It is the first dataset of its kind for the Northern states and offers insights into the history of slavery in the region, including the demand for enslaved labor, the shift from imported to domestic slaves, and the growth of the enslaved population in the Hudson Valley. Charles Williams has always been one of the more overlooked members of the Inklings, and the continued neglect of his poetry and "supernatural thrillers" suggests that he is not likely to experience a dramatic increase in popularity anytime soon. Similarly, Russell Kirk is an American historian who will always be better known for writing The Conservative Mind in 1953 than for any of the dozens of short stories and novels he wrote, many of which deal with ghostly or supernatural themes. In fact, Kirk acknowledged Williams to be an important influence on his fiction; this influence is perhaps most evident in Kirk's final novel, 1979's Lord of the Hollow Dark. In this "Gothick romance," as Kirk described it, a group of pilgrims gathers at a dilapidated mansion in Scotland, at which various satanic rituals are performed in the week leading up to Ash Wednesday. The novel features ghostly apparitions, psychological and spiritual horror, and a mingling of the supernatural and material, all of which calls to mind Williams' first, unforgettable novel, War in Heaven. The neglect of both authors has led to a lack of interest in the obvious thematic links between these two books, which this paper is intended to address. Aside from these links, I shall also discuss how the authors' respective religious views contribute to their differing approaches to certain subjects, such as time and the nature of Hell. The article aims to demonstrate that the historiographic research on the Italian-American relations during the Fascist Era has reached remarkable results. Scholars now have at their disposition studies composed by Italian and American historians that analyse all the aspects of those relations. In fact, it is possible to find books which explain not only the diplomatic, economic, and financial dimension of the relations between the two countries, but also the image of Fascist Italy that existed in the United States or the vicissitudes of the Italian immigrants who were attracted by the Fascist propaganda. In addition, there are books and articles which focus on specific aspects. So, if an historian wanted to collect all this historiographical material, he could make an exhaustive study. The American historian Edward Mead Earle has until recently escaped the attention of historians of war, although his edited volume of 1943, Makers of Modern Strategy: Military Thought from Machiavelli to Hitler, was a seminal work in the field, widely read by military historians. Whilst recent scholarship has sought to situate Earle as a key figure in the pre-Second World War development of American security studies, this article emphasizes Earle's role as a historian compiling a volume which was distinctly historical in approach, tone, and scope. While recent historical studies have uncovered the intercontinental reputations of New England alchemists, much still remains to be known about actual attitudes concerning alchemy in the early colonies. Focusing on a corpus of roughly a dozen untranslated, and all but entirely unexamined Latin orations (ca. 200 pages) composed by Harvard College's presidents and students in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century, I argue that these new sources reveal the ambivalent, occasionally antagonistic attitude that educated New England men held towards the art of alchemy. Appreciating what they regarded as, in some cases, selfless, Christian efforts to cure diseases, these Harvard elite speakers still worried that alongside pious investigators had cropped up some self-serving charlatans, those who cared not for the communal promises of the art, but only the base financial reward. The use of quantitative methods in leading historical journals increased dramatically in the 1960s and declined sharply after the mid-1980s. The JIH is an invaluable source for analysis of the boom and bust in the use of quantitative methods in history; the journal remained under the same editors for almost fifty years and made no attempt to change editorial policies during that period. Shifting patterns of content and authorship in the JIH from the 1980s to the early 2000s reveal how the journal responded to a dramatic decline in quantitative submissions by U.S.-based historians. Recent years have seen a revival of quantification both in the JIH and in mainstream historical journals, especially among historians located at institutions outside the United States. Charles Fanning is a founding figure in the study of Irish American literature. In this interview, Fanning discusses the backgrounds of his scholarly career and the emergence of Irish American literature as a subspecialty. He notes his indebtedness to his mentor John V. Kelleher. Fanning discusses his research career, taking note of a number of the authors and writings he has retrieved and analyzed; prominent among these are the "Mr. Dooley" columns of the Chicago humorist Finley Peter Dunne. Fanning's indisputable masterwork is The Irish Voice in America: Irish-American Fiction from the 1760s to the 1980s (1991), which he discusses here. He comments on the relevance of regions, gender, and religion in Irish American fiction. He offers extensive remarks on the realist novelist James T. Farrell, whom Fanning places at the center of the twentieth-century tradition. He makes observations on the current status of Irish American ethnicity and its literary expression. An essay is presented on four monthly installments of "The Diary of a Public Man," which were published in the "North American Review" in 1879. The diaries were begun just before the start of the U.S. Civil War and offered behind-the-scenes accounts of discussions among prominent U.S. politicians, including Stephen A. Douglas. The author presents an in-depth analysis of the diaries in an attempt to untangle its hidden history.

Sir Michael Howard has made an enormous contribution to writing about war since 1950. This essay offers a considered assessment of his work and devotes due attention to the context in which he wrote and the influences that shaped his outlook. Three essential themes have permeated his work: the German problem (and thus the British problem that complicated its resolution), the Soviet problem, and the relationship between war and society. The essay charts his efforts to impart a framework to the study of war and the degree to which it has been shaped by societal, but especially organizational and moral forces. Ruby forged friendships with members of the Oglala Lakota Tribe while serving with the U.S. Public Health Service. Brown had served as a history teacher. Modern Chinese literature in translation deserves more attention than it currently commands in America. In this interview, Jeffrey C. Kinkley, an American historian, sinologist, and translator of the work of Shen Congwen and other Chinese writers, shares his interpretation of the different cultural and aesthetic norms of literature that are frequently encountered in the process of literary translation. Issues covered include the dynamic relationship between the translator and publishers, editors, and book reviewers; the reception of Chinese literature as compared with other "foreign" literatures in America; the English-speaking world's reception of translated modern Chinese literature as compared with that of contemporary Chinese literature; and approaches to promoting one's own culture. This study concerns the representation of colonial Latin American history and the characterization of Daniel/Hatuey in the film-about-a-film También la lluvia (Icíar Bollaín, 2010). A metacinematic work comprising historical study and political commentary, También la lluvia has received mixed critical reactions regarding its portrayal of the historical and social inequalities it analyses. This article examines the ambiguous nature of the work by analysing the motif of conversion. It argues that, by foregrounding the contemporary conversion story of Costa, the film sacrifices nuanced historical attention to the colonial past it dramatizes and sustained development of one of its apparently central characters: Daniel/Hatuey, who is repeatedly converted into narrative and symbolic figures of secondary prominence, despite their importance to the development and legibility of the work as a whole.
