1. A general relationship between population size and extinction risk

Abstract

Understanding the relationship between a population's probability of extinction and its carrying capacity is key in assessing conservation status, and critical to efforts to understand and mitigate the ongoing biodiversity crisis. Despite this, there has been limited research into the form of this relationshop. We conducted around five billion population viability assessments which reveal that the relationship is a modified Gompertz curve. This finding is consistent across around 1700 individual model populations, which between them span different breeding systems and widely varying rates of population growth, levels of environmental stochasticity, adult survival rate, age at first breeding and starting population size. Applying analytical methods to equations describing population dynamics showed that minimal assumptions were required to prove this is a general relationship whichholds for any extant population subject to density dependant growth. Finally, we discuss the implications of these finds and consider the practical use of our results by conservationists.

2. Derivation of Hartree theory for two-dimensional attractive Bose gases in very dilute regime

Abstract

We study the ground state energy of trapped two-dimensional Bose gases with mean-field type interactions that can be attractive. We prove the stability of second kind of the many-body system and the convergence of the ground state energy per particle to that of a non-linear Schr\"odinger (NLS) energy functional. Notably, we can take any polynomial scaling of the interaction, and even some exponential scaling, which is a drastic improvement on the best-known result for systems with attractive interactions. As a consequence of the stability of second kind we also obtain Bose-Einstein condensation for the many-body ground states for a much improved range of the diluteness parameter., Comment: 16 pages

3. Dissipation-dispersion analysis of fully-discrete implicit discontinuous Galerkin methods and application to stiff hyperbolic problems

Abstract

The application of discontinuous Galerkin (DG) schemes to hyperbolic systems of conservation laws requires a careful interplay between the space discretization, carried out with local polynomials and numerical fluxes at inter-cells, and a high-order time-integration to yield the final update. An important concern is how the scheme modifies the solution through the notions of numerical diffusion and dispersion. The analysis of these artifacts is well known for finite volume schemes, but it becomes more complex in the DG case. In particular, as far as we know, no analysis of this type has been considered for implicit integration with DG space discretization. The first part of this work intends to fill this gap, showing that the choice of the implicit Runge-Kutta scheme impacts deeply on the quality of the solution. We analyze dispersion-diffusion properties to select the best combination of the space-time discretization for high Courant numbers. In the second part of this work, we apply our findings to the integration of stiff hyperbolic systems with DG schemes. Implicit time-integration schemes leverage superior stability properties enabling the selection of time-steps based solely on accuracy requirements, thereby bypassing the need for minute time-steps. High-order schemes require the introduction of local space limiters which make the whole implicit scheme highly nonlinear. To mitigate the numerical complexity of these schemes, we propose to use appropriate space limiters that can be precomputed on a first-order prediction of the solution. This approach follows the methodology proposed by Puppo et al. (Commun. Comput. Phys., 2024) for high-order finite volume schemes. Numerical experiments explore the performance of this technique on scalar equations and systems.

4. Ground state energy of a dilute Bose gas with three-body hard-core interactions

Abstract

We consider a gas of bosons interacting through a three-body hard-core potential in the thermodynamic limit. We derive an upper bound on the ground state energy of the system at the leading order using a Jastrow factor. Our result matches the lower bound proven by Nam-Ricaud-Triay and therefore resolves the leading order. Moreover, a straightforward adaptation of our proof can be used for systems interacting via combined two-body and three-body interactions to generalise Theorem 1.2. from arXiv:2402.05646 to hard-core potentials.

Abstract

Residual deep neural networks are formulated as interacting particle systems leading to a description through neural differential equations, and, in the case of large input data, through mean-field neural networks. The mean-field description allows also the recast of the training processes as a controllability problem for the solution to the mean-field dynamics. We show theoretical results on the controllability of the linear microscopic and mean-field dynamics through the Hilbert Uniqueness Method and propose a computational approach based on kernel learning methods to solve numerically, and efficiently, the training problem. Further aspects of the structural properties of the mean-field equation will be reviewed.

Abstract We give an introduction to several regularization schemes that deal with ultraviolet and infrared singularities appearing in higher-order computations in quantum field theories. Comparing the computation of simple quantities in the various schemes, we point out similarities and differences between them.

17. Ground state energy of the low density Bose gas with two-body and three-body interactions

Abstract

In the present paper we study the low density Bose gas in the thermodynamic limit interacting via two-body and three-body interaction potentials. We prove that the leading order of the ground state energy is entirely characterised by both the scattering length of the two-body potential and the scattering energy of the three-body potential. The corresponding result for two-body interactions was proven in seminal papers of Dyson (1957) and of Lieb-Yngvason (1998), and the result for three-body interactions was proven by Nam-Ricaud-Triay. The present result resolves a conjecture of Nam-Ricaud-Triay.

Abstract

Abstract Background Around five billion people globally lack access to safe, timely, and affordable surgical facilities and care in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Global initiatives have been launched, including efforts led by organizations. Also, regional efforts have shed light on the unique challenges faced by different areas within LMICs. Despite these efforts, many countries still face significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited availability of trained surgical personnel, lack of essential medical equipment, and insufficient financial resources allocated to healthcare and their related possible factors. Here is that we aim to identify the progress made in areas such as capacity building, training programs, infrastructure development, and policy reforms, as well as highlight the gaps that persist, providing a foundation for future research. Such a comprehensive scoping review will be crucial to enhance surgical care services and ultimately improve health outcomes in LMICs. Methods A comprehensive literature search up to November 2024 will be conducted across six major databases. PubMed, Scopus, Ovoid, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) database. The methodology will follow the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) Checklist. The first version of this project will not include a quality appraisal.

Abstract

Background: Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is a severe Feeding and Eating Disorder (FED) that is more prevalent in females, often manifesting during adolescence. Recent research highlights an elevated presence of comorbid Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) traits among individuals with AN, with specific expressions in females accounting for sensorial and interoceptive experiences. This study retrospectively explores the association between ASD traits, eating symptomatology, and interoceptive deficits in Italian female adolescents with AN. Methods: A retrospective evaluation of female AN/Atypical AN patients (n = 52) aged 13–17 years was conducted at two university pediatric hospitals in Italy. The participants underwent neuropsychiatric assessments, including the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2), and measurement of ASD traits with the Autism-spectrum quotient (AQ), camouflaging ASD traits Questionnaire (CAT-Q), Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), and FED-symptomatology-related measures. Results: Overall, 9.6% of the participants exhibited an ADOS-2 clinical impression consistent with ASD. Higher scores in AQ and CAT-Q revealed ASD traits and camouflaging strategies. The interoceptive deficits positively correlated with the ASD traits, alexithymia, and camouflage, and TAS—Difficulty Identifying Feelings emerged as the sole predictor for interoceptive deficits. Discussion: This Italian study preliminarily underscores the importance of recognizing ASD traits in the AN population, emphasizing early intervention strategies. The intersection of alexithymia and interoceptive deficits emerges as a crucial nexus between ASD and AN, with potential therapeutic implications.

Abstract

Many interesting physical problems described by systems of hyperbolic conservation laws are stiff, and thus impose a very small time-step because of the restrictive CFL stability condition. In this case, one can exploit the superior stability properties of implicit time integration which allows to choose the time-step only from accuracy requirements, and thus avoid the use of small time-steps. We discuss an efficient framework to devise high order implicit schemes for stiff hyperbolic systems without tailoring it to a specific problem. The nonlinearity of high order schemes, due to space- and time-limiting procedures which control nonphysical oscillations, makes the implicit time integration difficult, e.g.~because the discrete system is nonlinear also on linear problems. This nonlinearity of the scheme is circumvented as proposed in (Puppo et al., Comm.~Appl.~Math.~\& Comput., 2023) for scalar conservation laws, where a first order implicit predictor is computed to freeze the nonlinear coefficients of the essentially non-oscillatory space reconstruction, and also to assist limiting in time. In addition, we propose a novel conservative flux-centered a-posteriori time-limiting procedure using numerical entropy indicators to detect troubled cells. Abstract

For close to 2 years, we have witnessed the impacts of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on research at several different levels. Among the list, limited access to laboratory-based training for undergraduate students prevented this cohort from gaining exposure to the realities of a research laboratory at a critical time in training when they may have found motivation in this area as a career. COVID exposed a weakness in our training pipeline; an extreme dependency on face-to-face training that threatened to create a void in the research talent needed to replenish the scientific community every year. In the classroom, we witnessed a revolution of e-learning based approaches that could be rapidly implemented based on existing footprints. Out of necessity, our laboratory developed and implemented an e-learning model of an undergraduate peer mentor network that provides a knowledge and experience exchange platform between students with different levels of research experience. Implementation of the platform was to aid students with gaining knowledge in multiple aspects of scientific research and hands-on work in a research laboratory. The collaboration between the students of the network was aimed at not only advancing the theoretical and practical research experience, but also at developing feedback implementation and practicing "soft skills" critical for teamwork and leadership. Herein, we present an overview of the model along with survey responses of the students participating in the peer mentor network. We have found that peer delivery of practical benchwork both via scientific presentations and visualized experiments, reduced the time of training and the amount of staff assistance needed when students returned to the bench. Furthermore, this model accelerated student independence in laboratory work and increased research interest overall. In summary, the model of a peer mentor network has the potential to serve as a training platform and as a customized tool, supplementing research laboratory training at the undergraduate level beyond the pandemic.

38. Assessment Selection for Latine Dual Language Learners' Math Skills

Abstract

Background: Gaps between dual language learners (DLLs) and monolingual English-speaking children have been reported at kindergarten entry, and many DLL children are classified as long-term English learners, having less access to the general curriculum in the upper grades (NASEM, 2017). The supposed underperformance of DLLs might be due to the language in which they are assessed based on the assumption that the language systems are overlapping and the dominant one for general language ability should account for all knowledge in the specific domain areas. This is although long-standing evidence had shown that DLLs process language thorough a shared conceptual system (Mancilla-Martinez et al., 2021). Despite the extent of literature regarding assessment selections for DLLs, most of the research has focused on literacy and reading outcomes (e.g., NASEM, 2017), leaving the consideration of other domains, such as mathematics, highly unexplored. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine whether Latine DLL's early mathematics performance is impacted by the language in which they were assessed (e.g., assessed in English or Spanish based on the preLAS score). Language screener tests have been used to assess DLLs' English proficiency. Head Start uses the Preschool Language Assessment Survey (preLAS, 2000; Duncan & De Avila, 1998) as the screener test to assess DLLs' English proficiency through receptive and expressive language measures. Performance on the preLAS determines children's direct assessment language path (e.g., primarily assessed in English or Spanish). The hypothesis for our study is not straightforward, given that children who passed the preLAS should apparently have the required proficiency to succeed in assessments in English (Thordardottir et al., 2006). However, before elementary school, DLLs might simultaneously develop their vocabulary in both languages, which argues against using one specific language at this age. Setting: This study uses the Head Start Family and Child Experiences Survey (FACES) from 2014 and 2019. Population: The total sample of FACES 2014 is 2,462 children in 60 Head Start programs; of those, 865 were Hispanic/Latino/a based on the child race/ethnicity report provided by parents. Children were between 3 and 5 years old at the time of data collection (M[subscript months] = 48.11; SD = 7.00), and 49.64% were female. A total of 615 children spoke Spanish at home, which is the sample used in this study. The total sample of FACES 2019 is 2,260 children in 59 Head Start programs; of those, 768 were Hispanic/Latino/a based on the child race/ethnicity report provided by parents. Children were between 3 and 5 years old at the time of data collection (M[subscript months] = 47.39; SD = 6.78), and 49.1% were female. A total of 559 children spoke Spanish at home, which is the sample used in this study. Research Design: We use a regression discontinuity design (RDD). Studying the effects of assessing Latine DLLs in English and/or Spanish is a difficult task since students taking the exam in English might differ across multiple unobserved characteristics from students taking the exam in Spanish. An RDD mitigates the concerns about unobserved characteristics (Cattaneo et al., 2021). The rationale in an RDD is that units are assigned to different groups (i.e., treatment and control group) based on their position on a scale or their ranking on a score. The RDD takes advantage of this since an arbitrary cutoff decides who goes to what group. A key consequence is that at the cutoff, the only thing experimenting with a drastic change is the treatment status but not the students' characteristics, which in this study is children's score on the "pre"LAS test. The outcome on this study is Latine DLLs performance in the Woodcock-Johnson III Applied Problems/Woodcock Muñoz Problemas Aplicados assessment. Analysis: We used the language screening assessment (i.e., preLAS) to compare Latine DLLs just above and just below the "cutpoint" that defines whether the math assessment was administered in English or Spanish. In FACES, children scoring eight or more points (out of 20) in the "pre"LAS took the assessments in English, and children scoring less than 8 points took the assessments in Spanish. We transformed this variable, so the cutoff was equal to zero, and -1 means to be 1 point below the cutoff (administered in Spanish), and 1 means to be 1 point above the cutoff (administered in English). The unit of analysis is Latine DLLs; the "pre"LAS is used to define whether children are in treatment or control group, and the outcome is the result of the math assessment. We use a RDD to estimate the effect of taking the math assessment in English by comparing children who were just below the cutoff in the "pre"LAS (control group: took the assessment in Spanish) and children that were just above the cutoff (treatment group: took the assessment in English). Findings: The results show that taking the mathematics assessment in English reduced the score by 1.53 standard deviation units in FACES 2014. This result replicates for FACES 2019, showing that Latine DLLs who took the mathematics assessment in English performed 0.69 standard deviation units lower than those who took the mathematics assessment in Spanish. Thus, Latine DLLs that did pass the preLAS and took the Woodcock-Johnson III Applied Problem in English performed lower than Latine DLLs that did not pass the preLAS and took the Woodcock Muñoz Problemas Aplicados in Spanish, both in FACES 2014 and 2019. Those results are frightening, showing that Latine DLLs are being restricted by the language assessment path. Conclusions: DLL Spanish-English-children bring immense linguistic and cultural assets to schools and communities (Callahan & Gándara, 2014). Yet, this population is widely considered among the most vulnerable of learners (NASEM, 2017). These vulnerabilities are driven by structural inequalities (Umansky & Porter, 2020), such as curriculum design and reliance on assessments that do not reflect Latine DLLs' cultural and linguistic resources, as it is shown by our results. This study will provide the groundwork for meaningful change in policy and practice.

40. Towards Data Redaction in Bitcoin

Abstract

A major issue for many applications of blockchain technology is the tension between immutability and compliance to regulations. For instance, the GDPR in the EU requires to guarantee, under some circumstances, the right to be forgotten. This could imply that at some point one might be forced to delete some data from a locally stored blockchain, therefore irreparably hurting the security and transparency of such decentralized platforms. Motivated by such data protection and consistency issues, in this work we design and implement a mechanism for securely deleting data from Bitcoin blockchain. We use zero-knowledge proofs to allow any node to delete some data from Bitcoin transactions, still preserving the public verifiability of the correctness of the spent and spendable coins. Moreover, we specifically use STARK proofs to exploit the transparency that they provide. Our solution, unlike previous approaches, avoids the complications of asking nodes to reach consensus on the content to delete. In particular, our design allows every node to delete some specific data without coordinating this decision with others. In our implementation, data removal can be performed (resp., verified) in minutes (resp., seconds) on a standard laptop rather than in days as required in previous designs based on consensus.

Abstract

In this paper we introduce a multistep generalization of the guess-and-determine or hybrid strategy for solving a system of multivariate polynomial equations over a finite field. In particular, we propose performing the exhaustive evaluation of a subset of variables stepwise, that is, by incrementing the size of such subset each time that an evaluation leads to a polynomial system which is possibly unfeasible to solve. The decision about which evaluation to extend is based on a preprocessing consisting in computing an incomplete Grobner basis after the current evaluation, which possibly generates linear polynomials that are used to eliminate further variables. If the number of remaining variables in the system is deemed still too high, the evaluation is extended and the preprocessing is iterated. Otherwise, we solve the system by a complete Grobner basis computation. Having in mind cryptanalytic applications, we present an implementation of this strategy in an algorithm called MultiSolve which is designed for polynomial systems having at most one solution. We prove explicit formulas for its complexity which are based on probability distributions that can be easily estimated by performing the proposed preprocessing on a testset of evaluations for different subsets of variables. We prove that an optimal complexity of MultiSolve is achieved by using a full multistep strategy with a maximum number of steps and in turn the standard guess-and-determine strategy, which essentially is a strategy consisting of a single step, is the worst choice. Finally, we extensively study the behaviour of MultiSolve when performing an algebraic attack on the well-known stream cipher Trivium., Comment: 29 pages. Abstract

Soil Electrical conductivity (EC) is a measure of the ability of soil to conduct an electric current, which is primarily influenced by the concentration of soluble salts in the soil solution that takes place principally through water-filled pores. Ions (Ca2+, Mg 2+, K +, Na +, and NH 4+, SO42-, Cl-, NO3–, and HCO3–) from soluble salts dissolved in soil water carry electrical charges and conduct the electrical current. EC is considered a proxy of soil salinity and other soil characteristics, whose monitoring is much needed in the context of climate change, increasing irrigation in agricultural areas and sea level rise. The pan-European LUCAS soil monitoring scheme, established in 2009, provided EC1:5 in the topsoil (0–20 cm) in the surveys of the years 2015 and 2018 for almost 20,000 samples. In this work, using the LUCAS 2018 dataset, we provide an empirically-derivedpedotransfer function to convert diluted EC1:5 to saturated ECe using the LUCAS soil texture and soil organic carbon, and a framework for ECe mapping with a machine-learning algorithm named Quantile Regression Forest. The final model resulted in an R2 of 0.302 with an RMSE of 0.265 dS m−1 for soil samples not used for model calibration. The results are presented as predicted ECe in the topsoil, and they reveal that in Atlantic and Northern Europe, salts may accumulate in soils through several natural processes, i.e., primary salinization, but in Mediterranean and Southern Europe, they accumulate because of human interventions on the soil water and solute regimes. Among these interventions, seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers, irrigation with waters containing soluble salts, poor drainage of irrigated lands and of naturally saline soils, stand out. Hotspot analysis per country or Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS 0) revealed high topsoil ECe levels occurred in Spain 0.11 %. Increasing ECe can led to constrained crop productivity in irrigated farming. With this assessment, we try to determine the hotspots for future monitoring and understanding the main drivers for sustainable soil management. Future challenges for ECe mapping that need to be address are sample numerosity and depth and availability of a consistent set of ECe data measured to provide a regression based PTF for the use of diluted EC1:5.

44. National and subnational plans for primary prevention and early detection of oral and oropharyngeal cancer: a scoping review

Abstract

This scoping review maps primary prevention and early detection strategies for oral and oropharyngeal cancer across national cancer plans and noncommunicable disease plans from all World Health Organization Member States. Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, bibliographic search was performed on key organization websites until March 2023. Of the 194 countries assessed three had subnational plans, resulting in 264 self-governing political entities and similar with revised plans. Among these, 124 (47%) addressed oral and oropharyngeal cancer risk factors and preventive strategies, including 73 national and 51 subnational plans (one from Australia, two from the United Kingdom and 48 from the United States) across 76 (39.2%) countries. Southeast Asia led with 81.8% self-governing political entities mentioning oral and oropharyngeal cancer risk factors and preventive strategies, followed by the Americas (63.5%). Western Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean regions had the lowest coverage with 24.2% and 23.8%, respectively. Tobacco use was the most discussed oral and oropharyngeal cancer risk factor in primary prevention plans (63.7%), followed by HPV infection (54%) and alcohol consumption (35.5%). Opportunistic examination was the most common strategy for early detection, recommended by 29% of self-governing political entities, followed by screening in high-risk individuals (14.5%), self-examination (5.6%), and population-based screening (2.4%). Despite the high oral and oropharyngeal cancer incidence in many countries, most cancer plans only indirectly covered it and showed a great diversity of preventive strategies. Missing data in available documents should not imply an absence of an oral and oropharyngeal cancer policy. Other documents may exist but were not available on the websites, highlighting potential bias.
