Abstract

The ALEPH detector at LEP has been used to measure the momentum spectrum and charge ratio of vertical cosmic ray muons underground. The sea-level cosmic ray muon spectrum for momenta up to 2.5 TeV/c has been obtained by correcting for the overburden of 320 meter water equivalent (mwe). The results are compared with Monte Carlo models for air shower development in the atmosphere. From the analysis of the spectrum the total flux and the spectral index of the cosmic ray primaries is inferred. The charge ratio suggests a dominantly light composition of cosmic ray primaries with energies up to 10^15 eV., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Abstract

The paper presents a comparative analysis of various schemes of thermionic electrogenerating assemblies (EGAs) that convert the heat of a nuclear reactor into electricity. Multielement single-channel EGAs, combining advantages of a single-element and a garland multielement EGA, are quite promising. The problem of high-temperature insulation of emitters in the construction of this EGA is solved by implementing a special technology to form a multilayer metal-ceramic composition, which is confirmed by the test results. We consider a number of different options for the possible use of this EGA design, depending on the emerging problems, emitter temperatures, and the output electrical power levels.

Abstract

The final oscillation analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. Reconstruction algorithms of data extracted by electronic detectors were improved and the data recorded in the emulsion target were analysed by new automated scanning systems, allowing the use of a new method for event reconstruction in emulsion. CHORUS has applied these new techniques to the sample of 1996-1997 events for which no muons were observed in the electronic detectors. Combining the new sample with the data analysed in previous papers, the overall sensitivity of the experiment to the ?? appearance is thus improved. In a two-neutrino mixing scheme, a 90% C.L. upper limit of sin2 2 ?µ ? < 4.4 × 10-4 is set for large ? m2, improving by a factor 1.5 the previously published CHORUS result. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

CosmoALEPH is an experiment operated in conjunction with the ALEPH detector. The ALEPH experiment took data from 1989 until the year 2000 at the Large Electron Positron Collider (LEP) at CERN. It provides, among others, high resolution tracking and calorimetry. CosmoALEPH used this e + e − detector for cosmic ray studies. In addition, six scintillator telescopes were installed in the ALEPH pit and the LEP tunnel. The whole experiment operated underground at a vertical depth of 320 meter water equivalent. Data from ALEPH and the scintillator telescopes provide informaton on the lateral distribution of energetic cosmic ray muons in extensive air showers. The decoherence curve of these remnant air shower muons is sensitive to the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays and to the interaction characteristics of energetic hadrons in the atmosphere. An attempt is made to extract the various interdependencies in describing the propagation of primary and secondary cosmic rays through the atmosphere and the rock overburden, and comparing the data with results from Monte Carlo (MC) calculations. Results on the multiplicity distributions of remnant air shower muons in ALEPH are also compared with expectations based on MC simulations. Data on the cosmic ray muon spectrum and charge ratio up to momenta of 3 TeV/c as obtained with the time projection chamber in ALEPH's strong magnetic field are presented. The large number of events also allowed to unambiguously observe muon tridents and to estimate the cross section for this process.

Abstract

The WA95/CHORUS experiment at CERN is a dedicated nu(mu)-nu(tau) oscillation search experiment. Using the wide band neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS accelerator, with an exposure of 2.4 X 10(19) protons on the target, this experiment will explore the domain of small mixing angles down to sin(2) 2 theta(mu tau) approximate to 3 X 10(-4) for mass differences Delta m(2) > 1 eV(2), more than one order of magnitude better than the current limits. The conceptual design of the CHORUS experiment and data on the detector performances are reported.

The ATLAS Data Acquisition / Event Filter Prototype '-1' (DAQ/EF-1) project provides the opportunity to explore the use of commodity hardware (PCs) and Open Source Software (Linux) in DAQ applications. In DAQ/EF-1 there is an element called the LDAQ which is responsible for providing local run-control, error-handling and reporting for a number of Read-Out modules in Front End crates. This element is also responsible for providing event data for monitoring and for the interface with the global control and monitoring system (Back-End). We present the results of an evaluation of the Linux operating system made in the context of DAQ/EF-1 where there are no strong real-time requirements. We also report on our experience in implementing the LDAQ on a VMEbus based PC (the VMIVME-7587) and a desktop PC linked to VMEbus with a Bit3 interface both running Linux. We then present the problems encountered during the integration with VMEbus, the status of the LDAQ implementation and draw some conclusions on the use of Linux in DAQ applications.

Abstract

The ALEPH detector at LEP has been supplemented with five scintillator telescopes to measure the muon component of cosmic ray air showers underground. The emphasis of the present analysis of a new data set is to measure coincidences over distances up to about 1 km which are sensitive to the forward production of hadronic interactions and the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range around 1015 eV. First results indicate that the observed decoherence curve of muons is compatible with a light primary composition and the arrival directions of muons show no obvious clustering in galactic coordinates.

Abstract

Test-beam studies of the ATLAS Transition Radiation Tracker (TRT) straw tube performance in terms of electron–pion separation using a time-over-threshold method are described. The test-beam data are compared with Monte Carlo simulations of charged particles passing through the straw tubes of the TRT. For energies below 10 GeV , the time-over-threshold method combined with the standard transition-radiation cluster-counting technique significantly improves the electron–pion separation in the TRT. The use of the time-over-threshold information also provides some kaon–pion separation, thereby significantly enhancing the B-physics capabilities of the ATLAS detector.

Abstract

Fibre Channel equipment has been evaluated in the environment of the ATLAS DAQ prototype “−1”. Fibre Channel PCI and PMC cards have been tested on PowerPC-based VME processor boards running LynxOS and on Pentium-based personal computers running Windows NT. The performance in terms of overhead and bandwidth has been measured in point-to-point, arbitrated loop and fabric configuration with a Fibre Channel switch. The possible use of the equipment for event building in the ATLAS DAQ prototype “−1” has been studied.

Abstract

Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for ντ charged current interactions followed by the τ lepton decay into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for νμ→ντ oscillation. A sample of 6844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the selection criteria, no τ− candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search for ντ interactions using the muonic decay mode (36 182 events with an identified muon), a 90% C.L. limit on the mixing angle sin22θμτ

Abstract

The ALEPH experiment at the LEP e+e− storage ring at CERN has been used to measure the momentum spectrum of cosmic ray muons. ALEPH is located at a vertical depth of 320 m.w.e. underground close to the Jura mountains. The high resolution of the time projection chamber (TPC) of ALEPH allows to reconstruct muon tracks with momenta up to the TeV region. The measured muon momentum spectrum and the charge ratio in the range from 80 to 2500 GeV are presented. After corrections for energy loss in the overburden the sea level muon spectrum at nearly vertical incidence is obtained. The experimental data are compared to theoretical expectations and results from other experiments.

Abstract

A method has been developed for performing extrareactor preloop tests of multielement PGCs by the reverse-current method. An experimental stand equipped with electronic apparatus was developed. Extra reactor tests of single- and multi-element thermionic converters and PGCs with a thermal power of 1–3 kW and cesium vapor pressure of 3–5 hPa were performed. The preloop tests of multielement PGCs by the reverse-current method on thermal stands make it possible to diagnose the quality of a part efficiently at minimum cost.

Abstract

A first analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. The search for nu (tau) charged current events has been performed for both leptonic and hadronic decays of the tau lepton. No tau candidate has been found, A nu (tau) --> nu (tau) mixing is excluded down to sin(2)2 theta (mu tau) = 6.8 x 10(-4) for large Deltam(2) (90% C.L.). (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

A decommissioned LHC test magnet is being prepared as the CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) experiment. The magnet has a field of 9.6 Tesla and length of 10 meters. It is being mounted on a platform to track the sun over ±8° vertically and ±45°, horizontally. A sensitivity in axion-photon coupling gαγγ < 5 × 10−11GeV−1 can be reached for mα ≤ 10−2eV, and with a gas filled tube-can reach gαγγ ≤ 10−10GeV−1 for axion masses mα < 2eV.

Abstract

CHORUS is an experiment searching for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation in the CERN wide band neutrino beam with a hybrid setup consisting of a nuclear emulsion target followed by electronic detectors. The experiment has been taking data from 1994 through 1997. A subset of the neutrino interactions collected in 1994 and 1995 have been analyzed, looking for nu(tau) charged current interactions where the tau lepton decays to mu(mu)nu(tau). In a sample of 31,423 nu(mu) charged current interactions, no nu(tau) candidates were found. For large Delta m(mu tau)(2) values, a limit on the mixing angle of sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 3.5 x 10(-3) at 90% C.L. can be set, thus improving the previous best result. Abstract

Part of the neutrino events collected in 1994-1995 by the CHORUS experiment has been analysed. A search was performed for nu(tau) charged current interactions followed by the tau lepton decay into a single charged negative hadron, a possible indication for nu(mu) --> nu(tau) oscillation. A sample of 6844 events without an identified muon has been located in the emulsion target. Within the selection criteria, no tau(-) candidate has been found. Combining this result with the one from the search fur nu(tau) interactions using the muonic decay mode (36182 events with an identified muon), a 90% C.L. limit on the mixing angle sin(2)2 theta(mu tau) < 1.8.10(-3) (at large Delta m(2)) has been derived. Abstract

A new experimental apparatus, designed principally for a high sensitivity search for nu( --> mu(tau) oscillation, has been successfully constructed and made operational by the CHORUS Collaboration for the CERN-WA95 experiment. It consists of a large emulsion target, a scintillating fiber tracker system with optoelectronics read-out, an air-core magnet, a set of trigger hodoscopes, a calorimeter based on the lead/scintillating-fiber technique, and a muon spectrometer. The design, construction and performance of the entire apparatus and of the different detectors are described.

The Chorus experiment, which aims at a search for v(mu) --> v(tau) oscillations using the neutrino beam of the CERN-SPS, has successfully taken data in 1994 and 1995. The detection technique will be discussed and the performances of the apparatus as well as a status report will be given.

Abstract

Data from a dedicated cosmic ray run of the ALEPH detector were used in a study of muon trident production, i.e., muon pairs produced by muons. Here the overburden and the calorimeters are the target materials while the ALEPH time projection chamber provides the momentum measurements. A theoretical estimate of the muon trident cross section is obtained by developing a Monte Carlo simulation for muon propagation in the overburden and the detector. Two muon trident candidates were found to match the expected theoretical pattern. The observed production rate implies that the nuclear form factor cannot be neglected for muon tridents.

Abstract

The ALEPH-experiment at the LEP e+e- storage ring at CERN has been used to measure the momentum spectrum of cosmic ray muons. ALEPH is located at a vertical depth of 320 m.w.e. underground close to the Jura mountains. The time projection chamber (TPC) of ALEPH with its excellent spatial resolution allows to reconstruct tracks of single and multiple muons with high accuracy. A strong magnetic field of 1.5 Tesla provides the basis of the momentum measurement. About 1.4 Million triggers with single and multiple muon events have been analysed. The obtained muon momentum spectrum and the charge ratio in the range from 80 to 2500 GeV/c is presented. After corrections for energy loss in the overburden the muon spectrum at surface is obtained. The results are compared to results from other experiments.

Abstract

The ALEPH detector at LEP has been supplemented with five scintillator stations to measure the muon component of cosmic ray showers underground. We report the measurements of coincidences over distances up to about 1 km which are sensitive to the forward production of hadronic interactions and the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays in the energy range around 10{sup 15} eV. The results are compared to the expectations obtained from Monte Carlo simulation. Our results indicate that the observed decoherence curve of muons is compatible with a light primary composition. In addition, the arrival times of muons underground as measured with scintillator stations allow to reconstruct the muon arrival directions in 3-fold coincidence events. These results are compared to shower simulations.

Abstract

The potential for measuring the $W^\prime$WZ coupling with the ATLAS detector at LHC is investigated in this note. Different decay channels are considered and the corresponding discovery limits are estimated. It is shown that, for an integrated luminosity of $300~fb^{-1}$, the $W^\prime~\to~WZ$ channel allows observation of a $W^\prime$ boson with sequential model couplings up to masses of 2.5 TeV.

Abstract

A first analysis of the complete set of data collected by CHORUS in the years 1994-1997 is presented. The search for $\nut$ charged current events has been performed for both leptonic and hadronic decays of the $\tauu$ lepton. No $\tauu$ candidate has been found. A $\numtonut$ mixing is excluded down to $\sin2t$ = $6.8 \times 10^{-4}$ for large $\dm2$ (90\%~C.L.).

Abstract

The ALEPH detector at LEP has been supplemented with five scintillator telescopes. This CosmoALEPH experiment is operating at a depth of 320 m.w.e. under ground measuring the muon component of extensive air showers. The aim of the experiment is to look for the chemical composition of primary cosmic rays and to in vestigate the interaction characteristics of energetic protons and nuclei in the atmosphere in the PeV region. A first look at the cosmic ray data taken in dedicated runs with the CosmoALEPH experiment shows agreement of under ground muon data with gross features based on expectations from the muon content of extensive air showers in the atmosphere.
