We develop a new theoretical framework for exploring a mobile impurity interacting strongly with a highly correlated bath of bosons in the quantum critical regime of a Mott insulator (MI) to superfluid (SF) quantum phase transition. Our framework is based on a powerful quantum Gutzwiller (QGW) description of the bosonic bath combined with diagrammatic field theory for the impurity-bath interactions. By resumming a selected class of diagrams to infinite order, a rich picture emerges where the impurity is dressed by the fundamental modes of the bath, which change character from gapped particle-hole excitations in the MI to Higgs and gapless Goldstone modes in the SF. This gives rise to the existence of several quasiparticle (polaron) branches with properties reflecting the strongly correlated environment. In particular, one polaron branch exhibits a sharp cusp in its energy, while a new ground-state polaron emerges at the $O(2)$ quantum phase transition point for integer filling, which reflects the nonanalytic behavior at the transition and the appearance of the Goldstone mode in the SF phase. Smooth versions of these features are inherited in the polaron spectrum away from integer filling because of the varying ``Mottness" of the bosonic bath. We furthermore compare our diagrammatic results with quantum Monte Carlo calculations, obtaining excellent agreement. This accuracy is quite remarkable for such a highly non-trivial case of strong interactions between the impurity and bosons in a maximally correlated quantum critical regime, and it establishes the utility of our framework. Finally, our results show how impurities can be used as quantum sensors and highlight fundamental differences between experiments performed at a fixed particle number or a fixed chemical potential.

We theoretically study stimulated and spontaneous Hawking emission from an analog horizon for spin modes in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate, both with and without a coherent coupling between the two components. We highlight the conceptual and practical advantages that these systems offer to the experimental observation of the phenomenon, namely the massive nature of elementary excitations and the experimental accessibility of the different quadratures of the spin excitations. In particular, we go beyond the relativistic regimes previously addressed in the literature, and identify various observables that show a signature of the Hawking process, as well as additional features associated with the massive nature of the modes, such as undulations. Semi-analytical calculations of the scattering properties of the horizon and of two-point correlation functions of the emitted radiation in an ideal stationary setup are supported by time-dependent numerical simulations based on Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov theory.

We investigate the Doppler effect at zero temperature in superfluids with broken Galilean invariance and hosting permanent currents, with special focus on atomic gas platforms. We consider the case when Galilean invariance is broken explicitly (by an external periodic potential) or spontaneously, as it happens in a supersolid. In the first case, the presence of a stationary current affects the propagation of sound (fourth sound) via an anomalous Doppler term proportional to the density derivative of the superfluid fraction. In supersolids, where, according to Goldstone theorem, distinct sounds of hybrid superfluid and crystal nature can propagate, the Doppler effect can be very different for each sound, including the possibility of being negative for the lower phonon branch. We obtain analytical predictions within the hydrodynamic theories for superfluids and supersolids, which are compared with the numerical results of time-dependent simulations for weakly interacting atomic Bose-Einstein condensates.

Can a gas behave like a crystal? Supersolidity is an intriguing and challenging state of matter which combines key features of superfluids and crystals. Predicted a long time ago, its experimental realization has been recently achieved in Bose-Einstein condensed (BEC) atomic gases inside optical resonators, spin-orbit coupled BEC's and atomic gases interacting with long range dipolar forces. The activity on dipolar gases has been particularly vibrant in the last few years. This perspective article summarizes the main experimental and theoretical achievements concerning supersolidity in the field of dipolar gases, like the observation of the density modulations caused by the spontaneous breaking of translational invariance, the effects of coherence and the occurrence of novel Goldstone modes. A series of important issues for the future experimental and theoretical research are outlined including, among others, the possible realization of quantized vortices inside these novel crystal structure, the role of dimensionality, the characterisation of the crystal properties and the nature of the phase transitions. Quantum Fisher information (QFI) is a central concept in quantum sciences used to quantify the ultimate precision limit of parameter estimation, detect quantum phase transitions, witness genuine multipartite entanglement, or probe nonlocality. Despite this widespread range of applications, computing the QFI value of quantum many-body systems is, in general, a very demanding task. Here we combine ideas from functional theories and quantum information to develop a novel functional framework for the QFI of fermionic and bosonic ground states. By relying upon the constrained-search approach, we demonstrate that the QFI matricial values can universally be determined by the one-body reduced density matrix (1-RDM), avoiding thus the use of exponentially large wave functions. Furthermore, we show that QFI functionals can be determined from the universal 1-RDM functional by calculating its derivatives with respect to the coupling strengths, becoming thus the generating functional of the QFI. We showcase our approach with the Bose-Hubbard model and present exact analytical and numerical QFI functionals. We propose a protocol to excite the Goldstone modes of a supersolid dipolar Bose-Einstein condensed gas confined in a ring geometry. By abruptly removing an applied periodic modulation proportional to cos($\varphi$), where $\varphi$ is the azimuthal angle, we explore the resulting oscillations of the gas, by solving the extended Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The value of the two longitudinal sound velocities exhibited in the supersolid phase are analyzed using the hydrodynamic theory of supersolids at zero temperature. This approach allows for the determination of the layer compressibility modulus as well as of the superfluid fraction $f_S$, in agreement with the Leggett estimate of the non-classical moment of inertia.

In quantum field theory, the decay of an extended metastable state into the real ground state is known as ``false vacuum decay'' and it takes place via the nucleation of spatially localized bubbles. Despite the large theoretical effort to estimate the nucleation rate, experimental observations were still missing. Here, we observe bubble nucleation in isolated and highly controllable superfluid atomic systems, and we find good agreement between our results, numerical simulations and instanton theory opening the way to the emulation of out-of-equilibrium quantum field phenomena in atomic systems., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures

A paramagnetic-ferromagnetic quantum phase transition is known to occur at zero temperature in a two-dimensional coherently-coupled Bose mixture of dilute ultracold atomic gases provided the interspecies interaction strength is large enough. Here we study the fate of such a transition at finite temperature by performing numerical simulations with the stochastic (projected) Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, which includes both thermal and beyond mean-field effects. By extracting the average magnetization, the magnetic fluctuations and characteristic relaxation frequency (or, critical slowing down), we identify a finite temperature critical line for the transition. We find that the critical point shifts linearly with temperature and, in addition, the three quantities used to probe the transition exhibit a temperature power-law scaling. The scaling of the critical slowing down is found to be consistent with thermal critical exponents and is very well approximated by the square of the spin excitation gap at the zero-temperature., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Close to the demixing transition, the degree of freedom associated to relative density fluctuations of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate is described by a non-dissipative Landau-Lifshitz equation. In the quasi one-dimensional weakly immiscible case, this mapping surprisingly predicts that a dark-bright soliton should oscillate when subject to a constant force favoring separation of the two components. We propose a realistic experimental implementation of this phenomenon which we interpret as a spin-Josephson effect in the presence of a movable barrier., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Quantum vortices are often endowed with an effective inertial mass, due, for example, to massive particles in their cores. Such "massive vortices" display new phenomena beyond the standard picture of superfluid vortex dynamics, where the mass is neglected. In this work, we demonstrate that massive vortices are allowed to collide, as opposed to their massless counterparts. We propose a scheme to generate controllable, repeatable, deterministic collisional events in pairs of quantum vortices. We demonstrate two mass-driven fundamental processes: (i) the annihilation of two counter-rotating vortices and (ii) the merging of two co-rotating vortices, thus pointing out new mechanisms supporting incompressible-to-compressible kinetic energy conversion, as well as doubly-quantized vortices stabilization in flat superfluids., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures (+ 2 pages for Supplemental Material)

We investigate the number probability density function that characterizes sub-portions of a quantum many-body system with globally conserved number of particles. We put forward a linear fitting protocol capable of mapping out the ground-state phase diagram of the rich one-dimensional extended Bose-Hubbard model: The results are quantitatively comparable with more sophisticated traditional and machine learning techniques. We argue that the studied quantity should be considered among the most informative bipartite properties, being moreover readily accessible in atomic gases experiments.

Experiments on dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates have recently reported the observation of supersolidity. Although quantized vortices constitute a key probe of superfluidity, their observability in dipolar supersolids is largely prevented by the strong density depletion caused by the formation of droplets. We present a novel approach to the nucleation of vortices and their observation, based on the quenching of the s-wave scattering length across the superfluid-supersolid transition. Starting from a slowly rotating, vortex-free, configuration in the superfluid phase, we predict vortex nucleation as the system enters the supersolid phase, due to the strong reduction of the critical angular velocity in the supersolid. Once a vortex is created, we show that it is robustly preserved when the condensate is brought back to the superfluid phase, where it may be readily observed.

We study the physics of a mobile impurity confined in a lattice, moving within a Bose-Hubbard bath at zero temperature. Within the Quantum Gutzwiller formalism, we develop a beyond-Fr\"ohlich model of the bath-impurity interaction. Results for the properties of the polaronic quasiparticle formed from the dressing of the impurity by quantum fluctuations of the bath are presented throughout the entire phase diagram, focusing on the quantum phase transition between the superfluid and Mott insulating phases. Here we find that the modification of the impurity properties is highly sensitive to the different universality classes of the transition, providing an unambiguous probe of correlations and collective modes in a quantum critical many-body environment.

Despite the paradigmatic nature of the Fermi-polaron model, the theoretical description of its nonlinear dynamics poses challenges. Here, we apply a quantum kinetic theory of driven polarons to recent experiments with ultracold atoms, where Rabi oscillations between a Fermi-polaron state and a non-interacting level were reported. The resulting equations separate decoherence from momentum relaxation, with the corresponding rates showing a different dependence on microscopic scattering processes and quasi-particle properties. We describe both the polaron ground state and the excited repulsive-polaron state and we find a good quantitative agreement between our predictions and the available experimental data without any fitting parameter. We show that the knowledge of the time dependent response of a trapped gas, subject to a sudden rotation of a confining harmonic potential, allows for the determination of the moment of inertia of dipolar supersolid configurations. While in the presence of one-dimensional arrays of droplets the frequency of the resulting scissors oscillation provides accurate access to the value of the moment of inertia, two-dimensional like configurations are characterized by a multi-frequency structure in the rotating signal, reflecting the presence of significant rigid body components in the rotational motion. Using the formalism of response function theory and simulations based on the so-called extended time dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we point out the crucial role played by the low frequency components in the determination of the moment of inertia and of its deviations from the irrotational value. We also propose a protocol based on the stationary rotation of the trap, followed by its sudden stop, which might provide a promising alternative to the experimental evaluation of the moment of inertia.

We report on the experimental measurement of the dispersion relation of the density and spin collective excitation modes in an elongated two-component superfluid of ultracold bosonic atoms. Our parametric spectroscopic technique is based on the external modulation of the transverse confinement frequency, leading to the formation of density and spin Faraday waves. We show that the application of a coherent coupling between the two components reduces the phase symmetry and gives a finite mass to the spin modes., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We investigate the dynamics of heavy impurities embedded in an ultra-cold Fermi gas by using a Generalized Langevin equation. The latter -- derived by means of influence functional theory -- describes the stochastic classical dynamics of the impurities and the quantum nature of the fermionic bath manifests in the emergent interaction between the impurities and in the viscosity tensor. By focusing on the two-impurity case, we predict the existence of bound states, in different conditions of coupling and temperature, and whose life-time can be analytically estimated. We study the effects of quantum fluctuations in the two-component Bose-Hubbard model generalizing to mixtures the quantum Gutzwiller approach introduced recently in [Phys. Rev. Research 2, 033276 (2020)]. As a basis for our study, we analyze the mean-field ground-state phase diagram and spectrum of elementary excitations, with particular emphasis on the quantum phase transitions of the model. Within the quantum critical regimes, we address both the superfluid transport properties and the linear response dynamics to density and spin probes of direct experimental relevance. Crucially, we find that quantum fluctuations have a dramatic effect on the drag between the superfluid species of the system, particularly in the vicinity of the paired and antipaired phases absent in the usual one-component Bose-Hubbard model. Additionally, we analyse the contributions of quantum corrections to the one-body coherence and density/spin fluctuations from the perspective of the collective modes of the system, providing results for the few-body correlations in all the regimes of the phase diagram., Comment: 50 pages, 17 figures

The detection of phase transitions in quantum many-body systems with lowest possible prior knowledge of their details is among the most rousing goals of the flourishing application of machine-learning techniques to physical questions. Here, we train a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) with the Entanglement Spectrum of a system bipartition, as extracted by means of Matrix Product States ans\"atze. We are able to identify gapless-to-gapped phase transitions in different one-dimensional models by looking at the machine inability to reconstruct outsider data with respect to the training set. This paper summarizes some of the relevant features exhibited by bi-nary mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of coherent coupling at zero temperature. The coupling, which is experimentally produced by proper photon transitions, can either involve negligible momentum transfer from the electromagnetic radiation (Rabi coupling) or large momentum transfer (Raman coupling) associated with spin-orbit effects.The nature of the quantum phases exhibited by coherently coupled mixtures is discussed in detail, including their paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and, in the case of spin-orbit coupling, supersolid phases.The behavior of the corresponding elementary excitations is discussed, with explicit emphasis on the novel features caused by the spin-like degree of freedom. Focus is further given to the topological excitations (solitons, vortices) as well as to the superfluid properties. We theoretically calculate and experimentally measure the beyond-mean-field (BMF) equation of state in a coherently-coupled two-component Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the regime where averaging of the interspecies and intraspecies coupling constants over the hyperfine composition of the single-particle dressed state predicts the exact cancellation of the two-body interaction. We show that with increasing the Rabi-coupling frequency $\Omega$, the BMF energy density crosses over from the nonanalytic Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) scaling $\propto n^{5/2}$ to an expansion in integer powers of density, where, in addition to a two-body BMF term $\propto n^2 \sqrt{\Omega}$, there emerges a repulsive three-body contribution $\propto n^3/\sqrt{\Omega}$. We experimentally evidence this two contributions, thanks to their different scaling with $\Omega$, in the expansion of a Rabi-coupled two-component $^{39}$K condensate in a waveguide. By studying the expansion with and without Rabi coupling, we reveal an important feature relevant for observing BMF effects and associated phenomena in mixtures with spin-asymmetric losses: Rabi coupling helps preserve the spin composition and thus prevents the system from drifting away from the point of vanishing mean field.

We report on the experimental characterization of a spatially extended Josephson junction realized with a coherently-coupled two-spin-component Bose-Einstein condensate. The cloud is trapped in an elongated potential such that that transverse spin excitations are frozen. We extract the non-linear parameter with three different manipulation protocols. The outcomes are all consistent with a simple local density approximation of the spin hydrodynamics, i.e., of the so-called Bose-Josephson junction equations. We study the dynamics of a two-level impurity embedded in a two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at zero temperature from an open quantum system perspective. Results for the decoherence across the whole phase diagram are presented, with a focus on the critical region close to the transition between superfluid and Mott insulator. In particular, we show how the decoherence and the deviation from a Markovian behaviour are sensitive to whether the transition is crossed at commensurate or incommensurate densities. The role of the spectrum of the Bose-Hubbard environment and its non-Gaussian statistics, beyond the standard independent boson model, is highlighted. Our analysis resorts on a recently developed method [Phys. Rev. Research 2, 033276 (2020)] - closely related to slave boson approaches - that enables us to capture the correlations across the whole phase diagram. A rich variety of physical effects in spin dynamics arises at the interface between different magnetic materials. Engineered systems with interlaced magnetic structures have been used to implement spin transistors, memories and other spintronic devices. However, experiments in solid state systems can be difficult to interpret because of disorder and losses. Here, we realize analogues of magnetic junctions using a coherently-coupled mixture of ultracold bosonic gases. The spatial inhomogeneity of the atomic gas makes the system change its behavior from regions with oscillating magnetization -- resembling a magnetic material in the presence of an external transverse field -- to regions with a defined magnetization, as in magnetic materials with a ferromagnetic anisotropy stronger than external fields. Starting from a far-from-equilibrium fully polarized state, magnetic interfaces rapidly form. At the interfaces, we observe the formation of short-wavelength magnetic waves. They are generated by a quantum torque contribution to the spin current and produce strong spatial anticorrelations in the magnetization. Our results establish ultracold gases as a platform for the study of far-from-equilibrium spin dynamics in regimes that are not easily accessible in solid-state systems., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

We examine the role of thermal fluctuations in uniform two-dimensional binary Bose mixtures of dilute ultracold atomic gases. We use a mean-field Hartree-Fock theory to derive analytical predictions for the miscible-immiscible transition. A nontrivial result of this theory is that a fully miscible phase at $T=0$ may become unstable at $T\neq0$, as a consequence of a divergent behaviour in the spin susceptibility. We test this prediction by performing numerical simulations with the Stochastic (Projected) Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which includes beyond mean-field effects. We calculate the equilibrium configurations at different temperatures and interaction strengths and we simulate spin oscillations produced by a weak external perturbation. Despite some qualitative agreement, the comparison between the two theories shows that the mean-field approximation is not able to properly describe the behavior of the two-dimensional mixture near the miscible-immiscible transition, as thermal fluctuations smoothen all sharp features both in the phase diagram and in spin dynamics, except for temperature well below the critical temperature for superfluidity., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We theoretically investigate the elusive Andreev-Bashkin collisionless drag for a two-component onedimensional Bose-Hubbard model on a ring. By means of tensor network algorithms, we calculate the superfluid stiffness matrix as a function of intra- and interspecies interactions and of the lattice filling. We then focus on the most promising region close to the so-called pair-superfluid phase, where we observe that the drag can become comparable with the total superfluid density. We elucidate the importance of the drag in determining the long-range behavior of the correlation functions and the spin speed of sound. In this way, we are able to provide an expression for the spin Luttinger parameter $K_S$ in terms of drag and the spin susceptibility. Our results are promising in view of implementing the system by using ultracold Bose mixtures trapped in deep optical lattices, where the size of the sample is of the same order of the number of particles we simulate. Importantly, the mesoscopicity of the system, far from being detrimental, appears to favor a large drag, avoiding the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless jump at the transition to the pair-superfluid phase which would reduce the region where a large drag can be observed., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. A one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate may experience nonlinear periodic modulations known as "cnoidal waves". We argue that such structures represent promising candidates for the study of supersolidity-related phenomena in a non-equilibrium state. A mean-field treatment makes it possible to rederive Leggett's formula for the superfluid fraction of the system and to estimate it analytically. We determine the excitation spectrum, for which we obtain analytical results in the two opposite limiting cases of (i) a linearly modulated background and (ii) a train of dark solitons. The presence of two Goldstone (gapless) modes -- associated with the spontaneous breaking of $\mathrm{U}(1)$ symmetry and of continuous translational invariance -- at large wavelength is verified. We investigate the properties of quantized vortices in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensed gas by means of a generalised Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The size of the vortex core hugely increases by increasing the weight of the dipolar interaction and approaching the transition to the supersolid phase. The critical angular velocity for the existence of an energetically stable vortex decreases in the supersolid, due to the reduced value of the density in the interdroplet region. The angular momentum per particle associated with the vortex line is shown to be smaller than $\hbar$, reflecting the reduction of the global superfluidity. The real-time vortex nucleation in a rotating trap is shown to be triggered, as for a standard condensate, by the softening of the quadrupole mode. For large angular velocities, when the distance between vortices becomes comparable to the interdroplet distance, the vortices are arranged into a honeycomb structure, which coexists with the triangular geometry of the supersolid lattice and persists during the free expansion of the atomic cloud.

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the high-energy excitation spectra of a dipolar supersolid. Using Bragg spectroscopy, we study the scattering response of the system to a high-energy probe, enabling measurements of the dynamic structure factor. We experimentally observe a continuous reduction of the response when tuning the contact interaction from an ordinary Bose-Einstein condensate to a supersolid state. Yet the observed reduction is faster than the one theoretically predicted by the Bogoliubov-de-Gennes theory. Based on an intuitive semi-analytic model and real-time simulations, we primarily attribute such a discrepancy to the out-of-equilibrium phase dynamics, which although not affecting the system global coherence, reduces its response., Comment: 13 pages, 4+10 figures

In this work we are concerned with the understanding of the collisionless drag or entrainment between two superfluids, also called Andreev-Bashkin effect, in terms of current response functions. The drag density is shown to be proportional to the cross transverse current-current response function, playing the role of a normal component for the single species superfluid density. We can in this way link the existence of finite entrainment with the exhaustion of the energy-weighted sum rule in the spin channel. The formalism is then used to reproduce some known results for a weakly interacting Bose-Bose mixture. Finally we include the drag effect to determine the beyond mean-field correction on the speed of sound and on the spin dipole excitations for a homogeneous and trapped gas, respectively., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

Distintictive features of supersolids show up in their rotational properties. We calculate the moment of inertia of a harmonically trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensed gas as a function of the tunable scattering length parameter, providing the transition from the (fully) superfluid to the supersolid phase and eventually to an incoherent crystal of self-bound droplets. The transition from the superfluid to the supersolid phase is characterized by a jump in the moment on inertia, revealing its first order nature. In the case of elongated trapping in the plane of rotation we show that the the moment of inertia determines the value of the frequency of the scissors mode, which is significantly affected by the reduction of superfluidity in the supersolid phase. The case of isotropic trapping is instead well suited to study the formation of quantized vortices, which are shown to be characterized, in the supersolid phase, by a sizeable deformed core, caused by the presence of the sorrounding density peaks., Comment: Improved text and pictures. We theoretically investigate the spin-dipole oscillation of a strongly interacting Fermi gas in a harmonic trap. By using a combined diagrammatic strong-coupling theory with a local density approximation and a sum rule approach, we clarify the temperature dependence of the spin-dipole frequency near the unitarity, which is deeply related to the spin susceptibility, as well as pairing correlations. While the spin-dipole frequency exactly coincides with the trap frequency in a non-interacting Fermi gas, it is shown to remarkably be enhanced in the superfluid state, because of the suppression of the spin degree of freedom due to the spin-singlet Cooper-pair formation. In strongly interacting Fermi gases, this enhancement occurs even above the superfluid phase transition temperature, due to the strong pairing correlations., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

We develop a quantum many-body theory of the Bose-Hubbard model based on the canonical quantization of the action derived from a Gutzwiller mean-field ansatz. Our theory is a systematic generalization of the Bogoliubov theory of weakly-interacting gases. The control parameter of the theory, defined as the zero point fluctuations on top of the Gutzwiller mean-field state, remains small in all regimes. The approach provides accurate results throughout the whole phase diagram, from the weakly to the strongly interacting superfluid and into the Mott insulating phase. As specific examples of application, we study the two-point correlation functions, the superfluid stiffness, the density fluctuations, for which quantitative agreement with available quantum Monte Carlo data is found. A domain wall of relative phase in a flattened harmonically-trapped Bose-Einstein condensed mixture of two atomic hyperfine states, subject to a stationary Rabi coupling of intensity $\Omega$, is predicted to decay through two different mechanisms. For small values of $\Omega$ the instability has an energetic nature and is associated with the formation of a vortex-antivortex pair of the same atomic hyperfine states, whose motion inside the trap causes the emergence of magnetization, the bending of the domain wall and its consequent fragmentation. For large values of $\Omega$ the domain wall instead undergoes a dynamic snake instability, caused by the negative value of its effective mass and results in the fast fragmentation of the wall into smaller domain walls confining vortex pairs of different atomic species. The existence of a paradoxical supersolid phase of matter, possessing the apparently incompatible properties of crystalline order and superfluidity, was predicted 50 years ago. Solid helium was the natural candidate, but there supersolidity has not been observed yet, despite numerous attempts. Ultracold quantum gases have recently shown the appearance of the periodic order typical of a crystal, due to various types of controllable interactions. A crucial feature of a D-dimensional supersolid is the occurrence of up to D+1 gapless excitations reflecting the Goldstone modes associated with the spontaneous breaking of two continuous symmetries: the breaking of phase invariance, corresponding to the locking of the phase of the atomic wave functions at the origin of superfluid phenomena, and the breaking of translational invariance due to the lattice structure of the system. The occurrence of such modes has been the object of intense theoretical investigations, but their experimental observation is still missing. Here we demonstrate the supersolid symmetry breaking through the appearance of two distinct compressional oscillation modes in a harmonically trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, reflecting the gapless Goldstone excitations of the homogeneous system. We observe that the two modes have different natures, with the higher frequency mode associated with an oscillation of the periodicity of the emergent lattice and the lower one characterizing the superfluid oscillations. Our work paves the way to explore the two quantum phase transitions between the superfluid, supersolid and solid-like configurations that can be accessed by tuning a single interaction parameter.

We report on the study of binary collisions between quantum droplets formed by an attractive mixture of ultracold atoms. We distinguish two main outcomes of the collision, i.e. merging and separation, depending on the velocity of the colliding pair. The critical velocity $v_c$ that discriminates between the two cases displays a different dependence on the atom number $N$ for small and large droplets. By comparing our experimental results with numerical simulations, we show that the non-monotonic behavior of $v_c(N)$ is due to the crossover from a compressible to an incompressible regime, where the collisional dynamics is governed by different energy scales, i.e. the droplet binding energy and the surface tension. These results also provide the first evidence of the liquid-like nature of quantum droplets in the large $N$ limit, where their behavior closely resembles that of classical liquid droplets.

We present a strategy based on two-dimensional arrays of coupled linear optical resonators to investigate the two-body physics of interacting bosons in one-dimensional lattices. In particular, we want to address the bound pairs in topologically non-trivial Su-Schrieffer-Heeger arrays. Taking advantage of the driven-dissipative nature of the resonators, we propose spectroscopic protocols to detect and tomographically characterize bulk doublon bands and doublon edge states from the spatially-resolved transmission spectra, and to highlight Feshbach resonance effects in two-body collision processes. We discuss the experimental feasibility using state-of-the-art devices, with a specific eye on arrays of semiconductor micropillar cavities., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures

When the spectrum of magnetic excitations of a quantum mixture is much softer than the density spectrum, the system becomes effectively incompressible and can host magnetic defects. These are characterized by the presence of a topological defect in one of the two species and by a local modification of the density in the second one, the total density being practically unaffected. For miscible mixtures interacting with equal intraspecies coupling constants the width of these magnetic defects is fixed by the difference between the intraspecies and interspecies coupling constants and becomes larger and larger as one approaches the demixing transition. When the density of the filling component decreases, the incompressibility condition breaks down and we predict the existence of a critical filling, below which all the atoms of the minority component remain bound in the core of the topological defect. Applications to the sodium case both in uniform and harmonically trapped configurations are considered and a protocol to produce experimentally these defects is discussed. A recent experiment by P. Bordia et al. (Periodically Driving a Many Body Localized Quantum System, Nat Phys, Jan 2017) has demonstrated that periodically modulating the potential of a localised many-body quantum system described by the Aubry-Andr\'e Hamiltonian with on-site interactions can lead to a many-body localisation-delocalisation transition, provided the modulation amplitude is big enough. Here, we consider the noninteracting counterpart of that model in order to explore its phase diagram as a function of the strength of the disordered potential, the driving frequency and its amplitude. We will first of all mimic the experimental procedure of the experiment and use the even-odd sites imbalance as a parameter in order to discern between different phases. Then we compute the Floquet eigenstates and relate the localisation-delocalisation transition to their Inverse Participation Ratio. Both these approaches show that the delocalisation transition occurs for frequencies that are low compared to the bandwidth of the time independent model. Moreover, in agreement with the results of the experiment there is an amplitude threshold below which no delocalisation transition occurs. We estimate both the critical values for the frequency and the amplitude.

We analyze the dynamics of a set of two-level atoms coupled to the electromagnetic environment within a waveguide. This problem is often tackled by assuming a weak coupling between the atoms and the environment as well as the associated Markov approximation. We show that the accuracy of such an approximation may be more limited than in the single-atom case and also be strongly determined by the presence of collective effects produced by atom-atom interactions. To this aim, we solve the full problem with exact diagonalization and also the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method, and compare the result to that obtained within a weak-coupling master equation and with the Dicke approximation. Finally, we study the dynamics of the entanglement within the system when considering several inter-atomic distances and atomic frequencies.

We study the low-energy excitations of the Bose-Hubbard model in the strongly-interacting superfluid phase using a Gutzwiller approach and extract the single-particle and single-hole excitation amplitudes for each mode. We report emergent mode-dependent particle-hole symmetry on specific arc-shaped lines in the phase diagram connecting the well-known Lorentz-invariant limits of the Bose-Hubbard model. By tracking the in-phase particle-hole symmetric oscillations of the order parameter, we provide an answer to the long-standing question about the fate of the pure amplitude Higgs mode away from the integer-density critical point. Furthermore, we point out that out-of-phase oscillations are responsible for a full suppression of the condensate density oscillations of the gapless Goldstone mode. We study a mixture of two superfluids with density-density and current-current (Andreev-Bashkin) interspecies interactions. The Andreev-Bashkin coupling gives rise to a dissipationless drag (or entrainment) between the two superfluids. Within the quantum hydrodynamics approximation, we study the relations between speeds of sound, susceptibilities and static structure factors, in a generic model in which the density and spin dynamics decouple. Due to translational invariance, the density channel does not feel the drag. The spin channel, instead, does not satisfy the usual Bijl-Feynman relation, since the f-sum rule is not exhausted by the spin phonons. The very same effect on one dimensional Bose mixtures and their Luttinger liquid description is analysed within perturbation theory. Using diffusion quantum Monte Carlo simulations of a system of dipolar gases in a double layer configuration, we confirm the general results. Given the recent advances in measuring the counterflow instability, we also study the effect of the entrainment on the dynamical stability of a superfluid mixture with non-zero relative velocity., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We study the ground state and excitations of a one-dimensional trapped polarized Fermi gas interacting with a single impurity. First, we study the tunnelling dynamics of the impurity through a potential barrier, such as one effectively created by a double-well trap. To this end, we perform an exact diagonalization of the full few-body Hamiltonian and analyze the results in a Local Density Approximation. Off-diagonal and one-particle correlation matrices are studied and are shown to be useful for discerning between different symmetries of the states. Second, we consider a radio-frequency (RF) spectroscopy of our system and the resulting spectral function. We study the bosonic two-body problem in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger dimerized chain with on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions. We find two classes of bound states. The first, similar to the one induced by on-site interactions, has its center of mass on the strong link, whereas the second, existing only thanks to nearest-neighbors interactions, is centered on the weak link. We identify energy crossings between these states and analyse them using exact diagonalization and perturbation theory. In the presence of open boundary conditions, novel strongly-localized edge-bound states appear in the spectrum as a consequence of the interplay between lattice geometry, on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions. We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy to investigate a polarized spin-mixture of ultracold ${}^6$Li atoms close to a broad Feshbach scattering resonance. Focusing on the regime of strong repulsive interactions, we observe well-defined coherent quasiparticles even for unitarity-limited interactions. We characterize the many-body system by extracting the key properties of repulsive Fermi polarons: the energy $E_+$, the effective mass $m^*$, the residue $Z$ and the decay rate $\Gamma$. Above a critical interaction, $E_+$ is found to exceed the Fermi energy of the bath while $m^*$ diverges and even turns negative, thereby indicating that the repulsive Fermi liquid state becomes energetically and thermodynamically unstable., Comment: 6 + 12 pages, 4 + 6 figures, 57 references

We study the decay rate $\Gamma(k)$ of density excitations of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates at zero temperature. Those excitations, where the two components oscillate in phase, include the Goldstone mode resulting from condensation. While within Bogoliubov approximation the density sector and the spin (out-of-phase) sector are independent, they couple at the three-phonon level. For a Bose-Bose mixture we find that the Belyaev decay is slightly modified due to the coupling with the gapless spin mode. At the phase separation point the decay rate changes instead from the standard $k^5$ to a $k^{5/2}$ behaviour due to the parabolic nature of the spin mode. In presence of coherent coupling between the two components the spin sector is gapped and, away from the ferromagnetic-like phase transition point, the decay of density mode is not affected. On the other hand at the transition point, when the spin fluctuations become critical, the Goldstone mode is not well defined anymore since $\Gamma(k)\propto k$. As a consequence, we show that the friction induced by a moving impurity is enahnced -- a feature which could be experimentally tested. Our results apply to every non-linear 2-component quantum hydrodynamic Hamiltonian which is time-reversal invariant, and possesses an $U(1)\times {\mathbf Z}_2$ symmetry.
