The Athena mission entered a redefinition phase in July 2022, driven by the imperative to reduce the mission cost at completion for the European Space Agency below an acceptable target, while maintaining the flagship nature of its science return. This notably called for a complete redesign of the X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) cryogenic architecture towards a simpler active cooling chain. Passive cooling via successive radiative panels at spacecraft level is now used to provide a 50 K thermal environment to an X-IFU owned cryostat. 4.5 K cooling is achieved via a single remote active cryocooler unit, while a multi-stage Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator ensures heat lift down to the 50 mK required by the detectors. Amidst these changes, the core concept of the readout chain remains robust, employing Transition Edge Sensor microcalorimeters and a SQUID-based Time-Division Multiplexing scheme. Noteworthy is the introduction of a slower pixel. This enables an increase in the multiplexing factor (from 34 to 48) without compromising the instrument energy resolution, hence keeping significant system margins to the new 4 eV resolution requirement. This allows reducing the number of channels by more than a factor two, and thus the resource demands on the system, while keeping a 4' field of view (compared to 5' before). In this article, we will give an overview of this new architecture, before detailing its anticipated performances. We use polarization data from SOFIA HAWC+ to investigate the interplay between magnetic fields and stellar feedback in altering gas dynamics within the high-mass star-forming region RCW 36, located in Vela C. This region is of particular interest as it has a bipolar HII region powered by a massive star cluster which may be impacting the surrounding magnetic field. To determine if this is the case, we apply the Histogram of Relative Orientations (HRO) method to quantify the relative alignment between the inferred magnetic field and elongated structures observed in several datasets such as dust emission, column density, temperature, and spectral line intensity maps. The HRO results indicate a bimodal alignment trend, where structures observed with dense gas tracers show a statistically significant preference for perpendicular alignment relative to the magnetic field, while structures probed by photo-dissociation region (PDR) tracers tend to align preferentially parallel relative to the magnetic field. Moreover, the dense gas and PDR associated structures are found to be kinematically distinct such that a bimodal alignment trend is also observed as a function of line-of-sight velocity. This suggests that the magnetic field may have been dynamically important and set a preferred direction of gas flow at the time that RCW 36 formed, resulting in a dense ridge developing perpendicular to the magnetic field. However on filament-scales near the PDR region, feedback may be energetically dominating the magnetic field, warping its geometry and the associated flux-frozen gas structures, causing the observed the preference for parallel relative alignment., Comment: 40 pages (25 pages main paper, 15 pages appendix), 24 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. We present [CII] 158 $\mu$m and [OI] 63 $\mu$m observations of the bipolar HII region RCW 36 in the Vela C molecular cloud, obtained within the SOFIA legacy project FEEDBACK, which is complemented with APEX $^{12/13}$CO(3-2) and Chandra X-ray (0.5-7 keV) data. This shows that the molecular ring, forming the waist of the bipolar nebula, expands with a velocity of 1 - 1.9 km s$^{-1}$. We also observe an increased linewidth in the ring indicating that turbulence is driven by energy injection from the stellar feedback. The bipolar cavity hosts blue-shifted expanding [CII] shells at 5.2$\pm$0.5$\pm$0.5 km s$^{-1}$ (statistical and systematic uncertainty) which indicates that expansion out of the dense gas happens non-uniformly and that the observed bipolar phase might be relatively short ($\sim$0.2 Myr). The X-ray observations show diffuse emission that traces a hot plasma, created by stellar winds, in and around RCW 36. At least 50 \% of the stellar wind energy is missing in RCW 36. This is likely due to leakage which is clearing even larger cavities around the bipolar RCW 36 region. Lastly, the cavities host high-velocity wings in [CII] which indicates relatively high mass ejection rates ($\sim$5$\times$10$^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). This could be driven by stellar winds and/or radiation pressure, but remains difficult to constrain. This local mass ejection, which can remove all mass within 1 pc of RCW 36 in 1-2 Myr, and the large-scale clearing of ambient gas in the Vela C cloud indicates that stellar feedback plays a significant role in suppressing the star formation efficiency (SFE)., Comment: 38 pages, 27 figures, 8 tables, accepted in ApJ

The design and development process for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope, the Low Frequency Aperture Array component, was progressed during the SKA pre-construction phase by an international consortium, with the goal of meeting requirements for a critical design review. As part of the development process a full-sized prototype SKA Low station was deployed, the Aperture Array Verification System 1 (AAVS1). We provide a system overview and describe the commissioning results of AAVS1, which is a low frequency radio telescope with 256 dual-polarisation log-periodic dipole antennas working as a phased array. A detailed system description is provided, including an in-depth overview of relevant sub-systems, ranging from hardware, firmware, software, calibration,and control sub-systems. Early commissioning results cover initial bootstrapping, array calibration, stability testing, beam-forming,and on-sky sensitivity validation. Lessons learned are presented, along with future developments.

The CHIME/FRB experiment has detected thousands of Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) due to its sensitivity and wide field of view; however, its low angular resolution prevents it from localizing events to their host galaxies. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), triggered by FRB detections from CHIME/FRB will solve the challenge of localization for non-repeating events. Using a refurbished 10-m radio dish at the Algonquin Radio Observatory located in Ontario Canada, we developed a testbed for a VLBI experiment with a theoretical ~<30 masec precision. We provide an overview of the 10-m system and describe its refurbishment, the data acquisition, and a procedure for fringe fitting that simultaneously estimates the geometric delay used for localization and the dispersive delay from the ionosphere. Using single pulses from the Crab pulsar, we validate the system and localization procedure, and analyze the clock stability between sites, which is critical for phase-referencing an FRB event. We find a localization of 50 masec is possible with the performance of the current system. Furthermore, for sources with insufficient signal or restricted wideband to simultaneously measure both geometric and ionospheric delays, we show that the differential ionospheric contribution between the two sites must be measured to a precision of 1e-8 pc/cc to provide a reasonable localization from a detection in the 400--800 MHz band. Finally we show detection of an FRB observed simultaneously in the CHIME and the Algonquin 10-m telescope, the first FRB cross-correlated in this very long baseline. The Crab Pulsar's radio emission is unusual, consisting predominantly of giant pulses, with durations of about a micro-second but structure down to the nano-second level, and brightness temperatures of up to $10^{37}\,$K. It is unclear how giant pulses are produced, but they likely originate near the pulsar's light cylinder, where corotating plasma approaches the speed of light. We report observations in the 400-800 MHz frequency band, where the pulses are broadened by scattering in the surrounding Crab nebula. We find that some pulse frequency spectra show strong bands, which vary during the scattering tail, in one case showing a smooth upward drift. While the banding may simply reflect interference between nano-second scale pulse components, the variation is surprising, as in the scattering tail the only difference is that the source is observed via slightly longer paths, bent by about an arcsecond in the nebula. The corresponding small change in viewing angle could nevertheless reproduce the observed drift by a change in Doppler shift, if the plasma that emitted the giant pulses moved highly relativistically, with a Lorentz factor $\gamma\sim10^4$ (and without much spread in $\gamma$). If so, this would support models that appeal to highly relativistic plasma to transform ambient magnetic structures to coherent GHz radio emission, be it for giant pulses or for potentially related sources, such as fast radio bursts., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We describe the non-minimal Standard Model, consisting of minimalistic extensions of the Standard Model, which for all we know is the theory of the universe, able to describe all of the universe from the beginning of time. Extensions discussed are an extra neutrino and a new Higgs model. We introduce the principle of global relativity and discuss how the theory can be largely derived from this principle. One is led to the unification of forces into SU(5) and a form of dark matter. We discuss the limitations of the theory, showing that it is not the theory of everything. However we argue that it is the only part, that is within conceivable reach of physical experiment or astronomical observations. Magnetars are highly magnetized young neutron stars that occasionally produce enormous bursts and flares of X-rays and gamma-rays. Of the approximately thirty magnetars currently known in our Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds, five have exhibited transient radio pulsations. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are millisecond-duration bursts of radio waves arriving from cosmological distances. Some have been seen to repeat. A leading model for repeating FRBs is that they are extragalactic magnetars, powered by their intense magnetic fields. However, a challenge to this model has been that FRBs must have radio luminosities many orders of magnitude larger than those seen from known Galactic magnetars. Here we report the detection of an extremely intense radio burst from the Galactic magnetar SGR 1935+2154 using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) FRB project. The fluence of this two-component bright radio burst and the estimated distance to SGR 1935+2154 together imply a 400-800 MHz burst energy of $\sim 3 \times 10^{34}$ erg, which is three orders of magnitude brighter than those of any radio-emitting magnetar detected thus far. Such a burst coming from a nearby galaxy would be indistinguishable from a typical FRB. This event thus bridges a large fraction of the radio energy gap between the population of Galactic magnetars and FRBs, strongly supporting the notion that magnetars are the origin of at least some FRBs., Comment: Submitted to Nature. This report was submitted as part of the SKA Low Frequency Aperture Array Critical Design Review describing the design of the SKA1-LOW station that took place between 2013 and 2018. The SKA1 LOW field station is inscribed in a circular area having an effective station diameter (centre to centre) of 38 meters and has 256 SKALA4 elements. This document describes the electromagnetic design of the field station. In particular it describes the layout design and the electromagnetic modelling and characteristics of the station. This document describes the effects associated with the layout and array such as mutual coupling effects, side lobe pattern and beam shape (eg. smoothness, calibration models) and presents the state of the art of our ability to measure the array performance and validate the simulation work. The current LFAA field node requirements, derived from the SKA L1 requirements, have evolved over the last years since the LFAA PDR and the System Baseline Design. The SKA1 LOW field station has been designed to meet those requirements and has therefore tracked their evolution (eg. sensitivity requirements, array diameter, etc.). The aforementioned requirements represent a very tight space with a desire for very high sensitivity over a large frequency range (7 to 1) and wide field of view (90 degrees cone around zenith) while keeping the station diameter to a minimum, so as the filling factor but at the same time allowing for sufficient space between antennas to allow for easy maintenances, amongst many others. The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is the next generation radio telescope distinguished by a superb sensitivity due to its large aperture (about one square kilometre) and advanced instrumentation. It will cover a broad range of observing bands including those used for tracking of and communications to deep space missions. While spacecraft tracking is not a main application defining the technical specifications of the SKA, this facility might play a role in tracking deep space probes as a backup to the ``dedicated'' deep space tracking networks. This paper presents possible applications of the SKA as a deep space tracking facility and major related technical specifications of various concepts of the SKA. It was presented at the 3rd International Workshop on Tracking, Telemetry and Command Systems for Space Applications, ESA-ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany, 7-9 September 2004. Over the past years, the SKA concept has developed to a much higher level of detalisation and is currently at the implementation phase. A number of specific considerations in this presentation no longer correspond to the actual status of the SKA project. However, the overall concept of the SKA applications for communication and tracking of interplanetary spacecraft remain topical, and some approaches presented here remain of interest for prospective deep space missions., Comment: 9 pages, 5 tables, 2 figures

I show that with the discovery of the Higgs boson we have entered a new phase of our understanding of nature. This leads us towards a paradigm shift in the search for possible new physics, away from major extensions like supersymmetry towards minimalistic extensions, that largely preserve the structure of the standard model. To discover such new physics, precision may be more important than energy. Precision = Discovery! This paper is the first in a series of papers describing the impact of antenna instrumental artefacts on the 21-cm cosmology experiments to be carried out by the low frequency instrument (SKA1-LOW) of the Square Kilometre Array telescope (SKA), i.e., the Cosmic Dawn (CD) and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). The smoothness of the passband response of the current log-periodic antenna being developed for the SKA1-LOW is analyzed using numerical electromagnetic simulations. The amplitude variations over the frequency range are characterized using low-order polynomials defined locally, in order to study the impact of the passband smoothness in the instrument calibration and CD/EoR Science. A solution is offered to correct a fast ripple found at 60~MHz during a test campaign at the SKA site at the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory, Western Australia in September 2015 with a minor impact on the telescope's performance and design. A comparison with the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array antenna is also shown demonstrating the potential use of the SKA1-LOW antenna for the Delay Spectrum technique to detect the EoR., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication (MNRAS)

We report characterization results for an engineering prototype of a next-generation low-frequency radio astronomy array. This prototype, which we refer to as the Aperture Array Verification System 0.5 (AAVS0.5), is a sparse pseudo-random array of 16 log-periodic antennas designed for 70-450 MHz. It is co-located with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) at the Murchison Radioastronomy Observatory (MRO) near the Australian Square Kilometre Array (SKA) core site. We characterize the AAVS0.5 using two methods: in-situ radio interferometry with astronomical sources and an engineering approach based on detailed full-wave simulation. In-situ measurement of the small prototype array is challenging due to the dominance of the Galactic noise and the relatively weaker calibration sources easily accessible in the southern sky. The MWA, with its 128 "tiles" and up to 3 km baselines, enabled in-situ measurement via radio interferometry. We present array sensitivity and beam pattern characterization results and compare to detailed full-wave simulation. We discuss areas where differences between the two methods exist and offer possibilities for improvement. We present an in-situ antenna characterization method and results for a "low-frequency" radio astronomy engineering prototype array, characterized over the 75-300 MHz frequency range. The presence of multiple cosmic radio sources, particularly the dominant Galactic noise, makes in-situ characterization at these frequencies challenging; however, it will be shown that high quality measurement is possible via radio interferometry techniques. This method is well-known in the radio astronomy community but seems less so in antenna measurement and wireless communications communities, although the measurement challenges involving multiple undesired sources in the antenna field-of-view bear some similarities.
