Background Rainbow blood draws for add-on testing in the emergency department (ED) are a common practice at our institution. We sought to determine the prevalence of this practice among reference laboratory clients and characterize the impact of pandemic-driven supply shortages. Methods This cross-sectional study surveyed 354 client laboratories to understand specimen collection practices in specific clinical environments and how these practices may have been affected by supply chain shortages. Data analysis by descriptive statistics was performed in Qualtrics. Results A total of 138 laboratories took the survey (39% response rate) with 57% indicating that their ED performed rainbow draws. Of these, 16% have a formal policy regarding rainbow draws, and 76% of respondents indicated that their institution was required to modify practices due to pandemic-driven supply shortages. A total of 19% indicated they routinely collect multiple urine aliquots for add-on testing. Conclusion Rainbow draws and collection of urine aliquots in the ED for add-on testing are relatively common practices, with few institutions maintaining formal policies regarding the practice. Pandemic-driven supply chain shortages affected a majority of respondent laboratories and local cost-benefit analysis regarding extra specimen collection is recommended to limit waste of laboratory resources. Background and Objectives: Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are used for minimising the risk of thromboembolic events. In clinical practice, there is no need to measure DOAC concentration in the routine. Nevertheless, there are cases where such measurements are necessary, as the European Society of Cardiology's guideline recommends. However, determining DOAC levels is not available for everyone due to chromogenic assay availability limitations from sample storage problems, as tests are performed only in a few healthcare settings. This study aimed to assess whether more applicable storage conditions could be used for transportation to provide chromogenic assays for outpatient healthcare and other hospitals' practices. Materials and Methods: Chromogenic assays measuring anti-FXa (for rivaroxaban and edoxaban) and anti-FIIa (for dabigatran) were used. Concentrations were determined immediately after blood collection as baseline value: (1) after the storage of citrated whole blood in refrigerator (+2–8 °C); (2) of citrated plasma in refrigerator (+2–8 °C); and (3) of citrated frozen plasma (−20 °C) on the third and seventh days of storage. Acceptable change limits were considered stable if the deviation did not exceed ±20% of the baseline value. Results: The median (Cl 95%) baseline value of rivaroxaban was 168 (147–236) ng/mL; of dabigatran 139 (99–178) ng/mL; and of edoxaban—174 (135–259) ng/mL. The median deviation from a baseline value stored as citrate whole blood samples (+2–8 °C) was 5.4% and 3.4%; as citrated plasma (+2–8 °C) was 0.4% and −0.6%; and as citrated frozen plasma (−20 °C) was −0.2% and 0.2% on the third and seventh days of storage, respectively. Conclusions: Our data suggest that whole blood samples stored in a refrigerator, as well as citrated plasma samples stored in both the refrigerator and freezer, preserve DOAC concentration stable at +2–8 °C or −20 °C for up to 7 days, and are suitable for transportation, except for low-concentration samples. BackgroundAutomated protocols for measuring and dispensing solutions containing radioisotopes are essential not only for providing a safe environment for radiation workers but also to ensure accuracy of dispensed radioactivity and an efficient workflow. For this purpose, we have designed ARAS, an automated radioactivity aliquoting system for dispensing solutions containing positron-emitting radioisotopes with particular focus on fluorine-18 ((18)F).MethodsThe key to the system is the combination of a radiation detector measuring radioactivity concentration, in line with a peristaltic pump dispensing known volumes.ResultsThe combined system demonstrates volume variation to be within 5 % for dispensing volumes of 20 μL or greater. When considering volumes of 20 μL or greater, the delivered radioactivity is in agreement with the requested amount as measured independently with a dose calibrator to within 2 % on average.ConclusionsThe integration of the detector and pump in an in-line system leads to a flexible and compact approach that can accurately dispense solutions containing radioactivity concentrations ranging from the high values typical of [(18)F]fluoride directly produced from a cyclotron (~0.1-1 mCi μL(-1)) to the low values typical of batches of [(18)F]fluoride-labeled radiotracers intended for preclinical mouse scans (~1-10 μCi μL(-1)).

• Immature platelet content of aliquots influences platelet count increment. • Irradiation of platelets limit benefit of high immature platelet content. • Younger patients received incrementally higher transfusion volumes. Immature platelets, young and large platelets recently released from the bone marrow, have gained interest over the last decade as a clinically informative variable during thrombocytopenic presentations. These immature platelets are found in all donated platelet units, however, the role, if any, that these younger platelets play post transfusion is not known. It has also been reported that the immune response can affect responses to platelet transfusions. Thus, we looked at PLT increments in a cohort of neonates receiving platelet transfusions in our neonatal intensive care unit. During a twelve-month period, platelet transfusions received by neonates born and not discharged from our institution at time of transfusion were retrospectively analyzed. In the study period a total of 33 patients received either a single or multiple transfusions during their hospitalization, for a total of 100 transfusion events. The cohort was mostly premature neonates with a mean gestational age of 29.6 weeks. The units transfused appeared to have a broad range of absolute immature platelet counts (A-IPC) but overall, it was similar between those receiving single or multiple transfusions. Considering that platelet count was similar among aliquots transfused, it appeared that count increments were influenced by higher A-IPC content of the aliquot especially among 2nd trimester and 3rd trimester premature neonates. Patients with higher baseline platelet count (PLT) tended to receive a single transfusion aliquot while those receiving multiple transfusions had lower baseline PLT (p = 0.0022). Looking at aliquot dose, regardless if receiving a single or multiple transfusions, younger patients received incrementally higher dose (ml/kg) with each transfusion. A-IPC in platelet aliquots transfused to neonates may influence post-transfusion PLT. Full effect of A-IPC in platelet aliquots may not be seen since irradiation of units may hamper immature platelets viability and function. Introduction: Blood is a precious commodity, with storage limited to 42 days under refrigeration. Degradative changes in red blood cells (RBCs) begin as early as 11-21 days after collection, and compromise their function. Materials that extend the life of RBCs will improve blood utilization in the field, as well as in hospital settings. Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeONPs) are widely used in the materials industry to counteract oxidative stress and improve oxygen storage. We have previously shown that CeONPs extended the lifespan of cells in culture and counteract oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo. Here, we test the hypothesis that CeONPs extend the lifespan of RBCs in whole stored blood.Materials and Methods: Rat whole blood was collected with sodium citrate and stored at 4°C. Groups consisted of control (no CeONPs), and 10 and 100 nM CeONPs (average particle size 10 nm) added. Aliquots of stored blood were removed weekly and analyzed for different blood parameters.Results: Results demonstrate that CeONPs improve storage and functional lifespan of RBCs in stored whole blood.Conclusions: This work suggests that CeONPs may be a promising additive for extending storage and function of blood and blood products. Background Handheld 3-dimensional surface imaging (3DSI) devices of various precision are becoming more versatile in their applications and more widely accepted by clinicians for documentation. Objectives The authors sought to compare the precision of facial volumetric change measurements of 3 3DSI devices in the cadaveric model: Eva (Artec 3D Inc. Luxembourg), Sense (3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC), and iSense (3D Systems, Rock Hill, SC). Methods A total of 336 scanning and analysis procedures were carried out in 4 cephalic specimens (mean age, 77.25 ± 24.3 years; mean BMI, 21.76 ± 6.6 kg/m2). Two superficial and 2 supraperiosteal regions of interest were injected with 0.5-cc aliquots and subsequently scanned using the 3 different scanners. Correlation coefficients between the injected and measured volume were computed. Results The correlation coefficient for the Eva scanner was for subcutaneous regions of interest rp = 0.935 and for the supraperiosteal regions of interest rp = 0.966, compared with rp = 0.760 and rp = 0.364 (superficial vs supraperiosteal) for the Sense and rp = 0.694 and rp = 0.382 (superficial vs supraperiosteal) for the iSense scanner. Conclusions 3DSI devices are capable of measuring surface volume changes of the face at a level of 0.5-cc surface volume change and can thus be regarded as useful tools in the preinterventional, intrainterventional, and postinterventional phases of a treatment. One of the 3 evaluated scanners provided very high correlation coefficients between the injected and the measured volume (Eva), whereas the other evaluated 3DSI devices provided moderate (Sense) and low (iSense) coefficients. Objectives: Antimicrobial susceptibility data for Chlamydia trachomatis are lacking. Methodologies for susceptibility testing in C. trachomatis are not well-defined, standardized or performed routinely owing to its intracellular growth requirements. We sought to develop an assay for the in vitro susceptibility testing of C. trachomatis isolates from two patient cohorts with different clinical outcomes.Methods: Twenty-four clinical isolates (11 from persistently infected and 13 from successfully treated patients) were overlaid with media containing two-fold serial dilutions of azithromycin or doxycycline. After incubation, aliquots were removed from the stock inoculum (SI) and each antimicrobial concentration for total RNA extraction, complementary DNA generation and real-time PCR. The MIC was defined as the lowest antimicrobial concentration where a 95% reduction in transcription was evident in comparison with the SI for each isolate.Results: MICs of azithromycin were comparable for isolates from the two patient groups (82% ≤ 0.25 mg/L for persistently infected and 100% ≤ 0.25 mg/L for successfully treated patients). Doxycycline MICs were at least two-fold lower for isolates from the successfully treated patients (53.9% ≤ 0.064 mg/L) than for the persistently infected patients (100% ≥ 0.125 mg/L) (P = 0.006, Fisher's exact test). Overall, 96% of isolates gave reproducible MICs when re-tested.Conclusions: A reproducible assay was developed for antimicrobial susceptibility testing of C. trachomatis. MICs of azithromycin were generally comparable for the two different patient groups. MICs of doxycycline were significantly higher in the persistently infected patients. Background: Identification of specimens that contain ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is frequently necessary when investigating potentially mislabeled or improperly collected specimens. Objective: To evaluate the performance of rapid EDTA detection test strips in clinical specimens. Methods: We applied specimens to test strips designed to detect EDTA (QUANTOFIX EDTA) using a pipet (drop mode). Reactions were scored visually on a scale from red (no EDTA) to orange (low/indeterminate EDTA) to yellow (contains EDTA). Results: Test strips reliably identified specimens from EDTA-containing tube types. Although test strips did not detect strong reactivity in other specimens, tubes containing NaFl/K-oxalate produced an orange (low/indeterminate EDTA) reaction. Bismuth and citrate levels were higher in specimens after we dipped test strips into solution (dip mode). Conclusions: Test strips detected the presence of EDTA in concentrations found in EDTA-containing primary tubes. Test strips were less effective in evaluating low-level EDTA concentrations expected with intravenous line contamination or backflow. Indeterminate reactions required further investigation. Dip mode can produce analytical problems for assays that measure (or are interfered by) the contents of test strips. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ALIQUOT (Anastrozole vs. Letrozole, an Investigation of Quality Of Life and Tolerability) was a prospective, open-label, randomized pharmacodynamic study designed to assess the effects of aromatase inhibitors (AIs) on bone turnover in healthy postmenopausal women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer. Ninety-four patients were randomized to receive either 12 weeks of letrozole (2.5 mg; n = 42) followed by 12 weeks of anastrozole (1 mg), or 12 weeks of anastrozole (1 mg; n = 42) followed by 12 weeks of letrozole (2.5 mg). After completion of the study period, patients in the immediate adjuvant group were either switched to tamoxifen ( n = 38) or continued on anastrozole or letrozole. In the beginning of the study, 42 patients had taken tamoxifen within 3 months. Patients taking drugs likely to affect bone metabolism, including bisphosphonates, were excluded. Eighty-four patients had complete sample measurements and were included in the analysis. Prior tamoxifen therapy resulted in a significantly lower mean baseline procollagen type 1 N-terminal propeptide (PINP) compared with patients with no prior tamoxifen. There were no significant differences in bone markers between AIs at any time. By 6 months, significant increases were seen in PINP, C-terminal telopeptides (CTX), bone specific alkaline phosphatise (ALP), and urinary N-terminal telopeptides (NTX). Patients with prior tamoxifen had significantly greater increases than patients with no prior tamoxifen. Patients treated with 3 months of tamoxifen following 6 months of an AI showed a significant decrease in markers of bone resorption, serum CTX and urinary NTX. In conclusion, AI-induced bone turnover increases over time. Anastrozole and letrozole produce similar effects on bone metabolism and turnover. Stopping tamoxifen therapy and starting AIs results in a significantly greater increase in bone turnover compared with commencing AIs in tamoxifen-naïve patients. Background The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) updated fluoroquinolone breakpoints in 2019 in response to evolving resistance and new outcome data. The performance of updated antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) algorithms for ciprofloxacin with the 2019 breakpoints for Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was evaluated using the Accelerate Pheno™ system with contrived positive blood culture samples compared with broth microdilution (BMD). Methods A total of 294 clinical isolates (100 P. aeruginosa , 82 Klebsiella spp. 56 E. coli , 24 Citrobacter spp. 14 Enterobacter spp. 15 Proteus spp. and 3 S. marcescens) were tested with ciprofloxacin. Aliquots of BD BACTEC™ Standard Aerobic media containing healthy donor blood were seeded with 10–100 bacterial cells and incubated until positivity. Aliquots of the positive blood cultures were run using the Accelerate PhenoTest™ BC kit on the Accelerate Pheno™ system according to the manufacturer instructions for use. Results were obtained using an updated ciprofloxacin algorithm and compared with CLSI standard reference BMD. Only samples with valid results with both the Accelerate Pheno™ system and reference BMD were included in analysis. Essential agreement (EA), categorical agreement (CA), very major error (VME), major error (ME) and minor error (mE) rates were calculated using 2019 CLSI breakpoints. Results EA and CA for all antimicrobial/organism combinations were >94%. There were 2 MEs (1 K. pneumoniae , 1 C. freundii) and no VMEs. Conclusion Results with the new research use only (RUO) algorithms are very good and meet FDA acceptance criteria for AST performance. Background To prevent the spread of drug-resistant bacteria, a rapid and accurate antimicrobial susceptibility test (AST) is necessary. Recently, morphokinetic microscopy approaches have been reported as a rapid AST method. However, these still require several hours to obtain a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) luminescence has also been reported as a rapid AST method that can detect bacterial growth more rapidly than morphokinetic approaches, since ATP in bacteria increases prior to bacterial division. In this study, we designed a new machine learning-based algorithm that predicts MIC rapidly, using a dataset that contains ATP luminescence patterns and conventional MICs determined by turbidity. Essential agreement (EA) rates between rapid and conventional MIC were then evaluated. Methods Sixty-three strains of E. coli (ATCC 25922 and clinical isolates from Toyama University Hospital) were tested. Bacterial suspensions were diluted 500-fold in Mueller–Hinton broth from 0.5 McF solutions, and the final concentration of bacteria was 3×105 CFU/mL. The suspensions were dispensed into a 96-well microplate, which had 12 antimicrobials in two-fold dilution series, and the microplate was incubated at 35°C. At each measurement time point, the amount of ATP in a 10 μL aliquot from each well was evaluated by our original measurement system, which can sensitively detect ATP luminescence equivalent to a single bacterium. After 22 hours, MIC was determined conventionally by measuring turbidity. A rapid MIC for each bacterium was estimated by the algorithm based on the dataset consisting of the rest of the 62 strains (leave-one-out cross validation). Results Table 1 shows the EA rate for the 12 antimicrobials; EA rates > 90% were achieved for 7 antimicrobials in 2 hours and for 12 antimicrobials in 3 hours. In 6 hours, an average EA rate > 97% was achieved. Conclusion Using the dataset, our new machine learning-based algorithm predicted MIC rapidly within 2 hours with an EA rate > 90% for 7 antimicrobials. The rapid AST detected by the ATP luminescence method will contribute toward both appropriate antimicrobial treatment and reduction in medication and admission charges. Background Respiratory virus infections are important causes of morbidity and mortality among pediatric and adult patients. These viruses infect respiratory epithelial cells, where they may induce specific metabolite alterations. As a proof-of-concept, we investigate the novel use of liquid chromatography (LC) combined with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Q-TOF) for the study of host cell metabolite alterations to diagnose and differentiate respiratory viruses. Methods We studied nasopharyngeal swab samples positive for respiratory viruses by the eSensor Respiratory Viral Panel (GenMark Diagnostics, Carlsbad, CA). Banked, frozen samples (−80°C) stored in viral transport media were retrieved and thawed. Aliquots of 100 μL were centrifuged at 13.3 × g for 15 minutes, and the filtrate was analyzed by Agilent 6545 Quadrupole LC/Q-TOF (Agilent Technologies, Santa Clara, CA). Compounds were separated using a novel column arrangement based on hydrophobicity and charge using a quaternary solvent manager, followed by accurate mass analysis by LC/Q-TOF. Agilent Mass Profiler 3D principal component analysis was performed, and compound identification was completed using the METLIN metabolite database. Results A total of 235 specimens were tested by LC/Q-TOF, including 195 positive specimens [including adenovirus, coronavirus, influenza A H1N1 and H3N2, influenza B, human metapneumovirus, parainfluenza viruses 1, 2, 3, and 4, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and rhinovirus] as well as 40 negative clinical specimens. LC/Q-TOF primary component analysis (PCA) allowed preliminary identification of key metabolites that distinguished all virus-positive specimens compared with the negative group, and differentiated respiratory viruses from one another including between influenza A 2009 H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes (Figure 1). Conclusion Preliminary data from our LC/Q-TOF analysis show that respiratory viruses exhibit different host cell metabolomic profiles that allow viral differentiation to the species level, and for influenza A virus, the subtype level. This metabolomic approach has substantial potential for diagnostic applications in infectious diseases directly from patient samples, and may be eventually adapted for point-of-care testing. Background Infection occurs in ~1–2% of prosthetic joint replacement surgeries, with staphylococci being the most common cause. TNP-2092 is an investigational drug composed of rifamycin and quinolizinone pharmacophores conjugated via a stable linker. Here, we determined TNP-2092's in vitro activity against biofilms formed by staphylococci associated with prosthetic joint infection and compared activity to that of ciprofloxacin and rifampin alone and in combination, as well as to daptomycin and vancomycin. Methods A total of 80 staphylococcal isolates (40 Staphylococcus aureus and 40 Staphylococcus epidermidis) were studied. Planktonic state minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of TNP-2092, ciprofloxacin, rifampin, ciprofloxacin + fixed concentration (1 mg/mL) rifampin, daptomycin and vancomycin were determined following CLSI guidelines. Tween-80（0.002%）was added to TNP-2092 to prevent drug binding to plastic plates. Minimum biofilm inhibitory concentrations (MBICs) and minimum biofilm bactericidal concentration (MBBCs) were determined as follows. Bacteria were grown in TSB to logarithmic phase and adjusted to a turbidity of 0.5 McFarland; 150 µL aliquots were transferred to individual wells of 96-well flat-bottom plates and the plates covered with 96-pegged lids. Plates were incubated on a shaker for 5 hours at 37℃. Pegged lids were rinsed using 200 µL PBS/well and placed into a microtiter plate containing serial 2-fold drug dilutions in CAMHB Plates were incubated for 20–24 hours at 37°C and MBICs read by visual turbidity. Pegged lids were rinsed with PBS and placed into plates filled with 200 µL CAMHB/well and incubated for 20–24 hours at 37°C after which MBBCs were determined by assessing visual turbidity. Results Results shown in the table. Conclusion TNP-2092 has promising in vitro activity against prosthetic joint infection-associated staphylococcal biofilms. Background Pneumocystis jirovecii is a medically important fungal pathogen responsible for opportunistic infections in immunocompromised hosts with high morbidity and mortality. Compared with standard microscopy based assays, home-brew nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT) have emerged as sensitive tools for the diagnosis of P. jirovecii pneumonia, but their sensitivities vary depending upon selected genetic targets. Recent studies suggest that the mitochondrial small subunit (mtSSU) is a better NAAT target given its higher copy number and stable expression in the disease process. We aimed to develop and evaluate a mtSSU-targeted MultiCode real-time PCR assay that incorporates a sample processing control (SPC) and enables detection of P. jirovecii in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and induced sputum. Methods Firstly, we compared manual DNA extraction using Zymo Quick DNA kit with automated extraction using the NucliSENS easyMAG system after sample pretreatment with either FastPrep mechanical grinding or vortex-based bead beating. We then determined the mouse hepatitis virus SPC (Luminex) spike-in amount, and optimized the PCR conditions on the ABI 7500 PCR system. A new Pneumocystis mtSSU run control was generated by cloning and transforming mtSSU gene into a genetically engineered E. coli strain, and quantified with a home-brew quantitative TaqMan PCR. Lastly, the performance characteristics of the MultiCode PCR assay were determined. Results Mechanical grinding of BALF or sputum before the easyMAG based extraction was better than the other extraction protocols as evidenced by lower C T of mtSSU or SPC. Diluted SPC added to samples before DNA extraction made its C T within 31–34. With the mtSSU run control, the limit of detection of the new assay was 80 copies/mL. No cross-reactivity was found with 9 respiratory viruses, 8 bacteria or 11 fungi. The assay has high reproducibility for three-day detection of the same sample aliquots for mtSSU (C T : 30.0–30.3; CV%: 0.5–1.6) and SPC (C T : 32.1–32.2; CV%: 0.8–2.4). Conclusion We developed a novel MultiCode real-time PCR assay for detection of P. jirovecii in BALF and sputum, which demonstrated high analytical sensitivity, specificity and reproducibility and warrants further clinical validation. Background A complication of cesarean section delivery is its interference with the normal intestinal colonization of the infant, affecting the development of immune system in early life—a process that has been associated with long-term morbidity, such as allergy and diabetes. We evaluated, in CS-delivered infants, whether the normal intestinal microbiome and its early life development could be restored by immediate postnatal transfer of maternal fecal microbiota to the newborn. Methods Seventeen healthy mothers with planned elective CS were recruited and screened thoroughly for infections, after which 7 mothers were included in the study. A fecal sample was processed according to a transplantation protocol and an aliquot (3–7 mg) was orally administered in breast-milk to the newborn during the first feeding. The infants were followed and fecal samples were gathered during the first 12 weeks of age and subsequently at the age of 8–18 months. Results The bacterial communities in the fecal samples of the mothers and their offspring were analyzed by sequencing of 16S rRNA amplicons from isolated fecal DNA and compared with that of 11 nontreated CS-delivered infants and 34 vaginally delivered infants. The fecal microbiota at 3 and 12 weeks was similar between treated CS and vaginally delivered infants, in contrast to that of the untreated CS-delivered infants both in overall composition (P = 0.001, Figure) and development of early-life signature bacteria, i.e. bacteroides and bifidobacteria and clostridia (P < 0.0001). Conclusion The seeding of maternal fecal microbes to the newborn intestine can be safely and successfully mimicked in elective CS by transferring a small amount of maternal fecal microbiome orally to the newborn infant. In these infants, this process results in a microbial development that is highly similar to that of the vaginally born infants, and provides support for the hypothesis that microbial colonization in early life results from a maternal fecal transfer. Background Rates of bacteremia in Ebola virus disease (EVD) are not currently known. Given the potential for secondary bacterial infection during acute EVD, current treatment guidelines recommend empiric use of broad-spectrum antibiotics. We sought to determine rates of bacteremia among patients evaluated for EVD at the ELWA-3 Ebola Treatment Unit in Monrovia, Liberia during the 2013–16 West Africa epidemic. Methods Deidentified blood samples and matched clinical data from 235 Ebola virus (EBOV)-positive patients and 102 EBOV-negative patients were evaluated under a University of Liberia Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation IRB-approved protocol. 0.2 mL aliquots of frozen whole blood samples collected at triage, prior to the administration of antibiotics, were inoculated into BD BACTEC Peds Plus bottles and incubated under aerobic conditions in a BD BACTEC FX40 for 5 days in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease Biosafety Level 4 laboratory in Hamilton, MT. Positive samples were sub-cultured on nonselective sheep blood agar and chocolate agar and pure colonies were selected for identification by 16S sequencing and by matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Results No difference in rates of bacteremia was detected among EBOV-positive vs. EBOV-negative patients – 3.8% and 3.9%, respectively. Predominant isolates included Staphylococcus epidermidis and other coagulase-negative staphylococci, thought consistent with contaminants. Pathogenic species included Staphylococcus aureus and possibly Paenibacillus spp. Conclusion These data suggest that bacteremia does not commonly complicate EVD. However, as both prolonged sample storage and low culture volume may negatively affect sensitivity, additional molecular analyses are needed to support this conclusion.
