1. Existence and Uniqueness of Domain Walls for Notched Ferromagnetic Nanowires

Abstract: In this article, we investigate a simple model of notched ferromagnetic nanowires using tools from calculus of variations and critical point theory. Specifically, we focus on the case of a single unimodal notch and establish the existence and uniqueness of the critical point of the energy. This is achieved through a lifting argument, which reduces the problem to a generalized Sturm-Liouville equation. Uniqueness is demonstrated via a Mountain-Pass argument, where the assumption of two distinct critical points leads to a contradiction. Additionally, we show that the solution corresponds to a system of magnetic spins characterized by a single domain wall localized in the vicinity of the notch. We further analyze the asymptotic decay of the solution at infinity and explore the symmetric case using rearrangement techniques.

Abstract: The remarkable capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) make them increasingly compelling for adoption in real-world healthcare applications. However, the risks associated with using LLMs in medical applications have not been systematically characterized. We propose using five key principles for safe and trustworthy medical AI: Truthfulness, Resilience, Fairness, Robustness, and Privacy, along with ten specific aspects. Under this comprehensive framework, we introduce a novel MedGuard benchmark with 1,000 expert-verified questions. Our evaluation of 11 commonly used LLMs shows that the current language models, regardless of their safety alignment mechanisms, generally perform poorly on most of our benchmarks, particularly when compared to the high performance of human physicians. Despite recent reports indicate that advanced LLMs like ChatGPT can match or even exceed human performance in various medical tasks, this study underscores a significant safety gap, highlighting the crucial need for human oversight and the implementation of AI safety guardrails.

Abstract: Neutrinos at ultrahigh energies can originate both from interactions of cosmic rays at their acceleration sites and through cosmic-ray interactions as they propagate through the universe. These neutrinos are expected to have a low flux which drives the need for instruments with large effective areas. Radio observations of the inclined air showers induced by tau neutrino interactions in rock can achieve this, because radio waves can propagate essentially unattenuated through the hundreds of kilometers of atmosphere. Proposed arrays for radio detection of tau neutrinos focus on either arrays of inexpensive receivers distributed over a large area, the GRAND concept, or compact phased arrays on elevated mountains, the BEACON concept, to build up a large detector area with a low trigger threshold. We present a concept that combines the advantages of these two approaches with a trigger driven by phased arrays at a moderate altitude (1 km) and sparse, high-gain outrigger receivers for reconstruction and background rejection. Abstract: Large-scale cosmic-ray detectors like the Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) are pushing the boundaries of our ability to identify air shower events. Existing trigger schemes rely solely on the timing of signals detected by individual antennas, which brings many challenges in distinguishing true air shower signals from background. This work explores novel event-level radio trigger methods specifically designed for GRAND, but also applicable to other systems, such as the Radio Detector (RD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory. In addition to an upgraded plane wave front reconstruction technique, we introduce orthogonal and complementary approaches that analyze the radio-emission footprint, the spatial distribution of signal strength across triggered antennas, to refine event selection. We test our methods on mock data sets constructed with simulated showers and real background noise measured with the GRAND prototype, to assess the performance potential in terms of sensitivity and background rejection in GRAND. 6. Analytical planar wavefront reconstruction and error estimates for radio detection of extensive air showers

Abstract: When performing radio detection of ultra-high energy astroparticles, the planar wavefront model is often used as a first step to evaluate the arrival direction of primary particles, by adjusting the wavefront orientation based on the peak of signal traces of individual antennas. The benefits of this approach are however limited by the lack of a good evaluation of its robustness. In order to mitigate this limitation, we derive in this work an analytical solution for the arrival direction as well as the corresponding analytical reconstruction uncertainty. Abstract: The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) aims to detect highly inclined extensive air showers (EAS) with down-going and up-going trajectories. Several working groups in the GRAND collaboration are developing methods to reconstruct the incoming direction, core position, primary energy, and composition of the showers. The reconstruction pipeline -- currently under development in the France/IAP working group -- relies on a model of spherical wavefront emission for arrival times, which is possible because the radio signals are generated far away from the antenna stations. The amplitude distribution of the signals at the antenna level is described by an Angular Distribution Function that considers various asymmetries in the data, including geomagnetic effects. 8. Spectral properties of ablating meteorite samples for improved meteoroid composition diagnostics

Abstract: Emission spectra and diagnostic spectral features of a diverse range of ablated meteorite samples with a known composition are presented. We aim to provide a reference spectral dataset to improve our abilities to classify meteoroid composition types from meteor spectra observations. The data were obtained by ablating meteorite samples in high-enthalpy plasma wind tunnel facilities recreating conditions characteristic of low-speed meteors. Near-UV to visible-range (320 - 800 nm) emission spectra of 22 diverse meteorites captured by a high-resolution Echelle spectrometer were analyzed to identify the characteristic spectral features of individual meteorite groups. The same dataset captured by a lower-resolution meteor spectrograph was applied to compare the meteorite data with meteor spectra observations. Spectral modeling revealed that the emitting meteorite plasma was characterized by temperatures of 3700 - 4800 K, similar to the main temperature component of meteors. The studied line intensity variations were found to trace the differences in the original meteorite composition and thus can be used to constrain the individual meteorite classes. We demonstrate that meteorite composition types, including ordinary chondrites, carbonaceous chondrites, various achondrites, stony-iron and iron meteorites, can be spectrally distinguished by measuring relative line intensities of Mg I, Fe I, Na I, Cr I, Mn I, Si I, H I, CN, Ni I, and Li I. Additionally, we confirm the effect of the incomplete evaporation of refractory elements Al, Ti, and Ca, and the presence of minor species Co I, Cu I, and V I.

Abstract: The operation of upcoming ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray, gamma-ray, and neutrino radio-detection experiments, like the Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND), poses significant computational challenges involving the production of numerous simulations of particle showers and their detection, and a high data throughput. GRANDlib is an open-source software tool designed to meet these challenges. Its primary goal is to perform end-to-end simulations of the detector operation, from the interaction of ultra-high-energy particles, through -- by interfacing with external air-shower simulations -- the ensuing particle shower development and its radio emission, to its detection by antenna arrays and its processing by data-acquisition systems. Additionally, GRANDlib manages the visualization, storage, and retrieval of experimental and simulated data. 10. Interior convection regime, host star luminosity, and predicted atmospheric CO2 abundance in terrestrial exoplanets

Abstract: Terrestrial planets in the Habitable Zone of Sun-like stars are priority targets for detection and observation by the next generation of space telescopes. Earth's long-term habitability may have been tied to the geological carbon cycle, a process critically facilitated by plate tectonics. In the modern Earth, plate motion corresponds to a mantle convection regime called mobile-lid. The alternate, stagnant-lid regime is found on Mars and Venus, which may have lacked strong enough weathering feedbacks to sustain surface liquid water over geological timescales if initially present. Constraining observational strategies able to infer the most common regime in terrestrial exoplanets requires quantitative predictions of the atmospheric composition of planets in either regime. We use endmember models of volcanic outgassing and crust weathering for the stagnant- and mobile-lid convection regimes, that we couple to models of atmospheric chemistry and climate, and ocean chemistry to simulate the atmospheric evolution of these worlds in the Habitable Zone. In our simulations under the two alternate regimes, we find that the fraction of planets possessing climates consistent with surface liquid water is virtually the same. Despite this unexpected similarity, we predict that a mission capable of detecting atmospheric CO2 abundance above 0.1 bar in 25 terrestrial exoplanets is extremely likely (>95% of samples) to infer the dominant interior convection regime in that sample with strong evidence (10:1 odds). 11. On the stationary solution of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation on a nanowire with constant external magnetic field

Abstract: We consider an infinite ferromagnetic nanowire, with an energy functional $E$ with easy-axis in the direction $e_1$ and a constant external magnetic field $E_{ext} = h_0 e_1$ along the same direction. The evolution of its magnetization is governed by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (LLG) associated to $E$. Under some assumptions on $h_0$, we prove the existence of stationary solutions with the same limits at infinity, their uniqueness up to the invariances of the equation and the instability of their orbits with respect to the flow. This property gives interesting new insights of the behavior of the solutions of (LLG), which are completed by some numerical simulations and discussed afterwards, in particular regarding the stability of 2-domain wall structures proven in [4] and more generally the interactions between domain walls.

12. The Fireball of November 24, 1970, as the Most Probable Source of the Ischgl Meteorite

Abstract: In June 1976, a pristine meteorite stone weighing approximately 1 kg, fully covered with a fresh black fusion crust, was collected on a mountain road in the high-altitude Alpine environment. The recovery took place while clearing the remnants of a snow avalanche, 2 km northwest of Ischgl in Austria. Subsequent to its retrieval, the specimen remained in the finder's private residence without undergoing any scientific examination or identification until 2008, when it was brought to the University of Innsbruck. The sample was classified as a well-preserved LL6 chondrite, with a W0 weathering grade, implying a relatively short time between the meteorite fall and its retrieval. To investigate the potential connection between the Ischgl meteorite and a recorded fireball event, we have reviewed all documented fireballs ever photographed by German fireball camera stations. This examination led us to identify the fireball EN241170 observed in Germany by ten different European Network stations on the night of November 23/24, 1970, as the most likely candidate. We employed state-of-the-art techniques to reconstruct the fireball's trajectory, and to reproduce both its luminous and dark flight phases in detail. We find that the determined strewn field and the generated heat map closely align with the recovery location of the Ischgl meteorite. Furthermore, the measured radionuclide data reported here indicate that the pre-atmospheric size of the Ischgl meteoroid is consistent with the mass estimate inferred from our deceleration analysis along the trajectory. Our findings strongly support the conclusion that the Ischgl meteorite originated from the EN241170 fireball, effectively establishing it as a confirmed meteorite fall. This discovery enables to determine, along with the physical properties, also the heliocentric orbit and cosmic history of the Ischgl meteorite., Comment: Accepted for publication in Meteoritics & Planetary Science

Abstract: The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) is an envisioned observatory of ultra-high-energy particles of cosmic origin, with energies in excess of 100 PeV. GRAND uses large surface arrays of autonomous radio-detection units to look for the radio emission from extensive air showers that are triggered by the interaction of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, gamma rays, and neutrinos in the atmosphere or underground. In particular, for ultra-high-energy neutrinos, the future final phase of GRAND aims to be sensitive enough to discover them in spite of their plausibly tiny flux. Presently, three prototype GRAND radio arrays are in operation: GRANDProto300, in China, GRAND@Auger, in Argentina, and GRAND@Nancay, in France. Their goals are to field-test the design of the radio-detection units, understand the radio background to which they are exposed, and develop tools for diagnostic, data gathering, and data analysis. 14. Analysis of CN emission as a marker of organic compounds in meteoroids using laboratory simulated meteors

Abstract: Fragments of small solar system bodies entering Earth's atmosphere have possibly been important contributors of organic compounds to the early Earth. The cyano radical (CN) emission from meteors is considered as potentially one of the most suitable markers of organic compounds in meteoroids, however, its detection in meteor spectra has been thus far unsuccessful. With the aim to improve our abilities to identify CN emission in meteor observations and use its spectral features to characterize the composition of incoming asteroidal meteoroids, we present a detailed analysis of CN emission from high-resolution spectra of 22 laboratory simulated meteors including ordinary, carbonaceous, and enstatite chondrites, as well as a large diversity of achondrites (i.e., ureilite, aubrite, lunar, martian, howardite, eucrite, and diogenite), mesosiderite, and iron meteorites. We describe the variations of CN emission from different classes of asteroidal meteor analogues, its correlation and time evolution relative to other major meteoroid components. We demonstrate that CN can be used as a diagnostic spectral feature of carbonaceous and carbon-rich meteoroids, while most ordinary chondrites show no signs of CN. Our results point out strong correlation between CN and H emission and suggest both volatile features are suitable to trace contents of organic matter and water molecules present within meteoroids. For the application in lower resolution meteor observations, we demonstrate that CN can be best recognized in the early stages of ablation and for carbon-rich materials by measuring relative intensity ratio of CN band peak to the nearby Fe I-4 lines.

Abstract: With thousands of exoplanets now identified, the characterization of habitable planets and the potential identification of inhabited ones is a major challenge for the coming decades. We review the current working definition of habitable planets, the upcoming observational prospects for their characterization and present an innovative approach to assess habitability and inhabitation. This integrated method couples for the first time the atmosphere and the interior modeling with the biological activity based on ecosystem modeling. We review here the first applications of the method to asses the likelihood and impact of methanogenesis for Enceladus, primitive Earth, and primitive Mars. Informed by these applications for solar system situations where habitability and inhabitation is questionned, we show how the method can be used to inform the design of future space observatories by considering habitability and inhabitation of Earth-like exoplanets around sun-like stars., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: Preservation of the chemical and structural integrity of samples that will be brought back from Mars is paramount to achieving the scientific objectives of MSR. Given our knowledge of the nature of the samples retrieved at Jezero by Perseverance, at least two options need to be tested for opening the sample tubes: (1) One or two radial cuts at the end of the tube to slide the sample out. (2) Two radial cuts at the ends of the tube and two longitudinal cuts to lift the upper half of the tube and access the sample. Strategy 1 will likely minimize contamination but incurs the risk of affecting the physical integrity of weakly consolidated samples. Strategy 2 will be optimal for preserving the physical integrity of the samples but increases the risk of contamination and mishandling of the sample as more manipulations and additional equipment will be needed. A flexible approach to opening the sample tubes is therefore required, and several options need to be available, depending on the nature of the rock samples returned. Both opening strategies 1 and 2 may need to be available when the samples are returned to handle different sample types (e.g., loosely bound sediments vs. indurated magmatic rocks). This question should be revisited after engineering tests are performed on analogue samples. 18. Minimal time of magnetization switching in small ferromagnetic ellipsoidal samples

Abstract: In this paper, we consider a ferromagnetic material of ellipsoidal shape. The associated magnetic moment then has two asymptotically stable opposite equilibria, of the form $\pm\overline{m}$. In order to use these materials for memory storage purposes, it is necessary to know how to control the magnetic moment. We use as a control variable a spatially uniform external magnetic field and consider the question of flipping the magnetic moment, i.e., changing it from the $+\overline{m}$ configuration to the $-\overline{m}$ one, in minimal time. Of course, it is necessary to impose restrictions on the external magnetic field used. We therefore include a constraint on the $L^\infty$ norm of the controls, assumed to be less than a threshold value $U$. We show that, generically with respect to the dimensions of the ellipsoid, there is a minimal value of $U$ for this problem to have a solution. We then characterize it precisely. Finally, we investigate some particular configurations associated to geometries enjoying symmetries properties and show that in this case the magnetic moment can be controlled in minimal time without imposing a threshold condition on $U$.

Abstract: We consider a ferromagnetic nanowire, with an energy functional $E$ with easy-axis in the direction $e_1$, and which takes into account the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We consider configurations of the magnetization which are perturbations of two well separated domain wall, and study their evolution under the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert flow associated to E. Our main result is that, if the two walls have opposite speed, these configurations are asymptotically stable, up to gauges intrinsic to the invariances of the energy $E$. Our analysis builds on the framework developed in [4], taking advantage that it is amenable to space localisation.

21. Early Mars' habitability and global cooling by H2-based methanogens

Abstract: During the Noachian, Mars' crust may have provided a favorable environment for microbial life. The porous brine-saturated regolith would have created a physical space sheltered from UV and cosmic radiations and provided a solvent, while the below-ground temperature and diffusion of a dense reduced atmosphere may have supported simple microbial organisms that consume H2 and CO2 as energy and carbon sources and produce methane as a waste. On Earth, hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis was among the earliest metabolisms but its viability on early Mars has never been quantitatively evaluated. Here we present a probabilistic assessment of Mars' Noachian habitability to H2-based methanogens, and quantify their biological feedback on Mars' atmosphere and climate. We find that subsurface habitability was very likely, and limited mainly by the extent of surface ice coverage. Biomass productivity could have been as high as in early Earth's ocean. However, the predicted atmospheric composition shift caused by methanogenesis would have triggered a global cooling event, ending potential early warm conditions, compromising surface habitability and forcing the biosphere deep into the Martian crust. Spatial projections of our predictions point to lowland sites at low-to-medium latitudes as good candidates to uncover traces of this early life at or near the surface.

24. Impact of Implant Design and Coronal Deformity on Revision and Reoperation Rates in Total Ankle Arthroplasty: A Comparative Study

Abstract: Category: Ankle Arthritis; Ankle Introduction/Purpose: Literature trends indicate a generally lower rate of reoperation and revision associated with the fixed-bearing two-component design implant compared to the mobile-bearing three-component design for total ankle arthroplasty (TAA). Coronal deformity is also linked to poorer outcomes following TAA. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of intra-articular coronal deformity (non-concentric ankle arthritis) on both fixed and mobile implant designs. We hypothesized that non-concentric ankle arthritis and mobile bearings would be associated with a higher early revision rate. Methods: This IRB approved retrospectivelreviewed 202 patients who underwent TAA with either mobile-bearing or fixed-bearing implants between 2007 and 2018. Patients who underwent TAA from 2007 to 2013 received the mobile-bearing implant, while those who underwent TAA after November 2012 received the fixed-bearing implant. Age, gender, ASA score, smoking status, BMI and eciology of the arthritis were reported from patients' record. Preoperative weight bearing x-ray were assessed for COFAS classification and intra-articular deformity. Non-concentric ankles were defined by a talar tilt angle greater than 4 degrees. The primary outcome was the rate of revision and reoperation within three years following the index procedure. Revision was defined as implants removal or exchange. Reoperation was defined as any additional surgery post-index surgery. The data underwent normality testing with the Shapiro-Wilk test, and comparisons were made via Kruskal-Wallis test and Chi square test. A p-value threshold of 0.05 or below was deemed significant. Results: All groups were not statistically different for age, gender, ASA score, BMI, and smoking status. Of the 76 patients who received a mobile-bearing implant, 33 had non-concentric arthritis, and 43 had concentric arthritis. Of the 126 patients who received a fixed-bearing implant, 61 had non-concentric arthritis, and 65 had concentric arthritis. In the mobile-bearing group, 8 patients underwent revision and 9 underwent reoperation. In the fixed-bearing group, 4 patients underwent revision and 10 underwent reoperation. In the non-concentric group revision rate was significantly higher (p< 0.05) for the mobile-bearing implant (15.2%) compared to the fixed-bearing implant (0%) . In the concentric group, no significant difference in revision rates between the fixed-bearing (6.2%) and mobile-bearing designs (7%) was observed. Reoperation rates were similar across all groups. Conclusion: The study suggested that the use of mobile-bearing implants in patients with non-concentric arthritis is associated with a significantly higher revision rate compared to fixed-bearing implants. In patients with concentric arthritis, there was no significant difference in revision rates between the two implant designs. Additionally, the study found no significant difference in the reoperation rates across all groups. Preoperative intra-articular deformity seems to be a predictor of early revision rate after total ankle arthroplasty.

27. FilDReaMS 2. Application to the analysis of the relative orientations between filaments and the magnetic field in four Herschel fields

Abstract: Both simulations and observations of the interstellar medium show that the study of the relative orientations between filamentary structures and the magnetic field can bring new insight into the role played by magnetic fields in the formation and evolution of filaments and in the process of star formation. We provide a first application of FilDReaMS, the new method to detect and analyze filaments. Our goal is to investigate the relative orientations between the detected filaments and the magnetic field. We apply FilDReaMS to a sample of four Herschel fields (G210, G300, G82, G202) characterized by different Galactic environments and evolutionary stages. First, we examine the networks formed by filaments of different bar widths as well as their hierarchical organization. Second, we compare the filament orientations to the magnetic field orientation inferred from Planck polarization data and, for the first time, we study the statistics of the relative orientation angle as functions of both spatial scale and ${\rm H_2}$ column density. We find preferential relative orientations in the four Herschel fields: small filaments with low column densities are slightly more parallel than perpendicular to the magnetic field, while large filaments (higher column densities) are oriented nearly perpendicular (or, in the case of G202, nearly parallel). In the two nearby fields (G210 and G300), we observe a transition from mostly parallel to mostly perpendicular at an $N_{\rm H_2} \simeq 1.1$ and $1.4\times10^{21}\,$cm$^{-2}$, respectively, consistent with the results of previous studies. Our results confirm the existence of a coupling between magnetic fields at cloud scales and filaments at smaller scale. 28. FilDReaMS 1. Presentation of a new method for Filament Detection and Reconstruction at Multiple Scales

Abstract: Context. Filamentary structures appear to be ubiquitous in the interstellar medium. Being able to detect and characterize them is the first step toward understanding their origin, their evolution, and their role in the Galactic cycle of matter. Aims. We present a new method, called FilDReaMS, to detect and analyze filaments in a given image. This method is meant to be fast, user-friendly, multi-scale, and suited for statistical studies. Methods. The input image is scanned with a rectangular model bar, which makes it possible to uncover structures that can be locally approximated by this bar and to derive their orientations. The bar width can be varied over a broad range of values to probe filaments of different widths. Results. We performed several series of tests to validate the method and to assess its sensitivity to the level of noise, the filament aspect ratios, and the dynamic range of filament intensities. We found that the method exhibits very good performance at recovering the orientation of the filamentary structures, with an accuracy of 0.5{\deg} in nominal conditions, up to 3{\deg} in the worst case scenario with high level of noise. The filaments width is recovered with uncertainties better than 0.5 px (pixels) in most of the cases, which could extend up to 3 px in case of low signal-to-noise ratios. Some attempt to build a correspondence between Plummer-type filament profiles and outcomes of the method is proposed, but remains sensitive to the local environment. Conclusions. Our method is found to be robust and adapted to the identification and the reconstruction of filamentary structures in various environments, from diffuse to dense medium. Abstract: The Polarized Instrument for Long-wavelength Observation of the Tenuous interstellar medium (PILOT) is a balloon-borne experiment that aims to measure the polarized emission of thermal dust at a wavelength of 240 um (1.2 THz). The PILOT experiment flew from Timmins, Ontario, Canada in 2015 and 2019 and from Alice Springs, Australia in April 2017. The in-flight performance of the instrument during the second flight was described in Mangilli et al. 2019. In this paper, we present data processing steps that were not presented in Mangilli et al. 2019 and that we have recently implemented to correct for several remaining instrumental effects. The additional data processing concerns corrections related to detector cross-talk and readout circuit memory effects, and leakage from total intensity to polarization. We illustrate the above effects and the performance of our corrections using data obtained during the third flight of PILOT, but the methods used to assess the impact of these effects on the final science-ready data, and our strategies for correcting them will be applied to all PILOT data. We show that the above corrections, and in particular that for the intensity to polarization leakage, which is most critical for accurate polarization measurements with PILOT, are accurate to better than 0.4 % as measured on Jupiter during flight#3.

30. Hydrogen emission from meteors and meteorites: mapping traces of H$_{2}$O molecules and organic compounds in small Solar system bodies

Abstract: The hydrogen emission from meteors is assumed to originate mainly from the meteoroid composition, making it a potential tracer of H$_{2}$O molecules and organic compounds. H$\alpha$ line was previously detected in individual fireballs, but its variation in a larger meteor dataset and dependency on the dynamical origin and physical properties have not yet been studied. Here we investigate the relative intensity of H$\alpha$ within 304 meteor spectra observed by the AMOS network. We demonstrate that H$\alpha$ emission is favored in faster meteors ($v_i >>$ 30 km s$^{-1}$) which form the high-temperature spectral component. H$\alpha$ was found to be a characteristic spectral feature of cometary meteoroids with $\sim$ 92% of all meteoroids with detected H$\alpha$ originating from Halley-type and long-period orbits. Our results suggest that hydrogen is being depleted from meteoroids with lower perihelion distances (q $<$ 0.4 au). No asteroidal meteoroids with detected H emission were found. However, using spectral data from simulated ablation of different meteorite types, we show that H emission from asteroidal materials can occur, and apparently correlates with their water and organic matter content. Strongest H emission was detected from carbonaceous chondrites (CM and CV) and achondrites (ureilite and aubrite), while it was lacking in most ordinary chondrites. The detection of H$\alpha$ in asteroidal meteoroids could be used to identify meteoroids of carbonaceous or achondritic composition. Overall, our results suggest that H$\alpha$ emission correlates with the emission of other volatiles (Na and CN) and presents a suitable tracer of water and organic matter in meteoroids.

31. Unbounded-energy solutions to the fluid+disk system and long-time behavior for large initial data

Abstract: In this paper, we analyse the long-time behavior of solutions to a coupled system describing the motion of a rigid disk in a 2D viscous incompressible fluid. Following previous approaches, we look at the problem in the system of coordinates associated with the center of mass of the disk. Doing so, we introduce a further nonlinearity to the classical Navier Stokes equations. In comparison with the classical nonlinearities, this new term lacks time and space integrability, thus complicating strongly the analysis of the long-time behavior of solutions. We provide herein two refined tools : a refined analysis of the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities and a thorough description of fractional powers of the so-called fluid-structure operator. On the basis of these two tools we extend previous decay estimates to arbitrary initial data and show local stability of the Lamb-Oseen vortex.

Abstract: The phenomenon of Faraday rotation of linearly polarized synchrotron emission in a magneto-ionized medium has been understood and studied for decades. But since the sense of the rotation itself is irrelevant in most contexts, some uncertainty and inconsistencies have arisen in the literature about this detail. Here, we start from basic plasma theory to describe the propagation of polarized emission from a background radio source through a magnetized, ionized medium in order to rederive the correct sense of Faraday rotation. We present simple graphics to illustrate the decomposition of a linearly polarized wave into right and left circularly polarized modes, the temporal and spatial propagation of the phases of those modes, and the resulting physical rotation of the polarization orientation. We then re-examine the case of a medium that both Faraday-rotates and emits polarized radiation and show how a helical magnetic field can construct or destruct the Faraday rotation. Abstract: We analyze dynamical properties of the logarithmic Schr{\"o}dinger equation under a quadratic potential. The sign of the nonlinearity is such that it is known that in the absence of external potential, every solution is dispersive, with a universal asymptotic profile. The introduction of a harmonic potential generates solitary waves, corresponding to generalized Gaussons. We prove that they are orbitally stable, using an inequality related to relative entropy, which may be thought of as dual to the classical logarithmic Sobolev inequality. In the case of a partial confinement, we show a universal dispersive behavior for suitable marginals. Abstract: An analytical model for three-dimensional incompressible turbulence was recently introduced in the hydrodynamics community which, with only a few parameters, shares many properties of experimental and numerical turbulence, notably intermittency (non-Gaussianity), the energy cascade (skewness), and vorticity alignment properties. In view of modeling astrophysical environments, we introduce a manner to extend to compressible fluids the three-dimensional turbulent velocity field model of Chevillard et al. (2010), as well as the three 3D turbulent magnetic field models of Durrive et al. (2020), following the same procedure based on the concept of multiplicative chaos. Our model provides a complementary tool to numerical simulations, as it enables us to generate very quickly fairly realistic velocity fields and magnetic fields, the statistics of which are controllable with intuitive parameters. Therefore our model will also provide a useful tool for observers in astrophysics. Finally, maybe even more than the model itself, it is the very procedure that matters the most: our model is modular, in the sense that it is constructed gradually, with intuitive and physically motivated steps, so that it is prone to many further improvements., Comment: 15 pages, submitted to MNRAS

Abstract: In the 60s, the Hellenic belt was taken as the “Geosyncline model”. Here we take a modern look at this Hellenic/Aegean region which as a concentrate encompasses all the main geodynamic processes known in orogens. This region documents the fundamental characteristics of the geodynamic processes related to mountain building, namely continental rifting, oceanic spreading, oceanic then continental subduction, collision i.e., closure of oceanic basins. In particular, the Mesozoic obduction events in northern Hellenides, and the effects of a still ongoing major extension linked to the active subduction under the Aegean domain.

Abstract: We are interested in a WKB analysis of the Logarithmic Non-Linear Schr\"odinger Equation with "Riemann-like" variables in an analytic framework in semiclassical regime. We show that the Cauchy problem is locally well posed uniformly in the semiclassical constant and that the semiclassical limit can be performed. In particular, our framework is not only compatible with the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with logarithmic nonlinearity, but also allows initial data (and solutions) which can converge to $0$ at infinity.

Abstract: In meteor physics the luminous efficiency ${\tau}$ is used to convert the meteor's magnitude to the corresponding meteoroid's mass. However, lack of sufficiently accurate verification methods or adequate laboratory tests leave this parameter to be controversially discussed. In this work meteor/fireball data obtained by the Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON) was used to calculate the masses of the pre-atmospheric meteoroids which could in turn be compared to the meteor brightnesses to assess their luminous efficiencies. For that, deceleration-based formulas for the mass computation were used. We have found ${\tau}$-values, as well as the shape change coefficients, of 294 fireballs with determined masses in the range of $10^{-6}$ kg - $100$ kg. The derived ${\tau}$-values have a median of ${\tau}_{median}$ = 2.17 %. Most of them are on the order of 0.1 % - 10 %. We present how our values were obtained, compare them with data reported in the literature, and discuss several methods. A dependence of ${\tau}$ on the pre-atmospheric velocity of the meteor, $v_e$, is noticeable with a relation of ${\tau}=0.0023 \cdot v_e^{2.3}$. The higher luminous efficiency of fast meteors could be explained by the higher energy released. Fast meteoroids produce additional emission lines that radiate more efficiently in specific wavelengths due to the appearance of the so-called second component of higher temperature. Furthermore, a dependence of ${\tau}$ on the initial meteoroid mass, $M_e$, was found, with negative linear behaviour in log-log space: ${\tau}=0.48 \cdot M_e^{-0.47}$. This implies that the radiation of smaller meteoroids is more efficient.

43. Helicity in the Large-Scale Galactic Magnetic Field

Abstract: We search for observational signatures of magnetic helicity in data from all-sky radio polarization surveys of the Milky Way Galaxy. Such a detection would help confirm the dynamo origin of the field and may provide new observational constraints for its shape. We compare our observational results to simulated observations for both a simple helical field, and for a more complex field that comes from a solution to the dynamo equation. Our simulated observations show that the large-scale helicity of a magnetic field is reflected in the large-scale structure of the fractional polarization derived from the observed synchrotron radiation and Faraday depth of the diffuse Galactic synchrotron emission. Comparing the models with the observations provides evidence for the presence of a quadrupolar magnetic field with a vertical component that is pointing away from the observer in both hemispheres of the Milky Way Galaxy. Since there is no reason to believe that the Galactic magnetic field is unusual when compared to other galaxies, this result provides further support for the dynamo origin of large-scale magnetic fields in galaxies., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, Accepted to MNRAS 28 September 2020

44. Microtextures in the Chelyabinsk impact breccia reveal the history of Phosphorus-Olivine-Assemblages in chondrites

Abstract: The geochemistry and textural associations of chondritic phosphate minerals can provide insights into the geological histories of parental asteroids, but the processes governing their formation and deformation remain poorly constrained. Here, we present a quantitative assessment of phosphorus-bearing mineral textures in the three variously-shocked lithologies (light, dark, and melt) of the Chelyabinsk (LL5) ordinary chondrite using scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, cathodoluminescence, and electron backscatter diffraction techniques. Phase associations, microtextures, and microstructures of phosphates are extremely variable within and between the differently-shocked lithologies investigated in the Chelyabinsk meteorite. We observe continuously strained as well as recrystallized, strain-free phosphate populations. Recrystallized grains (with strain-free subdomains) are present only in the more intensely shocked dark lithology, indicating that phosphate growth in Chelyabinsk predates the development of primary shock-metamorphic textures. This disruption event is also recorded by complete melting of portions of the meteorite to produce the shock-melt lithology, which contains a population of phosphorus-rich olivine grains. We interpret the textures and phase associations of Chelyabinsk to have resulted from initial phosphate growth via metasomatic olivine replacement, followed by major deformation during an early shock-melting impact and a subsequent minor shock event. This minor event appears to have generated a sub-population of phosphates that display patchy CL textures, in both the light and dark lithology. Finally, we propose a new classification scheme to describe various types of Phosphorus-Olivine-Assemblages (Type I-III POAs), which can be used to classify shock metamorphic events and define the associated physicochemical processes., Comment: Accepted in Meteoritics and Planetary Science

Abstract: The history of the Earth has been marked by major ecological transitions, driven by metabolic innovation, that radically reshaped the composition of the oceans and atmosphere. The nature and magnitude of the earliest transitions, hundreds of million years before photosynthesis evolved, remain poorly understood. Using a novel ecosystem-planetary model, we find that pre-photosynthetic methane-cycling microbial ecosystems are much less productive than previously thought. In spite of their low productivity, the evolution of methanogenic metabolisms strongly modifies the atmospheric composition, leading to a warmer but less resilient climate. As the abiotic carbon cycle responds, further metabolic evolution (anaerobic methanotrophy) may feed back to the atmosphere and destabilize the climate, triggering a transient global glaciation. Abstract: An analytical model for fully developed three-dimensional incompressible turbulence was recently proposed in the hydrodynamics community, based on the concept of multiplicative chaos. It consists of a random field represented by means of a stochastic integral, which, with only a few parameters, shares many properties with experimental and numerical turbulence, including in particular energy transfer through scales (the cascade) and intermittency (non-Gaussianity) which is most conveniently controlled with a single parameter. Here, we propose three models extending this approach to MHD turbulence. Our formulae provide physically motivated 3D models of a turbulent velocity field and magnetic field coupled together.
