The Joint Assembly Line Balancing and Feeding Problem (JALBFP) assigns a line feeding mode to each component (Assembly Line Feeding Problem) and each task to a workplace of a station (Assembly Line Balancing Problem). Current literature offers numerous optimisation models that solve these problems sequentially. However, only few optimisation models, provide a joint solution. To solve the JALBFP for a multi-manned assembly line, we propose a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model and a heuristic that relies on the Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) framework by considering multiple workplaces per station and three different feeding policies: line stocking, travelling kitting and sequencing. The objective function minimises the cost of the whole assembly system which considers supermarket, transportation, assembly operations, and investment costs. Although the JALBFP requires higher computation times, it leads to a higher total cost reduction compared to the sequential approach. Through a numerical study, we validate the heuristic approach and find that the average deviation to the MILP model is around 1%. We also compare the solution of the JALBFP with that of the sequential approach and find an average total cost reduction of 10.1% and a maximum total cost reduction of 43.8%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In semi-arid regions, production of good quality fodder is a challenge; cereal-legume intercropping can be a better alternative in improving forage yield and quality. The present study was conducted to assess the performance of feather Pennisetum (FP) in groundnut (GN) intercropping and for determining a sustainable forage cropping system. Therefore, an experiment was conducted with groundnut and feather Pennisetum as a monocrop and intercrop (2GN:1FP and 3GN:1FP), where FP was harvested at 60, 75, 90, and 120 days after sowing. The land equivalent ratio of intercropping was 15–29% higher indicating yield advantages and economic benefits over sole stands. Crude protein and fiber content was increased by 10 and 8% in intercropping, lignin content was reduced by 15% and neutral detergent fiber by 5% indicating the better quality of FP due to intercropping with GN. Intercropping of GN and FP increased the content of non-fibrous carbohydrate (13%), gas production (6.5%) and volatile fatty acids (6%) indicating better fodder digestibility. Furthermore, intercropping of GN and FP also increased the mineral content by 8-20% than sole stands. Apart from productivity, intercropping of FP and GN, improved water use efficiency over sole stand of both component crops. Considering, forage yield, quality and profitability, 3GN:1FP intercropping was superior and can be recommended as an alternative to monoculture. Our study concluded that in semi-arid regions double dual cropping of food and fodder can be achieved by intercropping which can provide opportunities to produce food and fodder simultaneously for livelihood, animal rearing and long-term sustainability. Maize is the mainstay of food and animal feed globally. Maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais, accounts for a significant global loss of stored maize annually. Twenty-one maize genotypes were evaluated for their reaction to attack by maize weevil during storage and the influence of nutritional contents on their response to the weevil attack. Fifty grams of whole grains of each genotype were infested in three replications with 20 unsexed weevils in a 250 ml test tube and kept under ambient conditions for 36 days. The nutritional attributes of the maize genotypes were determined. Genotype TZB-SR-A had the thickest (7.32 mm) grains, while TZEE-WSTR had the thinnest grains (3.46 mm). Crude protein ranged from 8.43 to 12.78% for NG/SA/07/029 and TZB-SR-B, respectively. Beta-carotene ranged from 38.91 to 51.22% for Igbogbo Local and EVDT-Y2000-STR, respectively. Genotypes TZM-212, TZM-1296, TZB-SR-B, and TZM-1311 showed no appreciable loss in grain weight, while EVDT-Y2000-STR, which had the highest beta-carotene content, showed the highest weight loss of 2 g. These indicate sufficient differences among the maize genotypes for improvement for weevil resistance. Furthermore, the findings of the present study suggest a potential role of beta-carotene in influencing the feeding preference of S. zeamais on maize grains. BACKGROUND: Bio‐electro‐Fenton (BEF) systems, specifically microbial fuel cell (MFC) driven electro‐Fenton (EF) systems, have gained significant attention in wastewater treatment in recent years. The role of the cathode catalyst in BEF is crucial, as it undergoes O2 reduction via a 2e− oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to produce H2O2. In this study, we have harnessed the abundant lignocellulosic composition of cocoa pod husk (CPH) to prepare a novel iron‐doped heterogeneous Fenton catalyst for the BEF system. Cocoa is typically grown for its wet beans, which constitute only one third of cocoa fruit by weight, while CPH makes up about two‐thirds of the weight and is often discarded as by‐product or waste. As a result, approximately 10 million tons of CPH are produced globally each year, highlighting the potential for transforming it into a value‐added product. To date, CPH has been utilised as a natural fertiliser, soil amendment, biomass fuel, poultry and livestock feed ingredient, and more. RESULTS: The presence of mesoporous structure, iron content, oxygen containing functional groups, and prominent reduction peaks in cyclic voltammetry validated the Fe‐doped cocoa husk biochar's (Fe‐CHB) potential to act as an ORR catalyst. The BEF system achieved an open circuit voltage, current, and power densities of 0.697 V, 0.15 A/m2, and 0.040 W/m2, respectively, at an optimum resistance of 350 Ω. Optimisation of the process parameters using RSM and ANN predicted maximum dye removal efficiencies of 93.34% and 92.45%, respectively, at dye and substrate concentrations of 10 mg/L and 1 g/L. These predictions closely aligned with the experimental findings of 92.5%. CONCLUSION: The synthesised catalyst provided large surface area, electrical conductivity, superior ORR catalytic efficiencies, and ample sites for H2O2 activation. Introducing beneficial productivity and nutritional traits into food, feed and forage crops utilising the tools of biotechnology can lead to improvements via genetic modification that cannot be achieved by traditional plant breeding. The timelines and costs are significant, and the regulatory hurdles can lead to some promising traits failing to be commercialised. These challenges mean that large commodity crops are the primary beneficiaries of biotechnology. New Zealand being primarily a grazing pastoral agricultural market and small in international terms, faces greater challenges. The species used in pastoral agriculture have relatively small seed markets and therefore limited investment for genetic improvement. The nutritional quality of feed and forages both in composition and in energy density per ha has a major influence on animal productivity and the environmental impacts of agriculture. Through government and private industry support, AgResearch has developed novel approaches to improve plant photosynthesis, energy density, and nutritional quality that has applications in crops globally. This review discusses the different challenges and solutions to improving plant nutrient density and outlines the benefits of these novel biotechnology traits in animal forage and feed crops. Challenges exist worldwide for the storage of animal feed, though year-long feeding of livestock is especially difficult in northern climates, including Canada. Usage of silage allows for crops to be harvested at the optimal nutritional value and stored for extended periods in customized storage systems. This case study investigated various feed management practices typical of small beef cattle feedlot farms in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Crop samples were collected monthly and analyzed for mycotoxins and fungal secondary metabolites by liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Stored barley contained modest concentrations of deoxynivalenol and related compounds, as well as near trace amounts of fumonisin. Stored hay contained low concentrations of deoxynivalenol and beauvericin from the field. Hot spots of the Penicillium metabolite citrinin were detected after 7–8 months of storage in barley (39.2 ng g−1). Citrinin was also detected after 7–8 months in hay (16.3–17.5 ng g−1) along with the appearance of trace amounts of other storage toxins, including penitrem A (8.84 ng g−1), griseofulvin (34.8 ng g−1) and sterigmatocystin (14.1–261 ng g−1). This case study was a unique opportunity to use 'citizen science' to observe the onset of postharvest fungi and associated mycotoxins in various storage conditions allowing for the farmer to make necessary modifications before major problems begin. An improved understanding of the storage conditions that foster fungal growth and mycotoxin production in this working farm led to better agronomic practices, ultimately improving feed quality, livestock health, and profitability. SUMMARY: Pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) are toxic specialized metabolites produced in several plant species and frequently contaminate herbal teas or livestock feed. In comfrey (Symphytum officinale, Boraginaceae), they are produced in two different organs of the plant, the root and young leaves. In this study, we demonstrate that homospermidine oxidase (HSO), a copper‐containing amine oxidase (CuAO) responsible for catalyzing the formation of the distinctive pyrrolizidine ring in PAs, is encoded by two individual genes. Specifically, SoCuAO1 is expressed in young leaves, while SoCuAO5 is expressed in roots. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated knockout of socuao5 resulted in hairy roots (HRs) unable to produce PAs, supporting its function as HSO in roots. Plants regenerated from socuao5 knockout HRs remained completely PA‐free until the plants began to develop inflorescences, indicating the presence of another HSO that is expressed only during flower development. Stable expression of SoCuAO1 in socuao5 knockout HRs rescued the ability to produce PAs. In vitro assays of both enzymes transiently expressed in Nicotiana benthamiana confirmed their HSO activity and revealed the ability of HSO to control the stereospecific cyclization of the pyrrolizidine backbone. The observation that the first specific step of PA biosynthesis catalyzed by homospermidine synthase requires only one gene copy, while two independent paralogs are recruited for the subsequent homospermidine oxidation in different tissues of the plant, suggests a complex regulation of the pathway. This adds a new level of complexity to PA biosynthesis, a system already characterized by species‐specific, tight spatio‐temporal regulation, and independent evolutionary origins in multiple plant lineages. Significance Statement: Pyrrolizidine alkaloids are involved in the chemical defense of comfrey against herbivores and are synthesized in roots and young leaves. Using CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and various biochemical experiments, we show that pyrrolizidine alkaloid biosynthesis in the two different organs of comfrey is realized by two different paralogs of homospermidine oxidase, revealing another aspect of biosynthetic complexity in plant specialized metabolism. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of synbiotic microcapsules through feed on growth performance and immune response of Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in field testing during IMNV disease outbreaks and fluctuating weather. Four groups of shrimps (4.11 ± 0.05 g) with four replicates were fed with different doses of synbiotic microcapsules SIN 0 (0%), SIN 0.5 (0.5%), SIN 1 (1%), and SIN 1.5 (1.5%) for 60 days with a feeding frequency of 4 times a day (07.00, 11.00, 15.00, and 19.00) based on a feeding rate from 4% (w/w) for average body weight < 4 g, 3% (w/w) for average body weight 4–10 g, and reduced until 2% (w/w) for average body weight 10–25 g, depending on the feed index adapting to operational standards procedures for Pacific white shrimp cultivation production from PT Steladus. The synbiotic microcapsules consisted of prebiotic mannan oligosaccharide/MOS, probiotic Pseudoalteromonas piscicida (1UB), and Bacillus cereus (BR2). This study focused on parameters of growth performance (survival rate/SR, specific growth rate/SGR, feed conversion ratio/FCR), immune response (total hemocyte count/THC, differential hemocyte count/DHC, respiratory burst/RB, phenoloxidase/PO activity, phagocytic activity/PA), microbiology (total bacterial count/TBC, 1UB + BR2 TetR count, total Vibrio count/TVC), and histopathology. The results showed significant results that synbiotic microcapsules increased SR, SGR also reduced FCR with the best results in SIN 1.5 (SR: 93.50 ± 1.30%, SGR: 4.83 ± 0.01% days−1, and FCR: 1.16 ± 0.02). Immune response of THC, RB, PO, and PA in the synbiotic microcapsule treatment showed higher values with the best results in the SIN 1.5 treatment, while DHC had no significant difference. TBC, 1UB, and BR2 TetR count values increased until the 60th day, with the highest value in the SIN 1.5, while TVC showed the lowest value in both intestinal and hepatopancreas organs. Histopathological results showed that hepatopancreas and intestinal organs experienced tissue damage in all treatments, with synbiotic microcapsules showing less damage when compared to SIN 0. In conclusion, supplementation of dual-species synbiotic microcapsules through feed can improve growth performance and immune response and suppress Vibrio during the outbreak with the best dose of 1.5% synbiotic microcapsules. The effects of cyclical feeding restriction (3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 days of feeding per week) on the performance of juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in a biofloc technology system (BFT) were evaluated in this study for 77 days. Fifteen experimental units (400L) with temperature control (mean 28.2 °C) randomly distributed 1500 fish (0.42 ± 0.02 g). Fish were fed commercial feed (46.7 g of crude protein and 4475.5 kcal kg−1 of gross energy) up to satiation. Feeding cycles with different restrictions (p < 0.05) influenced animal growth but not survival and final density (p > 0.05), which remained around 94% and 235 fish.m−3, respectively. Juveniles fed 6 days a week showed 1.25 of feeding efficiency, while animals fed 3 days a week (more restricted) showed hyperphagia but did not exhibit compensatory growth. Changes in the morphology of hepatocytes (presence of vacuoles, displacement of the nucleus to the periphery, and fatty degeneration) were observed with an increase in feeding days, and a high degree of hepatic steatosis (p < 0.05). Water quality parameters remained within acceptable limits for the species and system operation. Feeding regimes influenced the characteristics of bioflocs (total suspended solids and porosity) and the abundance of microorganisms (p < 0.05). Nutritionally, less restricted diets (6 and 7 days of feeding per week) produced more protein (38.3 and 40.6% CP) and energy bioflocs (2252.8 and 2313 kcal.kg−1) (p < 0.05), while protein, lipid, and body energy were significantly lower (p < 0.05) with the more restricted diet. The composition of microorganisms was influenced by the feeding regimes (p < 0.05). Results demonstrated that the occurrence of total compensatory growth (6 days of feeding per week) represents an economic advantage with a reduction of 26.8% of feed and greater profitability in the unitary commercialization of tilapia juveniles. Lupins are used in animal feed because of their excellent nutritional composition. Australian and European Lupinus angustifolius seeds are incorporated in compound feed of calves for veal production in Belgium. To investigate the co-occurrence of quinolizidine alkaloids (QAs) and phomopsin A (PHO A) in lupin seeds and lupin-containing feed, and the potential transfer to animal-derived foods, representative samples were obtained from various actors in the chain. A UHPLC-MS/MS method was validated for the simultaneous quantification of seven QAs and PHO A in relevant matrices. Results indicate highly consistent total QA (TQA) levels in Australian lupins (173 ± 24 mg/kg) (n = 25), while European samples showed a high variability (1442 ± 1497 mg/kg) (n = 15). PHO A was detected in 7 of 40 samples. Lupin-containing feed had a mean TQA content of 42 ± 28 mg/kg (n = 20). An in vivo feeding trial demonstrated the transfer of QAs to muscle and liver of calves that were fed the lupin-containing feed. Highest concentrations were found for lupanine in liver tissue samples (67 ± 46 µg/kg). PHO A concentrations were below the LOD in all feed and tissue samples. Pelleting has been identified as a means of improving animal performance by limiting selective feeding of livestock. However, it is a complex process that has a number of input variables that must be routinely monitored and adjusted. The interaction between the operational parameters may also give more knowledge of the process. In this study, a screw-type livestock feed pelleting machine was designed and fabricated having a maximum throughput of 0.43 kg/min. Using a full factorial design with three levels of die thickness (5, 7 and 9 mm) and two preconditioners (water and cassava starch), average density of pellets produced was greater than 1g/cm3 For the determination of the density and pellet length, and consequently the durability, the die thickness, plasticiser and interaction of die thickness with plasticiser were significant (p < 0.05). Herbivorous invaders promote changes in community structure and ecosystem functioning. The apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata, is an invader with strong impacts on wetland vegetation and aquatic crops. While able to feed on diverse trophic resources using different feeding mechanisms it is usually regarded as a macrophytophage. However, studies showing direct evidence of what they actually eat in natural waterbodies are few and their results do not fully support such a feeding habit. We analyzed the digestive contents of P. canaliculata using a micrographic technique to describe the spatiotemporal variation of its natural diet within its native range. Stomach and intestine contents were similar but the intestines were never empty and their volume and diversity were generally higher. Detritus was the dominant food item (84.1% of total abundance) and was consumed by all the snails whereas macrophytes were eaten by only half of the snails and represented only an 8.6% of total abundance; filamentous algae, animal remains and grasses showed lower than 5% of total abundance. The spatiotemporal variation in these feeding patterns was minor, despite the among site variation in macrophyte coverage and richness. In the Encadenadas del Oeste basin, P. canaliculata behaves as a specialist on detritus, with some individuals occasionally consuming other resources and can thus be described as an opportunistic generalist omnivore. The impacts of apple snail invasions on both detritus and on other detritivores have seldom been studied although they may have important negative and positive effects, respectively, on dead vegetal matter decomposition. Ferritin, transferrin, and transferrin receptors I and II play a vital role in iron metabolism, health, and indication of iron deficiency anaemia in fish. To evaluate the use of high‐iron diets to prevent or reverse channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) anaemia of unknown causes, we investigated the expression of these iron‐regulatory genes and proteins in channel catfish fed plant‐based diets. Catfish fingerlings were fed five diets supplemented with 0 (basal), 125, and 250 mg/kg of either inorganic iron or organic iron for 2 weeks. Ferritin, transferrin, and transferrin receptor I and II mRNA and protein expression levels in fish tissues (liver, intestine, trunk kidney, and head kidney) and plasma were determined. Transferrin (iron transporter) and TfR (I and II) genes were generally highly expressed in fish fed the basal diet compared to those fed the iron‐supplemented diets. In contrast, ferritin (iron storage) genes were more expressed in the trunk kidney of fish fed the iron‐supplemented diets than in those fed the basal diet. Our results demonstrate that supplementing channel catfish plant‐based diets with iron from either organic or inorganic iron sources affected the expression of the iron‐regulatory genes and increased body iron status in the fish. The commercialization of pine nuts generates major economic benefits for the Mediterranean basin. This has been reduced due to an increase in cone and seed damage associated with the spread of the western conifer seed bug (WCSB) throughout the Mediterranean region and the Dry Cone Syndrome appearing on pine cones. Studies on several conifer species have associated cone and seed damage with WCSB feeding.To relate cone and seed damage of stone pine to WCSB feeding, one exposure and exclusion trial of cones to the feeding of the natural WCSB population was carried out. To determine the seasonality of cone and seed damage caused by this pest, another trial consisting of bagging cones with insects was performed with first‐, second‐ and third‐year cones at different stages of cone development.The natural WCSB population was associated with cone abortion in second‐year cones (unprotected: 43.6% vs. protected: 2.7%), a decreased number of seeds per cone (82.0 vs. 105.3), kernel yield (1.8% vs. 3.8%) and proportion of sound kernels (35.6% vs. 73.6%), and numerous types of kernel damage.Cone mortality in first‐ and third‐year cones bagged with insects decreased as the bagging date advanced. A temporal sequence of kernel damage in third‐year cones (aborted, dry embryo without endosperm, and totally or partially damaged endosperm) was reported for seed development and the timing of WCSB feeding.Our findings may be useful in the management of WCSB populations to prevent significant damage to the stone pine nut crop. Background: Diagnosis of canine adverse food reactions (AFRs) is based on vague criteria, such as '>50% improvement' during elimination diet trial (EDT) followed by 'deterioration' during provocation test (PT). Objective: The objective of the study was to use predefined criteria to evaluate response during EDT [i.e., Owner Global Assessment of Treatment Efficacy (OGATE) = good‐to‐excellent] and relapse during PT [i.e., Owner Global Assessment of Challenge Deterioration (OGACD) = moderate‐to‐severe and/or >100% increase of lesional (Canine Atopic Dermatitis Extent and Severity Index, 4th iteration, CADESI‐04) and/or of pruritus (pruritus Visual Analog Scale, PVAS) scores]. Animals: Twenty‐nine dogs with atopic dermatitis. Materials and Methods: An extensively hydrolysed diet was fed to all dogs followed, in seven of 11 nonresponders, by a second home‐made novel‐protein EDT. Dogs responding to either EDT were challenged with their previous diet. Results: Thirteen (44.8%) dogs were diagnosed with AFRs: at the end of EDT, their OGATE was good (9 of 13; 69.2%) or excellent (four of 13; 30.8%), and both CADESI‐04 (46.7%) and PVAS (71.1%) had decreased significantly; at the end of PT, OGACD was moderate or severe in 12 of 13 (92.3%) dogs, and both CADESI‐04 (127.9%) and PVAS (181.8%) had increased significantly. Of the 16 dogs without AFRs, 6 (37.5%) responded to the commercial (n = 5) or home‐made (n = 1) diet [OGATE = good (three of six) or excellent (three of six)], with significant concurrent reduction of CADESI‐04 and nonsignificant reduction of PVAS, yet they did not relapse during PT. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: The proposed (predefined) criteria for the evaluation of response during EDT and deterioration during PT seem reliable and are easily applicable in clinical practice and research. The objective of this study was to assess the oxygen pulse and heart rate method (O2 P-HR) using a respiration chamber at different measurement times for estimate the heat production (HP) of lambs fed increasing levels of sunflower meal in their diet. Twenty-four lambs were assigned to four experimental diets (0, 100, 200, and 300 g of sunflower meal kg-1 DM). Heat production was estimated using the O2 P-HR (HPO2P) method and a respirometry chamber (HPRC). Measurements were obtained by simultaneously measuring heart rate (HR) and oxygen consumption over 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 h. A flow-through respirometry chamber for small ruminants was used to determine oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide and methane production. Data on dietary treatment, measurement times and their interactions were analyzed as repeated measures using mixed model procedures and Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) estimation. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to compare techniques. There was no effect of the different levels of sunflower meal inclusion on VO2 and heat production. The HPO2P (126.16 kcal/ BW0.75/day) was 2% higher than that of the HPRC (124.61 kcal/ BW0.75/day), and the correlation coefficients was 0.628. The coefficient of variation was greater for the HPO2P (21.33%) than for HPRC (11.44%). HR (beats/min), VO2 (mL/min/BW0.75) and O2 P-HR (mL/beat) required measurement times of 24, 15 and 9 hours, respectively. The use of insects as animal feed has the potential to be a green revolution for animal agriculture as insects are a rich source of high-quality protein. Insect farming must overcome challenges such as product affordability and scalability before it can be widely incorporated as animal feed. An alternative is to harvest insect pests from the environment using mass trapping devices and use them as animal feed. For example, intensive agricultural environments generate large quantities of pestiferous insects and with the right harvest technologies, these insects can be used as a protein supplement in traditional animal daily rations. Most insect trapping devices are limited by the biomass they can collect. In that context, and with the goal of using wild collected insects as animal feed, the United States Department of Agriculture-Biomass Harvest Trap (USDA-BHT) was designed and built. The USDA-BHT is a valuable mass trapping device developed to efficiently attract, harvest, and store flying insects from naturally abundant agricultural settings. The trap offers a modular design with adjustable capabilities, and it is an inexpensive device that can easily be built with commonly available parts and tools. Global population continuous growth and increasing consumers' demands for protein-rich diets have posed sustainability challenges for traditional livestock feed sources. Consequently, exploring alternative and sustainable protein sources has become imperative to address the environmental burden and resource limitations associated with conventional ingredients. With respect to food security assurance, insects have emerged as a promising solution due to their exceptional nutritional profile, rapid reproduction rates, and low environmental impact. In the present pilot study, 10% of a soybean meal-based diet was replaced by adult mosquitoes harvested from rice fields. The objective was to assess the effect of this partial substitution on meat quality aspects and consumer acceptance. A total of 40 Cobb hybrid broiler chickens were randomly placed in a control and a mosquito-fed group. The study was conducted for 42 days and carcass physicochemical, nutritional, and microbiological characteristics, as well as sensory attributes were evaluated. Overall, results regarding quality attributes were comparable between the control and the treatment group. The organoleptic evaluation showed that the thighs from the mosquito-fed group had the highest overall consumer acceptance. Studies have investigated the potential of using farmed insects in animal feeds; however, little research has been done using wild-caught insects for this purpose. Concerns about inadequate quantities collected, environmental impacts, and the spread of pathogens contribute to the preferred utilization of farmed insects. Nevertheless, by harvesting certain pest species from intensified agricultural operations, producers could provide their animals with affordable and sustainable protein sources while also reducing pest populations. This study explores the possibility of collecting large quantities of pest flies from livestock operations and analyzes the flies' nutritional content, potential pathogen load, and various disinfection methods. Using a newly designed mass collection-trapping device, we collected 5 kg of biomass over 13 wk, primarily house flies, from a poultry facility. While a substantial number of pests were removed from the environment, there was no reduction in the fly population. Short-read sequencing was used to compare the bacterial communities carried by flies from differing source populations, and the bacterial species present in the fly samples varied based on farm type and collection time. Drying and milling the wild-caught flies as well as applying an additional heat treatment significantly reduced the number of culturable bacteria present in or on the flies, though their pathogenicity remains unknown. Importantly, these disinfection methods did not affect the nutritional value of the processed flies. Further research is necessary to fully assess the safety and viability of integrating wild-caught insects into livestock feed; however, these data show promising results in favor of such a system. In ancient times, the shoots of certain species within the Cytisus genus were used as animal feed. Cytisus striatus is a plentiful and widespread shrub that has long been utilized as a soil fertilizer in the Iberian Peninsula. The flowers of this shrub have traditionally been employed for medicinal purposes. However, the nutritional value of yellow broom flowers and fruits remains largely unexplored. In this study, flowers and fruit of C. striatus (Cytisus striatus) were collected from natural shrubs at three different locations in Portugal during the same year. An analytical assessment of their macro and micronutrient content was conducted. Regarding nutritional composition, flowers and fruits exhibited a fibre content of 18% and 42%, protein content of 21% and 12%, lipid content of 2% and 1%, carbohydrate content of 43% and 14%, and ash content of 4% and 3%, respectively. Potassium was the most abundant mineral, with concentrations of approximately 20,094 mg/kg in the flowers and 11,746 mg/kg in the fruits, followed by calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. Compared to some edible flowers and fruits, these plant parts of C. striatus showed macro and micronutrient values similar to species such as lavender, lupins, and cowpea pod husks. The evolution and spread of herbicide-resistant weeds threatens long-term sustainability of Canadian agro-ecosystems. Herbicide-resistant weeds increase management inputs and costs, increase off-target and environmental exposure to pesticides, reduce yield quality and quantity, and impede harvest efficiency. Amaranthus species including Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Wats.) and waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus (Moq.) J.D. Sauer) are particularly concerning due to both their propensity towards herbicide resistance evolution, their history of invasion, and their spread in agro-ecosystems. A biovigilance approach is taken to build awareness of these pigweeds' initial invasion and spread in the USA. Characteristics of their identification, potential hybridization, and known herbicide resistance evolution are reviewed. Fourteen species of Amaranthus are found in Canada, nine of which (including waterhemp) possess herbicide-resistant biotypes. A total of 45 hybrids between various Canadian Amaranthus species with each other or Palmer amaranth have been noted. Hybrids have been experimentally produced or observed from herbarium specimens, with three cases of herbicide resistance transfer notably with Palmer amaranth or waterhemp. Mitigation strategies will depend on successful species identification and herbicide resistance status determination. Common pathways for Palmer amaranth introductions in the northern USA include both animal feed systems with grain screenings and crop production systems including seed and equipment contamination. Regional awareness campaigns will be critical to support Canadian farmers in identifying and quickly mitigating invasions of Palmer amaranth and waterhemp to prevent establishment and spread of infestations into new areas. Barley is a major grain crop in Canada and is used for generating malt, in addition to being used as human food and animal feed. Differentiating barley varieties is important for malt quality assurance and grain handling. Here, we present a DNA-based testing method for the identification of Canadian barley varieties. The method uses 24 custom TaqMan genotyping assays, which are analyzed using the high-throughput SmartChip system (Takara Bio Inc.). Fodder Galega (Galega orientalis Lam.) is a perennial legume adapted to the temperate regions of the world. The objective of this research was to compare the performance of fodder Galega to alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia Scop.), and cicer milkvetch (Astragalus cicer L.) in monocultures and grass–legume mixtures. From 2018 to 2020, a multiple-location trial was conducted at Swift Current, Saskatoon, Melfort, SK and Beaverlodge, AB, Canada. The average forage mass of fodder Galega in monoculture was 3226, 1176, and 1678 kg·ha–1 at Melfort, Saskatoon, and Swift Current, respectively, and was lower than alfalfa. However, fodder Galega and alfalfa had similar forage mass at Beaverlodge (7900 and 7670 kg·ha−1, respectively). The proportion of fodder Galega in the grass–legume mixtures was 36%–42% in 2019, decreasing to 3%–27% at Saskatoon. At Swift Current, fodder Galega in the mixtures was 11%–13% in 2019, which almost disappeared from the stand in 2020. At Beaverlodge, fodder Galega maintained 38%–47% in 2019 and increased to 47%–69% in 2020. Fodder Galega had similar acid detergent fiber to cicer milkvetch at two of four sites, which was lower than those of alfalfa and sainfoin. The crude protein of fodder Galega and its mixtures with grasses was lower than other mixtures at the three Saskatchewan sites, but was higher at Beaverlodge. Our results indicate that fodder Galega has potential to be utilized as a forage legume in cooler northern regions, but its productivity was low in the Dark Brown and Brown soil. The trophic relationships between bats (Chiroptera) and Lake Baikal biota have been assessed based on microscopic studies of Myotis petax feces (n = 22). From 82 to 86% of samples had fragments of exoskeletons of caddis flies (Trichoptera) and dipterans (Diptera). These taxa include mainly aquatic and semiaquatic species. Many species from these taxa are endemic to Lake Baikal. Terrestrial insects are found in studied samples less frequently (Hymenoptera 41%, Neuroptera 27%, and Heteroptera 9%). Morphological analysis has revealed fragments of Baikal amphipods in two fecal samples of M. pretax. Further molecular studies will make it possible to detect greater invertebrate taxa diversity in fecal samples of bats feeding near Lake Baikal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural research for development agencies in sub-Saharan Africa increasingly implements innovation platforms (IPs) to address institutional barriers to innovation in smallholder agriculture. This research aims to understand the activities, actions or arrangements that were mediated by a multilevel set of IPs to sustain the use of livestock feeding practices in the Ethiopian Highlands. Data was collected two years after the multilevel IPs had been phased out to ascertain if innovation outcomes had been sustained beyond the life of the project. The study identified specific IP interventions that constrained or enabled sustained use of the livestock innovations among two groups of smallholders based on their livestock production objective, i.e., commercially oriented or subsistence. Where the feed innovations had been tailored to specific enterprises and aligned to farmers' production goals, such as improved dairy farming, they were sustained. Transitioning to a livestock feed system was enabled in the case of commercially oriented smallholders and remained a challenge for subsistence-oriented smallholders, especially where access to forage seeds and affordable input services is limited. Finally mechanisms and strategies to inform similar future interventions to support the development of different groups of farmers along the value chain to achieve impact beyond project period are presented. Agriculture, especially cereals, is important in sustaining economies and food security globally. This study delves into the Moroccan agricultural landscape, specifically focusing on predicting livestock feed sales to assist cereal company producers in optimizing production, streamlining supply chain operations, and enhancing customer satisfaction. Data collected from various markets across Morocco, including sales dates and locations, was combined with climate data and analyzed using advanced machine learning techniques, particularly the gradient boosting regression (GBR) algorithm, which achieved high accuracy with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.0203 and a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.0281. The evaluation of multiple regression models revealed promising results, demonstrating the effectiveness of predictive models in accurately forecasting sales. These findings contribute valuable insights to sales forecasting in the cereal industry by considering weather conditions, production methods, and livestock-related variables, highlighting the importance of leveraging advanced machine learning techniques for optimizing production processes and meeting market demands efficiently in the agribusiness sector. BACKGROUND: Entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) treatment of plants may affect the survival and feeding preferences of herbivorous pests. However, comprehensive studies on the fitness across their entire life cycle, feeding behavior, and physiological changes in herbivores consuming EPF‐treated plants within the tripartite interactions of EPF, plants, and pests are still limited. In this study, we utilized life tables, electrical penetration graph (EPG), and metabolomics to uncover the biological and physiological characteristics of Bemisia tabaci on tomato plants inoculated with Beauveria bassiana through root irrigation. RESULTS: Our study indicated that Beauveria bassiana Bb252 can penetrate the entire tissue from the point of inoculation, primarily colonizing the intercellular spaces and vascular tissue. However, this colonization is temporary, lasting no more than 35 days. Moreover, the population fitness and feeding behavior of Bemisia tabaci on tomato plants treated with Beauveria bassiana via root irrigation were significantly affected, showing a substantial 41.4% decrease in net reproductive rate (R0), a notable reduction in watery salivation, and shortened phloem ingestion. Lastly, we observed a significant decrease in hormones and amino acids of whiteflies that fed on Beauveria bassiana‐treated tomato plants by root irrigation. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicated that the endophyte, Beauveria bassiana Bb252, reduced demographic fitness of Bemisia tabaci by altering its hormones and amino acids levels. Purpose: Simultaneous membrane-based feeding and monitoring of the oxygen transfer rate shall be introduced to the newly established perforated ring flask, which consists of a cylindrical glass flask with an additional perforated inner glass ring, for rapid bioprocess development. Methods: A 3D-printed adapter was constructed to enable monitoring of the oxygen transfer rate in the perforated ring flasks. Escherichia coli experiments in batch were performed to validate the adapter. Fed-batch experiments with different diffusion rates and feed solutions were performed. Results: The adapter and the performed experiments allowed a direct comparison of the perforated ring flasks with Erlenmeyer flasks. In batch cultivations, maximum oxygen transfer capacities of 80 mmol L−1 h−1 were reached with perforated ring flasks, corresponding to a 3.5 times higher capacity than in Erlenmeyer flasks. Fed-batch experiments with a feed reservoir concentration of 500 g glucose L−1 were successfully conducted. Based on the oxygen transfer rate, an ammonium limitation could be observed. By adding 40 g ammonium sulfate L−1 to the feed reservoir, the limitation could be prevented. Conclusion: The membrane-based feeding, an online monitoring technique, and the perforated ring flask were successfully combined and offer a new and promising tool for screening and process development in biotechnology. Although evidence is sporadic it is becoming clear that haymaking and hay meadow management were likely indispensable elements of practices related to animal husbandry during the Roman period. As large towns begin to emerge, success in breeding large livestock such as cattle and horses would have required good quality fodder. Yet, how we distinguish fodder or other animal associated plant remains in the archaeological record can be problematic for many reasons. This paper explores this issue through the context of Roman Mursa, located in modern day Osijek, Croatia. Two pits dating to c. AD133, contained relatively large quantities of grassland and wet ground species, such as Trifolium/Melilotus sp. Prunella vulgaris and the grasses Poa sp. and Phleum sp., as well as chaff and other remains, such as dung, eggshells, and fish scales. By examining the proportion of species grouped into habitat types, we see that the composition of sample SU391 is indictive of hay meadows and could indicate nearby animal stabling in the centre of the early Roman colony. Summary Background Aim Methods Results Conclusion Although dietary emulsifiers are implicated in the pathogenesis of Crohn's disease, their effect has not been studied in humans.To determine the effects of high‐ and low‐emulsifier diets (HED, LED) on intestinal barrier function in healthy subjects in unstressed and acutely stressed states.We conducted a single‐blinded, cross‐over, controlled feeding trial in 22 healthy adults. After recording 7 days of their habitual diet, we randomised participants to HED or LED with ≥3‐week washout between diets. On dietary completion, acute stress was induced via intravenous corticotrophin‐releasing hormone. We assessed dietary adherence, effects on 2‐h urinary lactulose: rhamnose ratio (LRR), serum concentrations of lipopolysaccharide‐binding protein, soluble‐CD14 and markers of epithelial injury and inflammation.Dietary adherence was excellent. In an unstressed state, median (interquartile range) LRR during HED was 0.030 (0.018–0.042); on LED, this was 0.042 (0.029–0.078; p = 0.04). LPB concentrations were lower on HED than LED (p = 0.026), but no differences were observed for epithelial injury or inflammation. Under acute stress, LRR increased by 89% (−1% to 486%) on HED (p = 0.004), differing (p = 0.001) from 39% (1%–90%) decrease on LED (p = 0.009). Soluble‐CD14 also increased (p < 0.001). The LED had a prolonged carry‐over effect on suppressing HED‐induced changes during stress. Similar changes in LRR and soluble‐CD14 were observed when HED was used as the first diet (both p < 0.01).High intake of emulsifiers improved barrier function in the unstressed state, but increased intestinal permeability to stress, without evidence of inflammation. Background: Until recently, breastfeeding has been contraindicated for women living with HIV (WHIV) in the U.S. However, given the numerous health benefits of breastfeeding, recommendations have changed to support parental choice to breastfeed through shared decision-making. Although specific guidelines for managing the care of these women and their infants are not yet available, various approaches have been successful without infants acquiring HIV from their virologically suppressed mothers, thus, establishing breastfeeding as a viable option for the rising number of interested WHIV. This descriptive qualitative study aimed to identify factors influencing infant feeding choices decisions among WHIV in a multiethnic and multicultural population. Methods and findings: A qualitative description design was used. WHIV who had given birth within 6 months were recruited using purposeful sampling. Data were collected using a semistructured interview guide in the participant's preferred language. Content analysis was used, and barriers and facilitators were separated and used to generate the themes and categories. In total, 20 participants were interviewed, and from these interviews, 11 barriers and 14 facilitators that influenced the decision to breastfeed were identified. Major barriers were related to the interference with daily activities, fear of transmission, lack of a standardized approach to education, and maternal concerns. Key facilitators included the benefits and advantages of breastmilk, access to more scientific research information on breastfeeding in the context of HIV, advice from a lactation consultant, emotional connection and attachment with the child, support from family and partners, empowering and supporting autonomy and decision-making about infant feeding, providing feeding choices, access to the lived experiences of women who have successfully breastfed their infants, and collaborative relationship with the physician and other healthcare providers. Conclusion: The study identified barriers and facilitators to breastfeeding among WHIV that may influence their infant feeding decision-making process. Traditional approaches for monitoring aquatic pollution primarily rely on chemical analysis and the detection of pollutants in the aqueous environments. However, these methods lack realism and mechanistic insight and, thus, are increasingly supported by effect‐based methods, which offer sensitive endpoints. In this context, daphnids, a freshwater species used extensively in molecular ecotoxicology, offer fast and noninvasive approaches to assess the impact of pollutants. Among the phenotypic endpoints used, feeding rate is a highly sensitive approach because it provides evidence of physiological alterations even in sublethal concentrations. However, there has been no standardized method for measuring feeding rate in daphnids, and several approaches follow different protocols. There is a diversity among tests employing large volumes, extensive incubation times, and high animal densities, which in turn utilize measurements of algae via fluorescence, radiolabeling, or counting ingested cells. These tests are challenging and laborious and sometimes require cumbersome instrumentation. In the present study, we optimized the conditions of a miniaturized fast, sensitive, and high‐throughput assay to assess the feeding rate based on the ingestion of fluorescent microparticles. The protocol was optimized in neonates in relation to the concentration of microplastic and the number of animals to increase reproducibility. Daphnids, following exposures to nonlethal concentrations, were incubated with microplastics; and, as filter feeders, they ingest microparticles. The new approach revealed differences in the physiology of daphnids in concentrations below the toxicity limits for a range of pollutants of different modes of action, thus proving feeding to be a more sensitive and noninvasive endpoint in pollution assessment. To investigate whether sepsis-induced neuroinflammation of medulla visceral zone (MVZ) predominates the systemic inflammation through cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway (CAP), and to explore the effect of central anti-inflammation on systemic inflammation. 112 adult Sprague–Dawley male rats were randomly divided into sepsis experimental group (n = 56) and neuroinflammation experimental group (n = 56). The two experimental groups were individually randomly divided into control group (n = 8), model group (n = 16), central anti-inflammatory group (n = 16) and vagus transection group (n = 16). Rats in two control groups were administered with saline at the dose of 6 mL/kg intraperitoneally or with 25 μL artificial cerebrospinal fluid injected into forth ventricle once a day for 3 days. Rats in two model groups were administered with Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) at the dose of 6 mg/kg intraperitoneally or with 25 μg/25 μL LPS injected into forth ventricle once a day for 3 days. Rats in two central anti-inflammatory groups were fed with 10 mg/mL minocycline sucrose solution as the only water source for 4 days prior to be treated as the model groups of their own, and feeding style was continued until the end of the experiment. Rats in the two vagus transection groups were undergone right vagotomy and 7 days of adaptive feeding prior to be treated as the same as those in the central anti-inflammatory group of their own. The Murine Sepsis Score (MSS), mortality rate and heat rate variability (HRV) were recorded during the last 3 days of intervention. Then the rats were sacrificed and blood samples were collected for ELISA analysis to detect the serum level of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-10. The expression of TNF-α and IL-6 in medulla oblongata were analyzed by Western blot. The correlation and regression analysis among the expression levels of cytokines in medulla oblongata, HRV indexes and serum inflammatory cytokines were performed. The mortality rate and MSS of the sepsis model group and the MVZ's neuroinflammation model group were significantly higher than those of their own control group, and the central anti-inflammation reduced the mortality rate and MSS scores of the two model groups, while the right vagotomy abolished the effect of central anti-inflammatory. In the sepsis model group and the MVZ's neuroinflammation model group, the levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and other cytokines in serum and MVZ were significantly increased, and HRV indexes (SDNN, RMSSD, LF, HF, LF/HF) were significantly decreased (P = 0.000). Central anti-inflammatory treatment reversed the above changes. However, right vagotomy abolished the central anti-inflammatory effect. Correlation and regression analysis showed that there was a significant linear correlation among the expression of inflammatory factors in MVZ, the indexes of HRV and the levels of serum cytokines. Our study shows that sepsis-induced MVZ's neuroinflammation exert a powerful influence on the systemic inflammation through CAP in sepsis. Central anti-inflammation effectively improves systemic inflammation through inhibiting MVZ's neuroinflammation in sepsis. The time domain and frequency domain indexes of HRV can reflect the regulatory effect of CAP and the degree of inflammation of MVZ, which may be potentially used to monitor the condition and treatment effectiveness of sepsis patients. Background: Palm kernel meal (PKM) is a by-product of oil palm kernel after oil extraction, which is widely used in animal feeds due to its high energy content. This study aimed to investigate the impact of supplementing Tibetan sheep with PKM on their hepatic phenotype, oxidative stress and immune response. A total of 120 Tibetan lambs (Initial weight = 12.37 ± 0.92 kg) were randomly assigned into four groups: control group (C group, 0% PKM diet), low group (L group, 15% PKM diet), middle group (M group, 18% PKM diet), and high group (H group, 21% PKM diet) on a dry matter basis. The feeding experiment was performed for 130 d, including a 10 d adaption period. Results: Results showed that the level of GSH-Px were higher in the H and M groups than in the C and L groups (P < 0.05). The levels of IgM and TNF-α were higher in the M group when compared to those on the C group (P < 0.05). The level of IgA was significantly higher in the M group than in the H group (P < 0.05). Additionally, compared with the others groups, the hepatocytes in the M group displayed a radial arrangement, forming hepatic plates that were centered around the central vein. The transcriptome results revealed that proteasome 26 S subunit, ATPase 3 (PSMC3), proteasome 26 S subunit, ATPase 5 (PSMC5), proteasome 26 S subunit ubiquitin receptor, non-ATPase 4 (PSMD4), proteasome activator subunit 1 (PSME1), acyl-CoA dehydrogenase short/branched chain (ACADSB), enoyl-CoA hydratase, short chain 1 (ECHS1), serine dehydratase (SDS), ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC), and phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) were the hub genes regulating the amino acid metabolism in the liver. Conclusions: In summary, dietary 18% PMK supplementation contributed to improve the hepatic phenotype, oxidative stress and immune response through regulating the expression of related genes. The aim of this study was to develop a feeding protocol for the larviculture of Apistogramma cacatuoides, using the histological approach to larval nutrition conditions. For this, three experiments were carried out. Experiment 1 was carried out in a randomized design to determine the optimal amount of Artemia nauplii (AN) per larva, and three treatments were evaluated: P1—feeding with 25 A. nauplii per larva (AN/L) during the first 5 days, followed by 50 AN/L from the 6th to the 10th day and 100 AN/L from the 11th to the 20th day; P2 and P3—37 and 50 AN/L during the first 5 days, 75 and 100 AN/L from the 6th to the 10th day and 150 and 200 AN/L from the 11th to the 20th day. Experiment 2 was carried out in a randomized design to determine the daily frequency of feeding and evaluated four feeding frequencies: F1—feeding only once a day (09:00); (F2)—feeding twice a day (09:00 and 17:00); F3—feeding three times a day (09:00, 11:30 and 17:00); and F4—feeding four times a day (09:00, 11: 30, 14:00 and 17:00). Experiment 3 lasted 40 days and was conducted in a randomized design to evaluate three periods for the beginning of the feeding transition: WE10:AN for 10 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed until the end of the experimental period; WE15:AN for 15 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed; WE20:AN for 20 days, followed by 3 days of co‐feeding and commercial feed. The results of this study showed that, for the best development of the larvae, they should receive the feeding protocol 50−100−200 AN/L (P3) until the 20th day of exogenous feeding. From the 21st day, the transition to inert food should begin with 3 days of co‐feeding, and feeding during larviculture should be carried out at a frequency of twice a day; this protocol provided a good nutritional status for the larvae, as shown by the histological approach. Wheat bran, the main by-product of dry milling of wheat, is currently mainly used in the animal feed industry, but has attracted attention as a food ingredient owing to its high dietary fiber and phytochemical contents, providing excellent physiological effects. The bran layers (aleurone layer, outer pericarp and intermediate layer) contain different compositions, structures, and nutrients, and have different properties. Each layer, when separated and isolated, potentially could find more extensive applications in foods. This triggered interest in isolating the bran layers using milling and wet- or dry-fractionation techniques based on their chemical or physical properties. The recent progress has allowed the production of commercial products from wheat bran layers, particularly aleurone-rich products, enhancing the value of wheat bran layers and their applications in food. The present review highlights the recent advances in studying the chemical composition including distribution of chemical components, physical structure, biopolymer matrix, and physicochemical properties of each wheat bran layer. Technologies to fractionate wheat bran layers and utilization of different bran layers in foods are discussed and reviewed, providing new strategies for improving the value of wheat bran and utilization of wheat bran in foods. Poor feeding system hygiene may contribute to uncontrolled spontaneous fermentation in liquid pig feed and its associated undesirable effects. This study aimed to determine the effects of an intensive sanitisation programme in a grow-finisher liquid feeding system by monitoring microbiological and physico-chemical parameters of liquid feed and microbial colonisation of the feeding system surfaces. The sanitisation programme involved a combination of physical and chemical cleaning between batches of grow-finisher pigs, combined with nightly rinsing of the system with an organic acid blend. Improved hygiene of the internal surfaces of the mixing tank and feed pipeline, particularly until week 5 post-cleaning, was evidenced by reduced counts of lactic acid bacteria, total aerobes, Enterobacteriaceae, yeasts and moulds and decreased adenosine triphosphate concentrations. Enterobacteriaceae and moulds remained undetectable on pipeline surfaces for 10 weeks. Scanning electron microscopy of the feed pipelines confirmed these findings. Conversely, the impact on liquid feed microbiology was minimal and short-lived. However, acetic acid, ethanol and biogenic amine concentrations decreased in the feed post-cleaning and no gross energy losses were observed. Therefore, by controlling surface microbial communities on liquid feeding systems via implementation of the sanitisation programme developed in the current study, on-farm liquid feed quality should be improved. Feed wastage is one of the major concerns in aquaculture practice. A simple and unique floating fish feeder with drum-type metering mechanism was developed, which addresses this concern. A drum-type metering mechanism is an easy, effective, low cost metering method with low energy requirement. Optimizing the feed rate for any metering systems is a necessary pre-requisite to ensure proper feeding. In this study, the operating parameters of the drum-type feed metering unit have been optimized to achieve the desired feed rate. The influence of three independent parameters (number of metering holes, shaft speed and drum fill level) on the dependent parameter (feed rate) was studied and optimized using response surface methodology. A multilevel full factorial design approach has been adopted for the experimental design. The effect of variation in operating parameters was investigated experimentally and a response surface model was developed from experimental data. The fit of the model was expressed by an R2 value of 0.879. The optimal solutions obtained from the model with high desirability values were further used for validation experiments in aquaculture pond and found to be acceptable. It was observed that low shaft speeds and drum fill levels led to better feeding. The best settings recommended for the feeder operation were 24 metering holes, 31 % drum fill level and 30 rpm shaft speed. The feeder was found to improve feed application and reduce feed wastage. Predators with diverse diets can use generalized feeding behavior to consume different prey types or can alter behavior based upon the functional demands of each prey type. Prey choice and feeding behavior are especially important for limbless, gape‐limited predators, such as snakes, because the head must capture, subdue, and ingest prey. Although previous studies have described how snakes feed on dangerous prey, these studies have not compared how behaviors might vary with different prey types. We analyzed the feeding behavior of ground snakes (Sonora episcopa) that were fed scorpions, spiders, and centipedes. Ground snakes successfully consumed each prey type using different behaviors for each prey. To capture prey, snakes used the unusual behavior of pinning prey with the ventral surface of the head with a closed mouth strike before biting. Snakes grasped and envenomated scorpions in all trials, and this behavior lasted significantly longer for scorpions than for spiders. During envenomation, snakes used their body to pin the telson of the scorpion to reduce the likelihood of being stung. Rather than using body restraint to subdue spiders, the snakes often dragged spiders across the substrate with the mandible. Scorpions repeatedly pinched and stung snakes during feeding and snakes used body restraint to subdue this prey significantly more often than spiders. Our study revealed that ground snakes alter feeding behavior based upon prey defenses and use novel prey capture and handling behaviors to subdue prey, suggesting there is yet unappreciated diversity of feeding behavior in snakes allowing them to exploit dangerous arthropod prey. Macronutrients play a vital role in host immunity and can influence host–pathogen dynamics, potentially through dietary effects on gut microbiota. To increase our understanding of how dietary macronutrients affect physiology and gut microbiota and investigate whether feeding behaviour is influenced by an immune threat, we conducted two experiments. First, we determined whether zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) exhibit shifts in physiology and gut microbiota when fed diets differing in macronutrient ratios. We found the type and amount of diet consumed affected gut microbiota alpha diversity, where microbial richness and Shannon diversity increased with caloric intake in birds fed a high‐fat diet and decreased with caloric intake in birds fed a high protein diet. Diet macronutrient content did not affect physiological metrics, but lower caloric intake was associated with higher complement activity. In our second experiment, we simulated an infection in birds using the bacterial endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and quantified feeding behaviour in immune challenged and control individuals, as well as birds housed near either a control pair (no immune threat), or birds housed near a pair given an immune challenge with LPS (social cue of heightened infection risk). We also examined whether social cues of infection alter physiological responses relevant to responding to an immune threat, an effect that could be mediated through shifts in feeding behaviour. LPS induced a reduction in caloric intake driven by a decrease in protein, but not fat consumption. No evidence was found for socially induced shifts in feeding behaviour, physiology or gut microbiota. Enrichment of maize fodder with iron (Fe) is gaining importance, as Fe deficient fodders grown on light textured. A two-year field investigation was undertaken to enrich the Fe content in fodder maize through biofortification. Replicated experiment was conducted in calcareous soil with Fe content of 5.60 mg kg−1. The treatments consisted of foliar spray of 0.5 and 1.0% iron sulfate (FeSO4) which were done with internal of at 30, 45 days after sowing (DAS) respectively with control treatment. The results of investigation revealed that the foliar spray of Fe @ 1.0% FeSO4 at 30 and 45 days (T7) showed significant effect on the growth parameters viz. plant height, leaf area index, green fodder, dry matter yield and Fe uptake through biofortification. The final results showed that the fodder maize which recorded maximum Fe uptake (enrichment) to the tune of 4.17 and 2.76 kg ha−1 in seasons I and II, respectively with Fe @ 1.0% FeSO4 at 30 and 45 days (T7) followed by Fe @ 0.5% FeSO4 at 30 and 45 days (T4) with Fe uptake as 3.90 and 2.44 kg ha−1 in seasons I and II, respectively. Our results reported that under treatment with 1.0% foliar FeSO4 at 45 days after sowing (T7), the green fodder yield was obtained as 56.20 and 52.13 tonnes ha−1 in season I and II respectively. Application of foliar spray of FeSO4 (T7) is important for significantly enhancing Fe uptake and yield of fodder maize which would lead to improved animal health and production. Ruminant feed is a major problem for the livestock sector in West African developing countries causing animal nutritional diseases, reducing ruminant production, and creating a massive ecological crisis through greenhouse gas emissions. Alternative feeds, which include agro-industrial by-products, fodder trees, crop residues, insects, fodder legumes, algae, and pulses, constitute enormous feed resources for livestock in Africa. This study was conducted in accordance with the methodological recommendations of PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). We conducted a literature search using Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus to identify documents related to alternative ruminant feeds using the following keywords: alternative feeds, ruminant products, environmental impacts, and West Africa. Those that met the inclusion criteria were included, resulting in 44 articles published between 2013 and 2023. These studies included 45 alternative feeds divided into six groups, including agro-industrial by-products (48.89%), followed by fodder trees (17.78%), crop residues (13.33%), insects (8.89%), fodder legumes (6.67%) and seaweeds (4.44%). Our results revealed that alternative feed resources and their effects on ruminant's performances and environment are poorly known in West Africa, which limits their inclusion in rations and sometimes leads to their misuse. The recent chromosome-based genome assembly and the newly developed 70K single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array for American mink (Neogale vison) facilitate the identification of genetic variants underlying complex traits in this species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between consensus runs of homozygosity (ROH) with growth and feed efficiency traits in American mink. A subsample of two mink populations (n = 2,986) were genotyped using the Affymetrix Mink 70K SNP array. The identified ROH segments were included simultaneously, concatenated into consensus regions, and the ROH-based association studies were carried out with linear mixed models considering a genomic relationship matrix for 11 growth and feed efficiency traits implemented in ASReml-R version 4. In total, 298,313 ROH were identified across all individuals, with an average length and coverage of 4.16 Mb and 414.8 Mb, respectively. After merging ROH segments, 196 consensus ROH regions were detected and used for genome-wide ROH-based association analysis. Thirteen consensus ROH regions were significantly (P < 0.01) associated with growth and feed efficiency traits. Several candidate genes within the significant regions are known for their involvement in growth and body size development, including MEF2A, ADAMTS17, POU3F2, and TYRO3. In addition, we found ten consensus ROH regions, defined as ROH islands, with frequencies over 80% of the population. These islands harbored 12 annotated genes, some of which were related to immune system processes such as DTX3L, PARP9, PARP14, CD86, and HCLS1. This is the first study to explore the associations between homozygous regions with growth and feed efficiency traits in American mink. Our findings shed the light on the effects of homozygosity in the mink genome on growth and feed efficiency traits, that can be utilized in developing a sustainable breeding program for mink. Background: Stress during pregnancy can lead to adverse maternal and infant health outcomes through epigenetic changes in the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis. Among farmers in low-income countries, one important stressor is food insecurity, which can be reduced using hermetic storage bags. This study aimed to determine, for the first time, whether a hermetic storage bag intervention during pregnancy positively affects maternal and infant DNA methylation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis-related genes FKBP5 and NR3C1. We further analyzed whether anthropometrics, stress, and mental health were associated with DNA methylation. Methods: This study was part of a larger matched-pair randomized controlled trial focusing on the impact of improved on-farm storage on food security, poverty, and net income of smallholder farming households. A total of N = 149 mothers were recruited by telephone and invited to attend a study appointment at health facilities in Kakamega County, Western Kenya, with their infants in April or May 2021. During the appointment, anthropometric measurements were taken, questionnaires on stress and mental health were administered, and saliva samples were collected. Logistic and multiple linear regression were used to examine the effect of the intervention and related measures on DNA methylation. Results: Mothers in the intervention group showed higher mean NR3C1 methylation levels than those in the control group, corrected for multiple testing. Maternal postpartum body mass index was positively associated with infant NR3C1 CpG3 DNA methylation. The more stressful life events a mother had experienced in the previous 12 months (including during pregnancy), the lower her FKBP5 CpG3 methylation levels. Conclusions: Food insecurity and stressful life events during pregnancy seem to exert significant effects on maternal DNA methylation. While these stressors did not appear to impact infant DNA methylation in the present study, maternal postpartum body mass index was significantly related to infant methylation. These findings suggest that while infants may be protected from excessive maternal glucocorticoids by placental barrier activity, maternal metabolic status is still reflected in their epigenetic make-up. Background: Bed bugs, Cimex lectularius, form day-time aggregations from which they depart at night to feed on human blood. Obtaining an initial blood meal is a critical step in the development of first instars. Previous research had shown that first instars had greater success in obtaining this essential meal when in the presence of adults than when they were alone. Methods: Feeding by bed bugs was tested in upright vertical cylindrical chambers fitted with a paper ramp to aid in climbing toward a blood feeder suspended across the upper end of the cylinder. Feeding success by the first instars was tested when they were alone in the chamber or when they were in the presence of adult females, males, or both together. Results: The mean proportions of the first instars that fed were significantly higher when they were confined with adults of both sexes or adult females than when they were confined alone or with males. Feeding by adult males was also enhanced by confinement with females. When first instars and adult females were confined together, the mean duration before first instars began feeding was longer than for females. There was no difference in feeding success by first instars confined with their mothers or nonmothers. Conclusions: Elevated feeding by first instars and adult males in the presence of females may be adaptive traits that enhance fitness. First instars must feed to avoid dehydration and starvation and to obtain resources needed for development. Adult males would benefit not only by increased feeding success but also by greater likelihood of finding a recently engorged female with which to mate. Intermediate wheatgrass [IWG; Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & D.R. Dewey] is a perennial grass, dual‐purpose crop that can provide environmental services. In addition to the grain production, assessing its forage potential is crucial. We developed models for near‐infrared (NIR) spectrometry prediction of the chemical composition and digestibility of IWG across various experimental sites. Among these, a Belgian field was used to compare its dual production in pure stands or in mixture with legumes. Good quality NIR predictions were observed, offering an efficient tool to characterize the forage composition of IWG. Its forage parameters were mainly influenced by the phenological stage with an increase of fiber and a decrease of protein, digestibility, and energy content (NEL) during the growing season. IWG forage at vegetative stages could be used to feed lactating dairy cattle with a NEL of 1625 kcal kg−1 of DM but, its biomass was low averaging 1.8 t of DM ha−1. At grain maturity, biomass was higher (i.e., 5.3 t of DM ha−1), representing 73%–92% of the total biomass production, and could replace straw in high‐starch dairy diets with a NEL averaging 849 kcal kg−1 of DM. Although the mixture of IWG with legumes enhanced some forage parameters, its value as animal feed was not improved. In mixture, we observed a tradeoff between the increase of the forage yield and the reproductive potential of IWG. Background and Aim: The phytogenic cocktail (PC) is a unique combination of natural plant extracts consisting of coconut shell smoke, clove leaf extract, and mangosteen rind extract, predominantly containing phenol, eugenol, and α-mangostin. Chicken performance can be improved by its antibacterial properties. This study aimed to test PC as a replacement for antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs), assessing its impact on performance, intestinal microbes, and carcass traits in slow growth KUB chickens. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and forty KUB chicks were distributed randomly to five dietary groups. Each group constituted six replicates, one replicate contained eight chicks. The treatments included the control diet (CD) with no additives, CD with 50 ppm Zinc bacitracin as an additive (AGPs), CD paired with 198 mL PC/ton feed provided for the initial 12 weeks (PC1), CD with 198 mL PC/ton feed given for the first 4 weeks (PC2), and CD supplied with 198 mL PC/ton feed for the first 8 weeks (PC3). Performance and mortality indicators were assessed during the feeding stage up to 12 weeks of age, while intestinal total microbial count and carcass characteristics were determined at 12 weeks. Duncan's multiple-range test identified differences among the treatments in the randomized experiment. Results: The AGPs group weighed significantly more (p < 0.05) than PC2 but not significantly different (p > 0.05) from Control, PC1, and PC3 at 4 weeks. At 8 weeks, there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in the body weight (BW) between the AGP, CD, and PC groups. The AGPs group had a significantly greater BW than PC1 and PC2 at 12 weeks (p < 0.05), but was comparable to CD and PC3 (p > 0.05). During the starter phase (0-4 weeks), dietary addition of AGPs or PCs significantly reduced feed intake (p < 0.05); however, no significant effect (p > 0.05) was observed during the later feeding periods (0-8 or 0-12 weeks). During the starter period, PC3 yielded the best feed conversion ratio, slightly surpassing AGPs and significantly (p < 0.05) outperforming CD. No significant variations (p > 0.05) were detected in the carcasses among the treatments. The reduction of abdominal fat relative weight was significant (p < 0.05) during the first 8 weeks of PC feeding. After the 12-week trial, no significant difference (p > 0.05) was observed in the proportionate weights of the crop, proventriculus, gizzard, pancreas, cecum, spleen, bursa of Fabricius, heart, and liver. The reduction in the intestinal microbe population due to AGPs or PC was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). About 100% viability was confirmed by the absence of mortality throughout the study. Conclusion: PC supplementation in KUB chicken feed enhances their performance. The optimal feeding regimes were effective during the first 8 weeks of age. In the 0-4 week time frame, feeding the PC to the chicken worsened performance whereas no improvement was observed in the 0-12 week period. The application enhanced weight loss, feed efficiency, and reduced abdominal fat. Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of liquid l‐lysine base produced with a genetically modified strain of Corynebacterium glutamicum as a nutritional feed additive for all animal species. The l‐lysine base liquid produced with C. glutamicum NRRL B‐67535 and NRRL B‐67439 is currently authorised as a nutritional additive for all animal species. The present application is aimed at modifying the current authorisation to include C. glutamicum NRRL B‐68248 as a production strain. The new production strain qualifies for the qualified presumption of safety approach when used for production purposes. It was unambiguously identified as C. glutamicum and was shown not to harbour acquired antimicrobial resistance determinants for antibiotics of human and veterinary importance. All the introduced sequences or mutations were considered to be safe, and no viable cells or DNA of the NRRL B‐68248 strain was detected in the final product. Therefore, the final product does not pose any safety concern associated with the production strain. l‐Lysine base produced using C. glutamicum NRRL B‐68248 does not represent a risk for the target species, the consumer or the environment. The additive was considered to be neither irritant to skin or the eyes, nor a dermal sensitiser. l‐Lysine base produced with C. glutamicum NRRL B‐68248 is considered to be an efficacious source of the essential amino acid l‐lysine for non‐ruminant animal species. Following a request from the European Commission, EFSA was asked to deliver a scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of an essential oil obtained from the fruit of Apium graveolens L. (celery seed oil), when used as a sensory additive in feed and water for drinking for all animal species. The EFSA Panel on Additives and Products or Substances used in Animal Feed (FEEDAP) Panel concluded that the use of celery seed oil is of no concern up to the following concentrations in complete feed: 1.6 mg/kg for chickens for fattening, 2.3 mg/kg for laying hens, 2.1 mg/kg for turkeys for fattening, 2.8 mg/kg for piglets, 3.3 mg/kg for pigs for fattening, 4.1 mg/kg for sows, 6.5 mg/kg for veal calves (milk replacer), 6.2 mg/kg for cattle for fattening, sheep, goats and horses, 4.0 mg/kg for dairy cows, 2.5 mg/kg for rabbits, 6.8 mg/kg for salmonids and 7.2 mg/kg for dogs. These conclusions were extrapolated to other physiologically related species. For cats, ornamental fish and other species, no conclusion can be drawn. The use of celery seed oil in animals feed is not expected to pose concern for the consumers and for the environment. The additive under assessment should be considered as an irritant to skin and eyes, and as a respiratory and skin sensitiser. When handling the essential oil, exposure of unprotected users to perillaldehyde and bergapten may occur. Therefore, to reduce the risk, the exposure of the users should be minimised. Since A. graveolens and its preparations were recognised to flavour food and its function in feed would be essentially the same as that in food, no further demonstration of efficacy was considered necessary.
