We investigate the random bipartite optimal matching problem on a flat torus in two-dimensions, considering general strictly convex power costs of the distance. We extend the successful ansatz first introduced by Caracciolo et al. for the quadratic case, involving a linear Poisson equation, to a non-linear equation of $q$-Poisson type, allowing for a more comprehensive analysis of the optimal transport cost. Our results establish new asymptotic connections between the energy of the solution to the PDE and the optimal transport cost, providing insights on their asymptotic behavior.

This is the first of two works concerning the Sobolev calculus on metric measure spaces and its applications. In this work, we focus on several notions of metric Sobolev space and on their equivalence. More precisely, we give a systematic presentation of first-order $p$-Sobolev spaces, with $p\in[1,\infty)$, defined over a complete and separable metric space equipped with a boundedly-finite Borel measure. We focus on three different approaches: via approximation with Lipschitz functions; by studying the behaviour along curves, in terms either of the curve modulus or of test plans; via integration-by-parts, using Lipschitz derivations with divergence. Eventually, we show that all these approaches are fully equivalent. We emphasise that no doubling or Poincar\'{e} assumption is made, and that we allow also for the exponent $p=1$. In this paper we analyze in detail a few questions related to the theory of functions with bounded $p$-Hessian-Schatten total variation, which are relevant in connection with the theory of inverse problems and machine learning. We prove an optimal density result, relative to the $p$-Hessian-Schatten total variation, of continuous piecewise linear (CPWL) functions in any space dimension $d$, using a construction based on a mesh whose local orientation is adapted to the function to be approximated. We show that not all extremal functions with respect to the $p$-Hessian-Schatten total variation are CPWL. Finally, we prove existence of minimizers of certain relevant functionals involving the $p$-Hessian-Schatten total variation in the critical dimension $d=2$.

In this paper, we characterize the class of extremal points of the unit ball of the Hessian-Schatten total variation (HTV) functional. The underlying motivation for our work stems from a general representer theorem that characterizes the solution set of regularized linear inverse problems in terms of the extremal points of the regularization ball. Our analysis is mainly based on studying the class of continuous and piecewise linear (CPWL) functions. In particular, we show that in dimension $d=2$, CPWL functions are dense in the unit ball of the HTV functional. Moreover, we prove that a CPWL function is extremal if and only if its Hessian is minimally supported. For the converse, we prove that the density result (which we have only proven for dimension $d = 2$) implies that the closure of the CPWL extreme points contains all extremal points.

We show that vector fields $b$ whose spatial derivative $D_xb$ satisfies a Orlicz summability condition have a spatially continuous representative and are well-posed. For the case of sub-exponential summability, their flows satisfy a Lusin (N) condition in a quantitative form, too. Furthermore, we prove that if $D_xb$ satisfies a suitable exponential summability condition then the flow associated to $b$ has Sobolev regularity, without assuming boundedness of ${\rm div}_xb$. We investigate the average minimum cost of a bipartite matching, with respect to the squared Euclidean distance, between two samples of n i.i.d. random points on a bounded Lipschitz domain in the Euclidean plane, whose common law is absolutely continuous with strictly positive H{\"o}lder continuous density. We confirm in particular the validity of a conjecture by D. Benedetto and E. Caglioti stating that the asymptotic cost as n grows is given by the logarithm of n multiplied by an explicit constant times the volume of the domain. Our proof relies on a reduction to the optimal transport problem between the associated empirical measures and a Whitney-type decomposition of the domain, together with suitable upper and lower bounds for local and global contributions, both ultimately based on PDE tools. We further show how to extend our results to more general settings, including Riemannian manifolds, and also give an application to the asymptotic cost of the random quadratic bipartite travelling salesperson problem.

We study the stability of a class of action functionals induced by gradients of convex functions with respect to Mosco convergence, under mild assumptions on the underlying space.

Given a real function $f$, the rate function for the large deviations of the diffusion process of drift $\nabla f$ given by the Freidlin-Wentzell theorem coincides with the time integral of the energy dissipation for the gradient flow associated with $f$. This paper is concerned with the stability in the hilbertian framework of this common action functional when $f$ varies. More precisely, we show that if $(f_h)_h$ is uniformly $\lambda$-convex for some $\lambda \in \mathbb{R}$ and converges towards $f$ in the sense of Mosco convergence, then the related functionals $\Gamma$-converge in the strong topology of curves.

Monge-Amp\`ere gravitation is a modification of the classical Newtonian gravitation where the linear Poisson equation is replaced by the nonlinear Monge-Amp\`ere equation. This paper is concerned with the rigorous derivation of Monge-Amp\`ere gravitation for a finite number of particles from the stochastic model of a Brownian point cloud, in the spirit of a previous work by the third author [A double large deviation principle for Monge-Amp\`ere gravitation, 2016]. The main step in this derivation is the $\Gamma-$convergence of the good rate functions corresponding to a one-parameter family of large deviation principles. Surprisingly, the derived model includes dissipative phenomena. As an illustration, we show that it leads to sticky collisions in one space dimension.

We show that, on a $2$-dimensional compact manifold, the optimal transport map in the semi-discrete random matching problem is well-approximated in the $L^2$-norm by identity plus the gradient of the solution to the Poisson problem $-\Delta f^{n,t} = \mu^{n,t}-1$, where $\mu^{n,t}$ is an appropriate regularization of the empirical measure associated to the random points. This shows that the ansatz of Caracciolo et al. (Scaling hypothesis for the Euclidean bipartite matching problem) is strong enough to capture the behavior of the optimal map in addition to the value of the optimal matching cost. This note is dedicated to the study of the asymptotic behaviour of sets of finite perimeter over RCD(K,N) metric measure spaces. Our main result asserts existence of a Euclidean tangent half-space almost everywhere with respect to the perimeter measure and it can be improved to an existence and uniqueness statement when the ambient is non collapsed. As an intermediate tool, we provide a complete characterization of the class of RCD(0,N) spaces for which there exists a nontrivial function satisfying the equality in the 1-Bakry-\'Emery inequality. This result is of independent interest and it is new, up to our knowledge, even in the smooth framework.

In this paper we study the family of embeddings $\Phi_t$ of a compact $RCD^*(K,N)$ space $(X,d,m)$ into $L^2(X,m)$ via eigenmaps. Extending part of the classical results by B\'erard, B\'erard-Besson-Gallot, known for closed Riemannian manifolds, we prove convergence as $t\downarrow 0$ of the rescaled pull-back metrics $\Phi_t^*g_{L^2}$ in $L^2(X,m)$ induced by $\Phi_t$. Moreover we discuss the behavior of $\Phi_t^*g_{L^2}$ with respect to measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence and $t$.
