We present a combined magnetometry, muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR), and neutron scattering study of the insulating spin glass Zn$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$Te, for which magnetic Mn$^{2+}$ and nonmagnetic Zn$^{2+}$ ions are randomly distributed on a face-centered cubic lattice. Using magnetic pair distribution function (mPDF) analysis and reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) modeling of the diffuse magnetic scattering, we show that the spin-glass ground state exhibits short-range type-III antiferromagnetic order with a locally ordered moment of 3.4 $\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ between nearest-neighbor spins, which decays as a function of spin separation distance with a correlation length of approximately 5 {\AA}. The diffuse magnetic scattering and corresponding mPDF show no significant changes across the spin-glass freezing temperature $T_f = 22$ K, indicating that the dynamically fluctuating short-range spin correlations in the paramagnetic state retain the same basic type-III configuration that characterizes the spin-glass state; the only change apparent from the neutron scattering data is a gradual reduction of the correlation length and locally ordered moment with increasing temperature. The $\mu$SR results demonstrate that fluctuation rate of the short-range spin correlations decreases gradually and somewhat inhomogeneously through the sample volume as the temperature decreases toward $T_f$. Taken together, these results provide a unique and detailed picture of the local magnetic structure and dynamics in a concentrated spin glass. In addition, this work showcases a new statistical method for extracting diffuse scattering signals from neutron powder diffraction data, which we developed to facilitate the mPDF and RMC analysis of the neutron data. This method has the potential to be broadly useful for neutron powder diffraction experiments on a variety of materials with short-range atomic or magnetic order.

We consider the scattering of waves by a penetrable inclusion embedded in some reference medium. We exhibit examples of materials and geometries for which non-scattering frequencies exist, i.e., for which at some frequencies there are incident fields which produce null scattered fields outside of the inhomogeneity. We show in particular that certain domains with corners or even cusps can support non-scattering frequencies. We relate the latter, for some inclusions, to resonance frequencies for Dirichlet or Neumann cavities. We also find situations where incident non-scattering fields solve the Helmholtz equation in a neighborhood of the inhomogeneity and not in the whole space. Finally, in relation with invisibility, we give examples of inclusions of anisotropic materials which are non-scattering for all real frequencies. We prove that corresponding material indices must have a special structure on the boundary.

We are interested in the lower part of the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian $A^\varepsilon$ in a thin waveguide $\Pi^\varepsilon$ obtained by repeating periodically a pattern, itself constructed by scaling an inner field geometry $\Omega$ by a small factor $\varepsilon>0$. The Floquet-Bloch theory ensures that the spectrum of $A^\varepsilon$ has a band-gap structure. Due to the Dirichlet boundary conditions, these bands all move to $+\infty$ as $O(\varepsilon^{-2})$ when $\varepsilon\to0^+$. Concerning their widths, applying techniques of dimension reduction, we show that the results depend on the dimension of the so-called space of almost standing waves in $\Omega$ that we denote by $\mathrm{X}_\dagger$. Generically, i.e. for most $\Omega$, there holds $\mathrm{X}_\dagger=\{0\}$ and the lower part of the spectrum of $A^\varepsilon$ is very sparse, made of bands of length at most $O(\varepsilon)$ as $\varepsilon\to0^+$. For certain $\Omega$ however, we have $\mathrm{dim}\,\mathrm{X}_\dagger=1$ and then there are bands of length $O(1)$ which allow for wave propagation in $\Pi^\varepsilon$. The main originality of this work lies in the study of the behaviour of the spectral bands when perturbing $\Omega$ around a particular $\Omega_\star$ where $\mathrm{dim}\,\mathrm{X}_\dagger=1$. We show a breathing phenomenon for the spectrum of $A^\varepsilon$: when inflating $\Omega$ around $\Omega_\star$, the spectral bands rapidly expand before shrinking. In the process, a band dives below the normalized threshold $\pi^2/\varepsilon^2$, stops breathing and becomes extremely short as $\Omega$ continues to inflate.

We consider a Laplace type problem with a generalized impedance boundary condition of the form $\partial_\nu u=-\partial_x(g\partial_xu)$ on a flat part $\Gamma$ of the boundary. Here $\nu$ is the outward unit normal vector to $\partial\Omega$, $g$ is the impedance function and $x$ is the coordinate along $\Gamma$. Such problems appear for example in the modelling of small perturbations of the boundary. In the literature, the cases $g=1$ or $g=-1$ have been investigated. In this work, we address situations where $\Gamma$ contains the origin and $g(x)=\mathbb{1}_{x>0}(x)x^\alpha$ or $g(x)=-\mbox{sign}(x)|x|^\alpha$ with $\alpha\ge0$. In other words, we study cases where $g$ vanishes at the origin and changes its sign. The main message is that the well-posedness in the Fredholm sense of the corresponding problems depends on the value of $\alpha$. For $\alpha\in[0,1)$, we show that the associated operators are Fredholm of index zero while it is not the case when $\alpha=1$. The proof of the first results is based on the reformulation as 1D problems combined with the derivation of compact embedding results for the functional spaces involved in the analysis. The proof of the second results relies on the computation of singularities and the construction of Weyl's sequences. We also discuss the equivalence between the strong and weak formulations, which is not straightforward. Finally, we provide simple numerical experiments which seem to corroborate the theorems.

We report nanoscale inter-particle magnetic orderings in self-assemblies of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs), and the emergence of inter-particle antiferromagnetic (AF) (super-antiferromagnetic) correlations near the coercive field at low temperature. The magnetic ordering is probed via x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS), with the x-ray energy tuned to the Fe-L3 edge and using circular polarized light. By exploiting dichroic effects, a magnetic scattering signal is isolated from the charge scattering signal. The magnetic signal informs about nanoscale spatial orderings at various stages throughout the magnetization process and at various temperatures throughout the superparamagnetic blocking transition, for two different sizes of NPs, 5 and 11 nm, with blocking temperatures TB of 28 K and 170 K, respectively. At 300 K, while the magnetometry data essentially shows superparamagnetism and absence of hysteresis for both particle sizes, the XRMS data reveals the presence of non-zero (up to 9/100) inter-particle AF couplings when the applied field is released to zero for the 11 nm NPs. These AF couplings are drastically amplified when the NPs are cooled down below TB and reach up to 12/100 for the 5 nm NPs and 48/100 for the 11 nm NPs, near the coercive point. The data suggests that the particle size affects the prevalence of the AF couplings: compared to ferromagnetic (F) couplings, the relative prevalence of AF couplings at the coercive point increases from a factor ~ 1.6 to 3.8 when the NP size increases from 5 to 11 nm., Comment: 24 pages, 10 figures

We study a transmission problem for the time harmonic Maxwell's equations between a classical positive material and a so-called negative index material in which both the permittivity $\varepsilon$ and the permeability $\mu$ take negative values. Additionally, we assume that the interface between the two domains is smooth everywhere except at a point where it coincides locally with a conical tip. In this context, it is known that for certain critical values of the contrasts in $\varepsilon$ and in $\mu$, the corresponding scalar operators are not of Fredholm type in the usual $H^1$ spaces. In this work, we show that in these situations, the Maxwell's equations are not well-posed in the classical $L^2$ framework due to existence of hypersingular fields which are of infinite energy at the tip. By combining the $\mathrm{T}$-coercivity approach and the Kondratiev theory, we explain how to construct new functional frameworks to recover well-posedness of the Maxwell's problem. We also explain how to select the setting which is consistent with the limiting absorption principle. From a technical point of view, the fields as well as their curls decompose as the sum of an explicit singular part, related to the black hole singularities of the scalar operators, and a smooth part belonging to some weighted spaces. The analysis we propose rely in particular on the proof of new key results of scalar and vector potential representations of singular fields.

We investigate the spectrum of a Laplace operator with mixed boundary conditions in an unbounded chamfered quarter of layer. This problem arises in the study of the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian in thick polyhedral domains having some symmetries such as the so-called Fichera layer. The geometry we consider depends on two parameters gathered in some vector $\kappa=(\kappa_1,\kappa_2)$ which characterizes the domain at the edges. By exchanging the axes and/or modifying their orientations if necessary, it is sufficient to restrict the analysis to the cases $\kappa_1\ge0$ and $\kappa_2\in[-\kappa_1,\kappa_1]$. We identify the essential spectrum and establish different results concerning the discrete spectrum with respect to $\kappa$. In particular, we show that for a given $\kappa_1>0$, there is some $h(\kappa_1)>0$ such that discrete spectrum exists for $\kappa_2\in[-\kappa_1,0)\cup(h(\kappa_1),\kappa_1]$ whereas it is empty for $\kappa_2\in[0,h(\kappa_1)]$. The proofs rely on classical arguments of spectral theory such as the max-min principle. The main originality lies rather in the delicate use of the features of the geometry.

Optimizing magnetic thin films for nanotechnologies often requires imaging nanoscale magnetic domain patterns via magnetic microscopy. The finite size of the image may however significantly affect the characterization of the observed magnetic states. We evaluated finite image size effects on the characterization of a variety of stripe and bubble domain patterns exhibited by ferromagnetic Co/Pt multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, where the domain size (stripe width and bubble diameter) is around 100 nm. If the image size is too small, below ~ 5 microns, it may cause a significant underestimation of average domain size and overestimation of domain density by up to a factor 5 when reducing the image size from about 20 microns to about a 1 microns. Using a criterion based on how the excess density evolves with image size, we found that to obtain reliable statistical estimates of domain density and average domain size, the image needs to be large enough, and include at least about 100 stripes or about 2500 bubbles.

We give a description of the lower part of the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian in an unbounded 3D periodic lattice made of thin bars (of width $\varepsilon\ll1$) which have a square cross section. This spectrum coincides with the union of segments which all go to $+\infty$ as $\varepsilon$ tends to zero due to the Dirichlet boundary condition. We show that the first spectral segment is extremely tight, of length $O(e^{-\delta/\varepsilon})$, $\delta>0$, while the length of the next spectral segments is $O(\varepsilon)$. To establish these results, we need to study in detail the properties of the Dirichlet Laplacian $A^{\Omega}$ in the geometry $\Omega$ obtained by zooming at the junction regions of the initial periodic lattice. This problem has its own interest and playing with symmetries together with max-min arguments as well as a well-chosen Friedrichs inequality, we prove that $A^{\Omega}$ has a unique eigenvalue in its discrete spectrum, which generates the first spectral segment. Additionally we show that there is no threshold resonance for $A^{\Omega}$, that is no non trivial bounded solution at the threshold frequency for $A^{\Omega}$. This implies that the correct 1D model of the lattice for the next spectral segments is a graph with Dirichlet conditions at the vertices. We also present numerics to complement the analysis.

We consider the propagation of acoustic waves in a waveguide containing a penetrable dissipative inclusion. We prove that as soon as the dissipation, characterized by some coefficient $\eta$, is non zero, the scattering solutions are uniquely defined. Additionally, we give an asymptotic expansion of the corresponding scattering matrix when $\eta\to0^+$ (small dissipation) and when $\eta\to+\infty$ (large dissipation). Surprisingly, at the limit $\eta\to+\infty$, we show that no energy is absorbed by the inclusion. This is due to the so-called skin-effect phenomenon and can be explained by the fact that the field no longer penetrates into the highly dissipative inclusion. These results guarantee that in monomode regime, the amplitude of the reflection coefficient has a global minimum with respect to $\eta$. The situation where this minimum is zero, that is when the device acts as a perfect absorber, is particularly interesting for certain applications. However it does not happen in general. In this work, we show how to perturb the geometry of the waveguide to create 2D perfect absorbers in monomode regime. Asymptotic expansions are justified by error estimates and theoretical results are supported by numerical illustrations.

Magnetic nanoparticles offer unique potential for various technological, biomedical, or environmental applications thanks to the size-, shape- and material-dependent tunability of their magnetic properties. To optimize particles for a specific application, it is crucial to interrelate their performance with their structural and magnetic properties. This review presents the advantages of small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering techniques for achieving a detailed multiscale characterization of magnetic nanoparticles and their ensembles in a mesoscopic size range from 1 to a few hundred nanometers with nanometer resolution. Both X-rays and neutrons allow the ensemble-averaged determination of structural properties, such as particle morphology or particle arrangement in multilayers and 3D assemblies. Additionally, the magnetic scattering contributions enable retrieving the internal magnetization profile of the nanoparticles as well as the inter-particle moment correlations caused by interactions within dense assemblies. Most measurements are used to determine the time-averaged ensemble properties, in addition advanced small-angle scattering techniques exist that allow accessing particle and spin dynamics on various timescales. In this review, we focus on conventional small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS and SANS), X-ray and neutron reflectometry, gracing-incidence SAXS and SANS, X-ray resonant magnetic scattering, and neutron spin-echo spectroscopy techniques. For each technique, we provide a general overview, present the latest scientific results, and discuss its strengths as well as sample requirements. Finally, we give our perspectives on how future small-angle scattering experiments, especially in combination with micromagnetic simulations, could help to optimize the performance of magnetic nanoparticles for specific applications., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures

Short-range magnetic correlations can significantly increase the thermopower of magnetic semiconductors, representing a noteworthy development in the decades-long effort to develop high-performance thermoelectric materials. Here, we reveal the nature of the thermopower-enhancing magnetic correlations in the antiferromagnetic semiconductor MnTe. Using magnetic pair distribution function analysis of neutron scattering data, we obtain a detailed, real-space view of robust, nanometer-scale, antiferromagnetic correlations that persist into the paramagnetic phase above the N\'eel temperature $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ = 307 K. The magnetic correlation length in the paramagnetic state is significantly longer along the crystallographic $c$ axis than within the $ab$ plane, pointing to anisotropic magnetic interactions. Ab initio calculations of the spin-spin correlations using density functional theory in the disordered local moment approach reproduce this result with quantitative accuracy. These findings constitute the first real-space picture of short-range spin correlations in a magnetically enhanced thermoelectric and inform future efforts to optimize thermoelectric performance by magnetic means.

We measured the local magneto-transport (MT) signal with an out-of-plane magnetic field, including magneto-resistance (MR) and Extraordinary Hall effect (EHE), in exchange-biased [Co/Pd]IrMn thin multilayers that are micro-structured with a 100 micron window. We found that when measured locally around the window, the MT signal deviate from the expected behavior. We studied possible causes, including film micro-structuration, electrical contact geometry as well as magnetic field tilt from the normal direction. These MT measurements were carried using the Van-der-Pauw method, with a set a four microscopic contacts directly surrounding the window, and a set of four contacts positioned several millimeters away from the window. We found that tilting the magnetic field direction with respect to the normal does not significantly affect the MT signal, whereas the positioning and geometry of the contacts seem to highly affect the MT signal. When the contacts are directly surrounding the window, the shape of the EHE signal is drastically deformed, suggesting that the electron path is disturbed by the presence of the window and the proximity of the electric contacts. If, on the other hand, the contacts are sufficiently far apart, the MT signal is not significantly affected by the presence of the window. Furthermore, the deformed EHE signal measured on the inner contacts can be modeled as a mix of the EHE and MR signals measured on the outer contacts.

We consider the propagation of acoustic waves in a 2D waveguide unbounded in one direction and containing a compact obstacle. The wavenumber is fixed so that only one mode can propagate. The goal of this work is to propose a method to cloak the obstacle. More precisely, we add to the geometry thin outer resonators of width $\varepsilon$ and we explain how to choose their positions as well as their lengths to get a transmission coefficient approximately equal to one as if there were no obstacle. In the process we also investigate several related problems. In particular, we explain how to get zero transmission and how to design phase shifters. The approach is based on asymptotic analysis in presence of thin resonators. An essential point is that we work around resonance lengths of the resonators. This allows us to obtain effects of order one with geometrical perturbations of width $\varepsilon$. Various numerical experiments illustrate the theory.

The goal of this work is to design an acoustic mode converter. More precisely, the wave number is chosen so that two modes can propagate. We explain how to construct geometries such that the energy of the modes is completely transmitted and additionally the mode 1 is converted into the mode 2 and conversely. To proceed, we work in a symmetric waveguide made of two branches connected by two thin ligaments whose lengths and positions are carefully tuned. The approach is based on asymptotic analysis for thin ligaments around resonance lengths. The magnetic properties of Fe$_3$O$_4$ nanoparticle assemblies have been investigated in detail through a combination of vibrating sample magnetometry and muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) techniques. Two samples with average particle sizes of 5 nm and 20 nm, respectively, were studied. For both samples, the magnetometry and $\mu$SR results exhibit clear signatures of the superparmagnetic state at high temperature and the magnetically blocked state at low temperature. The $\mu$SR data demonstrate that the transition from the superparamagnetic to the blocked state occurs gradually throughout the sample volume over a broad temperature range due to the finite particle size distribution of each sample. The transition occurs between approximately 3 K and 45 K for the 5 nm sample and 150 K and 300 K for the 20 nm sample. The magnetometry and $\mu$SR data are further analyzed to yield estimates of microscopic magnetic parameters including the nanoparticle spin-flip activation energy $E_A$, magnetic anisotropy $K$, and intrinsic nanoparticle spin reversal attempt time $\tau_0$. These results highlight the complementary information about magnetic nanoparticles that can be obtained by bulk magnetic probes such as magnetometry and local magnetic probes such as $\mu$SR.

We consider the propagation of time harmonic acoustic waves in a device with three channels. The wave number is chosen such that only the piston mode can propagate. The main goal of this work is to present a geometry which can serve as an energy distributor. More precisely, the geometry is first designed so that for an incident wave coming from one channel, the energy is almost completely transmitted in the two other channels. Additionally, tuning a bit two geometrical parameters, we can control the ratio of energy transmitted in the two channels. The approach is based on asymptotic analysis for thin slits around resonance lengths. We also provide numerical results to illustrate the theory.

In this work, we are interested in the analysis of time-harmonic Maxwell's equations in presence of a conical tip of a material with negative dielectric constants. When these constants belong to some critical range, the electromagnetic field exhibits strongly oscillating singularities at the tip which have infinite energy. Consequently Maxwell's equations are not well-posed in the classical $L^2$ framework. The goal of the present work is to provide an appropriate functional setting for 3D Maxwell's equations when the dielectric permittivity (but not the magnetic permeability) takes critical values. Following what has been done for the 2D scalar case, the idea is to work in weighted Sobolev spaces, adding to the space the so-called outgoing propagating singularities. The analysis requires new results of scalar and vector potential representations of singular fields. The outgoing behaviour is selected via the limiting absorption principle.

We consider the propagation of the piston mode in an acoustic waveguide obstructed by two screens with small holes. In general, due to the features of the geometry, almost no energy of the incident wave is transmitted through the structure. The goal of this article is to show that tuning carefully the distance between the two screens, which form a resonator, one can get almost complete transmission. We obtain an explicit criterion, not so obvious to intuit, for this phenomenon to happen. Numerical experiments illustrate the analysis.

: Understanding the correlations between magnetic nanoparticles is important for nanotechnologies, such as high-density magnetic recording and biomedical applications, where functionalized magnetic particles are used as contrast agents and for drug delivery. The ability to control the magnetic state of individual particles depends on the good knowledge of magnetic correlations between particles when assembled. Inaccessible via standard magnetometry techniques, nanoscale magnetic ordering in self-assemblies of Fe3O4 nanoparticles is here unveiled via x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS). Measured throughout the magnetization process, the XRMS signal reveals size-dependent inter-particle magnetic correlations. Smaller (5 nm) particles show little magnetic correlation, even when tightly close-packed, yielding to mostly magnetic disorder in the absence of external field, which is characteristic of superparamagnetic behavior. In contrast, larger (11 nm) particles tend to be strongly correlated, yielding a mix of magnetic orders including ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic orders. These strong magnetic correlations are present even when the particles are sparsely distributed.

The advance of magnetic nanotechnologies relies on detailed understanding of nanoscale magnetic mechanisms in materials. Magnetic domain memory (MDM), i.e., the tendency for magnetic domains to repeat the same pattern during field-cycling, is important to many technologies including magnetic recording developments. We show coherent x-ray magnetic scattering studies unveiling MDM in [Co/Pd]/IrMn films. When illuminated by coherent x-rays, the magnetic domains in the [Co/Pd] multilayer produce a speckle pattern unique to their specific nanoscale configuration. By cross-correlating such speckle patterns throughout the magnetization loop, we measure the MDM. When cooled below its blocking temperature, the film exhibits up to 100% MDM, induced by exchange-couplings with the IrMn layer. Furthermore, the degree of MDM drastically depends on cooling conditions. If the film is cooled under moderate fields, MDM is high throughout the entire magnetization loop. If the film is cooled under nearly saturating field, MDM vanishes, except at nucleation and saturation

Magnetic domain memory (MDM) is the ability exhibited by certain magnetic materials to reproduce the exact same nanoscale magnetic domain pattern, even after it has been completely erased by an external magnetic field. In this chapter, we review the various circumstances under which this unusual phenomenon occurs. We explain how partial MDM was first observed in rough Co/Pt multilayers with perpendicular magnetization as a result of structural defects. We then show how 100 % MDM was achieved, even in smooth ferromagnetic films, by coupling Co/Pd multilayers to an antiferromagnetic IrMn template via exchange interactions. We describe how high MDM, extending through-out nearly the entirety of the magnetization process, is obtained when zero-field-cooling the material below its blocking temperature where exchange couplings occur. We also review the persistence of MDM through field cycling and while warming the material all the way up to the blocking temperature. Additionally, we discuss the spatial dependence of MDM, highlighting intriguing oscillatory behaviors suggesting magnetic correlations and rotational symmetries at the nanoscopic scales. Finally, we review the dependence of MDM on cooling conditions, revealing how MDM can be fully controlled, turned on and off, by adjusting the magnitude of the cooling field.

We consider the problem of imaging a crack network embedded in some homogeneous background from measured multi-static far field data generated by acoustic plane waves. We propose two novel approaches that can be seen as extensions of linear sampling-type methods and that provide indicator functions which are sensitive to local cracks densities. The first approach uses multiple frequencies data to compute spectral signatures associated with artificially embedded localized obstacles. The second approach also exploits the idea of incorporating an artificial background but uses data for a single frequency. The indicator function is built using a similar concept as for differential sampling methods: compare the solution of the interior transmission problem for healthy inclusion with the one with embedded cracks. The performance of the methods is tested and discussed on synthetic examples and the numerical results are compared with the ones obtained using the classical factorization method.

We consider the propagation of acoustic waves at a given wavenumber in a waveguide which is unbounded in one direction. We explain how to construct penetrable obstacles characterized by a physical coefficient $\rho$ which are invisible in various ways. In particular, we focus our attention on invisibility in reflection (the reflection matrix is zero), invisibility in reflection and transmission (the scattering matrix is the same as if there were no obstacle) and relative invisibility (two different obstacles have the same scattering matrix). To study these problems, we use a continuation method which requires to compute the scattering matrix $\mathbb{S}(\rho)$ as well as its differential with respect to the material index $d\mathbb{S}(\rho)$. The justification of the method also needs for the proof of abstract results of ontoness of well-chosen functionals constructed from the terms of $d\mathbb{S}(\rho)$. We provide a complete proof of the results in monomode regime when the wavenumber is such that only one mode can propagate. And we give all the ingredients to implement the method in multimode regime. We end the article by presenting numerical results to illustrate the analysis.

We consider the propagation of surface water waves in a straight planar channel perturbed at the bottom by several thin curved tunnels and wells. We propose a method to construct non reflecting underwater topographies of this type at an arbitrary prescribed wave number. To proceed, we compute asymptotic expansions of the diffraction solutions with respect to the small parameter of the geometry taking into account the existence of boundary layer phenomena. We establish error estimates to validate the expansions using advances techniques of weighted spaces with detached asymptotics. In the process, we show the absence of trapped surface waves for perturbations small enough. This analysis furnishes asymptotic formulas for the scattering matrix and we use them to determine underwater topographies which are non-reflecting. Theoretical and numerical examples are given.

Anion and cation emission following water dissociation was studied for 6.6-keV $^{16}$O$^{+}$ + H$_{2}$O collisions. Absolute cross sections for the emission of all positively and negatively charged fragments, differential in both energy and observation angle, were measured. The fragments formed in hard, binary collisions appearing in peaks were distinguishable from those created in soft collisions with many-body dynamics that result in a broad energy spectrum. A striking feature is that anions and cations are emitted with similar energy and angular distributions, with a nearly constant ratio of about 1:100 for H$^{-}$ to H$^{+}$. Model calculations were performed at different levels of complexity. Four-body scattering simulations reproduce the measured fragment distributions if adequate kinetic-energy release of the target is taken into account. Providing even further insight into the underlying processes, predictions of a thermodynamic model indicate that transfer ionization at small impact parameters is the dominant mechanism for H$^{+}$ creation. The present findings confirm our earlier observation that in molecular fragmentation induced by slow, singly charged ions, the charge states of the emitted hydrogen fragments follow a simple statistical distribution independent of the way they are formed.

We investigate a time-harmonic wave problem in a waveguide. We work at low frequency so that only one mode can propagate. It is known that the scattering matrix exhibits a rapid variation for real frequencies in a vicinity of a complex resonance located close to the real axis. This is the so-called Fano resonance phenomenon. And when the geometry presents certain properties of symmetry, there are two different real frequencies such that we have either $R=0$ or $T=0$, where $R$ and $T$ denote the reflection and transmission coefficients. In this work, we prove that without the assumption of symmetry of the geometry, quite surprisingly, there is always one real frequency for which we have $T=0$. In this situation, all the energy sent in the waveguide is backscattered. However in general, we do not have $R=0$ in the process. We provide numerical results to illustrate our theorems.

We are interested in the classical ill-posed Cauchy problem for the Laplace equation. One method to approximate the solution associated with compatible data consists in considering a family of regularized well-posed problems depending on a small parameter $\varepsilon>0$. In this context, in order to prove convergence of finite elements methods, it is necessary to get regularity results of the solutions to these regularized problems which hold uniformly in $\varepsilon$. In the present work, we obtain these results in smooth domains and in 2D polygonal geometries. In presence of corners, due the particular structure of the regularized problems, classical techniques \`a la Grisvard do not work and instead, we apply the Kondratiev approach. We describe the procedure in detail to keep track of the dependence in $\varepsilon$ in all the estimates. The main originality of this study lies in the fact that the limit problem is ill-posed in any framework.

The performance of a newly built omega type electrostatic analyzer designed to act as an in-line charge-state purification system for ions in the keV energy range is reported. The analyzer consists of a set of four consecutive electrostatic 140{\deg} concentric cylindrical electrodes enclosed by Matsuda electrodes. This setup was recently tested and validated using $O^{5+}$ , $Ar^{9+}$ and $Xe^{20+}$ ion beams at an energy of 14 qkeV at the ARIBE facility. A resolving power of 10.5 and a transmission of 100 % of the desired charge state are measured allowing a good purification of incoming ion beams with charge states up to 10+ and a fairly good purification for charge states at least up to 20+. In comparison with other in-line solutions such as Wien filter, our system has the advantage of being purely electrostatic and therefore lacking common drawbacks as for example hysteresis.

We use the inside-outside duality approach proposed by Kirsch-Lechleiter to identify transmission eigenvalues associated with artificial backgrounds. We prove that for well chosen artificial backgrounds, in particular for the ones with zero index of refraction at the inclusion location, one obtains a necessary and sufficient condition characterizing transmission eigenvalues via the spectrum of the modified far field operator. We also complement the existing literature with a convergence result for the invisible generalized incident field associated with the transmission eigenvalues.
