Abstract

Liquid-liquid phase separation, whereby two liquids spontaneously demix, is ubiquitous in industrial, environmental, and biological processes. While isotropic fluids are known to condense into spherical droplets in the binodal region, these dynamics are poorly understood for structured fluids. Here, we report the novel observation of condensate networks, which spontaneously assemble during the demixing of a mesogen from a solvent. Condensing mesogens form rapidly-elongating filaments, rather than spheres, to relieve distortion of a simultaneously-forming internal smectic mesophase. As filaments densify, they collapse into bulged discs, lowering the elastic free energy. Additional distortion is relieved by retraction of filaments into the bulged discs, which are straightened under tension to form a ramified network. Understanding and controlling these dynamics may provide new avenues to direct pattern formation or template materials.

Abstract

This systematic review undertakes a comprehensive analysis of current research on data-to-text generation, identifying gaps, challenges, and future directions within the field. Relevant literature in this field on datasets, evaluation metrics, application areas, multilingualism, language models, and hallucination mitigation methods is reviewed. Various methods for producing high-quality text are explored, addressing the challenge of hallucinations in data-to-text generation. These methods include re-ranking, traditional and neural pipeline architecture, planning architectures, data cleaning, controlled generation, and modification of models and training techniques. Their effectiveness and limitations are assessed, highlighting the need for universally applicable strategies to mitigate hallucinations. The review also examines the usage, popularity, and impact of datasets, alongside evaluation metrics, with an emphasis on both automatic and human assessment. Additionally, the evolution of data-to-text models, particularly the widespread adoption of transformer models, is discussed. Despite advancements in text quality, the review emphasizes the importance of research in low-resourced languages and the engineering of datasets in these languages to promote inclusivity. Finally, several application domains of data-to-text are highlighted, emphasizing their relevance in such domains. Overall, this review serves as a guiding framework for fostering innovation and advancing data-to-text generation.

Abstract

This research focused on the optimization of marine vessels for the efficient distribution of relief materials to IDP camps in north eastern Nigeria. Optimizing marine vessels for relief distribution enhances the region's disaster preparedness by providing a diversified transportation network that can respond effectively to emergencies. The northeastern region of Nigeria has experienced ongoing conflict and security challenges. Marine routes may offer a safer means of transportation, reducing the risks associated with land-based convoys. Marine vessels can navigate through rivers and lakes, offering a faster and more efficient means of transporting relief materials compared to overland routes that may be congested or unsafe. The optimization process involves the consideration of several objective factors like operational cost, speed, fuel efficiency, route suitability/maneuverability, and serviceability. The decision-making process is often intricate and occasionally marked by conflicting criteria, which presents a notable challenge. In contrast to the traditional method of selecting marine vessels for various tasks, the AHP-TOPSIS approach offers a more systematic means of identifying the optimal choice, ensuring objectivity and coherence. Within this investigation, it was determined that the primary criterion of utmost significance, with a priority value of 0.416 based on the AHP method, was the reliability and safety of the vessel option. Other criteria, such as operational cost, speed, fuel efficiency, route suitability/maneuverability, and serviceability, held values of 0.110, 0.098, 0.114, 0.172, and 0.090, respectively. A total of nine alternatives were assessed: automated underwater vehicle, tugboat, F-25 boat, dinghies, small catamaran, pontoon boat, ferries, hovercraft boat, and kayaks & canoes. The outcome indicated that the small catamaran was the most suitable vessel for the distribution of relief materials. The methodology introduced in this study streamlines the process of optimizing vessel alternatives in a dependable and efficient manner.

Abstract

Abstract Background Understanding the level of exposure to Lassa virus (LASV) in at-risk communities allows for the administration of effective preventive interventions to mitigate epidemics of Lassa fever. We assessed the seroprevalence of LASV antibodies in rural and semiurban communities of two cosmopolitan cities in Nigeria with poorly understood Lassa epidemiology. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in ten communities located in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abuja, and Ikorodu Local Government Area (LGA), Lagos, from February 2nd to July 5th, 2022. Serum samples collected from participants were analyzed for IgG and IgM antibodies using a ReLASV® Pan-Lassa NP IgG/IgM enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. A questionnaire administered to participants collected self-reported sociodemographic and LASV exposure information. Seroprevalence of LASV IgG/IgM was estimated overall, and by study site. Univariate and multivariate log-binomial models estimated unadjusted and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for site-specific risk factors for LASV seropositivity. Grouped Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) was used for variable selection for multivariate analysis. Results A total of 628 participants with serum samples were included in the study. Most participants were female (434, 69%), married (459, 73%), and had a median age of 38 years (interquartile range 28–50). The overall seroprevalence was 27% (171/628), with a prevalence of 33% (126/376) in Abuja and 18% (45/252) in Lagos. Based on site-specific grouped LASSO selection, enrollment in the dry season (vs. wet; aPR, 95% CI: 1.73, 1.33–2.24), reported inconsistent washing of fruits and vegetables (aPR, 95% CI: 1.45, 1.10–1.92), and a positive malaria rapid test (aPR, 95% CI: 1.48, 1.09-2.00) were independently associated with LASV seropositivity in Abuja, whereas, only a self-reported history of rhinorrhea (PR, 95% CI: 2.21, 1.31–3.72) was independently associated with Lassa seropositivity in Lagos. Conclusions The LASV seroprevalence was comparable to that in other areas in Nigeria. Our findings corroborate those from other studies on the importance of limiting human exposure to rodents and focusing on behavioral factors such as poor hygiene practices to reduce exposure to LASV.

Abstract

Skin aging is a multifaceted process influenced by genetic, environmental, and immunological factors, resulting in visible changes such as wrinkles, pigmentation, and alterations in skin texture. Despite its high relevance, there is a paucity of large-scale studies focusing on visible age-related changes in facial skin among Japanese populations, particularly by region. This study aims to address these gaps by examining age- and sex-specific skin changes in a large cohort of 2,543 Japanese subjects using advanced skin imaging techniques. The study included subjects aged 17–71 years who provided informed consent. The imaging system captures facial images using standard light, UV light, and two types of polarized light, applying deep learning techniques to analyze various skin parameters. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate correlations between age, gender, and skin characteristics. Results indicated significant correlations between age and skin color across all domains, with large pores on the nose showing the highest correlation with age. Sebum and porphyrin levels exhibited a decreasing trend with age, though correlation coefficients were low. Cheek gloss, both in area and color, showed relatively high correlation coefficients. Pigmentation-related items, such as spots and melanin, demonstrated significant age correlations, particularly in areas like the corners of the eyes, under the eyes, and cheeks. Wrinkles and fine wrinkles correlated with age in various regions, though not on the forehead. The findings highlight the importance of understanding regional and demographic variations in skin aging to develop effective anti-aging treatments.

Abstract

The study evaluated the land productivity of root crop farmers amidst pesticide application in southeast, Nigeria. 358 root crop producers were chosen using a multi-stage sample and given a questionnaire. The analysis of the data included the use of mean, frequency, percentage, total factor and partial factor productivity, analysis of variance, multiple regression model, and local average treatment effect (LATE). Data were acquired using primary means. The results show that root crop growers were mostly women (76.9%), married (85.1%), educated (mean=12.0), and in their prime working age (51). Estimates of total factor productivity (TFP) and partial factor productivity (PFP) gave 7.69 and 177.25, which indicates higher land productivity values across Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi State. Education, access to farm inputs, soil/land improvement practices, size of farm, and extension relations were important components of land productivity across the States. Use and application of pesticides according to specified recommendation increased land productivity by (727.07%) and (880.28%). Erosion problems (99.7%), pests and disease (96.9%), high cost of inputs (99.1%), climate change (99.4) and land fragmentation (93.0%) constrained land productivity in the States. Study recommends farmers to practice more of land improvement practices and adhere to specified pesticide use and application to increase land productivity

Background: Diarrhoea is one of the major causes of morbidity and mortality among infants and young children in developing countries. More than half of the deaths due to diarrhoea results from dehydration and/or excessive loss of essential nutrients including micronutrients such as zinc, copper and vitamin A These micronutrients are essential for immunological protection, as well as the proper growth and development of children. Objective: To determine the serum and stool levels of zinc, copper and vitamin A in children presenting with diarrhoea. Methods: This was a comparative cross-sectional study. Thirty consecutive infants with diarrhoea from the Diarrhoea Training Unit (subjects) and thirty without diarrhoea (controls) from the Infant Welfare clinic of the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH], were studied. The feeding practices, diarrhoeal history, and anthropometric measurements of the study and control groups were noted. Their sera and stool samples were analyzed for zinc and copper using Vernox Elmer Atomic Absorption spectrophotometer and for Vitamin A using spectrophotometer Pye Unicain PU 8600. Abstract

This study investigated the potential of calcined clays from Nigerian deposits in the production of ternary blends of cement. Clay samples were obtained from three different locations namely: Ikpeshi, Okpilla and Uzebba. The raw clay samples were then calcined at 700°C and 800°C. Chemical and mineralogical compositions were determined for the raw and calcined clay samples using XRF and XRD respectively. The chemical composition confirmed these clays as potential pozzolans with SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3 collectively exceeding 70%. XRD analysis identified kaolinite and quartz as major mineral phases in the raw clays, which transformed into metakaolin upon calcination. Compressive strength tests on mortar samples prepared with 50% substitution of Portland cement with the calcined clay and limestone, showed that Ikpeshi clay at 800°C had the best strength performance, with a strength activity index of 0.92 at 28 days, demonstrating superior pozzolanic potential. Strength development was more significant between 7 and 28 days, indicating the pozzolanic reaction's contribution to long-term strength. However, the initial strength at 3 days was lower than the reference cement due to a delayed pozzolanic reaction. XRD analysis of blended pastes revealed typical hydration phases like portlandite, C-S-H, Strätlingite, and ettringite, with the ternary blends showing reduced portlandite content, indicating absorption by the pozzolan's alumina phase. Durability assessments revealed that the ternary blends exhibited improved resistance to water and chloride ion ingress. These findings highlight the effectiveness of Nigerian calcined clays in producing durable and sustainable concrete, supporting their use as supplementary cementitious materials to reduce the environmental impact of concrete production.

Abstract

Lassa fever (LF) is a tropical health challenge affecting farmers’ performance in the farm, hence, its spread must stop and prevented. Therefore, the objective of this paper was to assess the rural farmers’ knowledge, belief, risk communication sources and information needs of Lassa fever affected communities of Ebonyi State, Nigeria using appropriate standard methods including questionnaire and oral interview on 650 farmers. Data obtained and analyzed reveals that 100% of the farmers are aware of Lassa fever. Over 90% of them could recognize symptoms of Lassa fever such as general body weakness, headache, fever, bleeding among others. They have knowledge of the transmission such as eating of rats(79.1%), eating rat contaminated foods(86.7%), staying with infected person(90.3%), and for prevention, washing of hands (63.6%), not eating rats(83.1%), cleaning of the environment(92.3%). The farmers believed that Lassa fever is manipulated spiritually (61.1%), is caused by the devil(74%), punishment from God(81.1%), cured with local herbs(92.4%).They get information about Lassa fever from television, radio, fellow farmers, extension agents, village neighbors among other sources. To be well informed, they need more information on the origin, causes, treatment, transmission, prevention and cost.

Abstract

Climate change can disrupt food availability, reduce access to food, and affect food quality thereby creating a challenging condition for farm disaster management. Hence, this paper examines the role of agricultural extension and advisory providers in farm disaster management response, and recovery in the face of changing climate in Southeastern Nigeria using appropriate standard methods by soliciting responses from 452 Agricultural Extension officers with the aid of questionnaire and oral discussions. Results showed that the farm disasters prevalent in the area includes floods (99.5%), landslides (93.8%), pests/diseases (95.1%), man-made disasters (98.4%) among others. The impacts are numerous such as loss of financial resources (93.5%), loss of human lives (99.3%), disruption of extension services delivery (100%), leads to epidemics (99.3%) and many more. The EASPs can render mitigation, preparedness, response, recovery services to smallholder farmers and communities to minimize losses, recovery time, and resources to fill the gap created by the extreme events. A quick recovery/revival to normal life can only be achieved immediately if skilled professional Extension workers are allowed to play their roles effectively.

Abstract

Abstract Geochemical and biomarker characteristics of representative crude oil samples from selected fields in southern Nigeria were evaluated to determine the organic matter input, origin of biological material, depositional environment, thermal maturity, and genetic relationship between the oils. Four crude oil samples were obtained from various oil producing fields from Delta, Bayelsa and Abia state in southern Nigeria and labeled Kwale (KW), Kolo creek (KLC), Owaza (OWA1 and OWA2). The crude oil samples were fractionated into saturates, aromatic hydrocarbons and polar compounds using column chromatography on silica gel thereafter, analyzed using Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS). The calculated ratios of normal alkanes, acyclic isoprenoids, carbon preference index (CPI), hopanes, and steranes showed the following results: Pr/Ph (0.34 to 0.89); C29/C27 (0.78 to 1.25); 20S/(20S + 20R)C29sterane (0.28 to 0.66); 22S/(22S + 22R)C32 homohopane (0.17 to 0.23); CPI (0.96 to 0.98); Ts/Ts + Tm (0.46 to 0.50); and sterane/hopane (0.16 to 0.87). The results obtained were used to correlate the crude oils with respect to depositional environment, thermal maturity, and organic matter source. The Pr/Ph ratios of KW and KLC were less than one, and the cross-plot of Pr/nC17 versus Ph/nC18 of KW and KLC suggested that the oils were deposited under anoxic environments, whereas OWA1 and OWA2 indicated oxic conditions with no biodegradation. From the calculated ratios of 22S (22S + 22R)C32 homohopane and CPI, the oils were mature and had entered the generating window. Sample OWA1 is the most mature, while KLC is the least mature. The calculated ratios also showed that the four oil samples were from a shale source rock with both terrestrial and marine inputs.

BackgroundEnsovibep (MP0420) is a designed ankyrin repeat protein, a novel class of engineered proteins, under investigation as a treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infection.ObjectiveTo investigate if ensovibep, in addition to remdesivir and other standard care, improves clinical outcomes among patients hospitalized with COVID-19 compared with standard care alone.DesignDouble-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial. The primary outcome was time to sustained recovery through day 90, defined as 14 consecutive days at home or place of usual residence after hospital discharge. A composite safety outcome that included death, serious adverse events, end-organ disease, and serious infections was assessed through day 90.ResultsAn independent data and safety monitoring board recommended that enrollment be halted for early futility after 485 patients were randomly assigned and received an infusion of ensovibep (n = 247) or placebo (n = 238). As the storm of ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan’s request for arrest warrants loomed and landed on Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and his Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, ardent supporters of Israel within the U.S. and U.K. governments and beyond appear to have seized upon a jurisdictional objection. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is reported as saying that the “ICC has no jurisdiction over this matter.” The U.K. Foreign Secretary David Cameron is reported to have said the same thing. There is a basic flaw, though, in the treaty-based objection to the ICC jurisdiction as has been made. It ignores the nature of the mandate of international criminal tribunals as mechanisms for the effective preservation of the basic fabric of the international order.

33. Exploring Sociodemographic Predictors of Suicide Ideation and Attempts: Insights from a Mental Health Emergency Hotline Data

Abstract

Background: Despite its classification as a pressing public health concern, suicide prevention has not garnered the necessary attention in Nigeria. An important step towards achieving this is to identify groups that are at risk. Objective: This study examines the sociodemographic predictors of suicide ideation and attempts among callers of mental health emergency hotlines in Nigeria from March 2022 to September 2023. Methods: The study combines retrospective cohort and cross-sectional research designs. Data were gathered from callers to the emergency hotline system, with information recorded in an Excel spreadsheet and subsequently exported to SPSS for analysis. The analysis involved a chi-square test and binary logistic regression. Findings: Out of the 717 calls received, 512 were connected to mental health care. Out of these mental health-related calls, 43% reported suicide ideation, while 11.7% reported suicide attempts. The chi-square test showed an association between marital status and suicide ideation (χ2 = 9.990; p-value = .007) and between religious affiliation and suicide attempts (χ2 = 7.573; p-value = .006). However, the combination of sociodemographic variables like gender, age, marital status, religious affiliation, employment status and region of residence showed that age and marital status were predictors of suicide ideation. Specifically, those aged between 20 – 29 years (AOR = .530, p = .047), 30 – 39 (AOR = .036, p = .036) and 40 – 49 years (AOR = .391, p = .058) were less likely to think about suicide compared to those aged 19 and below. Compared to single people, those who are separated or divorced are less likely to think about suicide (AOR = .302, p = .001). Predictors of suicide attempts included marital status and religious affiliation. Specifically, those who are married are less likely to have attempted suicide compared to those who are single (AOR = .351, p = .024). Christians are less likely to have attempted suicide compared to those who identify as Muslims (AOR = .421, p = .004). Conclusion: As authorities grapple with the public health challenge of suicide, this research calls for targeted interventions and support mechanisms to address the unique needs of at-risk populations. Unique contribution: This study has offered empirical evidence for understanding the contributing role of sociodemographic factors on suicide ideation and attempts. This information could be useful to health education experts who seek to plan campaigns to control suicide in developing countries like Nigeria. Key recommendations: The study recommends more investment in suicide prevention in Nigeria, especially ones targeting vulnerable groups such as adolescents, singles and those who are unemployed. Furthermore, it suggests suicide prevention interventions should incorporate culturally sensitive spiritual or religious components to enhance their effectiveness.

This article reviews an assessment of the current status, challenges, opportunities, and implications of liquified natural gas supply infrastructure development in Nigeria's maritime sector by qualitatively harvesting secondary data from several sources. The paper recommends the provision of LNG bunkering facilities at Lekki deep seaport.

Abstract

This study explores the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) teachers' pedagogical practices and how such practices can help the teachers' use of relevant guiding pedagogical principles in practice in Nigerian TVET system to facilitate quality learning. Employing a three-tiered ethnographic case study approach, we learned how 24 TVET teachers from purposively selected six Nigerian public universities used guiding pedagogical principles in practice to facilitate quality student learning. Focusing on five guiding pedagogical principles in practice identified from the thematic analysis, we analysed different pedagogical practices that teachers can adopt to facilitate quality TVET learning which include demonstration of learning, problem-based learning, seeing learners as knowers, active learning, and questioning. Drawing upon the thematic analysis, participants made recommendations for the continuous professional development of TVET teachers to enable them to improve in their use of the guiding pedagogical principles in practice to facilitate quality learning and graduate outcomes.

42. Simple production of cellulose nanofibril microcapsules and the rheology of their suspensions

Abstract

Microcapsules are commonly used in applications ranging from therapeutics to personal care products due to their ability to deliver encapsulated species through their porous shells. Here, we demonstrate a simple and scalable approach to fabricate microcapsules with porous shells by interfacial complexation of cellulose nanofibrils and oleylamine, and investigate the rheological properties of suspensions of the resulting microcapsules. The suspensions of neat capsules are viscous liquids whose viscosity increases with volume fraction according to a modified Kreiger-Dougherty relation with a maximum packing fraction of 0.73 and an intrinsic viscosity of 4. When polyacrylic acid (PAA) is added to the internal phase of the microcapsule, however, the suspensions become elastic and display yield stresses with power-law dependencies on capsule volume fraction and PAA concentration. The elasticity appears to originate from associative interactions between microcapsules induced by PAA that resides within the microcapsule shells. These results demonstrate that it is possible to tune the rheological properties of microcapsule suspensions by changing only the composition of the internal phase, thereby providing a novel method to tailor complex fluid rheology.

Abstract

Onchocerciasis causes severe morbidity in sub-Saharan Africa. Abia, Anambra, Enugu, and Imo states of Nigeria were historically classified meso- or hyperendemic and eligible for ivermectin mass drug administration (MDA). After ≥25 years of annual and biannual MDA, serological and entomological assessments were conducted to determine if Onchocerca volvulus transmission was interrupted. Dried blood spots collected in October 2020 from ≥3167 children 5–9 years old in each state were screened for O. volvulus-specific Ov16 antibody by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Additionally, 52,187 Simulium damnosum heads (≥8845 per state) collected over 12 months between 2021 and 2022 were tested by pooled polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for O-150 DNA. Among seven seropositive children, four were found for follow-up skin snip PCR to confirm active infection. Three were negative and the fourth was excluded as he was visiting from an endemic state. The final seroprevalence estimates of each state had 95% upper confidence limits (UCL) < 0.1%. All fly pools were negative by O-150 PCR, giving a 95% UCL infective fly prevalence < 0.05% in each state. Each state therefore met the World Health Organization epidemiological and entomological criteria for stopping MDA effective January 2023. With 18.9 million residents eligible for MDA, this marked the largest global onchocerciasis stop-treatment decision to date.

The data collection tools were questionnaires that included the participants’ demographics, their E-Health Literacy, their current mobile phone usage, and their desires for mobile phone use for burn care services. Results Most informal caregivers had smartphones (83.0%) and Internet access (81.3%). Most participants occasionally used phone calls (63.4%), the Internet (45.5%), and social media (42.9) to receive information about psychosocial disorders, infection control, wound care, pain, itch, physical exercise, and feeding. Most participants have never used some of the mobile phone functionalities to receive burn-related information, such as applications/Software (99.1%) and e-mail (99.1%). Abstract

Abstract Background Sida linifolia L. is a weed ubiquitously found in Africa with several folkloric applications. Traditional healers in the Southeastern part of Nigeria employ the alcoholic concoction of S. linifolia leaves as antidepressants, anti-malaria, antihypertensive, anti-abortifacients, and for managing painful whitlow; however, these claims lack scientific validation. The present study was aimed to explore the phytochemical profile of the plant, S. linifolia with special emphasis to its antioxidant and inhibitory actions on enzymes linked to inflammation, diabetes, and neurological disorders. Phytochemical profiling and in vitro antioxidant and enzyme inhibition assays were employed to assess the pharmacological profile of S. linifolia ethanolic leaf fraction (SLELF). Results Preliminary phytochemical screening of SLELF revealed appreciable amounts of total phenolics (91.64 ± 7.61 mg GAE/g), total tannins (62.44 ± 3.86 mg TAE/g), and total flavonoids (27.35 ± 1.48 mg QE/g) present in SLELF. Results of HPLC analysis of SLELF revealed rich composition in bioactive compounds such as ellagic acid, quercetin, ferulic acid, 3,4-dimethoxy benzoic acid, gallic acid, 4-methoxy cinnamic acid, sinapic acid, vanillic acid, and chlorogenic acid. Enzymatic antioxidants (catalase and superoxide dismutase), non-enzymatic antioxidants (reduced glutathione (GSH), Vit A, C, and E), elemental minerals (Cu, Mn, Zn, Cr, Fe, and Ca), and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) were present in SLELF in appreciable levels. At various concentrations (0.2–1.0 mg/ml), SLELF exhibited potent and concentration-dependent hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic) acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activities and exerted moderate inhibitory actions on enzymes associated with inflammation (cyclooxogenase-2 (COX-2) and lipoxygenases (LOXs), diabetes (α-amylase, α-glucosidase), and neurological disorders (butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and γ-aminobutyric acid transaminase (GABA-T), compared to respective standards (ascorbic acid, acarbose, indomethacin, galanthamine, and vigabatrin). Perhaps, the observed potent pharmacological activities of SLELF could be anchored to its phytoconstituents. Furthermore, the slightly higher ranges of IC50 values (0.57–0.87 mg/ml) of SLELF compared to standards (0.44–0.68 mg/ml) suggest moderation in enzyme inhibition that may preclude adverse side effects. Conclusion This study lends credence to the folklore claims of S. linifolia leaves and revealed its potential as possible source of bioactive compounds for medicinal and pharmaceutical exploration.
