for each squarefree monomial ideal I ⊂ S = k[x1, …, xn], we associate a simple finite graph GI by using the first linear syzygies of I. The nodes of GI are the generators of I, and two vertices ui and uj are adjacent if there exist variables x, y such that xui = yuj. In the cases, where GI is a cycle or a tree, we show that I has a linear resolution if and only if I has linear quotients and if and only if I is variable-decomposable. In addition, with the same assumption on GI, we characterize all squarefree monomial ideals with a linear resolution. Using our results, we characterize all Cohen-Macaulay codimension 2 monomial ideals with a linear resolution. As another application of our results, we also characterize all Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes in the case, where $${G_{\rm{\Delta }}} \cong {G_{{I_{\rm{\Delta }}} \vee }}$$ is a cycle or a tree.

Let \(\Delta \) be a simplicial complex on vertex set \([n]\). It is shown that if \(\Delta \) is complete intersection, Cohen–Macaulay of codimension 2, Gorenstein of codimension 3, or 2-Cohen–Macaulay of codimension 3, then \(\Delta \) is vertex decomposable. As a consequence, we show that if \(\Delta \) is a simplicial complex such that \(I_\Delta = I_t(C_n)\), where \(I_t(C_n)\) is the path ideal of length \(t\) of \(C_n\), then \(\Delta \) is vertex decomposable if and only if \(t=n, t=n-1\), or \(n\) is odd and \(t=(n-1)/2\).

In this paper we introduce a family of monomial ideals with the persistence property. Given positive integers $n$ and $t$, we consider the monomial ideal $I=Ind_t(P_n)$ generated by all monomials $\textbf{x} ^F$, where $F$ is an independent set of vertices of the path graph $P_n$ of size $t$, which is indeed the facet ideal of the $t$-th skeleton of the independence complex of $P_n$. We describe the set of associated primes of all powers of $I$ explicitly. It turns out that any such ideal $I$ has the persistence property. We give a new characterization for prime filtrations of an R-module M in terms of primary decomposition of the zero submodule of M. Using this characterization we prove that some classes of monomial ideals like generic and cogeneric monomial ideals are clean, pretty clean, or almost clean.

In analogy to the skeletons of a simplicial complex and their Stanley–Reisner ideals we introduce the skeletons of an arbitrary monomial ideal I ⊂ S = K [x1, …, xn ]. This allows us to compute the depth of S /I in terms of its skeleton ideals. We apply these techniques to show that Stanley's conjecture on Stanley decompositions of S /I holds provided it holds whenever S /I is Cohen–Macaulay. In this paper we study how prime filtrations and squarefree Stanley decompositions of squarefree modules over the polynomial ring and over the exterior algebra behave with respect to Alexander duality. The results which we obtained suggest a lower bound for the regularity of a \({\mathbb {Z}^n}\)-graded module in terms of its Stanley decompositions. For squarefree modules this conjectured bound is a direct consequence of Stanley’s conjecture on Stanley decompositions. We show that for pretty clean rings of the form R/I, where I is a monomial ideal, and for monomial ideals with linear quotient our conjecture holds.

Let $\Delta$ be a pure simplicial complex and $I_\Delta$ its Stanley-Reisner ideal in a polynomial ring $S$. We show that $\Delta$ is a matroid (complete intersection) if and only if $S/I_\Delta^{(m)}$ ($S/I_\Delta^m$) is clean for all $m\in\mathbb{N}$. If $\dim(\Delta)=1$, we also prove that $S/I_\Delta^{(2)}$ ($S/I_\Delta^2$) is clean if and only if $S/I_\Delta^{(2)}$ ($S/I_\Delta^2$) is Cohen-Macaulay.

Let $K$ be a field and $S=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$. Let $I$ be a monomial ideal of $S$ and $u_1,\ldots, u_r$ be monomials in $S$ which form a filter-regular sequence on $S/I$. Let $K$ be a field and $I$ a monomial ideal of the polynomial ring $S=K[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$. We show that if either: 1) $I$ is almost complete intersection, 2) $I$ can be generated by less than four monomials; or 3) $I$ is the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a locally complete intersection simplicial complex on $[n]$, then Stanley's conjecture holds for $S/I$., Comment: To appear in Kodai Mathematical Journal, 7 pages

As a generalization of the facet ideal of a forest, we define monomial ideal of forest type and show that monomial ideals of forest type are pretty clean. As a consequence, we show that if I is a monomial ideal of forest type in the polynomial ring S, then Stanley's decomposition conjecture holds for S/I. The other main result of this article shows that a clutter is totally balanced if and only if it has the free vertex property, and which is also equivalent to say that its edge ideal is a monomial ideal of forest type or is generated by an M sequence.

We study Stanley decompositions and show that Stanley's conjecture on Stanley decompositions implies his conjecture on partitionable Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. We also prove these conjectures for all Cohen-Macaulay monomial ideals of codimension 2 and all Gorenstein monomial ideals of codimension 3., Comment: 10 pages

We show that all monomial ideals in the polynomial ring in at most 3 variables are pretty clean and that an arbitrary monomial ideal $I$ is pretty clean if and only if its polarization $I^p$ is clean. This yields a new characterization of pretty clean monomial ideals in terms of the arithmetic degree, and it also implies that a multicomplex is shellable if and only the simplicial complex corresponding to its polarization is (non-pure) shellable. We also discuss Stanley decompositions in relation to prime filtrations.
