Shock-generated transients, such as hot flow anomalies (HFAs), upstream of planetary bow shocks, play a critical role in electron acceleration. Using multi-mission data from NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) and ESA's Cluster missions, we demonstrate the transmission of HFAs through Earth's quasi-parallel bow shock, associated with acceleration of electrons up to relativistic energies. Energetic electrons, initially accelerated upstream, are shown to remain broadly confined within the transmitted transient structures downstream, where betatron acceleration further boosts their energy due to elevated compression levels. Additionally, high-speed jets form at the compressive edges of HFAs, exhibiting a significant increase in dynamic pressure and potentially contributing to driving further localized compression. Our findings emphasize the efficiency of quasi-parallel shocks in driving particle acceleration far beyond the immediate shock transition region, expanding the acceleration region to a larger spatial domain. Finally, this study underscores the importance of multi-scale observational approach in understanding the convoluted processes behind collisionless shock physics and their broader implications.

Ultra-Low Frequency (ULF) waves are critical drivers of particle acceleration and loss in the Earth's magnetosphere. While statistical models of ULF-induced radial transport have traditionally assumed that the waves are uniformly distributed across magnetic local time (MLT), decades of observational evidence show significant MLT localization of ULF waves in the Earth's magnetosphere. This study presents, for the first time, a quasi-linear radial diffusion coefficient accounting for localized ULF waves. We demonstrate that even though quasi-linear radial diffusion is averaged over drift orbits, MLT localization significantly alters the efficiency of particle transport. Our results reveal that when ULF waves cover more than 30\% of the MLT, the radial diffusion efficiency is comparable to that of uniform wave distributions. However, when ULF waves are confined within 10\% of the drift orbit, the diffusion coefficient is enhanced by 10 to 25\%, indicating that narrowly localized ULF waves are efficient drivers of radial transport., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figures. Super-Alfv\'enic jets, with kinetic energy densities significantly exceeding that of the solar wind, are commonly generated downstream of Earth's bow shock under both high and low beta plasma conditions. In this study, we present theoretical evidence that these enhanced kinetic energy flows are driven by firehose-unstable fluctuations and compressive heating within collisionless plasma environments. Using a fluid formalism that incorporates pressure anisotropy, we estimate that the downstream flow of a collisionless plasma shock can be accelerated by a factor of 2 to 4 following the compression and saturation of firehose instability. By analyzing quasi-parallel magnetosheath jets observed in situ by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission, we find that approximately 11\% of plasma measurements within these jets exhibit firehose-unstable fluctuations. Our findings offer an explanation for the distinctive generation of fast downstream flows in both low ($\beta<1$) and high ($\beta>1$) beta plasmas, and provide new evidence that kinetic processes are crucial for accurately describing the formation and evolution of magnetosheath jets., Comment: 12 pages, under review; comments welcome

In this work, we perform a statistical study of magnetic field fluctuations in the solar wind at 1 au using permutation entropy and complexity analysis, and the investigation of the temporal variations of the Hurst exponents. Slow and fast wind, magnetic clouds, interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME)-driven sheath regions and slow-fast stream interaction regions (SIRs) have been investigated separately. Our key finding is that there are significant differences in permutation entropy and complexity values between the solar wind types at larger timescales and little difference at small timescales. Differences become more distinct with increasing timescale, suggesting that smaller-scale turbulent features are more universal. At larger timescales, the analysis method can be used to identify localized spatial structures. We found that except in magnetic clouds, fluctuation are largely anti-persistent and that the Hurst exponents, in particular in compressive structures (sheaths and SIRs) exhibit a clear locality. Our results shows that, in all cases apart from magnetic clouds at largest scales, solar wind fluctuations are stochastic with the fast wind having the highest entropies and low complexities. Magnetic clouds in turn exhibit the lowest entropy and highest complexity, consistent with them being coherent structures in which the magnetic field components vary in an ordered manner. SIRs, slow wind and ICME sheaths are intermediate to magnetic clouds and fast wind, reflecting the increasingly ordered structure. Observational studies of the Earth's radiation belts indicate that Alfv\'enic fluctuations in the frequency range of 2-25 mHz accelerate magnetically trapped electrons to relativistic energies. For decades, statistical models of the Earth's radiation belts have quantified the impact of Alfv\'enic waves in terms of quasi-linear diffusive models. However, quasi-linear models are inadequate to quantify Alfv\'enic radial transport occurring on timescales comparable to the azimuthal drift period of $0.1- 10$ MeV electrons. With recent advances in observational methodologies offering spatial and temporal coverage of the Earth's radiation belts on fast timescales, a theoretical framework that distinguishes between fast and diffusive radial transport can also be tested for the first time with in situ measurements. In this report, we present a drift kinetic description of radial transport for planetary radiation belts. We characterize linear processes that are too fast to be modelled by quasi-linear models and determine the conditions under which nonlinearities become dynamically significant. In the linear regime, wave-particle interactions are categorized in terms of resonant and non-resonant responses. We demonstrate that the phenomenon of zebra stripes is non-resonant and can originate from the injection of particles in the inner radiation belts. We derive a radial diffusion coefficient for a field model that satisfies Faraday's law and that contains two terms: one scaling as $L^{10}$ independent of the azimuthal number $m$, and a second one scaling as $m^2 L^6$. In the nonlinear regime, we show that azimuthally symmetric waves with properties consistent with in situ measurements can energize 10-100 keV electrons in less than a drift period. This coherent process provides new evidence that acceleration by Alfv\'enic waves in radiation belts cannot be fully contained within diffusive models., Comment: 54 pages and 14 figures

We have investigated how the degree of imbalance in solar wind turbulence is modified by large-scale velocity shears in the solar wind plasma. The balance between counterpropagating Alfv\'enic fluctuations, which interact nonlinearly to generate the turbulence, has been quantified by the cross helicity and Elsasser ratio. Velocity shears at a 30-min timescale were identified, with the shear amplitude defined in terms of the linear Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability threshold. The shears were associated with 74 interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) sheaths observed by the Wind spacecraft at 1 au between 1997 and 2018. Typically weaker shears upstream of the sheaths and downstream in the ICME ejecta were also analyzed. In shears below the KH threshold, imbalance was approximately invariant or weakly rising with shear amplitude. Above the KH threshold, fluctuations tended toward a balanced state with increasing shear amplitude. Magnetic compressibility was also found to increase above the KH threshold. These findings are consistent with velocity shears being local sources of sunward fluctuations that act to reduce net imbalances in the antisunward direction, and suggest that the KH instability plays a role in this process., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters 2023 March 2

Interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) contain magnetic field and velocity fluctuations across a wide range of scales. These fluctuations may be interpreted as Alfv\'enic wave packets propagating parallel or anti-parallel to the background magnetic field, with the difference in power between counter-propagating fluxes quantified by the cross helicity. We have determined the cross helicity of inertial range fluctuations at $10^{-3}-10^{-2}$ Hz in 226 ICME flux ropes and 176 ICME sheaths observed by the Wind spacecraft at 1 au during 1995-2015. The flux ropes and sheaths had mean, normalised cross helicities of 0.18 and 0.24, respectively, with positive values here indicating net anti-sunward fluxes. While still tipped towards the anti-sunward direction on average, fluxes in ICMEs tend to be more balanced than in the solar wind at 1 au, where the mean cross helicity is larger. Superposed epoch profiles show cross helicity falling sharply in the sheath and reaching a minimum inside the flux rope near the leading edge. More imbalanced, solar wind-like cross helicity was found towards the trailing edge and laterally further from the rope axis. The dependence of cross helicity on flux rope orientation and the presence of an upstream shock are considered. Potential origins of the low cross helicity in ICMEs at 1 au include balanced driving of the closed-loop flux rope at the Sun and ICME-solar wind interactions in interplanetary space. Sheaths ahead of interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) are turbulent heliospheric structures. Knowledge of their structure and fluctuations is important for understanding their geoeffectiveness, their role in accelerating particles, and the interaction of ICMEs with the solar wind. We studied observations from the Parker Solar Probe of a sheath observed at 0.5 au in March 2019, ahead of a slow streamer blowout CME. To examine the MHD-scale turbulent properties, we calculated fluctuation amplitudes, magnetic compressibility, partial variance of increments (PVI), cross helicity ($\sigma_c$), residual energy ($\sigma_r$), and the Jensen-Shannon permutation entropy and complexity. The sheath consisted of slow and fast flows separated by a 15-min change in magnetic sector that coincided with current sheet crossings and a velocity shear zone. Fluctuation amplitudes and PVI were greater through the sheath than upstream. Fluctuations had mostly negative $\sigma_r$ and positive $\sigma_c$ in the sheath, the latter indicating an anti-sunward sense of propagation. The velocity shear region marked an increase in temperature and specific entropy, and the faster flow behind had local patches of positive $\sigma_r$ as well as higher fluctuation amplitudes and PVI. Fluctuations in the preceding wind and sheath were stochastic, with the sheath fluctuations showing lower entropy and higher complexity than upstream. The two-part sheath structure likely resulted from a warp in the heliospheric current sheet (HCS) being swept up and compressed. The ejecta accelerated and heated the wind at the sheath rear, which then interacted with the slower wind ahead of the HCS warp. This caused differences in fluctuation properties across the sheath. Magnetic clouds are large-scale transient structures in the solar wind with low plasma $\beta$, low-amplitude magnetic field fluctuations, and twisted field lines with both ends often connected to the Sun. Their inertial-range turbulent properties have not been examined in detail. In this Letter, we analyze the normalized cross helicity, $\sigma_c$, and residual energy, $\sigma_r$, of plasma fluctuations in the November 2018 magnetic cloud observed at 0.25 au by the Parker Solar Probe. A low value of $|\sigma_c|$ was present in the cloud core, indicating that wave power parallel and anti-parallel to the mean field was approximately balanced, while the cloud's outer layers displayed larger amplitude Alfv\'enic fluctuations with high $|\sigma_c|$ values and $\sigma_r\sim0$. These properties are discussed in terms of the cloud's solar connectivity and local interaction with the solar wind. We suggest that low $|\sigma_c|$ is likely a common feature of magnetic clouds given their typically closed field structure. Upstream of shocks, the foreshock is filled with hot ions. When these ions are concentrated and thermalized around a discontinuity, a diamagnetic cavity bounded by compressional boundaries, referred to as a foreshock transient, forms. Sometimes, the upstream compressional boundary can further steepen into a secondary shock, which has been observed to accelerate particles and contribute to the primary shock acceleration. However, secondary shock formation conditions and processes are not fully understood. Using particle-in-cell simulations, we reveal how secondary shocks are formed. From 1D simulations, we show that electric fields play a critical role in shaping the shock's magnetic field structure, as well as in coupling the energy of hot ions to that of the shock. We demonstrate that larger thermal speed and concentration ratio of hot ions favors the formation of a secondary shock. From a more realistic 2D simulation, we examine how a discontinuity interacts with foreshock ions leading to the formation of a foreshock transient and a secondary shock. Our results imply that secondary shocks are more likely to occur at primary shocks with higher Mach number. With the secondary shock's previously proven ability to accelerate particles in cooperation with a planetary bow shock, it is even more appealing to consider them in particle acceleration of high Mach number astrophysical shocks., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The sheaths of compressed solar wind that precede interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) commonly display large-amplitude magnetic field fluctuations. As ICMEs propagate radially from the Sun, the properties of these fluctuations may evolve significantly. We have analyzed magnetic field fluctuations in an ICME sheath observed by MESSENGER at 0.47 au and subsequently by STEREO-B at 1.08 au while the spacecraft were close to radial alignment. Radial changes in fluctuation amplitude, compressibility, inertial-range spectral slope, permutation entropy, Jensen-Shannon complexity, and planar structuring are characterized. These changes are discussed in relation to the evolving turbulent properties of the upstream solar wind, the shock bounding the front of the sheath changing from a quasi-parallel to quasi-perpendicular geometry, and the development of complex structures in the sheath plasma., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Analysis of model fit results of 15,210 electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs), observed within $\pm$2 hours of 52 interplanetary (IP) shocks by the Wind spacecraft near 1 AU, is presented as the third and final part on electron VDFs near IP shocks. The core electrons and protons dominate in the magnitude and change in the partial-to-total thermal pressure ratio, with the core electrons often gaining as much or more than the protons. Only a moderate positive correlation is observed between the electron temperature and the kinetic energy change across the shock, while weaker, if any, correlations were found with any other macroscopic shock parameter. No VDF parameter correlated with the shock normal angle. The electron VDF evolves from a narrowly peaked core with flaring suprathermal tails in the upstream to either a slightly hotter core with steeper tails or much hotter flattop core with even steeper tails downstream of the weaker and strongest shocks, respectively. Both quasi-static and fluctuating fields are examined as possible mechanisms modifying the VDF but neither is sufficient alone. For instance, flattop VDFs can be generated by nonlinear ion acoustic wave stochastic acceleration (i.e., inelastic collisions) while other work suggested they result from the combination of quasi-static and fluctuating fields. A statistical analysis of 15,210 electron velocity distribution function (VDF) fits, observed within $\pm$2 hours of 52 interplanetary (IP) shocks by the $Wind$ spacecraft near 1 AU, is presented. This is the second in a three-part series on electron VDFs near IP shocks. The electron velocity moment statistics for the dense, low energy core, tenuous, hot halo, and field-aligned beam/strahl are a statistically significant list of values illustrated with both histograms and tabular lists for reference and baselines in future work. The beam/strahl fit results in the upstream are currently the closest thing to a proper parameterization of the beam/strahl electron velocity moments in the ambient solar wind. This work will also serve as a 1 AU baseline and reference for missions like $Parker \ Solar \ Probe$ and $Solar \ Orbiter$. The median density, temperature, beta, and temperature anisotropy values for the core(halo)[beam/strahl] components, with subscripts $ec$($eh$)[$eb$], of all fit results respectively are $n{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b]}}$ $\sim$ 11.3(0.36)[0.17] $cm^{-3}$, $T{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b], tot}}$ $\sim$ 14.6(48.4)[40.2] $eV$, $\beta{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b], tot}}$ $\sim$ 0.93(0.11)[0.05], and $\mathcal{A}{\scriptstyle_{ec(h)[b]}}$ $\sim$ 0.98(1.03)[0.93]. Today, the near-Earth space is facing a paradigm change as the number of new spacecraft is literally sky-rocketing. Increasing numbers of small satellites threaten the sustainable use of space, as without removal, space debris will eventually make certain critical orbits unusable. A central factor affecting small spacecraft health and leading to debris is the radiation environment, which is unpredictable due to an incomplete understanding of the near-Earth radiation environment itself and its variability driven by the solar wind and outer magnetosphere. This paper presents the FORESAIL-1 nanosatellite mission, having two scientific and one technological objectives. The first scientific objective is to measure the energy and flux of energetic particle loss to the atmosphere with a representative energy and pitch angle resolution over a wide range of magnetic local times. To pave the way to novel model - in situ data comparisons, we also show preliminary results on precipitating electron fluxes obtained with the new global hybrid-Vlasov simulation Vlasiator. The second scientific objective of the FORESAIL-1 mission is to measure energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) of solar origin. The solar ENA flux has the potential to contribute importantly to the knowledge of solar eruption energy budget estimations. The technological objective is to demonstrate a satellite de-orbiting technology, and for the first time, make an orbit manoeuvre with a propellantless nanosatellite. Analysis of 15314 electron velocity distribution functions (VDFs) within $\pm$2 hours of 52 interplanetary (IP) shocks observed by the \emph{Wind} spacecraft near 1 AU are introduced. The electron VDFs are fit to the sum of three model functions for the cold dense core, hot tenuous halo, and field-aligned beam/strahl component. The best results were found by modeling the core as either a bi-kappa or a symmetric (or asymmetric) bi-self-similar velocity distribution function, while both the halo and beam/strahl components were best fit to bi-kappa velocity distribution function. This is the first statistical study to show that the core electron distribution is better fit to a self-similar velocity distribution function than a bi-Maxwellian under all conditions. The self-similar distribution deviation from a Maxwellian is a measure of inelasticity in particle scattering from waves and/or turbulence. The range of values defined by the lower and upper quartiles for the kappa exponents are $\kappa{\scriptstyle_{ec}}$ $\sim$ 5.40--10.2 for the core, $\kappa{\scriptstyle_{eh}}$ $\sim$ 3.58--5.34 for the halo, and $\kappa{\scriptstyle_{eb}}$ $\sim$ 3.40--5.16 for the beam/strahl. The lower-to-upper quartile range of symmetric bi-self-similar core exponents are $s{\scriptstyle_{ec}}$ $\sim$ 2.00--2.04, and asymmetric bi-self-similar core exponents are $p{\scriptstyle_{ec}}$ $\sim$ 2.20--4.00 for the parallel exponent, and $q{\scriptstyle_{ec}}$ $\sim$ 2.00--2.46 for the perpendicular exponent. The discovery of long-lived electrostatic coherent structures with large-amplitude electric fields ($1 \leq E \leq 500 $ mV/m) by the Van Allen Probes has revealed alternative routes through which planetary radiation belts' acceleration can take place. Following previous reports showing that small phase-space holes, with $q\phi /T^c_e\simeq 10^{-2}-10^{-3}$, could result from electron interaction with large-amplitude whistlers, we demonstrate one possible mechanism through which holes can grow nonlinearly (i.e. $\gamma \propto \sqrt{\phi}$) and subcritically as a result of momentum exchange between hot and cold electron populations. Our results provide an explanation for the common occurrence and fast growth of large-amplitude electron phase-space holes in the Earth's radiation belts., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

Foreshock disturbances -- large-scale (~1000 km to >30,000 km), transient (~5-10 per day - lasting ~10s of seconds to several minutes) structures [1,2] - generated by suprathermal (>100 eV to 100s of keV) ions [3,4] arise upstream of Earth's bow shock formed by the solar wind colliding with the Earth's magnetosphere. They have recently been found to accelerate ions to energies of several keV [5,6]. Although electrons in Saturn's high Mach number (M > 40) bow shock can be accelerated to relativistic energies (nearly 1000 keV) [7], it has hitherto been thought impossible to accelerate electrons at the much weaker (M < 20) Earth's bow shock beyond a few 10s of keV [8]. Here we report observations of electrons energized by foreshock disturbances to energies up to at least ~300 keV. Although such energetic electrons have been previously reported, their presence has been attributed to escaping magnetospheric particles [9,10] or solar events [11]. These relativistic electrons are not associated with any solar activity nor are they of magnetospheric origin. Further, current theories of ion acceleration in foreshock disturbances cannot account for electrons accelerated to the observed relativistic energies [12-17]. Here we present a commentary on the role of small-scale (e.g., few tens of meters) wave-particle interactions in large-scale (e.g., few tens of kilometers) processes and their capacity to accelerate particles from thermal to suprathermal or even to cosmic-ray energies. The purpose of this commentary is to provoke thought and further investigation into the relative importance of electromagnetic waves in the global dynamics of many macroscopic systems. Recent theoretical studies of the nonlinear wave-particle interactions for relativistic particles have shown that Landau resonant orbits could be efficiently accelerated along the mean background magnetic field for propagation angles $\theta$ in close proximity to a critical propagation $\theta_\textrm{c}$ associated with a Hopf--Hopf bifurcation condition. In this report, we extend previous studies to reach greater modeling capacities for the study of electrons in radiation belts by including longitudinal wave effects and inhomogeneous magnetic fields. We find that even though both effects can limit the surfatron acceleration of electrons in radiation belts, gains in energy of the order of 100 keV, taking place on the order of ten milliseconds, are sufficiently strong for the mechanism to be relevant to radiation belt dynamics., Comment: Published in Nonlinear Processes of Geophysics but available in here without some random typos introduced by publisher

In this report, we present a dynamical systems' approach to study the exact nonlinear wave-particle interaction in relativistic regime. We give a particular attention to the effect of wave obliquity on the dynamics of the orbits by studying the specific cases of parallel ($\theta=0$) and perpendicular ($\theta=-\pi/2$) propagations in comparison to the general case of oblique propagation $\theta=]-\pi/2, 0[$. We found that the fixed points of the system correspond to Landau resonance, and that the dynamics can evolve from trapping to surfatron acceleration for propagation angles obeying a Hopf bifurcations condition. Cyclotron-resonant particles are also studied by the construction of a pseudo-potential structure in the Lorentz factor $\gamma$. We derived a condition for which Arnold diffusion results in relativistic stochastic acceleration. Hence, two general conclusions are drawn : 1) The propagation angle $\theta$ can significantly alter the dynamics of the orbits at both Landau and cyclotron-resonances. 2) Considering the short-time scales upon which the particles are accelerated, these two mechanisms for Landau and cyclotron resonant orbits could become potential candidates for problems of particle energization in weakly collisional space and cosmic plasmas., Comment: 36 pages, 9 figures

In a recent work, Nazer and Gastpar proposed the Compute-and-Forward strategy as a physical-layer network coding scheme. They described a code structure based on nested lattices whose algebraic structure makes the scheme reliable and efficient. In this work, we consider the implementation of their scheme for real Gaussian channels and one dimensional lattices. We relate the maximization of the transmission rate to the lattice shortest vector problem.
