic easy-axis type antiferromagnet (AFM). However, by applying the field stronger than a threshold value $\sim 6$ T we observed in MnBi$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{4}}$ a crossover from the AFM resonance modes to the FM modes which properties are very similar to the ferromagnetic response of MnBi$_{\text{4}}$Te$_{\text{7}}$. We attribute this remarkably unusual effect unexpected for a canonical easy-axis AFM, which, additionally, can be accurately reproduced by numerical calculations of the excitation modes, to the closeness of the strength of the AFM exchange and magnetic anisotropy energies which appears to be a very specific feature of this compound. Our experimental data evidences that the spin dynamics of the magnetic building blocks of these compounds, the Mn-based septuple layers (SLs), is inherently ferromagnetic featuring persisting short-range FM correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature as soon as the SLs get decoupled either by introducing a nonmagnetic quintuple interlayer, as in MnBi$_{\text{4}}$Te$_{\text{7}}$, or by applying a moderate magnetic field, as in MnBi$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{4}}$, which may have an effect on the surface topological band structure of these compounds.

Triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets are prototypes of geometric frustration, even if for nearest-neighbor interactions quantum fluctuations are not usually strong enough to destroy magnetic ordering: stronger frustration is required to stabilize a spin-liquid phase. On the basis of static magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements, we demonstrate the emergence of ${\tilde{j}_{\text{eff}}=\frac12}$ moments in the triangular-lattice magnet Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$. These moments are subject to an extra source of frustration that causes magnetic correlations to set in far above both the magnetic ordering and Weiss temperatures. Corroborating the $\tilde{j}_{\text{eff}}=\frac12$ ground state, theory identifies ferromagnetic Kitaev exchange anisotropy as additional frustrating agent, altogether putting forward Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$ as a promising Kitaev spin-liquid material., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures (published version) + supplemental material (4 pages)

The recent discovery of magnetic topological insulators has opened new avenues to explore exotic states of matter that can emerge from the interplay between topological electronic states and magnetic degrees of freedom, be it ordered or strongly fluctuating. Motivated by the effects that the dynamics of the magnetic moments can have on the topological surface states, we investigate the magnetic fluctuations across the (MnBi$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{4}}$)(Bi$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{3}}$)$_{\text{n}}$ family. Our paramagnetic electron spin resonance experiments reveal contrasting Mn spin dynamics in different compounds, which manifests in a strongly anisotropic Mn spin relaxation in MnBi$_{\text{2}}$Te$_{\text{4}}$ while being almost isotropic in MnBi$_{\text{4}}$Te$_{\text{7}}$. Our density-functional calculations explain these striking observations in terms of the sensitivity of the local electronic structure to the Mn spin-orientation, and indicate that the anisotropy of the magnetic fluctuations can be controlled by the carrier density, which may directly affect the electronic topological surface states.

We report the results of the pressure-dependent measurements of the static magnetization and of the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ to address the properties of the ferromagnetic phase of this quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals magnet. The static magnetic data at hydrostatic pressures up to 3.4 GPa reveal a gradual suppression of ferromagnetism in terms of a reduction of the critical transition temperature, a broadening of the transition width and an increase of the field necessary to fully saturate the magnetization $M_{\rm s}$. The value of $M_{\rm s} \simeq 3\mu_{\rm B}$/Cr remains constant within the error bars up to a pressure of 2.8 GPa. The anisotropy of the FMR signal continuously diminishes in the studied hydrostatic pressure range up to 2.39 GPa suggesting a reduction of the easy-axis type magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE). A quantitative analysis of the FMR data gives evidence that up to this pressure the MAE constant $K_{\rm U}$, although getting significantly smaller, still remains finite and positive, i.e. of the easy-axis type. Therefore, a recently discussed possibility of switching the sign of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ could only be expected at still higher pressures, if possible at all due to the observed weakening of the ferromagnetism under pressure. This circumstance may be of relevance for the design of strain-engineered functional heterostructures containing layers of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$.

We report a comprehensive high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance (ESR) study on single crystals of the van der Waals magnet CrCl$_3$. This material, although being known for quite a while, has received recent significant attention in a context of the use of van der Waals magnets in novel spintronic devices. Temperature-dependent measurements of the resonance fields were performed between 4 and 175 K and with the external magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the honeycomb planes of the crystal structure. These investigations reveal that the resonance line shifts from the paramagnetic resonance position already at temperatures well above the transition into a magnetically ordered state. Thereby the existence of ferromagnetic short-range correlations above the transition is established and the intrinsically two-dimensional nature of the magnetism in the title compound is proven. To study details of the magnetic anisotropies in the field-induced effectively ferromagnetic state at low temperatures, frequency-dependent ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements were conducted at 4 K. The observed anisotropy between the two magnetic-field orientations is analyzed by means of numerical simulations based on a phenomenological theory of FMR. These simulations are in excellent agreement with measured data if the shape anisotropy of the studied crystal is taken into account, while the magnetocrystalline anisotropy is found to be negligible in CrCl$_3$. Recently, several putative quantum spin liquid (QSL) states were discovered in ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ rare-earth based triangular-lattice antiferromagnets (TLAF) with the delafossite structure. A way to clarify the origin of the QSL state in these systems is to identify ways to tune them from the putative QSL state towards long-range magnetic order. Here, we introduce the Ce-based TLAF KCeS$_2$ and show via low-temperature specific heat and $\mu$SR investigations that it yields magnetic order below $T_{\mathrm N} = 0.38$ K despite the same delafossite structure. We identify a well separated ${\tilde S} = 1/2$ ground state for KCeS$_2$ from inelastic neutron scattering and embedded-cluster quantum chemical calculations. Magnetization and electron spin resonance measurements on single crystals indicate a strong easy-plane $g$~factor anisotropy, in agreement with the ab initio calculations. Finally, our specific-heat studies reveal an in-plane anisotropy of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram which may indicate anisotropic magnetic interactions in KCeS$_2$., Comment: submission to Scipost Physics

We report an experimental study of the static magnetization $M(H,T)$ and high-field electron spin resonance (ESR) of polycrystalline \MgGd, a representative member of the newly discovered class of the so-called tripod-kagome antiferromagnets where the isotropic Gd$^{3+}$ spins ($S = 7/2$) form a two-dimensional kagome spin-frustrated lattice. It follows from the analysis of the low-$T$ $M(H)$-curves that the Gd$^{3+}$ spins are coupled by a small isotropic antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange interaction $|J| \approx$ 0.3\,K. The $M(H,T)$-dependences measured down to 0.5\,K evidence a long-range AFM order at $T_{\text{N}} = 1.7$\,K and its rapid suppression at higher fields $\geq 4$\,T. ESR spectra measured in fields up to 15\,T are analyzed considering possible effects of demagnetizing fields, single-ion anisotropy and spin-spin correlations. While the demagnetization effects due to a large sample magnetization in high fields and its shape anisotropy become relevant at low temperatures, the broadening of the ESR line commencing already at $T\lesssim 30$\,K may indicate the onset of the spin-spin correlations far above the ordering temperature due to the geometrical spin frustration in this compound., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, 5 formulas

Combinations of non-trivial band topology and long-range magnetic order hold promise for realizations of novel spintronic phenomena, such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect and the topological magnetoelectric effect. Following theoretical advances material candidates are emerging. Yet, a compound with a band-inverted electronic structure and an intrinsic net magnetization remains unrealized. MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is a candidate for the first antiferromagnetic topological insulator and the progenitor of a modular (Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$(MnBi$_2$Te$_4$) series. For $n$ = 1, we confirm a non-stoichiometric composition proximate to MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and establish an antiferromagnetic state below 13 K followed by a state with net magnetization and ferromagnetic-like hysteresis below 5 K. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments and density-functional calculations reveal a topological surface state on the MnBi$_4$Te$_7$(0001) surface, analogous to the non-magnetic parent compound Bi$_2$Te$_3$. Our results render MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ as a band-inverted material with an intrinsic net magnetization and a complex magnetic phase diagram providing a versatile platform for the realization of different topological phases., Comment: Accepted to Phys. We report a comprehensive experimental investigation on the magnetic anisotropy in bulk single crystals of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$, a quasi-two-dimensional ferromagnet belonging to the family of magnetic layered transition metal trichalcogenides that have attracted recently a big deal of interest with regard to the fundamental and applied aspects of two-dimensional magnetism. For this purpose electron spin resonance (ESR) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements have been carried out over a wide frequency and temperature range. A gradual change in the angular dependence of the ESR linewidth at temperatures above the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ reveals the development of two-dimensional spin correlations in the vicinity of $T_{\rm c}$ thereby proving the intrinsically low-dimensional character of spin dynamics in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. Angular and frequency dependent measurements in the ferromagnetic phase clearly show an easy-axis type anisotropy of this compound. Furthermore, these experiments are compared with simulations based on a phenomenological approach, which takes into account results of static magnetization measurements as well as high temperature $g$ factors obtained from ESR spectroscopy in the paramagnetic phase. As a result the determined magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy density (MAE) $K_U$ is $(0.48 \pm 0.02) \times10^6$ erg/cm$^3$. This analysis is complemented by density functional calculations which yield the experimental MAE value for a particular value of the electronic correlation strength $U$. Topologically ordered states of matter are generically characterized by excitations with quantum number fractionalization. A prime example is the spin liquid realized in Kitaev's honeycomb-lattice compass model where spin-flip excitations fractionalize into Majorana fermions and Ising gauge fluxes. While numerous compounds have been proposed to be proximate to such a spin-liquid phase, clear-cut evidence for fractionalized excitations is lacking. Here we employ microwave absorption measurements to study the low-energy excitations in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ over a wide range of frequencies, magnetic fields, and temperatures, covering in particular the vicinity of the field-driven quantum phase transition where long-range magnetic order disappears. In addition to conventional gapped magnon modes we find a highly unusual broad continuum characteristic of fractionalization which -- most remarkably -- extends to energies below the lowest sharp mode and to temperatures significantly higher than the ordering temperature, and develops a gap of a nontrivial origin in strong magnetic fields. Our results unravel the signatures of fractionalized excitations in $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$ and pave the way to a more complete understanding of the Kitaev spin liquid and its instabilities., Comment: revised version

Modern theories of quantum magnetism predict exotic multipolar states in weakly interacting strongly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg chains with ferromagnetic nearest neighbor (NN) inchain exchange in high magnetic fields. Experimentally these states remained elusive so far. Here we report the evidence for a long-sought magnetic field-induced nematic state arising above a field of $\sim 13$ T in the edge-sharing chain cuprate LiSbCuO$_4$ $\equiv$ LiCuSbO$_4$. This interpretation is based on the observation of a field induced spin-gap in the measurements of the $^7$Li NMR spin relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ as well as a contrasting field-dependent power-law behavior of $T_1^{-1}$ vs. $T$ and is further supported by static magnetization and ESR data. An underlying theoretical microscopic approach favoring a nematic scenario is based essentially on the NN XYZ exchange anisotropy within a model for frustrated spin-1/2 chains. It is investigated by the DMRG technique. The employed exchange parameters are justified qualitatively by electronic structure calculations for LiCuSbO$_4$.

In this work we introduce a new method of a ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) detection from thin, nm-size, films. Our setup is based on the commercial piezo-cantilever, used for atomic force microscopy. It has an option to rotate the sample in the magnetic field and it operates up to the high microwave frequencies of 160 GHz. Using our cantilever based FMR spectrometer we have investigated a set of samples, namely quasi-bulk and 84 nm film Co$_2$FeAl$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$ samples, 16 nm Fe$_{50}$Ni$_{50}$ film and 150 nm Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ film. The high frequency ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) response from an extremely thin Fe$_{50}$Ni$_{50}$ film we have fitted with the conventional model for the magnetization dynamics. The cantilever detected FMR experiments on Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ film reveal an inability of the conventional model to fit frequency and angular dependences with the same set of parameters, which suggests that one has to take into account much more complicated nature of the magnetization precession in the Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ at low temperatures and high frequencies. Moreover, the complicated dynamics of the magnetization apparent in all investigated samples is suggested by a drastic increase of the linewidths with increasing microwave frequency, and by an emergence of the second line with an opposite angular dependence., Comment: Submitted to Journal of Magnetic Resonance

We report on broad-band electron spin resonance measurements performed within the itinerant ferromagnetic phase of $R$CoPO ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd and Sm). We reveal that the $R$ substitution is highly effective in gradually introducing a sizeable easy-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy within the Co sublattice. We explain our results in terms of a subtle interplay of structural effects and of indirect interactions between the $f$ and $d$ orbitals from $R$ and Co, respectively., Comment: 12 pages, 15 figures

We report a high-field electron spin resonance study in the sub-THz frequency domain of a single crystal of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ that has been recently proposed as a prototypical spin-orbital Mott insulator. In the antiferromagnetically (AFM) ordered state with noncollinear spin structure that occurs in this material at $T_{\rm N} \approx 240$ K we observe both the "low" frequency mode due to the precession of weak ferromagnetic moments arising from a spin canting, and the "high" frequency modes due to the precession of the AFM sublattices. Surprisingly, the energy gap for the AFM excitations appears to be very small, amounting to 0.83 meV only. This suggests a rather isotropic Heisenberg dynamics of interacting Ir$^{4+}$ effective spins despite the spin-orbital entanglement in the ground state., Comment: revised version

Type, degree and evolution of structural order are important aspects for understanding and controlling the properties of highly spin polarized Heusler compounds, in particular with respect to the optimal film growth procedure. In this work, we compare the structural order and the local magnetic properties revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with the macroscopic properties of thin Co$_2$FeAl$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$ Heusler films with varying thickness. A detailed analysis of the measured NMR spectra presented in this paper enables us to find a very high degree of $L2_1$ type ordering up to 81% concomitantly with excess Fe of 8 to 13% at the expense of Al and Si. We show, that the formation of certain types of order do not only depend on the thermodynamic phase diagrams as in bulk samples, but that the kinetic control may contribute to the phase formation in thin films. It is an exciting finding that Co$_2$FeAl$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$ can form an almost ideal $L2_1$ structure in films though with a considerable amount of Fe-Al/Si off-stoichiometry. Moreover, the very good quality of the films as demonstrated by our NMR study suggests that the novel technique of off-axis sputtering technique used to grow the films sets stage for the optimized performance of Co$_2$FeAl$_{0.5}$Si$_{0.5}$ in spintronic devices., Comment: Published in Phys. We present experimental XMLD spectra measured on epitaxial (001)-oriented thin Co$_{2}$FeSi films, which are rich in features and depend sensitively on the degree of atomic order and interdiffusion from capping layers. Al- and Cr-capped films with different degrees of atomic order were prepared by DC magnetron sputtering by varying the deposition temperatures. The local structural properties of the film samples were additionally investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The XMLD spectra of the different samples show clear and uniform trends at the $L_{3,2}$ edges. The Al-capped samples show similar behavior as previous measured XMLD spectra of Co$_2$FeSi$_{0.6}$Al$_{0.4}$. Thus, we assume that during deposition Al atoms are being implanted into the subsurface of Co$_{2}$FeSi. Such an interdiffusion is not observed for the corresponding Cr-capped films, which makes Cr the material of choice for capping Co$_{2}$FeSi films. We report stronger XMLD intensities at the $L_{3,2}$ Co and Fe egdes for films with a higher saturation magnetization. Additionally, we compare the spectra with \textit{ab initio} predictions and obtain a reasonably good agreement. Furthermore, we were able to detect an XMCD signal at the Si $L$-edge, indicating the presence of a magnetic moment at the Si atoms.

We report a detailed investigation of GdO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$FeAs (x = 0, 0.07 and 0.14) samples by means of high-field/high-frequency electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) together with measurements of thermodynamic and transport properties. The parent GdOFeAs compound exhibits Fe long-range magnetic order below 128 K, whereas both doped samples do not show such order and are superconducting with T$_c$ = 20 K (x = 0.07) and T$_c$ = 45 K (x = 0.14). The Gd$^{3+}$ HF-ESR reveals an appreciable exchange coupling between Gd and Fe moments, through which the static magnetic order is clearly seen in the parent compound. Owing to this coupling, HF-ESR can probe sensitively the evolution of the magnetism in the FeAs planes upon F doping. It is found that in both superconducting samples, where the Fe long-range order is absent, there are short-range, static on the ESR time scale magnetic correlations between Fe spins. Their occurrence on a large doping scale may be indicative of the ground states' coexistence., Comment: Published in PRB

The ability of bridging thiophenolate groups to transmit magnetic exchange interactions between paramagnetic Ni(II) ions has been examined. For this purpose, dinuclear and trinuclear Ni(II)-complexes were prepared and fully characterized by IR- and UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, static magnetization measurements and high-field electron spin resonance (HF-ESR). We compare structural and magnetic properties of the two Ni(II)-complexes and discuss the relationships between magnetic interactions and chemical bonding., Comment: 10 pages

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS), electron spin (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements were employed to establish the origin of the strong magnetic signal in lightly hole-doped La_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_3, x=0.002. Both, INS and ESR low temperature spectra show intense excitations with large effective g-factors ~10-18. NMR data indicate the creation of extended magnetic clusters. From the Q-dependence of the INS magnetic intensity we conclude that the observed anomalies are caused by the formation of octahedrally shaped spin-state polarons comprising seven Co ions., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

Electron spin resonance and magnetization data in magnetic fields up to 55 T of a novel multicenter paramagnetic molecular complex [L_2Ni_4(N_3)(O_2C Ada)_4](Cl O_4) are reported. In this compound, four Ni centers each having a spin S = 1 are coupled in a single molecule via bridging ligands (including a \mu_4-azide) which provide paths for magnetic exchange. Analysis of the frequency and temperature dependence of the ESR signals yields the relevant parameters of the spin Hamiltonian, in particular the single ion anisotropy gap and the g factor, which enables the calculation of the complex energy spectrum of the spin states in a magnetic field. The experimental results give compelling evidence for tuning the ground state of the molecule by magnetic field from a nonmagnetic state at small fields to a magnetic one in strong fields owing to the spin level crossing at a field of ~25 T., Comment: revised version, accepted for publication in Physical Review B
