1. Leveraging Education to End Child Labour: Lessons from India and Bangladesh

Abstract: Global progress in child labour reduction has stalled since 2016. In South Asia, the negative consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, recurrent extreme weather events and the cost-of-living crisis further threaten to slow or even reverse the progress made. This synthesis report addresses a timely need for new research to help decision-makers and practitioners identify policy and programmatic actions that can support prevention and reduction of child labour in South Asia, with a focus on the role of education. Drawing on quantitative data and qualitative primary evidence from UNICEF Innocenti's research in Bangladesh and India, it offers an accessible and rigorous overview of recent trends and patterns in child labour and explores how these relate to children's schooling experiences in both countries. Implications of COVID-19 for education and labour, and the role of child marriage as a key related outcome, are also assessed. The report also explores children's perspectives of their labour and schooling experiences, including in migration contexts as well as during the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting school closures. The report concludes with programmatic and research recommendations for further action at regional, country, and global levels.

Abstract: Recently, a class of long-period radio transients (LPTs) has been discovered, exhibiting emission on timescales thousands of times longer than radio pulsars. Several models had been proposed implicating either a strong magnetic field neutron star, isolated white dwarf pulsar, or a white dwarf binary system with a low-mass companion. While several models for LPTs also predict X-ray emission, no LPTs have been detected in X-rays despite extensive searches. Here we report the discovery of an extremely bright LPT (10-20 Jy in radio), ASKAP J1832-0911, which has coincident radio and X-ray emission, both with a 44.2-minute period. The X-ray and radio luminosities are correlated and vary by several orders of magnitude. These properties are unique amongst known Galactic objects and require a new explanation. We consider a $\gtrsim0.5$ Myr old magnetar with a $\gtrsim 10^{13}$ G crustal field, or an extremely magnetised white dwarf in a binary system with a dwarf companion, to be plausible explanations for ASKAP J1832-0911, although both explanations pose significant challenges to formation and emission theories. Abstract: Evidence has emerged for a stochastic signal correlated among 67 pulsars within the 15-year pulsar-timing data set compiled by the NANOGrav collaboration. Similar signals have been found in data from the European, Indian, Parkes, and Chinese PTAs. This signal has been interpreted as indicative of the presence of a nanohertz stochastic gravitational wave background. To explore the internal consistency of this result we investigate how the recovered signal strength changes as we remove the pulsars one by one from the data set. We calculate the signal strength using the (noise-marginalized) optimal statistic, a frequentist metric designed to measure correlated excess power in the residuals of the arrival times of the radio pulses. We identify several features emerging from this analysis that were initially unexpected. The significance of these features, however, can only be assessed by comparing the real data to synthetic data sets. After conducting identical analyses on simulated data sets, we do not find anything inconsistent with the presence of a stochastic gravitational wave background in the NANOGrav 15-year data. The methodologies developed here can offer additional tools for application to future, more sensitive data sets. While this analysis provides an internal consistency check of the NANOGrav results, it does not eliminate the necessity for additional investigations that could identify potential systematics or uncover unmodeled physical phenomena in the data., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables

4. The Fast and the Furious: Tracking the Effect of the Tomoa Skip on Speed Climbing

Abstract: Sport climbing is an athletic discipline comprised of three sub-disciplines -- lead climbing, bouldering, and speed climbing. These three sub-disciplines have distinct goals, resulting in specialization of athletes into one of the three events. The year 2020 marked the first inclusion of sport climbing in the Olympic Games. While this decision was met with excitement from the climbing community, it was not without controversy. The International Olympic Committee had allocated one set of medals for the entire sport, necessitating the combination of sub-disciplines into one competition. As a result, athletes who specialized in lead and bouldering were forced to train and compete in speed for the first time in their careers. One such athlete was Tomoa Narasaki, a World Champion boulderer, who introduced a new method of approaching the speed event. This approach, deemed the Tomoa Skip (TS), was subsequently adopted by many of the top speed climbers. Concurrently, speed records fell rapidly (from 5.48s in 2017 to 4.90s in 2023). Speed climbing involves ascending a 15m wall containing the same pattern of obstacles. Thus, records can be compared across time. In this paper we investigate the effect of the TS on speed climbing by answering two questions: (1) Did the TS result in a decrease in speed times? and (2) Do climbers who utilize the TS show less consistency? The success of the TS highlights the potential of collaboration between different disciplines of sport, showing athletes of diverse backgrounds may contribute to the evolution of competition., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. Abstract: Pulsar timing array observations have found evidence for an isotropic gravitational wave background with the Hellings-Downs angular correlations, expected from general relativity. This interpretation hinges on the measured shape of the angular correlations, which is predominately quadrupolar under general relativity. Here we explore a more flexible parameterization: we expand the angular correlations into a sum of Legendre polynomials and use a Bayesian analysis to constrain their coefficients with the 15-year pulsar timing data set collected by the North American Nanohertz Observatory for Gravitational Waves (NANOGrav). When including Legendre polynomials with multipoles $\ell \geq 2$, we only find a significant signal in the quadrupole with an amplitude consistent with general relativity and non-zero at the $\sim 95\%$ confidence level and a Bayes factor of 200. When we include multipoles $\ell \leq 1$, the Bayes factor evidence for quadrupole correlations decreases by more than an order of magnitude due to evidence for a monopolar signal at approximately 4 nHz which has also been noted in previous analyses of the NANOGrav 15-year data. Further work needs to be done in order to better characterize the properties of this monopolar signal and its effect on the evidence for quadrupolar angular correlations., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

6. An Improved Bound on Nonlinear Quantum Mechanics using a Cryogenic Radio Frequency Experiment

Abstract: There are strong arguments that quantum mechanics may be nonlinear in its dynamics. A discovery of nonlinearity would hint at a novel understanding of the interplay between gravity and quantum field theory, for example. As such, experiments searching for potential nonlinear effects in the electromagnetic sector are important. Here we outline such an experiment, consisting of a stream of random bits (which were generated using Rigetti's Aspen-M-3 chip) as input to an RF signal generator coupled to a cryogenic detector. Projective measurements of the qubit state, which is originally prepared in an equal superposition, serve as the random binary output of a signal generator. Thereafter, spectral analysis of the RF detector would yield a detectable excess signal predicted to arise from such a nonlinear effect. A comparison between the projective measurements of the quantum bits vs the classical baseline showed no power excess. This sets a new limit on the electromagnetic nonlinearity parameter $|\epsilon| \lessapprox 1.15 \times 10^{-12}$, at a 90.0% confidence level. This is the most stringent limit on nonlinear quantum mechanics thus far and an improvement by nearly a factor of 50 over the previous experimental limit.

7. Reducing Dynamic Range in Bistatic Backscatter Communication via Beamforming Design

Abstract: Considering the exponential growth of Internet-of-Things devices and the goals toward sustainable networks, the complexity should be focused on the infrastructure side. For a massive number of passive devices, backscatter communication (BC) is a promising technology that reduces cost and increases energy efficiency by enabling transmitting information by backscattering radio frequency signals. Two main limitations that restrict the performance of BC are the round-trip path loss effect and the direct link interference (DLI) from the carrier emitter (CE). To circumvent this, we propose a novel transmit beamforming design for a multiple antenna bistatic BC (BiBC) system that realizes both purposes: mitigation of the DLI and increasing the power towards the backscatter device (BD). Additionally, we provide a detector design and the performance is evaluated in terms of the probability of error, for which we also provide a closed-form expression. Finally, simulation results show the superiority of the proposed beamforming design in decreasing DLI over a benchmark scenario that considers maximum-ratio transmission., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The detection of a stochastic gravitational wave background by pulsar timing arrays suggests the presence of a supermassive black hole binary population. Although the observed spectrum generally aligns with predictions from orbital evolution driven by gravitational wave emission in circular orbits, there is a discernible preference for a turnover at the lowest observed frequencies. This turnover could indicate a significant hardening phase, transitioning from early environmental influences to later stages predominantly influenced by gravitational wave emission. In the vicinity of these binaries, the ejection of stars or dark matter particles through gravitational three-body slingshots efficiently extracts orbital energy, leading to a low-frequency turnover in the spectrum. By analyzing the NANOGrav 15-year data, we assess how the gravitational wave spectrum depends on the initial inner galactic profile prior to disruption by binary ejections, accounting for a range of initial binary eccentricities. Our findings suggest a parsec-scale galactic center density around $10^6\,M_\odot/\textrm{pc}^3$ across most of the parameter space, offering insights into the environmental effects on black hole evolution and combined matter density near galaxy centers., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

9. Misclassification of Vaccination Status in Electronic Health Records: A Bayesian Approach in Cluster Randomized Trials

Abstract: Misclassification in binary outcomes is not uncommon and statistical methods to investigate its impact on policy-driving study results are lacking. While misclassifying binary outcomes is a statistically ubiquitous phenomena, we focus on misclassification in a public health application: vaccinations. One such study design in public health that addresses policy is the cluster controlled randomized trial (CCRT). A CCRT that measures the impact of a novel behavioral intervention on increasing vaccine uptake can be severely biased when the supporting data are incomplete vaccination records. In particular, these vaccine records more often may be prone to negative misclassification, that is, a clinic's record of an individual patient's vaccination status may be unvaccinated when, in reality, this patient was vaccinated outside of the clinic. With large nation-wide endeavors to encourage vaccinations without a gold-standard vaccine record system, sensitivity analyses that incorporate misclassification rates are promising for robust inference. In this work we introduce a novel extension of Bayesian logistic regression where we perturb the clinic size and vaccination count with random draws from expert-elicited prior distributions. These prior distributions represent the misclassification rates for each clinic that stochastically add unvaccinated counts to the observed vaccinated counts. These prior distributions are assigned for each clinic (the first level in a group-level randomized trial). We demonstrate this method with a data application from a CCRT evaluating the influence of a behavioral intervention on vaccination uptake among U.S. veterans. A simulation study is carried out demonstrating its estimation properties.

10. On Differentially Private Linear Algebra

Abstract: We introduce efficient differentially private (DP) algorithms for several linear algebraic tasks, including solving linear equalities over arbitrary fields, linear inequalities over the reals, and computing affine spans and convex hulls. As an application, we obtain efficient DP algorithms for learning halfspaces and affine subspaces. Our algorithms addressing equalities are strongly polynomial, whereas those addressing inequalities are weakly polynomial. Furthermore, this distinction is inevitable: no DP algorithm for linear programming can be strongly polynomial-time efficient.

11. PyroGuardian: An IoT-Enabled System for Health and Location Monitoring in High-Risk Firefighting Environments

Abstract: First responders risk their lives to reduce property damage and prevent injuries during disasters. Among first responders, firefighters work with fires in residential properties, forests, or other locations where fire occurs. We built the PyroGuardian system that uses wearable modules to transmit unit information over Long Range (LoRa) to an Android tablet. The tablet runs our application, PyroPortal, to assign each firefighter's stats, such as body temperature, heart rate, and GPS location. PyroPortal displays this information on unit dashboards, and markers on Google Maps represent the firefighter's location and the direction they are facing. These dashboards can help the incident commander (IC) make more informed decisions on mission control operations and remove specific units whose health stats, such as oximeter and pulse, passed certain thresholds. PyroGuardian completes all these tasks at an affordable cost and in an impressive maximum range between the units and IC. In addition, PyroGuardian has various application scenarios, such as law enforcement and military operations, besides firefighting. We also conducted a sample mission inside a burning building while real firefighters watched. After the demonstration, they completed a survey on system usability and PyroGuardian's potential to meet their requirements.

Abstract: JWST, despite not being designed to observe astrophysical phenomena that vary on rapid time scales, can be an unparalleled tool for such studies. If timing systematics can be controlled, JWST will be able to open up the sub-second infrared timescale regime. Rapid time-domain studies, such as lag measurements in accreting compact objects and Solar System stellar occultations, require both precise inter-frame timing and knowing when a time series begins to an absolute accuracy significantly below 1s. In this work we present two long-duration observations of the deeply eclipsing double white dwarf system ZTF J153932.16+502738.8, which we use as a natural timing calibrator to measure the absolute timing accuracy of JWST's clock. 14. Chiral edge states on spheres for lattice domain wall fermions

Abstract: Recently Weyl edge states on manifolds in dimension $d+1$ with a connected $d$-dimensional boundary were proposed as candidates for lattice regularization of chiral gauge theories, for even $d$. The examples considered to date include solid cylinders in any odd dimension, and the 3-ball with boundary $S^2$. Here we consider the general case of a $(d+1)$-dimensional ball for any even $d$ and show that the theory for the edge states on $S^d$ describe a conventional Weyl fermion on a sphere with half-integer momenta. A possible advantage of such theories is that they can be discretized by a square lattice without breaking the underlying discrete hypercubic symmetry.

Abstract: Sufficiently capable models could subvert human oversight and decision-making in important contexts. For example, in the context of AI development, models could covertly sabotage efforts to evaluate their own dangerous capabilities, to monitor their behavior, or to make decisions about their deployment. We refer to this family of abilities as sabotage capabilities. We develop a set of related threat models and evaluations. These evaluations are designed to provide evidence that a given model, operating under a given set of mitigations, could not successfully sabotage a frontier model developer or other large organization's activities in any of these ways. We demonstrate these evaluations on Anthropic's Claude 3 Opus and Claude 3.5 Sonnet models. Our results suggest that for these models, minimal mitigations are currently sufficient to address sabotage risks, but that more realistic evaluations and stronger mitigations seem likely to be necessary soon as capabilities improve. We also survey related evaluations we tried and abandoned. Finally, we discuss the advantages of mitigation-aware capability evaluations, and of simulating large-scale deployments using small-scale statistics.

Abstract: GPT-4o is an autoregressive omni model that accepts as input any combination of text, audio, image, and video, and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs. It's trained end-to-end across text, vision, and audio, meaning all inputs and outputs are processed by the same neural network. GPT-4o can respond to audio inputs in as little as 232 milliseconds, with an average of 320 milliseconds, which is similar to human response time in conversation. It matches GPT-4 Turbo performance on text in English and code, with significant improvement on text in non-English languages, while also being much faster and 50\% cheaper in the API. GPT-4o is especially better at vision and audio understanding compared to existing models. In line with our commitment to building AI safely and consistent with our voluntary commitments to the White House, we are sharing the GPT-4o System Card, which includes our Preparedness Framework evaluations. In this System Card, we provide a detailed look at GPT-4o's capabilities, limitations, and safety evaluations across multiple categories, focusing on speech-to-speech while also evaluating text and image capabilities, and measures we've implemented to ensure the model is safe and aligned. We also include third-party assessments on dangerous capabilities, as well as discussion of potential societal impacts of GPT-4o's text and vision capabilities.

17. On the Use of Proxies in Political Ad Targeting

Abstract: Detailed targeting of advertisements has long been one of the core offerings of online platforms. Unfortunately, malicious advertisers have frequently abused such targeting features, with results that range from violating civil rights laws to driving division, polarization, and even social unrest. Platforms have often attempted to mitigate this behavior by removing targeting attributes deemed problematic, such as inferred political leaning, religion, or ethnicity. In this work, we examine the effectiveness of these mitigations by collecting data from political ads placed on Facebook in the lead up to the 2022 U.S. midterm elections. We show that major political advertisers circumvented these mitigations by targeting proxy attributes: seemingly innocuous targeting criteria that closely correspond to political and racial divides in American society. We introduce novel methods for directly measuring the skew of various targeting criteria to quantify their effectiveness as proxies, and then examine the scale at which those attributes are used. Our findings have crucial implications for the ongoing discussion on the regulation of political advertising and emphasize the urgency for increased transparency.

Traditional prediction methods based on historical data have their limits in forecasting, but recent advancements in natural language processing bring new possibilities for event-based analysis. In particular, Language Models (LM) and their advancement, the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT), have shown potential in classifying vast amounts of natural language. However, these LMs often have difficulty with domain-specific terminology, limiting their effectiveness in the crude oil sector. Addressing this gap, we introduce CrudeBERT, a fine-tuned LM specifically for the crude oil market. The results indicate that CrudeBERT's sentiment scores align more closely with the WTI Futures curve and significantly enhance price predictions, underscoring the crucial role of integrating economic principles into LMs.

Abstract: The NOvA collaboration reports cross-section measurements for $\nu_{\mu}$ charged-current interactions with low hadronic energy (maximum kinetic energy of 250 MeV for protons and 175 MeV for pions) in the NOvA Near Detector. The results are presented as a double-differential cross section as a function of the direct observables of the final-state muon kinematics. Results are also presented as a single-differential cross section as a function of the derived square of the four-momentum transfer, $Q^{2}$, and as a function of the derived neutrino energy. The data correspond to an accumulated 8.09$\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target (POT) in the neutrino mode of the NuMI beam, with a narrow band of neutrino energies peaked at 1.8 GeV. The analysis provides a sample of neutrino-nucleus interactions with an enhanced fraction of quasi-elastic and two-particle-two-hole (2p2h) interactions. This enhancement allows quantitative comparisons with various nuclear models. We find strong disagreement between data and theory-based models in various regions of the muon kinematic phase space, especially in the forward muon direction., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. 20. From Tokens to Words: On the Inner Lexicon of LLMs

Abstract: Natural language is composed of words, but modern LLMs process sub-words as input. A natural question raised by this discrepancy is whether LLMs encode words internally, and if so how. We present evidence that LLMs engage in an intrinsic detokenization process, where sub-word sequences are combined into coherent word representations. Our experiments show that this process takes place primarily within the early and middle layers of the model. They also show that it is robust to non-morphemic splits, typos and perhaps importantly-to out-of-vocabulary words: when feeding the inner representation of such words to the model as input vectors, it can "understand" them despite never seeing them during training. Our findings suggest that LLMs maintain a latent vocabulary beyond the tokenizer's scope. These insights provide a practical, finetuning-free application for expanding the vocabulary of pre-trained models. By enabling the addition of new vocabulary words, we reduce input length and inference iterations, which reduces both space and model latency, with little to no loss in model accuracy.

Abstract: Double- and single-differential cross sections for inclusive charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering are reported for the kinematic domain 0 to 2 GeV/c in three-momentum transfer and 0 to 2 GeV in available energy, at a mean muon-neutrino energy of 1.86 GeV. The measurements are based on an estimated 995,760 muon-neutrino CC interactions in the scintillator medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The subdomain populated by 2-particle-2-hole reactions is identified by the cross-section excess relative to predictions for neutrino-nucleus scattering that are constrained by a data control sample. Models for 2-particle-2- hole processes are rated by chi-square comparisons of the predicted-versus-measured muon-neutrino CC inclusive cross section over the full phase space and in the restricted subdomain. Abstract: We present our analysis of supernovae serendipitously found to be radio-bright several years after their optical discovery. We used recent observations from the Australian SKA Pathfinder taken as part of the pilot Variables and Slow Transients and Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey programs. We identified 29 objects by cross-matching sources from these ASKAP observations with known core-collapse supernovae below a declination of $+40^{\circ}$ and with a redshift of $z\leq0.15$. Our results focus on eight cases that show potential late-time radio emission. These supernovae exhibit significantly greater amounts of radio emission than expected from the standard model of a single shockwave propagating through a spherical circumstellar medium, with a constant density structure produced by regular stellar mass-loss. We also discuss how we can learn from future ASKAP surveys about the circumstellar environments and emission mechanisms of supernovae that undergo late-time radio re-brightening. 23. Start with Equity: NC Early Childhood Education Equity Analyses Project

Abstract: Despite increased attention to racial disparities in health, wellbeing, and academic outcomes--especially for Black, Latine, and Native American children and children from low-income households--little progress has been made in identifying the root causes of those disparities and, more importantly, identifying equitable policies and strategies to mitigate centuries of oppression and systemic inequities. There is a need to ensure that policies are developed with a racial equity and economic justice lens to activate and support transformation during children's early years, especially for those populations that have been historically marginalized and underrepresented. For this report, researchers conducted a landscape analyses and engaged with grassroots and grasstops early education partners to identify policies and strategies that show effect or promise in mitigating racial and economic disparities in early care and education (ECE). The research also focused on how policies can be more effectively enacted and implemented to advance equity. Its findings are presented in three core sections: (1) Child Opportunity Index (COI); (2) Disproportionality Analyses; and (3) Voices from the ECE Field. 24. Examining School Principals' and Teachers' Perceptions of Using ChatGPT in Education

Abstract: Background/purpose: ChatGPT has become one of the groundbreaking examples of artificial intelligence-based chatbots with its capacity to produce texts and engage in human-like conversations. Therefore, it has garnered the attention of people with diverse backgrounds, including educational professionals. The current study aims to investigate how school principals and teachers perceived the use of ChatGPT in education and reveal their attitudes towards using AI-based tools to facilitate the teaching-learning experience. Materials/methods: The study was designed using the qualitative case study method since it aimed to gather detailed information regarding school principals' and teachers' perceptions of ChatGPT. Data was collected from 80 teachers and school principals selected purposefully from public primary, secondary, and high schools. Data was analyzed using content analysis techniques by synthesizing codes into categories and themes. Results: The study revealed four major themes regarding school principals' and teachers' perceptions of ChatGPT: overall perceptions, perceived opportunities, perceived risks, and the effective use of ChatGPT. The participants referred to several advantages of using ChatGPT in education such as lesson planning, offering customized learning, and enabling easy and fast access to information. They were also cautious about some risks such as ethical and responsible use, the likelihood of encouraging dishonesty, free-riding, cheating, or plagiarism as well as weakening students' cognitive skills. Due to its potential to provide inaccurate information depending on the reliability of its data source, they were also doubtful that it could provide students with false guidance in its current form. The participants also made some recommendations to make better and more effective use of ChatGPT in education such as providing ongoing training for both teachers and students on recent developments, increasing the reliability of its data sources through continuous tests, and aligning its capacity with the readiness and age of students. Conclusion: The current study showed that school principals and teachers had sufficient knowledge of ChatGPT and mostly had a positive attitude towards its use in education despite some risks. Combined with the findings of prior studies, the current results suggest taking several steps to minimize the risks and offering both pre-and in-service training to teachers for more effective use.

25. Master's Students' Decisions on Pursuing a Doctoral Degree: Influencing Factors

Abstract: This research aimed to reveal the decisions of master's students about whether to pursue their doctoral degree or not and the factors affecting these decisions. The participants of this research, in which the basic qualitative research design was used, consisted of 28 students (19 female and 9 male) in different parts of the educational sciences departments. To gather the data from the participants, a semi-structured interview form, which was prepared by the researchers, was used. The participants' answers were analyzed via the content analysis method and categorized under the main themes of personal, professional, and academic factors. The research findings are explained in light of the details given in the theoretical framework section, namely postgraduate education, reasons to pursue postgraduate education, and reasons for not completing postgraduate education. The findings demonstrated that the majority of the participants were willing to pursue a doctoral degree. According to the results, it was seen that the participants' master's degree experiences affected their decision to be willing or unwilling to pursue their education and enroll in doctoral studies. However, the participants also stated that they didn't have much knowledge about doctoral degree during their master's degree and could only get information with their own efforts. This finding showed that master's degree students needed to be informed more about doctoral degree at the master's degree level.

26. 'Taking Action': Reflections on Forming and Facilitating a Peer-Led Social Justice Advocacy Group

Abstract: According to the American Counseling Association and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, social justice advocacy is an ethical imperative for counselors and a training standard for counseling students. As a group of socially conscious mental health counseling students and faculty, we developed and facilitated a social justice advocacy group to learn about tangible ways to engage in social justice action. Using the S-Quad model developed by Toporek and Ahluwalia, we formed and facilitated a social justice advocacy group for our peers. This paper will serve as a reflection of our experiences engaging in the process.

27. Adaptation Process to School after Pandemic in Turkish Context

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analyze the post-pandemic school adaptation process, the existence and/or effectiveness of adaptation programs, the obstacles encountered during this process, and thoughts and solutions for dealing with the difficulties. Two different surveys were delivered to schools via Google form, with 3,625 students and 1,822 teachers filling them out. According to the findings of the study, 86 percent of students were excited to return to school. Despite this, high academic demands of family and teachers, bullying, failure to manage time, the danger of being COVID, teacher and friend relationships, and failing examinations are among the primary concerns of students. Teachers, contrary to student statistics, believe that students' adaptation to school after the pandemic is moderate. Teachers report that students struggle with following school rules, demonstrating constructive communication skills, emotion control, age-appropriate academic competencies, social skills, and life skills.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: TROP2 (TACSTD2) expression is associated with decreased overall survival (OS) in some solid tumors, and the TROP2-targeting antibody-drug conjugate (ADC) sacituzumab govitecan has been approved in breast and urothelial carcinomas. We aimed to explore the multi-omic landscape associated with TACSTD2 gene expression in various solid tumors to identify patients most likely to benefit from this approach. METHODS: Breast (N = 11 246), colorectal (N = 15 425), hepatocellular (N = 433), pancreatic (N = 5488), and urothelial (N = 4125) tumors were stratified into quartiles by TACSTD2 gene expression, analyzed by next-generation DNA sequencing, whole transcriptome sequencing, and immunohistochemistry at Caris Life Sciences (Phoenix, AZ). Survival data were obtained from insurance claims, and Kaplan-Meier estimates were calculated for molecularly defined cohorts. RESULTS: Several pathogenic mutations were associated with TACSTD2-high tumors, including TP53 in breast, colorectal (CRC), pancreatic, and hepatocellular cancers; KRAS in pancreatic and CRC cancers; ARID1A and FGFR3 in urothelial cancer; and CTNNB1 in hepatocellular cancer. TACSTD2-low breast tumors were enriched for copy number amplifications in CCND1 and FGF/R family member genes. TACSTD2 high was generally associated with more immune cell infiltration and greater T-cell inflammation scores. Patients with TACSTD2-high breast, CRC, and pancreatic cancers demonstrated a significantly shorter OS than TACSTD2-low tumors. This was restricted to CRC with microsatellite stable tumors and patients with pancreatic cancer with KRAS-mutant tumors. Patients with breast cancer with TACSTD2-high tumors also experienced significantly worse OS following immune checkpoint inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS: TACSTD2 expression is associated with key driver alterations and a more active immune microenvironment, suggesting possible combinatorial strategies with TROP2-targeting ADCs plus immunotherapy in various solid tumors.

Abstract: Meningeal solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) are rare and have a high frequency of local recurrence and distant metastasis. In a cohort of 126 patients (57 female, 69 male; mean age at surgery 53.0 years) with pathologically confirmed meningeal SFTs with extended clinical follow-up (median 9.9 years; range 15 days-43 years), we performed extensive molecular characterization including genome-wide DNA methylation profiling (n = 80) and targeted TERT promoter mutation testing (n = 98). Associations were examined with NAB2::STAT6 fusion status (n = 101 cases; 51 = ex5-7::ex16-17, 26 = ex4::ex2-3; 12 = ex2-3::exANY/other and 12 = no fusion) and placed in the context of 2021 Central Nervous System (CNS) WHO grade. NAB2::STAT6 fusion breakpoints (fusion type) were significantly associated with metastasis-free survival (MFS) (p = 0.03) and, on multivariate analysis, disease-specific survival (DSS) when adjusting for CNS WHO grade (p = 0.03). Abstract: Subjective well-being (SWB) is often described as being U-shaped over adulthood, declining to a midlife slump and then improving thereafter. Improved SWB in later adulthood has been considered a paradox given age-related declines in health and social losses. While SWB has mostly been studied in high-income countries, it remains largely unexplored in rural subsistence populations lacking formal institutions that reliably promote social welfare. Here, we evaluate the age profile of SWB among three small-scale subsistence societies (n = 468; study 1), forest users from 23 low-income countries (n = 6987; study 2), and Tsimane horticulturalists (n = 1872; study 3). Across multiple specifications, we find variability in SWB age profiles. In some cases, we find no age-related differences in SWB or even inverted U-shapes. Adjusting for confounders reduces observed age effects. Our findings highlight variability in average well-being trajectories over the life course. Ensuring successful aging will require a greater focus on cultural and socioecological determinants of individual trajectories.

Abstract: Industrialized environments, despite benefits such as higher levels of formal education and lower rates of infections, can also have pernicious impacts upon brain atrophy. Partly for this reason, comparing age-related brain volume trajectories between industrialized and non-industrialized populations can help to suggest lifestyle correlates of brain health. The Tsimane, indigenous to the Bolivian Amazon, derive their subsistence from foraging and horticulture and are physically active. The Moseten, a mixed-ethnicity farming population, are physically active but less than the Tsimane. Within both populations (N = 1024; age range = 46-83), we calculated regional brain volumes from computed tomography and compared their cross-sectional trends with age to those of UK Biobank (UKBB) participants (N = 19,973; same age range). Surprisingly among Tsimane and Moseten (T/M) males, some parietal and occipital structures mediating visuospatial abilities exhibit small but significant increases in regional volume with age. UKBB males exhibit a steeper negative trend of regional volume with age in frontal and temporal structures compared to T/M males. However, T/M females exhibit significantly steeper rates of brain volume decrease with age compared to UKBB females, particularly for some cerebro-cortical structures (e.g., left subparietal cortex). Across the three populations, observed trends exhibit no interhemispheric asymmetry. In conclusion, the age-related rate of regional brain volume change may differ by lifestyle and sex. The lack of brain volume reduction with age is not known to exist in other human population, highlighting the putative role of lifestyle in constraining regional brain atrophy and promoting elements of non-industrialized lifestyle like higher physical activity.

Abstract: Quantum theories of gravity are generally expected to have some degree of non-locality, with familiar local physics emerging only in a particular limit. Perturbative quantum gravity around backgrounds with isometries and compact Cauchy slices provides an interesting laboratory in which this emergence can be explored. In this context, the remaining isometries are gauge symmetries and, as a result, gauge-invariant observables cannot be localized. Instead, local physics can arise only through certain relational constructions. We explore such issues below for perturbative quantum gravity around de Sitter space. In particular, we describe a class of gauge-invariant observables which, under appropriate conditions, provide good approximations to certain algebras of local fields. Our results suggest that, near any minimal $S^d$ in dS$_{d+1}$, this approximation can be accurate only over regions in which the corresponding global time coordinate $t$ spans an interval $\Delta t \lesssim O(\ln G^{-1})$. In contrast, however, we find that the approximation can be accurate over arbitrarily large regions of global dS$_{d+1}$ so long as those regions are located far to the future or past of such a minimal $S^d$. Abstract: This paper introduces the hypothetical track-length fitting algorithm, a novel method for measuring the kinetic energies of ionizing particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

Abstract: Light, weakly coupled bosonic particles such as axions can mediate long range monopole-dipole interactions between matter and spins. We propose a new experimental method using atom interferometry to detect such a force on a freely falling atom exerted by the spin of electrons. The intrinsic advantages of atom interferometry, such as the freely falling nature of the atom and the well-defined response of the atom to external magnetic fields, should enable the proposed method to overcome systematic effects induced by vibrations, magnetic fields, and gravity. This approach is most suited to probe forces with a range $\gtrsim$~10~cm. With current technology, our proposed setup could potentially extend probes of such forces by an order of magnitude beyond present laboratory limits., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The family of right-angled tiling links consists of links built from regular 4-valent tilings of constant-curvature surfaces that contain one or two types of tiles. The complements of these links admit complete hyperbolic structures and contain two totally geodesic checkerboard surfaces that meet at right angles. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of which right-angled tiling links are arithmetic, and which are pairwise commensurable. The arithmeticity classification exploits symmetry arguments and the combinatorial geometry of Coxeter polyhedra. The commensurability classification relies on identifying the canonical decompositions of the link complements, in addition to number-theoretic data from invariant trace fields., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures

37. Topological superconductivity from repulsive interactions in twisted WSe$_2$

Abstract: The recent observation of superconductivity in twisted bilayer WSe$_2$ raises intriguing questions concerning the origin and the properties of superconducting states realized in bands with non-trivial topological properties and repulsive electron-electron interactions. Using a continuum band structure model, we analyze a mechanism for Coulomb interaction-driven superconductivity in twisted bilayers of WSe$_2$. We discuss the symmetries and the phenomenological properties of the resulting superconducting phases and their evolution with interlayer potential difference, tunable via an out of plane electric field. The pairing strength is a non-monotonic function of interlayer potential, being larger at intermediate values due to mixing of singlet and triplet pairing. In contrast, at larger interlayer potential, the pairing tendency is suppressed due to enhanced Coulomb repulsion. The superconducting state is chiral in a large regime of parameters and undergoes a transition to a nodal nematic superconductor at a critical potential difference. The chiral state, characterized by an intervalley-symmetric superposition of triplet and singlet pairs, is classified as a topological superconductor within the Altland-Zirnbauer class C. At zero interlayer potential difference, the superconducting state is instead of class D, which hosts Majorana zero modes, making it a promising candidate for applications in quantum computation., Comment: 9+11 pages, 4+9 figures

38. Inference on Consensus Ranking of Distributions

Abstract: Instead of testing for unanimous agreement, I propose learning how broad of a consensus favors one distribution over another (of earnings, productivity, asset returns, test scores, etc.). Specifically, given a sample from each of two distributions, I propose statistical inference methods to learn about the set of utility functions for which the first distribution has higher expected utility than the second distribution. With high probability, an "inner" confidence set is contained within this true set, while an "outer" confidence set contains the true set. Such confidence sets can be formed by inverting a proposed multiple testing procedure that controls the familywise error rate. Theoretical justification comes from empirical process results, given that very large classes of utility functions are generally Donsker (subject to finite moments). The theory additionally justifies a uniform (over utility functions) confidence band of expected utility differences, as well as tests with a utility-based "restricted stochastic dominance" as either the null or alternative hypothesis. Abstract: The international collaboration designing and constructing the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) at the Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) has developed a two-phase strategy toward the implementation of this leading-edge, large-scale science project. The 2023 report of the US Particle Physics Project Prioritization Panel (P5) reaffirmed this vision and strongly endorsed DUNE Phase I and Phase II, as did the European Strategy for Particle Physics. While the construction of the DUNE Phase I is well underway, this White Paper focuses on DUNE Phase II planning. DUNE Phase-II consists of a third and fourth far detector (FD) module, an upgraded near detector complex, and an enhanced 2.1 MW beam. The fourth FD module is conceived as a "Module of Opportunity", aimed at expanding the physics opportunities, in addition to supporting the core DUNE science program, with more advanced technologies. This document highlights the increased science opportunities offered by the DUNE Phase II near and far detectors, including long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics, neutrino astrophysics, and physics beyond the standard model. It describes the DUNE Phase II near and far detector technologies and detector design concepts that are currently under consideration. A summary of key R&D goals and prototyping phases needed to realize the Phase II detector technical designs is also provided. DUNE's Phase II detectors, along with the increased beam power, will complete the full scope of DUNE, enabling a multi-decadal program of groundbreaking science with neutrinos.

Abstract: The NANOGrav 15-year data provides compelling evidence for a stochastic gravitational-wave (GW) background at nanohertz frequencies. The simplest model-independent approach to characterizing the frequency spectrum of this signal consists in a simple power-law fit involving two parameters: an amplitude A and a spectral index \gamma. In this paper, we consider the next logical step beyond this minimal spectral model, allowing for a running (i.e., logarithmic frequency dependence) of the spectral index, \gamma_run(f) = \gamma + \beta \ln(f/f_ref). We fit this running-power-law (RPL) model to the NANOGrav 15-year data and perform a Bayesian model comparison with the minimal constant-power-law (CPL) model, which results in a 95% credible interval for the parameter \beta consistent with no running, \beta \in [-0.80,2.96], and an inconclusive Bayes factor, B(RPL vs. CPL) = 0.69 +- 0.01. We thus conclude that, at present, the minimal CPL model still suffices to adequately describe the NANOGrav signal; however, future data sets may well lead to a measurement of nonzero \beta. Finally, we interpret the RPL model as a description of primordial GWs generated during cosmic inflation, which allows us to combine our results with upper limits from big-bang nucleosynthesis, the cosmic microwave background, and LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

41. SER Evals: In-domain and Out-of-domain Benchmarking for Speech Emotion Recognition

Abstract: Speech emotion recognition (SER) has made significant strides with the advent of powerful self-supervised learning (SSL) models. However, the generalization of these models to diverse languages and emotional expressions remains a challenge. We propose a large-scale benchmark to evaluate the robustness and adaptability of state-of-the-art SER models in both in-domain and out-of-domain settings. Our benchmark includes a diverse set of multilingual datasets, focusing on less commonly used corpora to assess generalization to new data. We employ logit adjustment to account for varying class distributions and establish a single dataset cluster for systematic evaluation. Surprisingly, we find that the Whisper model, primarily designed for automatic speech recognition, outperforms dedicated SSL models in cross-lingual SER. Our results highlight the need for more robust and generalizable SER models, and our benchmark serves as a valuable resource to drive future research in this direction., Comment: Accepted at INTERSPEECH 2024

Abstract: Suppose that $G$ is a graph of cardinality $\mu^+$ with chromatic number $\chi(G)\geq \mu^+$. One possible reason that this could happen is if $G$ contains a clique of size $\mu^+$. We prove that this is indeed the case when the edge relation is stable. When $G$ is a random graph (which is simple but not stable), this is not true. But still if in general the complete theory of $G$ is simple, $G$ must contain finite cliques of unbounded sizes.

Abstract: ProtoDUNE Single-Phase (ProtoDUNE-SP) is a 770-ton liquid argon time projection chamber that operated in a hadron test beam at the CERN Neutrino Platform in 2018. We present a measurement of the total inelastic cross section of charged kaons on argon as a function of kaon energy using 6 and 7 GeV/$c$ beam momentum settings. The flux-weighted average of the extracted inelastic cross section at each beam momentum setting was measured to be 380$\pm$26 mbarns for the 6 GeV/$c$ setting and 379$\pm$35 mbarns for the 7 GeV/$c$ setting.

Abstract: Pulsar-timing-array experiments have reported evidence for a stochastic background of nanohertz gravitational waves consistent with the signal expected from a population of supermassive--black-hole binaries. Those analyses assume power-law spectra for intrinsic pulsar noise and for the background, as well as a Hellings--Downs cross-correlation pattern among the gravitational-wave--induced residuals across pulsars. These assumptions are idealizations that may not be realized in actuality. We test them in the NANOGrav 15 yr data set using Bayesian posterior predictive checks: after fitting our fiducial model to real data, we generate a population of simulated data-set replications, and use them to assess whether the optimal-statistic significance, inter-pulsar correlations, and spectral coefficients assume extreme values for the real data when compared to the replications. We confirm that the NANOGrav 15 yr data set is consistent with power-law and Hellings--Downs assumptions. We also evaluate the evidence for the stochastic background using posterior-predictive versions of the frequentist optimal statistic and of Bayesian model comparison, and find comparable significance (3.2\ $\sigma$ and 3\ $\sigma$ respectively) to what was previously reported for the standard statistics. We conclude with novel visualizations of the reconstructed gravitational waveforms that enter the residuals for each pulsar. 45. Access Point Selection for Bistatic Backscatter Communication in Cell-Free MIMO

Abstract: Backscatter communication (BC) has emerged as a key technology to satisfy the increasing need for low-cost and green Internet-of-Things (IoT) connectivity, especially in large-scale deployments. Unlike the monostatic BC (MoBC), the bistatic BC (BiBC) has the possibility to decrease the round-trip path loss by having the carrier emitter (CE) and the reader in different locations. Therefore, this work investigates the BiBC in the context of cell-free multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks by exploring the optimal selection of CE and reader among all access points, leveraging prior knowledge about the area where the backscatter device (BD) is located. First, a maximum a posteriori probability (MAP) detector to decode the BD information bits is derived. Then, the exact probability of error for this detector is obtained. In addition, an algorithm to select the best CE-reader pair for serving the specified area is proposed. Finally, simulation results show that the error performance of the BC is improved by the proposed algorithm compared to the benchmark scenario.

46. When Can Transformers Count to n?

Abstract: Large language models based on the transformer architectures can solve highly complex tasks. But are there simple tasks that such models cannot solve? Here we focus on very simple counting tasks, that involve counting how many times a token in the vocabulary have appeared in a string. We show that if the dimension of the transformer state is linear in the context length, this task can be solved. However, the solution we propose does not scale beyond this limit, and we provide theoretical arguments for why it is likely impossible for a size limited transformer to implement this task. Our empirical results demonstrate the same phase-transition in performance, as anticipated by the theoretical argument. Our results demonstrate the importance of understanding how transformers can solve simple tasks.

Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) have been recently used in robot applications for grounding LLM common-sense reasoning with the robot's perception and physical abilities. In humanoid robots, memory also plays a critical role in fostering real-world embodiment and facilitating long-term interactive capabilities, especially in multi-task setups where the robot must remember previous task states, environment states, and executed actions. In this paper, we address incorporating memory processes with LLMs for generating cross-task robot actions, while the robot effectively switches between tasks. Our proposed dual-layered architecture features two LLMs, utilizing their complementary skills of reasoning and following instructions, combined with a memory model inspired by human cognition. Our results show a significant improvement in performance over a baseline of five robotic tasks, demonstrating the potential of integrating memory with LLMs for combining the robot's action and perception for adaptive task execution.

Abstract: Long-period radio transients are an emerging class of extreme astrophysical events of which only three are known. These objects emit highly polarised, coherent pulses of typically a few tens of seconds duration and minutes to hour-long periods. While magnetic white dwarfs and magnetars, either isolated or in binary systems, have been invoked to explain these objects, a consensus has not emerged. Here we report on the discovery of ASKAP J193505.1+214841.0 (henceforth ASKAPJ1935+2148) with a period of 53.8 minutes exhibiting three distinct emission states - a bright pulse state with highly linearly polarised pulses with widths of 10-50 seconds; a weak pulse state which is about 26 times fainter than the bright state with highly circularly polarised pulses of widths of approximately 370 milliseconds; and a quiescent or quenched state with no pulses. The first two states have been observed to progressively evolve over the course of 8 months with the quenched state interspersed between them suggesting physical changes in the region producing the emission. A constraint on the radius of the source for the observed period rules out a magnetic white dwarf origin. Unlike other long-period sources, ASKAPJ1935+2148 is the first to exhibit drastic variations in emission modes reminiscent of neutron stars. Abstract: Late-time ($\sim$ year) radio follow-up of optically-discovered tidal disruption events (TDEs) is increasingly resulting in detections at radio wavelengths, and there is growing evidence for this late-time radio activity to be common to the broad class of sub-relativistic TDEs. Detailed studies of some of these TDEs at radio wavelengths are also challenging the existing models for radio emission. Using all-sky multi-epoch data from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), taken as a part of the Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS), we searched for radio counterparts to a sample of optically-discovered TDEs. We detected late-time emission at RACS frequencies (742-1032\,MHz) in five TDEs, reporting the independent discovery of radio emission from TDE AT2019ahk and extending the time baseline out to almost 3000\,days for some events. Overall, we find that at least $22^{+15}_{-11}$\% of the population of optically-discovered TDEs has detectable radio emission in the RACS survey, while also noting that the true fraction can be higher given the limited cadence (2 epochs separated by $\sim 3\,$ years) of the survey. Finally, we project that the ongoing higher-cadence ($\sim 2$\,months) ASKAP Variable and Slow Transients (VAST) survey can detect $\sim 20$ TDEs in its operational span (4\,yrs), given the current rate from optical surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, comments welcome

Abstract: Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have witnessed a surge in both research and real-world applications. However, as they are becoming increasingly prevalent, ensuring their robustness against adversarial attacks is paramount. This work systematically investigates the impact of model design choices on the adversarial robustness of VLMs against image-based attacks. Additionally, we introduce novel, cost-effective approaches to enhance robustness through prompt formatting. By rephrasing questions and suggesting potential adversarial perturbations, we demonstrate substantial improvements in model robustness against strong image-based attacks such as Auto-PGD. Our findings provide important guidelines for developing more robust VLMs, particularly for deployment in safety-critical environments.
