Mammalian somatic cells are generally unstable in the haploid state, resulting in haploid-to-diploid conversion within a short time frame. However, cellular and molecular principles that limit the sustainability of somatic haploidy remain unknown. In this study, we found the haploidy-linked vulnerability to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress as a critical cause of haploid intolerance in human somatic cells. Pharmacological induction of ER stress selectively induced apoptosis in haploid cells, facilitating the replacement of haploids by coexisting diploidized cells in a caspase-dependent manner. Biochemical analyses revealed that unfolded protein response (UPR) was activated with similar dynamics between haploids and diploids upon ER stress induction. However, haploids were less efficient in solving proteotoxic stress, resulting in a bias toward a proapoptotic mode of UPR signaling. Artificial replenishment of chaperone function substantially alleviated the haploidy-linked upregulation of proapoptotic signaling and improved haploid cell retention under tunicamycin-induced ER stress. These data demonstrate that the ER stress-driven haploid instability stems from inefficient proteostatic control that alters the functionality of UPR to cause apoptosis selectively in haploids. Interestingly, haploids suffered a higher level of protein aggregation even in unperturbed conditions, and the long-term stability of the haploid state was significantly improved by alleviating their natural proteotoxicity. Based on these results, we propose that the haploidy-specific vulnerability to ER stress creates a fundamental cause of haploid intolerance in mammalian somatic cells. Throughout development, complex networks of cell signaling pathways drive cellular decision-making across different tissues and contexts. The transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) pathways, including the BMP/Smad pathway, play crucial roles in determining cellular responses. However, as the Smad pathway is used reiteratively throughout the life cycle of all animals, its systems-level behavior varies from one context to another, despite the pathway connectivity remaining nearly constant. For instance, some cellular systems require a rapid response, while others require high noise filtering. In this paper, we examine how the BMP-Smad pathway balances trade-offs among three such systems-level behaviors, or "Performance Objectives (POs)": response speed, noise amplification, and the sensitivity of pathway output to receptor input. Using a Smad pathway model fit to human cell data, we show that varying non-conserved parameters (NCPs) such as protein concentrations, the Smad pathway can be tuned to emphasize any of the three POs and that the concentration of nuclear phosphatase has the greatest effect on tuning the POs. However, due to competition among the POs, the pathway cannot simultaneously optimize all three, but at best must balance trade-offs among the POs. We applied the multi-objective optimization concept of the Pareto Front, a widely used concept in economics to identify optimal trade-offs among various requirements. We show that the BMP pathway efficiently balances competing POs across species and is largely Pareto optimal. Our findings reveal that varying the concentration of NCPs allows the Smad signaling pathway to generate a diverse range of POs. Simple Summary: In Europe, the protozoan parasite Leishmania infantum is transmitted by sandflies. A recent study found that sheep had antibodies against this parasite, triggering questions about the role of these animals in the life cycle. Therefore, blood samples from sheep and goats from two southern German states, Baden-Wuerttemberg (BW) and Bavaria (BAV), were tested for antibodies using a method called ELISA. Details, such as the species, sex and age, were recorded to assess any association between seropositivity and these animal characteristics. A total of seven sheep flocks from BW and seven from BAV were included, comprising 274 sheep and 10 goats in BW, and 277 sheep and 78 goats in BAV. In BW, four sheep from three flocks had antibodies, and in BAV, the same number of sheep tested positive but from four different flocks. Overall, 1.45% of sheep had antibodies against L. infantum, while all goats tested negative. No significant links were found between the presence of antibodies and the factors examined. Our study shows that sheep in areas not typically associated with Leishmania can still be exposed to it. Further research is needed to determine if sheep could help us identify new areas where sandflies live and where the disease could spread. In Europe, Leishmania infantum is the most prevalent Leishmania species, and this protozoan is transmitted by phlebotomine sandflies. A recent publication has shown that sheep harbor L. infantum antibodies. This raises questions about the epidemiological role of small ruminants. Therefore, sera from small ruminants located in two southern German federal states, Baden-Wuerttemberg (BW) and Bavaria (BAV), were analyzed with an ELISA to determine the presence of L. infantum antibodies. The species, sex and age (gimmer vs. ewe) were recorded, and a univariate analysis was conducted to determine possible associations. In total, seven sheep flocks (274 sheep/10 goats) from BW and seven sheep flocks (277 sheep/78 goats) from BAV were examined. In BW, four sheep from three flocks tested positive for L. infantum antibodies. In BAV, the same number of positive sheep were detected but in four flocks. The total seropositivity rate in sheep was 1.45%. All goats tested negative. No significant association (p > 0.05) was detected between Leishmania seropositivity and the variables evaluated. Our study reveals the exposure of sheep to L. infantum in a non-endemic area. Phoronids, together with brachiopods and bryozoans, form the animal clade Lophophorata. Modern lophophorates are quite diverse—some can biomineralize while others are soft‐bodied, they could be either solitary or colonial, and they develop through various eccentric larval stages that undergo different types of metamorphoses. The diversity of this clade is further enriched by numerous extinct fossil lineages with their own distinct body plans and life histories. In this review, I discuss how data on phoronid development, genetics, and morphology can inform our understanding of lophophorate evolution. The actinotrocha larvae of phoronids is a well documented example of intercalation of the new larval body plan, which can be used to study how new life stages emerge in animals with biphasic life cycle. The genomic and embryonic data from phoronids, in concert with studies of the fossil lophophorates, allow the more precise reconstruction of the evolution of lophophorate biomineralization. Finally, the regenerative and asexual abilities of phoronids can shed new light on the evolution of coloniality in lophophorates. As evident from those examples, Phoronida occupies a central role in the discussion of the evolution of lophophorate body plans and life histories. Many animals undergo indirect development, where their embryogenesis produces an intermediate life stage, or larva, that is often free‐living and later metamorphoses into an adult. As their adult counterparts, larvae can have unique and diverse morphologies and occupy various ecological niches. Given their broad phylogenetic distribution, larvae have been central to hypotheses about animal evolution. However, the evolution of these intermediate forms and the developmental mechanisms diversifying animal life cycles are still debated. This review focuses on Spiralia, a large and diverse clade of bilaterally symmetrical animals with a fascinating array of larval forms, most notably the archetypical trochophore larva. We explore how classic research and modern advances have improved our understanding of spiralian larvae, their development, and evolution. Specifically, we examine three morphological features of spiralian larvae: the anterior neural system, the ciliary bands, and the posterior hyposphere. The combination of molecular and developmental evidence with modern high‐throughput techniques, such as comparative genomics, single‐cell transcriptomics, and epigenomics, is a promising strategy that will lead to new testable hypotheses about the mechanisms behind the evolution of larvae and life cycles in Spiralia and animals in general. We predict that the increasing number of available genomes for Spiralia and the optimization of genome‐wide and single‐cell approaches will unlock the study of many emerging spiralian taxa, transforming our views of the evolution of this animal group and their larvae. This study focuses on the development and feasibility testing of contextual-based visual pop-up book media for teaching science, specifically the animal life cycle material, in grade IV at SDN Dukuh 08 Pagi. The pop-up book media is designed to address the lack of student understanding of the material delivered through conventional teaching methods. The research method used is Research and Development (RnD) with the 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). Validation results from media experts show a feasibility percentage of 99%, and validation from subject matter experts shows a percentage of 98%. The implementation of this media in both small and large groups indicates that the pop-up book is highly suitable for use in teaching, with positive responses from students. Simple Summary: Environmental enrichment for pigs in the pre-slaughter room aims to provide a more comfortable and stimulating environment for the animals during the period before slaughter. This can help reduce the stress of transport and improve pig welfare, which can also have positive impacts on reducing the number of animal injuries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of environmental enrichment and lairage of pigs in the slaughterhouse on behavioral responses and number of skin lesions. The main results proved that environmental enrichment did not influence skin lesion score or behavioral responses, while the lairage time at slaughter did not influence the number of lesions on the animals. We concluded that environmental enrichment during lairage in a commercial slaughterhouse did not significantly reduce skin lesions or influence the behavior of pigs; that is, the use of simple metal chains as environmental enrichment is not efficient in improving animal welfare in slaughterhouses. Different resources, such as environmental enrichment, are being evaluated in order to minimize animal stress and promote better conditions during the life cycle of animals, as consumers are increasingly concerned about animal welfare issues. Lairage represents an important stage in the swine production chain and is directly related to animal welfare. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of lairage time in the slaughterhouse and environmental enrichment on the level of skin lesions and behavioral responses in pigs. A total of 648 finishing pigs of both sexes were assessed before and after lairage at the slaughterhouse with a five-point scale (0 = none, to 4 = ≥16 superficial lesions or >10 deep lesions). After lairage (after slaughter), lesions were also classified according to their source (mounting, fighting, and handling). Pigs were distributed into two treatments groups during lairage: with environmental enrichment (EE) on the pen, with hanging metal chains, and with no enrichment (NE). Behavior was monitored during the first four hours of lairage. Proportional odds, mixed linear model for longitudinal data, and non-parametric Wilcoxon signed rank tests were used to analyze the relation between treatments, skin lesions, and behavior. The simple metal chains did not affect skin lesion score or pigs' behavior (p > 0.05), whereas lairage duration influenced standing (SA), sitting (S), lying (L), idleness (I), and drinking water (D) (p < 0.001). The main source of skin lesions was handling, which did not differ between treatments (EE and NE) (p > 0.05). It was observed that the severity of the lesions (highest scores of 3, 4, and 5) increased in the different anatomical regions of the pigs when compared before and after slaughter, with the exception of the frontal area, which was the same (p = 0.7547). Lairage time has a proportional relation with skin lesions, and hanging chains at the slaughterhouse pens was not enough to reduce the number of lesions and to change pig behavior. Identifying the most important factors affecting population growth in animal life cycles is an important tool of species conservation. Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus), an annual fish endemic to the San Francisco Estuary in California (USA), has been provided legal protection since 1993 but 30 years later exists in a conservation‐reliant state on the brink of extinction. Despite considerable controversies about what factors are most responsible for the species' decline, no population growth rate sensitivity comparisons between the most important factors regulating growth have been done. Nor has anyone attempted to quantitatively identify habitat conditions needed to support positive population growth. We developed a set of stage‐structured population models to link habitat indices regulating recruitment of new generations of fish as they metamorphosed into juveniles and the subsequent survival of those fish over several seasons until they reached adulthood. These models are used to quantify drivers of growth rate variation over 30 years. Several complimentary sensitivity analyses indicated freshwater outflow to the estuary during summer had the largest potential to change population growth. Multiple habitat metrics (e.g., food availability, temperature) influencing recruitment and life stage specific survival rates across different seasons interacted in nonlinear ways to determine habitat conditions and water management targets associated with positive population growth. We discuss the implications for freshwater management, Delta Smelt conservation, and the challenges climate change poses for co‐implementation of these two societal priorities. Angiostrongylus costaricensis is a metastrongyloid nematode that primarily infects themesenteric arteries of wild rodents. This parasite is endemic in several regions of the American continent, and in humans, causes a disease known as abdominal angiostrongyliasis. Despite the important health implications of this nematode, there are limited studies investigating the involvement of wild animals in its life cycle. In this study, we present the clinical manifestations, pathologic findings, and molecular diagnosis, to the best of our current knowledge, of the first documented onset of cerebral angiostrongyliasis because of A. costaricensis infection in a juvenile free-ranging opossum (Didelphis marsupialis). Histopathological findings stress the presence of eosinophilic meningoencephalitis with nematodes present within the lesions, and PCR was positive for cox1 and ITS1 reactions. The obtained sequences for a 279 bp fragment of ITS1 were 100% identical to A. costaricensis from Costa Rica. This case highlights the substantial difficulties in diagnosing neuroangiostrongyliasis, yet underscores the importance of considering A. costaricensis as a potential culprit behind neurological conditions in wild marsupials. Larvae represent a distinct life history stage in which animal morphology and behavior contrast strongly to adult organisms. This life history stage is a ubiquitous aspect of animal life cycles, particularly in the marine environment. In many species, the structure and function of the nervous system differ significantly between metamorphosed juveniles and larvae. However, the distribution and diversity of neural cell types in larval nervous systems remains incompletely known. Here, the expression of neurotransmitter and neuropeptide synthesis and transport genes in the bat star Patiria miniata is examined throughout larval development. This characterization of nervous system structure reveals three main neural regions with distinct but overlapping territories. These regions include a densely innervated anterior region, an enteric neural plexus, and neurons associated with the ciliary band. In the ciliary band, cholinergic cells are pervasive while dopaminergic, noradrenergic, and GABAergic cells show regional differences in their localization patterns. Furthermore, the distribution of some neural subtypes changes throughout larval development, suggesting that changes in nervous system structure align with shifting ecological priorities during different larval stages, before the development of the adult nervous system. While past work has described aspects of P. miniata larval nervous system structure, largely focusing on early developmental timepoints, this work provides a comprehensive description of neural cell type localization throughout the extensive larval period. This study aimed to assess the environmental impact (cradle-to-farm gate LCA) of milk production of cereal-based dairy farms in northern Italy and to analyse which traits related to farm management (MAN_F), lactating cows' ration composition (DIET_F), and animal responses (ANI_F) could be identified as main determinants to address specific mitigation strategies. Data originated from 28 dairy farms. The functional unit was 1 kg of fat- and protein-corrected milk (FPCM). Impact categories were global warming (GWP), acidification (AP) and eutrophication (EP) potentials and land occupation (LO). Impact values were analysed with a linear model to test separately the effects of MAN_F, DIET_F and ANI_F variables. One kg FPCM was associated with an average impact of 1.10 kg CO2-eq (GWP), 17.1 g SO2-eq (AP), 6.0 g PO4-eq (EP), and 1.3 m2/y (LO). Regarding MAN_F, GWP and LO linearly decreased with increasing values of stocking rate and feed self-sufficiency (FSS), whereas minimum EP was found for intermediate FSS values (50% DM). Regarding DIET_F, GWP linearly decreased at increasing levels of dietary inclusion of cereal silages, whereas AP and EP linearly decreased at decreasing dietary crude protein (CP) content values. Among ANI_F, GWP and EP were quadratically associated with milk yield (MY), evidencing the lowest values at intermediate MY (9100 ± 477 kg FPCM/cow per 305d-lactation). The GWP, AP and EP decreased with decreasing age at first calving. These results can contribute at drawing good practices for farmers and consultants to promote more environmentally sustainable dairy production while supporting farm functioning and farmers' income. Phenological indicators (PI) are used to study changes to animal and plant behavior in response to seasonal cycles, and they can be useful to quantify the potential impacts of climate change on ecosystems. Here, multiple global climate models and emission scenarios are used to drive dynamically downscaled simulations using the WRF Model over the contiguous United States (CONUS). The wintertime dormancy of plants [chilling units (CU)], timing of spring onset [extended spring indices (SI)], and frequency of proceeding false springs are calculated from regional climate simulations covering historical (1995-2005) and future periods (2025-2100). Southern parts of the CONUS show projected CU decreases (inhibiting some plants from flowering or fruiting), while the northern CONUS experiences an increase (possibly causing plants to break dormancy too early, becoming vulnerable to disease or freezing). Spring advancement (earlier SI dates) is projected, with decadal trends ranging from approximately 1-4 days per decade over the CONUS, comparable to or exceeding those found in observational studies. Projected changes in risk of false spring (hard freezes following spring onset) vary across members of the ensemble and regions of the CONUS, but generally western parts of the CONUS are projected to experience increased risk of false springs. These projected changes to PI connote significant effects on cycles of plants, animals, and ecosystems, highlighting the importance of examining temperature changes during transitional seasons. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: This study examines how phenological indicators, which track the life cycles of plants and animals, could change from 2025 to 2100 as simulated in a regional climate model over the contiguous United States. Chilling units quantify the presence of cooler weather that can benefit plants prior to their growing season. They are projected to decrease in the southern United States, possibly inhibiting agricultural production. Spring onset is projected to occur earlier in the year, advancing by 1-4 days on average over each future decade. Risk of false springs (damaging hard freezes after spring onset) increases in the western United States. Background: The biofouling marine tube worm, Hydroides elegans, is an indirect developing polychaete with significance as a model organism for questions in developmental biology and the evolution of host‐microbe interactions. However, a complete description of the life cycle from fertilization through sexual maturity remains scattered in the literature, and lacks standardization. Results and discussion: Here, we present a unified staging scheme synthesizing the major morphological changes that occur during the entire life cycle of the animal. These data represent a complete record of the life cycle, and serve as a foundation for connecting molecular changes with morphology. Conclusions: The present synthesis and associated staging scheme are especially timely as this system gains traction within research communities. Characterizing the Hydroides life cycle is essential for investigating the molecular mechanisms that drive major developmental transitions, like metamorphosis, in response to bacteria. Key Findings: We have composed a staging scheme that summarizes the entire life cycle of Hydroides elegans. This includes early development, gastrulation, larval phases, metamorphosis, and post‐settlement maturation. Coalescing these periods in development into this staging scheme will further propel Hydroides forward as an important developmental model for the investigation of bacteria‐stimulated metamorphosis, among other exciting future prospects. DNA in sperm is packed with small, charged proteins termed SNBPs (sperm nuclear basic proteins), including mammalian and Drosophila protamines. During spermiogenesis, somatictype chromatin is taken apart and replaced with sperm chromatin in a multistep process leading to an extraordinary condensation of the genome. During fertilization, the ova face a similarly challenging task of SNBP eviction and reassembly of nucleosome-based chromatin. Despite its importance for the animal life cycle, sperm chromatin metabolism, including the biochemical machinery mediating the mutual replacement of histones and SNBPs, remains poorly studied. In Drosophila, Mst77F is one of the first SNBPs loaded into the spermatid nuclei. It persists in mature spermatozoa and is essential for sperm compaction and male fertility. Here, by using in vitro biochemical assays, we identify chaperones that can mediate the eviction and loading of Mst77F on DNA, thus facilitating the interconversions of chromatin forms in the male gamete. Unlike NAP1 and TAP/p32 chaperones that disassemble Mst77F-DNA complexes, ARTEMIS and APOLLO, orthologs of mammalian importin-4 (IPO4), mediate the deposition of Mst77F on DNA or oligonucleosome templates, accompanied by the dissociation of histone-DNA complexes. In vivo, a mutation of testis-specific Apollo brings about a defect of Mst77F loading, abnormal sperm morphology, and male infertility. We identify IPO4 ortholog APOLLO as a critical component of sperm chromatin assembly apparatus in Drosophila. The pursuit of hares with greyhounds (known as "coursing") is a very common hunting practice in the villages of the Guadalquivir Valley, Andalusia (Spain) and is strongly rooted in the history of the area. This kind of hunting provides an intersubjective/interspecies context that hints at the ambivalence of animality as a category. By applying a phenomenological perspective, and through the development of ethnographic research, we study the relationships between greyhounds, hares, and hunters, with the aim of showing that animality cannot be understood as a closed category. Animality emerges in the context of human–animal interactions, and within these, attributes and capacities are attributed to greyhounds or hares that are conventionally only acknowledged in humans. In addition, these attributes change throughout the animals' life cycle. Consequently, we propose the notion of "fluid animality," as something changing and flexible that blurs the radical separation between the human and the animal assumed by Western naturalism. We believe that approaching animality by studying multispecies practices and interactions offers a more appropriate analytical perspective when seeking to understand human–animal relations and their complexity in the Western world. The inevitability of age-related degeneration makes research on degradation mitigation attractive to humans, while exercise is considered an effective means due to its powerful impact on life and health. Caenorhabditis elegans is a model animal with a short life cycle and is widely used in health and aging studies. In this work, ultrasonic stimuli in the form of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) were used to induce behavioral activities in worms. As the worms grew, ultrasound-elicited behavioral responses started to decrease in the early adulthood stage. However, this situation was significantly ameliorated when ultrasonic training sessions at an effective acoustic pressure of 1.1 MPa were performed four times per day for 5 or 7 days, while ultrasonic responses in trained nematodes were stronger than those in untrained ones. These results suggest that long-term ultrasonic training might positively intervene in aging-related degeneration. Besides, it was found that exercise driven by long-term ultrasonic training had insignificant effects on the lifespan of worms. A preliminary exploration of the neural mechanisms underlying the sensation of SAWs was also conducted. The results show that, apart from touch receptor neurons (TRNs), polymodal nociceptors FLP and PVD neurons may also be involved in the perception of ultrasound in C. elegans. Aim: Despite an increasing number of studies highlighting the impacts of climate change on boreal species, the main factors that will drive changes in species assemblages remain ambiguous. We study how species community composition would change following anthropogenic and natural disturbances. We determine the main drivers of assemblage dissimilarity for bird and beetle communities. Location: Côte‐Nord, Québec, Canada. Methods: We quantify two climate‐induced pathways based on direct and indirect effects on species occurrence under different forest harvest management scenarios. The direct climate effects illustrate the impact of climate variables while the indirect effects are reflected through habitat‐based climate change. We develop empirical models to predict the distribution of 127 and 108 species under climate‐habitat and habitat‐only models, respectively, over the next century. We analyse the regional and the latitudinal species assemblage dissimilarity by decomposing it into balanced variation in species occupancy and occurrence and occupancy and occurrence gradient. Results: Both pathways increased dissimilarity in species assemblage. At the regional scale, both effects have an impact on decreasing the number of winning species. Yet, responses are much larger in magnitude under mixed climate effects. Regional assemblage dissimilarity reached 0.77 and 0.69 under mixed effects versus 0.09 and 0.10 under indirect effects for beetles and birds, respectively, between RCP8.5 and baseline climate scenarios when considering forest harvesting. Latitudinally, assemblage dissimilarity increased following the climate conditions pattern. Main conclusions: The two pathways are complementary and alter biodiversity, mainly caused by species turnover. Yet, responses are much larger in magnitude under mixed climate effects. Therefore, inclusion of climatic variables considers aspects other than just those related to forest landscapes, such as life cycles of animal species. Moreover, we expect differences in occupancy between the two studied taxa. This could indicate the potential range of change in boreal species concerning novel environmental conditions. Ontogenetic color change in animals is an interesting evolution‐related phenomenon that has been studied by evolutionary biologists for decades. However, obtaining quantitative and continuous color measurements throughout the life cycle of animals is a challenge. To understand the rhythm of change in tail color and sexual dichromatism, we used a spectrometer to measure the tail color of blue‐tailed skink (Plestiodon elegans) from birth to sexual maturity. Lab color space was selected due to its simplicity, fastness, and accuracy and depends on the visual sense of the observer for measuring the tail color of skinks. A strong relationship was observed between color indexes (values of L*, a*, b*) and growth time of skink. The luminance of tail color decreased from juveniles to adults in both sexes. Moreover, we observed differences in color rhythms between the sexes, which may be influenced by different behavioral strategies used by them. This study provides continuous measurements of change in tail color in skinks from juveniles to adults and offers insights into their sex‐based differences. While this study does not provide direct evidence to explain the potential factors that drive dichromatism between the sexes of lizards, our finding could serve as a reference for future studies exploring possible mechanisms of ontogenetic color change in reptiles. State‐structured populations are ubiquitous in biology, from the age‐structure of animal societies to the life cycles of parasitic species. Understanding how this structure contributes to eco‐evolutionary dynamics is critical not only for fundamental understanding but also for conservation and treatment purposes. Although some methods have been developed in the literature for modelling eco‐evolutionary dynamics in structured population, such methods are wholly lacking in the G function evolutionary game theoretic framework.In this paper, we integrate standard matrix population modelling into the G function framework to create a theoretical framework to probe eco‐evolutionary dynamics in structured populations. This framework encompasses age‐ and stage‐structured matrix models with basic density‐ and frequency‐dependent transition rates and probabilities.For both discrete and continuous time models, we define and characterize asymptotic properties of the system such as eco‐evolutionary equilibria (including ESSs) and the convergence stability of these equilibria. For multistate structured populations, we introduce an ergodic flow preserving folding method for analysing such models.The methods developed in this paper for state‐structured populations and their extensions to multistate‐structured populations provide a simple way to create, analyse and simulate eco‐evolutionary dynamics in structured populations. Simple Summary: The present MS proposes a new hypothesis that motivates why only some animals can regenerate their organs. This derives from their simple body constitution, environment where they live, evolutionary story and life cycles. Only water-dwelling animals or animals that include drastic body changes in their life (metamorphosis) can regenerate when they are adults after an injury or organ-loss. This derives from the re-utilization of numerous genes that were previously utilized for metamorphosis. Humans and the remaining terrestrial animals have lost or altered the functionality of these genes during their evolution, and therefore cannot regenerate anymore. Whether regenerative gene therapies can help to improve human regeneration is a big challenge for the future of regenerative medicine. The ability to heal or even regenerate large injuries in different animals derives from the evolution of their specific life cycles during geological times. The present, new hypothesis tries to explain the distribution of organ regeneration among animals. Only invertebrates and vertebrates that include larval and intense metamorphic transformations can broadly regenerate as adults. Basically, regeneration competent animals are aquatic while terrestrial species have largely or completely lost most of the regeneration ability. Although genomes of terrestrial species still contain numerous genes that in aquatic species allow a broad regeneration ("regenerative genes"), the evolution of terrestrial species has variably modified the genetic networks linking these genes to the others that evolved during land adaptation, resulting in the inhibition of regeneration. Loss of regeneration took place by the elimination of intermediate larval phases and metamorphic transformations in the life cycles of land invertebrates and vertebrates. Once the evolution along a specific lineage generated species that could no longer regenerate, this outcome could not change anymore. It is therefore likely that what we learn from regenerative species will explain their mechanisms of regeneration but cannot or only partly be applied to non-regenerative species. Attempts to introduce "regenerative genes" in non-regenerative species most likely would disorder the entire genetic networks of the latter, determining death, teratomas and cancer. This awareness indicates the difficulty to introduce regenerative genes and their activation pathways in species that evolved genetic networks suppressing organ regeneration. Organ regeneration in non-regenerating animals such as humans should move to bio-engineering interventions in addition to "localized regenerative gene therapies" in order to replace lost tissues or organs. This analysis introduces a stochastic herd simulation model and evaluates the estimated reproductive and economic performance of combinations of reproductive management programs for both heifers and lactating cows. The model simulates the growth, reproductive performance, production, and culling for individual animals and integrates individual animal outcomes to represent herd dynamics daily. The model has an extensible structure, allowing for future modification and expansion, and has been integrated into the Ruminant Farm Systems model, a holistic dairy farm simulation model. The herd simulation model was used to compare outcomes of 10 reproductive management scenarios based on common practices on US farms with combinations of estrous detection (ED) and artificial insemination (AI), synchronized estrous detection (synch-ED) and AI, timed AI (TAI, 5-d CIDR-Synch) programs for heifers; and ED, a combination of ED and TAI (ED-TAI, Presynch-Ovsynch), and TAI (Double-Ovsynch) with or without ED during the reinsemination period for lactating cows. The simulation was run for a 1,000-cow (milking and dry) herd for 7 yr, and we used the outcomes from the final year to evaluate results. The model accounted for incomes from milk, sold calves, and culled heifers and cows, as well as costs from breeding, AI, semen, pregnancy diagnosis, and calf, heifer, and cow feed. We found that the interaction between heifer and lactating dairy cow reproductive management programs influences herd economic performance primarily due to heifer rearing costs and replacement heifer supply. The greatest net return (NR) was achieved when combining heifer TAI and cow TAI without ED during the reinsemination period, whereas the lowest NR was obtained when combining heifer synch-ED with cow ED. Simple Summary: Tapeworm infections are among the most relevant parasitic diseases in both human and animal health. Several tapeworms rely on wild animals to complete their life cycle, among them, taeniids from the Genus Echinococcus are particularly important as they are the causative agents of cystic and alveolar echinococcosis. The study's aim was to perform a molecular screening of fecal samples collected from carcasses of wild carnivores from Central Italy using a multiplex PCR and Sanger sequencing approach. Out of 279 samples, 134 tested positive for either Taenia spp. Or Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato. Sanger sequencing was performed on every positive sample to produce a taxonomical attribution of the parasitic DNA. Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (genotype G3) was detected in only one Apennine wolf, whereas no sample tested positive for E. multilocularis. Other tapeworms that were commonly found in the sample pool were: Mesocestoides corti (syn. M. vogae), M. litteratus, Taenia serialis, and T. hydatigena. The results of the survey suggest that Echinococcus infections in the study area do not seem to be sustained by sylvatic cycles. The survey corroborates, yet again, the importance of passive surveillance of wild animals that can serve as reservoirs for zoonotic pathogens. Only one (0.4%) sample from an Apennine wolf tested positive for Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (genotype G3), whereas no sample tested positive for E. multilocularis. The most frequently detected tapeworms were: Mesocestoides corti (syn M. vogae) (12.9%), M. litteratus (10.8%), Taenia serialis (9.3%), and T. hydatigena (6.5%), other tapeworms were rarely detected. The results suggest that Echinococcus infections in Central Italy do not seem to be sustained by sylvatic cycles, confirming the absence of E. multilocularis in Central Italy. The integration of environmental cues can be critical to the successful timing of life cycle events. Yet, our understanding of cue integration remains limited, particularly regarding migratory timing and the integration of nonphotic cues. Here, we applied a recently proposed conceptual framework that considers both cue dependency and interactions among cues to experimentally investigate the integration of social or temperature cues with changing food availability in the context of facultative migratory timing. Furthermore, we examined circulating corticosterone as a potential endocrine mechanism for cue integration. We provided pine siskins, Spinus pinus , with either ad libitum food or a restricted diet and tested whether a short-term cold exposure or socially acquired information about food availability affected behaviour indicative of a migratory response, energetic reserves or circulating corticosterone levels. Temperature and food availability cues elicited distinct behavioural responses, as cold exposure increased nocturnal activity, while food restriction increased diurnal activity. Pine siskins integrated social and food cues in an additive manner, as diurnal activity levels were highest in food-restricted birds with neighbours that also had a restricted diet. However, pine siskins showed no physiological preparations for future migratory response following exposure to any cue combination. Furthermore, we found no evidence that changes in circulating corticosterone were a mechanism underpinning cue integration. Plant‐pollinator interactions are fundamental to ecosystem functioning; however, the role that succession and phenology have on these interactions is poorly understood, particularly in endangered tropical ecosystems. In highly diverse ecosystems such as tropical dry forests (TDF), variation in water and food availability determines the life cycles of animal pollinators. Therefore, understanding patterns of flowering phenology and plant‐pollinator interactions across seasons in successional environments is key to maintaining and restoring TDF.We analysed the functional dynamics of plant‐floral visitor interactions at the community level across a successional gradient in a Mexican TDF. We evaluated changes in the diversity of blooming plant species and floral visitors, phenological patterns, interaction network metrics and beta diversity among early, intermediate and late successional stages, between dry and rainy seasons.We found a higher diversity of blooming plant species and a higher richness of animal species in the intermediate and late successional stages. Peak abundance of floral visitors overlapped with flowering peaks in the late successional stages, but this was not consistently the case in the early and intermediate stages. Plant‐floral visitors networks differed in structure according to successional stage and season, but specialisation metrics were higher in late successional stages. Interaction networks were more dissimilar between dry and rainy seasons within successional stages than within seasons between successional stages, suggesting connectivity across successional sites during each season. In addition, closely related plant species do not share the same pollination systems in any successional stage.Synthesis. Our results showed that plant‐floral visitor interactions are dynamic and vary with flowering phenology and with successional changes in plant and animal diversity. Plant‐floral visitor interactions were more diverse and specialised in the late successional stages. In the rainy season, differences in network structure among successional stages are due to interaction rewiring, while in the dry season, it is caused by species turnover. Our results demonstrate that seasonality plays a key role in community diversity and network structure and highlight the importance of conserving mature forests to ensure the maintenance of critical pollination interactions across all successional stages. The ecotoxicological risk to vertebrates posed by zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) is still poorly understood, especially in animals with a biphasic life cycle, which have aquatic and terrestrial phases, such as amphibians. In the present study, we investigated whether acute exposure (7 days) to ZnO NPs and zinc chloride (ZnCl2) at three environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1, 1.0, and 10 mg L−1) induces changes in the morphology, chondrocranium, and behavior of the tadpoles of Lithobates catesbeianus (Anura: Ranidae). Tadpoles exposed to both forms of Zn did not undergo any morphological or behavioral changes at the lowest concentrations (0.1 and 1.0 mg L−1). However, the animals exposed to the highest concentration (10 mg L−1) lacked oral disc structures, were smaller in size, had a longer tail, and presented changes in the position and coiling of the intestine and malformations of the chondrocranium in comparison with the control group. This indicates that ZnO NPs and ZnCl2 altered the development of the tadpoles, causing delays in their metamorphosis and even reducing individual fitness. The tadpoles exposed to both forms of Zn at 10 mg L−1 also had reduced mobility, especially in the presence of conspecifics. Based on these findings, we emphasize the importance of studying morphological, skeletal, and behavioral biomarkers to evaluate the toxic effects of metal-based nanoparticles in amphibians. Tissue/organ remodeling and cells fate determination play key roles in the life cycle of animals. However, they are still poorly understood in insects, especially in the silkworm. The anterior silk gland (ASG) of the silkworm is essential for the formation and performance of silk fibers, but the regulatory mechanism of ASG remodeling and cells fate determination is less known. Here we found that silencing of POUM2 caused shorter ASG length, intimal structural defects, silkworm spinning failure, and the resultant naked pupae death, but cells number was not affected. Cells staining showed that DNA endoreduplication was not affected in the ASG. Transmission electron microscopy and chitin staining showed cuticle proteins and chitin were greatly reduced in the ASG during the molting period. Transcriptional analysis showed the expression profiles of cuticle proteins and chitin synthase were similar to that of POUM2 during the molting period, and POUM2 down-regulation reduced the expression of cuticle proteins, chitin synthase, autophagy and apoptosis-related genes. While the phenotype resulting from POUM2 over-expression was similar to that of POUM2 down-regulation. Cells staining revealed marked cells apoptosis with cells number reduction and inhibition of DNA endoreduplication in the ASG. Transcriptional analysis showed the expression of autophagy and apoptosis-related genes, and some cuticle proteins and chitin synthase were significantly up-regulated. The results suggest that POUM2 homeostasis regulates ASG intimal remodeling and cells fate, thus affecting ASG development, silkworm spinning and metamorphosis. Spore formers are ubiquitous microorganisms commonly isolated from most environments, including the gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) of insects and animals. Spores ingested as food and water contaminants safely transit the stomach and reach the intestine, where some of them germinate and temporarily colonize that niche. In the lower part of the GIT, they re-sporulate and leave the body as spores, therefore passing through their entire life cycle in the animal body. In the intestine, both un-germinated spores and germination-derived cells interact with intestinal and immune cells and have health-beneficial effects, which include the production of useful compounds, protection against pathogenic microorganisms, contribution to the development of an efficient immune system and modulation of the gut microbial composition. We report a genomic and physiological characterization of SF106 and SF174, two aerobic spore former strains previously isolated from ileal biopsies of healthy human volunteers. SF106 and SF174 belong respectively to the B. subtilis and Alkalihalobacillus clausii (formerly Bacillus clausii) species, are unable to produce toxins or other metabolites with cytotoxic activity against cultured human cells, efficiently bind mucin and human epithelial cells in vitro and produce molecules with antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities. Background and Aim: The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is responsible for the global coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) in humans in 2019. Although SARS-CoV-2 infection is primarily asymptomatic and transitory in companion animals, the role of these animals in the life cycle of the virus remains unclear. This study aimed to survey the first SARS-CoV-2 infection cases in pets, including a dog and three cats in São Paulo, Brazil. Materials and Methods: We invited COVID-19-positive pet owners to participate in the survey and obtained nasal, oropharyngeal, and rectal swab samples from their pets. These samples were placed in vials and subjected to a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. In addition, the owners answered an epidemiological questionnaire, and the pets underwent clinical examination and monitoring. Results: Out of 49 sampled pets, 3/19 (15.8%) cats and 1/30 (3.3%) dogs tested positive, with wide variations in viral loads. Despite the limitations of size and non-randomized sampling, our results showed that cats are more susceptible than dogs to SARS-CoV-2 infection, presenting a cat: dog ratio of 4.8: 1. Only one cat presented mild and transitory respiratory symptoms. Conclusion: Although SARS-CoV-2 infection was detected in pets in the largest South American city and the COVID-19 epicenter at the time, these first detected pet cases displayed either none or mild clinical signs. Covering: 1951 to 2022 Packed with nutrients and unable to escape, eggs are the most vulnerable stage of an animal's life cycle. Consequently, many species have evolved chemical defenses and teamed up their eggs with a vast array of toxic molecules for defense against predators, parasites, or pathogens. However, studies on egg toxins are rather scarce and the available information is scattered. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of animal egg toxins and to analyze the trends and patterns with respect to the chemistry and biosynthesis of these toxins. We analyzed their ecology, distribution, sources, occurrence, structure, function, relative toxicity, and mechanistic aspects and include a brief section on the aposematic coloration of toxic eggs. We propose criteria for a multiparametric classification that accounts for the complexity of analyzing the full set of toxins of animal eggs. Around 100 properly identified egg toxins are found in 188 species, distributed in 5 phyla: cnidarians (2) platyhelminths (2), mollusks (9), arthropods (125), and chordates (50). Their scattered pattern among animals suggests that species have evolved this strategy independently on numerous occasions. Alkaloids are the most abundant and widespread, among the 13 types of egg toxins recognized. Egg toxins are derived directly from the environment or are endogenously synthesized, and most of them are transferred by females inside the eggs. Their toxicity ranges from ρmol kg−1 to mmol kg−1, and for some species, experiments support their role in predation deterrence. Intestinal coccidiosis caused by Eimeria protozoan species is an economically important disease, especially in poultry and cattle. Anti-coccidial drugs commonly used for controlling coccidiosis are toltrazuril (TTZ) and diclazuril (DCZ). In this study, the efficacies of TTZ and DCZ were compared using a murine model, and the effect of these treatments on the induction of acquired resistance was evaluated. Male C57BL/6J mice were inoculated with 1,000 sporulated E. vermiformis oocytes and treated with TTZ or DCZ. The recommended TTZ dose for cattle (15 mg/kg) completely prevented oocyte excretion. But, mice required 5 mg/kg of DCZ, which is five times the recommended dose for cattle, to reduce oocyte excretion. In E. vermiformis re-infection, TTZ (15 mg/kg) and DCZ (5 mg/kg) treatments did not interfere with the development of acquired resistance. Bodyweight gain was significantly higher in the TTZ-treated group than in the control (untreated/infected) group and the DCZ-treated group, and no significant difference in bodyweight gain was observed between the TTZ-treated group and the healthy (uninfected/untreated) group. Analysis of T lymphocyte subsets in the spleen and mesenteric lymph nodes indicated that the relative populations of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells were reduced in the DCZ-treated and control (untreated/infected) groups, suggesting there was immunosuppression during the infection. However, no reductions in T cell populations were observed in the TTZ-treated group. Background: Kashmiri (Kashir) goat is nondescript and highly variable, medium sized, goat genetic resource of Kashmir. The goat possessing excellent survivability and is distributed in Kashmir valley. In Jammu and Kashmir, Gujjars and Bakerwals have adopted the sheep and goat rearing as their primary occupation. Body weights at different ages of life cycle of animals are important traits owing to their direct relation with farmers income. Methods: Data on body weight and body measurements viz ear length (EL), body length (BL), body height at wither (BH), chest girth (CG) and tail length (TL) of 162 adult Kasmiri (Kashir) nondescript goats, irrespective of gender, were collected from Febuary 2019 to January 2020 to estimate the body weight from body measurements. The data were subjected to standard statistical analysis using SPSS software. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation was worked out to observe association among traits under study. The linear regression was utilized to predict body weight from linear body measurements. Result: The average body weight (BW), ear length (EL), body length (BL), body height at wither (BH), chest girth (CG) and tail length (TL) of 36.94±0.99 kg, 13.13±0.36 cm, 55.48±0.43 cm, 65.93±0.62 cm, 69.61±0.73 cm and 12.94±0.15 cm, respectively were observed for Kashmiri goat in the present study. The body weight was having positive and significant correlations with BL, HW, CG and TL. The correlation of body weight with EL and TL was low. Similarly the correlation of body weight with HW was moderate whereas with BL and CG was significantly high indicating these two traits can define body weight of animal more accurately. Based on R² (coefficient of determination) criteria, the best regression model for predicting body weight of Kashmiri goat was obtained by using combination of BL (body length) and CG (chest girth) with R² (coefficient of determination) of 0.795. Prediction equation with R² value of 0.806 was obtained when all traits were included in regression model where as prediction equation with R² value of 0.589 was obtained when only chest girth was used as independent variable. The regulation of ribosome function is a conserved mechanism of growth control. While studies in single cell systems have defined how ribosomes contribute to cell growth, the mechanisms that link ribosome function to organismal growth are less clear. Here we explore this issue using Drosophila Minutes, a class of heterozygous mutants for ribosomal proteins. These animals exhibit a delay in larval development caused by decreased production of the steroid hormone ecdysone, the main regulator of larval maturation. We found that this developmental delay is not caused by decreases in either global ribosome numbers or translation rates. Instead, we show that they are due in part to loss of Rp function specifically in a subset of serotonin (5-HT) neurons that innervate the prothoracic gland to control ecdysone production. We find that these effects do not occur due to altered protein synthesis or proteostasis, but that Minute animals have reduced expression of synaptotagmin, a synaptic vesicle protein, and that the Minute developmental delay can be partially reversed by overexpression of synaptic vesicle proteins in 5-HTergic cells. These results identify a 5-HT cell-specific role for ribosomal function in the neuroendocrine control of animal growth and development. Author summary: Ribosomes are essential cellular organelles required for production of new proteins. Extensive studies have shown how ribosome synthesis and function are important for growth at the cellular level, but less is known about how these processes control tissue and body growth. We have explored this issue by studying a class of Drosophila (fruit fly) mutants–the Minutes–which lack one function copy of a ribosomal protein gene and, as a result, show a slowed rate of development from embryo to adulthood. An important phase in the life cycle of animals is the transition from the juvenile, growth stage to sexually mature adults. In fruit flies, this occurs larvae mature into pupae and is controlled by a pulse of the steroid hormone ecdysone, which is secreted from an endocrine organ called the prothoracic gland (PG). We find that Minute animals have disrupted production of ecdysone and we pinpoint this defect to loss of ribosomal protein function within a subset of neurons that project from the brain to the PG and that control ecdysone production through the neurotransmitter, serotonin.
