Anthracnose is one of the most destructive grapevine diseases in warm and humid regions, but no efficient tools are available to quantify disease symptoms in different parts of the plant. Therefore, this study aimed to develop and validate standard area diagrams (SADs) to evaluate grapevine anthracnose on the fruit and shoot. For fruit SAD development, fruit clusters showing signs of anthracnose symptoms were sampled from five different white grape genotypes: Aromera, Bronner, GF24, Felicia and Helios. To develop the shoot SAD, plants from a population that segregated for anthracnose resistance were artificially inoculated. Fruits and shoots with characteristic symptoms were photographed, and a total of 30 and 31 images, respectively, were selected to develop each SAD. The SADs from fruit and shoots included severity ranging from 0.5 to 17.6% and from 0.8 to 45.9%, respectively. In order to verify the applicability of both SADs, random raters evaluated the images with and without the use of the SAD. Rater data were utilized for validation of both SADs using linear regression, absolute error and Lin’s statistic, and repeatability was tested by inter-rate analysis. The developed SADs improved the accuracy and repeatability among the raters. In addition, diagrammatic scales for anthracnose severity on the fruit and shoot decreased absolute error and disease overestimation. In conclusion, the use of both sets of SADs improved grapevine anthracnose evaluation on the fruit and shoots.

Holstein × Gyr and Holstein are the primary dairy breeds used in tropical systems, but when rearing under pasture, feed intake, behavior, and performance might differ between them. This study aimed to evaluate the voluntary intake, nutrient digestibility, performance, and ingestive behavior of Holstein and Holstein × Gyr (½ Holstein × ½ Gyr) heifers managed in a rotational system of Guinea grass (Panicum maximum Jacq. cv. Mombaça). The experiment was conducted during the summer season throughout four periods of 21 d. Two 8-heifers (four Holstein and four Holstein × Gyr) groups, averaging 258.6 ± 24.79 kg and 157.1 ± 24.99 kg BW, were used. Each group grazed a separate set of 16 paddocks, and all heifers received a concentrate supplement daily. Heifers were weighed at the beginning and end of the experiment. Fecal, forage and concentrate samples were evaluated for their DM, CP, crude fat, ash, NDF, and indigestible NDF. Feeding behavior was evaluated through 24 h of live observation for 48 h of each experimental period. Grazing, ruminating, resting, and intake of concentrate times were recorded, and rumination criteria, bout criteria, mealtime, meal frequency, and meal duration were calculated. There was no difference in total dry matter intake (DMI), but forage DMI of Holstein × Gyr was 11.70 % greater than the Holstein heifers. The Holstein × Gyr heifers had greater NDF intake and feed efficiency tended to show greater CP and NDF digestibilities, consequently, they had greater average daily gain (ADG). Holstein grazed less than Holstein × Gyr heifers in the afternoon. Ruminating time was 18.43 % lower for Holstein than Holstein × Gyr heifers, and rumination criteria (i.e. longest non-feeding interval within a rumination event) were greater for Holstein heifers. Holstein heifers presented more prolonged rumination bouts and resting time than Holstein × Gyr heifers. Holstein × Gyr can ingest and ruminate greater amounts of fibrous material, and Holstein heifers needed to spend more time ruminating the cud. Overall, even though the behavior was not markedly different between breeds, rearing young Holstein heifers in tropical pasture conditions is less suitable than Holstein-Gyr because of their lower ADG. Therefore, this management condition seems appropriate for Holstein × Gyr but inappropriate for Holstein dairy heifers.

The ceramic industry is one of the most important productive chains of the State of Pará, generating both money and employment. Kaolin has many industrial applications and new uses are constantly surveyed. Although the extraction and processing of kaolin contribute to the economy growth, the activity also provokes serious environmental issues. Being aware of the environmental problem caused by the inadequate decomposition of kaolin residues from the beneficiation process of these minerals, which pollute and attack the environment, this paper aims the chemical, physical and mineralogical characterization of the kaolin residue from the post-treatment disposal provided by CADAM S/A company. The main oxides in the residues were SiO2and Al2O3. In the X-ray diffraction analysis it was verified that the kaolin residue is basically formed by kaolinite and quartz, in the particle size analysis it was observed that the medium size of the particle was of 1,77 μm.

Members of the miR-125 family are strongly expressed in several tissues, particularly brain, but may be dysregulated in cancer including adult and pediatric glioma. In this study, miR-125 members were downregulated in pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) as a group compared to non-neoplastic brain in the Agilent platform. In the Nanostring platform, miR-125 members were downregulated primarily in pleomorphic xanthoastrocytomas and gangliogliomas. This study evaluated the optimum inclusion of a feed oil additive chemically extracted from cashew nuts in lamb diets on the physicochemical and sensory attributes of burgers produced from their meat. Forty lambs (26 ± 2.4 kg of initial BW and 5 months of age) were used in a block randomized design with ten experimental units per treatment. Lambs were fed a total mixed ration containing cashew nut shell liquid (tCNSL) at levels of 0, 7.5, 15 and 22.5 g/kg g/kg of dietary dry matter. Lambs were slaughtered, and the meat was processed for burger production. The addition of tCNSL to the diets promoted a quadratic increase in DMI (P = 0.034), ADG (P = 0.016) and slaughter BW (P = 0.002). However, the addition of tCNSL to the lamb diet did not change (P >0.05) the concentrations of moisture, protein, lipids, crude ash and cooking losses; water holding capacity or hardness and color index a* of the lamb meat burgers. There was a linear decrease (P 0.05) in the sensory attributes of the lamb meat burgers. All variables scored between 7 and 8, being considered by the tasters as moderately liked and very liked, obtaining a good overall acceptance. However, the preference (P = 0.042) ranking of the panellists was for burgers from the meat of lambs fed with tCNSL, regardless of the level of inclusion, compared to treatment without tCNSL. It is recommended to include up to 15 g tCNSL/kg DM as antioxidant in the lamb’s diet because it improves growth performance, color index and physical quality, and reduces the elasticity, chewability, lipid peroxidation and metmyoglobins, and increasing the preference of lamb meat burgers.

We present the first record of Epicadus trituberculatus (Taczanowski, 1872) from the Northeast Region of Brazil. The new record is based on six specimens observed in two areas of montane semi-deciduous tropical forest located in two municipalities: Guaramiranga and Pacatuba, Ceará state, Brazil. Of the six specimens observed we collected manually only three to preserve as voucher material. In Brazil, E. trituberculatus has a wide distribution range, which extends from the Atlantic Forest, Amazon, and Cerrado biomes and the Pampa ecoregion. With the new record there are currently six known species of Epicadus in northeastern Brazil.

International audience; Praziquantel (PZQ) is the first line drug for the treatment of human Schistosoma spp. worm infections. However, it suffers from low activity towards immature stages of the worm, and its prolonged use induces resistance/tolerance. During the last 40 years, 263 PZQ analogues have been synthesized and tested against Schistosoma spp. worms, but less than 10% of them showed significant activity. Here, we propose a rationalization of the chemical space of the PZQ derivatives by a ligand-based approach. First, we constructed an in-house database with all PZQ derivatives available in the literature. This analysis shows a high heterogeneity in the data. Fortunately, all studies include PZQ as a reference, permitting the classification of compounds into three classes according to their activities. Models involving ligand-based pharmacophore and logistic regression were performed. Five physicochemical parameters were identified as the best to explain the biological activity. In the end, we proposed new PZQ derivatives with modifications at positions 1 and 7, we analysed them with our models, and we observed that they can be more active than the previously synthesized derivatives. The main goal of this work was to conduct the most valuable meta-pharmacometrics/pharmacoinformatics analysis with all Praziquantel medicinal chemistry data available in the literature.

Sintering of powders commonly leads to simultaneous densification and grain growth, particularly for nanocrystalline materials. Currently, methods such as spark plasma sintering (SPS), hot pressing (HP), two-step sintering (TSS) and fast firing (FF) are employed to hinder grain growth while maintaining a high densification. In this work, FF consisting in thermal treatments with high heating rates (>500° C/min) and shorter holding times (10 min or less) and conventional sintering (CS) approaches were experimentally compared in the sintering of commercial yttria doped zirconia (3YSZ and 8YSZ) compacts. CS-samples presented larger grain sizes by a factor of ~2 and ~4 in comparison to the initial 3YSZ and 8YSZ powders. Conversely, FF method significantly suppressed grain growth with a growth factor of ~1. Those results and comparison with previous work indicated that high heat inputs could indeed minimize grain growth.

The clone refers to a vine cultivar that is selected for specific qualities, such as resistance to certain diseases or desired cluster size, taste or smell. Rootstocks are a link between the soil and the scion, they play an important role in vine adaptation to environmental factors. The objective of this study was to evaluate five 'Cabernet Sauvignon' clones grafted on two rootstocks and their influence on fruit quality. The experiment was conducted in Villa Francioni vineyards located at the city of Sao Joaquim (28°17’S; 49°56’W, altitude 1350 m), in Santa Catarina State, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with three blocks and 20 plants per plot. The plants of 'Cabernet Sauvignon' were grafted on 1103 P and 3309 C and conducted in vertical shoot positioning trellis. The clonal selections evaluated were 169, 337, 170, 341, 339 and R5. The scion-rootstock combinations were 169 on 1103 P, 169 on 3309 C, 337 on 1103 P, 170 on 3309 C, 339 on 3309 C, 341 on 1103 P and R5 on 1103 P. The variables analysed were cluster and 50 berries weight, number of berries per cluster, berry diameter, cluster compactness, anthocyanins contents (mg L-1), total polyphenols, tannins, pH, total soluble solids, acidity (meq L-1) and color intensity. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukey's test (5% probability). To the variables total soluble solids and acidity, the clone 169 on 1103 P presented the best results, while to pH the clone 170 on 3309 C was better. The maximum concentration of anthocyanins was observed in 339 grafted on 3309 C. The highest levels of total polyphenols, tannins and color intensity were observed in R5 on 3309 C.

In recent years, the Brazilian vitiviniculture deserves recognition for the cultivation of grapevines (Vitis vinifera) in the highlands of the State of Santa Catarina (over 900 ms elevation). Due to its distinct climatic and soil characteristics, this region shows a unique terroir, resulting in typical high quality products. Currently, there is little scientific knowledge available for this wine-growing region. Given this situation, this work aimed to characterize the performance of the ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ cultivar in two vineyards located in the highland region of Santa Catarina - Campo Belo do Sul (27°45’57”S latitude; 50°48’30”W longitude, altitude: 960 m) and Bom Retiro (27°51’47”S latitude; 49°35’54”S longitude, altitude: 940 m) - during the 2007-2008 cycle. At both vineyards, meteorological stations were installed. During the maturation period, grape berries were weekly collected for physic-chemical analysis. The results suggest that the climatic conditions of Bom Retiro (BR) and Campo Belo do Sul (CBS) are favorable for the activity, with photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) more than 800 µmolfotons m -2 s -1 , what is satisfactory for the metabolism of the vine. During the maturation period, the mean of maximum temperatures was 21.9°C (CBS) and 24.5°C (BR), mean temperature 15.6°C (CBS) and 18.4°C (BR), and the means of minimum temperatures were 14.2°C (CBS) and 11.1°C (BR). The precipitation seems to be the most limiting factor, with a total precipitation of 224.6 mm (CBS) and 259.8 mm (BR) during the maturation period. The physic-chemical analysis also demonstrated the high potential of both regions. The analysis detected high values of total soluble solids (BR=19.7 and CBS=21.5°Brix), total anthocyanins (BR=1207 and CBS=1175 mg/L) and total polyphenols (BR=815 and CBS=1257mg gallic acid/100 g of skin). The results strongly suggest that both regions have a high potential to produce fine wines with distinct characteristics.

The reference source method associated with HPGe γ-ray spectrometric techniques has been applied to half-life determinations of radionuclides used in nuclear medicine. Simultaneous measurements were undertaken for radiopharmaceutical nuclides such as 67Ga, 99Tcm, 123I, 131I and another radionuclide as reference. Besides optimizing the analysis time, this procedure was shown to be independent of the instrumental technique, environmental and radiochemical impurity interferences for most radionuclides. However, some restrictions were observed in samples that contained impurities with the same emission energy or an energy that was very close to the energy of the radionuclide to be measured. The measurement conditions improved the quoted accuracy of the half-life by reducing the type B component uncertainty.

OBJETIVO: Contribuir para o achado do óstio de Wirsung durante a técnica da papilo-esfincteroplastia, prevenindo a pancreatite aguda pós-operatória. CASUÍSTICA E MÉTODO: Foram estudados 27 pacientes submetidos a papilo-esfincteroplastia por coledocolitíase com ou sem odite. Após a papilo-esfincterotomia (PET) terapêutica, por via duodenal, realizou-se estudo da localização do óstio do ducto de Wirsung. A PET transforma a ampola de Vater em um triângulo isósceles, cujas medidas foram obtidas através de compasso. Utilizando-as, o óstio do Wirsung poderá ser facilmente identificado e cateterizado no trans-operatório, antes de se fazer a sutura muco-mucosa da papila seccionada. RESULTADOS: O óstio geralmente é encontrado medialmente na metade esquerda do triângulo e a uma distância média de 0,19cm a 0,25cm acima da base do triângulo, considerando-se a ausência ou presença de inflamação, respectivamente. CONCLUSÃO: A determinação transoperatória das distâncias padronizadas neste estudo, permite a detecção e cateterização segura do óstio do Wirsung na presença ou não de odite.PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to suggest a feasible method to find the ostium of the Wirsung's duct during sphincteroplasty of the Vater's papilla, in order to avoid post-operative complications such as acute pancreatitis. After therapeutic papillotomy and sphincterotomy through the duodenun, the location of the ostium of the Wirsung's duct was determined and studied. After papillotomy, the Vater's papilla becomes an isosceles triangle and its measurements were made with a compass. Thereby the ostium of Wirsung's duct was easily detected and a catheter was inserted before the suture of the mucosa of the papilla. RESULTS: The ostium was generally found medially, on the left side of the triangle, 0.19cm to 0.25cm on average above its base whether there was inflammation or not, respectively. CONCLUSION: The transoperative determination of the dimensions as proposed in this study, allows a safety detection and cannulation of the Wirsung's duct with or without inflammation of the Oddi's sphincter.

No Brasil, a falta de porta-enxertos para as Prunáceas, principalmente de origem clonal, tem incentivado a seleção de novas variedades e o uso de técnicas de cultura in vitro para a propagação. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o potencial de multiplicação in vitro do porta-enxerto 'Carelli' sob efeito de diferentes concentrações da citocinina 6-benzilaminopurina (BAP). Segmentos nodais com 0,5 cm de comprimento foram inoculados em meio de cultura de Lepoivre, suplementado com 0,0; 0,5; 1,0; 2,0 e 4,0 mg.L-1 BAP. Estes segmentos nodais são oriundos de plântulas preestabelecidas in vitro, após duas subculturas em meio de cultura de Lepoivre, suplementado com 0,5 mg.L-1 de BAP. As avaliações para número de brotos por explante e altura média das brotações foram realizadas após 21 dias de cultura in vitro. Os resultados mostraram que os tratamentos com BAP não apresentaram diferenças significativas entre si. A taxa média de multiplicação foi de 3,3 a 3,4 brotos por explante. O tratamento sem adição de BAP não apresentou a formação de brotações axilares, mas resultou em brotos com maior altura média (16,2 mm). O uso de BAP afetou significativamente a altura das brotações, e o acréscimo nas suas concentrações reduziu o comprimento das mesmas. Concentrações de BAP superiores a 1,0 mg.L-1de BAP reduziram o comprimento das brotações e promoveram hiperidricidade. O uso de 0,5 mg.L-1 de BAP promoveu a formação de 3,3 brotos por explante com 11,0 mm de altura média, em condições adequadas para o enraizamento.

Este artigo apresenta a modelagem e a simulação do canal rádio de banda ultralarga, com linha de visada entre transmissor e receptor, em um ambiente interno (indoor) da Universidade Federal Fluminense, baseado no modelo auto-regressivo da função seletividade em freqüência, medida no ambiente. Cinco métodos para implementar modelos auto-regressivos de segunda ordem são propostos, e os resultados da simulação do canal nesses modelos são comparados ao canal real, através dos parâmetros de pequena escala (banda de coerência, retardo médio e espalhamento de retardo). Os resultados obtidos são discutidos e, então, ajustes são propostos nos modelos de modo a se obter um melhor modelo do canal.

Information Visualization techniques have been successfully used to build visual and interactive analysis of data and data relationships. One of its possible areas of application is computer network monitoring and traffic analysis. The analysis of the internal behavior of a company with high demand for Internet services helps to determine if the company is competing with its own clients over the available resources for online transactions, or event putting client information in risk. PRISMA, a tool with multiple coordinated data views has been analyzed to find patterns involving transactions against the company security policies. The goal is to suggest changes to improve the quality of service.

Getting to know clients and their behavior is essential in the growing process of any company that searches for improvement and business opportunities. One of the ways to discover more about their clientspsila behavior is to analyze the history of their transactions with the company or partners. The amount of transactions is often huge, what demands tools that help explore and analyze data in search for patterns or outliers. The tool used in this paper is called PRISMA and is based on multiple coordinated visualization techniques. Its major goal is to enhance the userpsilas perception about data and what is related to it, identifying problems that might occur during transactions, in order to improve or find business opportunities in them.

A study was undertaken to compare the susceptibility of laboratory-reared female Lutzomyia longipalpis to infection by different species or strains of New World Leishmania. The sand flies proved to be highly susceptible to infection by a strain of Le. guyanensis, with flagellates developing in all (18/18) of the specimens examined. A lower infection rate of 37 per cents (10/27) was recorded in flies exposed to infection by a strain of Le. amazonensis. Flagellates developed in 13 per cents (6/46) of the sand flies that glood fed on dogs in the earlly stage of experimental infection with an old laboratory strain of Le. chagasi. In contrast, promastigotes did not develop in sand flies that blood fed on dogs with naturally acquired Le. chagasi. The naturally infected dogas were in an advanced stage of disease. Flagellates developed in 9// (3/32) of the sand flies that blood fed on lesions of hamsters infected with a strain of Le. braziliensis and in 9 per cents (3/34) of those that fed on hamsters with lesions due to a parasite fo the mexicana complex (strain MHOM/BR/73/BH121). Sand flies did not develop flagellate infections after blood feeding on hamsters bearing lesions induced by strain MHOM/BR/71/BR49. Factors influencing the susceptibility of Lu. longipalpis to infection by New World species of Leishmania are discussed.

Logistics in the food sector have become an increasingly important factor in increasing competitiveness. This paper concludes that despite the vast distribution of technology throughout the food supply industry, rural producers still face many difficulties and challenges in becoming integrated into such new systems. However, the producers who are able to acquire and utilize the new and innovative technologies have been able to build long-term relationships as suppliers to the regional retail chains.

In this paper, we study the application of artificial neural networks to help a power system's operator to diagnose the faults during a disturbance. Towards this goal, an analysis of the training and simulation of an intelligent alarm processor of a simplified power system generation plant is presented in detail. This system is capable of diagnosing not only single faults but also multiple ones, even when the associated alarm set is incomplete. The results obtained demonstrate that neural network is a very powerful and reliable method for the solution of existing problems in power systems. >

The lower eyelid was repaired in 55 cases utilising a triangular flap with a subcutaneous pedicle. Repair was achieved in 39 cases with a triangular flap only and in 16 it was necessary to use a chondromucosal graft of nasal septum as well. The method is described and is feasible for repairs ranging from the simplest to the most complex in different locations of the lid. Praziquantel (PZQ) is the first line drug for the treatment of human Schistosoma spp. worm infections. However, it suffers from low activity towards immature stages of the worm, and its prolonged use induces resistance/tolerance. During the last 40 years, 263 PZQ analogues have been synthesized and tested against Schistosoma spp. worms, but less than 10% of them showed significant activity. Here, we propose a rationalization of the chemical space of the PZQ derivatives by a ligand-based approach. First, we constructed an in-house database with all PZQ derivatives available in the literature. This analysis shows a high heterogeneity in the data. Fortunately, all studies include PZQ as a reference, permitting the classification of compounds into three classes according to their activities. Models involving ligand-based pharmacophore and logistic regression were performed. Five physicochemical parameters were identified as the best to explain the biological activity. In the end, we proposed new PZQ derivatives with modifications at positions 1 and 7, we analysed them with our models, and we observed that they can be more active than the previously synthesized derivatives. The main goal of this work was to conduct the most valuable meta-pharmacometrics/pharmacoinformatics analysis with all Praziquantel medicinal chemistry data available in the literature.
