The paper presents the results of the electrodeposition of nickel composite coatings reinforced with the nano size SiC ceramic particles. The type and size of the ceramic particles or organic additives used play a important role during electrodeposition processes. A Watts type galvanic bath with various organic additives was used. These additives were: 2-sulfobenzoic acid imide, dioctyl sulfosuccinate sodium salt (DSS), sodium dodecyl sulfate, tris (hydroxymethyl) aminomethane and hexamethyldisilizane. The nickel composite coating was electrodeposited on a 2xxx aluminum alloy series substrate (EN-AW 2017) with zinc interlayer. The work concerns the determination of the impact of the change in the zeta potential of SiC nanoceramic particles used on properties of composite coatings (wear resistance, corrosion, etc.). The paper characterized the composite nickel coatings on aluminum alloy using SEM techniques, wear resistance tests by TABER method and coating adhesion to the substrate using the “scratch test” method. The corrosion resistance of coatings was also tested using electrochemical methods. The research allowed to determine the effect of SiC nanoceramic particle size on the value of the zeta potential in the model KCl solution.

The aim of the present work was to determine the influence of the microstructural evolution of copper single crystals with the initial orientations of and after cold drawing on their corrosion resistance. Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron backscattering diffraction were used to characterize the microstructural changes. To evaluate the corrosion resistance after deformation, open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization analyses were conducted. The microstructural observations showed the presence of dislocation cell structures and shear bands in deformed sample with initial orientation single crystal, as well as a strongly-developed substructure in sample . The material with initial orientation of was more resistive in analyzed medium than material with the initial orientation of .

Studies concerned the effect of the applied organic additives on properties of composite coatings such as: microstructure, microhardness, adhesion to the substrate, corrosion resistance and roughness. The structure of the coatings was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy. Based on the studies of zeta potential it was found that the bath modification had a significant impact on the amount of the ceramic phase embedded in metal matrix. The tests conducted in a model 0.01 M KCl solution were not fully representative of the true behavior of particles in a Watts bath.

Magnesium (Mg) alloys have become a potential material for orthopedic implants due to their unnecessary implant removal, biocompatibility, and mechanical integrity until fracture healing. This study examined the in vitro and in vivo degradation of an Mg fixation screw composed of Mg-0.45Zn-0.45Ca (ZX00, in wt.%). With ZX00 human-sized implants, in vitro immersion tests up to 28 days under physiological conditions, along with electrochemical measurements were performed for the first time. In addition, ZX00 screws were implanted in the diaphysis of sheep for 6, 12, and 24 weeks to assess the degradation and biocompatibility of the screws in vivo. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), micro-computed tomography (μCT), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and histology, the surface and cross-sectional morphologies of the corrosion layers formed, as well as the bone-corrosion-layer-implant interfaces, were analyzed. Our findings from in vivo testing demonstrated that ZX00 alloy promotes bone healing and the formation of new bone in direct contact with the corrosion products. In addition, the same elemental composition of corrosion products was observed for in vitro and in vivo experiments; however, their elemental distribution and thicknesses differ depending on the implant location. Our findings suggest that the corrosion resistance was microstructure-dependent. The head zone was the least corrosion-resistant, indicating that the production procedure could impact the corrosion performance of the implant. In spite of this, the formation of new bone and no adverse effects on the surrounding tissues demonstrated that the ZX00 is a suitable Mg-based alloy for temporary bone implants.

In this study, the relationship between the extrusion ratio and the corrosion resistance of pure Mg deformed using extrusion with an oscillating die (KoBo) without preheating of the initial billet was investigated. The materials investigated in this study were extruded at high deformation ratios, R1 5:1, R2 7:1, and R3 10:1, resulting in significant grain refinement from the very coarse grains formed in the initial billet to a few µm in the KoBo-extruded samples at room temperature, which is not typical for hexagonal structures. Our research clearly shows that KoBo extrusion improves the corrosion performance of pure Mg, but there is no straightforward dependence between the extrusion ratios and corrosion resistance improvement. Although it was expected that the smallest grain size should provide the highest corrosion resistance, the dislocation density accumulated in the grain interiors during deformation at the highest extrusion ratio, R3 10:1, supports dissolution reactions. This, in turn, provides the answers for the greater grain size observed after deformation at R2 7:1, where dynamic recovery prevailed over dynamic recrystallization. This situation led to the annihilation of dislocation, leading to better corrosion resistance of the respective alloy. Therefore, the alloy with the greatest grain size has the best corrosion resistance.

A novel metal matrix composites (MMC) with Mg matrix reinforced with natural filler in the form of Didymosphenia geminata frustules (algae with distinctive siliceous shells) are presented in this work. Pulse plasma sintering (PPS) was used to manufacture Mg-based composites with 1, 5 and 10 vol.% ceramic filler. As a reference, pure Mg was sintered. The results show that the addition of 1 vol.% Didymosphenia geminata frustules to the Mg matrix increases its corrosion resistance by supporting passivation reactions, and do not affect the morphology of L929 fibroblasts. Addition of 5 vol.% the filler does not cause cytotoxic effects, but it supports microgalvanic reactions leading to the greater corrosion rate. Higher content than 5 vol.% the filler causes significant microgalvanic corrosion, as well as increases cytotoxicity due to the greater micro-galvanic effect of the composites containing 10 and 15 vol.% diatoms. The results of contact angle measurements show the hydrophilic character of the investigated materials, with slightly increase in numerical values with addition of amount of ceramic reinforcement. The addition of Didymosphenia geminata frustules causes changes in a thermo-elastic properties such as mean apparent value of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity (λ). The addition of siliceous reinforcement resulted in a linear decrease of CTE and reduction in thermal conductivity over the entire temperature range. With the increasing addition of Didymosphenia geminata frustules, an increase in strength with a decrease in compressive strain is observed. In all composites an increase in microhardness was attained.The results clearly indicate that filler in the form of Didymosphenia geminata frustules may significantly change the most important properties of pure Mg, indicating its wide potential in the application of Mg-based composites with a special focus on biomedical use.

In this study, powder metallurgy methods were used to fabricate Mg-7.5Li-3Al-Zn alloys from repowdered extruded alloys. Extruded alloys were powdered using ultrasonic atomization, and then laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and pulse plasma sintering (PPS) were used to consolidate the bulk materials. A comparison of the properties of the fabricated alloys with those of a conventionally extruded one was carried out using methods that characterized the microstructure and corrosion resistance. When compared to their conventionally extruded counterpart, LPBF and PPS materials exhibited refined microstructures with low enrichment in AlLi and coarse Al, Zn, Mn precipitates. The main drawback of the LPBF alloy, printed for the needs of this study, was its porosity, which had a negative effect on its corrosion. The presence of unrecrystallized particle boundaries in the PPS alloy was also unbeneficial with regard to corrosion. The advantage of the LPBF and PPS processes was the ability to change the proportion of α(Mg) to β(Li), which when the complete consolidation of the material is achievable, may increase the corrosion resistance of dual-structured Mg-Li alloys. The results show that powder metallurgy routes have a wide potential to be used for the manufacture of Mg-Li based alloys.

The present work aims to elucidate the role of microstructural changes induced by the extrusion with a forward backward oscillating die, thus verifying a novel approach to developing deformation methods for Mg-based alloys at ambient temperature. The main aim of this study was to show the process which enables the reduction of the hcp-structured AZ31 rods (40 mm in diameter) to the wires with diameters of 6 mm, 4 mm and 2 mm, without initial preheating of the billet. In contrary to the studies up to date, the significant microstructure refinement led to the decline in corrosion resistance of the wires with 6 mm and 4 mm diameters slightly relative to the original material. The highest extrusion ratio resulted in the formation of an ultrafine, equiaxed microstructure, which caused a tremendous corrosion resistance decrease. The significant decline in corrosion resistance of this alloy is a result of the highest number of HAGBs and is promoted by the accumulation of tangled dislocations. Summing up, the corrosion behaviors of the extruded alloys were mainly affected by the recrystallization stage that occurred during deformation, and not by the grain size alone.

This paper presents the results of an interdisciplinary project in which English poetry and performance studies were integrated into a poetry performance project for EFL students in a language education programme at a Japanese university. The project used the theories and methods of But?¯, a contemporary Japanese form of dance and visual art, to guide students through the process of interpretation, journaling, rehearsal, and performance. In Notational But?¯ practice, performers begin with a piece of literary or visual art, observe the images that stand out most to the performer, make notes about those images' qualities in a journal, and then reflect on the movement. Our students followed a similar process, accompanied with vocal work, as they memorised excerpts from English poetry. We found that the project helped students create personal connections with the literature and more fully integrate foreign culture experiences into their identity as Japanese speakers of English.
