We report here on results of systematic experimental-theoretical investigation of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in layers of CdSe semiconductor quantum dots of different sizes and a reference bulk CdSe thin film. We observe a strong decrease in the efficiency, up to complete suppression of HHG with energies of quanta above the band gap for the smallest dots, whereas the intensity of below band gap harmonics remains weakly affected by the dot size. In addition, it is observed that the suppression of the above gap harmonics is enhanced with increasing the driving wavelength. These systematic investigations allow us to develop a simple physical picture explaining the observed suppression of the highest harmonics: the discretization of electronic energy levels seems to be not the predominant contribution to the observed suppression but rather the confined dot size itself, causing field-driven electrons to scatter off the dot's walls. The reduction in the dot size below the classical electron oscillatory radius and the corresponding scattering limits the maximum acceleration by the laser field. Moreover, this scattering leads to a chaotization of motion, causing dephasing and a loss of coherence, therefore suppressing the efficiency of the emission of highest-order harmonics. Our results demonstrate a regime of intense laser-nanoscale solid interaction, intermediate between the bulk and single-molecule response, and are crucial for nanophotonic platforms aiming at control over high-order harmonic properties and efficiency.

We discuss kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of carbon steel corrosion in CO2-containing NaCl fluids up to 240 °C. Crystalline nm-thick Fe-oxide films only form at 160 °C and 240 °C providing instantaneous and moderate corrosion protection. The absence of Fe-oxide at 80 °C results in high initial corrosion rates until a moderately protective, but thick and porous, FeCO3 film forms. From the metal/film interface it grows inwards by replacing ferrite with FeCO3. TEM reveals a precursory, likely hydrated and chloride-containing, phase that predates FeCO3 formation. Thermodynamic predictions agree well with experimental results in that Fe-oxide formation is favored over FeCO3 towards higher temperatures.

Porous platinum is a frequently used electrocatalyst and thermoelectric material, but the growth mechanism of nanopores in platinum layers is still not fully understood. Here, the authors show that hydrogen is not involved in the reduction process of PtCl4, however it enables the formation of nanopores.

Embedding quantum dots into porous matrices is a very beneficial approach for generating hybrid nanostructures with unique properties. In this contribution we explore strategies to dope nanoporous SiO2 thin films made by atomic layer deposition and selective wet chemical etching with precise control over pore size with CdSe quantum dots. Two distinct strategies were employed for quantum dot deposition: in situ growth of CdSe nanocrystals within the porous matrix via successive ionic layer adsorption reaction, and infiltration of pre-synthesized quantum dots. To address the impact of pore size, layers with 10 nm and 30 nm maximum pore diameter were used as the matrix. Our results show that though small pores are potentially accessible for the in situ approach, this strategy lacks controllability over the nanocrystal quality and size distribution. To dope layers with high-quality quantum dots with well-defined size distribution and optical properties, infiltration of preformed quantum dots is much more promising. It was observed that due to higher pore volume, 30 nm porous silica shows higher loading after treatment than the 10 nm porous silica matrix. This can be related to a better accessibility of the pores with higher pore size. The amount of infiltrated quantum dots can be influenced via drop-casting of additional solvents on a pre-drop-casted porous matrix as well as via varying the soaking time of a porous matrix in a quantum dot solution. Luminescent quantum dots deposited via this strategy keep their luminescent properties, and the resulting thin films with immobilized quantum dots are suited for integration into optoelectronic devices. Understanding the martensitic microstructure in nickel–titanium (NiTi) thin films helps to optimize their properties for applications in microsystems. Epitaxial and single-crystalline films can serve as model systems to understand the microstructure, as well as to exploit the anisotropic mechanical properties of NiTi. Here, we analyze the growth of NiTi on single-crystalline MgO(100) and Al _2 O _3 (0001) substrates and optimize film and buffer deposition conditions to achieve epitaxial films in (100)- and (111)-orientation. On MgO(100), we compare the transformation behavior and crystal quality of (100)-oriented NiTi films on different buffer layers. We demonstrate that a vanadium buffer layer helps to decrease the low-angle grain boundary density in the NiTi film, which inhibits undesired growth twins and leads to higher transformation temperatures. On Al _2 O _3 (0001), we analyze the orientation of a chromium buffer layer and find that it grows (111)-oriented only in a narrow temperature range around 500 ^∘ C. By depositing the Cr buffer below the NiTi film, we can prepare (111)-oriented, epitaxial films with transformation temperatures above room temperature. Transmission electron microscopy confirms a martensitic microstructure with Guinier Preston-zone precipitates at room temperature. We identify the deposition conditions to approach the ideal single crystalline state, which is beneficial for the analysis of the martensitic microstructure and anisotropic mechanical properties in different film orientations.

Ion irradiation can cause burrowing of nanoparticles in substrates, strongly depending on the material properties and irradiation parameters. In this study, it is demonstrated that the sinking process can be accomplished with ion irradiation of cube‐shaped Ag nanoparticles on top of silicon; how ion channeling affects the sinking rate; and underline the importance of the amorphous state of the substrate upon ion irradiation. Based on these experimental findings, the sinking process is described as being driven by capillary forces enabled by ion‐induced plastic flow of the substrate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
