The physical characteristics, soil structure, vegetation, climatic conditions, and geological structures of the floating islands in Işıklı Lake, Saklıgöl, and Karagöl located within the borders of Denizli province were examined. Additionally, the effects of environmental factors on the chemical and biological properties of these lakes were investigated. According to the research findings, 11 different benthic invertebrate species were identified. While the water quality of Işıklı Lake and Karagöl was evaluated as "Good," Saklıgöl's water quality was measured at a "Moderate" level. Habitats such as mud, algae, moss, and macrophytes stand out in the lake areas. The relationship between temperature and dissolved oxygen levels was examined, revealing that increasing water temperature reduces dissolved oxygen levels. There were variations in ammonium nitrogen content in the examined lakes, indicating the significant impact of agricultural activities, particularly in Işıklı Lake and Saklıgöl. Karagöl's lower ammonium nitrogen content demonstrates the influence of environmental factors. The correlation between lake areas and environmental factors was emphasized, highlighting the impact of wind on the vegetation of floating islands. Countries with heterogeneous climatic and geographic characteristics may find it challenging and limiting to fulfill the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD), such as defining ecoregion and water body types. To overcome this limitation, they implement optional factors in addition to the obligatory factors defined in the WFD. As a candidate country, Türkiye is required to comply with the WFD requirements and must determine its own optional and obligatory factors. In this context, we addressed the relevance of Chironomus spp. in determining these factors. We used twenty distinct national lake typologies for Türkiye and identified a total of 24 Chironomus species. The Chironomus genus was found to be effective in determining the optional factors. Statistical analyses revealed that fetch, altitude, salinity, water temperature, pH, saturated and dissolved oxygen, conductivity, orthophosphate, ferrous ion, chloride, and nitrogen compounds were significant in discriminating the regions. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) explained 56.62% of the variance. We also statistically analyzed the effectiveness of the class boundaries of the obligatory factors used in Türkiye for regionalization. Among the official obligatory factors, only the altitude boundaries gave a significant result and explained a total of 62% variance. Larvae of the chironomid genus Heterotrissocladius and its species H. marcidus are recorded in Turkey for the first time. The chironomid samples were collected from natural lake Nazlıgöl in Yedigöller National Park located in the northern part of Bolu Province. Deronectes toledoi Fery, Erman and Hosseinie, 2001 (Dytiscidae) is an endemic aquatic beetle only known from Turkey (Erzurum, Toprakkale). Relatively little has been learned about this beetle since it was discovered. We conducted a study to determine some bio-ecological characteristics of D. toledoi and determine the impact of physico-chemical parameters on aquatic Coleoptera species diversity. Mature specimens of aquatic Coleoptera were collected once a month from vegetated part of the brook running parallel to the Erzurum-İspir road around Erzurum, Aziziye district, Toprakkale Village during March November 2009 period and were assessed in relation to environmental variables. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) showed that water temperature, dissolved oxygen and calcium explained 82 % of the taxa variance of the creek. Not only these parameters but also air temperature and precipitation were also found out to be important factors for the ecology of D. toledoi. Higher evenness in the creek showed that D. toledoi was not a dominant species but its tolerance to environmental parameters was higher than other species in the creek. This study was conducted to take a step to understand the habitat preferences of D. toledoi but further multidisciplinary studies of the biological diversity in streams, which are important for natural conservation, are necessary to understand the ecology of rare and endemic species.
