NA60; The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS studies dimuon production in proton and heavy ion collisions. Its silicon pixel vertex telescope allows tracking of muon pairs in the vertex region, complementing the information from the muon spectrometer, and improving the mass resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. First results from the In-In data taking are shown for the light resonances and the J/$\psi$ meson production.

NA50; Angular distributions of charged particles produced in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN SPS have been measured by the NA50 experiment. Measurements have been performed with a silicon microstrip detector at two different beam energies (40 and 158 GeV/nucleon) and over a wide impact parameter (centrality) range. The centrality of the collision has been evaluated both by neutral transverse energy released in the interaction and by spectator nucleons energy (zero degree energy). The charged particle density at midrapidity shows a linear dependence on the number of participating nucleons at both beam energies. The particle density per participant pair and its $\sqrt{S}$ dependence are also studied.

From proton, deuteron, S- and Pb-induced reactions, experiments NA38 and NA50 have measured muon pair production with various targets. In particular, the production rates of the , ω and ρ mesons have been simultaneously extracted and compared. Preliminary partial results of the most recent Pb–Pb measurement done in year 2000 by NA50 are presented here. They are also included in the comparison with the results obtained with lighter interacting nuclei.

We present the measurements of charged particle pseudorapidity distributions dNch/dη performed by the NA50 experiment in Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. Measurements were done at incident energies of 40 GeV (√s = 8.77 GeV) and 158 GeV (√s = 17.3 GeV) per nucleon over a broad impact parameter range. The multiplicity distributions are studied as a function of centrality using the number of participating nucleons(N part ), or the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions (Ncoll). Their values at midrapidity exhibit a linear scaling withN part at both energies. Particle yield increases approximately by a factor of 2 betweeny √s = 8.77 GeV and √s = 17.3 GeV.

The experiment NA50 studies the strangeness production by means of the BRμμσ/(BRρμμσρ + BRωμμσω) cross-sections ratio in relativistic heavy ion collisions with respect to proton and light ion collisions. New results for Pb+Pb interactions at 158 A GeV/c are presented (1998 data) and analysed with a different method. The BRμμσ/(BRρμμσρ + BRωμμσω) ratio shows an increase with the number of participants, in agreement with previous results. The inverse slope parameter extracted from the MT universal scaling is also studied.

Low mass dimuons production has been studied in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV/A . φ, ρ and ω contributions are extracted in different transverse mass and transverse energy domains. Preliminary results of the 1996 run display an increase of the φ/(ρ+ω) ratio, coming from an increase of the φ. Cross sections are presented and temperatures extracted.

The NA50 experiment studies the production of J/γ in Pb+Pb collisions. The anomalous J/ψ suppression in relativistic heavy ion collisions, considered an unambiguous signature for the formation of a quark gluon plasma, is studied in the dimuon channel, using as reference the Drell-Yan muon pairs. Preliminary results from the analysis of the 2000 data, with the target region vacuum, are presented and compared to an update of those obtained from previous data samples.

NA60; The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS studies dimuon production in nucleusnucleus and proton-nucleus collisions. One of the main detectors in the apparatus is the silicon pixel vertex telescope, which tracks charged particles in the target region. This detector complements the information from the muon spectrometer, improving the dimuon mass resolution and signal-to-noise ratio of the experiment, overcoming the main limitations of its predecessors. The silicon vertex telescope also provides the experiment with the capability of measuring charged particle multiplicities. In this paper we briefly describe the experiment and some preliminary results on charged particle multiplicities for two different colliding systems at different incident beam energies (Pb-Pb at 30 AGeV and In-In at 158 AGeV).

NA50; We present the set of measurements carried out by the NA50 experiment to study J$\psi$ production in proton- and ion-induced reactions. We also make use of results obtained previously under similar conditions by experiments NA51, NA38 and NA3. All these measurements were performed in fixed target experiments at the CERN SPS. Due to accelerator constraints, momentum was 450, 400 and 200 GeV/c for incident proton beams (corresponding to $\sqrt{s}$=29.0, 27.4, 19.4 GeV} respectively) whereas, for ion beams, incident momentum was 200 GeV/nucleon for oxygen and sulfur and 158 GeV/nucleon for Pb beams ($\sqrt{s}$=19.4 and $\sqrt{s}$=17.2 GeV} respectively). The p–A data allow us to determine with high accuracy the absorption cross section of the (pre-)resonant $c\bar{c}$ state with nuclear matter. The J$\psi$ production cross section normally expected for ion-induced reactions can then be determined and compared to the results obtained from the data collected for oxygen- and sulfur-induced collisions. Finally, we also present the most recent results on J$\psi$ production in Pb–Pb interactions. They are based on the last data sample collected with an improved experimental set-up and are compared with the expectations inferred from similar measurements on lighter nuclei collisions.

Charmonium suppression in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon is investigated in detail with the study of the transverse momentum distributions of J/ ψ as a function of the centrality of the collision. It is shown that the observed J/ ψ suppression in Pb-Pb interactions is particularly significant mainly at low transverse momentum where it strongly depends on centrality. For peripheral Pb-Pb collisions, the transverse momentum dependence of the J/ ψ cross section is, as a function of centrality, qualitatively similar to the dependence observed in p-A and S-U collisions. Comparing peripheral and central Pb-Pb collisions, the data show a relative suppression in the whole p T range although its amplitude significantly decreases with increasing p T and becomes almost p T independent for the highest p T values.

The NA60 experiment studies the production of open charm and prompt dimuons in proton–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus collisions at the CERN SPS. The main goal of NA60 is the study of various possible signatures of the transition from hadronic to deconfined partonic matter, e.g. anomalous charmonium suppression, dimuons from thermal radiation and modifications of vector meson properties. Reaching these goals is facilitated by the use of new state-of-the-art silicon detectors in the vertex region. Downstream of the target and inside a 2.5 T dipole magnetic field a pixel telescope measures the charged tracks originating from the collisions. The full pixel telescope consists of 16 planes with 96 ALICE1LHCb pixel detector assemblies in total. This paper describes the setup of the pixel telescope, results from tests as well as the expected implications of the operation of the silicon detectors in the harsh radiation environment of the NA60 experiment, with heavy-ion collisions.

NA60; The NA60 experiment takes place at the SPS at CERN, to study the production of open charm and prompt dimuons in collisions induced by proton and heavy ion beams on nuclear targets. For this task, several novel detector systems were added to the dimuon spectrometer and zero-degree calorimeter, which were previously used in the NA50 experiment. The main upgrade is a new silicon pixel vertex spectrometer. It tracks the charged particles that are produced through the collisions in the target and allows us to match their trajectories and momenta with those of the muons that are measured behind the hadron absorber in the muon spectrometer. Besides improving considerably the dimuon mass resolution, the vertex telescope measures the offset of each muon track with respect to the interaction point. This allows us to select events where charm mesons were produced. We present in this article first results from dimuon data that were acquired in Summer 2002 with a 400 GeV proton beam. A silicon microstrip telescope was used at that time, since only a part of the pixel telescope was completed. The results include an improved dimuon mass resolution and an extended phase space coverage when compared with previous experiments. Data from Pb-Pb collisions at 20 and 30 GeV per nucleon were collected in October 2002 with three planes of pixel detectors. We show the very good accuracy with which we could reconstruct the interaction vertex. We conclude with a reminder of our physics programme and the ongoing completion of the pixel detector telescope for the Indium-Indium run at 158 GeV per nucleon, scheduled for September and October 2003.

We present a study of the transverse momentum and transverse mass of J ψ mesons produced in nucleus-nucleus and p-nucleus reactions. They include the most recent data collected by the NA50 experiment in PbPb and p-A reactions at 158 GeV/c and 400 GeV/c incident momentum respectively. Together with S-U results previously published by experiment NA38, the mean squared transverse momentum of J ψ mesons exhibit a scaling behaviour which could result from initial state parton interaction. However, for the most central PbPb collisions a saturation effect is observed as a function of centrality.

Charmonium production in p-A collisions is a unique tool for the study of the interaction of bound ccbar in nuclear matter. It can provide details on the basic features of the resonance formation mechanism and, in particular, on its non-perturbative aspects. In this Letter, we present an experimental study of Charmonia and Drell-Yan production in proton-nucleus collisions at 450GeV/c. The results are analyzed in the framework of the Glauber model and lead to the values of the nuclear absorption cross-section sigma^abs_pA for j/psi and psi'. Then, we compare the J/psi absorption in proton-nucleus and sulphur-uranium interactions, using NA38 data. We obtain that, for the J/psi, omega^abs_pA and omega^abs_SU are compatible, showing that no sizeable additional suppression mechanism in present S-U collisions, and confirming that the anomalous J/psi suppression only sets in for Pb-Pb interactions.

The production of vector mesons φ , ρ and ω has been measured in Pb–Pb collisions at 158 GeV/ c per nucleon incident momentum at the CERN/SPS. The muon spectrometer of experiment NA50 detects φ , ρ and ω mesons via their μ + μ − decay channel in the collision center of mass rapidity range 0⩽ y CM ⩽1. The results reported here show that the relative production of the φ compared to the ( ρ + ω ) and the φ multiplicity per participant nucleon ( N part ) increase with the centrality of the collision. On the other hand, the ( ρ + ω ) multiplicity per participant does not exhibit any N part dependence within our errors. The inverse slope parameter as deduced from an exponential fit to the φ transverse mass distribution is 228±10 MeV. Our results are compared with those obtained by experiment NA49 and with theoretical calculations.

The main goal of the NA50 experiment is to study the J/ψ suppression pattern in Pb-Pb interactions, at 158 GeV/c per nucleon at the CERN SPS. We present here the results from the 1996 and 1998 data taking periods. We used new event selection procedures, different analysis techniques and different event centrality estimators and we can now confirm and extend our previous observation that the J/ψ is anomalously suppressed when going from peripheral to central Pb-Pb collisions. We observe that in peripheral collisions the J/ψ cross section per nucleon-nucleon collision agrees with the pattern inferred from a wide range of measurements with lighter systems, from p-p to S-U. When the collisions become more central a clear departure from this behavior is observed. The 1996 data show a sudden drop in the J/ψ production yield for transverse energy values above 40 GeV. The 1998 data provide a big improvement in the study of the most central region, where a second change in the pattern becomes visible. This suppres...

The charged particle multiplicity distribution dN ch / dη has been measured by the NA50 experiment in Pb–Pb collisions at the CERN SPS. Measurements were done at incident energies of 40 and 158 GeV per nucleon over a broad impact parameter range. The multiplicity distributions are studied as a function of centrality using the number of participating nucleons ( N part ), or the number of binary nucleon–nucleon collisions ( N coll ). Their values at midrapidity exhibit a power law scaling behaviour given by N part 1.00 and N coll 0.75 at 158 GeV. Compatible results are found for the scaling behaviour at 40 GeV. The width of the dN ch / dη distributions is larger at 158 than at 40 GeV/nucleon and decreases slightly with centrality at both energies. Our results are compared to similar studies performed by other experiments both at the CERN SPS and at RHIC.

The J/$\psi$ production in 158 A GeV Pb-Pb interactions is studied, in the dimuon decay channel, as a function of centrality, as measured with the electromagnetic or with the very forward calorimeters. After a first sharp variation at mid centrality, both patterns continue to fall down and exhibit a curvature change at high centrality values. This trend excludes any conventional hadronic model and is in agreement with a deconfined quark-gluon phase scenario. We report also preliminary results on the measured charged multiplicity, as given by a dedicated detector., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures (in eps) talk given at XXXI International Symposium on Multiparticle Dynamics, Sep. 1-7, 2001, Datong China URL http://ismd31.ccnu.edu.cn/

The NA50 experiment has measured, at the CERN SPS, the dimuon production in PbPb collisions at 158 GeV/c per nucleon, following the program of the previous NA38 and NA51 experiments, performed with proton and light ion beams. The J /Ψ production has been studied by NA50 as a function of the centrality of the collisions. The results of the analyses performed on three data samples, collected from 1995 to 1998, show that for peripheral collisions the J /Ψ cross section can be understood in terms of ordinary nuclear absorption, consistently with the extrapolation of previous measurements extending from p-p to S-U. On the contrary, the central events show an anomalous J /Ψ suppression, and the pattern of J /Ψ yield versus centrality features two discontinuities that cannot be described by conventional models based on hadronic scenarios. These results can be considered as a strong indication of the creation of a new state of matter in central PbPb collisions at the SPS.

The observation of an anomalous J/psi suppression in Pb-Pb collisions by the NA50 Collaboration can be considered as the most striking indication for the deconfinement of quarks and gluons at SPS energies. In this Letter, we determine the J/psi suppression pattern as a function of the forward hadronic energy E-ZDC measured in a Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC). The direct connection between EZDC and the geometry of the collision allows us to calculate, within a Glauber approach, the precise relation between the number of participant nucleons N-part and E-ZDC. Then, we check if the experimental data can be better explained by a sudden or a smooth onset of the anomalous J/psi suppression as a function of the number of participants. In the search for the quark-gluon plasma at CERN SPS, several signals were observed suggesting that this new state of matter was actually produced in the interactions induced by the lead beam at 158A GeV. The transverse flow phenomena characterize the distribution of the particles in the final state of the collision, and are expected to provide some indications about the initial state. More precisly, the existence of an elliptic flow directed along the reaction plane in the case of the non central collisions of two spherical nuclei, has been proposed to probe the thermalisation of the initial state. Indeed, the NA50 collaboration has measured these kind of effects in Pb-Pb collisions at 158A GeV, and we can conclude that the thermalisation of the initial state is actually present in these interactions. Conversely, there is no evidence for such a thermalisation in the NA38 data which were obtained with the sulphur beam at 200A GeV, neither in S-S nor in S-Cu interactions.

Muon pairs produced in Pb-Pb interactions at 158~GeV/$c$ per nucleon are used to study the transverse momentum distributions of the J/$\psi$, $\psi^{\prime}$ and dimuons in the mass continuum. In particular, the dependence of these distributions on the centrality of the Pb-Pb collision is investigated in detail.

The analysis of the data collected by the NA50 experiment in 1998, reported in this paper, extends and clarifies the pattern of the previously observed J/$\psi$ anomalous suppression. This new measurement, besides providing a deeper understanding of the previous observations, reveals a steady significative decrease in the J/$\psi$ production rate up to the most central Pb-Pb collisions. It clearly rules out the presently available conventional (hadronic) models of J/$\psi$ suppression, which unanimously predict a saturation of the J/$\psi$ rate for central Pb-Pb collisions. On the contrary and together with the sharp onset of the anomalous suppression previously reported, the new observation leads to a global production rate pattern which finds its natural explanation in the framework of the formation of a deconfined state of quarks and gluons.

The J/ψ production in 158 A GeV Pb-Pb interactions is studied as a function of centrality. Its pattern, after a first sharp variation around ET=40 GeV, continues to fall down and exhibits a curvature change around ET=90 GeV. This trend excludes any conventional hadronic model and is in agreement with a deconfined quark-gluon phase scenario.

The threshold effect in the J/ψ suppression seen in the NA50 data in lead on lead interactions at the CERN SPS [1,2] can't be taken into account by conventional models. Other candidate models [3] use a phase transition, and therefore let suppose that the thermodynamic variables are defined everywhere that is the so-called thermalization. The in-plane elliptic flow, which has been proposed [4] in order to probe the thermalization at these beam energies, is found to be actually present in lead on lead interactions at 158A GeV/ c , but can't be observed in sulphur on sulphur at 200A GeV/ c in the NA38 data [5,6].

The main goal of the NA50 experiment is to study the J/ψ suppression pattern in Pb-Pb interactions, at 158 GeV/c per nucleon at the CERN SPS. We present here the results from the 1996 (final) and 1998 (preliminary) data taking periods. They confirm and extend our previous observation that the J/ψ is anomalously suppressed from peripheral to central collisions. With new event selection procedures and different analysis techniques, we observe that in peripheral collisions the J/ψ cross section per nucleon-nucleon collision agrees with the pattern inferred from a wide range of measurements with lighter systems, from pp up to S-U. When the collisions become more central a clear departure from this behaviour is observed. The 1996 data show a sudden drop in the J/ψ production yield for ET values above 40 GeV, where ET is the neutral transverse electromagnetic energy released in the colision and measured in the EM calorimeter. The 1998 data provide a big improvement in the study of the most central region, where a second change in the pattern becomes visible.

The NA50 experiment at the CERN SPS has been equipped with a Cerenkov quartz detector to measure the charge of projectilelike fragments emitted in interactions of the lead beam of $158A \mathrm{GeV}$ with a 12 mm thick lead target. A clear fission peak has been observed in the light output distribution of the fragment detector and the measured number of fission events per incident Pb ion is $(1.26\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.16)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}.$ The information provided by the NA50 zero-degree calorimeter has allowed us to check that fission occurs in extremely peripheral collisions. To provide the first information about the fission mechanism, the expected yield of electromagnetic fission events in our experimental conditions has been computed: it turns out to be about $40%$ smaller than the observed one. The approximations necessarily made in our calculation as well as the contribution due to fission induced by nuclear interaction could account for such a difference.
