Aerosol particles in the atmosphere interact with solar radiation through scattering and absorption. Accurate aerosol optical properties are needed to reduce the uncertainties of climate predictions. The aerosol optical properties can be obtained via optical modeling based on the measured particle size distribution. This approach requires knowledge or assumptions on the particle refractive index and shape. Meanwhile, integrating nephelometry provides information on the aerosol scattering properties directly. However, their measurements are affected by angular non-idealities, and their data need to be corrected for angular truncation and illumination to provide the particle scattering coefficient. We performed an extensive closure study, including a laboratory and a simulated experiment, aiming to compare different nephelometer angular truncation and illumination corrections (further referred to as “angular corrections”). We focused on coarse-mode irregularly shaped aerosols, such as mineral dust, a worldwide abundant aerosol component. The angular correction of irregular particles is found to be only ∼2 % higher than the angular correction of volume-equivalent spheres. If the angular correction is calculated with Mie theory, the particle size distribution is needed. Our calculations show that if the particle size distribution is retrieved from optical particle spectrometer measurements and the irregular shape effect is not considered, the angular correction can be overestimated by about 5 % and up to 22 %. For mineral dust, the traditional angular correction based on the wavelength dependency of the scattering coefficient seems more accurate. We propose a guideline to establish the most appropriate angular correction depending on the aerosol type and the investigated size range.

Aerosol–cloud interactions contribute to the large uncertainties in current estimates of climate forcing. We investigated the effect of aerosol particles on cloud droplet formation by model calculations and aircraft measurements over the Amazon and over the western tropical Atlantic during the ACRIDICON–CHUVA campaign in September 2014. On the HALO (High Altitude Long Range Research) research aircraft, cloud droplet number concentrations (Nd) were measured near the base of clean and polluted growing convective cumuli using a cloud combination probe (CCP) and a cloud and aerosol spectrometer (CAS-DPOL). An adiabatic parcel model was used to perform cloud droplet number closure studies for flights in differently polluted air masses. Model input parameters included aerosol size distributions measured with an ultra-high sensitive aerosol spectrometer (UHSAS), in combination with a condensation particle counter (CPC). Updraft velocities (w) were measured with a boom-mounted Rosemount probe. Over the continent, the aerosol size distributions were dominated by accumulation mode particles, and good agreement between measured and modeled Nd values was obtained (deviations ≲ 10 %) assuming an average hygroscopicity of κ∼0.1, which is consistent with Amazonian biomass burning and secondary organic aerosol. Above the ocean, fair agreement was obtained assuming an average hygroscopicity of κ∼0.2 (deviations ≲ 16 %) and further improvement was achieved assuming different hygroscopicities for Aitken and accumulation mode particles (κAit=0.8, κacc=0.2; deviations ≲ 10 %), which may reflect secondary marine sulfate particles. Our results indicate that Aitken mode particles and their hygroscopicity can be important for droplet formation at low pollution levels and high updraft velocities in tropical convective clouds.

It was hypothesized that using mineral dust emission climatologies in global chemistry climate models (GCCMs), i.e. prescribed monthly-mean dust emissions representative of a specific year, may lead to misrepresentations of strong dust burst events. This could result in a negative bias of model dust concentrations compared to observations for these episodes. Here, we apply the aerosol microphysics submodel MADE3 (Modal Aerosol Dynamics model for Europe, adapted for global applications, third generation) as part of the ECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) general circulation model. We employ two different representations of mineral dust emissions for our model simulations: (i) a prescribed monthly-mean climatology of dust emissions representative of the year 2000 and (ii) an online dust parametrization which calculates wind-driven mineral dust emissions at every model time step. We evaluate model results for these two dust representations by comparison with observations of aerosol optical depth from ground-based station data. The model results show a better agreement with the observations for strong dust burst events when using the online dust representation compared to the prescribed dust emissions setup. Furthermore, we analyse the effect of increasing the vertical and horizontal model resolution on the mineral dust properties in our model. We compare results from simulations with T42L31 and T63L31 model resolution (2.8∘×2.8∘ and 1.9∘×1.9∘ in latitude and longitude, respectively; 31 vertical levels) with the reference setup (T42L19). The different model versions are evaluated against airborne in situ measurements performed during the SALTRACE mineral dust campaign (Saharan Aerosol Long-range Transport and Aerosol-Cloud Interaction Experiment, June–July 2013), i.e. observations of dust transported from the Sahara to the Caribbean. Results show that an increased horizontal and vertical model resolution is able to better represent the spatial distribution of airborne mineral dust, especially in the upper troposphere (above 400 hPa). Additionally, we analyse the effect of varying assumptions for the size distribution of emitted dust but find only a weak sensitivity concerning these changes. The results of this study will help to identify the model setup best suited for future studies and to further improve the representation of mineral dust particles in EMAC-MADE3.

Black carbon (BC) aerosols influence the Earth's atmosphere and climate, but their microphysical properties, spatiotemporal distribution, and long-range transport are not well constrained. This study presents airborne observations of the transatlantic transport of BC-rich African biomass burning (BB) smoke into the Amazon Basin using a Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) as well as several complementary techniques. We base our results on observations of aerosols and trace gases off the Brazilian coast onboard the HALO (High Altitude and LOng range) research aircraft during the ACRIDICON-CHUVA campaign in September 2014. During flight AC19 over land and ocean at the northeastern coastline of the Amazon Basin, we observed a BC-rich layer at ∼3.5 km altitude with a vertical extension of ∼0.3 km. Backward trajectories suggest that fires in African grasslands, savannas, and shrublands were the main source of this pollution layer and that the observed BB smoke had undergone more than 10 d of atmospheric transport and aging over the South Atlantic before reaching the Amazon Basin. The aged smoke is characterized by a dominant accumulation mode, centered at about 130 nm, with a particle concentration of Nacc=850±330 cm−3. The rBC particles account for ∼15 % of the submicrometer aerosol mass and ∼40 % of the total aerosol number concentration. This corresponds to a mass concentration range from 0.5 to 2 µg m−3 (1st to 99th percentiles) and a number concentration range from 90 to 530 cm−3. Along with rBC, high cCO (150±30 ppb) and cO3 (56±9 ppb) mixing ratios support the biomass burning origin and pronounced photochemical aging of this layer. Upon reaching the Amazon Basin, it started to broaden and to subside, due to convective mixing and entrainment of the BB aerosol into the boundary layer. Satellite observations show that the transatlantic transport of pollution layers is a frequently occurring process, seasonally peaking in August/September. By analyzing the aircraft observations together with the long-term data from the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO), we found that the transatlantic transport of African BB smoke layers has a strong impact on the northern and central Amazonian aerosol population during the BB-influenced season (July to December). In fact, the early BB season (July to September) in this part of the Amazon appears to be dominated by African smoke, whereas the later BB season (October to December) appears to be dominated by South American fires. This dichotomy is reflected in pronounced changes in aerosol optical properties such as the single scattering albedo (increasing from 0.85 in August to 0.90 in November) and the BC-to-CO enhancement ratio (decreasing from 11 to 6 ng m−3 ppb−1). Our results suggest that, despite the high fraction of BC particles, the African BB aerosol acts as efficient cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), with potentially important implications for aerosol–cloud interactions and the hydrological cycle in the Amazon.

Mineral dust is an important component of the climate system, interacting with radiation, clouds, and biogeochemical systems and impacting atmospheric circulation, air quality, aviation, and solar energy generation. These impacts are sensitive to dust particle size distribution (PSD), yet models struggle or even fail to represent coarse (diameter (d) >2.5 µm) and giant (d>20 µm) dust particles and the evolution of the PSD with transport. Here we examine three state-of-the-art airborne observational datasets, all of which measured the full size range of dust (d=0.1 to >100 µm) at different stages during transport with consistent instrumentation. We quantify the presence and evolution of coarse and giant particles and their contribution to optical properties using airborne observations over the Sahara (from the Fennec field campaign) and in the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) over the tropical eastern Atlantic (from the AER-D field campaign). Observations show significantly more abundant coarse and giant dust particles over the Sahara compared to the SAL: effective diameters of up to 20 µm were observed over the Sahara compared to 4 µm in the SAL. Excluding giant particles over the Sahara results in significant underestimation of mass concentration (40 %), as well as underestimates of both shortwave and longwave extinction (18 % and 26 %, respectively, from scattering calculations), while the effects in the SAL are smaller but non-negligible. The larger impact on longwave extinction compared to shortwave implies a bias towards a radiative cooling effect in dust models, which typically exclude giant particles and underestimate coarse-mode concentrations. A compilation of the new and published effective diameters against dust age since uplift time suggests that two regimes of dust transport exist. During the initial 1.5 d, both coarse and giant particles are rapidly deposited. During the subsequent 1.5 to 10 d, PSD barely changes with transport, and the coarse mode is retained to a much greater degree than expected from estimates of gravitational sedimentation alone. The reasons for this are unclear and warrant further investigation in order to improve dust transport schemes and the associated radiative effects of coarse and giant particles in models.

The present study aims to evaluate lidar retrievals of cloud-relevant aerosol properties by using polarization lidar and coincident airborne in situ measurements in the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) over the Barbados region. Vertical profiles of the number concentration of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), large particles (diameter d>500 nm), surface area, mass, and ice-nucleating particle (INP) concentration are derived from the lidar measurements and compared with CCN concentrations and the INP-relevant aerosol properties measured in situ with aircraft. The measurements were performed in the framework of the Saharan Aerosol Long-range Transport and Aerosol-Cloud-Interaction Experiment (SALTRACE) in summer 2013. The CCN number concentrations derived from lidar observations were up to a factor of 2 higher than the ones measured in situ aboard the research aircraft Falcon. Possible reasons for the difference are discussed. The number concentration of particles with a dry radius of more than 250 nm and the surface-area concentration obtained from the lidar observations and used as input for the INP parameterizations agreed well ( %–50 % deviation) with the aircraft measurements. In a pronounced lofted dust layer during summer (10 July 2013), the lidar retrieval yielded 100–300 CCN per cubic centimeter at 0.2 % water supersaturation and 10–200 INPs per liter at −25 ∘C. Excellent agreement was also obtained in the comparison of mass concentration profiles. During the SALTRACE winter campaign (March 2014), the dust layer from Africa was mixed with smoke particles which dominated the CCN number concentration. This example highlights the unique lidar potential to separate smoke and dust contributions to the CCN reservoir and thus to identify the sensitive role of smoke in trade wind cumuli developments over the tropical Atlantic during the winter season.

During the ACRIDICON-CHUVA field project (September–October 2014; based in Manaus, Brazil) aircraft-based in situ measurements of aerosol chemical composition were conducted in the tropical troposphere over the Amazon using the High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO), covering altitudes from the boundary layer (BL) height up to 14.4 km. The submicron non-refractory aerosol was characterized by flash-vaporization/electron impact-ionization aerosol particle mass spectrometry. The results show that significant secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation by isoprene oxidation products occurs in the upper troposphere (UT), leading to increased organic aerosol mass concentrations above 10 km altitude. The median organic mass concentrations in the UT above 10 km range between 1.0 and 2.5 µg m−3 (referring to standard temperature and pressure; STP) with interquartile ranges of 0.6 to 3.2 µg m−3 (STP), representing 78 % of the total submicron non-refractory aerosol particle mass. The presence of isoprene-epoxydiol-derived secondary organic aerosol (IEPOX-SOA) was confirmed by marker peaks in the mass spectra. We estimate the contribution of IEPOX-SOA to the total organic aerosol in the UT to be about 20 %. After isoprene emission from vegetation, oxidation processes occur at low altitudes and/or during transport to higher altitudes, which may lead to the formation of IEPOX (one oxidation product of isoprene). Reactive uptake or condensation of IEPOX on preexisting particles leads to IEPOX-SOA formation and subsequently increasing organic mass in the UT. This organic mass increase was accompanied by an increase in the nitrate mass concentrations, most likely due to NOx production by lightning. Analysis of the ion ratio of NO+ to NO2+ indicated that nitrate in the UT exists mainly in the form of organic nitrate. IEPOX-SOA and organic nitrates are coincident with each other, indicating that IEPOX-SOA forms in the UT either on acidic nitrate particles forming organic nitrates derived from IEPOX or on already neutralized organic nitrate aerosol particles.

Airborne observations over the Amazon Basin showed high aerosol particle concentrations in the upper troposphere (UT) between 8 and 15 km altitude, with number densities (normalized to standard temperature and pressure) often exceeding those in the planetary boundary layer (PBL) by 1 or 2 orders of magnitude. The measurements were made during the German–Brazilian cooperative aircraft campaign ACRIDICON–CHUVA, where ACRIDICON stands for Aerosol, Cloud, Precipitation, and Radiation Interactions and Dynamics of Convective Cloud Systems and CHUVA is the acronym for Cloud Processes of the Main Precipitation Systems in Brazil: A Contribution to Cloud Resolving Modeling and to the GPM (global precipitation measurement), on the German High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft (HALO). The campaign took place in September–October 2014, with the objective of studying tropical deep convective clouds over the Amazon rainforest and their interactions with atmospheric trace gases, aerosol particles, and atmospheric radiation. Aerosol enhancements were observed consistently on all flights during which the UT was probed, using several aerosol metrics, including condensation nuclei (CN) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) number concentrations and chemical species mass concentrations. The UT particles differed sharply in their chemical composition and size distribution from those in the PBL, ruling out convective transport of combustion-derived particles from the boundary layer (BL) as a source. The air in the immediate outflow of deep convective clouds was depleted of aerosol particles, whereas strongly enhanced number concentrations of small particles ( 90 nm) particles in the UT, which consisted mostly of organic matter and nitrate and were very effective CCN. Our findings suggest a conceptual model, where production of new aerosol particles takes place in the continental UT from biogenic volatile organic material brought up by deep convection and converted to condensable species in the UT. Subsequently, downward mixing and transport of upper tropospheric aerosol can be a source of particles to the PBL, where they increase in size by the condensation of biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) oxidation products. This may be an important source of aerosol particles for the Amazonian PBL, where aerosol nucleation and new particle formation have not been observed. We propose that this may have been the dominant process supplying secondary aerosol particles in the pristine atmosphere, making clouds the dominant control of both removal and production of atmospheric particles.

Optical particle counters (OPCs) are common tools for the in situ measurement of aerosol particle number size distributions. As the actual quantity measured by OPCs is the intensity of light scattered by individual particles, it is necessary to translate the distribution of detected scattering signals into the desired information, i.e., the distribution of particle sizes. A crucial part in this challenge is the modeling of OPC response and the calibration of the instrument – in other words, establishing the relation between instrument-specific particle scattering cross-section and measured signal amplitude. To date, existing methods lack a comprehensive parametrization of OPC response, particularly regarding the instrument-induced broadening of signal amplitude distributions. This deficiency can lead to significant size distribution biases. We introduce an advanced OPC response model including a simple parametrization of the broadening effect and a self-consistent way to evaluate calibration measurements using a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. We further outline how to consistently derive particle number size distributions with realistic uncertainty estimates within this new framework. Based on measurements of particle standards for two OPCs, the Grimm model 1.129 (SkyOPC) and the DMT Passive Cavity Aerosol Spectrometer Probe (PCASP), we demonstrate that residuals between measured and modeled response can be substantially reduced when using the new approach instead of existing methods. More importantly, for the investigated set of measurements only the new approach yields results that conform with the true size distributions within the range of model uncertainty. The presented innovations will help improving the accuracy of OPC-derived size distributions and the assessment of their precision.

High-molecular-weight linear polymers (HMWLPs) have earned the name "drag-reducing polymers" because of their ability to reduce drag in turbulent flows. Recently, these polymers have become popular in bioengineering applications. This study investigated whether the addition of HMWLP in a venoarterial extracorporeal circulation (ECC) model could improve microvascular perfusion and oxygenation. Golden Syrian hamsters were instrumented with a dorsal skinfold window chamber and subjected to ECC using a circuit comprised of a peristaltic pump and a bubble trap. The circuit was primed with lactated Ringer solution (LR) containing either 5 ppm of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with a low molecular weight of 500 kDa (PEG500k) or 5 ppm of PEG with a high molecular weight of 3,500 kDa (PEG3500k). After 90 min of ECC at 15% of the animal's cardiac output, the results showed that the addition of PEG3500k to LR improved microvascular blood flow in arterioles and venules acutely (2 h after ECC), whereas functional capillary density showed improvement up to 24 h after ECC. Similarly, PEG3500k improved venular hemoglobin O2 saturation on the following day after ECC. The serum and various excised organs all displayed reduced inflammation with the addition of PEG3500k, and several of these organs also had a reduction in markers of damage with the HMWLPs compared to LR alone. These promising results suggest that the addition of small amounts of PEG3500k can help mitigate the loss of microcirculatory function and reduce the inflammatory response from ECC procedures.NEW & NOTEWORTHY High-molecular-weight linear polymers have gained traction in bioengineering applications. PEG3500k improved venular hemoglobin O2 saturation and oxygen delivery acutely after ECC and reduced inflammation in various organs compared to LR alone.

Abstract The beneficial effects of exercise are partly mediated via local or systemic functions of the insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) system. As IGF-1 increases local brain hemoglobin beta (Hbb) transcripts, we hypothesized that exercise could have similar effects. Mice were single-housed with free access to running wheels for seven days. After sacrifice and saline perfusion, the expression of 13 genes was quantified using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) in three brain regions: the prefrontal cortex, motor cortex, and hippocampus. In addition, plasma insulin, glucose, homeostatic model assessment of IR (HOMA-IR), C-peptide, and IGF-1 were investigated. We show that hemoglobin-related transcripts (Hbb and 5’-aminolevulinate synthase 2 [Alas2]) increased 46–63% in the running group, while IGF-1-related genes [Igf1 / growth hormone receptor (Ghr)] decreased slightly (7%). There were also moderate to large correlations between Hbb- and IGF-1-related genes in the running group but not in the sedentary group. HOMA-IR, plasma glucose, and insulin changed marginally and non-significantly, but there was a trend toward an increase in plasma-IGF-1 in the running group. In conclusion, seven days of running increased Hbb-related transcripts in three brain regions. Hbb-related transcripts correlated with components of the brain IGF-1 system only in the running group.

Background: We evaluate the public health surveillance program, Screen, Test, and Protect (STP) designed to control and prevent COVID-19 at a large academic university in the United States. Methods: STP was established at the University of Florida in May 2020. This report details STP's full-time workforce, centralized database, and testing and vaccination programs. We evaluate the program's success in controlling COVID-19 during the 2020-2021 academic school year. Results: COVID-19 cases rose among the campus community in the first few weeks of campus reopening in Fall 2020. Test positivity levels returned to prefall semester levels within one month, however. A few additional, yet smaller, waves occurred during the 2020-2021 school year and were successfully controlled without any campus-wide closures. Conclusions: This program may serve as a framework for other institutions managing the ongoing COVID-19 crisis, in addition to setting the standard for programmatic management of future emerging infectious diseases at universities.

When the newly appointed professor of medicine at the University of Rinteln, Johann Peter Lotichius (1598-1669), delivered an oration entitled "Oratio super fatalibus hoc tempore academiarum in Germania periculis" ("Oration on the pernicious dangers to the universities of contemporary Germany") at said university in February 1631, the war, which later came to be known as the Thirty Years' War, had already been in full swing for more than a decade. Driven by his personal experience of trying to build an academic career amidst military confrontations, he rendered a disconcerting, yet dead serious account of bad students, bad teachers, bad customs, bad times, and how these factors mutually influence each other to produce bad education. With his speech, situated at the crossroads between the humanist criticism of academic life and the conventions of the "Miseria-saeculi"-theme, Lotichius took a moralising stance towards education that was closely tied to the socio-political struggles of his time. This article will not only disclose the literary and educational motives on which Lotichius' "Oratio" thrives, but also highlight some of its idiosyncrasies. In addition, the oration will be unveiled as a textual witness of the intellectual havoc the Thirty Years' War wrought on the German universities in general and the historically still under-researched University of Rinteln in particular.

Abstract Background Applying whole-body electromyostimulation (wbEMS) to voluntary activation of the muscle is known to impact motor unit recruitment. Thus, wbEMS as an additional training stimulus enhances force-related capacities. This study aimed to evaluate the mono- and multiarticular strength adaptations to a running intervention with wbEMS compared to running without wbEMS. Methods In a randomized controlled trial (RCT), 59 healthy participants (32 female/ 27 male, 41 ± 7 years) with minor running experience conducted an eight-week running intervention (2x/ week à 20 min) with a wbEMS suit (EG) or without wbEMS (control group, CG). Maximal isokinetic knee extensor and flexor strength and jump height during countermovement jumps were recorded prior and after the intervention to assess maximal strength and power. Results Following eight weeks of running, maximal isokinetic knee extension torque decreased significantly over time for both interventions (EG $$\Delta$$ Δ -4%, CG $$\Delta$$ Δ -4%; F(1, 44.14) = 5.96, p = 0.02, $${\upeta }$$ η = 0.12). No changes were observed for flexion torque (F(1, 43.20) = 3.93, p = 0.05, $${\upeta }$$ η = 0.08) or jump height (F(1, 43.04) = 0.32, p = 0.57, $${\upeta }$$ η = 0.01). Conclusions The outcomes indicate that there is no additional effect over neuromuscular function adaptations with the inclusion of wbEMS during running training. Knee extensor strength is even slightly reduced which supports the principle of training specificity in regards to strength adaptation. We conclude that strength improvements cannot be achieved by running with wbEMS. Trial registration German Clinical Trials Register, ID DRKS00026827, date 10/26/21.

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are a promising stationary energy storage technology for leveling power supply from intermittent renewable energy sources with demand. A central objective for the development of practical, scalable RFBs is to identify affordable and high-performance redox-active molecules as storage materials. Herein, we report the design, synthesis, and evaluation of a new organic scaffold, indolo[2,3-b]quinoxaline, for highly stable, low-reduction potential, and high-solubility anolytes for nonaqueous redox flow batteries (NARFBs). The mixture of 2- and 3-(tert-butyl)-6-(2-methoxyethyl)-6H-indolo[2,3-b]quinoxaline exhibits a low reduction potential (-2.01 V vs Fc/Fc+), high solubility (>2.7 M in acetonitrile), and remarkable stability (99.86% capacity retention over 49.5 h (202 cycles) of H-cell cycling). This anolyte was paired with N-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethyl)phenothiazine (MEEPT) to achieve a 2.3 V all-organic NARFB exhibiting 95.8% capacity retention over 75.1 h (120 cycles) of cycling.

DiGeorge syndrome, also referred as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome is a multisystem disorder associated with an increased risk of early-onset parkinsonism. In this case report, we present a case of a 47-year-old male patient with complex comorbidities and seizures. This patient presented with increased seizure frequency and on examination was found to have parkinsonism. Due to the symptoms constellation, a genetic analysis was done which revealed presence of DiGeorge syndrome. However, his DaTscan was normal and hence a possibility of medication induced parkinsonism was considered. Through this case report, we want to emphasize the fact that while it is important to consider genetic testing for young patients with parkinsonism especially in those with complex comorbidities, other possible causes of parkinsonism should not be ignored.
