We present the first measurement of the metallicity gradient in extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs). With Subaru/Faint Object Camera And Spectrograph (FOCAS) Integral Field Unit (IFU), we have observed a nearby, low-mass EMPG, HSC J1631+4426, whose oxygen abundance and stellar mass are known to be 12+log(O/H) $=6.9$ and $\log_{10}(M_*/{\rm M}_\odot)=5.8$, respectively. The measured metallicity gradient is $-0.36 \pm 0.04$ dex kpc$^{-1}$ corresponding to $-0.049 \pm 0.006$ dex R$_\mathrm{e}^{-1}$ for the continuum effective radius of $R_\mathrm{e} = 0.14$ kpc. Our observation has successfully demonstrated that three-dimensional spectroscopy with 8m-class telescopes is powerful enough to reveal the metallicity distribution in local EMPGs, providing precious information of the baryon cycle in local analogs of primordial galaxies in the early Universe., Comment: PASJ accepted, 7 pages, 4 figures

We report the first gas-phase metallicity map of a distant galaxy measured with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). We use the NIRISS slitless spectroscopy acquired by the GLASS Early Release Science program to spatially resolve the rest-frame optical nebular emission lines in a gravitationally lensed galaxy at $z=3.06$ behind the Abell 2744 galaxy cluster. This galaxy (dubbed GLASS-Zgrad1) has stellar mass $\sim10^{8.6} M_\odot$, instantaneous star formation rate $\sim8.6$ $M_\odot$/yr (both corrected for lensing magnification), and global metallicity one-fourth solar. From its emission line maps ([O III], H$\beta$, H$\gamma$, [Ne III], and [O II]) we derive its spatial distribution of gas-phase metallicity using a well-established forward-modeling Bayesian inference method. The exquisite resolution and sensitivity of JWST/NIRISS, combined with lensing magnification, enable us to resolve this $z\sim3$ dwarf galaxy in $\gtrsim$50 resolution elements with sufficient signal, an analysis hitherto not possible. We find that the radial metallicity gradient of GLASS-Zgrad1 is strongly inverted (i.e. positive): $\Delta\log({\rm O/H})/\Delta r$ = $0.165\pm0.023$ $\mathrm{dex~kpc^{-1}}$. This inverted gradient may be due to tidal torques induced by a massive nearby ($\sim$15 kpc projected) galaxy, which can cause inflows of metal-poor gas into the central regions of GLASS-Zgrad1. These first results showcase the power of JWST wide-field slitless spectroscopic modes to resolve the mass assembly and chemical enrichment of low-mass galaxies in and beyond the peak epoch of cosmic star formation ($z\gtrsim2$). We use an unprecedented sample of about 23,000 HII regions detected at an average physical resolution of 67pc in the PHANGS-MUSE sample to study the extragalactic HII region Ha luminosity function (LF). Our observations probe the star-forming disk of 19 nearby spiral galaxies with low inclination and located close to the star formation main sequence at z=0. The mean LF slope $\alpha$ in our sample is =1.73 with a $\sigma$ of 0.15. We find that $\alpha$ decreases with the galaxy's star formation rate surface density and argue that this is driven by an enhanced clustering of young stars at high gas surface densities. Looking at the HII regions within single galaxies we find that no significant variations occur between the LF of the inner and outer part of the star-forming disk, whereas the LF in the spiral arm areas is shallower than in the inter-arm areas for six out of the 13 galaxies with clearly visible spiral arms. We attribute these variations to the spiral arms increasing the molecular clouds arm--inter-arm mass contrast and find suggestive evidence that they are more evident for galaxies with stronger spiral arms. Furthermore, we find systematic variations in $\alpha$ between samples of HII regions with high and low ionization parameter q and argue that they are driven by the aging of HII regions., Comment: Accepted in A&A. We study the effect of the gas accretion rate ($\dot M_{\rm accr}$) on the radial gas metallicity profile (RMP) of galaxies using the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, focusing on central galaxies of stellar mass $M_\star \gtrsim 10^9 \, {\rm M_\odot}$ at $z \le 1$. We find clear relations between $\dot M_{\rm accr}$ and the slope of the RMP (measured within an effective radius), where higher $\dot M_{\rm accr}$ are associated with more negative slopes. The slope of the RMPs depends more strongly on $\dot M_{\rm accr}$ than on stellar mass, star formation rate or gas fraction, suggesting $\dot M_{\rm accr}$ to be a more fundamental driver of the RMP slope of galaxies. We find that eliminating the dependence on stellar mass is essential for pinning down the properties that shape the slope of the RMP. Although $\dot M_{\rm accr}$ is the main property modulating the slope of the RMP, we find that it causes other correlations that are more easily testable observationally: at fixed stellar mass, galaxies with more negative RMP slopes tend to have higher gas fractions and SFRs, while galaxies with lower gas fractions and SFRs tend to have flatter metallicity profiles within an effective radius., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. We report one of the first extragalactic observations of electron temperature variations across a spiral arm. Using MUSE mosaic observations of the nearby galaxy NGC 1672, we measure the [N II]5755 auroral line in a sample of 80 HII regions in the eastern spiral arm of NGC1672. We discover systematic temperature variations as a function of distance perpendicular to the spiral arm. The electron temperature is lowest on the spiral arm itself and highest on the downstream side. Photoionization models of different metallicity, pressure, and age of the ionizing source are explored to understand what properties of the interstellar medium drive the observed temperature variations. An azimuthally varying metallicity appears to be the most likely cause of the temperature variations. The electron temperature measurements solidify recent discoveries of azimuthal variations of oxygen abundance based on strong lines, and rule out the possibility that the abundance variations are artefacts of the strong-line calibrations., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure, accepted to ApJ Letter

Precise stellar ages from asteroseismology have become available and can help setting stronger constraints on the evolution of the Galactic disc components. Recently, asteroseismology has confirmed a clear age difference in the solar annulus between two distinct sequences in the [$\alpha$/Fe] versus [Fe/H] abundance ratios relation: the high-$\alpha$ and low-$\alpha$ stellar populations. We aim at reproducing these new data with chemical evolution models including different assumptions for the history and number of accretion events. We tested two different approaches: a revised version of the `two-infall' model where the high-$\alpha$ phase forms by a fast gas accretion episode and the low-$\alpha$ sequence follows later from a slower gas infall rate, and the parallel formation scenario where the two disc sequences form coevally and independently. The revised `two-infall' model including uncertainties in age and metallicity is capable of reproducing: i) the [$\alpha$/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] abundance relation at different Galactic epochs, ii) the age$-$metallicity relation and the time evolution [$\alpha$/Fe]; iii) the age distribution of the high-$\alpha$ and low-$\alpha$ stellar populations, iv) the metallicity distribution function. The parallel approach is not capable of properly reproduce the stellar age distribution, in particular at old ages. In conclusion, the best chemical evolution model is the revised `two-infall' one, where a consistent delay of $\sim$4.3 Gyr in the beginning of the second gas accretion episode is a crucial assumption to reproduce stellar abundances and ages., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A; 20 pages, 20 figures

We have computed the Galactic Habitable Zones (GHZs) of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) based on the probability of terrestrial planet formation, which depends on the metallicity (Z) of the interstellar medium, and the number of stars formed per unit surface area. The GHZ was obtained from a chemical evolution model built to reproduce a metallicity gradient in the galactic disk, [O/H](r)=-0.015 dex kpc(-1) x r (kpc) + 0.44 dex. If we assume that Earth-like planets form with a probability law that follows the Z distribution shown by stars with detected planets, the most probable GHZ per pc(2) is located between 3 and 7 kpc for planets with ages between 6 and 7 Gyr. However, the highest number of stars with habitable planets is located in a ring between 12 and 14 kpc with a mean age of 7 Gyr. 11% and 6.5% of the all formed stars in M31 may have planets capable of hosting basic and complex life, respectively.

Aims. This is the first paper of a series that aims to understand the formation and evolution of bars in early-type spirals and their influence in the evolution of the galaxy.Methods. Optical long-slit spectra along the bar major-axis of a sample of 20 galaxies are analyzed. Velocity and velocity dispersion profiles along the bar are presented. Line-strength indices in the bar region are also measured to derive stellar mean-age and metallicity distributions along the bars using stellar population models.Results. We obtain mean ages, metallicities and chemical abundances along the bar of 20 galaxies with morphological types from SB0 to SBbc. The main result is that we find a large variation in age and metallicity along the bar in 45% of our sample. We find three different types of bars according to their metallicity and age distribution along the radius: 1) Bars with negative metallicity gradients. They show a mean young/intermediate population (Conclusions. The stellar metallicity gradients of disc galaxies provide information on the disc assembly, star formation processes and chemical evolution. They also might store information on dynamical processes which could affect the distribution of chemical elements in the gas-phase and the stellar components. We studied the stellar metallicity gradients of stellar discs in a cosmological simulation. We explored the dependence of the stellar metallicity gradients on stellar age and the size and mass of the stellar discs. We used galaxies selected from a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation performed including a physically-motivated Supernova feedback and chemical evolution. The metallicity profiles were estimated for stars with different ages. We confront our numerical findings with results from the CALIFA Survey. The simulated stellar discs are found to have metallicity profiles with slopes in global agreement with observations. Low stellar-mass galaxies tend to have a larger variety of metallicity slopes. When normalized by the half-mass radius, the stellar metallicity gradients do not show any dependence and the dispersion increases significantly, regardless of galaxy mass. Galaxies with stellar masses around $10^{10}$M$_{\odot}$ show steeper negative metallicity gradients. The stellar metallicity gradients correlate with the half-mass radius. However, the correlation signal is not present when they are normalized by the half-mass radius. Stellar discs with positive age gradients are detected to have negative and positive metallicity gradients, depending on the relative importance of the recent star formation activity in the central regions. The large dispersions in the metallicity gradients as a function of stellar mass could be ascribed to the effects of dynamical processes such as mergers/interactions and/or migration as well as those regulating the conversion of gas into stars. The results from the metallicity and age gradients indicate that most galaxies with high central stellar velocity dispersion host bars that could have been formed more than 3 Gyrs ago, while galaxies with lower central velocity dispersions show a wider distribution in their population and age gradients.
