We present first results from James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec), Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), and Keck Cosmic Webb Imager (KCWI) integral field spectroscopy of the powerful but highly obscured host-galaxy of the jetted radio source Cygnus A. We detect 169 infrared emission lines at 1.7--27 micron and explore the kinematics and physical properties of the extended narrow-line region (NLR) in unprecedented detail. The density-stratified NLR appears to be shaped by the initial blow-out and ongoing interaction of the radio jet with the interstellar medium, creating a multi-phase bicone with a layered structure composed of molecular and ionized gas. The NLR spectrum, with strong coronal emission at kpc-scale, is well-modeled by AGN photoionization. We find evidence that the NLR is rotating around the radio axis, perhaps mediated by magnetic fields and driven by angular momentum transfer from the radio jet. The overall velocity field of the NLR is well described by 250 km/s outflow along biconical spiral flow lines, combining both rotation and outflow signatures. There is particularly bright [Fe II] 1.644 micron emission from a dense, high-velocity dispersion, photoionized clump of clouds found near the projected radio axis. Outflows of 600--2000 km/s are found in bullets and streamers of ionized gas that may be ablated by the radio jet from these clouds, driving a local outflow rate of 40 Msun/yr., Comment: Submitted to Astrophysical Journal

Centaurus A (Cen A) is the closest radio galaxy and a prime example of a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN), exhibiting complex emissions across the electromagnetic spectrum. The nature of its continuum emission, particularly the mechanisms powering it, has been a subject of considerable debate due to the fact that the AGN is deeply buried in dust. This study aims to elucidate the origin of the continuum emission in Cen A and determine the geometrical arrangement of matter in the nuclear region by the mean of optical and near-infrared spectropolarimetry. We obtained spectropolarimetric data of Cen A using the VLT/FORS2. The analysis revealed a region showing strong and narrow emission lines associated with AGN activity. After correction for interstellar polarization in the dust lane (but not for starlight), the intrinsic polarization of the scattered AGN light exhibits a polarization degree of 2-4%, decreasing from optical to near-infrared, associated with a polarization position angle perpendicular to the radio jet axis. We exclude the presence of hidden broad line in our polarized flux spectrum at more than 99% probability. Narrow emission lines are found to be strongly polarized and orthogonal to the jet position angle. We demonstrate that a beamed synchrotron jet, scattering onto the narrow line region (NLR) best fits all the observational properties reported in this paper and the literature. In this model, the base of the NLR is obscured by a giant circumnuclear region and can only become visible through perpendicular scattering onto the outermost part of the NLR, naturally producing high polarization degrees and polarization angles perpendicular to the radio structure. The growth of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) through merging has long been predicted but its detection remains elusive. However, a promising target has been discovered in the Seyfert-1 galaxy J1430+2303. If a binary system truly lies at the center of J1430+2303, the usual symmetry expected from pole-on views in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) responsible for the observed low ($\le$ 1\%) optical linear polarization in the continuum of these objects is expected to be broken. This should lead to higher-than-usual polarization degrees, together with time-dependent variations of the polarization signal. We used the specialized photopolarimeters RoboPol mounted on the 1.3m telescope at the Skinakas Observatory and the Alhambra Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (ALFOSC) mounted on the 2.56m Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) at the "Roque de los Muchachos" Observatory to measure the B-, V-, R-, and I-band polarization of J1430+2303. Observations were complemented using the FORS2 spectropolarimeter mounted on the VLT to acquire 3500 -- 8650 Angs polarized spectra. We compared our set of observations to Monte Carlo radiative-transfer predictions to look for the presence of a SMBH binary. The observed linear continuum polarization of J1430+2303 in the V and R bands is $\sim$ 0.4\% with an associated polarization angle of slightly larger than 0$^\circ$. We detected no significant changes in polarization or photometry between May, June, and July of 2022. In addition, there is no significant difference between the polarization of H$\alpha$ and the polarization of the continuum. A single SMBH at the center of an AGN model is able to reproduce the observed spectrum and polarization, while the binary hypothesis is rejected with a probability of $\sim$85\%., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures 6 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Here we present a critical view of practical problems in the analysis of optical Fe II emission lines of Type 1 AGN spectra. Besides the very complex and unclear physical interpretation of the Fe II template shape, there are other issues that might affect the results of Fe II contribution as well (like the S/N, the AGN continuum component modelling, the complex shapes of other broad and narrow emission lines that are blending in the same part of the spectrum, the galactic host stellar component that could lead to mimicking of the Fe II template shape on some parts of spectrum, etc.). In this paper we concentrate particularly on the claims of possibility that in some objects Fe II could be strongly shifted to the red. Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) are a class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) which are known to be one of the few sources of $\gamma$ rays, which originate in a relativistic beamed jet. Becuase of their relatively large distance, a poorly investigated aspect of these jetted NLS1s is their environment, and in particular their host galaxy. In this work we present the results of a morphological analysis of the host galaxy of the jetted NLS1 IRAS 20181-2244 observed with the 6.5m Baade Telescope of the Las Campanas Observatory. The GALFIT analysis ran on the Ks image, along with additional spectroscopic observations performed with the Nordic Optical Telescope, clearly revealed the presence of an interacting system of two galaxies. The data suggest that this NLS1 is hosted by a late-type galaxy, although the result is not conclusive. This analysis, along with other results in the literature, might suggest that two populations of jetted NLS1 exist. We report the first results of a survey on 74 narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) carried out in 2015 with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at 5 GHz in A-configuration. So far, this is the largest survey aimed to image the radio continuum of NLS1s. We produced radio maps in order to compare the general properties of three different samples of objects: radio-quiet NLS1s (RQNLS1s), steep-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s (S-NLS1s), and flat-spectrum radio-loud NLS1s (F-NLS1s). We find that the three classes correspond to different radio morphologies, with F-NLS1s being more compact, and RQNLS1s often showing diffuse emission on kpc scales. We also find that F-NLS1s might be low-luminosity and possibly young blazars, and that S-NLS1s are part of the parent population of F-NLS1s. We present the first results of a radio survey of 79 narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA) at 5 GHz in A configuration aimed at studying the radio properties of these sources. We report the detection of extended emission in one object: Mrk 783. This is intriguing, since the radio-loudness parameter R of this object is close to the threshold between radio-quiet and radio-loud active galactic nuclei (AGN). The galaxy is one of the few NLS1 showing such an extended emission at z < 0.1. The radio emission is divided in a compact core component and an extended component, observed on both sides of the nucleus and extending from 14 kpc south-east to 12 kpc north-west. There is no sign of a collimated jet, and the shape of the extended component is similar to those of some Seyfert galaxies. X-ray surveys have revealed a new class of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with a very low observed fraction of scattered soft X-rays, f_scat < 0.5%. Based on X-ray modeling these "X-ray new-type", or low observed X-ray scattering (hereafter:"low-scattering") sources have been interpreted as deeply-buried AGN with a high covering factor of gas. In this paper we address the questions whether the host galaxies of low-scattering AGN may contribute to the observed X-ray properties, and whether we can find any direct evidence for high covering factors from the infrared (IR) emission. We find that X-ray low-scattering AGN are preferentially hosted by highly-inclined galaxies or merger systems as compared to other Seyfert galaxies, increasing the likelihood that the line-of-sight toward the AGN intersects with high columns of host-galactic gas and dust. Moreover, while a detailed analysis of the IR emission of low-scattering AGN ESO 103-G35 remains inconclusive, we do not find any indication of systematically higher dust covering factors in a sample of low-scattering AGN based on their IR emission. For ESO 103-G35, we constrained the temperature, mass and location of the IR emitting dust which is consistent with expectations for the dusty torus. However, a deep silicate absorption feature probably from much cooler dust suggests an additional screen absorber on larger scales within the host galaxy. Taking these findings together, we propose that the low f_scat observed in low-scattering AGN is not necessarily the result of circumnuclear dust but could originate from interference of host-galactic gas with a column density of the order of 10^22 cm^-2 with the line-of-sight. We present results from a Spitzer, mid-infrared spectroscopy study of a sample of 74 galaxies located in 23 Hickson Compact Groups, chosen to be at a dynamically-active stage of HI depletion. We find evidence for enhanced warm H2 emission (i.e. above that associated with UV excitation in star-forming regions) in 14 galaxies (~20%), with 8 galaxies having extreme values of L(H2 S(0)-S(3))/L(7.7micron PAH), in excess of 0.07. Such emission has been seen previously in the compact group HCG 92 (Stephan's Quintet), and was shown to be associated with the dissipation of mechanical energy associated with a large-scale shock caused when one group member collided, at high velocity, with tidal debris in the intragroup medium. Similarly, shock excitation or turbulent heating is likely responsible for the enhanced H2 emission in the compact group galaxies, since other sources of heating (UV or X-ray excitation from star formation or AGN) are insufficient to account for the observed emission. The group galaxies fall predominantly in a region of mid-infrared color-color space identified by previous studies as being connected to rapid transformations in HCG galaxy evolution. Furthermore, the majority of H2-enhanced galaxies lie in the optical "green valley" between the blue cloud and red-sequence, and are primarily early-type disk systems. We suggest that H2-enhanced systems may represent a specific phase in the evolution of galaxies in dense environments and provide new insight into mechanisms which transform galaxies onto the optical red sequence., Comment: 34 pages, 21 figures. We use restframe near- and mid-IR data of an isotropically selected sample of quasars and radio galaxies at 1.0 \leq z \leq 1.4, which have been published previously, to study the wavelength-dependent anisotropy of the IR emission. For that we build average SEDs of the quasar subsample (= type 1 AGN) and radio galaxies (= type 2 AGN) from ~1-17 {\mu}m and plot the ratio of both average samples. From 2 to 8 {\mu}m restframe wavelength the ratio gradually decreases from 20 to 2 with values around 3 in the 10{\mu}m silicate feature. Longward of 12{\mu}m the ratio decreases further and shows some high degree of isotropy at 15 {\mu}m (ratio ~1.4). The results are consistent with upper limits derived from the X-ray/mid-IR correlation of local Seyfert galaxies. We find that the anisotropy in our high-luminosity radio-loud sample is smaller than in radio-quiet lower-luminosity AGN which may be interpreted in the framework of a receding torus model with luminosity-dependent obscuration properties. Using the Spitzer Space Telescope, we have obtained rest frame 9-16mu spectra of 11 quasars and 9 radio galaxies from the 3CRR catalog at redshifts 1.0

We present Spitzer MIR spectra of 25 FR-I radio galaxies and investigate the nature of their MIR continuum emission. MIR spectra of star-forming galaxies and quiescent elliptical galaxies are used to identify host galaxy contributions while radio/optical core data are used to isolate the nuclear non-thermal emission. Out of the 15 sources with detected optical compact cores, four sources are dominated by emission related to the host galaxy. Another four sources show signs of warm, nuclear dust emission: 3C15, 3C84, 3C270, and NGC 6251. It is likley that these warm dust sources result from hidden AGN of optical spectral type 1. The MIR spectra of seven sources are dominated by synchrotron emission, with no significant component of nuclear dust emission. In parabolic SED fits of the non-thermal cores FR-Is tend to have lower peak frequencies and stronger curvature than blazars. This is roughly consistent with the common picture in which the core emission in FR-Is is less strongly beamed than in blazars., Comment: 37 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

In this paper we address the consumption of energy by astronomers while performing their professional duties. Although we find that astronomy uses a negligible fraction of the US energy budget, the rate at which energy is consumed by an average astronomer is similar to that of a typical high-flying businessperson. We review some of the ways in which astronomers are already acting to reduce their energy consumption. In the coming decades, all citizens will have to reduce their energy consumption to conserve fossil fuel reserves and to help avert a potentially catastrophic change in the Earth's climate. The challenges are the same for astronomers as they are for everyone: decreasing the distances we travel and investing in energy-efficient infrastructure. The high profile of astronomy in the media, and the great public interest in our field, can play a role in promoting energy-awareness to the wider population. Our specific recommendations are therefore to 1) reduce travel when possible, through efficient meeting organization, and by investing in high-bandwidth video conference facilities and virtual-world software, 2) create energy-efficient observatories, computing centers and workplaces, powered by sustainable energy resources, and 3) actively publicize these pursuits., Comment: "State of the Profession" white paper submitted to the 2010 Astronomy & Astrophysics Decadal Survey. Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) observations of 3C radio galaxies and quasars shed new light on the nature of the central engines of AGN. Emission from silicate dust obscuring the central engine can be used to estimate the bolometric luminosity of an AGN. Emission lines from ions such as O IV and Ne V give another indication of the presence or lack of a hidden source of far-UV photons in the nucleus. Radio-loud AGN with relative-to-Eddington luminosity ratios of L/L_Edd < 3E-3 do not appear to have broad optical emission lines, though some do have strong silicate emission. Aromatic emission features from star formation activity are common in low-luminosity radio galaxies. Strong molecular hydrogen pure-rotational emission lines are also seen in some mid-IR weak radio galaxies, caused by either merger shocks or jet shocks in the interstellar medium., Comment: Conference proceedings to appear in "The Central Engine of Active Galactic Nuclei", ed. We present a Spitzer mid-infrared survey of 42 Fanaroff-Riley class II radio galaxies and quasars from the 3CRR catalog at redshift z<1. All of the quasars and 45+/-12% of the narrow-line radio galaxies have a mid-IR luminosity of nuLnu(15 micron) > 8E43 erg/s, indicating strong thermal emission from hot dust in the active galactic nucleus. Our results demonstrate the power of Spitzer to unveil dust-obscured quasars. The ratio of mid-IR luminous narrow-line radio galaxies to quasars indicates a mean dust covering fraction of 0.56+/-0.15, assuming relatively isotropic emission. We analyze Spitzer spectra of the 14 mid-IR luminous narrow-line radio galaxies thought to host hidden quasar nuclei. Dust temperatures of 210-660 K are estimated from single-temperature blackbody fits to the low and high-frequency ends of the mid-IR bump. Most of the mid-IR luminous radio galaxies have a 9.7 micron silicate absorption trough with optical depth <0.2, attributed to dust in a molecular torus. Forbidden emission lines from high-ionization oxygen, neon, and sulfur indicate a source of far-UV photons in the hidden nucleus. However, we find that the other 55+/-13% of narrow-line FR II radio galaxies are weak at 15 micron, contrary to single-population unification schemes. Most of these galaxies are also weak at 30 micron. We present results of near infrared imaging of the disk-galaxy-merger NGC 6240 using adaptive optics on the Keck II Telescope and reprocessed archival data from NICMOS on the Hubble Space Telescope. Both the North and South nuclei of NGC 6240 are clearly elongated, with considerable sub-structure within each nucleus. In K' band there are at least two point-sources within the North nucleus; we tentatively identify the south-western point-source within the North nucleus as the position of one of the two AGNs. Within the South nucleus, the northern sub-nucleus is more highly reddened. Based upon the nuclear separation measured at 5 GHz, we suggest that the AGN in the South nucleus is still enshrouded in dust at K' band, and is located slightly to the north of the brightest point in K' band. Within the South nucleus there is strong H2 1-0 S(1) line emission from the northern sub-nucleus, contrary to the conclusions of previous seeing-limited observations. Narrowband H2 emission-line images show that a streamer or ribbon of excited molecular hydrogen connects the North and South nuclei. We suggest that this linear feature corresponds to a bridge of gas connecting the two nuclei, as seen in computer simulations of mergers. Many point-like regions are seen around the two nuclei. These are most prominent at 1.1 microns with NICMOS, and in K'-band with Keck adaptive optics. We present XMM-Newton observations of the radio galaxy 3C 120. The hard X-ray spectrum contains a marginally resolved Fe I K-alpha emission line with FWHM=9,000 km/s and an equivalent width of 57 eV. The line arises via fluorescence in a broad-line region with covering fraction of 0.4. There is no evidence of relativistically broad Fe K-alpha, contrary to some previous reports. The normal equivalent widths of the X-ray and optical emission lines exclude a strongly beamed synchrotron component to the hard X-ray and optical continua. There is an excess of 0.3-2 keV soft X-ray continuum over an extrapolation of the hard X-ray power-law, which may arise in a disk corona. Analysis of an archival Chandra image shows that extended emission from the jet and other sources contributes <3% of the total X-ray flux. A break in the X-ray spectrum below 0.6 keV indicates an excess neutral hydrogen column density of N_H=1.57 * 10^21 cm^{-2}. However, the neutral absorber must have an oxygen abundance of <1/50 of the solar value to explain the absence of an intrinsic or intervening O I edge. There is no ionized absorption in the soft X-ray spectrum, but there is a weak, narrow O VIII Ly-alpha emission line. We do not detect previously claimed O VIII absorption from the intervening intergalactic medium. Radio observations at 37 GHz show a fast, high frequency flare starting 8 days after the XMM-Newton observation. However, this has no obvious effect on the X-ray spectrum. The X-ray spectrum, including the soft excess, became harder as the X-ray flux decreased, with an estimated pivot energy of 40 keV. The UV and soft X-ray fluxes are strongly correlated over the 120 ks duration of the XMM-Newton observation. This is qualitatively consistent with Comptonization of UV photons by a hot corona. Thermal models for the quasar Big Blue Bump generally lead to bound-free continuum features, which may be in absorption or emission. Searches for Lyman edges attributable to quasar atmospheres (in particular accretion disk atmospheres) have been ambiguous at best, but various relativistic and non-LTE effects may make them hard to detect. The Balmer edge features tentatively predicted by such models might be easier to detect since they'd form farther out in the potential wells. These can be sought in certain cases using spectropolarimetry to remove the effects of atomic emission (i.e. the Small Blue Bump) from the spectrum. We do find apparent Balmer edges in absorption in several quasars using this method! Although the features we see are believable and apparently common, more data and more modeling are needed to verify that they are best interpreted as atmospheric Balmer edges., Comment: To appear in the proceedings of "AGN Physics with the SDSS", eds. We present a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of extended [OIII] emission for a sample of 60 Seyfert galaxies (22 Seyfert 1's and 38 Seyfert 2's), selected based on their far infrared properties. The observations for 42 of these galaxies were done in a snapshot survey with WFPC2. The remaining 18 were obtained from the HST archive, most of which were observed with the same configuration. These observations cover 68% of the objects in the sample defined by Kinney et al. (2000), and create a valuable dataset for the study of the Narrow Line Region (NLR) properties of Seyfert galaxies. In this paper, we present the details of the observations, reductions, and measurements. We also discuss the extended structure of individual sources, and the relation of this emission to the radio and host galaxy morphology. We also address how representative the subsample of [O III]-imaged galaxies is of the entire sample, and possible selection effects that may affect this comparison of the properties of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies., Comment: 27 pages including 14 figures, to appear in ApJS October 2003

We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope (HST) survey of extended [OIII] emission in a sample of 60 nearby Seyfert galaxies (22 Seyfert 1's and 38 Seyfert 2's), selected by mostly isotropic properties. The comparison between the semi major axis size of their [OIII] emitting regions (R_Maj) shows that Seyfert 1's and Seyfert 2's have similar distributions, which seems to contradict Unified Model predictions. We discuss possible ways to explain this result, which could be due either to observational limitations or the models used for the comparison with our data. We show that Seyfert 1 Narrow Line Regions (NLR's) are more circular and concentrated than Seyfert 2's, which can be attributed to foreshortening in the former. We find a good correlation between the NLR size and luminosity, following the relation R_Maj propto L([OIII])^0.33, which is flatter than a previous one found for QSO's and Seyfert 2's. We discuss possible reasons for the different results, and their implications to photoionization models. We confirm previous results which show that the [OIII] and radio emission are well aligned, and also find no correlation between the orientation of the extended [OIII] emission and the host galaxy major axis. This agrees with results showing that the torus axis and radio jet are not aligned with the host galaxy rotation axis, indicating that the orientation of the gas in the torus, and not the spin of the black hole, determine the orientation of the accretion disk, and consequently the orientation of the radio jet., Comment: 17 pages including 12 figures, to appear in ApJ

The clear sign of a hidden quasar inside a radio galaxy is the appearance of quasar spectral features in its polarized (scattered) light. However that observational test requires suitably placed scattering material to act as a mirror, allowing us to see the nuclear light. A rather robust and more general test for a hidden quasar is to look for the predicted high mid-IR luminosity from the nuclear obscuring matter. The nuclear waste heat is detected and well isolated in the nearest narrow line radio galaxy, Cen A. This confirms other indications that Cen A does contain a modest quasar-like nucleus. However we show here that M87 does not: at high spatial resolution, the mid-IR nucleus is seen to be very weak, and consistent with simple synchrotron emission from the base of the radio jet. This fairly robustly establishes that there are "real" narrow line radio galaxies, without the putative accretion power, and with essentially all the luminosity in kinetic form. Next we show the intriguing mid-IR morphology of Cygnus A, reported previously by us and later discussed in detail by Radomski et al. (2002). All of this mid-IR emission is consistent with reprocessing by a hidden quasar, known to exist from spectropolarimetry by Ogle et al. (1997) and other evidence., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

The large, powerful Fanaroff-Riley class II radio source 3CR 68.1 is an optically red quasar with strong evidence for dust reddening, intrinsic ultraviolet line absorption, and X-ray absorption. In the context of its large, extended radio structure and the evidence for intrinsic material along the line of sight, it is a good candidate for a quasar seen through the edge of an obscuring torus proposed by unified schemes. The compact radio core coincident with the optical position of the quasar is extremely weak compared to the very bright and luminous radio lobes, suggesting that the radio core might also suffer absorption. We observed 3CR 68.1 at six frequencies and show that the radio core has a flat spectrum with no evidence for free-free absorption or other strong absorption mechanisms. This result helps establish an empirical intrinsic lower range for core-to-lobe radio flux in the most powerful radio sources., Comment: To appear in the Astronomical Journal

We present a series of statistical tests using homogeneous data and measurements for a sample of Seyfert galaxies. These galaxies were selected from mostly isotropic properties, their far infrared fluxes and warm infrared colors, which provide a considerable advantage over the criteria used by most investigators in the past, like ultraviolet excess. We discuss the viability of shocks as the principal source of ionization for the Narrow Line Region of Seyfert galaxies. We present the preliminary results of [OIII]5007A and radio 3.6 cm imaging surveys of Seyferts, discuss the effects of shocks in the ionization of two galaxies, and also calculate an upper limit to the Hbeta luminosity that can be due to shocks in 36 galaxies with unresolved radio emission. Historically the narrow line radio galaxies were thought to be intrinsically nonthermal, and without significant accretion. When the Unified Model came along the compelling observational motivation for this lost some force: some are found to be hidden broad line objects, and in principle that could be the case with all of them. The clear sign of a hidden quasar is a normal quasar spectrum in polarized (scattered) light. However that test requires a suitably placed "mirror." A more robust test is the high predicted mid-IR core luminosity reradiating from the obscuring matter. Cygnus A has this component, but M87 does not., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures. Based on the most recent QSO ultraviolet spectra, the covering factor of the clouds of the Broad Line Region (BLR) is about 30%, or larger. This value would imply that in at least 30% of the QSOs our line of sight crosses one, or more, BLR clouds and, in the latter case, the UV spectrum should show a sharp Ly-edge in absorption. This Ly-edge in absorption is never observed. This paradox is solved if, as suggested by various authors, the BLR is flattened and the dusty gas in the outer parts, on the same plane, prevents the observation along the lines of sight passing through the BLR clouds. The objects observed edge-on (with respect to the flattened BLR) would be classified as obscured QSOs or, within the framework of the unified model, type 2 QSOs. The covering factor of the BLR constrains the fraction of obscured QSOs to be QSO2/QSO1 > 0.5. This lower limit is already high with respect to the number of candidate type 2 QSOs claimed so far. We present a series of statistical tests done to a sample of 29 Seyfert 1 and 59 Seyfert 2 galaxies selected from mostly isotropic properties, their far infrared fluxes and warm infrared colors. Such selection criteria provide a profound advantage over the criteria used by most investigators in the past, such as ultraviolet excess. These tests were done using ground based high resolution VLA A-configuration 3.6 cm radio and optical B and I imaging data. From the relative number of Seyfert 1's and Seyfert 2's we calculate that the torus half opening angle is 48deg. We show that, as seen in previous papers, there is a lack of edge-on Seyfert 1 galaxies, suggesting dust and gas along the host galaxy disk probably play an important role in hiding some nuclei from direct view. We find that there is no statistically significant difference in the distribution of host galaxy morphological types and radio luminosities of Seyfert 1's and Seyfert 2's, suggesting that previous results showing the opposite may have been due to selection effects. The average extension of the radio emission of Seyfert 1's is smaller than that of Seyfert 2's by a factor of ~2-3, as predicted by the Unified Model. A search for galaxies around our Seyferts allows us to put a lower and an upper limit on the possible number of companions around these galaxies of 19% and 28%, respectively, with no significant difference in the number of companion galaxies between Seyfert 1's and Seyfert 2's. We also show that there is no preference for the radio jets to be aligned closer to the host galaxy disk axis in late type Seyferts, unlike results claimed by previous papers. These results, taken together, provide strong support for a Unified Model in which type 2 Seyferts contain a torus seen more edge-on than the torus in type 1 Seyferts., Comment: 26 pages, 3 tables and 6 figures. Optical spectropolarimetry and broadband polarimetry in other wavebands has been a key to understanding many diverse aspects of AGN. In some cases polarization is due to synchrotron radiation, and in other cases it's due to scattering. Recognition of relativistically beamed optical synchrotron emission by polarization was vital for understanding blazars (BL Lacs and Optically Violently Variable quasars), both physically and geometrically. Radio polarimetry of quiescent AGN is equally important, again for both purposes. Scattering polarization was central to the Unified Model for Seyferts, Radio Galaxies and (high ionization) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies. It provides a periscope for viewing AGN from other directions. Finally, if we could understand its message, polarization would also provide major insights regarding the nature of the AGN "Featureless Continuum" and Broad (emission) Line Region. I point out that high ionization ULIRGs have all the exact right properties to be called Quasar 2s. Mid-IR observations generally don't penetrate to the nucleus, greatly reducing their ability to diagnose the energy source. We present the results of VLA A-array 8.46 GHz continuum imaging of 55 Seyfert galaxies (19 Seyfert 1's and 36 Seyfert 2's). These galaxies are part of a larger sample of 88 Seyfert galaxies, selected from mostly isotropic properties, the flux at 60 mum and warm infrared 25 mum to 60 mum colors. These images are used to study the structure of the radio continuum emission of these galaxies and their position angles, in the case of extended sources. These data, combined with information from broad-band B and I observations, have been used to study the orientation of radio jets relative to the plane of their host galaxies (Kinney et al. 2000)., Comment: To appear in The Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, February 2001, 14 pages, 1 figure (6 pages), 2 tables

We present the study of the relative angle between the accretion disk (or radio jet) and the galaxy disk for a sample of Seyfert galaxies selected from a mostly isotropic property, the 60$\mu$m flux. For each galaxy we have a pair of points ($i$,$\delta$), which are the inclination of the galaxy relative to the line of sight and the angle between the jet projected into the plane of the sky and the host galaxy major axis, respectively. This data is combined with a statistical technique to determine the distribution of $\beta$ angles {\it in 3 dimensions}, the angle between the jet and the host galaxy plane axis. The analysis of the data, not differentiating between Seyfert 1's and 2's, showed that the observed distribution of $i$ and $\delta$ values can be well represented by a homogeneous $\beta-$distribution in the range $0^{\circ}\leq\beta\leq90^{\circ}$. However, when we distinguished between Seyfert 1's and 2's, the models could not represent Seyfert 1's adequately. It was necessary to introduce viewing angle restrictions, that a galaxy can only be recognized as a Seyfert 1 if the angle between the jet and the line of sight ($|\phi|$) is smaller than a given angle $\phi_c$ and that the galaxy inclination $i$ is smaller than an angle $i_c$, in order to have statistically acceptable models. This is a direct and independent confirmation of the underlying concepts of the Unified Model. We demonstrate that, by combining optical, radio and X-ray observations of a Seyfert, it is possible to provide a direct measurement of the angle $\beta$ between the direction of the radio jet and the normal to the plane of the spiral host galaxy. To do so, we make the assumptions that the inner radio jet is perpendicular to the X-ray observed inner accretion disk, and that the observed jet (or the stronger component, if the jet is two-sided) is physically closer to Earth than the plane of the galaxy. The detection of polarized continuum and line emission from the nucleus of NGC 4258 by Wilkes et al. (1995) provides an intriguing application of the unified model of Seyfert nuclei to a galaxy in which there is known to be an edge-on, rotating disk of molecular gas surrounding the nucleus. Unlike most Seyfert nuclei, however, NGC 4258 has strongly polarized narrow emission lines. To further investigate the origin of the polarized emission, we have obtained spectropolarimetric observations of the NGC 4258 nucleus at the Keck-II telescope. The narrow-line polarizations range from 1.0% for [S II] 6716 to 13.9% for the [O II] 7319,7331 blend, and the position angle of polarization is oriented nearly parallel to the projected plane of the masing disk. A correlation between critical density and degree of polarization is detected for the forbidden lines, indicating that the polarized emission arises from relatively dense (n_e > 10^4 cm^-3) gas. An archival Hubble Space Telescope narrow-band [O III] image shows that the narrow-line region has a compact, nearly unresolved core, implying a FWHM size of <2.5 pc. We discuss the possibility that the polarized emission might arise from the accretion disk itself and become polarized by scattering within the disk atmosphere. A more likely scenario is an obscuring torus or strongly warped disk surrounding the inner portion of a narrow-line region which is strongly stratified in density. We have carried out a spectropolarimetric search for hidden broad-line quasars in three ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) discovered in the positional correlations between sources detected in deep radio surveys and the IRAS Faint Source Catalog. Only the high-ionization Seyfert 2 galaxy TF J1736+1122 is highly polarized, displaying a broad-line spectrum visible in polarized light. The other two objects, TF J1020+6436 and FF J1614+3234, display spectra dominated by a population of young (A-type) stars similar to those of ``E + A'' galaxies. They are unpolarized, showing no sign of hidden broad-line regions. The presence of young starburst components in all three galaxies indicates that the ULIRG phenomenon encompasses both AGN and starburst activity, but the most energetic ULIRGs do not necessarily harbor ``buried quasars''. We find that a luminous infrared galaxy is most likely to host an obscured quasar if it exhibits a high-ionization ([O III] 5007/Hb >~ 5) spectrum typical of a ``classic'' Seyfert 2 galaxy with little or no Balmer absorption lines, is ``ultraluminous'' (L_IR >~ 10^12 L_sun), and has a ``warm'' IR color (f_25/f_60 >~ 0.25). The detection of hidden quasars in this group but not in the low-ionization, starburst-dominated ULIRGs (classified as LINERs or H II galaxies) may indicate an evolutionary connection, with the latter being found in younger systems., Comment: 30 pages, including 3 tables and 8 figs, to be published in the Astrophysical Journal

We present a new investigation of the Cloverleaf (z=2.558) based on the combination of archival HST/WFPC2 data, recent IRAM CO(7-6) maps and wide field CFHT/FOCAM images. The deepest WFPC2 observation shows a significant overdensity of I ~ 23--25 galaxies around the Cloverleaf that we interpret as the presence of a cluster of galaxies along the line of sight. The typical magnitude, red color (R-I ~ 0.9) and small angular size of these galaxies suggest that the cluster is very distant and could be associated with the absorption systems observed in the spectra of the quasar spots. The Cloverleaf is probably the result of the lensing effects of a system which includes a single-galaxy and one of the most distant cluster of galaxies. We have modelled the lens using altogether the WFPC2 data and the IRAM/CO(7-6) map, considereing two cases: one in which the mass model is a galaxy and a dark halo at z=1.7, and a second one in which the mass model is the combination of a cluster and an individual galaxy located amid the Cloverleaf, both at z=1.7. The CO source is found to form a ring-like structure orbiting the central engine at ~ 100km/s at a radial distance of ~ 100pc, leading to a black-hole mass of ~ 10^9 M_solar. The cluster component increases significantly the convergence of the lens and this pulls down the requirement on the mass of the lensing galaxy by a factor 2. This may explain the mystery of the lensing galaxy not detected yet., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, A&A in press

We use the radio axis as an indicator of the orientation of the obscuring torus in Seyfert galaxies, and analyze the difference between the position angles of extended radio structures and host galaxy major axis of Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies. We find that Seyfert 1's are less likely to have extended radio structures along the host galaxy major axis, while Seyfert 2's have these structures distributed in most directions. We also find a zone of avoidance in the distribution of position angles; both Seyfert 1's and Seyfert 2's seem to avoid close alignment between the radio axis and the host galaxy plane axis. These results are analyzed from the point of view of a model in which Seyfert 1's have their obscuring torus axis aligned preferentially along the host galaxy disk axis, and Seyfert 2's have their torus axis laying at an intermediate angle between the galaxy disk and its axis., Comment: 9 pages of text, 10 figures and 1 table. We have made the first VLBI synthesis images of the H2O maser emission associated with the central engine of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1068. Emission extends about +/-300 km/s from the systemic velocity. Images with submilliarcsecond angular resolution show that the red-shifted emission lies along an arc to the northwest of the systemic emission. (The blue-shifted emission has not yet been imaged with VLBI.) Based on the maser velocities and the relative orientation of the known radio jet, we propose that the maser emission arises on the surface of a nearly edge-on torus, where physical conditions are conducive to maser action. The visible part of the torus is axially thick, with comparable height and radius. The velocity field indicates sub-Keplerian differential rotation around a central mass of about 1e7 Msun that lies within a cylindrical radius of about 0.65 pc. The estimated luminosity of the central engine is about 0.5 of the Eddington limit. There is no detectable compact radio continuum emission near the proposed center of the torus (T_B< 5e6 K on size scales of about 0.1 pc), so that the observed flat-spectrum core cannot be direct self-absorbed synchrotron radiation., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures.
