The violation of Baryon Number, $\mathcal{B}$, is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR %experiment program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source (ESS) to search for baryon number violation. The program will include high-sensitivity searches for processes that violate baryon number by one or two units: free neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n\rightarrow \bar{n}$) via mixing, neutron-antineutron oscillation via regeneration from a sterile neutron state ($n\rightarrow [n',\bar{n}'] \rightarrow \bar{n}$), and neutron disappearance ($n\rightarrow n'$); the effective $\Delta \mathcal{B}=0$ process of neutron regeneration ($n\rightarrow [n',\bar{n}'] \rightarrow n$) is also possible. The program can be used to discover and characterise mixing in the neutron, antineutron, and sterile neutron sectors. The experiment addresses topical open questions such as the origins of baryogenesis, the nature of dark matter, and is sensitive to scales of new physics substantially in excess of those available at colliders. A goal of the program is to open a discovery window to neutron conversion probabilities (sensitivities) by up to three orders of magnitude compared with previous searches. The opportunity to make such a leap in sensitivity tests should not be squandered. The experiment pulls together a diverse international team of physicists from the particle (collider and low energy) and nuclear physics communities, while also including specialists in neutronics and magnetics.

The neutron's permanent electric dipole moment $d_n$ is constrained to below $3\times10^{-26} e~\text{cm}$ (90% C.L.) [ arXiv:hep-ex/0602020, arXiv:1509.04411 ], by experiments using ultracold neutrons (UCN). We plan to improve this limit by an order of magnitude or more with PanEDM, the first experiment exploiting the ILL's new UCN source SuperSUN. SuperSUN is expected to provide a high density of UCN with energies below 80 neV, implying extended statistical reach with respect to existing sources, for experiments that rely on long storage or spin-precession times. Systematic errors in PanEDM are strongly suppressed by passive magnetic shielding, with magnetic field and gradient drifts at the single fT level. A holding-field homogeneity on the order of $10^{-4}$ is achieved in low residual fields, via a high static damping factor and built-in coil system. No comagnetometer is needed for the first order-of-magnitude improvement in $d_n$, thanks to high magnetic stability and an assortment of sensors outside the UCN storage volumes. PanEDM will be commissioned and upgraded in parallel with SuperSUN, to take full advantage of the source's output in each phase. We analyse a change of a deficit of reactor antineutrinos at distances smaller than 100 m by changing the lifetime of the neutron from tau_n = 885.7 s to tau_n = 879.6 s, calculated for the axial coupling constants lambda = - 1.2694 and lambda = - 1.2750, respectively, in order to get a result corresponding the new world average value tau_n = 880.1(1.1) s. We calculate the angular distribution and cross section for the inverse beta-decay, taking into account the contributions of the "weak magnetism" and the neutron recoil to next-to-leading order in the large baryon mass expansion and the radiative corrections of order alpha/\pi ~ 10^(-3), calculated to leading order in the large baryon mass expansion. We obtain an increase of a deficit of reactor antineutrinos in of about 0.734%., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures, The paper is revised. We have fixed the origin of the discrepancy between radiative corrections to the correlation coefficient B, calculated in our paper and by Fukugita and Kubota Ref.[10] and Raha, Myhrer and Kudobera Ref.[11]. The accumulation of dark matter near the Earth is considered. We analyze the case of long range interaction forces. Additional density of the dark matter at the Earth's surface is calculated. We show that this density exceeds the mean density of the dark matter in our galaxy by more then $10^5$ times for some values of dark matter particle mass. Accumulation of WIMP's near the Earth by the same mechanism is also analyzed., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

We performed a detailed analysis and the Monte Carlo simulation of the neutron lifetime experiment [S. Arzumanov et al., Phys. Lett. B 483 (2000) 15] because of the strong disagreement by 5.6 standard deviations between the results of this experiment and our experiment [A. Serebrov et al., Phys. Lett. B 605 (2005) 72]. We found a few effects which were not taken into account in the experiment [S. Arzumanov et al., Phys. Lett. B 483 (2000) 15]. The possible correction is -5.5 s with uncertainty of 2.4 s which comes from initial data knowledge. We assume that after taking into account this correction the result of work [S. Arzumanov et al., Phys. Lett. B 483 (2000) 15] for neutron lifetime 885.4 +/- 0.9stat +/- 0.4syst s could be corrected to 879.9 +/- 0.9stat +/- 2.4syst s., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We analyse the continuum-state and bound-state beta^-decay rates of the neutron. For the calculation of theoretical values of the decay rates we use the new value for the axial coupling constant g_A = 1.2750(9), obtained recently by H. Abele (Progr. Part. Nucl. Phys., 60, 1 (2008)) from the fit of the experimental data on the neutron spin-electron correlation coefficient of the electron energy spectrum of the continuum-state beta^- decay of the neutron. We take into account the contribution of radiative corrections and the scalar and tensor weak couplings. We define correlation coefficients of the electron energy spectrum in terms of axial, scalar and tensor coupling constants. Using recent precise experimental data for the lifetime of the neutron and correlation coefficients we estimate the scalar and tensor weak coupling constants. The bound-state beta^- decay rates of the neutron we calculate as functions of axial, scalar and tensor weak coupling constants. We show that dominantly the neutron decays into hydrogen in the hyperfine states with total angular momentum F = 0. The calculated angular distributions of the probabilities of the bound-state beta^- decays of the polarised neutron can be used for the experimental measurements of the bound-state beta^- decays into the hyperfine states with a total angular momentum F = 1., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure

Ultra-cold neutrons (UCN), neutrons with energies low enough to be confined by the Fermi potential in material bottles, are playing an increasing role in measurements of fundamental properties of the neutron. The ability to manipulate UCN with material guides and bottles, magnetic fields, and gravity can lead to experiments with lower systematic errors than have been obtained in experiments with cold neutron beams. The UCN densities provided by existing reactor sources limit these experiments. The promise of much higher densities from solid deuterium sources has led to proposed facilities coupled to both reactor and spallation neutron sources. In this paper we report on the performance of a prototype spallation neutron-driven solid deuterium source. This source produced bottled UCN densities of 145 +/-7 UCN/cm3, about three times greater than the largest bottled UCN densities previously reported. These results indicate that a production UCN source with substantially higher densities should be possible.

In the Standard Model of elementary particles, quark-mixing is expressed in terms of a 3 x 3 unitary matrix V, the so called Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. Significant unitarity checks are so far possible for the first row of this matrix. This article reviews the experimental and theoretical information on these matrix elements. On the experimental side, we find a 2.2 sigma to 2.7 sigma deviation from unitarity, which conflicts with the Standard Model., Comment: accepted by EPJ C
