El vasto territorio del Chaco Seco y el Espinal se consolida como uno de los centros globales de producción de granos y carne. Tanto por distintas normas legales y limitaciones productivas, como por causas culturales, el bosque nativo se preserva en grandes porciones y numerosos pequeños fragmentos inmersos en la matriz agrícola. Estos remanentes suelen pasar desapercibidos para la comunidad científica y para los tomadores de decisiones, y quedan al margen de la planificación territorial y de acciones de conservación. En este trabajo describimos la estructura espacial de los remanentes y generamos un esquema de clasificación que permite identificar distintos tipos según sus propiedades espaciales. Por medio de una estrategia de clasificación basada en objetos, cartografiamos -22000 remanentes en ocho áreas focales (AF) dispersas en el territorio, para lo cual usamos imágenes satelitales CBERS-2B. Mediante índices espaciales, estos remanentes de tamaños, formas y niveles de aislamiento variables fueron categorizados en cinco clases, desde 'isletas' hasta 'bloques compactos'. La superficie de remanentes resultó mayor en el Chaco Seco que en el Espinal (entre 10.1% y 19.4% en la primera región, y entre 3.1% y 7.3% en la segunda). Las diferencias en el nivel de fragmentación se amplificaron entre AF, dependiendo tanto de la superficie total de remanentes como de la ocurrencia relativa de distintos tipos. Así, en el AF de San Luis, la fragmentación resultó 70 veces superior a la del AF de Anta (Salta). En este trabajo brindamos herramientas para identificar y monitorear estos remanentes; estas herramientas podrán ser consideradas tanto con fines productivos como de conservación. Species loss and invasion of exotic species are two components of global biodiversity change that are expected to influence ecosystem functioning. Yet how they interact in natural settings remains unclear. Experiments have revealed two major mechanisms for the observed increase in primary productivity with plant species richness. Plant productivity may rise with species richness due to the increased amount of resources used by more diverse communities (niche complementarity) or through the increased probability of including a highly productive, dominant species in the community (sampling effect). Current evidence suggests that niche complementarity is the most relevant mechanism, whereas the sampling effect would only play a minor and transient role in natural systems. In turn, exotic species can invade by using untapped resources or because they possess a fitness advantage over resident species allowing them to dominate the community. We argue that the sampling effect can be a significant biodiversity mechanism in ecosystems invaded by dominant exotic species, and that the effect can be persistent even after decades of succession. We illustrate this idea by analyzing tree species richness-productivity relationships in a subtropical montane forest (NW Argentina) heavily invaded by Ligustrum lucidum, an evergreen tree from Asia. We found that the forest biomass increased along a natural gradient of tree species richness whether invaded by L. lucidum or not. Consistent with the sampling effect, L. lucidum invasion tripled total tree biomass irrespective of species richness, and monocultures of L. lucidum were more productive than any of the most species-rich, uninvaded communities. Hence, the sampling effect may not be restricted to randomly assembled, synthetic communities. Exotic species may influence the process of decomposition, either directly (through differences in the quality and/or quantity of leaf-litter) or indirectly (by altering microclimatic conditions and the abundance and/or activity of decomposers). The aims of our study were: I) to compare the decomposability of the most abundant exotic and native species in secondary forests of the Sierra de San Javier, Tucumán, II) to assess the effect of microenvironemtal conditions on the rate of decomposition of an homogeneous substrate and III) to evaluate the effect of the litterbags mesh size on the decomposition process. To do this, we incubated leaf-litter of 7 native and 7 exotic species under standard conditions for one year and also leaf-litter of Populus deltoides (homogeneous substrate) in native and invaded by Ligustrum lucidum secondary forest patches in bags with two mesh sizes. Native and exotic species did not differ in their weight loss rates, but there were interspecific differences. The decay constant of the homogeneous substrate was lower in invaded patches so it is possible that L. lucidum modify the composition and /or activity of decomposing organisms and generate changes in micro-environmental conditions. In addition, decomposition was higher in bags with larger mesh size. This pattern may be explained by the differential access of macro invertebrates. Our results suggest the absence of a pattern of decay in native and exotic species as groups, and the potential influence that L. lucidum would have over the factors controlling littler decomposition. Background and aims: Alien success has frequently been associated with changes in the concentrations of soil nutrients. We aim to investigate the effects of plant invasion on soil nutrients, potential enzyme activity and litter elemental composition and stoichiometry. Methods: We compared stands of secondary forest invaded by Ligustrum lucidum and those dominated by natives, and performed litter chemical analyses on 3 native and 2 exotic tree species. Results: Soils of invaded sites had 20 and 30 % increase in β-glucosidase and alkaline phosphatase activity, higher Olsen-phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) concentrations and lower nitrogen (N) concentration and N:P, N:K and ammonium:Olsen-P ratios. Invaded and non-invaded sites differed in their overall nutrient composition and enzyme activity. Natives and exotics differed in nine of the 16 litter elemental composition and stoichiometry variables analyzed. Conclusions: The low N:P ratio in litter, the decrease in soil N in invaded stands and the low N concentration of exotics suggest that N is the limiting nutrient and that exotic success is related to higher N uptake and use efficiency. The higher investment in the acquisition of soil resources, higher nutrient uptake and use efficiency of limiting nutrients contribute to the success of exotics in this subtropical forest. Abstract: Invasions of exotic tree species can cause profound changes in community composition and structure, and may even cause legacy effect on nutrient cycling via litter production. In this study, we compared leaf litter decomposition of two invasive exotic trees (Ligustrum lucidum and Morus sp.) and two dominant native trees (Cinnamomum porphyria and Cupania vernalis) in native and invaded (Ligustrum-dominated) forest stands in NW Argentina. We measured leaf attributes and environmental characteristics in invaded and native stands to isolate the effects of litter quality and habitat characteristics. Species differed in their decomposition rates and, as predicted by the different species colonization status (pioneer vs. late successional), exotic species decayed more rapidly than native ones. Invasion by L. lucidum modified environmental attributes by reducing soil humidity. Decomposition constants (k) tended to be slightly lower (−5%) for all species in invaded stands. High SLA, low tensile strength, and low C:N of Morus sp. distinguish this species from the native ones and explain its higher decomposition rate. Contrary to our expectations, L. lucidum leaf attributes were similar to those of native species. Decomposition rates also differed between the two exotic species (35% higher in Morus sp.), presumably due to leaf attributes and colonization status. Given the high decomposition rate of L. lucidum litter (more than 6 times that of natives) we expect an acceleration of nutrient circulation at ecosystem level in Ligustrum-dominated stands. Abstract: Grazing and fire have been the most common disturbances in many grasslands ecosystems for many centuries. However, some mountain regions are currently experiencing a decrease in land use, and therefore in frequency or intensity of these disturbances. In this study, we evaluated how fire and grazing affect vegetation structure in mountain grasslands of NW Argentina. We hypothesized that they would have differential effects on plant species richness, vegetation composition and aerial biomass dynamics, predicting that fire would have a stronger effect on these variables than grazing. We tested this hypothesis by performing a controlled field experiment in which we manipulated fire and compared grazed plots with ungrazed exclosures, simulating current (high frequent fires and low livestock load) and future (fire suppression and grazing exclosure) scenarios. We recorded total of 90 species with 40 shared among all treatments. Tussock grasses (Elionurus muticus), followed by three shrubs represented the main contribution to live biomass in all treatments. Species richness, equitativity and diversity were higher in burned plots. Multivariate ordination indicated that burning is more important than grazing in determining plot to plot similarity in species composition. Burning reduced total aerial biomass, standing dead biomass and litter, as well as live biomass, that was also reduced by grazing. Burning also reduced standing dead biomass and litter proportions, but increased live biomass contribution, showing a more evident effect within the grazed plots. Burning, seasonality and growing season had significant effects on the relative contribution of all biomass categories. Biomass consumption showed a strong seasonality, being significantly higher in January of both growing seasons, and it was not affected by burning. Question: How are plant communities of the Flooding Pampa grasslands spatially distributed? How do canopy dynamics of the different communities vary among seasons and years? Location: Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Methods: We characterized the distribution of communities through a supervised classification based on four Landsat 5 TM images. We sampled species composition of 200 sites, with 130 of them corresponding to natural communities. Of the sampling areas 60% were used to classify, and the remaining areas to assess classification accuracy. We characterized the seasonal and interannual variability of canopy dynamics using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) data provided by MODIS /Terra images. Results: Overall accuracy of the classification was satisfactory. The resulting maps showed a landscape formed by a matrix of extended lowlands with small patches of mesophytic and humid mesophytic meadows. The October scene (near the peak of productivity) was particularly important in discriminating among communities. The seasonal pattern of NDVI differed among communities and years. Mesophytic meadows had the highest NDVI mean and the lowest interannual coefficient of variation, halophytic steppes had the lowest mean, and vegetated ponds were the most variable. Conclusions: These grasslands have a fine-grained heterogeneity at the landscape scale. Each plant community has distinct seasonal and interannual canopy dynamics. These two features of grassland structure and functioning represent key information for rangeland management that may be obtained through a combination of minor field sampling and remote sensing. Successional patches are a large component of forest ecosystems throughout the world and their vegetation composition is conditioned by multiple factors such as land use history, disturbances, environmental conditions and landscape context. We investigated the relative contribution of historical, environmental, biotic and spatial factors in determining vegetation composition and invasion by exotic species in secondary forest patches of Sierra de San Javier, Tucumán, Argentina. We estimated canopy cover for shrub, vine and tree species distributed over 51 patches with known land use history. We also recorded environmental, historical and spatial variables and used multivariate techniques to explore the relationship between forest composition and explanatory variables. Land use, time since abandonment, altitude, slope and cover of different strata were related to the vegetation pattern in the study site, and they were all significantly structured over space. Exotic species appeared to differ from natives in their response to explanatory variables. Overall, exotic species were dominant on the edges of young patches originated from herbaceous crops, but the total number of exotic species was related to the distance to urban areas and small farms identified as potential sources of exotic propagules. Vegetation composition of secondary forests in NW Argentina was related to historical and environmental factors, but spatial variables strongly influenced vegetation composition as well as the variation in explanatory variables. Invasive plant species can alter litter decomposition rates through changes in litter quality, environment conditions, and decomposer organisms (microflora and soil fauna), but limited research has examined their direct impact on soil fauna. We assessed the abundance and relative contribution of soil meso- and macrofauna to litter decomposition in a forest invaded by Ligustrum lucidum W.T. Aiton and in a noninvaded forest in a subtropical mountain forest in northwestern Argentina, using litterbags (0.01, 2, and 6 mm mesh size). Additionally, we analyzed the litter quality and soil properties of both forest types. Soil fauna abundance was lower in the invaded forest than in the noninvaded forest. The contribution of soil macrofauna to litter decomposition was important in both forest types, but soil mesofauna contribution was significant only in noninvaded forest. Litter decomposition was significantly faster in the invaded forest, consistent with its higher quality litter compared with the uninvaded forest. Invaded forest had significantly lower litter accumulation, lower soil moisture, and greater soil pH than noninvaded forest. Our results showed that although soil fauna was less abundant and played a less pronounced role in litter decomposition in invaded forest, these changes did not translate into a reduced litter decomposition rate due to the higher quality of litter produced in the invaded forest. Questions: It is well documented that invasive alien plants can reduce species richness and diversity and modify the composition of invaded communities. However, our knowledge on the impacts of invasive alien plants on the community functional structure and ecosystem properties and the mechanisms underlying these changes is more limited. We evaluated how the community functional structure and ecosystem properties change along a gradient of Ligustrum lucidum abundance. Location: Subtropical mountain forest in NW Argentina. Methods: We conducted tree vegetation sampling in 164 plots distributed along a gradient of L. lucidum abundance. For L. lucidum and for the most abundant tree species in these plots we estimated six functional traits (specific leaf area, leaf tensile strength, leaf nitrogen concentration, leaf water potential, wood density and maximum plant height), as well as their relative growth rates. Then, we calculated indices of community functional structure (community‐weighted means for each trait; richness, evenness, divergence and dispersion). We explored the extent to which the invasive success of L. lucidum and its impact may be attributed to niche differentiation or to fitness superiority. Finally, we explored how L. lucidum abundance alters ecosystem properties. Results: Some indicators of community functional structure changed linearly while others tended to saturate along the invasion gradient. L. lucidum has a higher growth rate than resident species and it lays close to the periphery, but within the limits of the functional space defined by resident trees. L. lucidum tends to displace more functionally similar resident species. Soil moisture and N content declined, while soil C:N increased with L. lucidum abundance. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that both niche differentiation and fitness superiority contribute to explain the invasion success of L. lucidum and the changes in functional structure of the community along the gradient of L. lucidum abundance with evident impacts on ecosystem properties. Ligustrum lucidum is a highly invasive East Asian tree that successfully colonizes several subtropical and temperate areas around the world. Its invasion capacity results from a widespread human use mostly in urban and periurban settings, very abundant fruit and seed production, small bird-dispersed fruits, high germination rates, resprouting capacity, fast growth rates, low herbivory levels and tolerance to a wide range of light, temperature and soil. All these traits contribute to its ability to rapidly increase in abundance, alter biodiversity, landscape ecology and limit its management. This paper reviews the current knowledge on L. lucidum with particular focus on its uses, distribution, invasiveness, ecological and economic impacts and control measures. Most relevant aspect of the review highlight the negative ecological impacts of L. lucidum, its potential to continue expanding its range of distribution and the need of further studies on the eco-physiology of the species, economic impact and social perception of its invasion and early warning systems. Background and aims: Biodiversity information of protected areas is essential to develop management and conservation strategies. Here we 1) evaluate the number of records of plant and vertebrate species of National Parks (NP) from Argentina based on the species richness of the province where each NP is located, 2) analyze possible explanatory variables of the number of records in each NP, and 3) describe the vegetation registered in three iconic NPs of the country. M&M: The records of vascular plants and vertebrates, the characteristics of each NP and the species richness of the province where each NP is located were obtained from open access databases. For Calilegua, Iguazú and Nahuel Huapi NPs we describe the number of plants according to family, origin, endemism, life form, IUCN categorization and invasiveness of non-native species. Results: All NPs showed great variability in their records. There were few records of non-native species. Older NPs had more non-native plants records. The list of plants of Nahuel Huapi NP showed more records than Calilegua and Iguazú. The number of plants categorized by IUCN was very low. Almost all recorded non-native plants were invasive elsewhere in the world. Conclusions: We emphasize the importance of increasing the survey of species in all NP, particularly vascular plants and in recently created NPs. Special attention must be given to non-native species in order to avoid socio-ecological problems associated with biological invasions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deadwood is a large global carbon store with its store size partially determined by biotic decay. Microbial wood decay rates are known to respond to changing temperature and precipitation. Termites are also important decomposers in the tropics but are less well studied. An understanding of their climate sensitivities is needed to estimate climate change effects on wood carbon pools. Using data from 133 sites spanning six continents, we found that termite wood discovery and consumption were highly sensitive to temperature (with decay increasing >6.8 times per 10°C increase in temperature)—even more so than microbes. Termite decay effects were greatest in tropical seasonal forests, tropical savannas, and subtropical deserts. With tropicalization (i.e., warming shifts to tropical climates), termite wood decay will likely increase as termites access more of Earth’s surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Question: What factors limit woody plant recruitment in a mosaic landscape where former agricultural lands are dominated by the invasive tree Ligustrum lucidum (Oleaceae)? Location: Subtropical northwestern Argentina. Methods: In secondary forest patches, we measured (I) tree, shrub and liana abundance in different size classes; (2) seed rain of Ligustrum and two native trees and (3) topographic, soil and light variables. We used spatial autoregressive models to test for effects of Ligustrum dominance and environment on native plant abundance in each size class. We used multiple regression on resemblance matrices to quantify the relative importance of spatial (e.g. dispersal) and environmental effects on native species composition. Results: Native tree abundance in the smallest size class was unrelated to Ligustrum canopy dominance, while native tree abundance in larger size classes and native liana abundance were negatively correlated with Ligustrum dominance. Native species composition was both environmentally and spatially structured, suggesting that some species are dispersal limited. Seed rain was spatially correlated with conspecific basal area for one of two native species, but not for Ligustrum. Conclusions: Native tree recruitment appears to be limited primarily by sapling mortality in patches dominated by the invasive Ligustrum. Ligustrum does not appear to be dispersal limited in our study area and is likely to continue spreading. Invaded patches may persist for hundreds of years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are numerous maps of the spontaneous vegetation of Argentina. However, a country-level map with enough detail to discriminate vegetation units within the phytogeographic provinces described by Cabrera (1976) is lacking. We analyzed vegetation descriptions published in recent decades, with special attention to those that produced physiognomic-floristic maps. As a result of this analysis, here we present a physiognomic-floristic map of spontaneous vegetation of Argentina that shows the heterogeneity within phytogeographic provinces. The map has 50 vegetation units as subdivisions of the phytogeographic ecotone and provinces early described, and a brief physiognomic-floristic description of each ecotone, province and vegetation unit. We propose a nomenclature of each vegetation unit based on dominant type of spontaneous vegetation and characteristic species and present digital cartographic material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims Ligustrum lucidum, native to China, is one of the dominant exotic and invasive tree species in secondary forests in Argentina. (1) We assessed its invasion during 20 yr in post-agricultural secondary forests dominated by native tree species, and (2) evaluated tree demographic rates of native individuals under and away from L. lucidum trees that invaded these forests. Locations Four 1-ha permanent plots of secondary forests, subtropical Andes of Tucumán, Argentina. Methods We quantified the invasion of L. lucidum individuals (≥10-cm diameter) from 1991 to 2011 within four 1-ha plots of secondary forests and analysed annual growth and mortality rates of native tree individuals (≥10-cm diameter) under and away from L. lucidum trees. For this, we compared tree demographic rates of all native individuals together (community level) under and away from individuals of L. lucidum, referred to as exotic and native neighbourhoods, respectively. Then, we described the relative growth rate of native tree species in exotic/ native neighbourhoods (species level) and related them to their demographic life histories and morpho-physiological traits. Results Both density and basal area of L. lucidum increased from 0.1% to 4% between 1991 and 2011. Native tree individuals grew 65% less in exotic neighborhoods compared to native neighborhoods. Relative growth rate showed negative values under L. lucidum individuals for the abundant species Ocotea porphyria, Parapitadenia excelsa, Juglans austalis and Allophylus edulis, indicating competition; while less abundant species Terminalia triflora, Cupania vernalis and Blepharocalix saliscifolius showed positive growth values under L. lucidum, suggesting a facilitation process. Thus, L. lucidum competes efficiently with some native tree species, particularly with those abundant species that dominate the canopy. Conclusions Ligustrum lucidum is invading post-agricultural secondary forests dominated by native tree species. While invading, L. lucidum competes with native abundant tree species that dominate the main structure of the forest canopy. As this invasive trend will likely increase in the near future, L. lucidum may alter forest structure, composition and dynamics, as well ecosystem functioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cool-season grasses establish symbioses with vertically transmitted Neotyphodium endophytes widespread in nature. The frequency of endophyte-infected plants in closed populations (i.e., without migrations) depends on both the differential fitness between infected and non-infected plants, and the endophyte-transmission efficiency. Most studies have been focused on the first mechanism ignoring the second. Infection frequency and endophyte transmission from vegetative tissues to seeds were surveyed in two grasses growing in vegetation units that differ in flood and grazing regimes, and soil salinity. Transmission efficiency and infection frequency for tall fescue did not vary significantly and were 0.98 and 1.00, respectively. For Italian ryegrass, transmission efficiency and infection frequency were 0.88 and 0.57 in humid prairies, and 0.96 and 0.96 in the other vegetation units. Only in humid mesophytic meadows, the observed pattern was irrespective of the presence or absence of grazers. Our results suggest that selection forces for endophyte infection are different for both species. Imperfect transmission was only compensated in tall fescue through an increased fitness of infected plants. Interpreting variations of infection frequency only in terms of differential fitness can be misleading, considering that endophyte transmission can be imperfect and variable in nature.
