5. Intergenerational Exchange: Undergraduate Researchers' Learning and Listening Enhanced through Older Adults' Entertainment Preferences

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to provide an intergenerational exchange as undergraduate students taking an introductory Psychology of Aging course, interviewed and watched films with older adult participants (N = 13) residing in an assisted living community. The undergraduate researchers (N = 10) conducted and transcribed interviews, wrote about their perceptions of interviews and film viewing with older adults, and their instructor interviewed assisted living staff (N = 2) creating an assessment of participants, researchers, and staff. Researchers listened and learned from older adult's words, thereby improving researchers' understanding that older adults preferred in-person discussions over film viewing. Researchers learned from older adults' words, as they began to understand that sexual content in today's films may reduce entertainment viewing for youth and older adults. Older adults described television remotes and phones with frustration and researchers felt angst for their frustration. Findings suggested understanding and meaning for participants and researchers in this service learning intergenerational exchange generated through undergraduate research.

Abstract

The energy resolution of a highly granular 1 m3 analogue scintillator-steel hadronic calorimeter is studied using charged pions with energies from 10 GeV to 80 GeV at the CERN SPS. The energy resolution for single hadrons is determined to be approximately 58%/sqrt(E/GeV}. This resolution is improved to approximately 45%/sqrt(E/GeV) with software compensation techniques. These techniques take advantage of the event-by-event information about the substructure of hadronic showers which is provided by the imaging capabilities of the calorimeter. The energy reconstruction is improved either with corrections based on the local energy density or by applying a single correction factor to the event energy sum derived from a global measure of the shower energy density. The application of the compensation algorithms to Geant4 simulations yield resolution improvements comparable to those observed for real data., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

The CALICE collaboration is studying the design of high performance electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters for future International Linear Collider detectors. For the hadronic calorimeter, one option is a highly granular sampling calorimeter with steel as absorber and scintillator layers as active material. High granularity is obtained by segmenting the scintillator into small tiles individually read out via silicon photo-multipliers (SiPM). A prototype has been built, consisting of thirty-eight sensitive layers, segmented into about eight thousand channels. In 2007 the prototype was exposed to positrons and hadrons using the CERN SPS beam, covering a wide range of beam energies and incidence angles. The challenge of cell equalization and calibration of such a large number of channels is best validated using electromagnetic processes. The response of the prototype steel-scintillator calorimeter, including linearity and uniformity, to electrons is investigated and described.

Abstract

A prototype silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter for an ILC detector was tested in 2007 at the CERN SPS test beam. Data were collected with electron and hadron beams in the energy range 8 to 80 GeV. The analysis described here focuses on the interactions of pions in the calorimeter. One of the main objectives of the CALICE program is to validate the Monte Carlo tools available for the design of a full-sized detector. The interactions of pions in the Si-W calorimeter are therefore confronted with the predictions of various physical models implemented in the GEANT4 simulation framework.

Abstract

This paper describes an experimental setup that has been developed to measure and characterise properties of Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM). The measured SiPM properties are of general interest for a multitude of potential applications and comprise the Photon Detection Efficiency (PDE), the voltage dependent cross-talk and the after-pulse probabilities. With the described setup the absolute PDE can be determined as a function of wavelength covering a spectral range from 350 to 1000nm. In addition, a method is presented which allows to study the pixel uniformity in terms of the spatial variations of sensitivity and gain. Abstract

An analog hadron calorimeter (AHCAL) prototype of 5.3 nuclear interaction lengths thickness has been constructed by members of the CALICE Collaboration. The AHCAL prototype consists of a 38-layer sandwich structure of steel plates and highly-segmented scintillator tiles that are read out by wavelength-shifting fibers coupled to SiPMs. The signal is amplified and shaped with a custom-designed ASIC. A calibration/monitoring system based on LED light was developed to monitor the SiPM gain and to measure the full SiPM response curve in order to correct for non-linearity. Ultimately, the physics goals are the study of hadron shower shapes and testing the concept of particle flow. The technical goal consists of measuring the performance and reliability of 7608 SiPMs. The AHCAL was commissioned in test beams at DESY and CERN. Abstract

The main challenges posed by the design of future Positron Emission Tomography machines are the improvement of the spatial and timing resolution and the combined operation with magnetic resonance. The Micro Pixel Photon Counter by Hamamatsu is a good candidate for this application. Its small size (down to 1 mm2) and the high photo-detection efficiency in the blue spectral region allow the direct readout of a highly segmented scintillator matrix improving the spatial resolution of the machine. Furthermore, this photo-detector is insensitive to static magnetic fields up to 5 T, which makes it a possible candidate for applications in a magnetic resonance environment, though tests in a fast changing gradient field need still to be performed. The aim of this study is the characterization of a system composed by a scintillator crystal readout via a MPPC. Crystals of 1x1x15 mm3 and 3x3x15 mm3 are directly coupled to a MPPC of the same size active area and the energy resolution at 511 keV is measured. The coincidence time resolution of two so assembled detector units is measured. A first comparison of the performances of LSO and LFS crystals is given., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Justificativa e objetivos: A Doença Pulmonar Obstrutiva Crônica (DPOC) é um problema de saúde pública e tem recebido crescente atenção nos últimos anos. Buscouse avaliar qual a proporção dos pacientes que internaram por cardiopatia isquêmica (CI) tinham história de exposição a fatores de risco e/ou haviam sido diagnosticados como portadores de DPOC. Métodos: estudo transversal, observacional, do tipo prospectivo. Foram selecionados todos os pacientes, acima de 18 anos, lúcidos e que concordaram em participar do estudo, internados no período de setembro de 2014 a junho de 2015, com o diagnóstico de CI. Os dados analisados foram analisados no programa SPSS 22.0. Resultados: foram incluídos 69 pacientes que internaram com diagnóstico de CI nos anos de 2014 e 2015. A média de idade dos pacientes foi de 65 anos e destes, 35 (50,7%) eram do sexo masculino. A média da duração de internação desses pacientes foi de 3 dias. Os pacientes que apresentavam diagnóstico de DPOC e estavam em tratamento eram 6 (8,69%), e os que haviam realizado espirometria prévia totalizavam 5 (7,24%). Quanto às manifestações respiratórias nos pacientes com CI, 25 pacientes (64,1%) apresentavam tosse, expectoração ou dispneia. Houve um relato de 8,7% dos pacientes já terem sido diagnosticados previamente como portadores de DPOC. Conclusões: Apesar da alta prevalência de sintomas respiratórios e exposição a fatores de risco, pacientes com DPOC tem maior número de eventos e maior mortalidade por cardiopatia isquêmica, nosso estudo sugere que existe uma alta porcentagem de subdiagnóstico de DPOC em pacientes internados por cardiopatia isquêmica em nosso meio.portadores de DPOC. Conclusões: Apesar da alta prevalência de sintomas respiratórios e exposição a fatores de risco, pacientes com DPOC tem maior número de eventos e maior mortalidade por cardiopatia isquêmica, nosso estudo sugere que existe uma alta porcentagem de subdiagnóstico de DPOC em pacientes internados por cardiopatia isquêmica em nosso meio. Abstract

Objective: To report the results of a workshop regarding asthma management programs and centers (AMPCs) in Brazil, so that they can be used as a tool for the improvement and advancement of current and future AMPCs. Methods: The workshop consisted of five presentations and the corresponding group discussions. The working groups discussed the following themes: implementation of asthma management strategies; human resources needed for AMPCs; financial resources needed for AMPCs; and operational maintenance of AMPCs. Results: The workshop involved 39 participants, from all regions of the country, representing associations of asthma patients (n = 3), universities (n = 7), and AMPCs (n = 29). We found a direct relationship between a lack of planning and the failure of AMPCs. Based on the experiences reported during the workshop, the common assumptions about AMPCs in Brazil were the importance of raising awareness of managers; greater community participation; interdependence between primary care and specialized care; awareness of regionalization; and use of medications available in the public health system. Conclusions: Brazil already has a core of experience in the area of asthma management programs. The implementation of strategies for the management of chronic respiratory disease and their incorporation into health care system protocols would seem to be a natural progression. However, there is minimal experience in this area. Joint efforts by individuals with expertise in AMPCs could promote the implementation of asthma management strategies, thus speeding the creation of treatment networks, which might have a multiplier effect, precluding the need for isolated centers to start from zero.

Clodius' Poetik ist die erste Ästhetik, die die Gattung Oper im Kontext des "Romantischen" systematisch aufarbeitet. Clodius knüpft in seiner Argumentation an den Diskurs der rationalistischen Regelpoetik Bodmers und Breitingers an und versucht das Unwahrscheinliche, Unwirkliche, sprich das Wunderbare und Romantische, im Drama durch die Musik zu rechtfertigen: Das Zusammentreten von dramatischer Rede und Musik wird durch einen "romantischen" Stoff allein gerechtfertigt, weshalb die Oper sui generis eine "romantische" Gattung genannt wird. Clodius Poetik belegt, wie der Begriff des "Romantischen" zu Anfang des 19. Jh.s vom literarischen an den musikalischen Diskurs angekoppelt worden ist. Clodius Poetik belegt ferner einen popularästhetischen "Romantik"-Begriff, der für die ersten Jahrzehnte des 19. Jh.s. maßgeblich geworden ist.

Abstract

Background The Brazilian population has a tri-hybrid composition with a high degree of ethnic admixture. We hypothesized that Brazilian individuals with CF from different Brazilian regions have a specific distribution of CFTR variants. Methods Individuals with CF with data available in the Patient Registry and without an established genotype were submitted to CFTR sequencing by Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) methodology, and results were anonymously incorporated to the Registry Database. Genotyping results were expressed as ‘positive’, ‘inconclusive’ or ‘negative’. Logistic regression models were performed to investigate the association between demographic/clinical variables and genotyping results. Mediation analysis was conducted to estimate direct and indirect effects of Brazilian region on a binary positive genotyping response. Results In October 2017, data from 4,654 individuals with CF were available, and 3,104(66.7%) of them had a genotyping result. A total of 236 variants (114 new variants) were identified, with F508del identified in 46% of the alleles tested. Genotyping revealed 2,002(64.5%) individuals positive, 757(24.4%) inconclusive and 345(11.1%) negative. Distribution of genotype categories was markedly different across Brazilian Regions, with greater proportions of negative individuals in the North (45%) and Northeast (26%) regions. Newborn screening (CF-NBS) and age at diagnosis were identified as mediators of the effect of Brazilian region on a positive genotyping result. Conclusions This large initiative of CFTR genotyping showed significant regional discrepancies in Brazil, probably related to socio-economic conditions, lack of adequate CF-NBS and poor access to reliable sweat testing. These results may be useful to indicate Regions where CF care demands more attention.

OBJETIVO: Avaliar a contribuição de um novo coeficiente, a razão FEF50%/0,5CVF, medida através da curva fluxo-volume máximo expiratório, no diagnóstico dos distúrbios ventilatórios obstrutivos (DVOs); testar esse coeficiente na diferenciação entre grupos de pacientes normais, com DVO e com distúrbio ventilatório restritivo (DVR); e estabelecer pontos de corte para cada um dos diagnósticos funcionais e a probabilidade para cada diagnóstico a partir de valores individuais. MÉTODOS: Estudo transversal, prospectivo, com a análise de testes de função pulmonar de 621 pacientes encaminhados ao Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre entre janeiro a dezembro de 2003. Foram coletados dados demográficos e espirométricos. Os pacientes foram divididos conforme o diagnóstico funcional em três grupos: normal; DVO; e DVR. Foram calculadas as razões VEF1/CVF e FEF50%/0,5CVF, e as médias de FEF50%/0,5CVF foram comparadas entre os grupos. Para correlacionar FEF50%/0,5CVF com VEF1/CVF, utilizou-se a correlação de Pearson. Os pacientes foram, então, divididos em dois grupos: com e sem DVO. Foram calculadas as razões de verossimilhança para diferentes pontos de corte. RESULTADOS: A média de idade dos pacientes foi de 55,8 ± 14,7 anos. Houve diferenças significativas nos valores médios de FEF50%/0,5CVF entre os grupos (2,10 ± 0,82, 2,55 ± 1,47 e 0,56 ± 0,29, respectivamente, para normal, DVR e DVO; p < 0,001). Houve uma correlação positiva do FEF50%/0,5CVF com VEF1/CVF no grupo DVO (r = 0,83). Valores de FEF50%/0,5CVF < 0,79 mostraram-se fortes indicadores de DVO e valores > 1,33 praticamente afastam esse diagnóstico. CONCLUSÕES: A razão FEF50%/0,5CVF é um parâmetro potencialmente útil para discriminar DVOs, correlacionando-se positivamente com o VEF1/CVF.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the contribution of a new coefficient, the FEF50%/0.5FVC ratio, obtained from the maximal expiratory flow-volume curve, to the diagnosis of obstructive lung disease (OLD); to test this coefficient in differentiating among patients considered normal, those with OLD and those with restrictive lung disease (RLD); and to determine cut-off points for each functional diagnosis, as well as the probability for each diagnosis based on individual values. METHODS: A prospective, cross-sectional study analyzing the pulmonary function of patients referred to the Porto Alegre Hospital de Clínicas, in Porto Alegre, Brazil, between January and December of 2003. We collected demographic and spirometric data. The patients were divided into three groups: normal; OLD; and RLD. We calculated the FEV1/FVC and FEF50%/0.5FVC ratios, and we compared the mean FEF50%/0.5FVC values among the groups. We used Pearson's correlation test in order to compare FEF50%/0.5FVC with FEV1/FVC. The patients were again divided into two groups: those with OLD and those without OLD. We calculated the likelihood ratio for different cut-off points. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients was 55.8 ± 14.7 years. There were significant differences among the groups in terms of the mean FEF50%/0.5FVC (2.10 ± 0.82, 2.55 ± 1.47 and 0.56 ± 0.29, respectively, for normal, RLD and OLD; p < 0.001). There was a positive correlation between FEF50%/0.5FVC and FEV1/FVC in the OLD group (r = 0.83). We found that an FEF50%/0.5FVC < 0.79 strongly suggests OLD, whereas an FEF50%/0.5FVC > 1.33 practically excludes this diagnosis. CONCLUSIONS: The FEF50%/0.5FVC ratio is a potentially useful parameter in the differential diagnosis of OLD and correlates positively with the FEV1/FVC ratio.
