Search

About one hundred magnets of six different types shall be installed in the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) in the years 2026-2028 at CERN. The magnets design, construction and test are based on CERN collaborations with institutes and industrial partners in USA, Spain, Italy, Japan and China. Three types of correctors are based on Nb‒Ti technology and feature conductor peak fields in the 2 to 4 T range: for all of them the prototype phase has been successfully completed. The production is well advanced for the superferric correctors, and is starting for the canted cosine theta correctors and for the nested correctors. The separation and recombination Nb‒Ti dipoles D1 and D2, with a 4.5-6 T bore field range, are both in the prototype phase after the completion of the short model program. The most challenging magnet, the Nb3Sn quadrupole with conductor peak field above 11 T, is in the prototype phase at CERN and halfway through the production phase in the USA. In this paper we will give, for each type of magnet, an overview of the main achievements obtained so far and we will outline the technical points still needing validation from the prototype program.

The name Webbia has been used to describe three different genera: Webbia Spach (Clusiaceae), Webbia DC., nom. illeg. (Asteraceae: Vernonieae), and Webbia Sch.Bip., nom. illeg. (Asteraceae: Astereae). The title of the botanical journal Webbia does not pertain to any of these generic names but is a mere Latinization of the surname Webb, and was created as a patronym that honors the legacy of Philip Barker Webb (1793–1854). The journal is a tribute to Webb’s botanical contributions, and his importance in the development of the collections of the Museo di Storia Naturale di Firenze in the establishment of the Herbarium Webbianum. The journal had an uneasy start, as a book proposal made by the Italian professor (Università di Pisa) Ugolino Martelli to the Società Botanica Italiana to honor Webb was rejected in 1905. The names Conyza obscura DC. and Erigeron capensis Houtt. are lectotypified. The nomenclature of Conyza pinifolia Lam. is revisited, and it is considered a legitimate name. A specimen housed in G-DC is designated as the neotype of this Lamarckian name.

A synthetic synopsis of the herbaria of the 16th century is provided. The list is in chronological order and resumes the general information on the earliest herbaria from the XVI century facilitating the access by the scientific community to this important source of historical information. Fifteen herbaria are listed, of which the oldest date back to the first half of the 16th century. Nine originated in Italy, three in Switzerland, two in Germany and one in France. For each herbarium, data are provided on chronology, geographical origin, format and extent, current place of conservation, and information on cataloguing and digital accessibility when available.

The future High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) at CERN will include the low-beta inner triplets (Q1, Q2a/b, Q3) for two LHC insertion regions. The Q1, Q3 components consist of eight 10 m-long LMQXFA cryo-assemblies fabricated by the HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project. Each LMQXFA Cold mass contains two Nb3Sn magnets connected in series. A stainless-steel shell is welded around the two magnets before the insertion into the cryostat. There is a limit on how much coil preload increase induced by the shell welding is allowed. Distributed Rayleigh backscattering fiber optics sensors were used for the first time to obtain a strain map over a wide area of a Nb3Sn magnet cold mass shell. Data were collected during welding of the first LMQXFA cold mass and the results confirm that the increase of the coil pole azimuthal pre-stress after welding do not exceed requirements.

Superconducting magnet training is one of the accelerator related issues attracting attention due to significant operational costs and time budget associated to it. It is especially worrisome that magnets based on the next-generation Nb3Sn technology are affected by long training. While various efforts are underway to better understand and resolve the problem a parallel path could also be investigated, a path bypassing the issue. Following the concept of fast induced over-current during magnet powering, FNAL has developed an upgradable capacitor-based device to discharge through a superconducting magnet at quench detection or operator chosen time. The 0.4 F/1 kV device has been tested on a 1-m-long dipole-coil in a mirror magnet configuration and conclusive results on magnet training elimination have been observed. In this paper we discuss the main characteristics of the device, compare simulated response and actual performance, elaborate on test drivers and outcomes. Next steps and perspectives for future use are debated.

International audience; Giuseppe Raddi collected in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from November 1817 to June 1818. He published 12 new names in the family Piperaceae in an article that appeared in 1828. Raddi's article has not been cited in specialized literature and these names were never properly studied. In the present study, these names are typified, and their identity is clarified. Five new combinations are here presented, namely Peperomia callitrichoides, P. catesbaeifolia, P. cylindrica, P. gracillima, and P. plantaginifolia. The new name Piper raddianum is published, honoring him and his botanical accomplishments. In addition, the names Piper scutatum, Piper scolopendrifolium, Piper truncatum, Piper fluminense, Steffensia ampla (≡ Piper amplum), Piper variabile, Piper catesbaeafolium, Piper cylindricum, Piper pumilum, Peperomia martiana, and Piper gracillimum are here lectotypified.

We present a field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based technique for the on-line identification of highly ionizing particles in a liquid xenon (LXe) detector. The method was developed and successfully exploited to select $\alpha $ particles emitted by 241Am sources submerged in LXe in an overwhelming, mostly beam-related, $\gamma $ -ray background. After revising the main features of xenon and other liquid noble gases as ultra-violet (UV) scintillating media, we describe the algorithm idea and its firmware implementation. We then present the results in terms of efficiency and background suppression for the real-time $\alpha $ -particle tagging and the limits of the MEG trigger configuration. Finally, we show that in MEG II we are going to overcome the main issues and further improve the performances.

International audience; The genus Berthelotia DC. (presently a synonym of the accepted name Pluchea Cass.), Asteraceae, Inuleae has been regarded as comprising two species, B. lanceolata DC. and B. sericea (Nutt.) Rydb. It honors the French naturalist Sabin Berthelot (1794-1880) for his contribution to the studies of the flora and fauna of the Canary Islands. Under the leadership of Philip B. Webb (1793-1854), Berthelot co-authored the most important work pertinent to the natural history of this archipelago: Histoire Naturelle des Îles Canaries. The nomenclature of Berthelotia and its associated names are revisited here. The holotype of Polypappus sericeus Nutt. (K000974653) was located, and lectotypes were assigned to B. lanceolata (G00450458) and B. lanceolata var. senegalensis DC. (G00452584). Phylogenetic analyses based on nucleotide sequences of the nrDNA ITS were conducted focusing on members of what is known as the Clade J of the Inuleae. A well-supported clade (100% P.P.) that we have labeled as "Clade I" was uncovered, and it is composed of three species that belong to the Pluchea indica Clade plus P. dioscoridis and P. ovalis; but this lineage did not support a previous hypothesis to include P. lanceolata. The two species of Berthelotia did not form a monophyletic group and seem to be distantly related; furthermore, none of these two taxa is sister to 208 Andre A. Naranjo et al. Tessaria, a South American genus that has been suggested to be a close relative to Berthelotia. Ethnobotanical uses of B. lanceolata and B. sericea are reviewed.

Background Carotid plaque ulceration has been associated with imaging characteristics of high risk of future events (plaque vulnerability) in patients with a significant degree of stenosis, while little is known about its role in patients with a lesser degree of stenosis and its association with markers of vascular inflammation. Purpose We evaluated the association between imaging characteristics of plaque vulnerability and vascular inflammation detected by different imaging tests. Methods One hundred and seven patients with unilateral asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis (40–60% detected by Doppler ultrasound (DUS)), enrolled in the ongoing Carotid Artery Multimodality Prognostic (CAMP) study were prospectively evaluated with computed tomography angiography (CTA), contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (CEMRA) and, in a subgroup of patients, with 18-F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET). Plaque ulceration was detected by CTA. Variables are expressed as median (1st–3rd quartiles) and number (percentages).The Student's t-test or Mann-Whitney and Chi square or Fisher's exact test were used to study associations among variables. Results An ulcerated plaque was present in 35% patients (n=33) of those undergoing CTA (n=94), while intraplaque hemorrhage and lipid-rich necrotic core were present in 9% and 15% of those undergoing CEMRA. Compared with patients with non-ulcerated plaques, those with an ulcerated plaque had a significant higher degree of stenosis at DUS, a higher target to background ratio (TBR) at 18F-FDG-PET and a higher high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (cTn) T. Conclusions Plaque ulceration is common and associated with higher degree of stenosis, higher indices of wall inflammation and higher serum markers of myocardial injury. The study aimed to demonstrate that the risk of Cesarean Scar Pregnancy (CSP) for patients with isthmocele decreases when the embryo transfer is performed on day 5 at the blastocyst stage.From January 2014 to December 2021, 167 patients who previously had an IVF treatment and delivered by cesarean section, were selected. The isthmocele was found in 98 of them. Firstly, we evaluated whether the isthmocele increases the risk of CSP. Subsequently, we investigated the possible correlation between the risk of the CSP with the day of the embryo transfer. Hence, the selected patients were divided into two groups: Group A where the embryo transfer was performed at the cleavage stage on day 3 and Group B where the embryo was transferred at the blastocyst stage on day 5.The outcomes show that the isthmocele does not seem to increase the risk of CSP, while the embryo transfer on day 3 increases its rate.When the isthmocele is diagnosed, according to our results, an embryo transfer on day 5 at the blastocyst stage seems to minimize the risk of the CSP.

High tibial osteotomy (HTO) and medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (mUKA) are accepted treatment for medial knee osteoarthritis (OA). Patients often present meeting indications for both procedures. The purpose of this study was to compare results after MOWHTO and UKA in a matched population of patients older than 50 years.A retrospective analysis searching for patients older than 50 years meeting indication both for UKA and MOWHTO was performed. A propensity score matching (PSM) based on demographics and clinical data was performed. Tegner activity scale (TAS), Lysholm knee score (LKS) and numeric rating scale for pain (NRS) were recorded prospectively prior to surgery, at 6 months and after a minimum of 4 years.64 UKA and 71 MOWHTO were found. Mean follow up was similar (54,05 ± 4,80 and 52,62 ± 3,91). A significant improvement was found in both groups for all outcomes at 6 months and at final follow up. PSM yielded 29 pairs. Patients treated with MOWHTO showed superior TAS scores at 6 months (3,41 ± 0,50 vs 3,10 ± 0,56; p 0,05) and at final follow up (3,83 ± 0,80 vs 3,27 ± 0,59; p 0,005). NRS and LKS were comparable between groups.MOWHTO performed using an open wedge technique, with locking plate and a fast rehabilitation protocol guaranteed higher level of activity than UKA in patients older than 50 years. Difference is significant already at 6 months and last longer than 4 years.III.

During the preparation of the accounts of Artabotrys (Annonaceae) and Magnolia (Magnoliaceae) for the Flora of Singapore, the types of all relevant names were evaluated. New lectotypes are designated for A. suaveolens and M. maingayi and a second-step lectotypification is performed for M. elegans. The citation of a lectotype locality is corrected for A. costatus and the citation of an isolectotype is improved for A. maingayi. We also clarify the previous use of the term ‘type’ to designate specimens that are in fact lectotypes for several names in Magnolia.

Currently in Panama, as in other parts of the world, there is little interest in taxonomy, both at the educational and research levels. In order to increase awareness and research interest in plant taxonomy amongst botany majors, we involved a cohort of college-level students of the University of Panama’s Biology School in the process of naming a yet-to-be described species of Anthurium (Araceae), engaging them in all aspects of taxonomy including the process of proposing a new species to the scientific community. With their help, we hereby describe a new species we named Anthurium oistophyllum, with descriptions and illustrations based upon photographs of the vegetative and reproductive structures taken from live material.

This study compares the miscarriage rate of pregnancies after trans-myometrial eggs retrieval to transvaginal eggs retrieval.In the period between January 2004 and December 2020, 13,323 egg retrievals were carried out. In 699 cases, the ovaries were unreachable. Alternative maneuvers were performed to solve this problem, but despite this, in 132 patients the technique of trans-myometrial sampling had to be used. 26 patients were excluded from the study, because of the inclusion criteria, and therefore two groups of 106 patients were selected, Group A and Group B (control).In the comparison between the two groups, there were no statistically significant differences in abortion rates, pregnancy rates and complications after the technique.This study shows that the abortion rate in trans-myometrial oocyte retrieval does not change when compared to classic retrieval, despite the sampling needle completely crossing the myometrium. Furthermore, the pregnancy rate and the complication rate do not appear to have worsened with this technique.

MDPCT1 is a four-layer cos-theta Nb3Sn dipole demonstrator developed and tested at FNAL in the framework of the U.S. Magnet Development Program. The magnet reached record fields for accelerator magnets of 14.1 T at 4.5 K in the first test and 14.5 T at 1.9 K in the second test and then showed large degradation. While its inner coils performed exceptionally well with only two quenches up to 14.5 T and no evidence of degradation, the outer coils degraded over the course of testing. By adopting new measurement and analysis techniques at FNAL we are discussing in detail what happened. Both success and failure in our diagnostics are discussed. The evolution of techniques over the course of two tests (and three thermal cycles) shows the path to address challenges brought by the first four-layer magnet tested at FNAL. This paper presents the analysis of quench data along with diagnostic features and complementary measurements taken in support of the magnet performance analysis.

The design and experimental demonstration of a 16-channel frequency-domain multiplexing (FDM) read-out for transition-edge sensor bolometers is presented. This MUX electronics is intended to read out the 326 spiderweb bolometers of the LSPE/SWIPE balloon-borne experiment, which aims at the detection of the B mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background at large angular scales. The cryogenic part of our 16-channel FDM read-out chain features LC resonators composed of custom Nb superconducting inductors and surface mount device ceramic capacitors mounted on boards next to the detector wafers, at 300 mK, while the superconducting quantum interference device board is at 1.6 K. The warm section is based on a modular solution, with mezzanine plug-ins for digital-to-analog converters, analog-to-digital converters and a system-on-chip (based on the Altera Cyclone V field programmable gate array). The warm electronics handles the generation of the FDM tones, the de-multiplexing and the digital signal analysis including, e.g. cosmic ray glitches removal. Here, we recall its specifications, we address noise considerations, and finally we present the latest results obtained using flight models of our custom-designed boards.

Bertoloni published Florula guatimalensis in 1840, which is commonly cited as the original publication. However, our findings show that previous publications of Alessandrini of 1838 and 1840 include the original descriptions by Bertoloni which predate Florula guatimalensis. Among the 60 new taxa authored by Bertoloni, 26 were published in 1838 and 34 in 1840 by Alessandrini. Additionally, original drawings were discovered inside an old copy of Bertoloni’s Florula guatimalensis. Also a comparison between the original material from Bertoloni’s herbarium and his original drawings is here reported for the first time. The collection of Guatemalan plants studied by Antonio Bertoloni preserved at BOLO was analysed and is here discussed. The new combinations Odontonema corymbulosum and Lamourouxia barbata are proposed. A neotype for Aristolochia podocarpa and an epitype for Philadelphus myrtoides are here designated.

Vitamin D (VitD) is a secosteroid hormone showing both antiproliferative and immunomodulatory effects. Its involvement in placental steroidogenesis and endometrial decidualization even plays a role in other gynecological functions, including assisted reproductive technology (ART). However, controversial data have been reported on its implication in pregnancy outcomes during In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) programs. In order to elucidate the VitD role in ART success, we evaluated serum and follicular fluid (FF) VitD levels in infertile women concerning the pregnancy rate.In our IVF center, 446 patients, under the age of 42 years old, were evaluated in the period between January 2018 and December 2019. It is here important to clarify that, in order to respect the exclusion criteria, only 103 of them were enrolled for the study concerning the VitD evaluation in serum and follicular fluid at the time of the egg retrieval. This took place both in 34 pregnant patients (Group 1) and 69 non-pregnant ones (Group 2). Furthermore, the collection of these data gave us the opportunity to assess a possible correlation between the VitD levels and the achievement of pregnancy in the performed IVF cycles.The studied group included 103 eligible women. The average age for Group 1 was 33.12 ± 3.72 yrs whereas 33.72+3.99 yrs (p=0.467) for Group 2. The main differences were observed concerning follicle numbers of 17-21 mm (p=0.0043), the number of retrieved oocytes (p=0.0207), as well as the number of mature oocytes (p=0.0233) among the different groups. Different reference ranges, established according to the pregnancy outcomes, revealed that pregnant women with36 yrs showed significantly higher levels of VitD.Increased serum and FF-VitD levels in women undergoing IVF with age ≥36 yrs, were significantly associated with a favorable outcome to achieve and carry on with the pregnancy.

The reconstruction and analysis of palaeoseasonality from speleothem records remains a notoriously challenging task. Although the seasonal cycle is obscured by noise, dating uncertainties and irregular sampling, its extraction can identify regime transitions and enhance the understanding of long-term climate variability. Shifts in seasonal predictability of hydroclimatic conditions have immediate and serious repercussions for agricultural societies.We present a highly resolved speleothem record (ca. 0.22 years temporal resolution with episodes twice as high) of palaeoseasonality from Yok Balum cave in Belize covering the Common Era (400-2006 CE) and demonstrate how seasonal-scale hydrological variability can be extracted from δ13C and δ18O isotope records. We employ a Monte-Carlo based framework in which dating uncertainties are transferred into magnitude uncertainty and propagated. Regional historical proxy data enable us to relate climate variability to agricultural disasters throughout the Little Ice Age and population size variability during the Terminal Classic Maya collapse.Spectral analysis reveals the seasonal cycle as well as nonstationary ENSO- and multi-decadal-scale variability. Variations in both the subannual distribution of rainfall and mean average hydroclimate pose limitations on how reliably farmers can predict crop yield. A characterization of year-to-year predictability as well as the complexity of seasonal patterns unconver shifts in the seasonal-scale variability. These are discussed in the context of their implications for rainfall dependent agricultural societies.

Stalagmites are an extraordinarily powerful resource for the reconstruction of climatological palaeoseasonality. Here, we provide a review of different types of seasonality preserved by stalagmites and methods for extracting this information. A new drip classification scheme is introduced, which facilitates the identification of stalagmites fed by seasonally responsive drips and which highlights the wide variability in drip types feeding stalagmites. This hydrological variability, combined with seasonality in Earth atmospheric processes, meteoric precipitation, biological processes within the soil, and cave atmosphere composition means that every stalagmite retains a different and distinct (but correct) record of environmental conditions. Replication of a record is extremely useful but should not be expected unless comparing stalagmites affected by the same processes in the same proportion. A short overview of common microanalytical techniques is presented, and suggested best practice discussed. In addition to geochemical methods, a new modelling technique for extracting meteoric precipitation and temperature palaeoseasonality from stalagmite δ18O data is discussed and tested with both synthetic and real-world datasets. Finally, world maps of temperature, meteoric precipitation amount, and meteoric precipitation oxygen isotope ratio seasonality are presented and discussed, with an aim of helping to identify regions most sensitive to shifts in seasonality. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

LQXFA/B production series cryogenic assemblies are being built for the LHC upgrade by the HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP). These contain a pair of MQXFA quadrupole magnets combined as a cold mass within a vacuum vessel, and are to be installed in the IR regions of the LHC. The LQXFA/B are being tested at 1.9 K to assess alignment and magnetic performance at Fermilab's horizontal test facility. The ~10 m - long assembly must meet stringent specifications for quadrupole strength and harmonic field integrals determination, magnetic axis location, and for variations in axis position and local field profile. A multi-probe, PCB-based rotating coil and Single Stretched Wire system are employed for these measurements. To accurately determine rotating coil location and angles within the cold mass, a laser tracker is utilized to record multiple targets at one end of the probe. Identification of volcanic signals preserved in paleoenvironmental records can provide key insights into the timing and consequences of explosive volcanism. Yet the eruption record is incomplete and this confounds our ability to link volcanic eruptions to their impacts on climate and environments. Studies have suggested that stalagmite records can help to address these gaps, through the identification of transient geochemical variability associated with incorporation of elements derived from erupted material. However, the utility of stalagmites for tracing volcanism is poorly constrained globally. Here, we present a high-resolution geochemical dataset for stalagmite NIED08–05 from Niedźwiedzia Cave (Poland). We do this with two primary aims: (1) to test the suitability of NIED08–05 as a record of volcanism since 3 ka BP, and (2) to ascertain whether stalagmites grown in temperate regions preserve volcanic signals with success comparable to those grown in tropical regions. We find transient enrichments of 16 trace elements and the rare-earth-elements Y, La, Nd, which coincide with the timing of some known eruption events. Using Principal Component Analysis (PCA) we find that elements atypically incorporated into calcite (e.g., Fe) co-vary. Similarly, filtering PC1 (17% of the dataset variability) for high magnitude deviations from a baseline signal yields tentative agreement between PC scores and some known large eruptions with tephra found in Poland. We use our analysis to discuss the complexities involved in associating volcanic signals with stalagmite chemistry in temperate regions far from the source of large eruptions. The transport pathway from volcanic source to stalagmite growth surfaces includes the complex Niedźwiedzia Cave hydrological system and is influenced by dense forest above the cave site. Together these factors increase the potential for attenuation of volcanic-derived chemical signals prior to reaching the stalagmite, and so make it difficult to unambiguously link trace element enrichments in NIED08–05 to volcanic eruptions. Our results provide strong evidence that in a temperate depositional environment far from active volcanoes, climate and hydrology conspire to mute the strength of volcanic geochemical signals. Therefore, this work provides important incentives for future research in this area by highlighting that stalagmites grown in a comparatively simple hydrological regime and grown in caves overlain by thin vegetation and soil cover , may preserve volcanic signatures with greater success than those grown in temperate environments.

Hind, is described from two herbarium specimens housed at FT, collected in 1954 near the Indian Ocean coast of Bari Region, NE Somalia. These specimens formed an unidentified remaining part of a collection given to FT by the Italian geologists G. Merla, A. Azzaroli and V. Fois, who had led a geologic expedition in the former Migiurtinia (current Bari Region) on behalf of an Italian oil company. The new species Pseudoblepharispermum tuddense Baldesi & Pignotti is more similar to Pseudoblepharispermum bremeri from S Ethiopia than to Pseudoblepharispermum mudugense from central Somalia. Close examinations of macro- and micro-characters were carried out for the new species and compared with the features of Pseudoblepharispermum bremeri. Antecedentes y Objetivos: Araceae es una familia de plantas herbáceas ampliamente distribuida en el mundo, es notable por su sorprendente diversidad morfológica y su vasta variedad de hábitats. La familia comprende ocho subfamilias, 143 géneros y 3667 especies. La región centroamericana posee alrededor de 780 especies, de las cuales 262 se encuentran en Costa Rica. En esta contribución, incluimos cuatro nuevos registros de aráceas para la flora de Costa Rica, pertenecientes a los géneros Anthurium, Philodendron y Spathiphyllum. Adicionalmente, se discuten aspectos nomenclaturales de A. myosuroides. Métodos: Los nuevos registros se realizaron mediante trabajo de campo en Fila Anguciana, Cerros Turrubares y Volcán Miravalles. La correcta identidad taxonómica de las especies se confirmó mediante la revisión de literatura y por comparación con especímenes de herbario, especialmente los ejemplares tipo provistos por los herbarios de la Universidad de Panamá (PMA) y el Jardín Botánico de Missouri (MO). También se consultó, en línea, la base de datos de JSTOR Global Plants y la colección del Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle de París (P). Se proporcionan descripciones, discusiones taxonómicas e ilustraciones de las características morfológicas de los nuevos registros. Resultados clave: Se presentan Anthurium roseospadix, A. myosuroides, Philodendron pseudauriculatum y Spathiphyllum dressleri como nuevos registros para la flora de Costa Rica. Además, se propone una lectotipificación para Pothos myosuroides. Conclusiones: Considerando los nuevos registros presentados en este trabajo, la flora de aráceas de Costa Rica ahora comprende 266 especies, donde la diversidad de Anthurium, Philodendron y Spathiphyllum aumentó a 94, 63 y 10 especies, respectivamente.
