The field of affective computing has seen significant advancements in exploring the relationship between emotions and emerging technologies. This paper presents a novel and valuable contribution to this field with the introduction of a comprehensive French multimodal dataset designed specifically for emotion recognition. The dataset encompasses three primary modalities: facial expressions, speech, and gestures, providing a holistic perspective on emotions. Moreover, the dataset has the potential to incorporate additional modalities, such as Natural Language Processing (NLP) to expand the scope of emotion recognition research. The dataset was curated through engaging participants in card game sessions, where they were prompted to express a range of emotions while responding to diverse questions. The study included 10 sessions with 20 participants (9 females and 11 males). The Bose-Hubbard model effectively describes bosons on a lattice with on-site interactions and nearest-neighbour hopping, serving as a foundational framework for understanding strong particle interactions and the superfluid to Mott insulator transition. This paper aims to rigorously establish the validity of a mean-field approximation for the dynamics of quantum systems in high dimension, using the Bose--Hubbard model on a square lattice as a case study. We prove a trace norm estimate between the one-lattice-site reduced density of the Schr\"odinger dynamics and the mean-field dynamics in the limit of large dimension. Here, the mean-field approximation is in the hopping amplitude and not in the interaction, leading to a very rich and non-trivial mean-field equation. This mean-field equation does not only describe the condensate, as is the case when the mean-field description comes from a large particle number limit averaging out the interaction, but it allows for a phase transition to a Mott insulator since it contains the full non-trivial interaction. Our work is a rigorous justification of a simple case of the highly successful dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for bosons, which somewhat surprisingly yields many qualitatively correct results in three dimensions.

Understanding the physics of planetary magma oceans has been the subject of growing efforts, in light of the increasing abundance of Solar system samples and extrasolar surveys. A rocky planet harboring such an ocean is likely to interact tidally with its host star, planetary companions, or satellites. To date, however, models of the tidal response and heat generation of magma oceans have been restricted to the framework of weakly viscous solids, ignoring the dynamical fluid behavior of the ocean beyond a critical melt fraction. Here we provide a handy analytical model that accommodates this phase transition, allowing for a physical estimation of the tidal response of lava worlds. We apply the model in two settings: The tidal history of the early Earth-Moon system in the aftermath of the giant impact; and the tidal interplay between short-period exoplanets and their host stars. For the former, we show that the fluid behavior of the Earth's molten surface drives efficient early Lunar recession to ${\sim} 25$ Earth radii within $10^4{-} 10^5$ years, in contrast with earlier predictions. For close-in exoplanets, we report on how their molten surfaces significantly change their spin-orbit dynamics, allowing them to evade spin-orbit resonances and accelerating their track towards tidal synchronization from a Gyr to Myr timescale. Moreover, we re-evaluate the energy budgets of detected close-in exoplanets, highlighting how the surface thermodynamics of these planets are likely controlled by enhanced, fluid-driven tidal heating, rather than vigorous insolation, and how this regime change substantially alters predictions for their surface temperatures., Comment: 32 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Omnidirectional (360-degree) video is rapidly gaining popularity due to advancements in immersive technologies like virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR). However, real-time streaming of such videos, especially in live mobile scenarios like unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), is challenged by limited bandwidth and strict latency constraints. Traditional methods, such as compression and adaptive resolution, help but often compromise video quality and introduce artifacts that degrade the viewer experience. Additionally, the unique spherical geometry of 360-degree video presents challenges not encountered in traditional 2D video. To address these issues, we initiated the 360-degree Video Super Resolution and Quality Enhancement Challenge. This competition encourages participants to develop efficient machine learning solutions to enhance the quality of low-bitrate compressed 360-degree videos, with two tracks focusing on 2x and 4x super-resolution (SR). In this paper, we outline the challenge framework, detailing the two competition tracks and highlighting the SR solutions proposed by the top-performing models. We assess these models within a unified framework, considering quality enhancement, bitrate gain, and computational efficiency. We study the pore-scale transport of a conservative scalar forming an advancing mixing front, which can be re-interpreted to predict instantaneous mixing-limited bimolecular reactions. We investigate this using a set of two-dimensional, high-resolution numerical simulations within a poly-disperse granular porous medium, covering a wide range of Peclet numbers. The aim is to show and exploit the direct link between pore-scale concentration gradients and mixing interface (midpoint concentration isocontour). We believe that such a perspective provides a complementary new lens for better understanding mixing and spreading in porous media. We develop and validate a theoretical model that quantifies the temporal elongation of the mixing interface and the upscaled reaction kinetics in mixing-limited systems accounting for pore-scale concentration fluctuations. Contrary to the classical belief that, given sufficient time, pore-scale fluctuations would eventually be washed out, we show that for $Pe>1$ advection generates pore-scale concentration fluctuations more rapidly than they can be fully dissipated. For such P'eclet numbers, once incomplete mixing is established, it will persist indefinitely.

The effective mixing behavior of solutes in porous media is fundamentally connected to the development of a local mixing interface between the two initial solutions, which is characterized by a complex lamellar structure. The deformation of the interface is controlled by the interplay of advection and diffusion, which generate the mechanisms of lamella stretching and shrinking, respectively. Based on the results of pore-scale numerical simulations, we develop a mechanistic single parabolic lamella model (SPLM) to capture the interface evolution across various temporal and P\'eclet number scales. The model shows near-perfect agreement with a 2D parallel plates scenario and promising results for a 3D porous medium. The SPLM model also establishes P\'eclet regimes for the equilibrium area and temporal regimes for the transient behavior of the interface. Thermal tides are atmospheric tides caused by variations in day-night insolation, similar to gravitational tides but with key differences. While both result in delayed mass redistribution, energy dissipation, and angular momentum exchanges between the planet and its host star, thermal tides can drive a planet's dynamics away from the rotational equilibrium states predicted by classical tidal theory. In this work, we present a novel closed-form solution for the thermotidal response of rocky planets. This general solution is derived from first principles, assuming either dry or moist adiabatic temperature profiles for the planet's atmosphere, and can be readily applied to study the long-term evolution of exoplanets in the habitable zones of their host stars. Despite relying on a small number of parameters, the model successfully captures the key features of the thermotidal torque predicted by General Circulation Models (GCMs). In this paper, we investigate the age-of-information (AoI) of a power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network, where multiple internet-of-things (IoT) devices transmit to a common gateway in a grant-free random fashion. More specifically, we consider a framed setup composed of multiple time slots, and resort to the $Q$-learning algorithm to properly define, in a distributed manner, the time slot and the power level each IoT device transmits within a frame. In the proposed AoI-QL-NOMA scheme, the $Q$-learning reward is adapted with the aim of minimizing the average AoI of the network, while only requiring a single feedback bit per time slot, in a frame basis. Our results show that AoI-QL-NOMA significantly improves the AoI performance compared to some recently proposed schemes, without significantly reducing the network throughput.

We evaluate the performance of the LoRaWAN Long-Range Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (LR-FHSS) technique using a device-level probabilistic strategy for code rate and header replica allocation. Specifically, we investigate the effects of different header replica and code rate allocations at each end-device, guided by a probability distribution provided by the network server. As a benchmark, we compare the proposed strategy with the standardized LR-FHSS data rates DR8 and DR9. Our numerical results demonstrate that the proposed strategy consistently outperforms the DR8 and DR9 standard data rates across all considered scenarios. Notably, our findings reveal that the optimal distribution rarely includes data rate DR9, while data rate DR8 significantly contributes to the goodput and energy efficiency optimizations.

The Internet of Things (IoT) empowers small devices to sense, react, and communicate, with applications ranging from smart ordinary household objects to complex industrial processes. To provide access to an increasing number of IoT devices, particularly in long-distance communication scenarios, a robust low-power wide area network (LPWAN) protocol becomes essential. A widely adopted protocol for this purpose is 6TiSCH, which builds upon the IEEE 802.15.4 standard. It introduces time-slotted channel hopping (TSCH) mode as a new medium access control (MAC) layer operating mode, in conjunction with IEEE 802.15.4g, which also defines both MAC and physical layer (PHY) layers and provides IPv6 connectivity for LPWAN. Notably, 6TiSCH has gained adoption in significant standards such as Wireless Intelligent Ubiquitous Networks (Wi-SUN). This study evaluates the scalability of 6TiSCH, with a focus on key parameters such as queue size, the maximum number of single-hop retries, and the slotframe length. Computational simulations were performed using an open-source simulator and obtained the following results: increasing the transmission queue size, along with adjusting the number of retries and slotframe length, leads to a reduction in the packet error rate (PER). Notably, the impact of the number of retries is particularly pronounced. Furthermore, the effect on latency varies based on the specific combination of these parameters as the network scales.

Earth-like planets in the habitable zone of low-mass stars undergo strong tidal effects that modify their spin states. These planets are expected to host dense atmospheres that can also play an important role in the spin evolution. On one hand, gravitational tides tend to synchronise the rotation with the orbital mean motion, but on the other hand, thermal atmospheric tides push the rotation away and may lead to asynchronous equilibria. Here, we investigate the complete tidal evolution of Earth-like planets by taking into account the effect of obliquity and eccentric orbits. We adopted an Andrade rheology for the gravitational tides and benchmarked the unknown parameters with the present rotation of Venus. We then applied our model to Earth-like planets, and we show that asynchronous rotation can be expected for planets orbiting stars with masses between 0.4 and 0.9 $M_\odot$ and semi-major axes between 0.2 and 0.7 au. Interestingly, we find that Earth-like planets in the habitable zone of stars with masses $\sim 0.8$ $M_\odot$ may end up with an equilibrium rotation of 24 hours. Precise automated delineation of post-operative gross tumor volume in glioblastoma cases is challenging and time-consuming owing to the presence of edema and the deformed brain tissue resulting from the surgical tumor resection. To develop a model for automated delineation of post-operative gross tumor volumes in glioblastoma, we proposed a novel 3D double pocket U-Net architecture that has two parallel pocket U-Nets. Both U-Nets were trained simultaneously with two different subsets of MRI sequences and the output from the models was combined to do the final prediction. We strategically combined the MRI input sequences (T1, T2, T1C, FL) for model training to achieve improved segmentation accuracy. The dataset comprised 82 post-operative studies collected from 23 glioblastoma patients who underwent maximal safe tumor resection. All had gross tumor volume (GTV) segmentations performed by human experts, and these were used as a reference standard. The results of 3D double pocket U-Net were compared with baseline 3D pocket U-Net models and the ensemble of 3D pocket U-Net models. All the models were evaluated with fivefold cross-validation in terms of the Dice similarity coefficient and Hausdorff distance. Our proposed double U-Net model trained with input sequences [T1, T1C, FL + T2, T1C] achieved a better mean Dice score of 0.8585 and Hausdorff distance of 4.1942 compared to all the baseline models and ensemble models trained. The presence of infiltrating tumors and vasogenic edema in the post-operative MRI scans tends to reduce segmentation accuracy when considering the MRI sequences T1, T2, T1C, and FL together for model training. The double U-Net approach of combining subsets of the MRI sequences as distinct inputs for model training improves segmentation accuracy by 7% when compared with the conventional method of model training with all four sequences.

This article establishes estimates on the dimension of the global attractor of the two-dimensional rotating Navier-Stokes equation for viscous, incompressible fluids on the $\beta$-plane. Previous results in this setting by M.A.H. Al-Jaboori and D. Wirosoetisno (2011) had proved that the global attractor collapses to a single point that depends only the longitudinal coordinate, i.e., zonal flow, when the rotation is sufficiently fast. However, an explicit quantification of the complexity of the global attractor in terms of $\beta$ had remained open. In this paper, such estimates are established which are valid across a wide regime of rotation rates and are consistent with the dynamically degenerate regime previously identified. Cardiac auscultation, an integral tool in diagnosing cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), often relies on the subjective interpretation of clinicians, presenting a limitation in consistency and accuracy. Addressing this, we introduce the BUET Multi-disease Heart Sound (BMD-HS) dataset - a comprehensive and meticulously curated collection of heart sound recordings. This dataset, encompassing 864 recordings across five distinct classes of common heart sounds, represents a broad spectrum of valvular heart diseases, with a focus on diagnostically challenging cases. The standout feature of the BMD-HS dataset is its innovative multi-label annotation system, which captures a diverse range of diseases and unique disease states. This system significantly enhances the dataset's utility for developing advanced machine learning models in automated heart sound classification and diagnosis. By bridging the gap between traditional auscultation practices and contemporary data-driven diagnostic methods, the BMD-HS dataset is poised to revolutionize CVD diagnosis and management, providing an invaluable resource for the advancement of cardiac health research. This article investigates the properties of order-divisor graphs associated with finite groups. An order-divisor graph of a finite group is an undirected graph in which the set of vertices includes all elements of the group, and two distinct vertices with different orders are adjacent if the order of one vertex divides the order of the other. We prove some beautiful results in order-divisor graphs of finite groups. The primary focus is on examining the girth, degree of vertices, and size of the order-divisor graph. This article studies the intimate relationship between two filtering algorithms for continuous data assimilation, the synchronization filter and the nudging filter, in the paradigmatic context of the two-dimensional (2D) Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) for incompressible fluids. In this setting, the nudging filter can formally be viewed as an affine perturbation of the 2D NSE. Thus, in the degenerate limit of zero nudging parameter, the nudging filter converges to the solution of the 2D NSE. However, when the nudging parameter of the nudging filter is large, the perturbation becomes singular. It is shown that in the singular limit of infinite nudging parameter, the nudging filter converges to the synchronization filter. In establishing this result, the article fills a notable gap in the literature surrounding these algorithms. Numerical experiments are then presented that confirm the theoretical results and probes the issue of selecting a nudging strategy in the presence of observational noise. In this direction, an adaptive nudging strategy is proposed that leverages the insight gained from the relationship between the synchronization filter and the nudging filter that produces measurable improvement over the constant nudging strategy., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

This article studies the interrelation between the determining modes property in the two-dimensional (2D) Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) of incompressible fluids and the synchronization property of two filtering algorithms for continuous data assimilation applied to the 2D NSE. These two properties are realized as manifestations of a more general phenomenon of "self-synchronous intertwinement". It is shown that this concept is a logically stronger form of asymptotic enslavement, as characterized by the existence of finitely many determining modes in the 2D NSE. In particular, this stronger form is shown to imply convergence of the synchronization filter and the nudging filter from continuous data assimilation (CDA), and then subsequently invoked to show that convergence in these filters implies that the 2D NSE possesses finitely many determining modes. The main achievement of this article is to therefore identify a new concept, that of self-synchronous intertwinement, through which a rigorous relationship between the determining modes property and synchronization in these CDA filters is established and made decisively clear. Reduced Order Models (ROMs) form essential tools across engineering domains by virtue of their function as surrogates for computationally intensive digital twinning simulators. Although purely data-driven methods are available for ROM construction, schemes that allow to retain a portion of the physics tend to enhance the interpretability and generalization of ROMs. However, physics-based techniques can adversely scale when dealing with nonlinear systems that feature parametric dependencies. This study introduces a generative physics-based ROM that is suited for nonlinear systems with parametric dependencies and is additionally able to quantify the confidence associated with the respective estimates. A main contribution of this work is the conditioning of these parametric ROMs to features that can be derived from monitoring measurements, feasibly in an online fashion. This is contrary to most existing ROM schemes, which remain restricted to the prescription of the physics-based, and usually a priori unknown, system parameters. Our work utilizes conditional Variational Autoencoders to continuously map the required reduction bases to a feature vector extracted from limited output measurements, while additionally allowing for a probabilistic assessment of the ROM-estimated Quantities of Interest. An auxiliary task using a neural network-based parametrization of suitable probability distributions is introduced to re-establish the link with physical model parameters. We verify the proposed scheme on a series of simulated case studies incorporating effects of geometric and material nonlinearity under parametric dependencies related to system properties and input load characteristics.

Multimodal generative models are rapidly evolving, leading to a surge in the generation of realistic video and audio that offers exciting possibilities but also serious risks. Deepfake videos, which can convincingly impersonate individuals, have particularly garnered attention due to their potential misuse in spreading misinformation and creating fraudulent content. This survey paper examines the dual landscape of deepfake video generation and detection, emphasizing the need for effective countermeasures against potential abuses. We provide a comprehensive overview of current deepfake generation techniques, including face swapping, reenactment, and audio-driven animation, which leverage cutting-edge technologies like GANs and diffusion models to produce highly realistic fake videos. Additionally, we analyze various detection approaches designed to differentiate authentic from altered videos, from detecting visual artifacts to deploying advanced algorithms that pinpoint inconsistencies across video and audio signals. The effectiveness of these detection methods heavily relies on the diversity and quality of datasets used for training and evaluation. We discuss the evolution of deepfake datasets, highlighting the importance of robust, diverse, and frequently updated collections to enhance the detection accuracy and generalizability. As deepfakes become increasingly indistinguishable from authentic content, developing advanced detection techniques that can keep pace with generation technologies is crucial. We advocate for a proactive approach in the "tug-of-war" between deepfake creators and detectors, emphasizing the need for continuous research collaboration, standardization of evaluation metrics, and the creation of comprehensive benchmarks.

DNA computing is an unconventional approach to computing that harnesses the parallelism and information storage capabilities of DNA molecules. It has emerged as a promising field with potential applications in solving a variety of computationally complex problems. This paper explores a DNA computing algorithm for Boolean matrix multiplication proposed by Nobuyuki et al. (2006) using a computer simulation, inspired by similar work done in the past by Obront (2021) for the DNA computing algorithm developed by Adleman (1994) for solving the Hamiltonian path problem. We develop a Python program to simulate the logical operations involved in the DNA-based Boolean matrix multiplication algorithm. The simulation replicates the key steps of the algorithm, including DNA sequence generation and hybridization, without imitating the physical behaviour of the DNA molecules. It is intended to serve as a basic prototype for larger, more comprehensive DNA computing simulators that can be used as educational or research tools in the future. Through this work, we aim to contribute to the understanding of DNA-based computing paradigms and their potential advantages and trade-offs compared to conventional computing systems, paving the way for future research and advancements in this emerging field.

The efficiency of classical Autoencoders (AEs) is limited in many practical situations. When the latent space is reduced through autoencoders, feature extraction becomes possible. However, overfitting is a common issue, leading to ``holes'' in AEs' interpolation capabilities. On the other hand, increasing the latent dimension results in a better approximation with fewer non-linearly coupled features (e.g., Koopman theory or kPCA), but it doesn't necessarily lead to dimensionality reduction, which makes feature extraction problematic. As a result, interpolating using Autoencoders gets harder. In this work, we introduce the Rank Reduction Autoencoder (RRAE), an autoencoder with an enlarged latent space, which is constrained to have a small pre-specified number of dominant singular values (i.e., low-rank). The latent space of RRAEs is large enough to enable accurate predictions while enabling feature extraction. As a result, the proposed autoencoder features a minimal rank linear latent space. To achieve what's proposed, two formulations are presented, a strong and a weak one, that build a reduced basis accurately representing the latent space. The first formulation consists of a truncated SVD in the latent space, while the second one adds a penalty term to the loss function. We show the efficiency of our formulations by using them for interpolation tasks and comparing the results to other autoencoders on both synthetic data and MNIST.

The goal of this article is to investigate the dynamics of semi-relativistic or non-relativistic charged particles in interaction with a scalar meson field. Our main contribution is the derivation of the classical dynamics of a particle-field system as an effective equation of the quantum microscopic Nelson model, in the classical limit where the value of the Planck constant approaches zero ($\hbar\to 0$). Thus, we prove the validity of Bohr's correspondence principle, that is to establish the transition from quantum to classical dynamics. We use a Wigner measure approach to study such transition. Then, as a consequence of this interplay between classical and quantum dynamics, we establish the global well-posedness of the classical particle-field interacting system, despite the low regularity of the related vector field, which prevents the use of a fixed point argument.

Affective computing for animals is a rapidly expanding research area that is going deeper than automated movement tracking to address animal internal states, like pain and emotions. Facial expressions can serve to communicate information about these states in mammals. However, unlike human-related studies, there is a significant shortage of datasets that would enable the automated analysis of animal facial expressions. Inspired by the recently introduced Cat Facial Landmarks in the Wild dataset, presenting cat faces annotated with 48 facial anatomy-based landmarks, in this paper, we develop an analogous dataset containing 3,274 annotated images of dogs. Our dataset is based on a scheme of 46 facial anatomy-based landmarks. The DogFLW dataset is available from the corresponding author upon a reasonable request.
