1. Rapid reduction of depressive symptoms with minimal dissociation: results from the KET01-02 and KET01-03 trials with oral prolonged-release (PR) ketamine KET01

Abstract: Introduction Current ketamine-based therapies for treatment-resistant depression (TRD) often induce dissociative effects. A novel oral PR ketamine formulation (KET01) results in a low and delayed peak concentration of ketamine, high hydroxynorketamine concentration, and is associated with limited dissociative properties. Objectives To investigate efficacy, safety, and pharmacokinetics of KET01 in TRD. Methods KET01-02 was a randomized, double-blind phase 2 trial in outpatients with TRD comparing adjunct 120 mg (n=42) or 240 mg (n=40) oral KET01 once-daily for 3 weeks to placebo (PBO, n=40). The primary endpoint was change from baseline in the MADRS mean score on Day 21. KET01-03 was a randomized, double-blind, cross-over phase I trial in 26 healthy volunteers comparing single doses of 240 mg oral KET01 and 84 mg an approved intranasal formulation of eketamine. The primary endpoint was maximum change of Clinician-Administered Dissociative States Scale (CADSS) score from baseline. Results KET01-03 trial; the mean (±SD) maximum change of CADSS score within 24 hours after dosing was 29.6±12.5 for intranasal eketamine and 0.7±1.7 for KET01 (p4 and increase from baseline. At 7 hours post first KET01 dose (240 mg), plasma concentration of ketamine (38.7±27.0 ng/ml) was lower than its metabolites norketamine (267.5±81.6 ng/ml) and hydroxynorketamine (190.2±85.5 ng/ml). 240 mg/day KET01 induced clinically relevant reduction from baseline in MADRS score already within the first 7 hours of treatment (-7.65; Δ vs PBO: -2.22, n.s.), with a statistically significant separation on Day 4 (-10.02; Δ vs PBO: -3.66, p=0.020) and Day 7 (-12.21; Δ vs PBO: -3.95, p=0.042). MADRS score decrease was sustained throughout Day 21 (-13.15; Δ vs PBO: -1.82, n.s.), and during 4-week follow-up (-12.51; Δ vs PBO: -3.35, n.s.). Treatment-emergent adverse events occurred in 47.5%, 50.0%, and 62.5% of patients in the PBO, 120 mg/day, and 240 mg/day KET01 group, respectively. Conclusions Oral 240 mg/day KET01 induces a rapid, and clinically relevant reduction of depressive symptoms with only minimal signs of dissociation, potentially due to lower ketamine levels and increased norketamine and hydroxynorketamine levels compared to intravenous administration. Abstract: Abstract Measurements of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 resonance production via its $$K^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ K + π - decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momenta 40 and 80 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=8.8$$ s NN = 8.8 and 12.3 $$\text{ GeV }$$ GeV ) are presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The template method was used to extract the $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 signal. Transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The mean multiplicities of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 mesons were found to be $$(35.1 \pm 1.3 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 3.6 \mathrm {(sys))} \cdot 10^{-3}$$ ( 35.1 ± 1.3 ( stat ) ± 3.6 ( sys ) ) · 10 - 3 at 40 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c and $$(58.3 \pm 1.9 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 4.9 \mathrm {(sys))} \cdot 10^{-3}$$ ( 58.3 ± 1.9 ( stat ) ± 4.9 ( sys ) ) · 10 - 3 at 80 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c . The NA61/SHINE results are compared with the Epos1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data. The transverse mass spectra of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K ∗ ( 892 ) 0 mesons and other particles previously reported by NA61/SHINE were fitted within the Blast-Wave model. The transverse flow velocities are close to 0.1–0.2 of the speed of light and are significantly smaller than the ones determined in heavy nucleus-nucleus interactions at the same beam momenta.

Abstract: Abstract The production of $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 mesons in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 $$\text{ GeV }/c$$ GeV / c ( $$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$$ s NN = 17.3 $$\text{ GeV }$$ GeV ) was measured with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. Double-differential distributions were obtained in transverse momentum and rapidity. The mean multiplicity of $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 was determined to be $$0.162 \pm 0.001 (stat.) \pm 0.011 (sys.)$$ 0.162 ± 0.001 ( s t a t . ) ± 0.011 ( s y s . ) . The results on $$K^{0}_{S}$$ K S 0 production are compared with model predictions (EPOS 1.99, SMASH 2.0, PHSD and UrQMD 3.4 models) as well as with published world data.

Abstract: Abstract Double-differential yields of $${\Xi \left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ 1530 0 and $${\overline{\Xi }\left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ ¯ 1530 0 resonances produced in p+p interactions were measured at a laboratory beam momentum of 158 $$\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ GeV / c . This measurement is the first of its kind in p+p interactions below LHC energies. It was performed at the CERN SPS by the NA61/SHINE collaboration. Double-differential distributions in rapidity and transverse momentum were obtained from a sample of $$26\times 10^6$$ 26 × 10 6 inelastic events. The spectra are extrapolated to full phase space resulting in mean multiplicity of $${\Xi \left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ 1530 0 ( $$6.73 \pm 0.25\pm 0.67)\times 10^{-4}$$ 6.73 ± 0.25 ± 0.67 ) × 10 - 4 and $${\overline{\Xi }\left( 1530\right) ^{0}} $$ Ξ ¯ 1530 0 ( $$2.71 \pm 0.18\pm 0.18)\times 10^{-4}$$ 2.71 ± 0.18 ± 0.18 ) × 10 - 4 . The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra and mean multiplicities were compared to predictions of string-hadronic and statistical model calculations.

Abstract: Abstract Measurements of multiplicity fluctuations of identified hadrons produced in inelastic p+p interactions at 31, 40, 80, and 158 $$\text {Ge}\text {V}/c$$ Ge / c beam momentum are presented. Three different measures of multiplicity fluctuations are used: the scaled variance $$\omega $$ ω and strongly intensive measures $$\Sigma $$ Σ and $$\Delta $$ Δ . These fluctuation measures involve second and first moments of joint multiplicity distributions. Data analysis is preformed using the Identity method which corrects for incomplete particle identification. Strongly intensive quantities are calculated in order to allow for a direct comparison to corresponding results on nucleus–nucleus collisions. The results for different hadron types are shown as a function of collision energy. A comparison with predictions of string-resonance Monte-Carlo models: Epos, Smash and Venus, is also presented.

Abstract: Abstract The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of $$\pi ^{-}$$ π - mesons produced in central $${}^{40}$$ 40 Ar+ $${}^{45}$$ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150 $$A\,\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!\textit{c}$$ A Ge V / c . Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± , $$K^\pm $$ K ± , p and $$\bar{p}$$ p ¯ produced in the 20% most central $$^7$$ 7 Be+ $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $${\mathrm{Ge} \mathrm{V}}\!/\!c$$ Ge V / c . The energy dependence of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± / $$\pi ^\pm $$ π ± ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $$K^\pm $$ K ± transverse mass distributions are close to those found in inelastic p+p reactions. The new results are compared to the world data on p+p and Pb+Pb collisions as well as to predictions of the Epos, Urqmd, Ampt, Phsd and Smash models.

Abstract: Abstract A measurement of charged hadron pair correlations in two-dimensional $$\Delta \eta \Delta \phi $$ Δ η Δ ϕ space is presented. The analysis is based on total 30 million central Be + Be collisions observed in the NA61/SHINE detector at the CERN SPS for incident beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A, and 150A $$\text {Ge} \text {V}/c$$ Ge / c . Measurements were carried out for unlike-sign and like-sign charge hadron pairs independently. The $$C(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi )$$ C ( Δ η , Δ ϕ ) correlation functions were compared with results from a similar analysis on p + p interactions at similar beam momenta per nucleon. General trends of the back-to-back correlations are similar in central Be + Be collisions and p + p interactions, but are suppressed in magnitude due to the increased combinatorial background. Predictions from the Epos and UrQMD models are compared to the measurements. Evolution of an enhancement around $$(\Delta \eta ,\Delta \phi ) = (0,0)$$ ( Δ η , Δ ϕ ) = ( 0 , 0 ) with incident energy is observed in central Be + Be collisions. It is not predicted by both models and almost non-existing in proton–proton collisions at the same momentum per nucleon.

This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^{-}$$ π - mesons produced in the 5% most central $$^7$$ 7 Be + $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150 $$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c obtained by the so-called $$h^-$$ h - method which does not require any particle identification. The shape of the transverse mass spectra differs from the shapes measured in central Pb + Pb collisions and inelastic p+p interactions. The normalized width of the rapidity distribution decreases with increasing collision energy and is in between the results for inelastic nucleon–nucleon and central Pb + Pb collisions. The mean multiplicity of pions per wounded nucleon in central $$^7$$ 7 Be + $$^9$$ 9 Be collisions is close to that in central Pb + Pb collisions up to 75 $$A\,\text{ GeV }\!/\!c$$ A GeV / c . However, at the top SPS energy the result lies between those for nucleon–nucleon and Pb + Pb interactions. The results are discussed in the context of predictions for the onset of deconfinement at the CERN SPS collision energies.

Abstract: Abstract The production of $$\Xi (1321)^{-}$$ Ξ ( 1321 ) - and $$\overline{\Xi }(1321)^{+}$$ Ξ ¯ ( 1321 ) + hyperons in inelastic p+p interactions is studied in a fixed target experiment at a beam momentum of 158 $$\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge / c . Double differential distributions in rapidity $${y}$$ y and transverse momentum $$p_{T}$$ p T are obtained from a sample of 33M inelastic events. They allow to extrapolate the spectra to full phase space and to determine the mean multiplicity of both $${\Xi }{^-} $$ Ξ - and $$\overline{\Xi }{^+} $$ Ξ ¯ + . The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra are compared to transport model predictions. The $${\Xi }{^-} $$ Ξ - mean multiplicity in inelastic p+p interactions at 158 $$\hbox {Ge}\hbox {V}\!/\!c$$ Ge / c is used to quantify the strangeness enhancement in A+A collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair.

Abstract: Abstract The measurement of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 resonance production via its $$K^{+}\pi ^{-}$$ K+π- decay mode in inelastic p+p collisions at beam momentum 158 $$\text{ Ge }\text{ V }\!/\!c$$ GeV/c ($$\sqrt{s_{NN}}=17.3$$ sNN=17.3 $$\text{ Ge }\text{ V }$$ GeV ) is presented. The data were recorded by the NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The template method was used to extract the $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 signal and double-differential transverse momentum and rapidity spectra were obtained. The full phase-space mean multiplicity of $$K^{*}(892)^0$$ K∗(892)0 mesons was found to be $$(78.44 \pm 0.38 \mathrm {(stat)} \pm 6.0 \mathrm {(sys)) \cdot 10^{-3}}$$ (78.44±0.38(stat)±6.0(sys))·10-3 . The NA61/SHINEresults are compared with the Epos1.99 and Hadron Resonance Gas models as well as with world data from p+p and nucleus–nucleus collisions.

Abstract: Abstract Results on $$\phi $$ ϕ meson production in inelastic $$p + p$$ p+p collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. They are derived from data collected by the NA61/SHINE fixed target experiment, by means of invariant mass spectra fits in the $$\phi \rightarrow K^+ K^- $$ ϕ→K+K- decay channel. They include the first ever measured double differential spectra of $$\phi $$ ϕ mesons as a function of rapidity $$y$$ y and transverse momentum $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT for proton beam momenta of $$80 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 80GeV/c and $$158 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 158GeV/c , as well as single differential spectra of $$y$$ y or $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT for beam momentum of $$40 \, \hbox {GeV}/c$$ 40GeV/c . The corresponding total $$\phi $$ ϕ yields per inelastic $$p + p$$ p+p event are obtained. These results are compared with existing data on $$\phi $$ ϕ meson production in $$p + p$$ p+p collisions. The comparison shows consistency but superior accuracy of the present measurements. The emission of $$\phi $$ ϕ mesons in $$p + p$$ p+p reactions is confronted with that occurring in $$\mathrm{Pb} + \mathrm{Pb}$$ Pb+Pb collisions, and the experimental results are compared with model predictions. It appears that none of the considered models can properly describe all the experimental observations.

Abstract: Abstract Measurements of the $$\pi ^\pm $$ π± , $$K^\pm $$ K± , and proton double differential yields emitted from the surface of the 90-$$\hbox {cm}$$ cm -long carbon target (T2K replica) were performed for the incoming $$31\,$$ 31 $$\hbox {GeV}\!/\!c$$ GeV/c protons with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS using data collected during 2010 run. The double differential $$\pi ^\pm $$ π± yields were measured with increased precision compared to the previously published NA61/SHINE results, while the $$K^\pm $$ K± and proton yields were obtained for the first time. A strategy for dealing with the dependence of the results on the incoming proton beam profile is proposed. The purpose of these measurements is to reduce significantly the (anti)neutrino flux uncertainty in the T2K long-baseline neutrino experiment by constraining the production of (anti)neutrino ancestors coming from the T2K target.

Abstract: Abstract Measurements of inclusive spectra and mean multiplicities of $$\pi ^\pm $$ π± , K$$^\pm $$ ± , p and $${\bar{\text {p}}}$$ p¯ produced in inelastic p + p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 $$\text{ GeV }/c$$ GeV/c ($$\sqrt{s} = $$ s= 6.3, 7.7, 8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 $$\text{ GeV }$$ GeV , respectively) were performed at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer. Spectra are presented as function of rapidity and transverse momentum and are compared to predictions of current models. The measurements serve as the baseline in the NA61/SHINE study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter.

Abstract: Abstract We present measurements of $$\rho ^0$$ ρ 0 , $$\omega $$ ω and K $$^{*0}$$ ∗ 0 spectra in $$\pi ^{-} + $$ π - + C production interactions at 158 $$\text{ GeV }{/}\text{ c }$$ GeV / c and $$\rho ^0$$ ρ 0 spectra at 350 $$\text{ GeV }{/}\text{ c }$$ GeV / c using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. Spectra are presented as a function of the Feynman’s variable $$x_\text {F}$$ x F in the range $$0< x_\text {F} < 1$$ 0 < x F < 1 and $$0< x_\text {F} < 0.5$$ 0 < x F < 0.5 for 158 and 350 $$\text{ GeV }{/}\text{ c }$$ GeV / c respectively. Furthermore, we show comparisons with previous measurements and predictions of several hadronic interaction models. These measurements are essential for a better understanding of hadronic shower development and for improving the modeling of cosmic ray air showers.

Abstract: This paper presents multiplicity measurements of $K^0_{\textrm{S}}$, $\Lambda$, and $\bar{\Lambda}$ produced in 120 GeV/$c$ proton-carbon interactions. The measurements were made using data collected at the NA61/SHINE experiment during two different periods. Decays of these neutral hadrons impact the measured $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, $p$ and $\bar{p}$ multiplicities in the 120 GeV/$c$ proton-carbon reaction, which are crucial inputs for long-baseline neutrino experiment predictions of neutrino beam flux. The double-differential multiplicities presented here will be used to more precisely measure charged-hadron multiplicities in this reaction, and to re-weight neutral hadron production in neutrino beam Monte Carlo simulations.

Abstract: We present a measurement of the momentum spectra of $\pi^\pm$, K$^\pm$, p$^\pm$, $\Lambda$, $\bar{\Lambda}$ and K$^{0}_{S}$ produced in interactions of negatively charged pions with carbon nuclei at beam momenta of 158 and 350 GeV/c. The total production cross sections are measured as well. The data were collected with the large-acceptance spectrometer of the fixed target experiment NA61/SHINE at the CERN SPS. The obtained double-differential $p$-$p_T$ spectra provide a unique reference data set with unprecedented precision and large phase-space coverage to tune models used for the simulation of particle production in extensive air showers in which pions are the most numerous projectiles.

22. Development of the Scintillating Fiber Timing Detector for the Mu3e Experiment

Abstract: We present and discuss the development and performance of a compact scintillating fiber (SciFi) detector for timing to be used in the Mu3e experiment at very high particle rates. The SciFi detector is read out with multichannel silicon photomuiltipliers (SiPM) arrays at both ends to achieve the best timing performance. Mu3e is a new experiment under preparation at the Paul Scherrer Institute to search for charged Lepton Flavor Violation in the rare neutrinoless muon decay mu->eee using the most intense continuous surface muon beam in the world. The Mu3e detector is based on thin high-voltage monolithic active silicon pixel sensors (HV-MAPS) for very precise tracking in conjunction with scintillating fibers and scintillating tiles coupled to SiPMs for accurate timing measurements and it is designed to operate at very high intensities. In order to reach a single event sensitivity of 10^-16 for this rare mu->eee muon decay, all backgrounds must be rejected well below this level. To suppress all forms of accidental background, a very thin SciFi detector (thickness < 0.2% of a radiation length X_0) with a time resolution of 250 ps, efficiency in excess of 96%, and spatial resolution of 100 micron has been developed. In this paper we report on the development, construction, and performance of this SciFi detector. Different scintillating fiber types have been evaluated and various assembly procedures have been tested to achieve the best performance. The compact size, fast response, good timing, high spatial resolution, insensitivity to magnetic fields, and adaptable geometry make SciFi detectors suitable for a variety of applications., Comment: To be submitted to Jurnal of Instrumentation

Abstract: The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of $\pi^{-}$ mesons produced in $central$ ${}^{40}$Ar+${}^{45}$Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13$A$, 19$A$, 30$A$, 40$A$, 75$A$ and 150$A$ GeV/$c$. Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions -- mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity -- are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. Abstract: The production cross section of 30.92 GeV/$c$ protons on carbon is measured by the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS by means of beam attenuation in a copy (replica) of the 90-cm-long target of the T2K neutrino oscillation experiment. The employed method for direct production cross-section estimation minimizes model corrections for elastic and quasi-elastic interactions. The obtained production cross section is $\sigma_\mathrm{prod}~=~227.6~\pm~0.8\mathrm{(stat)}~_{-~3.2}^{+~1.9}\mathrm{(sys)}~{-~0.8}\mathrm{(mod)}$ mb. It is in agreement with previous NA61/SHINE results obtained with a thin carbon target, while providing improved precision with a total fractional uncertainty of less than 2$\%$. This direct measurement is performed to reduce the uncertainty on the T2K neutrino flux prediction associated with the re-weighting of the interaction rate of neutrino-yielding hadrons., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: The Mu3e experiment aims to find or exclude the lepton flavour violating decay $\mu \rightarrow eee$ at branching fractions above $10^{-16}$. A first phase of the experiment using an existing beamline at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is designed to reach a single event sensitivity of $2\cdot 10^{-15}$. We present an overview of all aspects of the technical design and expected performance of the phase~I Mu3e detector. Abstract: The production of $\Xi(1321)^{-}$ and $\overline{\Xi}(1321)^{+}$ hyperons in inelastic p+p interactions is studied in a fixed target experiment at a beam momentum of 158 GeV/textit{c}. Double differential distributions in rapidity y and transverse momentum $p_{T}$ are obtained from a sample of 33M inelastic events. They allow to extrapolate the spectra to full phase space and to determine the mean multiplicity of both $\Xi^{-}$ and $\overline{\Xi}^{+}$. The rapidity and transverse momentum spectra are compared to transport model predictions. The $\Xi^{-}$ mean multiplicity in inelastic p+p interactions at 158~\GeVc is used to quantify the strangeness enhancement in A+A collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair.

Abstract: Pentaquark states have been extensively investigated theoretically in the context of the constituent quark model. In this paper results of an experimental search for pentaquarks in the \Xim\pim, \Xim\pip, \Xip\pim and \Xip\pip invariant mass spectra in proton-proton interactions at $\sqrt{s}$=17.3~\GeV are presented. Previous possible evidence from the NA49 collaboration of the existence of a narrow \Xim\pim baryon resonance in p+p interactions is not confirmed with almost 10 times greater event statistics. The search was performed using the \NASixtyOne detector which reuses the main components of the NA49 apparatus. No signal was observed with either the selection cuts of NA49 or newly optimised cuts., Comment: The papaer quote 33 M events while in reality after describted event cuts number reduced to 26M

Abstract: The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS is performing a uniqe study of the phase diagram of strongly interacting matter by varying collision energy and nuclear mass number of colliding nuclei. In central Pb+Pb collisions the NA49 experiment found structures in the energy dependence of several observables in the CERN SPS energy range that had been predicted for the transition to a deconfined phase. New measurements of NA61/SHINE find intriguing similarities in p+p interactions for which no deconfinement transition is expected at SPS energies. Possible implications will be discussed.

Abstract: Precise knowledge of hadron production rates in the generation of neutrino beams is necessary for accelerator-based neutrino experiments to achieve their physics goals. NA61/SHINE, a large-acceptance hadron spectrometer, has recorded hadron+nucleus interactions relevant to ongoing and future long-baseline neutrino experiments at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. This paper presents three analyses of interactions of 60 GeV/$c$ $\pi^+$ with thin, fixed carbon and beryllium targets. Integrated production and inelastic cross sections were measured for both of these reactions. In an analysis of strange, neutral hadron production, differential production multiplicities of $K^0_{S}$, $\Lambda$ and anti-$\Lambda$ were measured. Lastly, in an analysis of charged hadron production, differential production multiplicities of $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, $K^+$, $K^-$ and protons were measured. These measurements will enable long-baseline neutrino experiments to better constrain predictions of their neutrino flux in order to achieve better precision on their neutrino cross section and oscillation measurements.

Abstract: This paper presents measurements of production cross sections and inelastic cross sections for the following reactions: 60 GeV/$c$ protons with C, Be, Al targets and 120 GeV/$c$ protons with C and Be targets. The analysis was performed using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. First measurements were obtained using protons at 120 GeV/$c$, while the results for protons at 60 GeV/$c$ were compared with previously published measurements. These interaction cross section measurements are critical inputs for neutrino flux prediction in current and future accelerator-based long-baseline neutrino experiments.

Abstract: Results on $\phi$ meson production in inelastic p+p collisions at CERN SPS energies are presented. They are derived from data collected by the NA61/SHINE fixed target experiment, by means of invariant mass spectra fits in the $\phi \to K^+K^-$ decay channel. They include the first ever measured double differential spectra of $\phi$ mesons as a function of rapidity $y$ and transverse momentum $p_T$ for proton beam momenta of 80 GeV/c and 158 GeV/c, as well as single differential spectra of $y$ or $p_T$ for beam momentum of 40 GeV/c. The corresponding total $\phi$ yields per inelastic p+p event are obtained. These results are compared with existing data on $\phi$ meson production in p+p collisions. The comparison shows consistency but superior accuracy of the present measurements. The emission of $\phi$ mesons in p+p reactions is confronted with that occurring in Pb+Pb collisions, and the experimental results are compared with model predictions. It appears that none of the considered models can properly describe all the experimental observables.

Abstract: This paper presents several measurements of total production cross sections and total inelastic cross sections for the following reactions: $\pi^{+}$+C, $\pi^{+}$+Al, $K^{+}$+C, $K^{+}$+Al at 60 GeV/c, $\pi^{+}$+C and $\pi^{+}$+Al at 31 GeV/c . Abstract: Rosai-Dorfman (RDD) is a rare histiocytic syndrome with variable clinical characteristics and extranodal involvement in more than 43% of the patients. This mini-review presents an overview of the literature on Rosai-Dorfman disease. The histological features and the current understanding of the management and prognosis are discussed. A case of a 61-year-old patient with a rare diagnosis of Rosai-Dorfman disease is also presented, as well as the process of its setting and treatment. The diagnosis is set by extensive radiologic and interventional procedures, including multiple biopsies, morphological examinations, and imaging techniques. Most important for the diagnosis appeared to be the pathology showing characteristic features of Rosai-Dorfman disease in the intra-abdominal lymph nodes performed twice showing characteristic extensive fibrosis. In addition, multiple dilated sinuses were filled with macrophages and histiocytes while the immunohistochemical examination pointed very likely to RDD with increased amount of plasma cells. Abstract: Biofilms are a well-known multifactorial virulence factor with a pivotal role in chronic bacterial infections. Their pathogenicity is determined by the combination of strain-specific mechanisms of virulence and the biofilm extracellular matrix (ECM) protecting the bacteria from the host immune defense and the action of antibacterials. The successful antibiofilm agents should combine antibacterial activity and good biocompatibility with the capacity to penetrate through the ECM. The objective of the study is the elaboration of biofilm-ECM-destructive drug delivery systems: mixed polymeric micelles (MPMs) based on a cationic poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)-b-poly(ε-caprolactone)-b-poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA35-b-PCL70-b-PDMAEMA35) and a non-ionic poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO100-b-PPO65-b-PEO100) triblock copolymers, loaded with ciprofloxacin or azithromycin. The MPMs were applied on 24 h pre-formed biofilms of Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (laboratory strains and clinical isolates). The results showed that the MPMs were able to destruct the biofilms, and the viability experiments supported drug delivery. The biofilm response to the MPMs loaded with the two antibiotics revealed two distinct patterns of action. These were registered on the level of both bacterial cell-structural alterations (demonstrated by scanning electron microscopy) and the interaction with host tissues (ex vivo biofilm infection model on skin samples with tests on nitric oxide and interleukin (IL)-17A production). Abstract: The electromagnetic structure of $^{140}$Sm was studied in a low-energy Coulomb excitation experiment with a radioactive ion beam from the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. The $2^+$ and $4^+$ states of the ground-state band and a second $2^+$ state were populated by multi-step excitation. The analysis of the differential Coulomb excitation cross sections yielded reduced transition probabilities between all observed states and the spectroscopic quadrupole moment for the $2_1^+$ state. The experimental results are compared to large-scale shell model calculations and beyond-mean-field calculations based on the Gogny D1S interaction with a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian formalism. Simpler geometric and algebraic models are also employed to interpret the experimental data. The results indicate that $^{140}$Sm shows considerable $\gamma$ softness, but in contrast to earlier speculation no signs of shape coexistence at low excitation energy. Abstract: Measurements of hadron production in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c are performed using the NA61/ SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2009 using a graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Inelastic and production cross sections as well as spectra of $\pi^\pm$, $K^\pm$, p, $K^0_S$ and $\Lambda$ are measured with high precision. These measurements are essential for improved calculations of the initial neutrino fluxes in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. Abstract: Garden thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) is an annual herbaceous plant of the family Lamiaceae. It can be found both in the wild and as a cultivated plant in Bulgaria. This study is aimed at assessing the garden thyme essential oil composition and antioxidant activities, which were collected from three different areas in Bulgaria. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The main compounds in the garden thyme essential oils (over 2%) were as follows: thymol (42.88–53.55%), p-cymene (14.25–25.51%), γ-terpinene (6.58–15.51%), borneol (2.75–3.57%), carvacrol (2.00–3.02%), β-linalool (2.07–2.31%), cis-sabinene hydrate (4.05%), eucalyptol (1.08–3.65%), α-terpinene (1.01–3.24%), carvacrol methyl ether (1.18–3.02%), and thymol methyl ether (2.26–3.16%). The oils were mainly composed of oxygenated phenyl propanoids, and all the essential oils belonged to the chemotype thymol. Antioxidant activities were measured by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical) and ABTS [2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] assays. All the samples exhibited antioxidant activity relative to the DPPH radical (from 143.20 mM TE/mL to 165.91 mM TE/mL) and by the ABTS method (from 121.67 mM TE/mL to 127.62 mM TE/mL). Abstract: The self‐organization of microbes into biofilms provides multiple benefits including tolerance to mechanical stress and resistance to immune defences and antibiotics. Coupled to a compromised mucociliary function, these traits have dire consequences in cystic fibrosis patients – persistent infections are the main reason for morbidity and mortality. Thereby, disease progression is associated with universal colonization by Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which selects for a slimy phenotype to adapt to the lung microenvironment. Recognizing this, drug‐delivery vehicles that break down the mucoid extracellular matrix made of alginate are designed to enable better penetration and biofilm dispersion. In parallel, a protective layer responds to the proteolytic activity of the pathogen and thus controls drug availability. To realize this architecture, silica nanoparticles are loaded with imipenem, and then coated with elastin and alginate lyase in a layer‐by‐layer fashion using ultrasound. The nanoscale formulations eradicate up to 80% of the total biomass and reduce the bacterial viability in biofilms by 3 logs, considerably outperforming the bulk antibiotic in vitro, whereby the effects are correlated to changes in the viscoelasticity. Furthermore, the stimuli‐responsive nanocarriers are safe and effective in animal models of P. aeruginosa infection, presenting a considerable therapeutic promise in the challenging context of lung diseases. 50. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF PROPOLIS FROM RAZGRAD.

Abstract: Propolis is a natural product, mainly used in the past in traditional medicine, and today also used in pharmacy and official medicine in the form of tincture and other preparations. The object of the present work is to determine the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of propolis originating in Northeastern Bulgaria, with a view to its application in technology. The propolis sample has a high content of mesophilic bacteria - 1.6 × 104, yeasts and molds - 8.4 × 103. The main components (over 2%) are: benzyl-(E)-caffeate (11.27%), squalene (10.51%), glucose (9.27%), manose (7.38%), fructose (6.60%), dihydrochrysin (5.91%), pinobanksin-3-butenoate (4.92%), pinobanksin (3.74%), galangin (3.77%), galactose (3.49%), caffeic acid isomer 1 (2.71%), caffeic acid isomer 2 (2.67%), and (E)-p-coumaric acid (2.25%). The total phenol content is 19.58 mg GAE/g. The antioxidant activity was investigated by three methods: DPPH (1452.85 mMTE/g), FRAP (688.58 mMTE/g) and ABTS (1352.45 mMTE/g). The low content of total phenols, the low antioxidant activity and, above all, the microbial seeding on the surface of propolis, are the reason for its application mainly in technology.
