The Adaptive Cross Approximation (ACA) method is widely used to approximate admissible blocks of hierarchical matrices, or H-matrices, from discretized operators in the boundary integral method. These matrices are fully populated, making their storage and manipulation resource-intensive. ACA constructs a low-rank approximation by evaluating only a few rows and columns of the original operator, significantly reducing computational costs. A key aspect of ACA's effectiveness is the selection of pivots, which are entries common to the evaluated row and column of the original matrix. This paper proposes combining the classical, purely algebraic ACA method with a geometrical pivot selection based on the central subsets and extreme property subsets. The method is named ACA-GP, GP stands for Geometrical Pivots. Plastic flow is conventionally treated as continuous in finite element (FE) codes, whether in isotropic, anisotropic plasticity, or crystal plasticity. This approach, derived from continuum mechanics, contradicts the intermittent nature of plasticity at the elementary scale. Understanding crystal plasticity at micro-scale opens the door to new engineering applications, such as microscale machining. In this work, a new approach is proposed to account for the intermittence of plastic deformation while remaining within the framework of continuum mechanics. We introduce a material parameter, the plastic deformation threshold, denoted as $\Delta p_{min}$, corresponding to the plastic deformation carried by the minimal plastic deformation burst within the material. The incremental model is based on the traditional predictor-corrector algorithm to calculate the elastoplastic behavior of a material subjected to any external loading. The model is presented within the framework of small deformations for von Mises plasticity. To highlight the main features of the approach, the plastic strain increment is calculated using normality rule and consistency conditions, and is accepted only if it exceeds $\Delta p_{min}$. To achieve this, a time-discontinuous generalization of the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions is proposed. The simulations show that the introduction of the plastic threshold allows for the reproduction of the spatiotemporal intermittence of plastic flow, capturing the self-organization of plastic flow in complex loading scenarios within an FE model.

This paper explores the electrical and thermal conductivity of complex contact spots on the surface of a half-space. Employing an in-house Fast Boundary Element Method implementation, various complex geometries were studied. Our investigation begins with annulus contact spots to assess the impact of connectedness. We then study shape effects on "multi-petal" spots exhibiting dihedral symmetry, resembling flowers, stars, and gears. The analysis culminates with self-affine shapes, representing a multiscale generalization of the multi-petal forms. In each case, we introduce appropriate normalizations and develop phenomenological models. For multi-petal shapes, our model relies on a single geometric parameter: the normalized number of "petals". This approach inspired the form of the phenomenological model for self-affine spots, which maintains physical consistency and relies on four geometric characteristics: standard deviation, second spectral moment, Nayak parameter, and Hurst exponent. As a by-product, these models enabled us to suggest flux estimations for an infinite number of petals and the fractal limit. This study represents an initial step into understanding the conductivity of complex contact interfaces, which commonly occur in the contact of rough surfaces., Comment: 42 pages, 30 figures

The chapter explores language and non-language university students' practices of foreign language learning within the unscheduled shift to remote studies in Russia due to the COVID-19 emergency. The RUDN University Law Institute experience is considered as an example. The paper explores common and specific features of foreign language, translation, and interpreting skills training within the Law Institute language and non-language programmes. The research rests on the case study methodology, considered from the policy-making and managerial point of view. The findings reveal both common features and specificities of multilingual university education of non-language and language students. The study also confirms the need for the educational institutions to draft specific guidelines on language courses implementation for different target audiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Meta-learning methods aim to build learning algorithms capable of quickly adapting to new tasks in low-data regime. One of the most difficult benchmarks of such algorithms is a one-shot learning problem. In this setting many algorithms face uncertainties associated with limited amount of training samples, which may result in overfitting. This problem can be resolved by providing additional information to the model. One of the most efficient ways to do this is multi-task learning. In this paper we investigate the modification of a standard meta-learning pipeline. The proposed method simultaneously utilizes information from several meta-training tasks in a common loss function. The impact of these tasks in the loss function is controlled by a per task weight. Proper optimization of the weights can have big influence on training and the final quality of the model. We propose and investigate the use of methods from the family of Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA) for optimization of meta-train tasks weights. We also demonstrate superiority of stochastic approximation in comparison to gradient-based method. The proposed Multi-Task Modification can be applied to almost all meta-learning methods. We study applications of this modification on Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning and Prototypical Network algorithms on CIFAR-FS, FC100, miniImageNet and tieredImageNet one-shot learning benchmarks. During these experiments Multi-Task Modification has demonstrated improvement over original methods. SPSA-Tracking algorithm first adapted in this paper for multi-task weight optimization shows the largest accuracy boost that is competitive to the state-of-the-art meta-learning methods. At near-grounded glacier termini, calving can lead to the capsize of kilometer-scale unstable icebergs. The transient contact force applied by the capsizing iceberg on the glacier front generates seismic waves that propagate over teleseismic distances. The inversion of this seismic signal is of great interest to get insight into actual and past capsize dynamics. However, the iceberg size, which is of interest for geophysical and climatic studies, cannot be recovered from the seismic amplitude alone. This is because the capsize is a complex process involving interactions between the iceberg, the glacier and the surrounding water. This paper presents a first step towards the construction of a complete model, and is focused on the capsize in the open ocean without glacier front nor ice-m\'elange. The capsize dynamics of an iceberg in the open ocean is captured by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, which allows assessing the complexity of the fluid motion around a capsizing iceberg and how far the ocean is affected by iceberg rotation. Expressing the results in terms of appropriate dimensionless variables, we show that laboratory scale and field scale capsizes can be directly compared. The capsize dynamics is found to be highly sensitive to the iceberg aspect ratio and to the water and ice densities. However, dealing at the same time with the fluid dynamics and the contact between the iceberg and the deformable glacier front requires highly complex coupling that often goes beyond actual capabilities of fluid-structure interaction softwares. Therefore, we developed a semi-analytical simplified fluid-structure model (SAFIM) that can be implemented in solid mechanics computations dealing with contact dynamics of deformable solids. We developed a computational framework for simulating thin fluid flow in narrow interfaces between contacting solids, which is relevant for a range of engineering, biological and geophysical applications. The treatment of this problem requires coupling between fluid and solid mechanics equations, further complicated by contact constraints and potentially complex geometrical features of contacting surfaces. We developed a monolithic finite-element framework for handling mechanical contact, thin incompressible viscous flow and fluid-induced tractions on the surface of the solid, suitable for both one- and two-way coupling approaches. Additionally, we consider the possibility of fluid entrapment in "pools" delimited by contact patches and its pressurisation following a non-linear compressibility constitutive law. Furthermore, image analysis algorithms were adapted to identify the local status of each interface element within the Newton-Raphson loop. First, an application of the proposed framework for a problem with a model geometry is given, and the robustness is demonstrated by the residual-wise and status-wise convergence. The full capability of the developed two-way coupling framework is demonstrated on a problem of a fluid flow in contact interface between a solid with representative rough surface and a rigid flat. The evolution of the contact pressure, fluid flow pattern and the morphology of trapped fluid zones until the complete sealing of the interface is displayed. Additionally, we demonstrated an almost mesh-independent result of a refined post-processing approach to the real contact-area computation. The developed framework permits not only to study the evolution of effective properties of contact interfaces, but also to highlight the difference between one- and two-way coupling approaches and to quantify the effect of multiple trapped fluid "pools" on the coupled problem., Comment: 38 pages, 15 figures

A method to treat frictional contact problems along embedded surfaces in the finite element framework is developed. Arbitrarily shaped embedded surfaces, cutting through finite element meshes, are handled by the X-FEM. The frictional contact problem is solved using the monolithic augmented Lagrangian method within the mortar framework which was adapted for handling embedded surfaces. We report that the resulting mixed formulation is prone to mesh locking in case of high elastic and mesh density contrasts across the contact interface. The mesh locking manifests itself in spurious stress oscillations in the vicinity of the contact interface. We demonstrate that in the classical patch test, these oscillations can be removed simply by using triangular blending elements. In a more general case, the triangulation is shown inefficient, therefore stabilization of the problem is achieved by adopting a recently proposed coarse-graining interpolation of Lagrange multipliers. Moreover, we demonstrate that the coarse-graining is also beneficial for the classical mortar method to avoid spurious oscillations for contact interfaces with high elastic contrast. We present a unified framework to tie overlapping meshes in solid mechanics applications. This framework is a combination of the X-FEM method and the mortar method, which uses Lagrange multipliers to fulfill the tying constraints. As known, mixed formulations are prone to mesh locking which manifests itself by the emergence of spurious oscillations in the vicinity of the tying interface. To overcome this inherent difficulty, we suggest a new coarse-grained interpolation of Lagrange multipliers. This technique consists in selective assignment of Lagrange multipliers on nodes of the mortar side and in non-local interpolation of the associated traction field. The optimal choice of the coarse-graining spacing is guided solely by the mesh-density contrast between the mesh of the mortar side and the number of blending elements of the host mesh. The method is tested on two patch tests (compression and bending) for different interpolations and element types as well as for different material and mesh contrasts. The optimal mesh convergence and removal of spurious oscillations is also demonstrated on the Eshelby inclusion problem for high contrasts of inclusion/matrix materials. In this paper we use a deterministic multi-asperity model to investigate the elastic contact of rough spheres. Synthetic rough surfaces with controllable spectra were used to identify individual asperities, their locations and curvatures. The deterministic analysis enables to capture both particular deformation modes of individual rough surfaces and also statistical deformation regimes, which involve averaging over a big number of roughness realizations. Two regimes of contact area growth were identified: the Hertzian regime at light loads at the scale of a single asperity, and the linear regime at higher loads involving multiple contacting asperities. The transition between the regimes occurs at the load which depends on the second and the fourth spectral moments. It is shown that at light indentation the radius of circumference delimiting the contact area is always considerably larger than Hertzian contact radius. Therefore, it suggests that there is no scale separation in contact problems at light loads. In particular, the geometrical shape cannot be considered separately from the surface roughness at least for approaching greater than one standard roughness deviation., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, 89 references

A one-dimensional wave propagation through elastically asymmetric media is investigated. A class of metamaterials possessing an arbitrary elastic asymmetry is proposed. This asymmetry results in different wave speeds of tensile and compressive components of elastic waves. The faster component can overtake the slower one resulting in their dissipative annihilation through energy cascades. Efficient absorbing assemblies are presented and analysed numerically. The length of the asymmetric part needed to damp a harmonic signal is determined analytically and validated numerically. Transmission properties for random self-affine wave-packets are studied: a universal scaling for the transmission factor variation with the length of the asymmetric part was established., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures

A pressure driven flow in contact interface between elastic solids with wavy surfaces is studied. We consider a strong coupling between the solid and the fluid problems, which is relevant when the fluid pressure is comparable with the contact pressure. An approximate analytical solution is obtained for this coupled problem. A finite-element monolithically coupled framework is used to solve the problem numerically. A good agreement is obtained between the two solutions within the region of the validity of the analytical one. A power-law interface transmissivity decay is observed near the percolation. Finally, we showed that the external pressure needed to seal the channel is an affine function of the inlet pressure and does not depend on the outlet pressure., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures

We study the mechanical contact between a deformable body with a wavy surface and a rigid flat taking into account pressurized fluid trapped in the interface. A finite element model is formulated for a general problem of trapped fluid for frictionless and frictional contact. Using this model we investigate the evolution of the real contact area, maximal frictional traction and global coefficient of friction under increasing external pressure. Elastic and elasto-plastic material models, compressible and incompressible fluid models and different geometrical characteristics of the wavy surface are used. We show that in case of incompressible fluid, due to its pressurization, the real contact area and the global coefficient of friction decrease monotonically with the increasing external pressure. Ultimately the contact opens and the fluid occupies the entire interface resulting in vanishing of static friction. In case of compressible fluids with pressure-dependent bulk modulus, we demonstrate a non-monotonous behaviour of the global coefficient of friction due to a competition between non-linear evolution of the contact area and of the fluid pressure. However, for realistic compressibility of solids and fluids, contact-opening cannot be reached at realistic pressures. An asymptotic analytical result for the trap-opening pressure is found and shown to be independent of the surface slope if it is small. On the other hand, in case of elastic-perfectly plastic materials, we again observe fluid permeation into the contact interface. Finally, we study the distribution of frictional tractions during the depletion of the contact area under increasing pressure. This process leads to emergence of singularity-like peaks in the tangential tractions (bounded by the Coulomb's limit) near the contact edges. We study frictionless and non-adhesive contact between elastic half-spaces with self-affine surfaces. Using a recently suggested corrective technique, we ensure an unprecedented accuracy in computation of the true contact area evolution under increasing pressure. This accuracy enables us to draw conclusions on the role of the surface's spectrum breadth (Nayak parameter) in the contact area evolution. We show that for a given normalized pressure, the contact area decreases logarithmically with the Nayak parameter. By linking the Nayak parameter with the Hurst exponent (or fractal dimension), we show the effect of the latter on the true contact area. This effect, undetectable for surfaces with poor spectral content, is quite strong for surfaces with rich spectra. Numerical results are compared with analytical models and other available numerical results. A phenomenological equation for the contact area growth is suggested with coefficients depending on the Nayak parameter. Using this equation, the pressure-dependent friction coefficient is deduced based on the adhesive theory of friction. Some observations on Persson's model of rough contact, whose prediction does not depend on Nayak parameter, are reported. Overall, the paper provides a unifying picture of rough elastic contact and clarifies discrepancies between preceding results.

We introduce a corrective function to compensate errors in contact area computations coming from mesh discretization. The correction is based on geometrical arguments and requires only one additional quantity to be computed: the length of contact/non-contact interfaces. The new technique enables us to evaluate accurately the true contact area using a coarse mesh for which the shortest wavelength in the surface spectrum reaches the grid size. The validity of the approach is demonstrated for surfaces with different fractal dimensions and different spectral content using a properly designed mesh convergence test. In addition, we use a topology preserving smoothing technique to adjust the morphology of contact clusters obtained with a coarse grid., Comment: 17 pages

An elastic layer slides on a rigid flat governed by Coulomb's friction law. We demonstrate that if the coefficient of friction is high enough, the sliding localizes within stick-slip pulses, which transform into opening waves propagating at intersonic speed in the direction of sliding or, for high Poisson's ratios, at supersonic speed in the opposite direction. This sliding mode, characterized by marginal frictional dissipation, and similar to carpet fold propagation, may result in inversion of the frictional force direction; at longer time intervals the system demonstrates stick-slip behavior. We revisit the classic problem of an elastic solid with a two-dimensional wavy surface squeezed against an elastic flat half-space from infinitesimal to full contact. Through extensive numerical calculations and analytic derivations, we discover previously overlooked transition regimes. These are seen in particular in the evolution with applied load of the contact area and perimeter, the mean pressure and the probability density of contact pressure. These transitions are correlated with the contact area shape, which is affected by long range elastic interactions. Our analysis has implications for general random rough surfaces, as similar local transitions occur continuously at detached areas or coalescing contact zones. We show that the probability density of null contact pressures is non-zero at full contact. This might suggest revisiting the conditions necessary for applying Persson's model at partial contacts and guide the comparisons with numerical simulations. We study a regularisation of Coulomb's friction law on the propagation of local slip at an interface between a deformable and a rigid solid. This regularisation, which was proposed based on experimental observations, smooths the effect of a sudden jump in the contact pressure over a characteristic length scale. We apply it in numerical simulations in order to analyse its influence on the behaviour of local slip. We first show that mesh convergence in dynamic simulations is achieved without any numerical damping in the bulk and draw a convergence map with respect to the characteristic length of the friction regularisation. By varying this length scale on the example of a given slip event, we observe that there is a critical length below which the friction regularisation does not affect anymore the propagation of the interface rupture. A spectral analysis of the regularisation on a periodic variation of Coulomb's friction is conducted to confirm the existence of this critical length. The results indicate that if the characteristic length of the friction regularisation is smaller than the critical length, a slip event behaves as if it was governed by Coulomb's law. We therefore propose that there is a domain of influence of the friction regularisation depending on its characteristic length and on the frequency content of the local slip event. A byproduct of the analysis is related to the existence of a physical length scale characterising a given frictional interface. We establish that the experimental determination of this interface property may be achieved by experimentally monitoring slip pulses whose frequency content is rich enough., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

To study martensitic phase transformation we use a micromechanical model based on statistical mechanics. Employing lattice Monte-Carlo simulations and realistic material properties for shape-memory alloys (SMA), we investigate the combined influence of the external stress, temperature, and interface energy between the austenitic and martensitic phase on the transformation kinetics and the effective material compliance. The one-dimensional model predicts well many features of the martensitic transformation that are observed experimentally. Particularly, we study the influence of the interface energy on the transformation width and the effective compliance. In perspective, the obtained results might be helpful for the design of new SMAs for more sensitive smart structures and more efficient damping systems., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 22 references

We carry out a statistically meaningful study on self-affine rough surfaces in elastic frictionless non-adhesive contact. We study the evolution of the true contact area under increasing squeezing pressure. Rough surfaces are squeezed from zero up to full contact, which enables us to compare the numerical results both with asperity based models at light pressures and with Persson's contact model for the entire range of pressures. Through the contact perimeter we estimate the error bounds inherent to contact area calculation in discrete problems. A large number of roughness realizations enables us to compute reliably the derivative of the contact area with respect to the pressure. In contrast to Persson's model and in agreement with asperity based models, we demonstrate that at light pressures it is a decreasing convex function. The nonlinearity of the contact area evolution, preserved for the entire range of pressures, is especially strong close to infinitesimal contact. This fact makes difficult an accurate investigation of contact at light pressure and prevents the evaluation of the proportionality coefficient, which is predicted by analytical models. A good agreement of numerical results with Persson's model is obtained for the shape of the area-pressure curve especially near full contact. We investigate the effects of the cutoff wavenumbers in surface spectrum onto the contact area evolution. Nayak's parameter is one of the central characteristics of roughness, it also plays an important role in rough contact mechanics, but its effect is significantly weaker than predicted by asperity based models.
