The olfactory and behavioural responses of groundnut seed-beetle, Caryedon serratus Olivier to semiochemicals isolated from conspecific insects as well as from groundnut seed headspace volatiles were investigated by coupled Gas Chromatography-Electroantennogram (GC-EAD) and Y-tube olfactometer bioassays. Significant orientation responses of male bruchids to the headspace volatiles from females and orientation responses of both sexes of seed beetles to headspace volatiles from male extracts confirm the existence of both sex and aggregation pheromone systems in C. serratus. Coupled GC-EAD analyses of headspace volatiles of female extract revealed seven bioactive peaks with strongest antennal responses of males towards flame ionization (FID) peaks at retention times of 3 min and 26 min, respectively. GC-EAD profiles of male headspace volatile extract indicated the presence of three distinct bioactive peaks elicited by both male and female antennae. These findings provided necessary leads for the identification of compounds in order to develop environmentally safe semiochemical-based control method for C. serratus.

Studies on sex pheromone of rice caseworm, Paraponyx stagnalis (Zeller) using EAG and GC-MS indicated the presence of four pheromone compounds viz., Z-13-octadecenyl acetate, Z-9-hexadecenal, Z-11-hexadecenal and Z-11-hexadecenyl acetate in the ovipositor extract. Five different blends prepared from the tentatively identified compounds were evaluated for their field efficacy in rice fields at Pattambi, Kerala. Pheromone blends with Z-13-Octadecenyl acetate alone and with Z-11-Hexadecenal as a two component blend in the ratio of 1: 1 were found promising in attracting more number male moths of rice caseworm in the field study.

The electroantennogram recording technique (EAG) was used to study the olfactory sensitivity of Apanteles obliquae (Hym., Braconidae), a gregarious larval endoparasitoid of Spilosoma obliqua (Walker) (Lep., Arctiidae), to 25 general plant volatiles belonging to alcohol, aldehyde and terpenoid groups and also to volatiles from the host and plant-host complex. The EAG data indicated different olfactory sensitivity between the sexes, not only to individual plant volatiles but also to the volatiles from host and plant-host complex. Females were found to be more responsive than males. However the synthetic sex pheromone blend of the host insect elicited similar EAG responses in both sexes. The EAG data of the present study is correlated with the reported behaviour observed in other parasitoids.

Biological control of the silkworm pest (Exorista bombycis) was partly successful by using a new hymemopteran biocontrol agent Trichopria khandalus, recovered from the environs of a cocoon market in Hindupur district of Andhra Pradesh (India). T. khandalus is a tiny (1–1.5 mm) endoparasite, the females were found to parasitize the uzifly puparia. The progeny developed inside the uzi pupa, and the adults (140–160 individuals from a single pupa) emerged after about 18–25 days depending on the seasonal extrinsic factors. The lift cycle of T. khandalus averaged 32 days. Due to the favourable sex ratio (2:3 male/female) and high preference to parasitize uzi puparia it is qualified as a good biocontrol agent for the control of E. bombycis. Prospects for utilizing this hyperparasite to manage and eliminate the uzi populations are discussed in the light of its data on biology, and easily manageable mass multiplication in the insectary.

Essential oils isolated from leaves (LO), bast (BO), heartwood (HO), and ethereal extract of resin (EER) of Shorea robusta were bioassayed with electroantennograph (EAG) and wind tunnel to study the behavioral response of male and female beetles, Hoplocerambyx spinicornis Newm., the most injurious heartwood borer of the tree. LO, BO, HO, and EER were shown to exhibit the electrophysiological activity in the female beetle, while LO and BO in the male beetle. In wind-tunnel studies, only BO elicited the attractant activity to both the sexes. A possible correlation of the constituents of the BO identified by GC/MS with the bioactivity is also presented.

Hexane extract of male terminalia (along with scent brushes) of castor semi-looper moth, Achaea janata L, elicited significant olfactory responses in both male and female insects by electroantennogram recording technique. However, male extract in the wind tunnel evoked noticeable behaviour responses in the female insects only. Orientation response of the males to the male extract was not evident in wind tunnel experiments. Two electrophysiologically-active compounds were identified from the male extract. Based on GC retention times and mass spectrometry the two compounds were confirmed as (Z,Z)-9,12-octadecadienal and (Z,Z,Z)-3,6,9-heneicosatriene. These two compounds are also constituents of female produced four-component blend of A. janata.

Sensory mechanisms underlying insect chemical communication have been given considerable attention in recent years. A study on the ultrastructural details of the antennal appendages and the pheromone producing structures of Achoea janata L. and Ophiusa algira were studied with scanning electron microscope in order to understand the mechanisms of olfactory perception and pheromone release.For fixation of pheromone producing glands of A.Janata and O.Algira the posterior region of the abdomen was pressed sufficiently and flooded with carnoys fluid for complete excedation of the 9th abdominal along with the ovipositor. The above specimens as well as the antennal appendages were then fixed in 4% glutaraldehyde in phosphate buffer of 7.2 pH dehydrated in increasing grades of ethylalcohol and critical point dried. The specimens were then coated with gold in vacuum evaporator and observed in a Hitachi S-520 evaporator and observed in a Hitachi S-520 SEM operated at 20KV.
