Kamasi Washington, a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader, has released his new double album titled "Fearless Movement" after a two-year break due to the pandemic. The album features a diverse range of music and includes contributions from over two dozen musicians. Washington's experience of becoming a father during the album's creation influenced its energy and marked a new chapter in his music. The album showcases the talents of Washington's close-knit group of musicians, some of whom have known each other since childhood. It also includes guest vocals from George Clinton and rapper D Smoke, as well as a flute performance by André 3000. Described as dance music, but not in the traditional sense, the album represents the forward motion Washington has experienced since becoming a father and is more akin to modern ballet. It features intense saxophone work, impressive trombone and trumpet solos, and dense, propulsive tracks. Some have compared the album to spiritual jazz from the mid-60s to 80s, while others see similarities to Weather Report. Washington prefers to work in a physical studio space with other musicians, as he believes there is a special magic that happens when they are all together. Despite his success, Washington remains focused on the future and discovering new places and ideas in his music. [Extracted from the article]

Cover crops improve soil fertility in orchard ecosystems, however, the response of soil microbial metabolism to fruit tree interactions with cover legumes at different stages of the life cycle remains uncertain, thereby limiting our understanding of the mechanisms that regulate nutrient cycling in orchards with cover crop management. Here, the characteristics of microbial energy (carbon, C) and nutrient (nitrogen, N or phosphorus, P) metabolism in the citrus rhizosphere and bulk soil in orchards were analyzed with two managements, that is, smooth vetch (Vicia villosa Roth var. glabresens Koch) cover and clean tillage, using an extracellular enzymatic stoichiometry model. Microbial C limitation was significantly reduced by cover during the vetch growing season owing to the resulting higher plant root C and soil organic C content. Competition for N between plants and microbes in the bulk soil might lead to significant microbial N limitation in covered orchards during the vetch-decomposition season, presumably owing to a significant increase in citrus root N and a concomitant decrease in bulk soil total N. Partial least squares path modeling showed that citrus root nutrient contents negatively affected microbial C limitation, while soil nutrients negatively affected microbial relative nutrient limitation in covered orchards. Conversely, both effects were reversed by tillage. Smooth vetch cover mitigated microbial C limitation, and the microbial relative N/P limitation was also influenced by the life state of smooth vetch. Our study highlights the importance of changes in microbial metabolism driven by seasonal nutrient dynamics for understanding soil nutrient cycling and optimizing cover-legumes management in orchards. In three studies, we examine the effect of music album artwork on album market performance and music consumption. Based on the perceptual preference for visual stimuli with cardinal (orthogonal) over oblique (tilted) line/edge orientations (a phenomenon known as the "oblique effect"), albums with a predominance of cardinal line/edge orientations in their artwork should perform better than albums with more oblique artwork, as indicated by the albums' market performance and consumers' listening behavior. Study 1, using secondary data, shows that the cardinality of album artwork is a positive predictor of the cover's esthetic appeal and of market performance as evinced by its position in the US charts, expert ratings of the album, and the number of weeks the album remained in the US charts. Studies 2 and 3 use experiments to show that consumers listen longer to music when album artwork is relatively more cardinal than oblique. These studies also explore whether the effect is mediated by higher esthetic appreciation of cardinal (vs. oblique) album artwork in turn affecting song liking. Overall, these findings underscore the importance of visual preferences in packaging design for music consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

By the time that the Shadows and the Ventures broke big on both sides of the Atlantic in 1960, so-called "teenage music" was being taken seriously enough for record labels to put some real effort into the visual appeal of its packaging. The pages that follow are a sampling of the artwork and design that accompanied the music. Most movies and television for teens were still in black and white in those days, but their music could be delivered in colorful packaging as modern as the music. In the United States, long playing album covers got the most attention from art departments, though young audiences bought far more singles, making many early albums now quite rare. Singles were popular overseas too, but the 7" 45 rpm extended play or "EP" disc that offered four songs in colorful eye-catching laminated cardboard sleeves were also a major format. But this format was not as popular in the States. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the cover image of the journal Cultural Dynamics, which features an illustration titled "Snapshots of Madrid's Rastro" by the art collective VenidaDevenida. The image incorporates various symbols and objects found in Madrid's oldest flea market, including cultural artifacts, vintage items, and collectibles. The article explores the significance and implications of these objects, such as the representation of the Mafalda comic strip character and the Conguitos mascot logo. It raises questions about the historical and racial connotations associated with these symbols and encourages further interpretation and critical examination. [Extracted from the article]

This study analyzes late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century photographs in a family album belonging to Roman Jews. The album was compiled at a crucial moment for Italy and for Italian Jews: after the wake of Italy's national unification. For many Roman Jews the risorgimento and Italian unification in 1870 resulted in liberation from crushing poverty, disease, and abuses under the papal state. These years coincided with the invention and development of photography. This article explores how Jewish emancipation and liberation from ghetto life, alongside the rise of photography, influenced the construction of images and photographic portraits of Roman Jews through the analysis of one family album. COVID-19 pandemic , *READING promotion , *COFFEE growing , *TRANSLATING & interpreting , *FOOD habits , *HISTORY of anthropology , *ALBUM cover art - Abstract
Issue 22.1 of the LiminaR. Social and Humanistic Studies magazine highlights the participation of artist Juan José Pale Martínez on the cover and illustrations of each article. The issue includes 12 articles and three reviews that address a variety of topics and disciplines, such as anthropology, history, economics, sociology, politics, linguistics, archaeology, pedagogy, literature, and arts. Some of the articles focus on the cultural appropriation of coffee cultivation in Chiapas, the healthy eating of coffee-growing families during the COVID-19 pandemic, the didactics of translation and interpretation at the Universidad Veracruzana, the evaluation of preschool educators in private schools, and the promotion of reading among women in the outskirts of Xalapa. The first article presents a case study on a free reading workshop for women in the outskirts of Atenas Veracruzana. The study shows that literary texts can generate reflections on gender issues and that workshops in peripheral areas can increase interest in reading. Another article analyzes how reading and writing can empower women with autoimmune diseases. In the field of law, a case of recognition of collective property of indigenous peoples in Nicaragua is examined. Other articles deal with the guerrilla movement in Mexico, the palm industry in Guatemala, Maya biocultural heritage, migration policy in Mexico, and book reviews on cultural and environmental studies in southern Mexico. ORCHESTRA , *ALBUM cover art , *MUSICAL instruments , *CARIBBEAN music - Abstract
This article analyzes the album cover visuality of the tropical music orchestra Pedro Laza y sus pelayeros in Colombia (1954–1973) with other "sabanero sound" orchestras of the time, such as La Sonora Cordobesa (1959–1969), the orchestra of Clímaco Sarmiento, and big-band sound orchestras, such as that of Lucho Bermúdez. This corpus's graphic, geographic, and racial symbolisms form racial tensions similar to a "contact zone" in which different visual and sonic expectations interact. My analysis shows that, unlike a sonic color line, there is not one single public this music is oriented toward, nor a type of racial representation linked to one single consumer expectation. Instead, I find a series of tensions in the use of white-mestizo and Black bodies and geographical references. My analysis supports two arguments: one, that bodies of color appear metonymized in musical instruments to authenticate geographically, racially, and generically-sexually the Caribbean rhythms as "Black" and "hot." Metonymies are one of the ways the recording industry "tropicalizes" the Colombian Caribbean. I explore other strategies, such as portraying rural environments with an intent to appeal to wider audiences, both rural and urban. Two, the woman's figure as a "modern girl" authorizes the mass consumption of this music in mestizo and creole layers of the Colombian urban middle class and nationalizes the idea of Colombian mestizaje as an unmixed racial juxtaposition. ALBUM cover art , *MUSICAL criticism , *POPULAR music , *AUTHORSHIP , *YOUNG artists , *SYMBOLISM - Abstract
In recent years, Björk has defied pop music criticism's persistent myth of male genius by asserting her authorship as a singer, songwriter, composer, and producer. She expressed these concerns during a 2015 Pitchfork interview with Jessica Hopper by reflecting on the press's minimization of her production work throughout her career and her desire to reclaim her creative authority as a model for younger female-identified artists. During this portion of the conversation, she mused, "I've sometimes thought about releasing a map of all my albums and just making it clear who did what." Her impulse to challenge masculinist creation myths through documentation became the catalyst for Björk: Sonic Symbolism, a 2022 podcast miniseries sponsored by Mailchimp in which she discussed her albums' creative processes with friends Oddny' Eir and A' smundur Jo'nson in a series of interviews. The title, which Björk defines as "a visual shortcut to describe sound," provides the podcast's framework for her articulation of authorial control, which she examines through album art that illustrates each cover's mood and character; poetic synopses of each album's unique audiovisual language; and references to her various studio, video, and stage collaborators. By using close listening to examine Björk's conversations with Eir and Jo'nson and the episodes' illustrative song segments, this article posits that Björk's engagement with podcasting as an audio storytelling medium allows her to foreground her distinct speaking and singing voice as both a feminist intervention upon the recording industry and as a sonic metaphor for authorial control. HORSES , *GAZE , *ALBUM cover art - Abstract
A sketch for the cover of the second East German edition to Pippi Langstrumpf (1988) showing a girl standing on her head on horseback is the starting point for this article. It was drawn by Cornelia Ellinger, only one year before the fall of the Berlin wall. The sketch becomes a starting point for a discussion of humor and materiality in the reception of Pippi in the GDR. Just as the cover frames and delimits the text, our preconceptions frame our gaze and affect what we can see. However, this act is not just something that is imposed on us but an invitation to act ourselves, which makes issues of illustration, color choice and book format particularly important in a monolithic society, in an attempt to steer the reader's attention in a desired direction. The discussed sketch was never printed. Instead, the publisher chose a more blatantly humorous image. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
