Abstract

The neutron-rich rare isotope 190W is discussed as a candidate for a prolate-oblate transitional nucleus with maximum γ-softness. The collectivity of this isotope is assessed for the first time by the measurement of the reduced E2 transition probability of its first 2+ state to the ground state. The experiment employed the FAst TIming Array (FATIMA), comprised of 36 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, which was part of the DESPEC setup at GSI, Darmstadt. The 41+ and 21+ states of 190W were populated subsequently to the decay of its 127(12) μs isomeric Jπ=10− state. The mean lifetime of the 21+ state was determined to be τ=274(28) ps, which corresponds to a B(E2;21+→01+) value of 95(10) W.u. The results motivated a revision of previous calculations within an energy-density functional-based interacting boson model-2 approach, yielding E2 transition properties and spectroscopic quadrupole moments for tungsten isotopes. From comparison to theory, the new data suggest that 190W is at the transition from prolate to oblate structure along the W isotopic chain, which had previously been discussed as a nuclear shape-phase transition.

Abstract

Reduced transition probabilities have been extracted between excited, yrast states in the N=Z+2 nucleus 94Pd. The transitions of interest were observed following decays of the Iπ=14+, Ex=2129-keV isomeric state, which was populated following the projectile fragmentation of a 124Xe primary beam at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung accelerator facility as part of FAIR Phase-0. Experimental information regarding the reduced E2 transition strengths for the decays of the yrast 8+ and 6+ states was determined following isomer-delayed Eγ1−Eγ2−△T2,1 coincidence method, using the LaBr3(Ce)-based FATIMA fast-timing coincidence gamma-ray array, which allowed direct determination of lifetimes of states in 94Pd using the Generalized Centroid Difference (GCD) method. The experimental value for the half-life of the yrast 8+ state of 755(106) ps results in a reduced transition probability of B(E2:8→+6+) = 205−25+34 e2fm4, which enables a precise verification of shell-model calculations for this unique system, lying directly between the N=Z line and the N=50 neutron shell closure. The determined B(E2) value provides an insight into the purity of (g9/2)n configurations in competition with admixtures from excitations between the (lower) N=3pf and (higher) N=4gds orbitals for the first time. The results indicate weak collectivity expected for near-zero quadrupole deformation and an increasing importance of the T=0 proton-neutron interaction at N=48.

Abstract

The Zirconium (Z = 40) isotopic chain has attracted interest for more than four decades. The abrupt lowering of the energy of the first $2^+$ state and the increase in the transition strength B(E2; $2_1^\rightarrow 0_1^+$ going from $^{98}$Zr to $^{100}$Zr has been the first example of "quantum phase transition" in nuclear shapes, which has few equivalents in the nuclear chart. Although a multitude of experiments have been performed to measure nuclear properties related to nuclear shapes and collectivity in the region, none of the measured lifetimes were obtained using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method in the $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence mode where a gate on the direct feeding transition of the state of interest allows a strict control of systematical errors. This work reports the results of lifetime measurements for the first yrast excited states in $^{98-104}$Zr carried out to extract reduced transition probabilities. The new lifetime values in $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence and $\gamma$-single mode are compared with the results of former experiments. Recent predictions of the Interacting Boson Model with Configuration Mixing, the Symmetry Conserving Configuration Mixing model based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach and the Monte Carlo Shell Model are presented and compared with the experimental data.

Abstract

Abstract Atomic nuclei serve as prime laboratories for investigations of complex quantum phenomena, where minor nucleon rearrangements cause significant structural changes. 190Pb is the heaviest known neutron-deficient Pb isotope that can exhibit three distinct shapes: prolate, oblate, and spherical, with nearly degenerate excitation energies. Here we report on the combined results from three state-of-the-art measurements to directly observe these deformations in 190Pb. Contrary to earlier interpretations, we associate the collective yrast band as predominantly oblate, while the non-yrast band with higher collectivity follows characteristics of more deformed, predominantly prolate bands. Direct measurement of the $$E0({0}_{2}^{+}\to {0}_{1}^{+})$$ E 0 ( 0 2 + → 0 1 + ) transition and γ-e − coincidence relations allowed us to locate and firmly assign the $${0}_{2}^{+}$$ 0 2 + state in the level scheme and to discover a spherical $${2}_{3}^{+}$$ 2 3 + state at 1281(1) keV with $$B(E2;{2}_{3}^{+}\to {0}_{1}^{+})=1.2(3)$$ B ( E 2 ; 2 3 + → 0 1 + ) = 1.2 ( 3 ) W.u. These assignments are based purely on observed transition probabilities and monopole strength values, and do not rely on model calculations for their interpretation.

Abstract

The performance of two implementations of digital real-time interpolating constant fraction discriminator algorithms with respect to fast-timing lifetime measurements are investigated. The implementations integrated in two different digitizers were evaluated in terms of the effects of tuning parameters of the digital CFDs and the influence of different input amplitudes on the time resolution and time walk characteristics. Reference is made to the existing analog standard of fast-timing techniques. The study shows, that the timing performance of both modules is comparable to established fast-timing setups using analog constant fraction discriminators, but with the added benefit of digital processing. Both digitizer modules were found to be highly effective and user-friendly instruments for modern fast-timing requirements., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

Lifetimes of low-spin excited states in $^{98}$Zr were measured using the recoil-distance Doppler-shift technique and the Doppler-shift attenuation method. The nucleus of interest was populated in a $^{96}$Zr($^{18}$O,$^{16}$O)$^{98}$Zr two-neutron transfer reaction at the Cologne FN Tandem accelerator. Lifetimes of six low-spin excited states, of which four are unknown, were measured. The deduced $B(E2)$ values were compared with Monte Carlo shell model and interacting boson model with configuration mixing calculations. Abstract

We present results from an experiment dedicated to measure the lifetimes of the low-lying excited states of 205Bi. This nucleus was studied in the one-proton transfer reaction 204Pb(16O,15N)205Bi and the lifetimes of the 11 / 2 1 - , 7 / 2 1 - , 5 / 2 1 - , 7 / 2 2 - states were determined by utilizing the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method. Abstract

Excited states in 193Os were populated using a 192Os⁢( th., )⁢193Os thermal neutron capture reaction, with neutrons provided by the high-flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. Lifetimes of low-spin excited states were measured using the generalized centroid difference method. A total of eight mean lifetimes of low-lying excited states were determined for the first time, and limits for the lifetimes of three further excited states were established. Additionally, − angular correlations were analyzed to assign spins to previously known excited states up to 1 MeV, and extract multipole mixing ratios for several transitions. The new spectroscopic information is compared to calculations in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model, based on the nuclear density functional theory, to investigate the prolate-to-oblate shape phase transition, predicted to occur in the neutron rich ≈190 region.

Abstract

The lifetime of the 11/21+ state in the Sb131 nucleus was measured at the LOHENGRIN spectrometer of the Institut Laue-Langevin via neutron-induced fission of U235 using γ-ray fast-timing techniques. The obtained value of T1/2=3(2) ps, at the edge of the sensitivity of the experimental method, is the first result for the 11/21+ state half-life in neutron-rich Sb isotopes. The corresponding quadrupole reduced transition probability to the ground state is B(E2)=1.4-0.6+1.5W.u., indicating a noncollective nature of this state. Realistic shell-model calculations performed in a large valence space reproduce well the experimental value and point to a dominant 2+(Sn130) - πg7/2 configuration for the 11/21+ state, as expected in a weak-coupling scenario. At the same time, the sum of the quadrupole strength of the multiplet states is predicted to exceed the one of the Sn130 core as a consequence of the equal contribution of the proton and the proton-neutron quadrupole matrix elements, pointing to possible development of collectivity already in the close neighborhood of Sn132.

Abstract

The structure of the 11 / 2 1 + state in 131Sb was investigated at the LOHENGRIN spectrometer of Institut Laue-Langevin via neutron-induced fission of 235U and lifetime measurements, yielding T 1 / 2 = 3 ( 2 ) , at the edge of the sensitivity of the experimental method. This first result for the 11 / 2 1 + state half-life in neutron-rich Sb isotopes provides a quadrupole reduced transition probability to the ground state of B ( E 2 ) = 1.4 − 0.6 + 1.5 W.u., very close to the B ( E 2 ; 2 1 + → 0 1 + ) in 130Sn. Realistic shell-model calculations reproduce well both the experimental level scheme of 131Sb and the B ( E 2 ; 11 / 2 1 + → 7 / 2 1 + ) value, indicting a dominant 2 + ( 130 Sn ) ⊗ π g 7 / 2 core-proton coupled configuration for the 11 / 2 1 + state.

Abstract

The Zirconium (Z = 40) isotopic chain has attracted interest for more than four decades. The abrupt lowering of the energy of the first 2(+) state and the increase in the transition strength B(E2; 2(1)(+) -> 0(1)(+) ) going from Zr-98 to Zr-100 has been the first example of "quantum phase transition" in nuclear shapes, which has few equivalents in the nuclear chart. Although a multitude of experiments have been performed to measure nuclear properties related to nuclear shapes and collectivity in the region, none of the measured lifetimes were obtained using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method in the gamma gamma-coincidence mode where a gate on the direct feeding transition of the state of interest allows a strict control of systematical errors. This work reports the results of lifetime measurements for the first yrast excited states in Zr98-104 carried out to extract reduced transition probabilities. The new lifetime values in gamma gamma-coincidence and gamma-single mode are compared with the results of former experiments. Recent predictions of the Interacting Boson Model with Configuration Mixing, the Symmetry Conserving Configuration Mixing model based on the Hartree-Fock- Bogoliubov approach and the Monte Carlo Shell Model are presented and compared with the experimental data.

Abstract

The ≈100 mass region is of special interest due to a rapid shape transition, observed by going from neutron number 58 to 60, especially pronounced in the Zr isotopes, where 98Zr is weakly and 100Zr is strongly deformed. To further examine this intricate phenomenon, in this work lifetimes of low-lying excited states in the nuclei 99Zr and 99Nb were determined using fast-timing techniques and an experimental setup consisting of four LaBr3⁢(Ce) detectors. Neutron rich =99 fragments were produced in neutron induced fission and separated by the spectrometer LOHENGRIN at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, France. Experimental values are compared to two different calculations in the framework of the interacting boson-fermion model and discussed in the context of shape coexistence.
