In early 2020, the COVID-19 forced schools, colleges, and universities to close their campuses and shift 1.5 billion learners from the face-to-face mode of instruction to online learning. The abruptness of the shift took a toll on students' mental and emotional health. In response, educational institutions prioritized the use of compassion-based teaching and learning policies and approaches in order to create environments in which students can continue to thrive. This paper describes how the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines implemented its own brand of compassion-based teaching, "cura personalis" or care for the entire person. We discuss the circumstances that motivated the emphasis on compassion, the teaching and learning practices that enacted compassion, and the tradeoffs or costs to the institution. We found that the pandemic made it difficult for students to concentrate on their studies, were less engaged, and were fearful and anxious. Teachers therefore focused on students' emotional wellbeing by conducting regular check-ins, just to find out how they were, and relaxed assessment requirements. As a consequence, teachers had to greatly reduce the scope of their subjects and deprioritize academic rigor. It is in this context that recommendations are made to balance emotional and academic wellbeing.

Abstract Dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP) is a process that transfers electron spin polarisation to nuclei by applying resonant microwave radiation, and has been widely used to improve the sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Here we demonstrate new levels of performance for static cross-effect proton DNP using high peak power chirped inversion pulses at 94 GHz to create a strong polarisation gradient across the inhomogeneously broadened line of the mono-radical 4-amino TEMPO. Enhancements of up to 340 are achieved at an average power of a few hundred mW, with fast build-up times (3 s). Experiments are performed using a home-built wideband kW pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer operating at 94 GHz, integrated with an NMR detection system. Simultaneous DNP and EPR characterisation of other mono-radicals and biradicals, as a function of temperature, leads to additional insights into limiting relaxation mechanisms and give further motivation for the development of wideband pulsed amplifiers for DNP at higher frequencies.

This study analyses the effect of solar field size, biomass boiler and thermal storage capacity for a time dependant demand. The main results to obtain from the simulation will be solar share, biomass consumption and annual coverage with the proposed systems and a selection of the optimum size of these variables for the study case design. Results gathered show that, while there is an increment in solar energy obtained while selecting bigger solar panel areas, tank relations for these big systems show improvement in smaller sizes, visible in the increment of biomass energy used when bigger storage sizes to solar collector areas used.

The aim of this study was to investigate the interferon tau (IFNt) concentration in the peripheral maternal blood during the early phase of pregnancy in buffalo cows and improve the knowledge on the physiological importance of circulating IFNt, evaluating the possible interaction with pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) and progesterone (P4). Blood samples were taken from buffalo cows on day 0 (day of AI), 7, 14, 18, 28, and 40 post insemination for the IFNt, PAG, and P4 analysis and to determine the IFNt mRNA expression. The animals were categorized ex post into Pregnant, Non-pregnant and Embryo mortality groups. The interferon value was influenced by group (p = 0.003), being always higher in pregnant buffalo cows than in non-pregnant ones, while the embryo mortality group showed intermediate values between those for pregnant and non-pregnant animals. The mRNA expression of IFNt was not influenced by groups or any time points. The regression analysis that included IFNt as the independent variable showed that PAGs, from day 18 (p < 0.01), and P4, from day 28 (p < 0.05), were positively associated with IFNt values. The close associations among IFNt, PAGs and P4 demonstrate that all three molecules work together for fetal–placental well-being and pregnancy support. Unfortunately, the great individual variability in circulating IFNt makes this analysis unsuitable for early pregnancy diagnosis.

It is unknown whether there are differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in the circulating exosomes of appropriate- vs. small-for-gestational-age (AGA vs. SGA) infants, and if so, whether such DEPs relate to measures of endocrine–metabolic health and body composition in childhood. Proteomic analysis in cord-blood-derived exosomes was performed by label-free quantitative mass spectrometry in AGA (n = 20) and SGA infants (n = 20) and 91 DEPs were identified. Enrichment analysis revealed that they were related to complement and coagulation cascades, lipid metabolism, neural development, PI3K/Akt and RAS/RAF/MAPK signaling pathways, phagocytosis and focal adhesion. Protein–protein interaction (PPI) analysis identified 39 DEPs involved in the pathways enriched by the KEGG and Reactome. Those DEPs were associated with measures of adiposity and insulin resistance and with liver fat at age 7 (all p < 0.01). Multivariate linear regression analysis uncovered that two DEPs (up-regulated in SGA), namely PCYOX1 (related to adipogenesis) and HSP90AA1 (related to lipid metabolism and metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease progression), were independent predictors of the hepatic fat fraction at age 7 (β = 0.634; p = 0.002; R2 = 52% and β = 0.436; p = 0.009; R2 = 24%, respectively). These data suggest that DEPs at birth may predict insulin resistance, adrenarche and/or ectopic adiposity in SGA children at age 7, when an early insulin-sensitizing intervention could be considered. Migrating cells penetrate tissue barriers during development, inflammatory responses, and tumor metastasis. We study if migration in vivo in such three-dimensionally confined environments requires changes in the mechanical properties of the surrounding cells using embryonic Drosophila melanogaster hemocytes, also called macrophages, as a model. We find that macrophage invasion into the germband through transient separation of the apposing ectoderm and mesoderm requires cell deformations and reductions in apical tension in the ectoderm. Interestingly, the genetic pathway governing these mechanical shifts acts downstream of the only known tumor necrosis factor superfamily member in Drosophila, Eiger, and its receptor, Grindelwald. Eiger-Grindelwald signaling reduces levels of active Myosin in the germband ectodermal cortex through the localization of a Crumbs complex component, Patj (Pals-1-associated tight junction protein). We therefore elucidate a distinct molecular pathway that controls tissue tension and demonstrate the importance of such regulation for invasive migration in vivo.
