Algae biotechnology holds immense promise for revolutionizing the bioeconomy through the sustainable and scalable production of various bioproducts. However, their development has been hindered by the lack of advanced genetic tools. This study introduces a synthetic biology approach to develop such tools, focusing on the construction and testing of synthetic promoters. By analyzing conserved DNA motifs within the promoter regions of highly expressed genes across six different algal species, we identified cis-regulatory elements (CREs) associated with high transcriptional activity. Combining the algorithms POWRS, STREME, and PhyloGibbs, we predicted 1511 CREs and inserted them into a minimal synthetic promoter sequence in 1, 2, or 3 copies, resulting in 4533 distinct synthetic promoters. These promoters were evaluated in vivo for their capacity to drive the expression of a transgene in a high-throughput manner through next-generation sequencing post antibiotic selection and fluorescence-activated cell sorting. To validate our approach, we sequenced hundreds of transgenic lines showing high levels of GFP expression. Further, we individually tested 14 identified promoters, revealing substantial increases in GFP expression─up to nine times higher than the baseline synthetic promoter, with five matching or even surpassing the performance of the native AR1 promoter. As a result of this study, we identified a catalog of CREs that can now be used to build superior synthetic algal promoters. More importantly, here we present a validated pipeline to generate building blocks for innovative synthetic genetic tools applicable to any algal species with a sequenced genome and transcriptome data set.

This capstone project is a completed draft of an illustrated field guide of Southern California seaweeds. The purpose of this was to create a region-specific and user-friendly guide for readers to learn about local seaweeds. This was done by collecting life specimens and illustrating them by hand with watercolor. The illustrations were digitized and put into a draft, along with supporting information about each species. The completed draft will be prepared and submitted for publication in print.

This poster was presented at the 2024 UCSB EEMB Research symposium.Algae plays a crucial role in aquatic ecosystems, serving as both a primary producer through photosynthesis and a food source and habitat for macroinvertebrates, which in turn supports larger organisms. The abundance and composition of algae and macroinvertebrates are influenced by environmental factors such as salinity, temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen.This ongoing study investigates the dynamics of a temporary open-closed estuary in the North Campus Open Space Devereux Slough. Monthly water quality data and algae samples are collected from three sites to assess the types of algae present and variations in macroinvertebrate abundance. Preliminary findings reveal several genera of algae, including but not limited to Tribomena, Phormidium, Ulva, and Oscillatoria. Tribomena exhibits the highest abundance of macroinvertebrates and species diversity. These findings have enabled a more targeted exploration into local microalgal salinity tolerance, primarily through measurements of algal cell wall density, extent of motion, and color in response to regularly increasing salt concentration. Algae samples were collected from Phelps Bridge and introduced to a controlled aquarium environment in which oxygen and temperature levels were kept relatively constant, while 0.25 ppt of salt was introduced to the system every three days over the course of seven weeks. After each addition, the cell structures and behavior of the algae were examined with microscopy. This yielded results aligning with expectations of algal health deterioration with higher salinity. This research highlights the complex interactions between algae, macroinvertebrates, and environmental factors in estuarine ecosystems.

This poster was presented at the 2024 UCSB EEMB Research symposium.This project investigates how water quality metrics correlate with seasonal changes in algal and aquatic vegetation abundance via close-range and satellite imagery analysis at the Devereux Slough. The Devereux Slough, part of UCSB’s North Campus Open Space (NCOS), is a temporary open/closed estuary undergoing restoration efforts following its previous use as a golf course. The Devereux Slough provides buffer area for storm surges and sea level rise, and it functions as a wildlife corridor linking protected lands. The Aquatic Invertebrate Lab at the NCOS evaluates wetland function in terms of nutrient filtering and support for wildlife. We analyze the effects of restoration on the ecosystem, abiotic factors on aquatic food webs, and the relationship between nutrient pulses and algal blooms. We deployed camera stands at bridges across NCOS to research algal growth through photography where Coastsnap is used to catalog images taken by citizen scientists. We then use ENVI and Adobe Photoshop to divide photographs into quadrats and analyze the algal cover based on pixel cover. We have Solinst leveloggers deployed near each site which collect water level, temperature, and in some cases, conductivity. We also investigate how aquatic vegetation density shifts spatially and temporally at the Devereux Slough from 2022-2024. We isolate spectral bands from monthly PlanetLabs satellite imagery and apply the normalized difference aquatic vegetation index function in R. We are interested in how plant health varies between longer- and shorter-term restoration sites and with water quality metrics taken by Solinst leveloggers.

Successful acclimation to copper (Cu) deficiency involves a fine balance between Cu import and export. In the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Cu import is dependent on a transcription factor, Copper Response Regulator 1 (CRR1), responsible for activating genes in Cu-deficient cells. Among CRR1 target genes are two Cu transporters belonging to the CTR/COPT gene family (CTR1 and CTR2) and a related soluble protein (CTR3). The ancestor of these green algal proteins was likely acquired from an ancient chytrid and contained conserved cysteine-rich domains (named the CTR-associated domains, CTRA) that are predicted to be involved in Cu acquisition. We show by reverse genetics that Chlamydomonas CTR1 and CTR2 are canonical Cu importers albeit with distinct affinities, while loss of CTR3 did not result in an observable phenotype under the conditions tested. Mutation of CTR1, but not CTR2, recapitulates the poor growth of crr1 in Cu-deficient medium, consistent with a dominant role for CTR1 in high-affinity Cu(I) uptake. On the other hand, the overaccumulation of Cu(I) (20 times the quota) in zinc (Zn) deficiency depends on CRR1 and both CTR1 and CTR2. CRR1-dependent activation of CTR gene expression needed for Cu over-accumulation can be bypassed by the provision of excess Cu in the growth medium. Over-accumulated Cu is sequestered into the acidocalcisome but can become remobilized by restoring Zn nutrition. This mobilization is also CRR1-dependent, and requires activation of CTR2 expression, again distinguishing CTR2 from CTR1 and consistent with the lower substrate affinity of CTR2.One sentence summaryRegulation of Cu uptake and sequestration by members of the CTR family of proteins in Chlamydomonas.

Our reliance on agriculture for sustenance, healthcare, and resources has been essential since the dawn of civilization. However, traditional agricultural practices are no longer adequate to meet the demands of a burgeoning population amidst climate-driven agricultural challenges. Microalgae emerge as a beacon of hope, offering a sustainable and renewable source of food, animal feed, and energy. Their rapid growth rates, adaptability to non-arable land and non-potable water, and diverse bioproduct range, encompassing biofuels and nutraceuticals, position them as a cornerstone of future resource management. Furthermore, microalgaes ability to capture carbon aligns with environmental conservation goals. While microalgae offers significant benefits, obstacles in cost-effective biomass production persist, which curtails broader application. This review examines microalgae compared to other host platforms, highlighting current innovative approaches aimed at overcoming existing barriers. These approaches include a range of techniques, from gene editing, synthetic promoters, and mutagenesis to selective breeding and metabolic engineering through transcription factors.

Amphibian larvae can affect the structure and functioning of freshwater ecosystems, but their effects have been little explored although amphibian biodiversity is rapidly declining. Given that larvae of different amphibian species belong to different trophic levels, their effects on freshwater communities and processes can be expected to differ, with herbivores likely having direct effects on algae and predators having indirect effects through trophic cascades. We explored this question through a mesocosm experiment conducted in montane ponds, using an anuran and a urodele species affected by emergent diseases. We used different scenarios of reduction and loss of one or both species, and compared them to a control scenario representing a typical amphibian community in the study area composed of four species, with total larval density held constant. Loss of the anuran resulted in lower chlorophyll concentration and algal density, likely due to replacement by more efficient grazers. Loss of the urodele produced similar trends but weaker, possibly due to an increase of invertebrate grazing activity in the absence of this predator. Our study shows how the loss of amphibian species can alter the structure of montane ponds, but also how the mechanisms involved and the intensity of effects differ for different species. The consumers’ appreciation and preference for products containing seaweed, as a natural alternative to synthetic cosmetics, has been ever growing in recent years. They are subjected to high expectations in terms of contents, such as purified bio active substances. Seaweed’s chemical compounds’ effectiveness in cosmetics is already known and they are successfully applied as effective alternatives with visible benefits. The varying species of algae have numerous beneficial properties for the skin. The bio-activeness of their compounds, such as carbohydrates, proteins, phenolic compounds and pigments have been researched and proven to be safe for use in the cosmetic industry. The following overview will explore the proof of the biological properties and various applications of bio-active molecules, derived from seaweed and their application in the cosmetic industry. This study delves into biodiesel synthesis from non-edible oils and algae oil sources using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model to optimize biodiesel yield. Blend of C. vulgaris and Karanja oils is utilized, aiming to reduce free fatty acid content to 1% through single-step transesterification. Optimization reveals peak biodiesel yield conditions: 1% catalyst quantity, 91.47 min reaction time, 56.86°C reaction temperature, and 8.46:1 methanol to oil molar ratio. The ANN model outperforms RSM in yield prediction accuracy. Environmental impact assessment yields an E-factor of 0.0251 at maximum yield, indicating responsible production with minimal waste. Economic analysis reveals significant cost savings: 30%–50% reduction in raw material costs by using non-edible oils, 10%–15% increase in production efficiency, 20% reduction in catalyst costs, and 15%–20% savings in energy consumption. The optimized process reduces waste disposal costs by 10%–15%, enhancing overall economic viability. Overall, the widespread adoption of biodiesel offers economic, environmental, and social benefits to a diverse range of stakeholders, including farmers, producers, consumers, governments, environmental organizations, and the transportation industry. Antibiotic contamination from hospitals, animal husbandry, and municipal wastewater is graver than imagined, and it possess serious risks to the health of humans and animals, with the emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria; those affect the growth of higher plants too. Conventional wastewater treatment methods adopted today are inadequate for removing antibiotics from wastewater. Intuitively, the remediation process using mixed algae should be effective enough, for which algae-based remediation technologies have emerged as sustainable remedial methods. This review summarized the detection of antibiotics in field water in most countries; a comprehensive overview of algae-based technologies, algal adsorption, accumulation, biodegradation, photodegradation, hydrolysis, and the use of algae-bacteria consortia for the remediation of antibiotics in wastewaters in done. Green algae namely, Chlamydomonas sp., Chlorella sp., C. vulgaris, Spyrogira sp. Scenedesmus quadricauda, S. obliquus, S. dimorphus, Haematoccus pluvialis, and Nannochlopsis sp., had been reporting have 90–100% antibiotic removal efficiency. The integration of bioelectrochemical systems and genetically engineered prokaryotic algal species offer promising avenues for improving antibiotic removal in the future. Overall, this review highlights the need for tenacious research and development of algae-based technologies to reduce antibiotic contamination in aquatic environments, for holistic good. Aurantiochytrium sp. is a marine microalga known for its bioactive compounds. This study assessed its presence in Iran and investigated its specific biochemical and molecular traits. Parameters such as biomass, protein content, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, catalase enzyme (CAT) activity, and expression of malic enzyme (ME) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) genes were analyzed at different growth stages (24, 48, 72, and 96 h). Fatty acid composition, unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) and saturated fatty acids (SFA) contents, and the ratio of UFA to SFA were also examined. Molecular identification confirmed successful proliferation, with significant increases in biomass and protein content during growth. Elevated H2O2 and MDA levels indicated oxidative stress, whereas enhanced CAT activity suggested its potential role in scavenging reactive oxygen species and mitigating oxidative damage. The upregulation of ME and ACCase genes during growth indicated their involvement in lipid biosynthesis. This was further supported by the analysis of fatty acid composition, which revealed a higher proportion of UFA than SFA. These findings underscore the importance of specific growth stages for optimizing cultivation conditions and maximizing bioactive compound production in Aurantiochytrium sp. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the growth dynamics and lipid metabolism of Aurantiochytrium sp., contributing to our understanding of its potential applications. Depletion of conventional energy resources necessitates the exploration of new alternative raw materials for sustainable biofuel production to improve socio-economic development. This research focuses on the cultivation of specific algae varieties, biomass quantification, fatty acid profiling, and their potential application in biodiesel production. The study examines diverse emerging algal species, including Ulothrix, Stigeoclonium, Chlorellavulgaris, Cladophora, Oedogonium, Oscillatoria, Spirogyra, and H.reticulatum. Over a 4-week cultivation period, all species demonstrated increased dry biomass, with Ulothrix exhibiting the maximum growth (19 g) and Stigeoclonium the minimum (5 g). Lipid composition analysis by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) indicated varying percentages (% DW) among strains, with Ulothrix sp. displaying the highest lipid content (62.4%). Lipid yields, crucial for biodiesel, followed the order: Ulothrix > Stigeoclonium > C.vulgaris > Cladophora sp. > Oedogonium > Oscillatoria > Spirogyra sp. > H.reticulatum. Further analysis of fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) composition using GC–MS revealed 24 detected FAMEs, with percentage ranges for specific fatty acids. The total FAMEs yield reached approximately 98% (w/w) from algal biodiesel, showcasing variations in saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated FAMEs content among strains. Fatty acid profiles, emphasizing linoleic, stearic, and oleic acids, were analyzed, identifying Cladophora sp., Chlorellavulgaris, and Stigeoclonium sp. as promising biodiesel candidates based on growth rates and fuel properties. All algal strains met or exceeded specifications, except for H.reticulatum in cetane number. Despite highlighting challenges in large-scale algal cultivation for cost-effective biomass production, this study underscores the potential of expanding the algae biorefinery value chain to include advanced biofuels and valuable co-products, presenting a significant global impact on the gross domestic product. In coastal environments, eutrophication and ocean acidification both decrease pH, impacting the abiotic conditions experienced by marine life. Infaunal invertebrates are exposed to lower pH conditions than epifauna, as porewater pH is typically lower than the overlying water. We investigated the effects of altering sediment carbonate chemistry, through the addition of transplanted green algae and/or crushed shell hash, on an infaunal community. This factorial field experiment was conducted on an intertidal mudflat in the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick, from July to September of 2020. After 1 month, sediment pH was increased across all depths (0.09 ± 0.03 pH units, or 0.84–2.5%) by the shell hash, but was not affected by the algae, while the multivariate community composition was impacted by an interaction between algae and experimental block (6.9% of variation) as well as shell hash treatment (2.7% of variation). After month 2, all responses to the treatments disappeared, likely due to tidal currents washing away some of the shell hash and algae, suggesting reapplication of the treatments is needed. Most of the variation in the community composition was explained by spatial variation in the treatment replicates among the treatment blocks (33.5% of variation). Despite the small effects of the experimental treatments on sediment carbonate chemistry, distance-based linear modeling indicated that sediment pH may be an important driver of variation in the infaunal community. Given the complexity of the processes driving sediment chemistry in coastal environments, further experiments exploring changing environmental conditions that drive infaunal marine community structure are required. Arctic freshwater ecosystems are on the “frontline” of climate change, but due to a lack of direct long‐term monitoring data, indirect approaches, such as algal‐based paleolimnology, must be used to reconstruct past limnological conditions. Our understanding of the responses of small‐ to mid‐sized Arctic lakes to climate warming has increased over the last ~30 years. However, until recently, little was known about even the basic limnological conditions of Canada's “Northern Great Lakes,” such as Lake Hazen, Great Bear Lake, and Great Slave Lake. In this summary, we show that a continuum of algal changes, observable in the sedimentary archives of shallow ponds to very large Arctic lakes, signals the crossing of key aquatic thresholds linked to changing ice covers and thermal regimes, declining wind speeds, and other climate‐related variables. With recent accelerated warming, even the largest and most resilient Arctic waterbodies are now fundamentally different than they were just a few decades ago. BACKGROUND: Conventional petroleum‐based packaging films cause severe environmental problems. In the present study, bio‐edible film was introduced as being safe to replace petroleum‐based polymers. A food application for edible sachets and a composite edible film (EF) from marine algae, Gracilaria fisheri (GF) extract, were proposed. RESULTS: Carbohydrates were the most prevalent component in fresh GF fronds. Under neutral conditions comprising 90 °C for 40 min, the structure of the extract was determined by Fourier transform infrared to be a carrageenan‐like polysaccharide. Glycerol was the best plasticizer for EF formation because it had the highest tensile strength (TS). The integration of gelatin into the algal composite film with gelatin (CFG) was validated to be significant. The best casting temperatures for 2 h were 70 and 100 °C among the four tested temperatures (25, 60, 70 and 100 °C). Temperatures did not result in any significant (P ≤ 0.05) differences in any character (color values, TS, water vapor permeability, oxygen transmission, thickness and water activity), except elongation at break. Visually, the CFG had a slightly yellow appearance. The best‐to‐worst order of film stability in the three tested solvents was oil, distilled water (DW) and ethanol. Its stability in ethanol (0–100%), temperature of DW (30–100 °C) and pH (3–7 in DW) demonstrated inverse relationships with the concentration or different conditions, except for pH 8–10 in DW. All treatments were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) different. CONCLUSION: The novel material made from polysaccharides from algae, G. fisheri, was used to improve EF. This study set out to provide a preliminary assessment of nutritional profiles of five selected New Zealand macroalgae to investigate the potential of landcultivated Ulva spp. The New Zealand seaweeds species, selected from a limited range, were either collected from the wild (Pyropia plicata from Tauranga and Kaikōura), or were sourced from commercial wild harvest suppliers (Macrocystis pyrifera and Undaria pinnatifida), and were compared to land-based cultivated Ulva species (Ulva ralfsii and Ulva stenophylloides). Species were assessed for their content of crude protein, total lipids, carbohydrates, fibers, amino acids, mineral profiles, heavy metals and antioxidant capacity (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, ORAC). The two cultivated Ulva spp. had the highest crude protein content of the six seaweeds analyzed (approximately 21% dw, N×6.25), as expected with nutrient supplemented cultivation. They also had the highest total, essential and branched chain amino acid quantities (151, 70, and 29 mg/g for U. stenophylloides and 138, 62, and 27 mg/g for U. ralfsii). Though the two Ulva spp. were grown to the same cultivation specifications, they varied in carbohydrate and total fiber content (U. stenophylloides: 63% and 62%; U. ralfsii: 39% and 40%, respectively). Pyropia plicata collected in Kaikōura had the highest carbohydrate levels (65%) though not the highest total fiber. Both P. plicata had the highest trace minerals (417 mg/kg and 720 mg/kg for Kaikōura and Tauranga P. plicata respectively). All seaweeds analyzed showed no lipophilic antioxidants, though the two Phaeophyceae had the highest hydrophilic antioxidant content at 115 TE and 168 TE for Macrocystis pyrifera and Undaria pinnatifida, respectively. This paper provides a preliminary indication of the relative nutritional attributes of a range of potential New Zealand seaweed aquaculture targets benchmarked against sealettuce (Ulva spp.). Dual nomenclature as applied to dinoflagellates is underpinned by conceptual and practical considerations. It allows the separate naming of fossil- and non-fossil species even when they are linked to one another by incubation studies and other techniques. It is needed because fossil- and non-fossil taxonomies are based on different stages of the life cycle and cannot be integrated at the generic level. All taxonomists today who study dinoflagellates, whether living or fossil, place their work under the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. The Shenzhen Code and its predecessors have supported dual nomenclature implicitly with the help of examples, but without clear explanation of what it is and how it works. In Madrid, Spain in July 2024, the Nomenclature Section of the XX International Botanical Congress approved two new articles for the Code that remove earlier contradictions and introduced dual nomenclature explicitly, drawing on a critical distinction between ‘synonymy’ and the new concept and term ‘taxonomic equivalence’. These changes will be incorporated into the forthcoming Madrid Code. The process of oxygenic photosynthesis is primarily driven by two multiprotein complexes known as photosystem II (PSII) and photosystem I (PSI). PSII facilitates the light-induced reactions of water-splitting and plastoquinone reduction, while PSI functions as the light-driven plastocyanin-ferredoxin oxidoreductase. In contrast to the highly conserved structure of PSII among all oxygen-evolving photosynthetic organisms, the structures of PSI exhibit remarkable variations, especially for photosynthetic organisms that grow in special environments. In this review, we make a concise overview of the recent investigations of PSI from photosynthetic microorganisms including prokaryotic cyanobacteria and eukaryotic algae from the perspective of structural biology. All known PSI complexes contain a highly conserved heterodimeric core; however, their pigment compositions and peripheral light-harvesting proteins are substantially flexible. A significant part of our stone heritage is made of limestone. Researchers are increasingly concerned about the risk of biodeterioration of these important objects. In this article, we present an up-to-date review of the microbial diversity of biodeteriorated limestone cultural heritage (CHL). This is based on an extensive bibliographic search of the literature investigating biodiversity using culture-dependent (CD) and culture-independent (CI) techniques. In the case of the former, only articles in which microorganisms were identified using molecular tools that generate DNA sequences were selected, with the aim of providing traceable identification based on the sequences submitted to public databases. The literature search resulted in the selection of 50 articles published between 2004 and 2023. The biodiversity data obtained from the CHL were organized into the following groups: fungi (626 records), bacteria and cyanobacteria (786 and 103 records, respectively), algae (51 records), and archaea (27 records). Within each group, the microbial diversity studied was compared according to results obtained using CD and CI techniques. Of all the articles selected, 12 used both approaches, demonstrating the growing effort to discover the total microbiome of biodeteriorated cultural heritage assets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, a global kinetic model of hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is proposed for Aurantiochytrium sp., C. protothecoides, Scenedesmus sp., Chlorella vulgaris, and Tetraselmis sp. algae. Proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates were first decomposed to the aqueous phase and biocrude, followed by further decomposition to the gas phase. MATLAB optimization function was used to optimize the kinetic parameters of different algae. Furthermore, economic analysis was evaluated by using global kinetic modeling to estimate HTL product yields in Aspen Plus. The results showed that the calculated optimum values of activation energies were 31–50, 32–52, and 46–90 kJ/mol for the conversion of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates to biocrude. Also, the global kinetic model had a great predictive ability with a reduced chi-square of 0.717 and R-squared of 0.987. Moreover, the application of the global kinetic model for different biomass such as Chlorella vulgaris, sewage sludge, green waste, food waste, grease residue, and their 50:50 mixtures with Chlorella was evaluated. The yields of Chlorella vulgaris, green waste, food waste, and their mixture with Chlorella could be predicted by the kinetic parameters of Scenedesmus sp., while kinetic parameters of Aurantiochytrium sp. were more appropriate for yield predicting of grease residue. Moreover, HTL techno-economic analysis of Aurantiochytrium sp. showed that the various ranges of the minimum fuel selling price (MFSP) were estimated to be $2.11 to $7.52/GGE by the effect of biomass price. Bacterial membrane vesicles (BMVs) are crucial biological vehicles for facilitating interspecies and interkingdom interactions. However, the extent and mechanisms of BMV involvement in bacterial-algal communication remain elusive. This study provides evidence of BMVs delivering cargos to targeted microalgae. Membrane vesicles (MVs) from Chitinimonas prasina LY03 demonstrated an algicidal profile similar to strain LY03. Further investigation revealed Tambjamine LY2, an effective algicidal compound, selectively packaged into LY03-MVs. Microscopic imaging demonstrated efficient delivery of Tambjamine LY2 to microalgae Heterosigma akashiwo and Thalassiosira pseudonana through membrane fusion. In addition, the study demonstrated the versatile cargo delivery capabilities of BMVs to algae, including the transfer of MV-carried nucleic acids into algal cells and the revival of growth in iron-depleted microalgae by MVs. Collectively, our findings reveal a previously unknown mechanism by which algicidal bacteria store hydrophobic algicidal compounds in MVs to trigger target microalgae death and highlight BMV potency in understanding and engineering bacterial-algae cross-talk. This study investigates the impact of algae loading on the properties of PBAT/algae bio‐composites produced through a melt extrusion process. The integration of algae as a filler demonstrated a reinforcing effect on the PBAT matrix, leading to an increase in modulus with higher algae loading. Concurrently, the tensile strength and maximum tensile strain of PBAT decreased with an increase in algae content. The thermal stability of PBAT was affected by adding algae, resulting in bio‐composites exhibiting an intermediate behavior compared with their neat precursors. The optimal formulation is achieved with 20 wt.% of algae incorporated into the PBAT matrix. Many gaps in our theoretical understanding of the variations in the diversity and structure of intertidal communities exist for the Eastern Pacific. In order to fill some of these gaps, we censused intertidal communities and compared patterns of diversity on multiple spatial scales using several measures in alpha (α) and beta (β) diversities at twenty-one sites in a cold temperate, a warm temperate and a tropical Eastern Pacific ecoregion that were unique in terms of research effort and each with distinct geographic features. Diversity and richness on all spatial scales were compared using area curves, Hill numbers, ordination and cluster analyses, and the Hutcheson's t-test with post hoc PERMANOVA, which revealed significant differences in diversity within and among ecoregions. Functional group and species richness and abundance were found to be highest in the cold and warm temperate ecoregions, and the functional group richness was second highest in the tropical Guayaquil ecoregion. The Bray–Curtis similarity method proved useful for determining patterns of small-scale intertidal zonation, while the Sorensen–Dice method suggested high indices of similarity in the functional group and subclass structures among all ecoregions. Herbaria phycological collections have approximately one million 700 thousand specimens preserved in European herbaria, a significantly lower number when compared to vascular plants, due to factors such as greater sampling difficulty and fewer specialists. Several studies report that coastal systems have undergone dramatic ecological changes in the last 150 years, with macroalgae being a particularly affected group. Thus, macroalgal herbaria are essential sources for the study and conservation of this biodiversity, as well as a pillar that responds to several ecological questions. Despite having a large coastline, Portugal's phycological collections are scarce, poorly developed, and practically inaccessible digitally. In 2021/2022, all the phycological specimens present at LISI were the focus of this exploratory project whose objective was to catalog them, taxonomically review the specimens and place them at the service of the scientific community through the incorporation of digitized vouchers into online databases. Three marine collections were constituted and studied, accounting for a total of 852 vouchers and more than 1800 specimens, being the Portuguese Marine Macroalgae Collection, the oldest digitized phycological collection available in Portugal. The vampire amoebae (Vampyrellida, Rhizaria) inhabit freshwater, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems and consume a wide range of eukaryotic prey. This includes diverse microalgae, fungi, and microscopic animals. One of the most captivating aspects of the vampyrellids is their ability to extract the cell contents of other eukaryotes after local dissolution of the prey cell wall, a feeding strategy that occurs in several vampyrellid families, but is best studied in Vampyrella species that attack zygnematophyte green algae. Here, we report two new vampyrellid strains from temperate moorlands in Germany with a yet‐undescribed feeding strategy: internal protoplast extraction and cell wall regurgitation. This feeding strategy involves the phagocytosis of whole desmid cells (genus Closterium, Zygnematophyceae), internal cleavage of the algal cell wall, extraction of the cell contents, and subsequent exocytosis of bundled empty cell walls. The large primary food vacuole formed during the process has exceptional functions, as it forms internal feeding pseudopodia, packages algal cell contents into smaller secondary vacuoles, and transforms into a "waste vacuole" with cell wall remnants. The new feeding strategy, which – in the widest sense – is reminiscent of the pellet casting of owls, reveals a stunningly sophisticated behavior of single protist cells. Based on morphological, phylogenetic, and autecological data, both vampyrellid strains are nearly identical and here assigned to a new and quite unique vampyrellid taxon, Strigomyxa ruptor gen. et sp. nov. Light availability and habitat complexity are two key drivers of community assembly. Urbanisation has been shown to affect both, with important consequences to ecological communities. On the intertidal, for instance, studies have shown that light intensity is greater on natural rocky shores than on less complex artificial habitats (seawalls), though different habitats can also experience similar light intensities, for example when shaded by urban structures. Understanding therefore how these factors individually, and combined, affect communities is important to understand the mechanisms driving changes in community structure, and consequently provide solutions to tackle the increasing homogenisation of habitats and lightscapes in urbanised spaces through smart infrastructure designs. Here, we assessed how different light levels affect the recruitment of communities in rock pools and on emergent rock on an intertidal rocky shore. We cleared 30 patches of emergent rock and 30 rock pools and manipulated light using shades with different light transmissions (full light, procedural control, 75%, 35%, and 15% light transmission, full shade) and assessed mobile and sessile communities monthly for 6 months. Effects of reducing light levels were generally stronger on rock than in pools. Fully shaded plots supported double the amount of mobile organisms than plots in full sunlight, in both habitats. Algal cover was higher in pools compared to rock, and at intermediate light levels, but effects varied with site. This study highlights the importance of variable light conditions and different habitats for rocky shore communities, which should be considered in future coastal developments to retain natural biodiversity. Diatoms are key components of freshwater ecosystems and are regularly used for paleolimnological reconstructions, in which defining species optima and tolerances is fundamental for interpreting assemblage shifts in a sediment record. Here, we examined responses of diatoms across three major environmental gradients—dissolved inorganic carbon (range: 0.1–230.5 mg · L−1), total phosphorus (range: 3–326 μg · L−1), and maximum lake depth (range: 0.9–55.0 m)—taken from 158 lakes from across Canada. The lakes were sampled as part of the LakePulse Network, which conducted a standardized sampling of lakes spanning 12 Canadian ecozones. Hierarchical logistic regression was used to model the species responses of 37 common taxa, and species optima and tolerances were calculated with weighted average modeling. The most common response detected was the symmetrical unimodal model, suggesting we likely captured the full environmental ranges for many species, although skewed unimodal responses were also common. Indicator species analyses identified taxa with high predictive values and fidelities to particular ecozones, with high‐nutrient‐adapted taxa such as Stephanodiscus spp. and Cyclotella meneghiniana characteristic of the agriculturally productive Prairie region. The Prairies stood out in the dataset as the region with the most unique flora from the local contribution to beta diversity analysis. Overall, the autecological data provided by our study will allow for improved interpretations of paleolimnological records and other biomonitoring efforts, addressing management concerns and contributing to a better understanding of our changing environment. Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) have emerged as promising metal nanoparticles in biomedical applications. In particular, green-synthesized PdNPs have gained significant attention due to their advantages of being simple, cost-effective, and low-toxic. This review summarizes the green synthesis of medicinal-oriented PdNPs using natural sources such as plants, mushrooms, algae, fungi, and biological molecules. Furthermore, this review discusses the potential biomedical applications of these green-synthesized PdNPs such as photothermal therapy, antibacterial/antitumor therapies, drug delivery, and imaging. It also identifies the current challenges and prospects for their use in these applications. During photosynthesis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are formed, including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and singlet oxygen (1O2), which have putative roles in signalling, but their involvement in photosynthetic acclimation is unclear. Due to extreme reactivity and a short lifetime, 1O2 signalling occurs via its reaction products, such as oxidised poly-unsaturated fatty acids in thylakoid membranes. The resulting lipid peroxides decay to various aldehydes and reactive electrophile species (RES). Here, we investigated the role of ROS in the signal transduction of high light (HL), focusing on GreenCut2 genes unique to photosynthetic organisms. Using RNA seq. data, the transcriptional responses of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii to 2 h HL were compared with responses under low light to exogenous RES (acrolein; 4-hydroxynonenal), β-cyclocitral, a β-carotene oxidation product, as well as Rose Bengal, a 1O2-producing photosensitiser, and H2O2. HL induced significant (p < 0.05) up- and down-regulation of 108 and 23 GreenCut2 genes, respectively. Of all HL up-regulated genes, over half were also up-regulated by RES, including RBCS1 (ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase small subunit), NPQ-related PSBS1 and LHCSR1. Furthermore, 96% of the genes down-regulated by HL were also down-regulated by 1O2 or RES, including CAO1 (chlorophyllide-a oxygnease), MDH2 (NADP-malate dehydrogenase) and PGM4 (phosphoglycerate mutase) for glycolysis. In comparison, only 0–4% of HL-affected GreenCut2 genes were similarly affected by H2O2 or β-cyclocitral. Overall, 1O2 plays a significant role in signalling during the initial acclimation of C. reinhardtii to HL by up-regulating photo-protection and carbon assimilation and down-regulating specific primary metabolic pathways. Innovative approaches in nanotechnology provide a potentially promising alternative to untreatable cases of mastitis caused by genus Prototheca spp. algae infections. Drying of the teats of the affected animals or culling are typically the outcomes of mastitis in dairy cattle caused by these pathogens. A major issue in both veterinary medicine and animal breeding is the Prototheca species' widespread resistance to the current methods of managing infections and the available drugs, including antibiotics. Commercial antifungal preparations are also ineffective. Nanotechnology, an emerging discipline, has the potential to create an effective alternative treatment for protothecal mastitis. The aim of the paper is to combine the literature data on the use of nanotechnology in the control of mastitis, taking into account data on combating mastitis caused by Prototheca spp. infections. The databases employed were PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus, focusing on literature from the last 20 years to ensure relevance and currency. Studies conducted in vitro have demonstrated that nanomaterials have significant biocidal activity against mastitis infections of different etiologies. Analyzed research papers show that (NPs), such as AgNPs, CuNPs, AuNPs, etc., may not negatively impact various cell lines and may be effective agents in reducing the pathogens' viability. Epilithic green algae play crucial roles in aquatic ecosystems. While traditional morphological approaches have provided valuable insights into these algae, their limitations in resolving cryptic species and fully capturing the extent of diversity have impeded a comprehensive understanding. The diversity and phylogenetic relationships of these algae largely remain unexplored. In the present study, single molecular real-time (SMRT) sequencing of the full-length 18S rDNA was employed to investigate the molecular diversity and phylogenetic relationships of epilithic green algae in biodiversity conservation hotspots. A total of 79 709 algal reads were generated, yielding 169 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) from 21 epilithic riverine green algal assemblages classified in the Ulvophyceae, Chlorophyceae and Trebouxiophyceae. The 10 families in which the greatest number of unique ASVs (diversity) were observed were the Ulvellaceae, Protosiphonaceae, Chlorococcaceae, Watanabeaceae, Chlorellaceae, Neochloridaceae, Chaetophoraceae, Hazeniaceae, Tupiellaceae and Scenedesmaceae. Unique clades formed by a substantial number of sequences of green algae were detected within the Ulvales/Ulotrichales (Ulvophyceae) and the Chlorococcaceae/Protosiphonaceae (Chlorophyceae). This study has unveiled hidden diversity within epilithic green algae, expanding our knowledge of their evolutionary relationships and providing fundamental data for taxonomic investigations within this group, as well as contributing to the assessment of algal diversity in biodiversity conservation hotspots. This study suggests that these epilithic green algal assemblages may be significantly more diverse than previously recognized, but we acknowledge the limited ecological and temporal scope of our sampling effort and the resulting effects on which taxa are identified, warranting further research. Kinesins are eukaryotic microtubule motor proteins subdivided into conserved families with distinct functional roles. While many kinesin families are widespread in eukaryotes, each organismal lineage maintains a unique kinesin repertoire composed of many families with distinct numbers of genes. Previous genomic surveys indicated that land plant kinesin repertoires differ markedly from other eukaryotes. To determine when repertoires diverged during plant evolution, we performed robust phylogenomic analyses of kinesins in 24 representative plants, two algae, two animals, and one yeast. These analyses show that kinesin repertoires expand and contract coincident with major shifts in the biology of algae and land plants. One kinesin family and five subfamilies, each defined by unique domain architectures, emerged in the green algae. Four of those kinesin groups expanded in ancestors of modern land plants, while six other kinesin groups were lost in the ancestors of pollen-bearing plants. Expansions of different kinesin families and subfamilies occurred in moss and angiosperm lineages. Other kinesin families remained stable and did not expand throughout plant evolution. Collectively these data support a radiation of kinesin domain architectures in algae followed by differential positive and negative selection on kinesins families and subfamilies in different lineages of land plants. Irrigated and rain-fed rice fields are unique agroecosystems and anthropogenic wetlands whose main feature is seasonal flooding. Flooded soils are characterized by spatiotemporal shifts and oscillation of the oxygen status and redox potential, sustaining varieties of microbial metabolisms, where bacteria and methanogenic archaea play principal roles and thus have been the major research targets. In this review, we focus on the diversity and ecology of protists—often overlooked biological entities—in wetland rice field soils. Protists with different ecological functions, i.e., phagotrophs, phototrophs, saprotrophs, and parasites, inhabit a rice field soil with a community- and individual-level adaptation to the wide range of oxygen tensions and redox potential. Other agricultural managements like fertilization and char application also influence the protist community. They link to the material cycling in rice soil and affect the activities and community composition of the microorganisms involved in the biogeochemical cycles. Rice roots are the hot spot for protists, which control the rhizospheric bacterial community and could increase the plant productivity through enhancing nutrient release and altering bacterial activities. This review highlights the essential roles of protists in a wetland rice field soil and needs for further research to fill the gaps in knowledge regarding the diversity and functions of the protists in this unique agroecosystem. One of the main priorities of current food systems is to develop new and healthy foods to overcome food shortages considering consumer's expectations. Algae are receiving increasing attention as nutritious and sustainable food, though studies are limited mainly to Arthrospira and Chlorella species and cross-national research is scant. This study aims to investigate European consumers' liking and perception of crackers added with powders from Arthrospira platensis (green Spirulina), isolated proteins from Arthrospira platensis (blue Spirulina), Palmaria palmata, Saccharina latissima, Lithothamnium calcareum and a control cracker. Belgian, German, Italian, and Swedish participants (n = 413, 18–69 years, 59.8% females) evaluated cracker liking and perceived sensory attributes using the check-all-that-apply (CATA) task. Food neophobia, familiarity towards, and consumption of algae were also collected. Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) analyses showed that across all countries, Lithothamnium calcareum, blue Spirulina and the control samples were perceived as similar and were liked more than the other crackers. "Sweet", "toasted bread", and "bland" attributes were significant contributors to liking, while "off-flavor", "fishy flavor", "umami" and "speckled" contributed negatively. PLSR performed by country provided similar results except for Italians who liked the green Spirulina sample equally as the samples added with Lithothamnium calcareum, blue Spirulina, and the control. These cross-national differences can be ascribed to Italians' lower food neophobia level. The present results suggest that Lithothamnium calcareum is the most promising algal species to be exploited in food formulations and that the use of isolated proteins from Spirulina (blue Spirulina) significantly reduces off-flavors, consequently improving consumers' acceptance. Superior competitors are known to regulate community structure by influencing competitive outcomes between species of inferior competitors with overlapping ecological niches. However, more research is needed to obtain a detailed understanding of the ecological process.We examined how the superior competitor Daphnia magna influenced competition–exclusion between two coexisting Brachionus rotifer species.Brachionus angularis was no longer the superior competitor when D. magna was introduced into the cultured Brachionus calyciflorus + B. angularis system. Small‐sized D. magna (1.6–1.9 mm in body length) mediated population dynamics and facilitated the persistence of the two Brachionus species, while large‐sized D. magna (2.0–2.3 mm in body length) excluded only B. angularis at the high food level (3 × 106 cells/ml Chlorella) or both rotifer species at the low food level (1 × 106 cells/ml Chlorella).These findings indicate that the different body sizes of a superior competitor species can reverse competitive results between inferior competitor species in relation to food abundance.Our results highlight the dynamic nature of populations in multispecies communities and the need to understand species interactions in relation to their environment. Ecological traits are functional characteristics measurable at the species level and provide valuable insights into how organisms respond to environmental constraints. Here, we investigated how diatom trait‐groups and individual species respond to environmental variables, and identified indicator species that are particularly sensitive to environmental variation.Diatoms were sampled at 129 sites in the subarctic streams of Norwegian islands and mainland, and were categorised into three trait groups: high‐profile species that live in an erect position, low‐profile species living in low position along the surface, and motile diatoms. Data were analysed using a recently developed method known as Hierarchical Modelling of Species Communities, which is a flexible framework for joint species distribution modelling.We found that diatom trait‐groups responded relatively weakly to measured environmental variables but showed positive or negative relationships with major ion levels of the water (e.g., conductivity, calcium [Ca2+], sodium [Na+] or chlorine [Cl−]). Variance partitioning showed a similar, important contribution of the chemical variables for all of the trait groups, while the contributions of physical variables and especially random (spatial) factors were notably lower for all trait groups.Our findings also highlighted considerable among‐species variation in their relation to environmental variables within the trait groups. Notably, we identified a high number of indicator species within each trait group that were explained by specific environmental factors, mostly chemical variables (conductivity, pH, total nitrogen and phosphorus, Ca2+, Na+, Cl−).Our study suggests that certain diatom species can be considered as useful environmental indicators but the variability in species preferences within the trait group may in some circumstances hamper the use of ecological traits in environmental assessments. Summary: In recent years, there has been an increasing emphasis on natural and healthy nutrition, leading to increased interest in fermented foods and their associated health benefits. In line with this trend, fermentation is employed to enhance the exceptional properties of algae, including their nutritional value and digestibility, rendering them suitable for consumption as food. Fermentation of algae involves the conversion of carbohydrates into alcohol or organic acids by microorganisms, including bacteria or yeast. First of all, the fermentation process results in enhanced antioxidant activity, antimicrobial effects, anti‐inflammatory properties, immunomodulatory effects, anti‐glycation activity, antihypertensive effects and neuroprotective activity by increasing the bioavailability of bioactive compounds in algae. In addition, this method encourages the incorporation of algae into food products. In this process, both the flavour and texture are enhanced, while simultaneously preserving and enriching the beneficial nutrients and compounds present in algae. Despite the availability of various fermented algae products in the market, their widespread adoption has yet to be realised. The incorporation of fermented algae into food products not only enhances their nutritional content but also fosters the emergence of a new segment within the fermented food market. Summary: Algae and field crops can innovate and improve pasta; however, incorporation of high‐fibre materials can weaken the protein‐starch matrix. This study's aim was to verify how ratios of xanthan gum (XG) and linseed flour (LF) would influence physical, sensory attributes and bioactivity of pasta supplemented with algae. Fucus vesiculosus and Chlorella vulgaris were incorporated into durum wheat along with LF or XG. Samples were evaluated for optimal cooking time (OCT), cooking loss, colour variation, texture profile analysis (TPA), sensory evaluation, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. XG increased cooking time and cooking loss. The phenolic content and antioxidant activity were highest in samples with LF. TPA showed texture is influenced by incorporation of algae. Sensory analysis showed that LF‐enriched pasta had better acceptance. In 2022, there were around 20 million new cases and over 9.7 million cancer‐related deaths worldwide. An increasing number of metabolites with anticancer activity in algae had been isolated and identified, which were promising candidates for cancer therapy. Red algae are well‐known for the production of brominated metabolites, including terpenoids and phenols, which have the capacity to induce cell toxicity. Some non‐toxic biological macromolecules, including polysaccharides, are distinct secondary metabolites found in many algae, particularly green algae. They possess anticancer activities by inhibiting tumor angiogenesis, stimulating the immune response, and inducing apoptosis. However, the structure–activity relationship between these components and antitumor activity, as well as certain taxa within the algae, remains relatively unstudied. This work is based on the reports published from 2003 to 2024 in PubMed and ISI Web of Science databases. A comprehensive review of the characterized algal anticancer active compounds, together with their structure and mechanism of action was performed. Also, their structure–activity relationship was preliminarily summarized to better assess their potential properties as a natural, safe bioactive product to be used as an alternative for the treatment of cancers, leading to new opportunities for drug discovery. Microfossils and problematics from the Upper Ediacaran deposits of the Zuun-Arts Formation of the Zavkhan Terrane of Western Mongolia are discussed. For the first time, various organic remains preserved in mineralized and organic-clay taphocenoses have been described from these deposits. Numerous tubular microfossils are interpreted as remains of the sheaths of the giant sulfide-oxidizing Thioploca bacteria Candidatus Marithioploca araucae. The information about the algae of Lake Azas, a part of the water area of which belongs to the Azas State Nature Reserve, is reported for the first time. One hundred seventy one species and intraspecific taxa were identified referred to 72 genera, 50 families, and 8 divisions. The basis of the algal flora was found to consist of diatoms and blue-green algae. Fourteen dominants were identified, 9 of which belong to the Bacillariophyta microalgae. Ecological and geographical studies of the algae in the reserved part of the lake were carried out. The algal flora of the water body was found to be represented by benthic species with a prevalence of indifferent forms in relation to halobility and active reaction of the environment. One hundred twenty three species, indicators of water saprobity, were identified in all the biotopes studied. The predominance of betamezosaprobionts and oligosaprobionts was detected. This study investigated microplastic (MP) contamination in conventional sea salt farming systems. Various crude sea salt samples (n = 22) that were traditionally produced were collected from salt farms and local vendors. Salt water (n = 15), macroalgae (n = 6), and clay of pond floors (n = 6) were collected from ponds subjected to different production (stabilization, evaporation, and concentration and crystallization concentration) processes. All samples were analyzed for MP abundance and characteristics. The potential sources of MP contamination in the salt were also investigated. The mean abundance of MPs in the salt water and clay of pond floor increased progressively throughout the production process and reached its highest level in the concentration and crystallization ponds (7400 MP particles/m3 in salt water and 19,336 MP particles/m2 in the clay of the pond floor). A maximum of 26,500 MP particles/kg of macroalgal material indicated the potential sink of MPs on the surface of the algae. Approximately 34–2377 MP particles/kg salt were found in the crude sea salt samples. However, the mean abundance (378 MP particles/kg of salt) indicated nonsignificant impacts of different harvesting processes on MP contamination. Most MP size distributions, shapes and polymer types in the salts were similar to those found in the salt water, macroalgae and clay of the pond floor. Approximately 99% of the MPs were fragments that were suspected to be decomposed from larger plastic debris and plastic machinery and tools used at the salt farm. Featured Application: This work aims to find a well-tolerated and effective therapeutic regimen option as an anti-aging treatment in subjects with sensitive skin for which skincare routines can be challenging when trying to achieve high tolerance and efficacy. Sensitive skin has a great impact on the quality of life of subjects. In this research, we evaluated the efficacy and tolerance of a cosmetic treatment for facial skincare, consisting of a cleanser, serum and cream. A clinical-instrumental study was carried out on 30 healthy female participants with sensitive and reactive skin and slight-to-moderate wrinkles using a new cosmetic regimen based on a new technology. Skin moisturization, skin barrier function, erythema, elasticity and firmness, and wrinkle depth (skin profilometry) were evaluated at basal time (T0), and after 14, 28 and 42 days of treatment (T14, T28 and T42). All the evaluated variables showed significant improvement at T42 when compared to T0. Moisturization, erythema, firmness, and elasticity had significant improvement at T14 and the other attributes after T28 (transepidermal water loss, wrinkle depth). A high level of tolerance and satisfaction reported by subjects were achieved. This treatment regimen combining the cleanser, the daily cream, and the nightly serum, showed a statistically significant improvement in all of the parameters evaluated, demonstrating its effectiveness as an anti-aging regimen while improving the sensitive skin condition. Septins are a family of membrane-associated cytoskeletal guanine-nucleotide binding proteins that play crucial roles in various cellular processes, such as cell division, phagocytosis, and organelle fission. Despite their importance, the evolutionary origins and ancestral function of septins remain unclear. In opisthokonts, septins form five distinct groups of orthologs, with subunits from multiple groups assembling into heteropolymers, thus supporting their diverse molecular functions. Recent studies have revealed that septins are also conserved in algae and protists, indicating an ancient origin from the last eukaryotic common ancestor. However, the phylogenetic relationships among septins across eukaryotes remained unclear. Here, we expanded the list of nonopisthokont septins, including previously unrecognized septins from glaucophyte algae. Constructing a rooted phylogenetic tree of 254 total septins, we observed a bifurcation between the major non-opisthokont and opisthokont septin clades. Within the non-opisthokont septins, we identified three major subclades: Group 6 representing chlorophyte green algae (6A mostly for species with single septins, 6B for species with multiple septins), Group 7 representing algae in chlorophytes, heterokonts, haptophytes, chrysophytes, and rhodophytes, and Group 8 representing ciliates. Glaucophyte and some ciliate septins formed orphan lineages in-between all other septins and the outgroup. Combining ancestral-sequence reconstruction and AlphaFold predictions, we tracked the structural evolution of septins across eukaryotes. In the GTPase domain, we identified a conserved GAP-like arginine finger within the G-interface of at least one septin in most algal and ciliate species. This residue is required for homodimerization of the single Chlamydomonas septin, and its loss coincided with septin duplication events in various lineages. The loss of the arginine finger is often accompanied by the emergence of the a0 helix, a known NC-interface interaction motif, potentially signifying the diversification of septinseptin interaction mechanisms from homo-dimerization to heterooligomerization. Lastly, we found amphipathic helices in all septin groups, suggesting that membrane binding is an ancestral trait. Coiled-coil domains were also broadly distributed, while transmembrane domains were found in some septins in Group 6A and 7. In summary, this study advances our understanding of septin distribution and phylogenetic groupings, shedding light on their ancestral features, potential function, and early evolution. In order to transform hazardous substances into their less harmful or nontoxic constituent elements, microorganisms are used in the remediation process known as "bioremediation." Any biological process that uses microorganisms such as fungi, algae, yeast, bacteria, or green plants, or the enzymes produced by the microorganisms, can restore the natural environment altered by heavy metal pollutants. Among the heavy metals, hexavalent chromium (Cr (VI)) is the most toxic pollutant in the environment. Several human activities are responsible for its release into the environment. The chemical, physical, and biological characteristics have a positive influence on the dissolution within the aqueous medium. Exposure to Cr (VI) may have an influence on both human health and the flora and fauna of the environment. Because of its mutagenic and carcinogenic properties, chromium (VI) is a much more hazardous substance than other chromium species, such as Cr (V) and Cr (III). Dermatitis, asthma, pneumonitis, and bronchiogenic cancer are all possible outcomes of chronic Cr (VI) exposure. The effective management of Cr (VI) to address concerns about public health is absolutely essential from an environmental point of view. Algae are a diverse group of unicellular autotropic microorganisms. It is a free-floating and filament-shaped organism, in which the blade is the main site for photosynthesis. Hence, called a photosynthetic organism. Different types of algae are found in different types of climatic conditions. Algae are found in almost all adverse climates. Due to its vast chemical composition and content of bioactive substances attention of different industries like food, cosmetic pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, etc. are caught by it. Polar regions harbor a diversity of cold-adapted (cryophilic) algae, which can be categorized into psychrophilic (obligate cryophilic) and cryotrophic (nonobligate cryophilic) snow algae. Both can accumulate significant biomasses on glacier and snow habitats and play major roles in global climate dynamics. Despite their significance, genomic studies on these organisms remain scarce, hindering our understanding of their evolutionary history and adaptive mechanisms in the face of climate change. Here, we present the draft genome assembly and annotation of the psychrophilic snow algal strain CCCryo 101-99 (cf. Sphaerocystis sp.). The draft haploid genome assembly is 122.5 Mb in length and is represented by 664 contigs with an N50 of 0.86 Mb, a Benchmarking Universal Single-Copy Orthologs (BUSCO) completeness of 92.9% (n = 1,519), a maximum contig length of 5.3 Mb, and a guanine-cystosine (GC) content of 53.1%. In total, 28.98% of the genome (35.5 Mb) contains repetitive elements. We identified 417 noncoding RNAs and annotated the chloroplast genome. The predicted proteome comprises 14,805 genes with a BUSCO completeness of 97.8%. Our preliminary analyses reveal a genome with a higher repeat content compared with mesophilic chlorophyte relatives, alongside enrichment in gene families associated with photosynthesis and flagella functions. Our current data will facilitate future comparative studies, improving our understanding of the likely response of polar algae to a warming climate as well as their evolutionary trajectories in permanently cold environments.
