Aim: assessment of the impact of biological therapy on risk factors for postoperative complications. Materials and methods: the study included 116 patients operated on for Crohn's disease. The mean age of the patients was 38.2 years, among them 65 men (56 %) and 51 women (44 %). The influence of various factors on complications in the postoperative period was analyzed using the IBM-SPSS software for Mac version 22.0 and Microsoft Excel 1997-2003. Results: 32.7 % of the patients received biological therapy, and postoperative complications developed in 31 % of the operated patients. There was no association between receiving biological therapy and the risk of postoperative complications. The risk factor was the formation of a stoma and surgery for emergency indications. Conclusion: an important task before surgical treatment for Crohn's disease is a thorough preoperative preparation and assessment of all risk factors for complications of surgical intervention by a multidisciplinary team.

Background: the most common surgical intervention for complicated forms of Crohn's disease is ileocecal resection. This operation is performed in a planned manner with the ineffectiveness of conservative therapy. Also, the operation is performed according to emergency indications with the development of intestinal obstruction or septic complications. In the vast majority of cases, it is possible to perform a laparoscopic approach, thereby reducing the risks of complications and accelerating the recovery of the patient in the postoperative period.Aim: evaluation of the results of laparoscopic ileocecal resection in patients with Crohn's diseaseMaterials and methods: the study included 46 patients (21 women, 25 men) who underwent laparoscopic ileocecal resection for the stricture form of Crohn's disease. 18 patients were operated on for emergency indications, 28 – for planned indications. The mean age was 37.6 year.Results: conversion to laparotomy was performed in 4 patients (8.7%). The mean operative time was 128.2 minutes. Complications that required reoperation were in 3 patients (6.5%). 4 patients (8.7%) had purulent-septic wound complications.Conclusion: laparoscopic ileocecal resection for stricture Crohn's disease is a simple, easily reproducible operation, both in planned surgical interventions and in emergency cases.

We present the results of the luminescence response studies of a single YVO4:Yb, Er particle of 1-µm size. Yttrium vanadate nanoparticles are well-known for their low sensitivity to surface quenchers in water solutions which makes them of special interest for biological applications. First, YVO4:Yb, Er nanoparticles (in the size range from 0.05 µm up to 2 µm), using the hydrothermal method, were synthesized. Nanoparticles deposited and dried on a glass surface exhibited bright green upconversion luminescence. By means of an atomic-force microscope, a 60 × 60 µm2 square of a glass surface was cleaned from any noticeable contaminants (more than 10 nm in size) and a single particle of 1-µm size was selected and placed in the middle. Confocal microscopy revealed a significant difference between the collective luminescent response of an ensemble of synthesized nanoparticles (in the form of a dry powder) and that of a single particle. In particular, a pronounced polarization of the upconversion luminescence from a single particle was observed. Luminescence dependences on the laser power are quite different for the single particle and the large ensemble of nanoparticles as well. These facts attest to the notion that upconversion properties of single particles are highly individual. This implies that to use an upconversion particle as a single sensor of the local parameters of a medium, the additional studying and calibration of its individual photophysical properties are essential.

This article presents a modern possibilities and future path of prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) radiopharmacuticals labeled by 99mTc, that is the most popular isotope using in conventional nuclear medicine. The main advantages and disadvantages of SPECT/CT with these radiopharmaceuticals in different phases of prostate cancer continuum have been analyzed. Results of research diagnostic sensitivity of 99mTc-PSMA SPECT/CT including comparison with 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT and conventional modality such as MRI and bone scan are presented. The prerequisites of application 99mTc-labeled PSMA ligands in PSMA-guided surgery, methodology of PSMA-guided surgery and foreign authors application experience are presented in this article too.

At the joint between the membrane and hydrophilic arms of the enzyme, the structure of the respiratory complex I reveals a tunnel-like Q-chamber for ubiquinone binding and reduction. The narrow entrance of the quinone chamber located in ND1 subunit forms a bottleneck (eye of a needle) which in all resolved structures was shown to be too small for a bulky quinone to pass through, and it was suggested that a conformational change is required to open the channel. The closed bottleneck appears to be a well-established feature of all structures reported so-far, both for the so-called open and closed states of the enzyme, with no indication of a stable open state of the bottleneck. We propose a squeeze-in mechanism of the bottleneck passage, where dynamic thermal conformational fluctuations allow quinone to get in and out. Here, using molecular dynamics simulations of the bacterial enzyme, we have identified collective conformational changes that open the quinone chamber bottleneck. The model predicts a significant reduction—due to a need for a rare opening of the bottleneck—of the effective bi-molecular rate constant, in line with the available kinetic data. We discuss possible reasons for such a tight control of the quinone passage into the binding chamber and mechanistic consequences for the quinone two-electron reduction. Taxonomic spectra, i.e. relations between supraspecific taxa by the number of included species, remain poorly understood in aspect of the mathematical properties. We studied taxonomic spectra of plants (Magnoliophyta, Bryophyta), animals (Coleoptera, Aves), fungi (Agaricomycetes) and terrestrial protists (Myxomycetes), found in the Homilsha Forests National Nature Park (North-East of Ukraine), and concluded that they correspond to the hollow-curve distribution at the level of genera, families and orders. The spectra of most taxa, as shown by the Akaike information criterion, are closely approximated by the log-series distribution model at all taxonomic levels. This type of distribution is typical for the species abundance curves, based on collections made from small areas. At the same time, in the genera–families–orders row the similarity to the lognormal distribution increases. The central values and variability vary considerably between different taxonomic groups and ranks, however, without affecting the type of distribution. The number of orders in all taxa except Bryophyta has reached the saturation and coincides with the curve of the estimated number of orders according to the Chao1 coefficient. For families and especially genera the correspondence with estimated number of species is much lower. Our results do not confirm the assumption that hollow-curve distributions of taxonomic spectra result from the artificial fragmentation of taxa. These distributions neither depend on the insufficient knowledge about the species composition at the locality, nor reflect the size of the studied area. The presence of such distributions in both local and global biota of different groups may be explained by the common features of their evolution, especially by the existence of relict orphan groups. The fact that in Homilsha Forests the kurtosis and skewness of distributions decreases in the genera–families–orders row can therefore be explained by the relatively low percentage of the high-rank orphan taxa in the local biota. This may be a common feature of communities studied at small geographical scale, since orphan taxa often demonstrate a high level of endemism. Comparative studies of local communities from different climate zones may help to understand how universal are the patterns, described herein.

We present a workflow for efficient barcoding of myxomycete fructifications, which (i) requires less than 1000 spores, (ii) allows to collect spores with only a needle, (iii) works without any commercial kits, and (iv) is optimized for the use of 96-well PCR plates throughout the process. Specimens of 291 dark-spored nivicolous myxomycetes and 121 bright-spored members of the Trichiaceae were sequenced for the barcode marker 18S rDNA (SSU) with a low rate of failure and no detectable cross-contamination. Crude DNA extracts can be stored for further analyses: the elongation factor 1 alpha gene (EF1A), a single-copy marker, was successfully amplified after four weeks of storage.As such our procedure will allow a time- and cost-efficient barcoding of large series of specimens.

YVO4:Yb,Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are synthesized to study the possibility of using them as nanoprobes to solve biological problems. Aqueous colloidal solutions of UCNPs are injected into the bodies of grape snails. When preparations from animal organs are irradiated with a continuous wave (CW) laser at a wavelength of 980 nm, luminescence is observed in the region of 520–560 nm, due to radiative transitions in Er3+ ions. A comparative analysis of the behavioral activity of animals with injected nanoparticles and control animals with no nanoparticles reveals no signs of toxicity. The nanoparticles are promising as luminescence nanoprobes in biological problems.

Nanoparticles of YVO4 doped with Yb3+ and Er3+ ions, which exhibit upconversion luminescence upon cw laser excitation at 980 nm, are synthesized according to the familiar hydrothermal procedure. Physical and structural features of intermediate products obtained at different technological stages of creating upconversion nanoparticles are established via electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and luminescence microscopy.

The preferred method in detection and staging of chronic radiation proctitis is colonoscopy. Moreover, endoscopy is used widely in treating patients with this disease. The main goal of endoscopic techniques is hemostasis and elimination of vascular transformations. This includes formalin application, band ligation, various types of laser irradiation, bipolar coagulation and cryotherapy. However, these methods are associated with relatively high risk of complications, whereas argon plasma coagulation and radiofrequency ablation are effective, relatively safe techniques for chronic radiation proctitis and well tolerated by patients.

Hybrid materials designed for the regeneration of bone defects and consisting of a resorbable ceramic base (tricalcium phosphate, TCP) coated with a layer of hydrophilic biodegradable polymer have been developed. Biocompatibility of the ceramics was evaluated through in vitro tests using cultures of human skin fibroblasts. To increase the therapeutic potential, the created model structures were saturated with the antitumor drug doxorubicin within the composition of the coating of UV-polymerizable hydrogel based on polyacrylamide/polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PAA/PEGDA). The kinetics of drug release was studied by spectrophotometry using saline. The studied hybrid constructs had low cytotoxicity. Saturation of the structures with the antitumor drug resulted in its prolonged release. The results demonstrate the technological feasibility of creating osteoconductive implants based on calcium phosphates suitable for local delivery of antitumor drugs.

Practical geomechanics is based on an integrated approach, which assumes involving the results of geological, seismological, geophysical and other observations in order to increase the reliability of analytical solutions and to ensure the completeness and quality of interpretation of instrumental control data. The paper provides an example of the implementation of such an approach. When assessing the stress-strain state of the Nizhnekansky region, information on the geological characteristics of the object, as well as data on seismicity and seismotectonic deformations of the Earth’s crust in the Altai - Sayan region and Baikal rift zone were used. As a result of a systematic integrated analysis of geological and seismotectonic information, it was found that junction of the Siberian platform and the West Siberian plate in the area of Nizhnekansky granitoid massif should be related to a region with an average degree of tectonic activity. The territory of the right bank of the Yenisei is characterized by a regional compression field of near-latitudinal orientation. The results of instrumental stress control by hydraulic fracturing method in local zones of the rock mass at a depth of 260 m are presented. It is determined that the rock mass has a significant margin of safety with respect to the parameters of active stress field.

This article provides an overview of the main literature data of biochemical basics and the clinical application of positron emission tomography, one of the promising technologies of radiation imaging in oncology.In the final part, the biokinetics of radiopharmaceuticals that display the proliferative activity of malignant cells and the degree of hypoxia in the tumor focus are examined in detail. The results of studies devoted to assessing their effectiveness, the main indications for their use, the features of preparation for the study, as well as promising scientific developments in this industry are presented.

Within the myxomycetes, phylogenetic research is still at a relatively early stage, and available phylogenies are often based on only a single or a few marker genes. According to the available data, the “true” myxomycetes (exosporous, myxogastric) form a monophyletic clade within the phylum Eumycetozoa with two basal subclades, a dark-spored (treated as the Columellomycetidae) and a bright-spored (the subclass Lucisporomycetidae). Within the first subclade the main evolutionary branches are recognized as the orders Echinosteliales, Echinosteliopsidales, Clastodermatales, Meridermatales, Stemonitidales, and Physarales; for the bright-spored subclade, these are the orders Cribrariales, Reticulariales, Liceales, and Trichiales. In the light of molecular data the traditional criteria used in myxomycete taxonomy have to be reevaluated. The morphology of capillitia and peridia, and especially how these two structures are connected to each other in a particular taxon, seems to be highly informative, whereas their presence or absence is not. Similarly, single versus compound fruiting bodies, a character often used to delimit genera, seems to deserve a lower weight, as these structures have evolved several times in parallel. Many, especially species rich, genera seem not to represent monophyletic units, and further research will most likely change their delimitation.

Unlike standard nanodiamonds (NDs), boron-doped nanodiamonds (BNDs) have shown great potential in heating a local environment, such as tumor cells, when excited with NIR lasers (808 nm). This advantage makes BNDs of special interest for hyperthermia and thermoablation therapy. In this study, we demonstrate that the negatively charged color center (NV) in lightly boron-doped nanodiamonds (BNDs) can optically sense small temperature changes when heated with an 800 nm laser even though the correct charge state of the NV is not expected to be as stable in a boron-doped diamond. The reported BNDs can sense temperature changes over the biological temperature range with a sensitivity reaching 250 mK/√Hz. These results suggest that BNDs are promising dual-function bio-probes in hyperthermia or thermoablation therapy as well as other quantum sensing applications, including magnetic sensing.
