Abstract Hybrid materials taking advantage of the different physical properties of materials are highly attractive for numerous applications in today's science and technology. Here, it is demonstrated that epitaxial bi‐domain III–V/Si are hybrid structures, composed of bulk photo‐active semiconductors with 2D topological semi‐metallic vertical inclusions, endowed with ambipolar properties. By combining structural, transport, and photoelectrochemical characterizations with first‐principle calculations, it is shown that the bi‐domain III–V/Si materials are able within the same layer to absorb light efficiently, separate laterally the photo‐generated carriers, transfer them to semimetal singularities, and ease extraction of both electrons and holes vertically, leading to efficient carrier collection. Besides, the original topological properties of the 2D semi‐metallic inclusions are also discussed. This comb‐like heterostructure not only merges the superior optical properties of semiconductors with good transport properties of metallic materials, but also combines the high efficiency and tunability afforded by III–V inorganic bulk materials with the flexible management of nano‐scale charge carriers usually offered by blends of organic materials. Physical properties of these novel hybrid heterostructures can be of great interest for energy harvesting, photonic, electronic or computing devices.

The best solar conversion efficiencies have been reached thanks to multijunction solar based on III-V semiconductors on GaAs or Ge substrates. While displaying high conversion efficiencies, these solar cells suffer from the high cost of such substrates. To benefit from both the low cost and technological maturity of silicon cells, III-V tandem cells on silicon seem a good compromise to overpass the theoretical efficiency limit of the Si single cells. To study the GaP/Si interface effect on the solar cell characteristic, a GaP n-i-p solar cell has been grown on silicon substrate. Two types of electrical contacts configurations have been processed: a top-top configuration in which the current does not see the GaP/Si interface and the top-bottom configuration where the electric current crosses the interface. A comparison of dark I-V, I-V under solar illumination, and EQE measurements on both configurations is performed. The top-bottom contacts configuration shows an EQE a little bit lower than the top-top contact one, likely due to lower carrier diffusion length or recombination at the lower interface. However, the result on the EQE of the top-bottom configuration is encouraging for the future development of the GaP-based/Si tandem solar cells, and any other tandem cell on silicon using GaP as an intermediate selective contact.

Ameloblastoma is a rare benign epithelial odontogenic neoplasm, but with great clinical implications, as despite its benignity and slow growth, most cases are locally aggressive with a significant recurrence rate. Histological, cellular, or molecular analyses of its pathogenesis have confirmed the complexity of this neoplasm. We present the case of a 20-year-old patient with a suggestive clinical and radiographic diagnosis of ameloblastoma. An incisional biopsy was obtained confirming the diagnosis of conventional ameloblastoma. Left hemimandibulectomy and plate reconstruction were performed. Histopathological analysis of the surgical specimen confirmed the conventional ameloblastoma with a plexiform pattern and significant areas of cystic degeneration and amyloid-like-like deposits. Additionally, a microarray was carried out with bioinformatic analysis for the enrichment, protein interaction, and determination of eight hub genes (CRP, BCHE, APP, AKT1, AGT, ACTC1, ADAM10, and APOA2) related to their pathogenesis.

The Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) consists of more than 30 monostatic high‐frequency (HF, 8–20 MHz) radars to study dynamic processes in the ionosphere. SuperDARN provides maps of global‐scale ionospheric plasma drift circulation from the mid‐latitudes to the poles. The conventional SuperDARN radars consecutively scan through 16 beam directions with a lower limit of 1 minute to sample the entire field of view. In this work, we use the advanced capabilities of the recently developed Borealis digital SuperDARN radar system. Combining a wide transmission beam with multiple narrow reception beams allows us to sample all conventional beam directions simultaneously and to speed up scanning of the entire field‐of‐view by up to 16 times without noticeable deterioration of the data quality. The wide‐beam emission also enabled the implementation of multistatic operations, where ionospheric scatter signals from one radar are received by other radars with overlapping viewing areas. These novel operations required the development of a new model to determine the geographic location of the source of the multistatic radar echoes. Our preliminary studies showed that, in comparison with the conventional monostatic operations, the multistatic operations provide a significant increase in geographic coverage, in some cases nearly doubling it. The multistatic data also provide additional velocity vector components, increasing the likelihood of reconstructing full plasma drift velocity vectors. The developed operational modes can be readily implemented at other fully digital SuperDARN radars. Plain Language Summary: The Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) consists of more than 30 high‐frequency (HF, 8–20 MHz) radars that observe the ionized part of the Earth's atmosphere to study Space Weather phenomena, like magnetic storms and the aurora. Each SuperDARN radar transmits a radio wave at a particular frequency and receives the returns scattering from ionized structures. The returns are analyzed to extract information about processes in near‐Earth space. Conventionally, these radars scan 16 azimuthal directions consecutively, dwelling for 3.5 s in each direction, which restricts a scan of the field‐of‐view to 1 minute. In this work, we use a recently developed digital SuperDARN radar system called Borealis to shorten the scan duration by an order of magnitude by illuminating the whole field of view with a broad transmitter beam and receiving radar returns from all 16 directions simultaneously using narrow receiver beams. We also implemented a technique to receive signals sent from one radar by other radars with overlapping viewing areas. This provides a significant increase (nearly doubles) the geographic area of coverage, compared with using the same radar for both transmission and reception. A 6-year-old mixed-breed male Papillon dog, castrated at the age of 7 months, presented for work-up of a difficulty walking associated with constipation and urinary incontinence. Ultrasonography and radiography were consistent with a tumor of the prostate and lymph node metastases. An irregular osteoproliferation of the ventral edges of L5–L6–L7 suggested tumor invasion. Periosteal proliferative lesions of the pelvis, the femur, the humerus, the tibia and the calcaneus were consistent with hypertrophic osteopathy. Necropsy and histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of prostatic adenocarcinoma with lymph node, pulmonary, liver and bone metastases, associated with hypertrophic osteopathy.

In this work, we demonstrate how the classical concept of band gap engineering usually used in III–V semiconductor devices can be extended to the engineering of the band lineup between semiconducting photoelectrodes and electrolytes. The performances of photoelectrodes made of GaP1−xAsx epilayers in the full compositional range and grown on low-cost Si substrates were studied and compared with those of photoelectrodes grown on GaAs and GaP substrates. We first show that the changes of incident photon to current conversion efficiency (IPCE) with the As content in GaP1−xAsx alloys are related to the band gap nature (direct or indirect) and band gap energy variations. Then, from flat band potential measurements during Mott–Schottky experiments, valence and conduction band energies of GaP1−xAsx alloys are positioned versus the reversible hydrogen potential. A weak change of conduction band energies and a large evolution of valence band energies are obtained, in good agreement with expected theoretical trends. Such results show that both band gaps and semiconductor/electrolyte band lineups can be engineered through alloying of III–V semiconductors deposited on silicon substrates. This band lineup engineering strategy is expected to be of great interest to address specific redox reactions in the electrolyte, provided that suitable protecting or passivating layers can be used to limit surface/interface recombinations. Numerous genetic polymorphisms have been identified as associated with disease or treatment outcome, but the routine implementation of genotyping into actionable medical care remains limited. Point-of-care (PoC) technologies enable rapid and real-time treatment decisions, with great potential for extending molecular diagnostic approaches to settings with limited medical infrastructure (e.g., CLIA certified diagnostic laboratories). With respect to resource-limited settings, there is a need for simple devices to implement biomarker guided treatment strategies. One relevant example is chronic hepatitis C infection, for which several treatment options are now approved. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the IL-28B / IFNL3 locus have been well described to predict both spontaneous clearance and response to interferon based therapies. We utilized the Genedrive® platform to develop an assay for the SNP rs12979860 variants (CC, CT and TT). The assay utilizes a hybrid thermal engine, permitting rapid heating and cooling, enabling an amplification based assay with genetic variants reported using endpoint differential melting cure analysis in less than 60 minutes. We validated this assay using non-invasive buccal swab sampling in a prospective study of 246 chronic HCV patients, achieving 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity (95% exact CI: 98.8-100%)) in 50 minutes as compared to conventional lab based PCR testing. Our results provide proof of concept that precision medicine is feasible in resource-limited settings, offering the first CE-IVD (in vitro diagnostics) validated PoC SNP test. We propose that IL-28B genotyping may be useful for directing patients towards lower cost therapies, and rationing use of costly direct antivirals for use in those individuals showing genetic risk.
