Abstract

Within this online study we want to investigate how task-relevance of ordinality contributes to the SNARC effect for ordinal sequences. Is the prior learning of a stimuli set or the activation of the set while task execution decisive for the SNARC effect?

Abstract

Conservative treatment of anterior shoulder luxation includes immobilization in internal rotation. This has been increasingly debated, but imaging techniques in supine position do not reflect the influence of gravity. To examine glenoid labrum dynamics, the shoulders of 15 healthy subjects were imaged in standing position at different (0, 15, 30) degrees of external rotation using the Upright MRI. The functional length of the anterior labrum was measured. Due to an increasing tension of the anterior capsule, functional labrum length increased the more, the more the humerus was externally rotated. The results underline the usefulness of the Upright MRI and support the concept of immobilization in the position of external rotation.

Abstract

One hundred and ten stimulation studies with three-dimensional positron emission tomography (PET) and coregistered magnetic resonance images in 71 subjects using six language stimulation paradigms were performed. At a threshold of 10% signal increase or more in an area comprising several slices, left Broca's area was activated most consistently in 88 to 100% of right handers with verb generation tasks, with auditory as well as visual input, and with spoken as well as silent verb production. Significant asymmetry was also seen in inferior temporal gyrus. Thus, this type of task is particularly suited for investigation of language lateralization and for localization of the anterior language center. Object naming and semantic judgement tasks produced somewhat less intense and more variable activations. Simple word repetition mainly activated the superior temporal cortex, including and adjacent to Heschl's gyrus. Aphasia tended to increase rather than decrease activation responses, predominantly in the right hemisphere. Activations were also observed in the immediate vicinity of brain tumors. Thus, such PET activation studies cannot only be performed in normal subjects, but are also clinically feasible and yield consistent results in patients.
